In the fall of 1976 the author started test work with Friction Rock Stabilizers in uranium mines of the West, principally in the Ambrosia Lake and Churchrock districts of New Mexico. Tests were also conducted in other uranium mines in the Rocky Mountains area. These mines are plagues with problems in ground control due to the weak formations in which mineralization occurs, mudstones, siltstones, weak sand, etc. For this reason, it is extremely difficult to obtain good anchorage for long periods of time with conventional mechanical roof bolts. Resin bolts give good anchorage but are expensive and, because of hole erosion and difficulties in installation due to inadequate equipment for mixing the resin and placing the rebar, they are not widely used. Field testing was also carried out in trona, limestones and hard and soft shale formations. The mechanism of the Friction Rock Stabi1izer support is discussed and pull test data presented for various rock types.

INTRODUCTION Previous papers and discussions at this conference have already covered the subjects of identification and nature of risks, allocation of risks and contractual arrangements. In this portion of the conference, in the light of topics already covered, we will consider how to minimize risks and how to mitigate losses. Webster defines mitigate as "to make less severe or painful", an apt definition for our purpose! RISK MANAGEMENT POLICY The first thing that must be said about risks, especially in construction, is that they exist and that they don't necessarily fall alike on the just and the unjust. Some risks, i.e., some kinds of risks, must be recognized as inevitable in engineering and construction and therefore must philosophically and realistically be accepted as part of situations to be dealt with. Dealing with means minimizing, covering, and sharing of risks and doesn't mean merely passing off the risks to someone else. While some risks can be avoided, for example, whether the structure will fall down or the excavation will cave in, risks management primarily deals with: A. minimizing risks---whomever risk it may be B. equitable sharing of those risks among the participants.

Production of highly-cleaned coal for advanced utilization schemes requires close control of the coal ash content at very low levels. For this purpose, a sensitive, low-cost, robust on-stream ash analyzer is needed. The development of such an instrument based on x-ray backscatter and fluorescence is described, including features to improve its sensitivity at low ash levels. The performance of the resulting device in testing a real coal sample is discussed.

In just over a generation, the United States bentonite industry has grown from almost a rake and shovel operation into one with a multimillion ton annual production rate and exports to all corners of the globe. Bentonite production, pressed to keep pace with the soaring demand, has increased more than 10 fold in the last 30 years. The worldwide demand for bentonite is expected to double during the next eight to ten years. It remains to be seen whether U.S. producers will be able to maintain the dominant position in the world market. It should be noted that accurate statistical information regarding production or market information is difficult or impossible to obtain abroad and also within the United States. Published information obtained in response to questionnaires of the Bureau of Mines tends to be on the conservative side. FOUNDRY It has only been in the last thirty or forty years that bentonite has become an indispensible part of the age old metal casting industry. The relationship has proven most beneficial to both industries and promises to be long lasting. Lamproite occurs in two locations in southeastern Kansas that are in close proximity to each other. In both locations, the lamproite is restricted to north- east-elongated, ellipsoidal depressions measuring about 3 mi by 1.5 mi. At the surface and in the shallow subsurface, lamproite occurs as sills that were intruded into Middle and Upper Pennsylvanian rocks consisting of shale, limestone, and minor sandstone. Isotopic age determinations by Zartman and others (1967) indicate that the lamproite was intruded during the Late Cretaceous (88-91 my). Drillholes for hydrocarbon exploration down to a depth of about 1,400 ft (top of the Mississippian) and numerous shallow drillholes (mostly 200-300 ft) by the Kansas Geological Survey in the northern portion of Silver City dome helped to understand the structural complexity and extent of the near-surface sills. Numerous radial faults showing small apparent vertical offsets limit the lateral continuation of individual sills. Concentric faults are believed to mark the edge of the depression. Wagner (1954) mapped the geology of Silver City dome in considerable detail and recognized a northward dipping, 120-ft-thick, lamproite sill exposed at the surface along the northeastern edge of the dome. The upper 40-50 ft of the sill weathers olive-brown and has a soft, clayey consistency in which only the phlogopite mica is recognizable. The weathered material has been mined by Micro-Lite LLC since 1982 from the exposed sill in an open-pit that measures about half a mile extending in an east- west direction. The bulk of the material, about 98%, is used as an additive in mineral supplements for cattle feed.

Originated and developed in the civil tunneling industry, the Ground Reaction Curve (GRC) has provided a robust methodology for evaluating and designing ground support in both tunnels and underground mining scenarios. This paper presents a preliminary assessment in the utilization of the GRC concept for the evaluation and design of the pillar-support system with respect to overburden stress and displacement. This initial assessment will be based on and backed by past research on this topic. Underground mine instrumentation is planned for a longwall mine in the Appalachian coal field based on the research and findings in this paper to support the postulated hypothesis. INTRODUCTION Since the early 1970’s, the mining industry has evaluated the structural stability of a pillar by dividing an approximated pillar load by an approximated pillar strength. While this design methodology has served the industry well in the past, as modern mining operations continue to develop in more complex geological and geometric conditions coupled with market economics, industry professionals are in dire need of a modified stability assessment approach which considers both the stress condition and material displacements. Within the civil tunneling industry, the GRC approach has been successfully utilized in designing underground support measures that enhance the stability of an underground excavation. Through the incorporation of current industry knowledge and understanding of ground and support behaviors this paper looks to investigate into preliminary assessment for the development of a Modified Support Response Method (MSRM) to further improve the analysis of local and global underground stability. CURRENT PILLAR DESIGN METHODS AND THEIR LIMITATIONS Globally, multiple pillar design methods have been utilized in the design of underground excavations. Each of these methods approaches the calculation of pillar stability a little differently with respect to material properties, underground geometries and stress conditions. Analytical solutions can be used to determine the strength of homogeneous materials like concrete, but not in case of non-homogeneous and non-isotropic mineral deposits in a mine. These equations are often derived using empirical methods. Pillar strength is defined as the maximum resistance of a pillar to axial loading (Brady & Brown, 1985). The strength of mine pillars is typically estimated through indirect methods. In the past, researchers have correlated the strength of a given size and width of a rock specimen to the strength of a mine pillar. The first study on the effect of geometry on rock strength was done by (Bauschiger, 1876) on Swiss sandstone samples. Since then several empirical equations to determine pillar strength had been published by many researchers like (Bunting, 1911), (Griffith & Conner, 1912), (Greenwald, Howarth, & Hartmann, 1939), (Holland & Gaddy, 1957), (Evana, Pomeroy, & Berenbaum, 1961) and (Holland C. , 1964).

The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility Far Site in Lead, South Dakota is currently under construction and involves drill and blast excavation of the largest and deepest caverns in North America. This paper will review how the geotechnical risks are being managed through careful consideration of excavation sequence, completion of exploratory pilot tunnels, implementation of a robust instrumentation and monitoring program, and validation against the design. Aside from having a cross section of 5,900 square feet and being situated at a depth of one mile, the caverns also employ a unique permanent rock bolt solution which underwent a significant pre-production pull testing program involving varying installation methods and being subject to blast vibrations. The behavior of the schistose rock mass and performance of the ground support are being continually monitored throughout the construction phase.

This paper considers simulation of truck dispatching system designs using maximum expected production of the truck-shovel system as the measure of performance. Two methods are utilized, multiple comparisons with the best (MCB) and the combination of MCB and the variance reduction technique known as common random numbers (CRN). These two techniques are compared via simulation experiments. The results show that the combined procedure of MCB with CRN is the superior tool to reduce the total number of replications needed to ensure the specified probability of correct selection over the finite number of designing systems. In this case study, MCB with CRN reduces the variance by 29% and the number of required replications by 48%. Also, the MCB with CRN procedure narrowed the confidence interval by 18%.

Because of the nature of the breakage in the Barmac vertical spindle impactor, the 80% reduction ratio is very small, so that when an energy efficiency is calculated from Bond's method, it appears to be very low. However, the product size distribution contains a high proportion of fines. It is argued that the production of these fines accounts for the high energy consumption, and Bond's method is modified to account for this, by considering the crusher to be, effectively, a number of smaller crushers in parallel, each having a different reduction ratio.

The intensive use of computers for mineral application at Serrana's phosphate mine in Jacupiranga, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, began in the late seventies. The early hardware and software available are described in sufficient detail to allow comparisons between that solution and the new one, based on a personal computer and a new software package - PC MINE SYSTEM from GEMCOM SERVICES INC - that provides full color graphics capabilities plus mine design and planning tools. The process needed for adaptation to the new technology' and its impact on SERRANA S.A. DE MINERACAO are described. Finally, future enhancements to the System and mine control and planning are focused.

In 2018, the German Federal government decided to phase-out the energy production using coal-fired power plants and to terminate lignite mining completely by 2038 at the latest. This decision will impact approximately 60,000 jobs. It will have an enormous impact on the socioeconomic development especially in all German lignite mining regions. To avoid economic and political friction, it is of utmost importance to achieve a sustainable transition towards a post-mining era and to offer residents in the mining districts perspectives for a good future that include adequate job opportunities. In this context, the German government is providing massive structural aids early on. As previous closure experiences from the German hard coal mining industry have shown, it takes at least a generation to overcome the effects of a strategic closing decision of this magnitude. Therefore, the planned closure process appears to be a long time at first glance. In fact, however, it is not.

This paper reports on a newly developed system for teleoperation and autonomous tramming of LHD (Load-Haul-Dump) mining vehicles that not only increases the safety of the operators, but also has the potential to increase productivity.

"INTRODUCTION Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.5 million tons of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this paper and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW Peña Colorada is a mining company which produces about 30% of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in the location map below:TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS Most mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore”. Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that unlocked significant project value in many aspects of the mine plan. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. The processing of EAF baghouse dusts from both the specialty steel industry and low alloy producers will be reviewed. In addition, the INMETCO process has been modified so as to recover nickel, chromium and iron from many other waste materials such as pickling solutions or filter cakes, spent nickel and chromium plating baths, carbon refractories from pickling tanks, and super alloy wastes including baghouse bags. INMETCO is the only North American company presently capable of recycling nickel-cadmium batteries by high temperature metals recovery. This, along with the details of INMETCO's BDAT Test Program and results performed to pre-agreed standards with the EPA will be discussed.

Gypsum resources are significant in the midwestern United States, with specific deposits varying in "place value" relative to the major markets served. Underground and surface mining operations produce gypsum from sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Silurian through. Jurassic. Although reserves tend to be limited at individual operating properties, potential resources are vast and future development will hinge principally on market growth and changing economic conditions. Most critical of the variables affecting the industry in both the short and long term will be the availability, type and cost of energy and both processing and distribution.

Ore Reserve Models are well established evaluation and mine planning tools. BY definition, these models are made up of regularly sized blocks, arranged in a three dimensional matrix. Two dimensions correspond to north and east directions, and the third, to the depth or elevation. The dimensions of the blocks need not be equal, but generally at least two of the dimensions are equal. The blocks are located in space by coordinates which are generally translated into index values for computer applications. Each block will have quantitative attributes, such as grades, densities, rock characteristics, etc. assigned to it. The process of assigning values to each block in the three dimensional matrix is the process of ore reserve model development. One of several interpolation procedures may be employed to predict the value of a block, based on surrounding data. Block value models have several uses. The utilization of block models in ore reserve computations is quite common. Here, ore reserves may be calculated by level or by cross-section for the entire deposit. For each ore reserve calculation, multiple cut-off grades may be analyzed to determine the ore reserves under different cut-off conditions. The other major use of block value models is in mine simulation. Through simulation, profitable studies that analyze the effect of alternate ore removal sequences can be undertaken to determine economic optimality. Other studies that are undertaken in mine simulation problems include the evaluation of mine layout, pit slope effects, and the impact of varying cut-off grades.

As noted by D.W. Fuerstenau in his Plenary Lecture at the Conference on Extractive Metallurgy of Gold and Base Metals, Kalgoorlie, Australia, "Com¬minution of solids is surely one of the oldest technologies that, even in this day and age of DNAs, chips and space exploration, continues to challenge our scientific acumen and engineering ingenuity." Thus, the fundamentals of comminution continue to receive a great deal of attention in the literature. This was particularly true in 1992 with the publication of the proceedings from the SME-sponsored symposium, Comminution Theory and Practice. Papers covering topics ranging from liberation to comminution fundamentals to novel size reduction techniques are included in this review. Liberation Liberation continued to be a prime area of research interest, not only in terms of liberation modeling, but also in understanding the basic mechanisms involved in mineral liberation. King (Comminution - Theory and Practice, pp. 3-15) described a method for determining the interphase area between mineral grains. He showed how the mea¬surement of interphase area before and after comminution could be used to determine the presence or absence of intergranular fracture. Lin, Miller and Cortes (Kona, Vol. 7) discussed the use of computed tomography (CT) as a nondestructive means of investigating three-dimensional particle composition. The use of this technique in constructing coal washability curves from CT data was presented.

"Tungsten extraction is a subject of global interest due to is properties. These properties, such as its high melting point, have contributed to the development of metallurgical extraction processes that can be adapted to the particular chemical composition and mineralogy of the ore. In Colombia there is a research deficit in tungsten related areas, and especially with regard to its extractive metallurgy. In this study the physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization of a sample were performed. Subsequently, crushing and grinding were employed to reduce the material to a more convenient size, making it suitable for further concentration and metallurgical processes. Through physical concentration techniques it was obtained a concentrated ranging between 60 -70 % of WO3 content.INTRODUCTION Tungsten is a metal of great economic importance due to its excellent properties such as high density and extraordinary melting point 3422°C), which is indeed the highest of all the elements. Tungsten is primarily used in metal alloys, manufacture of special steels, coatings and catalysts; products of interest to both international and national industry. However; given that the use and economic value is determined by the percentage of tungsten in the mineral, particle size and chemical associations, it becomes essential to properly characterize the mineral to further define possible metallurgical extraction routes. The metallurgical processes for minerals enriched in tungsten may vary depending on location and the genesis of the ore body, which means that for each ore a particular set of operating conditions must be determined. This is important since process standardization can lead to misuse of the mineral resource. However, in Colombia there is a research deficit as it relates to minerals enriched in tungsten and to its extractive metallurgy. Then, there is a need to conduct studies that can lead to a better understanding of the ore, and to develop extraction processes for the metal of interest. EXPERIMENTAL A state of the art review was made in order to gain insights of the tungsten metallurgical process. Comminution was necessary with the aim to reduce the sample size; therefore the sample was taken into crushing and grinding stages. Concentration techniques such as magnetic separation, gravity and / or electrostatic were also applied. Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization were performed by using polished sections, grain size determination, X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques."

The study of flotation kinetics was first reported by Garcia-Zuniga1 in 1935. Since then, literature on the subject has grown with the time. 2-19 Although there is an abundance of flotation kinet¬ics models available in the literature to describe flo¬tation systems, they are mostly of academic interest and are seldom applicable for use in the industrial environment. Several reasons contribute to the wide gap in the industrial -application of the academic models. These include: 1) the lack of generality in the model, e.g., the model is limited to certain size ranges; 14 2) the academic models involve complicated mathematics; 5,6,10,11 3) confusion about the order of the flo¬tation rate, e.g., several authors proposed a first order rate model, 1,15,16 whereas the others propagated a second order rate model: 2,17,18,194) the use of an unrealistic rigid value, such as the use of a maximum recovery of 100%, 5,8,19 which is unrealistic in industrial operations; and 5) the use of graphs that confuse the reader rather than interpret information. 2,3,10 This paper intends to introduce a simple and easy to understand empirical flotation kinetics model along with a way of presenting the model in an informative graphical form, which should stimulate the interest of other practical engineers to become concerned with practical application within the mineral industry.

FMC Corporation has achieved a significant cost reduction through a new proprietary solution mining and processing technology at its Green River, Wyoming Soda Ash Facility. In the first phase, completed in October 1995, trona ore is dissolved, recovered and processed with the new technology, and then fed into an existing refining plant, replacing dry mined and calcined trona ore. The second phase, completed in April 1996, produced a fmal high purity product and increased capacity by 635,000 t/a (700,000 tpy). Both phases were completed under budget and well ahead of schedule.
