Beginning in late 1985 and continuing through 1987, Bureau of Mines personnel investigated longwall chain pillar and entry design in two-and three-entry gate-road systems at a deep underground coal mine located in central Utah. To evaluate their respective stability characteristics, four chain pillars and two longwall panels within the two separate entry systems were instrumented with Bureau of Mines hydraulic borehole pressure cells to continuously monitor vertical and horizontal pillar and panel stresses through adjacent panel retreat. In addition, supplemental entry closure information was obtained from sites located in the vicinity of the instrumented pillars. The findings presented in this report demonstrate the practicality of evaluating mine pillar stability using in situ methods and support three significant conclusions regarding ground control aspects of the investigated two-entry system: (1) Total areal entry loading was considerably less for the two-entry system, as opposed to the three-entry system, (2) a smaller percentage of opened ground in the two-entry system contributed to a marked reduction in roof falls, and (3) lower areal loading in the two-entry system suggests improved ground conditions when mining the underlying seam.

Work done by Foster-Miller Associates under a Bureau of Mines research contract has developed methods to increase significantly the amount of fresh air that reaches the front of a continuous-mining machine. The emphasis was on removing methane build- ups that occur at the cutterhead. Using a full-scale plywood mockup of a coal mine working face area, the study showed that in many instances only about 20 pct of the fresh air heading towards an exhaust brattice or tubing actually gets to within 1 ft (0.3m) of the face. The key to providing more air at the face is to enhance and move forward the natural airflow pattern. This change in the natural airflow pattern can be accomplished by taking advantage of the air-moving abilities of the conventional water spray. It was discovered that if all the water sprays on the machine were realigned, then ventilation efficiencies of 70 pct or more were achieved regularly. This meant that if 9,000 cfm (4.2 m3/s) was entering the brattice, at least 6,300 cfm (3.0 m3/s) of this was reaching to within 1 ft (0.3m) of the face. This water spray realignment consists of placing a few nozzles on the side of the machine opposite the curtain and also tilting the front sprays slightly towards the curtain side. Recently, two underground tests and two additional independent laboratory tests of the water "Spray Fan" have been completed. In general, they have confirmed the performance of the Spray Fan system, but they also have provided useful information as to its difficulties and limitations.

A column reactor was applied for leaching with simultaneous flotation a complex sulfide ore in ferric sulfate-solution under oxygen pressure. Elemental sulfur and the flotable, nonreacted sulfides were collected in the froth and separated from the insoluble, nonflotable gangue minerals and solid particles formed during pressure leaching. The two-stage laboratory unit, built from Corning-glass elements is described. Results of the continuous leaching/flotation experiments conducted under 20-40 psig of oxygen pressure are presented, as are supplementary batch leaching experiments with iron precipitation under 150 psig oxygen pressure. High zinc extraction to solution and near total accumulation of lead sulfate in the nonflotable fraction are easily attainable. Relatively poor flotation of pyrite is probably caused by the partial oxidation of its sulfidic sulfur to sulfate.

Computor analysis has opened a new world of information for the mining of resources. This paper is directed at the mining of coal. The same procedures apply to most mining projects. The available facts when evaluated against the variables produce the answers. The project must be carefully analyzed, so that the facts can be organized in a data file. The file can be expanded as additional information is obtained during the entire life of the mine. If the mine is pre-planned, the file will be expanded in an orderly fashion and updated information will be available at all times. The development of a property goes through several phases; Exploration, Economic Analysis, Development, Production, and Reclamation. Each phase is an expansion of the data file. The validity of the answers is directly related to the accuracy and quantity of available data. The basis for a data file is horizontal position, and elevation of each piece of information. A coordinate system and datum are reference for a digital (X, Y and Z) position in a spatial system, a three dimensional digital model of the mine. The current practice is to use the State Plane Coordinate system and elevations as established by the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Each state has adopted this system by law. In the event there is litigation, it is an advantage to have the data on the legally recognized system. The control must be expanded so that all data can be assigned a digital position, and planned to fulfill the requirements for all phases of the mining operation. Public concern over possible degradation of groundwater resources has resulted in an array of Federal laws and corresponding state laws to regulate contaminates from solid and hazardous waste. A mine owner must be familiar with environmental regulations which could impact his operation and must know what precautions and corrective actions to take in order to protect his mining operation from potentially expensive remedial actions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has issued few regulations controlling the management of mining wastes. Federal regulation of mining came primarily under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) administered by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM). Waste generated from the extraction, benefication and processing of ores and minerals was exempt from regulation under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), which is EPA's major instrument in controlling surface contaminates. On December 31, 1985, EPA submitted to Congress a report entitled "Wastes from the Extraction and Benefication of Metallic Ores, Phosphate Rock, Asbestos, Overburden from Uranium Mining and Oil Shale", which will be referred to, henceforth, as the Congressional Report. This Congressional Report assessed the possible adverse effects of mine associated wastes. This report is the first step toward developing regulations with which EPA can regulate waste from the extraction, benefication and process of mineral ores.

Flotation circuits of a range of complexity are in use for a large number of ores. Since each ore is different and end-product quality requirements are not necessarily the same, circuit configurations of varying complexity are designed. How- ever, certain basic types of circuit configurations can be identified based upon the flotation behavior of the ores. These basic types can be combined to develop the specific f lowsheet configurations for a given ore. This chapter begins with a brief discussion of basic flowsheet configurations. Examples of the flowsheet configurations for a number of specific ores bearing different minerals are then described.

The emergence of residuals management as a planning and management tool in the mineral industry has been recently accelerated by the proliferation of environmental regulation and its associated costs. Residuals management practices allow for the early determination and integration of both production and environmental goals in the development of management strategies to arrive at the most cost effective, environ- mentally sound solution. The term residuals management was in actuality derived from the substitution of the word residual for the term ?pollutant? or ?waste?. A residual can be defined as a non-product output having no value in existing markets or a value less than the cost of marketing it. The values of the residual can be determined by time, technology, government policy, market conditions, etc. Residuals basically fit into two classes -- materials which are composed of liquid, gaseous or solids; and, energy, which mainly consists of heat and noise. These residuals are interrelated and can be modified by adding materials and/ or energy, which also may become a residual; thus, lending themselves to alternate disposal schemes to control the adverse effects.

Because of increased pressure from Federal & State Regulatory Agencies, most acid flows will require some sort of treatment prior to being discharged to receiving streams. In many industries, the volumes of liquors are large and their acid content varied. Pressure to minimize costs of waste treatment equipment and land usage makes development of a treatment process incorporating these desires mandatory. "Standard" methods of acid neutralization with lime have been known for years, however, the volume and characteristics of the resultant precipitated solids can create a disposal problem. Also, when standard lime treatment is used, the settling characteristic of the precipitated solids is normally slow. In some instances, the necessity of added dissolved solids removal, (such as iron, needing aeration) add to the problem of concentrating neutralized solids. In a paper published in the September 1970 issue of "Coal Age," *the results of extensive test work by personnel of the Homer Research Laboratories of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Bethlehem Pa., were reported. This paper dealt specifically with development of a flow sheet to treat acid mine drainage (hereafter referred to as AMD) from coal mine operations. The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine is currently one of the deepest block cave mines in the world. The rock mass is heavily veined with little to no joints and faults are usually healed cohesive structures leading to difficult cave mining conditions. The caving process is improved if the rock mass contains fractures with sufficient density that it will cave by gravity as undercutting progresses. Hydraulic fracturing (HF) has been used to create fractures around the cave to improve mining. A seismic monitoring system has been used in DMLZ since the start of mining. Therefore, the seismic activities before, during and after HF can be monitored. Shear wave splitting is a process used to study the impacts of HF on the rock mass. This process involves the measurement of travel times from splitting shear waves after seismic events and using this to define the anisotropy within the rock mass and subsequently fracture density. This paper sets out the methodology for carrying out the interpretation of the shear wave splitting process using seismic data from the fracked cave crown and abutments along with an overview of the benefits to cave mining as result.

INTRODUCTION Contemporary underground transit systems often require cross sections which are not adaptable to shield tunnelling. Due to the frequently large dimensions of these cross sections, which are normally situated at shallow depths and in soft ground, full face advance is not feasible because of ground control and construction requirements. Ground deformation and face stability are controlled by "staged excavation", which consists of sequentially driving smaller, specially arranged, individual headings hence avoiding full-face excavation. Shotcrete is normally used for initial support and these tunnels are frequently described as applications of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Figure 1 illustrates the relative size of large cross section tunnels with respect to conventional shield tunnels. Within the scope of this paper, 'large' cross sections are defined as those whose continuous (i.e., without intermediate pillar support) cross sectional excavated area exceeds 60m2. This definition includes most double track highway, railway and subway tunnels, subway stations and some single track railway tunnels. Excavation schemes which have been more frequently used for continuous cross sections (i.e., with no intermediate pillars) are presented in Figure 2. This classification is an extension of that presented previously by Eisenstein et al. (1986). The symbols used for classifying the excavation schemes are formed by the letter T (for "type"), followed by a number, which represents the number of excavation stages fully embraced by a shotcrete ring, termed "cells" by Lessmann (1986). When BHP Copper's Lower Kalamazoo Project commenced production in January 1997, two of the four original hoists had been converted to hoist ore from the Lower K level. Conversions on these hoists not only allowed hoisting from a much deeper level, but also created a higher hoisting efficiency and higher capacity as well. Conversions included new drums, new cables, SCR drives and other solid state control technologies not available when the original hoists were installed. Two of the original hoists were installed in the 1950's and the other two were installed in the 1970's.

This is the case history of how two nearby plants in Southwest Virginia solved their water clarification problems. While the solutions should not be considered applicable industry-wide, the methods used in arriving at the answers deserve consideration. When Clinchfield's Moss No. 2 Preparation Plant, the first ever built in Tiller Seam coal, was started in the fall of 1956, the clays in the raw coal soon posed a flocculation problem, Laboratory sedimentation tests were initiated; and as a result, lime was adopted as the flocculant for the clays, With lime, a pH of 11.2 was required. As the plant tonnage increased, it became evident that the amount of coal fines produced in the mining and preparation was greater than had been estimated and that the 90-foot thickener was inadequate in providing sufficient settling time to effect a clarified overflow for reuse. Testing showed that Separan 26105 (NP10)1/, when used with lime, was the most satisfactory coal flocculant available,

Industrial-mineral mining started early in the history of the State when salt was extensively mined for use in processing gold and silver ores, and borates were produced to meet most of the world's needs. After this start, industrial-mineral production grew slowly until World War II, mostly because of the remoteness of the State and the small population. Nevada now has a large and varied industrial-mineral industry. In 1983, 14 principal commodities were produced from 48 deposits; the total value of these materials was 168 million dollars. Nevada ranks first in domestic production of barite and magnesite; second in diatomite, gem stones, and lithium; third in fluorspar; and sixth in gypsum. Other materials produced are carbonate rocks, cement, clays, decorative and crushed stone, light- weight aggregate, perlite, pyritic soil additive, salt, sand and gravel, and silica. From 1978 through 1982 barite was the most important commodity; in 1983 diatomite surpassed barite in value of production. Most of the Nevada production consists of high-value commodities that are consumed out of the State. Approximately 430 significant deposits with 20 principal commodities are present in Nevada. This abundance can be attributed to the numerous and diverse geologic processes that have been operative. Seven major modes of origin have been identified: hydrothermal activity, sedimentation, combined hydrothermal activity-sedimentation, evaporative precipitation, brine formation, extrusion of igneous rocks, and alteration by ground water. The hydrothermal type accounted for 39 percent of the deposits, the combined hydrothermal-sedimentary type for 28 percent, and the sedimentary type for 13 percent. Nevada diatomite production is about 200,000 short tons/year valued at 30 million dollars. In 1984 three companies operated in Nevada producing diatomite from six open pits and processing it at four plants - one plant producing filter-grade materials and the others adsorbents and fillers. The diatomite occurs in about 60 areas, almost all in the western one-third of the State. The diatomites were deposited in long-lasting, fresh-water lakes in topographically closed valleys formed by basin-and-range faulting. About 85 percent of the barite mined in the United States is produced in Nevada. In 1981 the high point of production,-2.5 million short tons of bedded barite was produced from about 30 open-pit mines. About 120 significant bedded-barite deposits are known in Nevada; 38 of these have had past production of more than 25,000 short tons. The deposits are associated with marine siliceous rocks of Cambrian through Devonian age and occur in a zone about 300 miles long and 60 miles wide. Abundant evidence supports the theory that the bedded barite is of exhalative sedimentary origin.

"Point cloud technology is now an indispensable tool in geological and geotechnical data collection, interpretation and analysis. Open pit and underground mines of all sizes are regularly collecting point cloud data as Laser Scanning (LiDAR) and Photogrammetry surveying devices have finally become affordable and the workflows fast and efficient. Past challenges of large data processing and manipulation are gone with recent technological advancements in computer hardware and software. These innovations reduce file sizes, ease rendering requirements and allow for the implementation of real-time 3D viewers and surface meshing tools. With its ability to remotely (safely), rapidly and accurately extract large quantities of georeferenced and 3D-oriented data, point cloud technology provides numerous applications to the geomechanical field. The list of uses is continuously growing, so this paper specifically focuses on digital outcrop modeling and digital terrain engineering. INTRODUCTION Point Clouds The high-resolution and increasing availability of point cloud technology is rapidly improving open pit and underground mines’ investigation, interpretation and characterization of site geology and rock mass properties (Kemeny et al., 2015; Lyons-Baral, 2012). LiDAR and photogrammetry are common remote sensing methods employed to measure the coordinates of surfaces in three dimensions (3D), providing the X, Y and Z locations, and typically the reflective intensity and/or the visible three-band color of each point (Figure 1). LiDAR uses either a time-of-flight or phase-shift measurement of a laser beam reflected off targeted surfaces and received back into the device. Photogrammetry generates point clouds by merging multiple overlapping photographs and uses stereographic plotting to define the locations of object points in 3-D space. These methods can be deployed from airplanes, unpiloted aerial systems (UAS or drones), tripods, land vehicles, and even in a mobile backpack shown in Figure 2. RADAR, Total Station-Prism and other remote sensing systems also offer very precise “point clouds”, but this paper does not address these due to their higher cost and lower versatility and mobility. Technology In the past few years point cloud acquisition device prices have dropped significantly, devices have become lighter, smaller and easier to operate, and processing and utilizing the data has also become faster and easier. Device size improvements include mobile backpacks (Figure 2) and handheld mobile LiDAR (CISRO, 2014), allowing mobile scanning in tight spaces both above and below ground or inside and outside of man-made structures. Airborne data acquisition options have expanded dramatically with the spread of UAS technology as seen in Figure 3 (Hexagon Geosystems, 2015). Once UAS usage regulations are sorted out, these versatile machines will be everywhere, offering high resolution coordinate scans, imagery and other remote sensing. While backpacks and handhelds allow access to tight quarters, UAS permit rapid data capture from narrow to broad areas with multiple perspectives reducing data “shadows.”"

In galena flotation, lead ethyl xanthate, Pb(EtX)2, is precipitated and is physically adsorbed in the form of multilayers on the chemically adsorbed first layer of Pb(EtX). 1,2) The solid particles are coated with layers of Pb(EtX)2 in heterogeneous manner over surface areas possessing both anodic and cathodic character (3,4) It is anticipated that the mode of formation of Pb(EtX)2 and the number of ions present, together with stable or unstable by-product species, have great influence on the surface characteristics of galena. The information obtained from a study of these parameters may have important practical applications in flotation. Lead ethyl xanthate is sparingly soluble in water. The metal and xanthate ions released to the aqueous solution during its dissolution undergo various types of reactions depending upon the pH values of the system. Extensive work (5,6) has been carried out to elucidate the mechanism involved in acid decomposition of xanthate ions. Different decomposition paths (7,8) have been proposed for the hydrolytic decomposition of xanthate in neutral and alkaline solutions, The concentrations of lead ions vary due to a number of chemical reactions, regulated by the pH and the temperature of the bulk phase. The hydrophobic character of Pb(EtX)2 may change with the nature of chemical reactions. Some of the numerous by-product species in solution may adsorb on the solid and change the properties of surface film either favourably or adversely. The flotation performance of galena, therefore, may depend to a considerable extent on the physical and chemical stabil¬ity of Pb(EtX)2 layers. Since little work has been reported in literature dealing with the stability of Pb(EtX)2 and its correlation with the flotation of galena, attempts have been made In this study to evaluate the behaviour of freshly formed Pb(EtX)2 in aqueous systems at various pH values.

Geostatistical estimation techniques were customized to enable forecast of production figures at the Silver Bell uranium mine (Uravan District). Surface drill hole data were used to provide a block model of kriged estimators of average uranium grades. The recoverable figures, such as ore-waste ratio and ore grade, are then deduced from regressive curves previously obtained from underground information and production data. Cross-validations of the entire model were performed and were found positive.

Although many notable scientific investigations relating to roof control have been made, roof control still must be considered one of the more baffling problems confronting the miner. Each year contributions are made to our understanding and techniques in dealing with various single phases of the overall problem, however, an equation considering all the variables involved in roof control, if formulated, would indeed be hopelessly complex. Among the factors to be considered is first, gravity which is always acting but which is sometimes less of a problem than lateral forces. There are lateral forces due to expansion, resulting from the weight of overlying rock; to these must be added lateral stresses of orogenic or tectonic orgin, which may be enormous. Stresses due to plastic flow of beds, water pressure, gas pressure, expansion due to absorption of water, faults, joints, fractures, pot heads, and the like may complicate the solution. Therefore, we must base decisions on roof control, and roof bolting in particular, largely on experience, and far too often on few "knowns" and many "unknowns", The development of "in situ" roof trusses may prove of benefit because, they unlike roof bolting, promise positive calculable roof support. These trusses require installation of steel tensioned rods in the roof, which rods are arranged to produce a stress pattern similar to a bridge truss, the roof rock acting to transmit the compression forces. The simplest form of truss (see figure 1) consists merely of two steel rods anchored at the back of holes drilled at an angle of approximately 45° over the pillars, collared near the the middle of the room, the lower ends of the rods being connected together by tierods and turnbuckles. Used in this way, a 3/4" diameter rod can offer greater support than a 10" x 5-3/4" wide flange steel beam. By tightening the turnbuckle, uplist on the roof can be produced,, the downward reaction being transmitted to the pillars by the rods. This simplest form of truss has been used in rooms up to 24' in width. Trusses of four panels, that is, consisting of a truss within a truss, as shown in figure 2, have been used successfully in rooms 30' wide. (figs 2 & 3) It appears a 6 panel truss could be used in a 40, wide room.

The requirements for controlling air and stream pollution are a most timely subject for all concerned people. The coal industry has taken great measures to reduce both types of pollution. Through the use of more efficient scrubbing equipment on their thermal dryers, pollution has been considerably reduced. In many cases, the complete elimination of thermal drying by using centrifugal dryers to dewater fine coal products and meet customer specifications has completely eliminated air pollution from this source. To help eliminate stream pollution and the hazards created by tailing ponds, the coal industry is using centrifugal dewatering equipment. Use of centrifugals to dewater fine refuse for disposal would eliminate refuse ponds or extend their life. In doing this effectively and economically, preparation plants have the option of recycling the clarified water to close the water circuit or of discharging the water into receiving streams with the assurance that it contains an acceptable amount of refuse solids.
