The University of Idaho, Department of Metallurgical and Mining Engineering, through the Generic Mineral Technology Center, has been engaged in mine design research at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, Idaho. The purpose of the research is to develop and implement the longwall underhand cut-and-fill mining method for conditions at the Mine. The longwall underhand cut-and-fill mining method involves backfilling mined stopes with a compacted tailings-cement mix. After the backfill has been allowed to cure, mining is resumed from underneath. Horizontal stresses in the Lucky Friday Mine are exceptionally high and rock bursts are a common problem. Beus and Chan (1980) have reported a 2:1 horizontal to vertical stress ratio at the mine with a 65-MPa (9,500-psi) maximum horizontal stress at the 1,295-m (4,250-ft) level. Using this mining method under these stress conditions, it is desirable to have a backfill material that has sufficient strength to safely carry the high horizontal wall loads while minimizing external steel supports.

Evaluation and subsequent development of a quarry in east-central Missouri was based on a general but brief examination of outcrops and core from five (5) test holes. Neither core, outcrops, nor existing quarries in the general area gave any indication of potential major problems. In the third year of operation large areas of collapse rubble, consisting of green shale and large blocks of limestone and sandstone, were encountered. Their size and random distribution resulted in both blasting and quality control problems. By the fourth year of operation, production costs became prohibitive and the site was abandoned. Prior to dismantling the plant a geologic investigation, which included shallow seismic and resistivity surveys, was made of the unmined portion of the lease. The collapse dolines appear to be related to structure and predate development of the modern topography. Surface indications of these features are few. The seismic profiles were especially helpful in plotting their distribution. Geologic relationships and seismic data developed at this site are being related to similar suspect areas in Missouri and have been useful in their evaluation.

Detailed description of the development of the FIOR process1 and, subsequently, other technical papers relating to the operation and start up of the FIOR plant2,3 are available in the technical literature. The Fluidized Iron Ore Reduction (FIOR) process plant constructed in the Matanzas region of Venezuela represents the first commercial application of this technology. The FIOR process was developed by Exxon Company during the 1950's and 1960's; and the facility in Venezuela was designed and constructed by Davy McKee with the plant start up in 1976. While there is a minority government ownership in the company, FIOR de Venezuela operates as a private sector company with the majority of the ownership being private capital.

Mining coal under deep cover conditions is certainly the proper phrase to use in describing one of our newest operations. Located in the southwest corner of Virginia is this operation which is the Beatrice Mine of the Beatrice Pocahontas Company, a joint venture of Republic Steel Corporation and Island Creek Coal Company. The mine is working in the No. 3 Pocahontas seam in an assigned area of over 9500 acres containing over 60 million tons of recoverable, high quality, low volatile coal. The site of the mine opening was at Keen Mountain, Virginia, where the seam lay 1350 feet below the surface. This depth, greater than anything attempted thus far in the coal industry on this continent, would pose some problems, we felt, with which we had not previously had to contend.

The work of engineers responsible for the design and performance of mine facilities is often challenged by economic and practical constraints in the field. Problems have developed in implementing design criteria dictated by persons or agencies not familiar with the dynamic nature of mine engineering. Regional and site-specific conditions frequently require changes to standard designs, or the use of a completely innovative approach, which is not provided for in the regulations. The implementation of engineering design, therefore, usually requires a hard-sell approach to management and regulatory agencies that allows for a happy-medium to all parties concerned. Flexibility on the part of the regulatory agencies is needed to solve operational and environmental problems with sound engineering. Typical hydrologic issues which will be discussed fall in the following general categories: ? Design criteria for sizing water control structures (i.e., culverts, diversion and sedimentation ponds, ditches, etc.) ? Implementation (construction and operation) difficulties ? Regulatory compliance ? Reclamation planning with hydrologic considerations ? Protection of groundwater resources

Maryland, will be the widest vehicular tunnel ever built by the trench tube method. Careful coordination and planning were required to meet the tight and fast design and construction schedules. During the preliminary design, traditional design drawings were bypassed in favor of 25 preliminary design reports representing major work breakdown structures (tasks). For each task, alternative design solutions were examined and analyzed by means of trade-off studies on the basis of engineering, constructibility, and economic considerations, thus providing an overall conceptual value engineering approach for the entire project. So far, total value engineering proposed by the contractor for Contract I I (largest contract of the project at $245 million) is less than 1.5 percent of the contract value. This is an important indication of the success of the design phase planning.

"The construction of mechanized tunnels in soft ground has evolved significantly over the last 20 years, especially in the control of the face pressure and the closure of the soil-lining void to reduce the induced settlements. On the other hand, several mechanisms of the TBM excavation cycle are still not taken into account for routine design calculations, such as the increment of water pressures in front of the tunnel face, the flow of excavation fluids around the shield, the dynamic equilibrium between the grout pressures and the excavation convergence, among others. This paper discusses specifically the issue of face pressures and how several mechanisms, which are routinely not considered, can be easily verified and incorporated into the state-of-practice of design. INTRODUCTION The stability of underground excavations is traditionally assessed through analytical solutions based on the lower bound theorem of plasticity (Atkinson and Potts 1977; Mühlhaus 1985) or the limit equilibrium method (Anagnostou and Kovári 1994; Messerli et al. 2010). These methodologies depend on the tunnel geometry, certain ground parameters and the support pressure. When conventional construction methods are used, the internal support pressure is an abstract representation of the combined effects of partial excavation, ground reinforcement, and the different support elements. The use of closed-face tunnel boring machines (TBM) changed this perspective, as the magnitude of pressures acting on the excavation boundary could be controlled in a more direct way. In front of the TBM the ground is excavated as the cutterhead rotates and the cutting tools scrape the ground from the tunnel face while additives are injected to condition the material. Water, polymers, bentonite, and foam can be used as additives under different conditions (Thewes et al. 2012). The loosened ground with additives, herein referred to as the mixture, flows through the openings at the cutterhead and into the excavation chamber. This mixture is kept pressurized to support the face."

The somewhat misnomered "continuous" face section is in most mines today still far from perfect continuity. Achieving uninterrupted flow of coal from the mining machine to the outside has been a long sought for goal. Clearly, the largest problem to be solved in continuous mining today is one of increasing the cutting time of the miner. Full machine utilization can never be achieved with the new high capacity miners, as long as their performance is tied to that of the shuttle car. Figure No. I illustrates the point at which shuttle car haulage distance determines unit productivity rather than the productive capacity of the miner. Continuous mining is never realized. A recent development has proven, however, that truly continuous mining and haulage is possible. The Bell & Zoller Coal Company working with the Research and Development Department of Hewitt-Robins Inc. developed and perfected a new mining system which offers advantages in terms of increased productivity at reduced mining costs and enhances the safety of personnel at the face. This new system involves the use of two pieces of equipment that form a unbroken link, at all times, between the mining machine and the mine belt haulage system. These pieces are a Mobile Bridge Conveyor, and an extensible panel conveyor. The following areas of discussion will be covered during the review of this development. I. The Tolt Pipeline No. 2, West Snoqualmie Valley project, is part of a water supply project linking the Tolt reservoir in East King County to the City of Seattle through a nominal 2.13 m (7-ft) inside diameter conveyance. Receipt of the National, 2002Microtunnel Award provided recognition of the many challenges overcome by this project. Baseline conditions revealed in the Geotechnical Documentation included over-consolidated glacial deposits, landslide and alluvial deposits, artesian water, boulders up to 36-in in diameter, logs, heaving sands, and liquefiable soils beneath the river. Schedule constraints associated with setting the shafts in the floodplain of a salmon bearing river and the fickle performance of the river during those times it was not supposed to flood added to the challenge.

DESIGN BASIS Size of Project The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect with a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd with¬out major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Other projects are sized according to the tonnage of product rather than of mine ore; examples are iron ore mills that express size in terms of tons per year of pellets or high-grade concentrates, heavy minerals plants in tons per year of rutile or ilmenite, cement plants in barrels per year, potash in tons per year of muriate, phosphate in tons per year of washer rock and flotation concentrate, and others. However, tons per day milling rate is also the common denominator in most of those instances because the major equipment has to be selected on that criterion. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding, and processing. Hours per shift also are an impor¬tant factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into ac¬count. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure, but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as ten years, or as a specific daily capacity over the first two years, next four years, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco's Mission operation 15 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent,1 where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. Expected Life The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis2 which, in turn, is based on many factors. From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, environmental considerations, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-year project may be waste¬ful for a 5-year operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grind¬ing-the former may be found more economical for a 5-year operation, and the other, more costly method more economical for a 15- to 20-year life. Mining and Ore Transportation The mining method and the means of transportation of the ore to the first crushing stage have far-reaching effects upon mill design, particularly the crushing sections, and upon site selection (see Chapter 2, Situation of Mill). Consequently, mill design cannot advance until the mine planning has reached at least tentative decisions concerning these important matters, or reach the final stages until much is known about the ore that may be expected month by month and year by year for a reasonable period. Methods of ore transportation used in over 90 underground and open-pit mines are listed briefly in Section 32 (Table 1), and more detail is found later in this section and in Section 10, Storage and Transport. These methods include surface railroad, trucks, conveyors, surface skips, underground skips, and tramming from hoist or tunnel. In surface mining, transportation of the uncrushed ore by rail or truck to the primary crushing plant-conveniently located for lowest overall cost-is most common. Rail transportation provides low perton-mile costs. Truck transportation, though in some cases less eco¬nomical, is more flexible and more adaptable to mountainous terrain; furthermore, recent improvements have reduced the operating costs to keep trucks competitive on low-grade ores. The design of the primary crushing plant will be essentially the same whether delivery is by truck or rail, but the location of the plant is subject to more rigid restrictions in the latter case because of grade limitations, and these in turn may adversely affect the selec¬tion of the mill site as well. The influence of truck haulage in reducing the stripping ratio in open-pit mines is an added reason for predicting a minor role for rail transportation in the future. The use of conveyors to transport ore from the pit to the milling plant involves (in most cases) crushing the ore to a reasonable size (10 to 20 in. maximum with today's crushers) before conveying. The Twin Buttes system3 which went into operation in late 1969, utilizes primary crushers (two) and conveyors to receive rock waste, ore, and low-grade stockpile material from trucks, then transport them to the appropriate destination. Flexibility is dependent upon the porta¬bility of the primary crushers. In the face of this development, inclined skip hoists are no longer important to the mill designers. Underground mines generally pose fewer problems of design; these will be discussed in Chapter 2. Character of Deposit The degree of homogeneity of the ore in various parts of the mine is an important factor. The characteristics that concern the millman (approximately in order of importance) are: hardness, assay, metallurgical response, size distribution,4 and moisture content. Under metallurgical response may be included degree of oxidation, mineral¬ogy, clay content, and reagent consumption, as well as process re¬sponse in general. Short-term variations-hour-to-hour, day-to-day, or even week-to-week-make operation of the plant more difficult, require greater flexibility of process design and, perhaps, also require more instrumentation and manpower. Experiments have been carried out to determine the efficacy of bubble column flocculation. An acid-base neutralization method was used to determine the mixing time in a 0.064 m x l.5 m bubble column equipped with a Mott porous sparger. The mixing times decreased as the tracer injection point approached the gas sparger. Preliminary flocculation experiments on two clay samples were carried out. The effects of frother addition and air flow rate are presented and discussed.

Strategic design of groundwater monitoring programs can increase public confidence in mine management, decrease financial assurance requirements, and minimize environmental budgets. Monitoring of inorganics is challenging because many occur naturally with baseline concentrations fluctuating spatially or temporally. Evaluating monitoring data to distinguish between a hazardous release or a natural fluctuation in baseline concentration can be controversial. In order to develop an effective program, monitoring parameters should be selected which are mobile and stable. Statistical procedures should be customized to address the uniqueness of groundwater systems. Calculated baseline concentrations should minimize the false negative & false positive rate.

This paper is presented with particular reference to the findings of the OECD Advisory Conference on tunneling held last July in Washington D. C. A great deal has been said about the Conference in the past few months, but it may be appropriate to review briefly the background and objectives of the Conference to better understand how the mining community can relate its underground excavation problems to the results of the Conference. OBJECTIVES OF THE OECD CONFERENCE The world demand for tunneling (the term tunneling is used here loosely to include almost all forms of underground excavation) is expected to grow at an in- creasing rate. During the decade of the ?70's, the demand is expected to at least double by comparison with the previous decade. Much of this increase in demand will be due to the rapid growth of urbanization around the world. As urban populations grow larger and denser, the conservation of surface land and the quality of the environment become more important. This aspect of the increasing demand poses a difficult challenge to those who must plan and implement urban development.

Lithium bearing lepidolites from three deposits in the province of Goias in Brazil were investigated to determine whether there is a correlation between the lithium content of the mineral and the colour of lepidolite and associated tourmaline. Such a correlation can be a useful guide to field geologists for outlining high grade ore zones. It was found that mauve-pink lepidolite associated with pink tourmaline, and brownish lepidolite associated with black tourmaline have high lithium contents, but the colour of lepidolite is not due to lithium. The pink colour of lepidolite and tourmaline is likely to Mn3+, and the brownish tint of lepidolite and black colour of tourmaline to Fe3+. Lepido lites appear to be lithium-rich when the lepidolite and associated tourmaline contain relatively high amounts of Mn3+ and/or-Fe3+.

The need for an integrated approach to optimization of unit operations in both the pit and the mill has long been recognized, but the complexity and nature of the overall problem has up to now resisted solution. This paper reports on a modeling methodology which couples symbolic and numeric computing to unify operations in both the pit and mill. The ultimate goal of this work is to optimize all operations that are influenced by blasting. Blasting plays a key role in all facets of operations. Obviously, drilling and blasting costs are determined by blast design, but the down-stream costs that are closely related to blasting results are often treated as separate functions: loading, hauling, cleanup, and crushing and grinding are all heavily influenced. Diggablilty and bucket fill factor are a function of fragmentation, the condition of the floor and uniformity in the shape of the muck pile. Likewise, cycle times and loading delays partially determine haul cycles, while fragmentation distribution and size determines the efficiency of truck loading. Removal and breakage of oversize causes loading delays and increases cleanup costs. The influence of blasting doesn't stop at the crusher. Mill productivity, power consumption, and maintenance are a function of the feed. Even at the SAG mill a reduction of a critical particle size during blasting can increase throughput. Thus, a bottle-neck for production far removed from unit operations in the pit can be alleviated by a modification in blast design. The question is: how do we optimize blasting with respect not only to itself but to al\ related mining and milling operations? For that matter, how do we even model blasting so that we can control the results of a blast?

Cyclic voltammetry and surface potential (photovoltage) measurements have been carried out on galena electrodes in sodium tetraborate solutions with added HC1 and NaOH to adjust the pH over the range 2 to 13. The first technique shows that the surface species formed on moderate anodic polarization and reduced on subsequent cathodic polarization are the same over the entire pH range. At anodic potentials, a soluble metal species and excess sulfur are formed; at cathodic potentials, sulfur is reduced to a soluble species. More importantly, excess surface sulfur is formed spontaneously under zero current conditions in alkaline solutions. This has been shown to occur on both polished surfaces and on virgin surfaces produced by in situ cleavage under the electrolyte. The photovoltage gives some insight into the charge and potential distribution at the galena surface. This is found to depend on past electrochemical history and the n- or p-type semiconducting character of the electrode and is interpreted in terms of changes in the surface stoichiometry that occur during reduction or oxidation. The effect of surface stoichiometry on subsequent xanthate interactions is discussed.

Precious metal mineralization at Mt. Hamilton" Nevada is associated with a poly-metallic, garnet-pyroxene skarn system developed in middle to upper Cambrian calcareous shales, limestones and dolomites. The skarn is developed around the Cretaceous Seligman and Monte cristo calc-alkaline stocks. Gold is associated with intense retrograde alteration. Later epithermal quartz veins containing gold, silver, base-metal sulfides, and sulfosalts cross-cut skarn alteration. Westmont Mining Inc. is currently developing two mineralized zones containing a geologic resource of approximately 7.7 M.T., which averages 0.05 OPT gold and 0.5 OPT silver. The project will have an estimated mine life of seven years, with a planned annual production rate of 35,000 ounces of gold and 300,000 ounces of silver.

Within the natural resource industries, there is an increasing amount of data and number of variables being recorded when sampling a site. This has made multivariate geospatial datasets more difficult to analyze, in particular the definition of estimation or simulation domains used in geostatistical analysis. Establishing these domains is typically the first step for any subsequent geostatistical workflows or modeling. Domains are traditionally established using categorical data such as lithology, mineralization, or alteration from geological logging and are aimed at identifying distinct populations with particular geological, spatial, and statistical features. The manual logging process is time-consuming and costly but is required because defining geologically homogenous volumes is crucial for the planning, extraction, and processing of natural resources. Classical clustering methods have aided in analyzing the multivariate datasets, but the resulting clusters from these methods do not correlate well with geological logging and do not allow practitioners to input their knowledge of the domain in the clustering process. In this work, a simple unsupervised classification workflow is presented which allows the practitioner to input domain knowledge by selecting relevant variables to cluster reasonable geological domains. This can be used as a tool to aid the manual logging procedure or as a tool to establish domains for different uses such as defining zones with different rock hardness distributions which allows the corresponding volumes to be sent to appropriate mills for efficient mineral processing. The performance of the workflow is assessed on a mining dataset using the geochemical information and validated with the geological logging.

A brief history of the process is given, followed by a detailed discussion of the water granulation system and the methods used to transport and dewater the granulate. Environmental advantages of handling slag away from the blast furnace by water granulation are included.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed engineering and economic analyses on 130 domestic phosphate mines and deposits, all containing demonstrated resources, of which 73 are in the Southeastern states of Florida and North Carolina, to determine the domestic availability of phosphate rock. Of the total domestic resources studied (6.4 billion tons of recoverable rock) over 60 percent is found in these two Southeastern states. At an estimated cost of $30 per ton, in January 1981 dollars, approximately 1 billion tons of rock is potentially recoverable from Southeastern deposits, increasing to 3 billion tons at $45. In addition, there is nearly 6 billion tons of recoverable rock at the inferred level (some presently unmineable) in Florida and Georgia.
