Relatively large amounts of such hydrocarbons as fuel oils are often needed in flotation of low rank coals. The amount of oil can be decreased considerably by using surfactants as promotors. The reagents which are good candidates as surfactants to promote hydrophobicity can also act as emulsifying and wetting agents. Since the physical and chemical variables influence various sub-processes in different ways, their influence on the performance parameters is complex. The results of laboratory tests are presented to show that the dual role of reagents can be judiciously exploited to increase both the recovery and grade of clean coal. The mode and order of reagent addition is critical in enhancing their efficacy as flotation promotors. The results demonstrate the benefits of proper conditioning of the pulp prior to flotation.

In 1974- COGEMA (Compagnie Generale des Matieres Nucleaires) of France decided to exploit a uranium deposit discovered several years ago in a Permian formation of Southern France, near the town of Lodeve (Herault). The uranium occurs in black shales with high calcium carbonate content (7-10% CO2) and it was then necessary to use alkaline leaching. A fine grind (60-65% minue 270 mesh) was also necessary to obtain good' uranium recovery. A minimum of fresh water must be added to the alkaline system due to solution recycling. Filtration must be used because cake-washing requires less fresh water than countercurrent decantation.

This paper presents some techniques and data required to design large ball mills. The advent of larger size mills leads to consideration of the gearless drive as a practical solution to utilize large horsepowwers. The particular shell structure under consideration is subjected to thermal as well as magnetic loads. The magnitude of the inertia, magnetic and shell temperature characteristics have a very significant effect on the design and performance of the hydrodynamic pivoted shoe bearing. Particularly since these bearings have lower frictional resistance properties than hydrostatic trunnion tee rings. The structure of the mill is designed for long life. Parameters involved with the fatigue life of the structure are discussed together with some of the more important aspects of the design.

Three lithotypes of Phalen coal from Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia, Canada, were subjected to a modified Hardgrove grindability index (HGI) test. The testing scheme differed from conventional (ASTM D-409) Hardgrove testing by, in one case, repeating the test three times prior to removing the -200-mesh fine coal from the Hardgrove mill, and, in a second test, removing fines after each of three successive Hardgrove tests. Only the first stage of the latter testing scheme actually conforms to the standard HGI test. All processed samples were analyzed petrographically by a combined maceral/microlithotype analysis. The increase in the percentage of coal ground to -200 mesh increases through the 60- to 180-mesh fractions for each of the lithotypes for the following two apparent reasons. First, with progressive grinding, more of the oversize material is close to 200 mesh (75 µm), creating a "pool" of particles ready to be ground to -200 mesh, and, second, the removal of fines from the system at each step eases the grinding at the successive step. The fines retained system shows the influence of buffering of further grinding by the particles retained in the grinding mill. The Phalen lithotypes and the series of Central Appalachian coals, evaluated previously by Hower and Wild (1994), differ in that an increase in vitrite and a decrease in trimacerite is observed in successive -200-mesh fractions in two of the Phalen lithotypes. This is the opposite of the trend observed in the slightly lower-rank Central Appalachian coals.

Carbonaceous and metalliferous black shales occur in close proximity to Mercur-type gold deposits in the southern Oquirrh Mountains, Utah. These shale units, the Manning Canyon shale and the Long Trail shale, have undergone regional hydrothermal alteration. Hydrothermal solutions oxidized organic matter and pyrite, replaced shale by hydrothermal phyllosilicates and silica, and replaced fossils by phyllosilicates. The shales are depleted in organic carbon, calcium carbonate, alkali and alkaline earth metals, and enriched in aluminum and hydrogen. Hydrothermal veins containing illite, chlorite, pyrophyllite, kaolinite, Fe-oxides, and sulfides are present throughout the study area.The illite in veins is an ammonium illite that contains up to 2 % NH4 and is correspondingly depleted in K. Correlations among Au, As, Hg, TI, Sc, and rare earth elements indicate that hydrothermal fluids responsible for formation of ammonium illite were gold bearing. K/Ar ages of illite veins and illite-rich, clay-size separates of altered shales indicate hydrothermal activity occurred in the time range 193 to 122 Ma. Several ages from clay-size separates within the Mercur district cluster near 160 Ma. These ages are coeval with thrust faulting recognized to the north and west.

Past research showed that bituminous coal dust remains dry and dispersible in the presence of moisture. Rock dust must disperse with the coal dust to effectively inert a propagating coal dust explosion. Non-treated rock dust readily absorbs moisture, limiting its dispersibility, while anti-caking treated rock dusts can remain dry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health contracted the Central Mining Institute in Poland to conduct large-scale testing in their Experimental Mine Barbara to determine if a treated rock dust can be as effective as non-treated rock dust in attenuating or quenching coal dust explosions under the same experimental conditions. INTRODUCTION One of the goals of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to conduct research to reduce the risk of mine disasters and provide workplace solutions to reduce the risks associated with accumulations of combustible and explosible materials; the most common form of which is the generation of coal dust during the mining process and its subsequent distribution downwind. Dispersible rock dust is a primary defense for preventing coal dust explosion propagation in underground coal mines, and its properties are defined in 30 CFR 75.2. “Pulverized limestone, dolomite, gypsum, anhydrite, shale, adobe, or other inert material, preferably light colored, 100 percent of which will pass through a sieve having 20 meshes per linear inch and 70 percent or more of which will pass through a sieve having 200 meshes per linear inch; the particles of which when wetted and dried will not cohere to form a cake which will not be dispersed into separate particles by a light blast of air; and which does not contain more than 5 percent combustible matter or more than a total of 4 percent free and combined silica (SiO2), or, where the Secretary finds that such silica concentrations are not available, which does not contain more than 5 percent of free and combined silica.” An earlier NIOSH investigation of rock dust revealed two significant concerns with the supply of rock dust to U.S. coal mines: 1) insufficient particles <200 mesh (75 μm) and 2) all rock dusts when wetted and dried formed cakes and were not easily dispersed with a light blast of air (1). Past research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and others showed that bituminous coal dust remains dry and dispersible in the presence of moisture (2). Rock dust must also be dispersible in concert with the coal dust to effectively inert a propagating coal dust explosion (3, 4, 5, 6). Non-treated rock dust, however, readily absorbs moisture, limiting its dispersibility, while a rock dust treated with long-chain fatty acids (such as stearic acid) can remain dry and dispersible. Stearin-treated rock dust has been used in British coal mines (7) and is commonly used in Polish coal mines.

Nine western states contain significant barite deposits, but most deposits are in Nevada, which has been the principal western producer for more than three decades. Nevada produces about 85% of the total United States production, but about one-half of the barite consumed in the country is imported. Approximately 95% of the barite is used in drilling muds. Sharply decreased oil and gas drilling, starting in early 1982, severely depressed the domestic barite industry. Other problems for western barite include long distances to the areas of major drilling, high railroad-freight rates, and increased barite imports. Bedded deposits, formed by submarine exhalative processes, account for almost all western production, and reserves are large.

"INTRODUCTION Conventional steel bar reinforcement is used in many tunnel linings to provide high flexural and tensile load resistance. These Reinforced Concrete (RC) tunnel linings may suffer flexural cracking during service or, in the case of precast concrete segments, during production, handling, or installation. Cracks can lead to corrosion of steel reinforcement, so limits are placed on maximum acceptable crack widths to reduce the likelihood of corrosion during the intended design life (AFTES, 2013; MC2010, 2012). However, the relatively light level of reinforcement used in many applications can result in quite wide in-service crack widths, so either additional steel bar reinforcement is required to limit maximum crack widths, or fibers can be included to control crack widths. Numerous investigations have been undertaken into the efficacy of including steel fibers to reduce crack widths in conventionally reinforced members (Stang and Aarre, 1992; Abrishami and Mitchell, 1997; Bischoff, 2003; Dupont and Vandevalle, 2003; and Jansson et al, 2010), but steel fibers suffer the problem that they are at least as sensitive to corrosion at cracks as steel bars and therefore have similarly tight limits placed on acceptable crack widths (AFTES, 2013). An alternative means of maintaining narrow crack limits in RC members has therefore been sought. The current investigation was instigated following an observation that theories promoted as an explanation for the ability of steel fibers to reduce crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members (Deluce et al, 2014) do not depend on the material composition of the fibers used but instead depend primarily on the tensile stress generated by the fibers across cracks. Since it is known that macro-synthetic fibers are capable of equaling the post-crack tensile capacity of steel fibers, it has been hypothesized that macro-synthetic fibers are also capable of reducing crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members but with the added advantage that macro-synthetic fibers are completely immune to the effects of corrosion. Use of macro-synthetic fibers to reduce maximum crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members subject to aggressive environmental exposure is more rational than use of steel fibers because steel fibers are very sensitive to the corrosive effects of environmental exposure at cracks. The current investigation was therefore undertaken to explore the potential use of macro-synthetic fibers to reduce maximum crack widths in reinforced concrete members subject to flexure. Barchip BC54 fibers were selected as they are one of the most widely used and competitive high performance macro-synthetic fibers currently available."

These efforts are concentrated in four areas: optimization, computerization of traditional methods, heuristics, and simulations. These areas complement each other rather than compete. Characteristics of each are discussed toward enabling the engineer to evaluate specific systems that may be encountered. Alternative approaches within each classification are described as well as the motivation for each.

Allis-Chalmers has combined a new heat transfer device, called the ROLLER GRATE, with a unique processing scheme, resulting in the ROLLER GRATE Oil Shale Processing System of Allis-Chalmers. In order to test both the process and the equipment, a batch Process Development Unit (PDU) ROLLER GRATE retort was designed and built. This unit vas designed with the flexibility to process shale over a wide range of test conditions in order to demonstrate the attributes of the oil-shale processing system. Instrumentation on the PDU and extensive sampling of the effluent streams permitted the PDU test data to be used in the design and scale-up of the process. Over 30 tests have been conducted with Colorado shale, and over 25 tests have been run with an Indiana shale. In addition, rests have been run with California and Utah tar sands.

On August 3, 1987, a hearing was held by the House Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA). Four panels of environmental/citizen group representatives went before the Subcommittee to report on the state of affairs (from their perspective) of the coal industry and the Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) As expected, these groups had little positive news to report and continued to focus on glaring deficiencies within the surface mining program. They indicated that gross abuse of SMCRA has continued over the past ten years and the states have performed poorly. Congressman Udall&apos;s opening comments perhaps best characterized the mood of the group with his statement that "The Act has not accomplished what I or the people of the coalfields had hoped." and " ? a segment of the coal industry has continued in its bitter and implacable opposition to the most basic of environmental controls."

Understanding and managing risk is of increasing concern for the mining industry. Although methods exist to model geologic uncertainty based on stochastic modeling techniques and multiple realizations, there are few approaches to manage this geologic uncertainty in pit optimization. Block values can be penalized if the block uncertainty is high, but the goal here is to consider the reserve risk within the pit. This paper presents an approach for pit optimization that considers all realizations simultaneously with a heuristic pit optimizer. The heuristic algorithm maximizes value and also penalizes reserve risk. The inclusion of multiple realizations provides access to the risk or uncertainty in the total pit value. Considering this information permits an active risk management approach that can manage the uncertainty in the reserves within the entire pit.

Although calcium sulfate dihydrate, commonly referred to as gypsum, has been utilized for some time in fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) applications, it does not have the fire retardant filler recognition of ATH. Gypsum is more commonly known for application in cement, soil and water treatment, plaster, and wall-board. Inherent characteristics of gypsum limit its use to low temperature and, until recently, non-aqueous applications. However, as a plentiful, naturally occurring hydrated mineral, the cost effectiveness of calcium sulfate dihydrate has prompted development and yielded success in the areas of FRP spray-up and latex carpet backing.

INTRODUCTION The effectiveness of collector type on sulfide mineral flotation is generally determined by the amount and type of functional groups of collector molecules that interact with surface and water at the mineral/collector/water/gas interface. The final interfacial state when bubble contact takes place is preceded by chemical and physical reactions that involve these gas/liquid/solid interactions. These interactions differ not only for different minerals, solution and gas composition, but also for different collector molecules. The purpose of this paper is primarily to summarize the developments and status of short (C2-C6) and long (C12) chain, aliphatic collectors that contain three sulfur atoms in their polar function. These are trithiocarbonates (TT&apos;Cs). For purposes of comparison, similarities in molecules containing 0, N and S are compared. Mostly short chain ionic collectors molecules of dithiocarbonates (DTCs) and TT&apos;Cs were compared. The studies, largely bench scale flotation and plant testing, were carried out on ores containing Cu, Ni, Au, and PGM&apos;s. Studies of long chain &apos;ITC collectors are reported on Ni, PGM and auriferous pyrite ores containing uranium. Under starvation dosage conditions, surface activity coefficients of short chain collector molecules and interacting water were calculated. INTRODUCTION Sublevel mining is a mass mining method based upon the utilization of gravity flow of the blasted ore and the caved overlying waste rock mass. As with any other mining method, sublevel caving has advantages and dis¬advantages which must be carefully considered and evaluated. The major advantages of sublevel caving are dis¬cussed as follows: Because all of the mining activities are executed in or from relatively small openings, sublevel caving is one of the safest mining methods. Drifts, which are the pri¬mary working places, are distributed in a uniform pat¬tern on all levels. Normally the maximum dimensions of the sublevel drifts are about 5 m wide and 3.7 m high. The transportation drifts can have the same section, or the height may be increased to about 4.5 m when trucks are loaded in the transport drifts. The stability and safety of such drifts in competent rock can be easily controlled by smooth blasting or by a combination of smooth blasting with shotcreting. In less competent rock masses, stability can be achieved by combined reinforc¬ing, for example, by a combination of smooth blasting, shotcreting, and rockbolting. The major mining activities can be broken down into three groups: drifting and reinforcing; ore fragmenta¬tion, i.e., production drilling and blasting; and ore draw¬ing, loading, and transportation, and all are relatively simple. Because of the repetitive nature of the mining system, one can standardize almost completely all min¬ing activities. This means that a high degree of work efficiency can be achieved. Because the components of mining production in sublevel caving can be standardized, a high degree of mechanization is possible. In modern sublevel caving the sections of drifts and tunnels are sufficiently large to allow the introduction of large trackless mining equip¬ment. The advantages of a trackless system can be then broadly utilized not only for direct mining but also for all services, including the transportation of mining per¬sonnel to the working place. The flexibility of mining is very good. Standardiza¬tion and specialization of mining activities and equip¬ment on separate levels (lower level or levels in de¬velopment, upper level or levels in production mining) together with the trackless system yield a high degree of flexibility. This allows a rapid start-up of mining and good flexibility in making production rate changes. The method lends itself to good work concentration, organization, and working conditions. Normally, on the lower levels, various phases of development are under¬way. Upper levels are in various stages of extraction. Therefore the work can be easily organized into a sys¬tem which excludes interference between mining activi¬ties. Safety of mining (in small dimension openings), good work organization, high mechanization using large modern mining equipment, etc., comprise very good working conditions. Naturally such a system enables a high work concentration and rationalization of separate specialized mining activities and therefore mining by sublevel caving can be effective and relatively in¬expensive. The major disadvantages of sublevel caving, on the other hand, are: There is a relatively high dilution of the ore by caved waste. Various types of ore loss can occur. When the ex¬traction limit (that point yielding the maximum accept¬able amount of dilution) is reached, the remaining highly diluted ore represents an ore loss. Some ore is lost in passive zones located on the level of extraction between the active zones of the gravity flow. Part of the ore from these passive zones can be recovered together with ore extraction on the lower sublevel, but some un¬diluted and often not fragmented ore located in passive zones above the plane of the footwall is lost. In gen¬eral, these losses are larger as the inclination of the ore body and the footwall is reduced. A relatively large amount of development is re¬quired. This includes transport drifts, usually located in the footwall waste rock on each sublevel, and sub¬level drifts, which connect the active mining areas to the transport drifts and as a result are partially in ore and partially in the waste rock of the footwall. The waste rock length increases as the inclination of the ore body and footwall decreases. It also includes orepasses, used for transport of the ore or waste from the separate sublevels downward to the main haulage level, and normally driven in waste; and inclined drifts or tunnels, which provide a connection for the trackless equipment between the main haulage level and the separate sublevels and are driven in waste. Finally there is the de¬struction of the surface through subsidence. To maximize the ore recovery, minimize the dilu¬tion, and achieve a high efficiency of mining by sub¬level caving, good data regarding the gravity flow pa¬rameters for the blasted ore and the caved waste are of utmost importance. The exact type and amount of data required depend upon the purpose and needs of the study. For the first feasibility study, it may be sufficient to utilize the data from other sublevel caving operations with similar conditions and circumstances. For any higher level of mine planning it is clear that more exact data, including analytical and experimental analyses up to full-scale in-situ testing, are necessary. Basic gravity flow principles and design guidelines for the application of the sublevel caving mining method are presented in the following sections. Although some¬what simplified, they should provide a basis for mine planning and operation. The gravity flow principles described can be effectively applied to other mining situations, with some modification. Also, steep dipping coal seams can be effectively mined by modified sub¬level caving.

Experience at Energy West Mines in the Wasatch Plateau Coal Field, Utah, has shown that longwall face bursts occur mostly near the tailgate when extracting the third adjacent longwall in a panel section where depths exceed 610 m (2000 ft). It is believed that this is due to a combination of cover depth and side abutment stresses created by the widening of a pressure arch formed by interlocking and bridging of large blocks of" very competent strata. The 60-m-thick (200 ft) Castlegate Sandstone probably plays a key role in pressure arching. This paper presents a back-analysis of the location and magnitude of the stresses associated with face bursts that occurred when mining the 7th Right Longwall at the Deer Creek Mine. Improvement of these conditions may be achieved by widening the longwalls to attain critical subsidence width sooner while mining the second long-wall, and to reduce stresses at the face. Wider longwall faces, however, increase the chance of sandstone channel interception often associated with bursts. Satisfactory mitigation of face bursts beyond cover depths of 610 to 670 m (2000 to 2200 ft) may be difficult without using destressing techniques. The hydraulic fracturing/liquid infusion technique seems to offer the best possibilities for application in longwall mining.

The results of an experimental and theoretical research study into the spatial and temporal behavior of dust in mine airways is summarized. Experiments were performed in mine airways under both controlled and normal operating conditions. The controlled experiments included the documentation of the concentration and deposition patterns for two types of dust under three different velocities. Real-time dust concentration data were obtained using real-time aero- sol monitors (RAM-I) to determine the dispersion coefficient in a mine airway. On the theoretical font, a convection diffusion model of the dust flow phenomenon in mine airways was developed considering dominant mechanisms affecting dust transport and deposition in mine airways. Mechanisms modeled include turbulent and gravitational deposition, coagulation, and dispersion. In this paper, comparative analyses of results (8 the controlled experiments with the predictions of the mathematical model are presented. In addition to the overall validity, the adequacy of the individual components of the model, such as deposition in the total and respirable range, and dispersion are examined in light of the experimental observations. The experimental data from controlled experiments compared more favorably with model predicted results for similar conditions as opposed to the comparative analysis results for in-mine experiments. Specifically, the model predictions for an 800-m stretch of a mine airway reveal some significant differences from the behavior noticed in the mine. The deposition was lower than that predicted by the model. Consequently, concentrations were higher than those predicted by the model. The implications of these and other findings for further investigations are discussed in the paper.

The Mission Valley Light Rail will loop through San Diego State University (SDSU)and to minimize the impact of construction most of the works will be underground. The project will require construction of a 330-m long (1080-ft), 11.24-m wide (36.9-ft),single twin track tunnel through Stadium Conglomerate, a poorly cemented dense sandy gravel with cobbles. Key technical issues are discussed including the ground conditions and predicted ground response, the use of sequential excavation methods to control deformations and specific construction concerns such as instrumentation and monitoring. Management of the construction process to minimize risk is particularly important in this environment and the strategy selected to control the works is also considered.

Existing reports on the effects of mine subsidence on water wells and springs appear to be inconsistent. Some report quick and complete recoveries to pre-mining conditions while others indicate long-term or permanent effects. It is clear that topographic and geological factors as well as precise position with regard to the mine are important in determining probable effects of subsidence on aquifers. Ridgetop aquifers which are well above regional base-level are much more susceptible to disturbance by mining activities than those located topographically lower. Effects seen are attributed largely to increased permeability, both horizontal and vertical. of the aquifer rocks. The deeper aquifers usually show short term losses or water-table declines. but the effects on the ridge-top aquifers persist for longer periods or may be permanent. Subsidence enhances permeability. so that infiltrating water moves much faster to lower levels. causing pond and stream losses and declining levels in wells as well as declining flows of springs of the higher aquifers, while increasing levels and flows of the lower aquifers. Additional effects are shifts of spring locations caused by minor tilts due to differential subsidence and redirection of shallow flows by changes of horizontal fracture permeability. These effects are seen as mining of a panel progresses beneath the site. and are often repeated when adjacent panel mining fronts pass the site. Analysis of water well level and spring flow records indicates that the effects are greatest at the edges of longwall panels in the tensional regime. These effects are amplified for locations close to topographically steep terrain and in close proximity to fracture traces mapped from medium-to small-scale aerial images.
