Let us begin our discussion by looking at historical and current levels of sales of both natural and synthetic zeolites on a world-wide basis. Due to the understandable reluctance of some companies to disclose sales data, some estimation has been necessary regarding the tonnages and values shown in Table 1. We are confident, however, that they are within acceptable limits, especially the numbers referring to natural zeolite.

Considerable potential for metallic mineral resources in the lower Proterozoic rock of the Lake Superior region exists (Mudrey and Kalliokoski, in press). Most of the identified resources occur within a 2.0- to 1.9-b.y.-old lithotectonic assemblage characterized by extensive sedimentary strata in the north and thick volcanic se- quences in the south, all deposited on a two-terrane, composite basement of Archean age (DeMattis, 1989). Since the late 1960s, measured resources of nearly 90 Mt (100 million st) of typical volcanogenic massive sulfide at eight localities in Wisconsin have been discovered. The largest of these, near Crandon, contains about 61 Mt (67 million st) of ore averaging 5.6% zinc, 1.1 % copper, and 0.5% lead. Although none of these properties are in production, estimates by Mudrey (1978) suggest that Wisconsin could become a major contributor of newly mined zinc and copper in the United States. These discoveries and uranium and gold discoveries in the Canadian Precambrian are what have led to in- creased metallic mineral exploration throughout the northern half of Wisconsin (Fig. 1). In this chapter, we discuss the geology and legal framework in which the Proterozoic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits were found. Exploration activities for other metals have generally been negative, and have been background noise for the legislative activities related to the massive sulfide discoveries. Uranium exploration has been consistently negative, although several different environments have been assessed. Other metal discoveries. such as titanium/vanadium, have been subeconomic.

"INTRODUCTION Molybdenite is typically produced as a co-product in the copper ore flotation process. At the Rio Tinto Kennecott Concentrator (RTKC) in Copperton, Utah, the molybdenite is initially floated with copper sulfides and other value minerals producing a Cu-Mo concentrate. This is then separated in the molybdenum plant by depressing copper sulfides and pyrite and floating only molybdenite. The molybdenum plant in RTKC comprises the rougher circuit and several stages of cleaning to achieve a certain grade requirement of Mo. The rougher circuit is where the first stage of separation occurs. Cu sulfides and pyrite are depressed in the rougher circuit by adding NaSH under nitrogen and in the cleaner circuit by adding NaSH under air. The depression of Cu sulfides (and pyrite) by NaSH is related to the redox activity1. It is important therefore to maintain a reducing potential in the circuit in order to achieve effective Cu-Mo separation. If the rougher circuit is under air, like RTKC’s molybdenum cleaner circuits, it is harder to maintain the target redox potential because NaSH oxidizes rapidly in the presence of air thereby increasing NaSH consumption significantly. CU-MO SEPARATION AND ROLE OF PULP POTENTIAL The collector adsorption on copper sulfide minerals is through an electrochemical mechanism2. The collector changes the surface chemistry of the Cu mineral allowing it to float. Molybdenite, or MoS2, on the other hand, floats readily in the presence of a frother as it is naturally hydrophobic. Usually, hydrocarbon oil extenders such as diesel or burner oil are added to enhance Mo recovery. In order to effectively separate Cu from Mo, the collector complex on the copper surface needs to be destabilized or desorbed using a reducing agent such as NaSH or Nokes. As long as the circuit is under highly reducing conditions, the collector remains detached from the sulfide mineral surface allowing Cu sulfide depression. Therefore, it is important to measure the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) continually and maintain the reducing condition with addition of NaSH. For a given collector each mineral will have a characteristic potential or electrochemical window for flotation to occur3, therefore, it is necessary to reduce the potential outside of this window in order to effectively separate Cu and Fe sulfides from MoS2 minerals2. In RTKC plant, the target reducing condition is between -450 to -550 mV to effectively destabilize the collector and depress Cu and Fe minerals. Typically the dosage of NaSH used in the molybdenum plant could range from 6 to 30 gallons/min (gpm). The high dosage of NaSH could pose risk of H2S exposure. RTKC wanted to evaluate alternatives to NaSH in order to reduce its consumption and minimize risk of H2S gas generation."

Northwestern Resources Co. (NWR) was established in 1972 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Western Energy Company of Butte, Montana, to acquire, explore, develop, and produce energy resources outside the state of Montana. Western Energy is a coal mining company with successful operations in Montana and Wyoming. In 1974, NWR acquired its first lignite lease in Texas. NWR eventually acquired a large leasehold in central Texas, which was identified as having a high potential for future production. In 1979. NWR contracted to supply lignite to Utility Fuels, Inc. (UFI), a fuel affiliate of Houston Lighting and Power Company (HL&P). This project, together with leases held by UFI, became the Jewett Mine. Lignite from the Jewett Mine is used as fuel at the adjacent HL&P Limestone Electric Generating Station, at an annual rate of approximately 7.3 Gkg (eight (8) million tons) per year.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical models, particularly those based on the finite element method, have been available to aid in en¬gineering design of underground mining excavations for over ten years. Despite this fact there are remarkably few cases of their use in mine design documented in the literature. It is therefore to be anticipated that many potential users of these models are relatively unaware of their capabilities and limitations and also of the form and detail of geotechnical data needed for their success¬ful application. This subsection attempts to address this problem by discussing the different types of numerical models now available and by noting how some of them have been used to study a variety of problems associated with underground mining. The subsection concludes by discussing the applica¬tion of the displacement discontinuity method to the de¬sign of possible mining systems for the copper-nickel deposits of northeastern Minnesota. The object of the analyses, which were nonsite specific, was to determine the significance of geotechnical parameters, such as ini¬tial stress and rock structure, on the stability of under¬ground excavations and hence to provide guidance for future geotechnical investigation. NUMERICAL MODELS In the geomechanical design of underground mining openings, use is made of numerical models that repre¬sent or simulate the large-scale mechanical behavior of rock. There has been less interest in analysis involving fluid flow and heat transfer, but with increasing interest in such areas as in-situ retorting and solution mining it is likely that there will be a growing need for numerical models embracing and coupling all three physical proc¬esses. However, the emphasis in this subsection will be on mechanical behavior. Models which simulate such behavior will be divided into two groups: continuum models and discontinuum models. These will be dis¬cussed in turn in order that some insight into alternative solution strategies and their merits may be gained. Continuum Models Almost all geomechanical numerical models must be classed as continuum models even though particular computer codes incorporate special provisions for rep¬resenting discontinuities such as faults, bedding planes, or joints. They are continuum models because they pro¬vide solutions for cases where material behavior is governed by the differential equations of continuum mechanics. Two basic solution strategies for such equa¬tions may be identified immediately: the differential ap¬proach and the integral approach. In the differential approach a means of approximating the differential equations over the entire region of interest is sought. In the integral approach use is made of fundamental solutions from continuum mechanics, and these are used to construct a solution to the whole problem, making approximations only on the boundaries of the region of interest. The several differential and integral methods are identified in Table 1. Differential Methods: Problems in continuum me¬chanics involve the solution of three types of partial differential equations. Two of these govern the behavior in so-called initial value problems, in which variables change both in time and in space. Examples of such problems include nonsteady heat transfer and fluid flow, and stress wave propagation. The last type of partial differential equation governs the behavior in boundary value problems. In these, variation is in space but not in time. Solution of initial value problems may be achieved in two significantly different methods: implicit and ex¬plicit. The differences between these two methods will be illustrated by considering a very simple initial value problem, that of one-dimensional heat diffusion. The equation governing this process may be written as: [ ] where T is temperature, K is thermal conductivity, p is density, c is specific heat, t is time, and x is the spacial coordinate. In finite difference form this equation might be written as: [ ] where the superscripts refer to the time and the sub¬scripts to the spacial location. Several solution strategies for this equation have been used. Two important ones may be illustrated very simply by discussing the signifi¬cance of the superscript * on the right-hand side of the equation. If i + 1 is substituted for * then the second derivative of the temperature with respect to distance is evaluated at the end of the next time step (using tem¬peratures not already known). Such an approach leads to a set of equations involving unknown temperatures and a solution procedure which is referred to as being implicit. The important characteristic of the implicit procedure is that it leads to a set of equations that must be solved for each time at which the temperature dis¬tribution is required. If instead of substituting (i + 1) for the superscript *, i is substituted, the following equation is obtained: [ ] {In this case the new temperature is defined in terms of an already known temperature distribution. The effluent from the bio-oxidation of arsenopyrite contains high concentrations of iron(III) and arsenic(V), the pH being in the range 1.0-1.3. The use of lime to increase the pH causes the precipitation of calcium sulfate, calcium arsenate and a mixture of solids containing calcium, iron and arsenic. The presence of calcium is due to slaked lime encapsulated by the iron arsenate precipitates. These iron arsenate solids are related to known minerals. The use of sodium hydroxide to effect the precipitation of iron and arsenic produces solids which are more stable than those produce by using slaked lime. The use of limewater produces an initial precipitate of calcium arsenate.

To improve coal flotation Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Research Department has been working on a number of related problems based on both physical and chemical factors. The ideal is of course full understanding of the interrelated effects of both sets of factors. However, detailed studies5 of each physical factor have produced immediately usable results in commercial coal flotation and are providing the bas is for our current work on the effect of chemical factors. Since these detailed studies provided the basis for the present investigation of froth sprinkling, their key results are highlighted here. For example, for a highly floatable bituminous coal, particle floatability was shown to be directly related to the percentage of coal surface available for bubble attachment and inversely related to particle mass. The data also underscored that in a given size range the addition of mineral matter to a particle makes flotation more difficult both by adding to the mass of the particle and by decreasing the amount of coal surface available for bubble attachment. Size also affects particle floatability in that as the size of particles of a given specific gravity increases, mass increases and the ratio between coal surface area and mass of the particle decreases. Flotation tests showed that any recovery of the coarsest particles in a coal feed is accompanied by progressively higher recovery of finer and finer particles. Consequently, fine high-specific-gravity particles are recovered with the coarse good coal. As a result, when the entire 14M x 0 size range is processed by froth flotation, the good coarse coal is contaminated with high-specific-gravity fines. It is the small quantities of these fines that must be rejected from the froth product if flotation efficiency is to be increased above its present level.

The purpose of the 3DOPT Program is to determine, starting from drill hole data, the optimum economic mining limits for an open pit. The economic limits are defined as those which maximize total profit, i. e. total mineral value mined less the total mining and milling costs, subject to the restriction imposed by the pit slopes. To accomplish this, the program employs the following: (1) A three dimensional matrix of equal sized blocks in order to file the engineering data and the cost/value data required to develop the profit figure for each block of ore/waste. (2) A graph algorithm developed specifically for optimizing these profits.1

"The reliable prediction of service lifetime of tunnel constructions is of essential technical and economic interest. Polymers used for tunnel liners have to fulfill the requirement of 100 years lifetime. However, today no reliably proven test method is available which confirms such long lifetimes. The current paper introduces a recently started research project which focuses on lifetime prediction of highly flexible, very low density polyethylene (VLDPE) for tunnel geomembranes. Different PE grades in combination with different antioxidant packages are conditioned at elevated temperatures and immersed in different media. Initial results confirmed significant material aging of unstabilized resins already after exposure of up to 34 weeks, at least at the highest exposure temperature of 80 °C. To consider application relevant material properties the material characterization was done by means of tensile tests and dynamic oxidation induction temperature tests. High pressure liquid chromatography was used for further investigation of antioxidant consumption kinetics. 1. INTRODUCTION For a reliable service of modern tunnel constructions a sustainable proofing against water infiltration is essential for the lifetime of the structure. Geomembranes made of polymeric materials have been used successfully for tunnel lining since several decades. Whereas previous geomembranes usually were made of plasticized polyvinylchloride (PVC-P), due to several technical advantages today very low density polyethylene (VLDPE) has become a more and more popular material for such applications. For modern geomembranes, current guidelines expect minimum lifetimes of at least 100 years (ÖBV-Richtlinie 2012). In contrast to this requirement it must be considered that today no test methodology is available which reliably confirms such long lifetimes of polymeric materials."

Rock disintegration processes are usually inefficient and costly operations in mineral beneficiation, mine development and oil well preparations. Thus, there is a strong need for improving the energy efficiency of unit operations such as drilling and comminution. The effects of selected cations and anions on drilling efficiency in a hard rock formation (Dakota Sandstone) were studied. The zeta potentials and the tensile strengths of the drilled samples were measured under similar chemical conditions. The chemicals tested included MgCl2, Na2CO3, AlCl3, NaCl and Dodecylammonium chloride. The results indicated that drilling rates can be enhanced or retarded depending on chemical conditions such as the solution pH and the type and concentration of reagents. Drilling data are correlated with mechanical (tensile strength) and interfacial (zeta potential) properties of the rock formation. The mechanisms involved are discussed in light of Rehbinder's and Westwood's theories.

According to the 1966 Bureau of Mines Mineral Year Book only three states reported production of lignite in that year. These state: were North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota; although it is known that there is production of lignite in Texas, California and, perhaps, Arkansas. In the year 1966 North Dakota produced 3,543,000 tons of lignite, Montana produced 328,000 tons of lignite, and South Dakota produced 10,000 tons of lignite. In view of the fact that North Dakota produces approximately 95 per cent of all the lignite reported in the United States, in discussing lignite mining, my remarks will be confined to lignite mining as conducted in North Dakota and will be confined to the production of lignite by stripping methods, as this is the predominate method used today. The first lignite mining in Worth Dakota, undoubtedly, was done by people settling in the western part of the state where wood was scarce and where lignite is exposed in the banks of creeks and ravines. The first production records were kept in 1884 and indicate that 35,000 tons of lignite were mined that year. The growth of the lignite industry has been very slow during the intervening period, but in 1966 production started to increase, and it is now indicated that production in the next few years may approach 6,000,000 tons per year. Ninety-seven per cent of the lignite produced in the lignite area of the Midwest is utilized in the generation of electric power, and it is anticipated that this use will predominate during the next two decades.

For the purposes of this presentation, "refractory clay" is intended to include any clay suitable for refractory products and thus represents a description based on industrial application. Other common examples based on use would be white-ware clay, bleaching clay, paper clay, or cement clay. Most users and producers of refractories have specific quality requirements which determine the quality or type of clay that can be utilized. Many clays can however be interchanged or substituted in use by changing manufacturing processes or upgrading less desirable clays. U.S. Bureau of Mines publications (Ampian, 1985) categorize days into six groups. These are kaolin, fire clay, ball clay, bentonite, fuller's earth, and common clay. These are practical groupings based on clay production and usage in the United States. Among these groups bentonite, fuller's earth, and common clay are primarily composed of the minerals, smectite, illite, or chlorite, and are non-refractory. Kaolin, ball clay, and fire clay are commonly used in refractories and thus qualify as refractory clays.

An integrated statistical-geostatistical modelling of gold exploration data of Gurahar Pahar prospect of Mahakoshal greenstone belt in Central India has been attempted. Statistical modelling of gold accumulation and width reveal a positively skewed 2-parameter lognormal distribution fit with an estimate of mean gold as 0.84 gram/tonne. Geostatistical modelling provided a spherical semi-variogram function fit with mean kriged estimate and mean kriging variance of gold as 0.76 gram/tonne and 0.23 (gram/tonne)2 -respectively. Ore inventory and grade-tonnage relationships for a selected part provided an estimate of 3,36,000 tomes of ore with an average gold of 0.76 gram/tonne at 0.5 gram/tonne cutoff grade.

Horizontal drilling in coal mines is a relatively new technology. The earliest recorded drilling in the United States was done in 1952 at the Humphrey Mine of Consolidation Coal Company for degasification of coal seams. Spindler and Poundstone experimented with vertical and horizontal holes for eight years. They concluded in 1960 that horizontal drilling in advance of underground mining appeared to offer the most promising prospect (for degasification) but effective and extensive application would be dependent upon the ability to drill long holes, possibly 300-to 600 m, with reasonably precise directional control and within practical cost limits.(1) Mining Research Division of Continental Oil Company, the parent company of Consolidation Coal Company, began a research program in the early 1970's to achieve the above objective. The technology needed to drill nearly 300 m in advance of working faces was developed by 1975 and experiments on advance degasification with such deep holes began in 1976. Preliminary Its of this research have already been published.(2) To date nearly 4500 m of horizontal holes have been drilled for advance degasification and earlier results were reconfirmed. In summary, these are: 1) The greatest impact of these boreholes was felt in the face area where methane concentrations were reduced to nearly 0.3 percent in course of two to three months from original values of nearly 0.95 percent.

A cathodic decomposition model was examined for both pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in an attempt to analyze the formation of surface coatings in deoxygenated solutions at natural, near neutral pH. Combination potentials established between the mineral-grinding media pair were simulated by applying a potential of -0.455 V (vs. a standard hydrogen electrode) either to a pyrrhotite or to a chalcopyrite electrode. Chronoamperometry was used to study the polarization behaviors and alteration of mineral surfaces through cathodic processes. The kinetic parameters of cathodic decomposition of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite were determined and compared. It was concluded that pyrrhotite decomposed faster than chalcopyrite in near-neutral pH solutions. Both minerals were then covered by a film consist¬ing mainly of iron hydroxides, which adversely affected their flotation.

Introduction The best way to eliminate the possibility of rapid excavation in tunnel work is to start an argument between Owner Engineer and Contractor. And arguments are readily started when work is progressed without a frank open agreement on the rules of the game. Fifty years ago a tunnel contractor took a job to excavate and line a tunnel, providing all labor and materials under the guidance and continuous instruction of the Engineer who provided all survey work, checked each new heading and set the lines for the next round of drill holes, usually designed and ordered protective measures, kept record of progress and controlled payment for the work. In my first job in a tunnel, muck cars were loaded by hand and hauled by donkeys. Progress was, at today's criteria, not rapid. The Contractor or in the case of a large concern, his executive field representative was always at the site, knew most of his men by name, and there was a mutual feeling of respect between him and the Engineer in charge of the work. Misunderstandings were cleared up when they came up, expeditiously and fairly, even though satisfaction was not always expressed. The Owner came for the ground breaking and usually for the holing through shot. The Owner had full reliance on the Engineer's ability and integrity. The Engineer recognized the Contractor's expertise in being able to man the job and produce results.

This paper describes the development of the underground mining methods employed for narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies at the Isa Lead Mine. Cut-and-fill methods were the chief underground mining methods for the narrow orebodies at the mine over 35 years ago. Benching methods were introduced approximately two decades later, and quickly replacing the cut-and-fill methods. The cut-and-fill methods and the benching methods are briefly reviewed in the paper. The benching methods and technologies have been continually evolving and one of the recent achievements is a multi-lift benching method. The multi-lift benching method is described in detail.

Both water pollution and proposed solid waste disposal regulations have a definite effect on the copper leaching industry and some of the major factors affecting the industry are discussed in this paper. New developments of the NDPS are discussed with emphasis on the "toxic" or priority pollutants and EPA's philosophy on the control of these pollutants, The protection of groundwater is the prime aim of RCRA through solid/hazardous waste management. Some of the major elements of the RCA regulations that will affect the copper leaching industry are discussed.

After some decades of lying low and being treated as a second rate fuel, coal is back in the news. Production is rising. Predictions are for an ever expanding use, and they differ only in their rates of increase. Even the FBI is involved in trying to stop fraudulent sales of non-existent coal lands and leases to the innocent. In short, we have a nearly chaotic boom on our hands. Obviously our energy production base is in the process of undergoing a major shift, and the process will present many problems. However, there is little doubt that the industry has the basic strength and organization to be able to deal with the new issues that will arise as a result of these shifts in production and use of coal. After all, it does produce nearly 800 M tpy now, and coal is the single biggest fuel for generation of electricity. This role of coal is illustrated in the table below, which shows the coal equivalent quantities of various fuels used in the production of electricity.
