The mineral processing industry supplies raw materials to a wide variety of manufacturing sectors. Large companies such as Ford, Microsoft, and Johnson&Johnson have pledged carbon neutral supply chains in the coming decades, leaving suppliers to reevaluate their energy sources [1–3]. National Renewable Energy Lab [4] has partnered with over 700 organizations with similar goals in mind. The energy needs are broad in scope in the mineral processing industry. Generation IV of nuclear reactors, which is currently under development in both the private and public sector includes a class called microreactors like the small modular reactor XEnergy plans to install at Dow Chemical’s Gulf Coast facility by 2023 [5]. As the name implies, these are smaller than the utility scale nuclear power plants in operation today, and are intended to be more versatile. A specific reactor core design, along with modules could be selected to fit a certain application without needing to design a greenfield power plant. Basic water cooled designs could easily supply shaft work, electricity, and low grade process heat to a facility. More advanced designs, such as molten-salt-reactors and high-temperaturegas-reactors can achieve higher temperatures needed for ore roasting. Similarly, these reactors could produce hydrogen by high temperature electrolysis to use as combustion fuel and reducing atmosphere in blast furnaces.

This paper details the extensive underpinning required to hold up the 39th street Bridge while demolishing its massive support piers and building a 30ft deep Cut/ Cover RR tunnel beneath it. The underpinning/SOE support required the construction of 16 large hand dug pits 36ft deep that were reinforced and concrete filled. In addition, an extensive steel support system was tied into the bridge super structure. All of the underpinning/tunnel construction was done while a 110ton crane sat directly atop the heavily trafficked – 66 ft. wide bridge. The tunnel excavation, concrete lining and final bridge pier support work will also be presented. All work was done within 5ft of active mainline tracks and that required tight grouting behind all lagging to eliminate any track settlement.

This paper is written primarily from the standpoint of the miner and consumer of Missouri fireclays in refractory products, principally firebrick used in the linings of blast furnaces, hot metal transfer cars, the recuperators of glass melting tanks, and other allied uses involving contact with liquid metals and reactive slags. For these uses the manufacturing plant requires forecast of certain physical characteristics, as well as chemical characteristics, of the raw clays as a determination of practicability of mining, treatment such as pre -firing or calcining, and final usage area. These methods and results may leave something to be desired from an academic view, but are used my operation as an on-running guide to seeking and mining raw material. The high quality fireclays of Missouri are generally differentiated by the user as the softer, somewhat plastic, "bond" clays and the so-called flint clays suitable for a fired or unfired aggregate portion of a brick composition. The semi-plastic "bond" clays are mined in a producing area of northeast Missouri including Montgomery, Audrain, Callaway, Monroe, and Lincoln counties. In this geographic area the clays are the members of the cheltenham formation and occur in rather large lenses in which the usable members may approach 15 meters in thickness and an area of 6o to 8o acres. Overburden is dependent on the surface topography and, in our operations, varies from 8 meters to 25 meters. It can be up to 36 meters in the prairie uplands, but this is rarely strip mined. There was former mining by shaft and drift methods in which the overlying coal was also worked. These clays are primarily used as a binding material for other clay aggregates and is characterized by its lower refractoriness-cone 3o (165o c) to cone 321/2 (172o c), in terms of pyrometric cone equivalent, and an alumina - Al2o3 - content of plus or minus 31%. "The development and advancement of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has made it possible to better understand pollutant flow and distribution in deep open pit mines. Open pits located at higher latitudes, especially in the Arctic and sub-Arctic, face a unique problem due to atmospheric temperature inversion, which is prevalent during much of the winter. A three-dimensional CFD model of an actual open pit mine in the Arctic was developed to analyze the problem of pollutant growth during inversion, and mitigation of the pollutants through improved ventilation schemes. Due to the availability of mine-specific data, such as contaminant concentrations and coordinates of sampling locations, the actual 2013 pit geometry was used for model validation Concentrations predicted by the selected realizable ?-e turbulent model are compared to measured pollutant concentrations at the open pit. Pollutant concentrations at selected locations showed differences, but remained within the same order of magnitude in most cases. INTRODUCTION Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has emerged as a useful tool for ventilation modeling in underground mines (Edwards and Hwang 1999, Purushotham and Bandopadhyay 2009, Wala et al. 1998, Xu et al. 2011). Application of CFD in open pit mines has been limited, however, since most open pit mines located at lower latitudes do not encounter considerable ventilation problems. Open pits located at higher latitudes, especially the Arctic and sub-Arctic, face a unique problem due to atmospheric temperature inversion, which is prevalent during winter. A number of Russian researchers have tried to understand the air inversion and resulting pollutant transport problem by modeling air flow phenomena in open pit mines (Baklanov and Burman 1996, Baklanov 1984, Baklanov 1995, Belousov 1985, 1989, 1995). Much of their work, however, was based on numerical models and methods of finite difference. Baklanov (2000) applied a modified ?-e and a ?-l CFD model to air flow phenomena on various terrains. More recently, Choudhury (2011) used the COMSOL CFD package for modeling pollutant transport for an idealized open pit mine. Collingwood et al. (2012a, 2012b) used a two-dimensional model for fluid flow and contaminant transport at an Arctic open pit mine. The authors have also previously presented work on CFD modeling of an actual open pit mine at high latitude (Bandopadhyay et al. 2014, Raj et al. 2015a). However, the CFD work done by the above-cited researchers lacked model validation with field-measured data. Validation of a developed model is important in assessing the quality and accuracy of the predicted results. In general, experiments are done numerous times in controlled environments to assess the validity of collected data. There are two types of assessments used in CFD simulations: (1) verification and (2) validation. Model verification is checking the accuracy of the computer codes during the implementation phase of a real-world problem, within the specific limits of accuracy (Oberkampf and Trucano 2002). Since, the pollution transport model presented in this paper used the commercial ANSYS-FLUENT CFD package, verification is not needed as the program has been tested widely, and verified numerous times."

During the year of 1972 ASARCO's Silver Bell embarked upon a project that would test a modified grinding circuit using direct digital compute against the performance of its other five grinding lines, implementation and subsequent outcome of that project has been previously reported in a paper by Pitts, et al. The main purpose of the present paper will be to describe major problems incurred during the implementation of this control strategy on the remaining five primary grinding lines and their solutions. Also included will be a discussion of changes made in operating philosophy and methods used since that report was written. Description The Silver Bell concentrator is a 10,436 tonne/day copper sulfide plant supplied by ore from two separate open pits approximately 4 km. apart. As well as receiving ore from these two main pits, ore is received from several exten¬sions of both pits. The ore bodies are variable in rock type and the extensions have increased this variability. Grinding is carried out by six primary, single-stage, 3.20M x 3.66M Allis Chalmers grate discharge ball mills in closed circuit with four Krebs D20B cyclones (Fig. 1). Each of these grinding circuits is controlled by four independent but interactive control elements. These control elements are the fresh ore feed, the water added to the feed end of the mill, the water added to the ball mill discharge sump, and the cyclone feed pump speed. At the present time, instrumentation for measuring primary process variables consists of Merrick weightometers for fresh ore feed, orifice plates coupled with differential pressure transmitters (dp's) for incoming water measurements, back-pressure diaphragm coupled with a dp for estimating ball mill discharge sump level, a magnetic flowmeter for determining cyclone feed velocity and a nuclear density gauge for measuring cyclone feed density. All measuring instruments develop electrical signals that are measured as 2-10 V DC "inputs o the computer interface.

INTRODUCTION The variety of uses of coal and the wide range of characteristics of coal combine to produce a need for a wide variety of laboratory analysis. Coal is used to heat homes, produce electricity, and make coke for steel manufacture. It can also be used to produce both gaseous and liquid fuels as well as a variety of chemical products. Various applications may require specialized analytical procedures. For example, some of the procedures developed for the coke industry, such as expansion or contraction during carbonization, have little value to the power generation industry. Even for a single application, the type of analysis needed can depend on the source and/or general nature of the coal. This section provides a general overview of the types of analytical procedures commonly applied to coal from the perspective of the user of this information, not the producer. The intent is not to detail laboratory procedures, but rather to discuss the application of commonly used laboratory tests in coal preparation. Accordingly, laboratory procedures are categorized by type of information produced. Gravimetric Analysis Procedures that produce weight-based information (parts per million, pounds per cubic foot, or weight percent). Such analyses can relate to the coal's physical, chemical, or mineralogical characteristics. Volumetric Analysis Procedures that produce volume-based information (amount of a mineral present as a volume percent). The primary source of volumetric information is from petrographic analysis. Application Tests Procedures that measure some characteristic of coal that has been empirically related to some application or handling or processing step. Typically, these procedures attempt to duplicate some aspect of the commercial application at laboratory scale and may produce information in the form of an index. Applications procedures do not measure a single component of the coal but infer the combined effect of multiple components. Each class of information is discussed in the order listed. References are provided as a source of more detailed information. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) publishes the most inclusive reference to analytical procedures. This publication,16 which is revised annually, provides extensive information concerning generally accepted methods of laboratory analysis. ASTM also provides standards for sampling and some information concerning sample handling.

Perhaps no other mineral commodities in this volume have as many uses as limestone and dolomite. These carbonate rocks are the basic building blocks of the construction industry, the material from which aggregate, cement, lime, and building stone are made. Carbonate rocks, and their derived products, are used as aggregates, fluxes, glass raw material, refractories, fillers, reactive agents in sulfur-oxide removal, abrasives, soil conditioners, ingredients in a host of chemical processes, and much more. Although the use of limestone and dolomite goes back before recorded history, new uses and products are continually being found. Carbonate rocks form about 15% of the earth's sedimentary crust and are widely available for exploitation. Found extensively on all continents, they are quarried and mined from formations that range in age from Precambrian to Holocene. Reserves of carbonate rock are large and will last indefinitely, although high-purity deposits may be absent or have limited availability in certain areas. Limestone and dolomite are so useful and so abundant that in 1989 about 798 Mt were produced in the United States. In fact, about 75% of all stone quarried or mined in the United States was carbonate rock. Sand and gravel was the only mineral commodity produced in greater quantity. In this chapter we have sought to provide the general reader an overview of carbonate rocks, their composition, distribution, production, and uses. The literature on the limestone and dolomite resources of the United States and Canada is so vast and diverse that one can easily become mired in print. We tried to list those references that are easily accessible and that provide the economic geologist with a starting point for more intensive study. The table listing selected references on limestone and dolomite resources in Canada and the United States reflects our attempt to be selective rather than exhaustive and to direct the reader to the best sources of detailed information.

A description is given of an experimental ventilation control system designed, built, and tested by WVU under United States Bureau of Mines sponsorship. A description is given of the control, system used and the mine-wide microcomputer-based ventilation monitoring system used with it. Test results of experiments conducted with this system at Eastern Associated Coal Corporation's Federal No. 2 underground coal mine are presented. In addition, a brief description is given of a new microprocessor based system presently being tested.

"The Wangjialing Coal Mine is the main colliery of the China Coal Huajin Energy Limited Liability Company. The average thickness of the coal seam in District 201 is 6.21 m. Fully mechanized longwall mining was used in this district. The ventilation roadway of panel 20102 was influenced by the retreat mining of the adjacent panel 20104. Therefore, large deformation and severe roof falls occurred in this roadway, seriously influencing the safety production of this coal mine. To support the roadway, cable truss was proposed to strengthen the reinforcement of this ventilation roadway. First, numerical simulation was used to optimize the reinforcement parameters, including the cable installation angle, cable length, and eccentric distance. Based on numerical simulation results, in-situ tests were conducted in the ventilation roadway of panel 20102 with the cable truss technology. In-situ monitoring results showed that the roof-to-floor convergence and the convergence of roadway on two sides were within the safety range. Furthermore, no apparent separations occurred in the roof. These indicate that based on the designed parameters, the cable truss system can effectively maintain the roadway stability under the severe influence of the adjacent longwall mining.INTRODUCTIONCable bolts are flexible tendons composed of multi steel wires, which are wound into a strand (Chen, Hagan, and Saydam, 2018). They were initially introduced in the hard rock mining industry in the 1960s. Later, they found rapid application in coal mines to maintain the stability of excavations (Wang et al., 2015).The standard cable bolt is composed of seven steel wires with a diameter of 15.2 mm. Laboratory and in-situ tests showed that there is a low bonding capacity between the standard cable bolt and the grout (Craig and Holden, 2014; Chen, Hagan, and Saydam, 2018). Then, modified cable bolts are developed based on the standard cable bolts. They are improved by changing the surface geometry of standard cable bolts, such as birdcaged cable bolts (Hutchins et al., 1990) or nutcaged cable bolts (Hyett et al., 1993). Further tests proved that modified cable bolts have better mechanical interlock and friction between the cable bolt and grout, leading to larger load transfer capacity of cable bolts.Although cable bolts have been used for many years, failure of the cable bolting system still occurs. A common failure mode is the damage of surrounding confining medium while the cable bolt is still hanging in the roof, which is caused by the bond failure of the cable/grout interface (Hutchinson and Diederichs, 1996). To prevent the cable bolting system from failing, the cable truss system is more widely used in mining engineering."

Santa Rosa is a mid-Tertiary, volcanic-hosted, bulk-mineable, open-pitable, heap-leachable, gold-silver deposit. It is the product of hydrothermal mineralization along an arcuate segment of a caldera collapse ring fault in a probable maar volcanic setting. This segment was later broken by radial faults. Gold occurs principally as electrum finely disseminated through intermediate tuffs, and associated with pyrite, at Santa Rosa. The nearby Alto de la Mina deposit displays stockwork silica-pyrite-gold in a tectonically and hydrothermally shattered andesite flow. Miocene epithermal mineralization was accompanied by central silicification and pyritization and more distal argillization. An andesite flow cap rock at Santa Rosa played a pivotal role as an upward permeability barrier. Highest gold grades and most intense alteration occur closest to the ring faults and immediately beneath the andesite flow. Supergene alteration effects on the gold distribution are minimal.

"The ultimate objectives of the post-tensioned strands are to connect the precast segments into a ring and provide pre-stress in the tunnel circumference. The method involves inserting the strand through the preliminary embedded duct in the precast concrete segments and then tensioning the strand by jack and fastening it. The post-tensioned strand eliminates the necessity of bolt connections between the segments and may reduce the labor cost and increase speed of lining construction. Pre-stressing of the segmental lining reduces the steel reinforcement or fiber volume in precast segments and/or thickness of the precast segments which would result in reducing the manufacturing cost of them. Pre-stressing would reduce cracking and increase water tightness, and would provide smooth intrados due to eliminated bolt joints and pockets in the tunnel lining. Pre-stressing would increase resistance to internal pressures as well. Further, this system could work very well structurally in tunnels with squeezing rock or tunnels with high seismic loadings. INTRODUCTION OF THE METHODPost-tensioning is commonly used in the construction of bridges, large buildings, nuclear power stations, and water tanks but its utilization in tunnels is still in its infancy.The precast pre-stressed concrete segmental lining can be used for shield tunnels. Originally, the term solution mining applied to a dissolution, washing, or "brining" of soluble salts such as halite (common table salt), potash or trona. After the mid-sixties, however, the definition has been expanded to include heap and dump leaching, in-place (in situ) leaching, removal of oil from tar sands, extraction of sulfur from deep wells by the Frasch process and the recovery of metalliferous solutions from geothermal sources. Solution mining is also known as borehole, non-shaft, or chemical mining; the extraction of soluble mineral values from a variety of ores using appropriate solvents and chemicals. Solution mining frequently involves chemical changes; for example, copper usually goes into solution as copper sulfate, gold and silver as a cyanide compound, and uranium as a sulfate or uranyl tricarbonate. The valuable constituent is removed from the solid body of the ore by mass transfer to a aqueous solution.

During the past ten years detailed elemental analyses of approximately 8,000 well-documented samples of coils in the United States (including Alaska) have been produced by the U.S. Geological Survey and the various State geological surveys. Examples of data listings include Swanson and others (1976) Gluskoter and others (1977) Hatch, Affolter, and Davis (1979), and Wedge and Hatch (1980). These analyses serve as a basis for evaluating elemental abundances in coals from the various coal province, regions, and fields. When combined with additional geological and geochemical data, some of these analyses give insight into when certain elements were introduced into coals, and which physical and geochemical parameters are most important in determining coal elemental composition.

Several final pits in the Seneca No. 1 Surface Coal Mine were abandoned in the 1960's without being reclaimed. In addition, a progressive landslide aggravated by the abandoned mine land conditions was threatening a county road and private property. An AML-funded project to stabilize the landslide and reclaim the final pits was completed in 1986 for the Colorado Division of Mines and Geology (formerly Colorado Mine Land Reclamation Division). The site was visited after ten growing seasons. The land is stable and the vegetation re-establishment is strong. Volunteer native plant species are now invading the reclaimed sites.

"Mining industry as a source of raw material is essential to society however, it lacks of good reputation due to the type of management historically applied to many of its social and environmental impacts. It is argued that this situation has hampered the obtaining of social license to operate of a lot of mining projects around the world. The last considerations are very common in Latin American countries. As a result, the mining sector has understood that the viability of the business long term is associated with more profit for the shareholders but also with activities that improve the livelihoods of local communities, enhance the capabilities of local governments and preserve the ecosystems around the projects. Nevertheless, recent studios have shown that most of the current advances to incorporate sustainability concepts in mining have been mainly focused on control and the prevention of environmental and social impacts of extractive activities. Thus, contributing to the development of territories around mining projects constitutes a fundamental aspect of the business competitiveness through reducing cost and risks of stopping projects, innovating new ways of relationship with stakeholders, improving the level of reputation of the industry as well as its position in the market. However, this contribution requires formal strategies and models that enable companies understand the different resources in the territories where their mining activities are developed and those resource transformations, in order to establish the best way to articulate the project with the territory, pursuing an effective contribution to its development, truly sustainable over time even after the mine closure. CONTEXT Currently in the world but especially in developing countries such as Latin Americans, different stakeholders are increasingly vigilant of how mining companies carry out their activities in terms of socio-economic and environmental management of territories, not only for its impact on the livelihoods of the communities that inhabit them, but also because many demanders of raw materials -both countries and companies- have set sustainability standards as a prerequisite to establishing business relationships with mining companies, such as the recently declared Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 (UN, 2015). Accordingly, decide underinvest or not to invest in sustainability issues carries risks for mining companies. However, invest much in the wrong way may involve the same risks. Managers are concerned to ensure profits, and therefore they decide carefully how to invest in the areas of production, R & D or marketing. Likewise, they should think strategically about investing in initiatives related to sustainability. This if they really want that those investments in fact help to improve the competitiveness of the company. The mining industry benefits from natural capital that extracts, so it should implement strategies that lead to remunerate such benefit to the territories (Almaguer, 2007). One option is through the transformation of natural capital in other types of non-existent capital or poorly developed in their areas of influence. In this way, the value generated by the extraction of underground resources is shared and additionally contributing to improving the quality of life of the communities. Historically, mining industry has been into several problems to achieve this, which represents one of the aspects that has most influenced the current reputation of mining industry in some regions of Latin America. Many communities, local governments and civil society organizations continue to associate this activity with the destruction of the social fabric and ecosystems in the territories, and their opposition against companies working in the areas has led to affect the operational continuity of many projects (Hamann, 2003; Prno and Scott, 2012; Slack, 2012)."

INTRODUCTION Denmark is a small country with a population of about 5.5 million in the north of Europe. A substantial part of Denmark consists of islands, and the Danes have been familiar with ferry links between their islands for ages. However, their wish for fixed links has resulted in the con¬struction of bridges between most of Denmark's islands in this century. (Fig. 1) A fixed link across the Store Belt or Great Belt, Denmark's most important waterway bet¬ween the island of Fyn and main island of Sjaelland, on which the capital of Copenhagen is situated, has remained to be constructed hitherto. In 1987, the Danish government decided that the Great Belt should be crossed by a fixed link, incorporating a two-track railway line and four-lane motorway. The Storebaelt Forbindelsen AS, a joint stock company in the sole ownership of the Dan¬ish state, has been established for the purpose of planning, constructing and operating the Great Belt Link. The company will refinance the construction project by charging toll to the motorway users and fees to the state railway. Here it should be mentioned that Denmark and Sweden are about to jointly realize the fixed rail and road link across the Øresund or The Sound between Denmark and Sweden on the basis of the realization model of the Great Belt link. At present, the project is at the com¬petitive tendering or contract awarding stage. In the near future, also the third fixed link of comparable extent, that is the crossing of the Fehmarn Belt between Denmark and Germany, will go into the decisive projecting stage prob¬ably in conformity with the aforementioned pattern. Going back to the Great Belt, it should be noted that this fixed link involves three exten¬sive sections and has been under construction since December 1988.

Exploration by Anaconda Minerals Co. in the Rico area from 1978 through 1983 resulted in dis¬covery of the Silver Creek molybdenum deposit. The drill-indicated resource is 40 Mt (44 million st) of 0.31% Mo, and projections suggest that the deposit may exceed 182 Mt (200 million st). No source intrusion has been intersected by drilling, but its presence is sugested by intramineral silicic alkali-alaskite porphyry dikes observed at the surface and in drill holes. Age dates and fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit was formed 5.2 ± 0.2 m.y. ago and that more than 1200 (3937 ft) of cover has since been removed by erosion. The deposit is hosted by Precambrian quartzite and greenstone, and Paleozoic sediments. Three prominent faults intersect in the vicinity of the molybdenum deposit, and one of these, the Last Chance fault, strongly influenced the shape and location of the deposit. The juxtaposition of host rocks across the Last Chance fault reflects significant offset spanning at least three different periods. Wallrock alteration associated with the deposit includes potassic, phyllic, and propylitic zones in noncalcareous rocks and garnet and anhydrite-diopside zones in the carbonates. All +0.2% Mo mineralization is within the potassic and garnet zones. Premineral faults that intersect the deposit contain the only surface molybdenum, tungsten, and fluorine anomalies. Dispersion halos of the indicator elements were defined by drilling in the discovery phase of exploration, and are particularly well-developed in the hanging wall of the Last Chance fault.

Longwall mining operations continue to increase extraction rates and the potential to generate higher amounts of airborne respirable dust (ARD). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has gathered data from underground longwall surveys and laboratory crushing tests to identify the important factors influencing the amount of ARD levels generated. Coal-seam characteristics, operational parameters (i.e.,cut sequence, mining height, etc.), extraction rates and dust-control parameters (i.e., airflow, water flow, etc.) were examined to determine their influence on ARD levels measured at longwalls during actual mining operations. ARD generated by a laboratory crusher while crushing bituminous coal samples collected from underground longwalls was also examined to determine if there were cor relations with coal-seam properties. Results from the longwall and laboratory data collected indicated that low-ash, high-volatile coals (low moist fuel ratio or MFR coals) generate higher amounts of ARD. It was found that face ventilation and water application to the coal product are essential elements to controlling longwall ARD levels.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) constructed four passive biochemical reactor systems (BCRs) to treat mining influenced water (MIW) in the Bunker Hill Superfund area near Coeur D?Alene, Idaho between 2002 and 2003. Initially, the BCRs operated very effectively. However, in the past couple of years, the zinc removal effectiveness of the four BLM BCRs has declined [1]. The central objective of this study was to characterize the microbial communities and substrate present within the BLM BCRs and to use these factors to propose strategies to promote sustained sulfate reduction levels. Microbial communities were characterized by quantifying total bacteria and sulfate reducing species. Substrate was characterized by quantifying the percent organic, acid soluble organic, acid insoluble organic, and bioavailable material within the BCR. The results suggest the depletion of bioavailable organic substrates is the primary cause of the decline in zinc removal and not the microbial community structure. The ability to assess the amount of bioavailable organic substrate and microbial community is important to the understanding of the sulfate reducing capacity of the BLM BCRs and developing strategies to facilitate performance enhancement of the current BLM BCRs. The characterization of organic substrate and microbial community structure are also important to improving design of future passive treatment systems for mining influenced waters.

"Coal mines opting for longwall mining or its variations rely on the main and tail gates for production. Stability of these entries or crosscuts is crucial in coal mining operations. Roof or strata failure can be fatal, may lead to property loss and delay in production. Failure of the gates depends upon many factors including the mining method, panel dimensions, pillar width, mine depth, caving rate, dimensions of gates and roof strength properties. In Pakistan coal is mined through a variation of longwall mining method with almost no mechanization while using timber as a primary support. Timber support as chock is very useful in coal mines especially in overhanging face. Similarly gate entries and coal faces are supported by chock supports throughout their length. In this paper the stability of the longwall gate is assessed for a typical coal mine in Pakistan by using finite element code. Numerical modelling considerations for gate entries are discussed. A model parametric study is performed for key factors. The results showed that the existing mining practice is not suitable and there is a need to review the mining approach. INTRODUCTION Main and tail gate entries leading to longwall mining panel play a crucial role in production cycle. Failure of any of these may lead to loss of life, property and production delays. The stability of gate entries depends primarily on the nature of loading and stresses incurred. It is relatively easier to assess the ground response to production for common longwall mining panel. In thin-seam coal mines the gate entries are generally supported throughout their length by timber made chock supports. The tailgates receive huge deformations and stresses during the mining and backfilling cycle. The chock supports are required to take care of rock falls leading to blockage of entries causing production delays and loss of capital. A number of supports are available for supporting the gate entries (Hoek and Brown 1980; Brady and Brown 1985). The support system can be selected based on load-deformation characteristics including the yielding behavior, pre- and post-yielding behavior (Barczak, 2003). The principal of support selection is that the support characteristics must match the ground response in order to maintain the gate entries (Mucho, et al., 1999). It has been observed that thin-seam mining (<1 m) is very challenging and it is necessary to develop an understanding of ground mechanics before the selection of an efficient support system Dolinar (2003). The chock supports have been tested for load-deformation characteristics in the laboratory (Barczak 2003). But the ground and support interaction, response and loads must be assessed for individual site. This can be accomplished by in-situ testing and observations at few locations. The generated data is generally insufficient for complete understanding. Numerical models can combine the data generated in the laboratory and on-site to fulfill the requirements."
