Introduction A prime goal in the design and operation of uranium milling waste or tailing disposal systems is to mitigate adverse effects of tailing liquid on the adjacent groundwater. Adverse effects are often defined as modifying the groundwater quality in such a manner as to have detrimental health effects on downstream users. To accomplish this goal, the following three types of systems are employed with regard to the seepage and groundwater aspects of waste disposal: Type I Systems Seepage is allowed to occur unabated from the tailing disposal facility. Detrimental radionuclides and chemical elements are prevented from causing adverse downstream effects by natural purification actions in the subgrade geologic materials and the near zone groundwater. Monitoring is required to assure the predicted natural purification is occurring. The consequences of seepage loss is minimal since the m be predicted with current investigation and analytical techniques and can be evaluated as to effectiveness during operations. Type II Systems Seepage is partially retained in a waste impoundment or leakage from a designed retention system is anticipated. Natural purification is relied on for controlling migration of detrimental radionuclides or chemical elements, or contingency planning is employed to collect and return the tailing liquid to the impoundment. Installation efforts and concern for escape of tailing liquid are greater than for Type I systems, but extra precautions to preclude all seepage are not implemented. Monitoring is required to detect leakage and/or assure the natural purification of escaping tailing fluid. The consequence for accidential excusions are moderate, and will be excessive only if massive system failure occurs. Bong Mining Company/Liberia provides the rare opportunity to compare two generations of grate kiln pelletizing plants operating on the same magnetite/hematite ore basis. In this paper advantages and drawbacks are compared: mechanical aspects, energy-savings, pellet quality. Plant I with up- and down-draft drying gas flow. Plant II runs only on down draft drying and incorporates a heat-recoup system. Ferteco Mineracao/Brazil operates a Lurgi straight grate plant since 1977 on hematitic pelletfeed. Energy-political situation and char- coal as energy source in Brazil are reflected also in the search for alternative fuels for pelletizing. First measures and results are reported as well as intended further steps towards a 100 % oil replacement.

Newmont Mining Corp. has been producing gold from the Carlin Trend for more than 45 years. Naturally, the focus, scale and complexity of the operations have changed considerably during this time. Newmont discovered and developed the Carlin Main orebody that is located about 32 km (20 miles) north of Carlin, NV. The property was developed as a one-mine, one-gold mill treatment plant operation, which produced about 6.2 t/a (200,000 oz/year) of doré gold bars. The initial mine, mill and gold refining facilities were relatively small in comparison to today?s standards. The milling circuit used the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process to recover dissolved gold and prepare a concentrated precious metal ?precipitate? to be melted into a doré bar for sale.

The production and consumption of industrial minerals in the United States traditionally have played important roles in mining and in the supply of the bulk of basic raw materials to the economy. This diverse group of minerals extracted and consumed by a variety of industries accounts, on a weight and volume basis, for most mineral-based products consumed in our economy. Industrial minerals form the bulk of the basic raw-materials feedstock for most of the construction, agricultural, and inorganic-chemical-manufacturing sectors, and a good portion of the transportation, manufacturing, organic chemical, and service sectors of the U.S. economy. In this presentation, I discuss current estimates of the amount and value of industrial minerals mined compared with all mining in 1997. I then present a summary of 1997 production of industrial minerals by several end-use industries. This is followed by a historical perspective of the consumption of industrial minerals as a subset of all basic materials, with special emphasis on the aggregates industry. The presentation concludes with a look at the geographic distribution of industrial mineral operations in the United States and some thoughts about the future.

The crust of the earth, together with its seas and its atmosphere, is the source of all of mankind's primary wealth. Indeed, most people think of precious metals and stones when they think of wealth mined from the earth, but the value of the material and energy goods derived from the earth far exceed the value of the precious metals and gem stones. Thus, it is obvious that all minerals which we mine from the ground represent new wealth--the copper, clay, or petroleum we mine just as much as the gold or silver. More and more, wealth is defined in terms of utility-not in terms of an arbitrarily established monetary value. The recent action of the OPEC nations in controlling the flow of petroleum has clearly demonstrated this to the petroleum-importing nations! There is developing in the United States, as well as in many other nations of the world, a concern for the future availability of many mineral-derived raw materials and of mineral fuels. Ore grades are diminishing, concern for the environment has placed restraints on commercial development of some mineral deposits and the processing facilities necessary to exploit them, and countries upon which we have relied for major mineral materials have become increasingly nationalistic, causing uncertainties in future supply and causing an increasingly alarming deficit in our nation's balance in trade.

"Three major challenges for the mining industry are the minimization of energy use, water consumption and environmental impact. Therefore, any technique that reduces milling waste, decreases water usage and shrinks impact during mine life must be considered a major innovation in mining.To these ends, one of the most impactful developments in mining within the last 10 years has been the expanded use of high technology sensors to create preconcentrations of mine ore (Jönsson, 2014). The most common sensors used are charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras, that allow through a red, green and blue (RGB) coloring system, the separation of minerals with different colors, tones and, in many cases, with differences in brightness.More recently, the development and use of dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) to enable the separation by atomic density of the constituent minerals within a given rock has become a reality. Within this work, a rapid bibliographical review of the CCD and DE-XRT methods and examples of their usage within mining and the industrial minerals sector are presented.Sensor-based sorting in miningAutomation within mining is one of the industry’s current goals. Sensors of various kinds have been used as steps toward automation in recent years, from improving the safety and productivity of haul trucks through the use of cameras and global positioning satellites (GPS), to the divination of slope failures. Just as with other mining areas, sorting has improved dramatically and made great steps toward automation in recent years (Wotruba et al., 2014).Sensor-based sorting (SBS) uses spectromatic sensors to identify intrinsic characteristics of particles and separates them by either mechanical or pneumatic means into different product streams (Wotruba et al., 2014). SBS can be used with great effectiveness to improve gravimetric beneficiation through the selective separation or preconcentration of run of mine ores (ROM)."

The economics of transporting minerals by sea in less than full cargo lots encompasses an analysis of production costs, sale and inventory calculations and a careful comparison of ocean freight costs all of which when pieced together will usually definitively indicate which of the ocean freight alternatives is the correct one for the economic factors involved. To illustrate: Let us assume that a production to be marketed yields 60,000 metric tons of copper concentrates over a twelve month period. Shipment is geographically viable through Vancouver, B.C. The production has been sold to a Japanese Smelter and the mine produces at a rate of 5,000 metric tons of concentrates per month. The copper has been sold CIF FO. The Seller has carefully investigated ocean freight rates Vancouver, B.C./Hibi, Japan and finds that he could obtain a twelve month freight contract at $15.00 per metric ton FIGS based on a loading/discharging speed of 4000/ 2000 metric tons per WWDSHEX (weather working day, Sundays and Holidays excluded) this freight rate being predicated on shipping in lots of minimum. 15,000 tons. A further freight investigation reveals that to ship at the same terms and conditions but in lots of 5,000 tons, and shipping each month (in accordance with the mine's actual production) would cost $20.00 per metric ton FIOS. The calculation that is now made is whether it is more desireable to pay a higher ocean freight by shipping in 5,000 ton lots or to pay the lower freight where here the ocean freight involves a difference of some $300,000.00.

The influence of reduction roasting and thermal shock on the grindability of a refractory low-grade Michigan iron ore was examined in bench scale tests. The quantitative effects of the various treatments were evaluated at three sieve levels: 48, 100, and 400 mesh, using ball mill grindability and work index parameters as response indicators. Data from the testing program were analyzed statistically as a means of isolating the effects of cooling rate, roasting temperature, and ore chemical condition. All three variables were found to have an important influence on the grindability of the treated ore; ore chemical condition and roasting temperature had the most pronounced effects.

Development of a process for winning copper from pelletized chalcocite concentrate without matte smelting and converting is underway at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center, Bureau of Mines. The new route from concentrate to metal includes 2-stage fluid-bed treatment; pelletized concentrate (33 percent Cu, 7 percent S) is first desulfurized (to about 0.5 percent S) in an oxidizing atmosphere, and in the second stage the calcine is metallized by reduction with hydrogen. Thereafter, the reduced product plus 10 percent CaO is routed to a smelting furnace to separate metallic copper from the gangue. Recovery and the Cu content of the product at this point are in the 97-98 percent range. The metal must be refined to remove sulfur and iron to make wirebar copper. An important feature of the process is the pelletizing of the fine concentrate into mini-pellets prior to fluid-bed treatment, which has permitted shorter reaction time, decreased dusting, and facilitated subsequent processing.

Over the past 14 years, the efforts of 2 companies and several individuals have outlined a major solfataric gold ore body in the Summitville district in the southeast San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The hard work of these years could not have flowered without a dedication to modern exploration methods, an intense interest in new theories of ore genesis, and a relentless discontent with the accepted geology of the Summitville area. To set the stage for this discovery period, it must be noted that it began 100 years after gold was first found at Summitville. It was the height of the "porphyry copper" era and gold was still not a part of the explorationists' portfolio. It was also a time of great intellectual stimulation. Theories were rapidly developing to relate different types of ore deposition and to place ore genesis within the fabric of plate tectonics. Summitville itself had just been linked to the newly discovered Platoro caldera complex and the Platoro lineament. This in turn related Summitville to the other San Juan volcanic field caldera ore deposits.

Recent research conducted by NIOSH's Pittsburgh Re¬search Laboratory showed that electrical current levels permitted under present regulations may not limit cable temperatures to less than 90°C in reeled trailing cables. Reeled cables, which are tightly wrapped with many turns and which carry current in an enclosed space, can become overheated due to poor heat transfer. This overheating can cause the cable insulation to soften, making them prone to damage. The damaged insulation reduces the life of the cable and can lead to shock, electrocution and mine fires. This paper describes a method of measuring the conductor tem¬perature of mine trailing cables during normal operation. The temperature is measured using a 50/125-, µm graded index multimode optical fiber located in the center of the metallic conductors. Distributed temperature measurements are made using an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). This system is capable of measuring temperatures with an accuracy of ± I °C over a length of 4 km at I -mintervals. With this unique way of measuring temperature, tests can be conducted that simulate actual mine conditions. The key design parameters of roof bolting using expansion - shell type support for underground coal mine roof support are bolt length, bolt spacing, installed load and anchorage capacity. Depending on the utilization of suspension effect or friction effect, the bolt length is dictated either by the distance between the roof surface and the first overlying strong strata encountered or the desired magnitude of reduction in bending stress at the roof surface, The current prevailing practices about the bolt spacing and installed load are that an initial torque of 125 - 170 ft-lbs is applied and the bolts are spaced at 4- or 5- ft. square grid pattern. This seems to be a rather broad generalization in view of the great geological variances which are expected in underground coal mines. A modest evaluation program to measure the effectiveness of current roof bolting practices is to monitor the load history of roof bolts during a complete mining cycle including the phases of room development and pillar robbing. The load history, when compared with the anchorage capacity of roof bolts determined by in-situ pull tests, will provide information for evaluating the installed load, the bolt spacing as well as the specifications for structural and anchorage characteristics of the bolt assemblies. This paper presents a case history of monitoring the complete load histories of roof bolts in an underground coal mine of Pittsburgh seam.

The responses of calcite, feldspar, and quartz minerals In a laboratory free fall electrostatic separator, before and after tribocharging with stainless steel, PVC, and copper plates, have been investigated. The effect of H3BO3 and BaCl2 chemicals pre-treatment on the electrical properties of the minerals is examined. The changes in the electrical properties are discussed with the determined charge, dielectric constant, and electrical conductivity of the mineral samples. Electrical properties of the minerals and their responses to the electrical field during separation, after tribocharging and chemical pre-treatment, are explored for the need to characterize the electrical behaviour of the minerals.

Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource. However, its use is limited because of the nature and amount of associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, trace elements, and moisture. The moderate-to high- sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern as current and newer, potentially more stringent, regulations require reduction in sulfur oxide emissions. Release of particulates, NOx, and other pollutants during the coal-use cycle is also of concern. The current practice of controlling sulfur oxide emissions in the major steps of the coal- use cycle is limited mainly to coal preparation by physical beneficiation and, to a smaller extent, to post-utilization cleanup (flue gas desulfurization). Approximately two-thirds of the coal from states east of the Mississippi river is physically cleaned, whereas only 15% to 20% of the operating boilers in the utility industry are equipped with scrubbers to desulfurize the flue gas (Henzel, 1988). Physical beneficiation methods can be very effective in removing mineral matter, including pyritic sulfur, from coal. These processes take advantage of the differences in physical proper- ties between coal and mineral matter to achieve the separation. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about a 50-mm (2-inch) top size. It is then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine sizes. Crushing the coal liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including a portion of the sulfur that is not chemically bound to the coal. The per- centage of impurities freed from the coal matrix generally increases as the coal particle size decreases. The coarse- and intermediate-sized coals are typically subjected to a cleaning pro- cess based on differences in specific gravity between coal particles and the associated impurities. Such cleaning processes used include jigs, dense-medium baths, cyclone systems, and concentrating tables. The fine-sized (typically less than 0.5-mm) coal, if beneficiated, is typically cleaned using a froth flotation technique based on the differences in surface proper- ties between coal and its associated impurities. At fine sizes, greater cleaning potential exists because a greater portion of the impurities is released from the coal matrix. However, this potential is not fully realized owing to inefficiencies in separating fine particles using state- of-the-art flotation technology. Overall, current commercial coal preparation processes are estimated to remove up to 60% of the ash and 10% to 30% of the sulfur, depending on the coal characteristics, with product weight recoveries rang- ing from about 60% to 90% and thermal recoveries of about 85% to 98% (Versar, 1985; Science Applications International Corporation, 1987; Hoffman- Muntner Corporation, 1978). For many U.S. coals, grinding to sizes finer than those used in current coal preparation plants is required to liberate most of the physically bound impurities from the coal matrix. As noted, conventional coal-cleaning methods are not very effective at these fine sizes. Accordingly, the expanded use of domestic coal requires the development of advanced coal cleaning technologies that can provide economic performance while reducing environmental impacts. Program Goals and Objectives The overall goal of the U.S. Department of Energy (D0E)'s Coal Preparation Program is to provide the scientific and engineering knowledge base that industry can utilize to produce economically competitive and environmentally acceptable clean-coal products for introduction as market conditions warrant. The coal preparation process(es) should remove undesirable components from coal and improve its handling characteristics, thus making the product coal technically, as well as economically, viable as a competitor with petroleum-derived fuels and natural gas, and with alternative environmental control technologies. The coal preparation process must be applicable to a wide variety of bituminous and low-rank coals. The cleaning process should reduce the variability among clean-coal products from various raw coals, thus significantly increasing the range of potential end uses for each raw coal. The replacement of Boston’s elevated Highway I-93 running north to south through the heart of the city with 8-lane tunneled roadways, coupled with the underground extension of Highway I-90 eastward to Logan Airport, has earned the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project the position of the largest infrastructure project in the U.S. today. The gigantic interchange featuring numerous ramps where these two main branches of the Artery intersect required the construction of three huge jacked tunnel boxes that were pushed beneath eight active Amtrak and commuter rail tracks that had to remain undisturbed in spite of poor geology and a minimum of cover between the track beds and the tunnel crowns. Ground freezing was chosen as the method of stabilizing the soil over the tunnels, and it was extended in one area to stabilize the ground at the intersection between the tunnels and an abutting deep cut-and-cover excavation. Because many standard geotechnical instruments consist basically of open standpipes filled with water, it was a major challenge to keep them de-iced and in a condition to provide data on vertical and lateral ground movements. The technique of linear kriging as a grade estimation method of mining blocks is reason¬ably established in the mining industry. During the kriging process, negative kriging weights ([]i) are sometimes encountered. Due to negative kriging weights, negative block grades may be obtained in some extreme situations, which makes no practical sense. To guarantee nonnegative weights, an additional constraint is required in the kriging system of equations. Unfortunately, the nonnegative weight constraint results in a set of nonlinear system of equations. In this paper, a derivation of the resulting set of nonlinear equations is presented and a numerical algorithm is developed for the solution of the equations. Because the algorithm developed does not remove negative weights arbitrarily, optimal nonnegative weights are always guaranteed. Results obtained using the developed algorithm were compared with those using the standard linear kriging, in terms of computer, time and the estimation results. Both the computer time and the kriging variance were found to be higher with nonnegative constraint, as expected. However, some systematic pattern was observed in the kriged values (i.e., over-or underestimation) with or without the nonnegative constraint. The study also demonstrated when one should generally expect negative kriging weights in practice, and what practical impact the negative weights can have on the kriging estimates.

The combustion of fossil fuels in a fluidized bed of calcined limestone particles is a potentially efficient and economically attractive process for the generation of steam for electric power production and other uses. The process results in greatly reduced emissions of both sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide pollutants. Development work, evaluations and design studies are being carried out by various organizations under contract with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Dept. of Interior (Office of Coal Research). The AEC's Argonne National Laboratory is one of the principal participants in the development program under interagency agreements with EPA and OCR. This paper covers the principal reasons for developing fluidized-bed combustion, its advantages and disadvantages over conventional combustion methods, and some of the potential applications of the process. The participants in the multi-organizational program, the sponsoring agencies, the general status of development of the overall project, and the chief program areas that still require resolution are discussed. The main features of the program of work at Argonne National Laboratory and the results achieved so far are also included.

Even though wet processes were used in coal preparation plants prior to 1941, dewatering coal was not a problem then because the finer sizes were uneconomical to recover and were considered waste. However, during the war years the scarcity of raw materials necessitated the utilization of every pound of natural resources and coal plants began seeking an economical mans of recovering fine coal. Early efforts to this end concentrated primarily on centrifugal dewatering devices. Such equipment produced good results but was relatively expensive. In 1944, a method was devised utilizing a vibrating screen fitted with a profile wire deck rather than the standard woven wire cloth deck. This machine came to be referred to as a dewaterizer. Results obtained with the dewaterizer approached those of the centrifugal equipment, but at a lower capital cost, Their use reduced either the number of centrifugal units required to follow the dewaterizers or the required energy input to heat dryers, In some cases they eliminated the need for any further dewatering equipment.

Expanded markets for copper in the past few years and a consequent search for new ore bodies have revitalized the widely known but seldom applied method of producing copper called heap leaching. This term should be differentiated from dump leaching in that the latter is applied to dumps of mixed oxide and sulfide ores (although either may predominate) that have been too low grade to beneficiate and have, therefore, been stripped off the higher grade underlying sulfide ores. Heap leaching is defined here as the process applied to oxide ores which have been mined solely for the purpose of leaching. In this case, all costs of mining the ore become a part (and a substantial one, as will be shown) of the cost of the copper produced, whereas in dump leaching the mining cost has already been accounted for as a stripping cost for the sulfide ore. Of course, with newly opened ore bodies, stripping costs may be divided through accounting procedures, between the copper produced by the mill and that obtained by leaching, but in general this type of operation must be economic on the basis of the sulfide ore alone. Heap leaching, as a beneficiation method, is unique in that it is the only process used for the recovery of a metal in which the time involved from mining the ore to metal production is measured in months instead of hours or at the most, days, Then too, after the ore body has been depleted and mining has ceased, metal production will continue for some substantial period of time. Heap leaching is also unique because unlike any other method of beneficiation, metal recovery cannot be accurately forecast ahead of time and recovery will never approach that of a conventionally milled sulfide ore or even that of a vat leached oxide ore. Counter-balancing this drawback, however, is the relatively low capital expenditure necessary to put a heap leaching operation into production and the consequence that smaller ore bodies which would not support the higher capital cost involved in a vat leaching plant can be made into producers. Stated more simply, in heap leaching the operator accepts low recovery in exchange for low capital costs and the break even point, that is, where the operator should go to vat leaching with its higher recovery and higher capital costs, is a matter of economics and also, to a great extent, a matter for the nature of the ore to decide. For instance, an ore that will vat leach in 7 to 10 days using 7 pounds of sulfuric acid per pound of copper produced might use double or triple that amount of acid during the months that are required for heap leaching.
