In the operation of today's large scale ore-processing mills, it is extremely important to have some way of making an objective evalu¬ation of the performance of the available flotation reagents. Attempts to do this may often result in inconclusive findings since the magnitude of the difference in the mill results for any two reagents is apt to be quite small compared to the variability introduced by the process and 'the analytical procedures used to measure them. In cases where two reagents give vastly; different mill results, evaluation becomes a simple matter and as such deserves no further attention here. A question of primary concern, however, is how a mill can go about evaluating the performance of two reagents which may, for example, give a difference of only 0.001% copper in the-tailings or of 0.2% in copper recovery. The casual observer may feel that such small differences may be of little importance, but in a mill-whose daily tonnage is between 30 and 40 thousand, these differences could mean a substantial savings. Before the presentation of an actual example of a reagent testing scheme designed for just this-purpose, perhaps a few minutes should be devoted to a review of some statistical methodology to be used later in the discussion.

The thermal draught within ventilation networks of underground mines depends to a great extent on the shafts depths and degree of change of ventilating air density. When the topology and space orientation of a ventilation network are constant, the dynamics of thermal draught is determined mainly by the variations of the heat- and mass-transfer processes in the openings. This conclusion follows from the well known basic theoretical notions about the thermal draught-aerostatics and thermodynamics [1]. Quantitative evaluation about the influence of heat- and mass-transfer processes on dynamics of thermal draught could be made through: direct mine measurements, special experiments and with the aid of mathematical models. The first two methods produce sufficiently accurative results, however it is very difficult to perform such studies, particularly when these processes are evaluated within a large scope and multifactor aspects. Mathematical models of thermal draught allow to overcome easily these difficulties. The degree of accuracy of results, obtained by this method, depends to a great extent on the degree of approximation achieved by the model to the real heat- and mass-transfer processes. In this paper, with the aid of Bulgarian developed method, algorithm and computer program V WT-4 - for complex evaluation of ventilation parameters in active mine ventilation networks [2], the authors investigate some changes in the thermal draught. Aqueous SO2 (sulfurous acid) is an interesting chemical compound. It functions as a reagent in various hydrometallurgical systems, but also represents an undesirable constituent in pyro- and hydrometallurgical effluent solutions. When present in such streams, SO2 can be oxidized to the more stable sulfate form to avoid exsolution of SO2 as a source of fugitive emissions and to simplify standard water treatment plant operation. This study provides information on the stoichiometry, kinetics and mechanism of SO2 oxidation using oxygen and an iron salt catalyst with solutions containing 0.05 to 20.0 g/l S02. Other test variables include iron salt concentration, oxygen pressure, temperature, degree of agitation and pH.

Underground water is part of a continuing hydrologic cycle, which involves all elements of water occurrence. All groundwater of economic importance is in process of movement through a porous rock stratum from a place of intake or recharge to a place of disposal. Groundwater moves and is contained in fractures in the rock and/or in intergranular spaces of porous formations. Where there have been no water developments by man, groundwater is in a state of approximate equilibrium and the forces of replenishment and discharge are in balance. Thus, groundwater, unlike other mineral resources, is constantly being replenished in most areas at a rate which is measurable and which is important in the planning of its utilization. As illustrated by Figure 1, replenishment of groundwater supplies results from the direct penetration of rainfall through the soil to the water table, by seepage from surface streams or ponds, and/or by subsurface movement from an adjacent groundwater body. Under natural discharge conditions, water is commonly consumed by transpiration of trees and other types of vegetation, by flows from springs, by evaporation from shallow depths below the surface, and seepage into streams that traverse the area.

"Roof bolting has long been used in underground mines across the world to provide ground support. Modern roof bolts are cheap and easy to install with the use of specialized machines as a part of the production cycle. Lhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground room and pillar limestone mine that uses mechanically anchored roof bolts for ground support. The mine currently employs two different roof bolting patterns: a standard 5 × 5 foot pattern, and a 2.5 × 2.5 foot pattern for use in areas with particularly hazardous roof conditions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relative effectiveness of each bolting pattern.A series of numerical models were created using RocScience’s RS2. The models were based on a symmetrical section of the mine at its deepest point, and were modeled using Generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion along with a discrete fracture network. A series of sensitivity analyses were performed on the models by varying parameters such as joint friction angle, crack persistence, joint randomization, and tensile strength of the limestone. Based on the results of the original models and sensitivity analyses, it appears that the standard bolting pattern provides sufficient roof support capacity under almost all the expected conditions at the mine, since factors of safety below the design value of 1.5 were only found for individual bolts in a few of the worst test cases considered. These results can help improve the Mine’s productivity and reduce operating costs without compromising safety.INTRODUCTION AND CASE STUDY DESCRIPTIONLhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground limestone mine located in Crab Orchard, Tennessee. The mine is located under an 800-foot-high mountain, and outcrops on three sides. The mine is accessed through three separate portals and has two main levels, along with a partially developed third level. Extraction is accomplished by the room and pillar method using 50 × 50 feet pillars and 50 × 50 feet rooms. The mining height is limited to 50 feet to keep the pillar width to height ratio around 1.0. Each heading is excavated in a two-stage process that consists of a 30-foot-tall top heading and a 20-foot-tall bench. A distance of at least 30 feet is maintained between the two levels at all times (Crab Orchard Mine Technical Staff, 2017)."

Located south of downtown Seattle, the Beacon Hill Station & Tunnels is the key section of the southern segment of Sound Transit’s proposed new LINK light rail system. This paper presents an overview of the design, which includes 4,300 ft of segmentally-lined bore twin tunnels and a deep mined station. With platforms located156 feet below grade, the station itself is only the second large-scale mined station in soil the US. Its complex geometry combined with variable soil conditions—sands, silt sand clays with slickensides—challenged the designer’s to come up with a SEM-based design that addresses the owner’s risk, cost and schedule concerns.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) of the School of Mines and Energy Development (SOMED), University of Alabama conducted studies to determine the potential for upgrading the Eastern Devonian shales by flotation. Results of those studies indicate that flotation concentrates containing 150 liters of oil/t (36 gal/t) can be produced from shale containing 50 liters of oil/t (12 gal/t) as determined by Fischer Assay with good recovery of the kerogen. Organic carbon and trace elements such as molybdenum, vanadium and uranium also are concentrated with the kerogen. Kerogen concentration was found to be a function of the size of grind.

Over the last three years there has been an increase in mining congress and conferences focusing on water management. Water in mining is a key concern for mine managers and operations, and we are now seeing this operational dilemma escalated to the level it deserves. According to Frost & Sullivan research, mining water and wastewater treatment and its related technologies will be a U$3.6 Billion global market in 2016, which translates the importance of this issue. Looking at the current mining trends, some factors increased the importance of water in mining operations, including: ? Utilization of belt air in underground coal mines has been discussed extensively during the last decade. The Final Report of the Technical Study Panel on the Utilization of Belt Air and the Composition and Fire Retardant Properties of Belt Materials in Underground Coal Mining formed by the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act of 2006 recommends research on leakage, use of booster fans, and escapeway safety. This paper discusses the role of ventilation modeling in evaluating primary escapeway pressurization in a three-entry development system to improve emergency escape in a coal mine using belt air. The intake entry of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Bruceton Experimental Mine was pressurized using a 1.1-m (42-in.) diameter, 37 kW (50 hp) fan. The work details air movement in the simulated three-entry system and the resulting leakage patterns. Three mine ventilation software packages were compared to analyze their performance in predicting the airflows and leakage conditions with different fan settings. NIOSH researchers found that the measurement results correlated well with the results of modeling.

Communication about the energy problem has come at us in great profusion during the last couple of years--reports, speeches, editorials, advertisements--and events. Events such as the Arab embargo on oil exports which vividly demonstrated the world's dependence on oil, a finite and nonrenewable resource. And the three-fold increase in the price of oil which provides a constant reminder of the political and economic implications of dependence on foreign oil. A distinction among countries exists today which was almost inconsequential two years ago--the oil exporting nations and the oil consuming nations. The only rational way for the consuming countries to lessen the political and economic clout of the OPEC group is to reduce their dependence on oil. The United States is capable of playing a significant part in such a move for several reasons.

An electrostatic pseudo-liquid membrane technique, in which extraction and stripping take place simultaneously in a single reaction vessel using an electrostatic dispersion, was applied to recover Ni(II) from aqueous 0.1 kg m-3 Ni(II)(as NiSO4) – CH3COONa solutions, and the Ni(II) ions were concentrated by a factor of 9 into an aqueous 1.0 kmol m-3 HCI solution using D2EHPA as an extractant at the applied voltage of 3.7 kV for the dispersion. When the process of ESPLIM proceeds favorably, the concentration of Ni(II) in the upper part of the organic phase of the reaction vessel is lower than that in the lower part. In addition, the concentration of Ni(II) in the organic phase of the extraction chamber is higher than that in the stripping chamber. For the stable operation of this process, the stripping rate must be greater than the extraction rate to prevent the excess accumulation of Ni(II) in the organic phase which leads to the poor dispersion of the aqueous phase.

The disposal of sludges and other similar industrial wastes is a major problem. Liquid wastes from industrial operations, when treated, produce significant volumes of sludge which are difficult to dispose of, because of the chemical and physical properties of the sludge. In the mining industry sludge is produced from various water treatment operations, in particular mine drainage neutralization. Waste water from coal preparation plants also produces a sludge however the sludge is in fact a slurry containing clays, coal fines and coal impurities. In many areas the disposal of these sludges is producing a serious problem. Mine drainage sludge consists of a variety of hydrous iron oxides, usually ferric oxides, contaminated with other neutralization products such as calcium sulfate. This question and others like it have been heard over and over again by those who have tried to convince operating men that there are sound merits to installing a process control computer. At IMC we have done a great deal of thinking and talking about computer control. In the course of these discussions the operating people have asked a number of questions about computer control. These questions and our answers to them make up the main part of this article. Obviously, the answer as to whether or not to go into computer control will be an individual problem conditioned by your company's circumstances. What I hope to do here is raise some questions, give you an idea of our thinking on the subject, and lay out some general guidelines for you to consider.

I.INTRODUCTION The B E I R-III Report (NAS-1980) introduces large increases in the estimated health effects of radon as compared with previous work (NAS-1972). It is the purpose of this paper to point out some important failures of these new BEIR-III estimates, to offer a general critique of the procedures used in obtaining them, and to offer more rational estimates. In Sec. II we use the BEIR-III model to calculate the risk to non-smokers from environmental radon, and show that it predicts more than twice the total lung cancer rate actually experienced by nonsmokers. In Sec. III we review the histological evidence which shows that no more than about 10% of the lung cancers among non-smokers can be due to radiation. In Sec. IV, we discuss alternative causes of lung cancer, which further reduces the fraction that can be caused by radiation, and in Sec. V we summarize and conclude that the BEIR-III model over-estimates the lung cancer rate in nonsmokers due to environmental radon by at least a factor of 40. In Sec. VT we review the evidence on risk of radon exposure to smokers, and conclude that it is probably not more than four times the risk to non-smokers; this means that the BEIR-III model over-estimates the risk of low level radon exposure to smokers by at least a factor of 10. In Sec. VII, we consider the reasons for the large over-estimates in the BEIR-III. Report. II. BEIR-III LUNG CANCER RATES DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL RADON AND COMPARISON WITH TOTAL LUNG CANCER RATES AMONG NON-SMOKERS The BEIR-III Report gives the following estimates of the lung cancer risk from low-level radon exposure in terms of working-level-months (WLM): age 35-49, risk = 10 x 10-6 /yr-WLM 50-64, 20 >65, 50 where ages refer to age at death. For latent periods between exposure and onset of these risks it gives age 0-14, latent period = 25 years 15-34, 15-20 years (we use 17 yr) >35, 10 years where ages refer to age at exposure. This is a clear and unambiguous model which is readily usable for deriving numerical estimates. We begin by using it to calculate lung cancer rates due to environmental radon. *This is an abridged version of a paper scheduled to appear shortly in Health Physics. The first step in this process is to estimate the environmental exposures; this was done in a recent paper (Cohen-1981) which concluded that these are about 0.22 WLM/year. In Table 1, this is used to calculate the BEIR-111 predictions for radoninduced lung cancer rates in the U.S. (Col. (5)), and by combining these with population statistics, it is shown (Col.(7)), that it predicts about 24,500 fatalities per year, almost one-third of all U.S. lung cancers. The comparison between the age-specific expected rates from Col. (5) of Table 1 and observed rates among non-smokers is shown in Table 2. The recent paper by Garfinkel (1980) presents the results of a 12 year follow-up on one million Americans in a study by the American Cancer Society. The paper by Hammond (1966) gave the results of the first four years of that study. The paper by Kahn (1966) is based on the so-called "Dorn Study" of 293,000 U.S. veterans of World War II who carry government health insurance. It represents 8 and 1/2 years of follow-up. A recent update on that study (Rogot-1980) does not give absolute lung cancer rates, but the age-standardized ratio between smokers and non-smokers has remained the same which indicates that there has probably not been an important change in the rates for either. The paper by Hammond and Horn (Ha-1958) was an early study by American Cancer Society. It is immediately evident from Table 2 that the BEIR-III estimates for lung cancer induced by environmental radon exceed the [total] lung cancer rates due to [all] causes among non-smokers by about a factor of two at every age. It is only fair to point out that this does not represent a direct discrepancy with the BEIR-III Report since the latter states that its estimates for non-smokers may be too high by a factor ranging from 1 to 6, favoring a factor intermediate between these. Comparisons can also be made with total lung cancer incidence for all ages. A paper by Hammond and Seidman (Hammond-1980) gives the rate for ages above 40 to be 177 x 10-6/year for men and 124 x 10-6/year for women, whereas the rate calculated in Table 1 from BEIR-III for ages above 40 is 309 x 10-6, a factor of two higher. For all ages, the rate among women was reported as 36 x 10-6/year (Hammond 1958) as compared with 114 x 10-6/year calculated from BEIR-III in Table 1, a discrepancy of well over a factor of two. All of the data we have presented are basically from three study groups, but in all three cases the BEIR-III estimates for lung cancer induced [by environmental radon alone] are a factor of two higher than actual [tota] lung cancer rates among non-smokers. The Upper Silesian Coal Basin is located in the area of the Upper Silesian Syncline and belongs to one of the most complex tectonic units in Europe. It occupies 5,650 km2. In 2020, there were 20 hard coal mines operating in the area. Seismological research in this area consists of observation of precursors/symptoms of shock generation and understanding of their effects. Studies (Teisseyre R. 1972, Mutke G. & Stec K. 1997, Stec K. 2007, Dubiński J. & other 2010, Idziak A. 2010) of complex impacts of rock mass provided a background for determining the conditions for the formation of exploitation and regional seismic shocks. Issues related to tectonic and exploitation stresses, successive extraction of coal seams at higher depths, operation in the vicinity of fault zones, often complex geological and organic conditions result in the activation of a discontinuity surface due to stress caused by deformation of rock layers, which, as a result, causes the emergence of strong shocks above 107 J. The article was based on analyses of extraction value, high-energy shocks, both of mining and tectonic-mining (so-called regional shocks) origin, against the background of changing operating conditions, which, as a result, creates an image of periodically changing seismic activity and location of strong shocks. Observation results show that, with an increase in exploitation depth and declining extraction, the number of strong shocks caused by tectonic stress (107 - 109 J) and exploitation stress (≥105 J) has been steadily increasing over the last 25 years.

This paper describes some concepts developed in a geologic data recording system at the Victoria, Nevada breccia pipe-skarn copper mine. The recording system is not fundamentally new, but represents expansion of earlier ideas. The paper is based on the philosophy that a high quality geologic data base is necessary and that it should be complete, clear, standardized, neat, quantitative, and readily useable. It may be multi-colored or simply black and white. Graphic, descriptive and quantitative recording of data is essential. A format for core logging is presented and discussed and as well as a multiple overlay system for recording data gathered in surface mapping.

Dundee Cement Company was incorporated in 1958. The equity capital for the venture was supplied by a Swiss firm called Holderbank Financier and a group of its principals. Holderbank Financier, a holding company, is a direct outgrowth of Holderbank Cement Company, a company founded in 1912 by the father of Dr Hans Gygi who is the president of Dundee Cement Company and a member of the Board of Holderbank Financier. From one plant in 1912 located in Zurich, Switzerland, Holderbank grew to its present size of 32 plants in 17 countries, having a capacity of 90 million barrels of cement per year. Dundee Cement Company constructed its first cement plant near the little town of Dundee, Michigan. This site was selected because there is an abundance of limestone and clay of the correct chemical composition for cement manufacture and the deposit was advantageously located near the large population centers of Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, and Chicago. Construction of the 5. 5 million barrel, two kiln, plant was completed and the plant started up in the fall of 1959. After a year or two of the usual problems in a new plant and the expected difficulty of breaking into a nearly saturated market, Dundee began to prosper.

Liebherr Mining Equipment Co., of Newport News, VA and Baxter Springs, KS, introduced the T282, a new two-axle, diesel-electric, AC drive haul truck with a payload capacity of 327-t (360-st). The T282 was unveiled at a press briefing in October 1998 at the company's Baxter Springs research and development1 manufacturing facility. In addition to an increase in pay- load capacity, the truck's AC drive system has been de- signed to allow for easy configuration to a trolley-assist system with minimal additional equipment. The T282 provides fuel savings, reduced maintenance requirements, and reduced downtime and maintenance costs, providing the mine operator with increases in productivity. Basic dimensions and weight of the T282 are: ? Overall length, 14.5 m (47.5 ft). ? Overall width, 8.7 m (28.7 ft). ? Loading height, 6.5 m (21.2 ft). ? Height - body up, 13.9 m (45.9 ft). ? The increasing size of flotation cells as the use of flotation has increased is traced from the first United States application of the process in Montana in 1911 through the following eight decades, using data from the Taggart handbooks (1927) and (1945), from the SME Handbook (1984), and from recent manufacturers' catalogues and other sources for the 1980s and 1990s. With the earliest mechanical cells less than 1 m3 (359) in volume and the largest now available at 200 m3 (7,000ft3), three requirements are necessary: 1) demonstration of advantages in replacing smaller volume by larger volume cells; 2) estimating power requirements, impeller dimensions, and operating rpm by correlation equations; 3) considering effects of using larger cells, in necessarily much shorter rows, on process kinetics. The resulting seven tables that address these problems are presented, and their implications discussed.

A panel discussion on carbon-in-pulp processing of gold and silver ores was one of the highlights of the 1981 AIME Annual Meeting in Chicago. The session generated considerable interest and discussion among panelists and the audience. For those unable to attend the panel, the program was recorded and the discussion appears in this two-part report. The panel was co-chaired by Robert S. Shoemaker, vice president of San Francisco Mining Associates, and Laurence D. Hartzog, principal engineer with Bechtel Civil and Minerals Inc., San Francisco, CA. Panel members included: George Potter, consultant, Tucson, AZ; Kenneth B. Hall, metallurgical superintendent, Homestake Mining Co., Lead, SD; and Donald M. Duncan, resident manager, Pinson Mining Co., Winnemucca, NV. There have been several types of carbon-in-pulp adsorption vessels in use, such as the Dorr-type agitator, the simple propeller agitated tank, the Pachuca tank, and, lately, the draft tube-type of agitated tank. Which one of these is best and why? Potter: On the selection of the most appropriate adsorption vessel, there is a considerable difference of opinion that stems largely from the fact that every ore is different. The mesh of grind, the pulp solids, and the apparent viscosity of the pulp as caused by its clay content and chemical conditions all differ. The traditional Dorr agitator with the slow speed center sweep and either peripheral or center column air lifts has worked quite well on the finer grinds of all minus 65 and probably 70-80% minus 200 mesh. Pachuca tanks have also been successful and they may be capable of handling a coarser feed than the traditional Dorr tank. One uranium mill, for example, handles minus 28 mesh sandstone ore in a Pachuca. The most recent development and one that commands consideration is the draft tube agitator in which there is a turbine which closely fits inside a draft tube. Velocity in the tube is carefully calculated to avoid undue shear and thus abrasion of the carbon. The objective in all cases, of course, is to mix the granular carbon, which is typically 6 x 16 mesh, very gently but thoroughly in a slurry with minimum carbon abrasion. I do not know that there is one outstanding choice just yet and I have been unable so far to get information on C-I-P service for ore grinds as coarse as 35 mesh. Duncan: The major advantage of draft tube-type is the ease of startup. At the Pinson plant we installed draft tube-type agitators but it is too early to quote experience with them. We also haven't operated long enough to determine just what our carbon loss is. The advantage, of course, in the draft tube design is that it requires only about one-third the horsepower input of a conventional agitator. If it has no other advantages, it has that. Hall: The type of vessel most suitable for C-I-P adsorption depends on the type of ore treated and the prevailing operating conditions. In most cases, a deep tank with turbine-type mechanical agitator and low speed tip velocities would be satisfactory. Turbine-type impellers give a positive type of agitation which assures optimum ion contact and reduces short circuiting. Thorough aeration is possible with an air sparge properly located. A mechanical agitator can easily be started up after an outage, but it is usually necessary to drain and wash out a Dorr rake-type or Pachuca before restarting. The turbine-type impeller requires more power, but maintenance costs are negligible if rubber covered impellers are used. Carbon losses are minimal. In smaller plants, Pachuca type agitators provide adequate aeration and agitation. Bob Polak, Occidental Minerals (from the floor): Mr. Hall, you favor the mechanical-type agitator with the preface that the proper design is critical. Could you elaborate on this for us? Hall: The most important thing is low tip speed to prevent carbon attrition. I think the impeller should be sized so that you get a good sweeping action toward the bottom of the tank, across its bottom, up the sides, and back to the center. The advantage of the draft tube is that you get a more positive agitation and you probably get improved aeration too. Polak: Do you know of anyone using an upflow mechanical agitator rather than a downflow unit? Hall: I think that Bob Wilson at Custom Equipment has designed one where he has located the sparge directly beneath the impeller. The air bubbles are broken up by the impeller as the slurry passes through it. The slurry flows upward, outward, down the sides, and, again, back to the center of the tank. I don't know that any tanks of this design are in commercial use. Hans Von Michaelis, Randol International (from the floor): A question to any of the panelists on flat bottom versus conical bottom Pachucas. Hall: I would say the conical bottom would be most suitable in most cases. Some plants have experienced problems with flat bottom Pachucas in that they have a tendency to sand in on the sides of the tank so only the center of the tank is active. Duncan: With our draft tube tank we placed an inverted cone in the center of the tank bottom and blanked off the bottom comer around the circumference of the tank to facilitate movement of the pulp. Other than that, as far as conical bottom tanks are concerned, I'm generally opposed to them because of the cost and height differential. Larry Kramer, Kennecott Minerals Co. (from the floor): Mr. Duncan, you mentioned that the draft tube-type could be agitated with about one-third the horse-power applied to a conventional propellor agitated tank. I have trouble trying to pin down that kind of number. Could you give a bit of rationale as to why that mechanism has a lower horsepower requirement? Duncan: I think it has to do with the fact that below the propeller you have straightening vanes. The pulp, which is flowing vertically downward, is turned and flows upward again without any recirculation. You have an inherently less horse-power requirement in that type of tank. The one-third horsepower requirement is a number I obtained from Lightnin, which supplied us with details of the draft tube. There is probably much more recirculation with a conventional impeller type that is wasted motion. Potter: Last week I saw some agitators in South Africa with short draft tubes and actual turbine-type impellers. This plant was handling 200 kt of ore per month. The tanks were flat bottomed, and the agitation appeared to be quite satisfactory.
