An automatic microscope has been developed to .measure the size and populations of macerals and minerals in fine coal particles. Differentiations are made on the basis of reflectance. This study is concerned with the size distribution of pyrite inclusions. Most fine coal cleaning processes do not remove pyrite as completely as a straight density separation. Consideration of the pyrite size distribution is suggested as a more accurate method of predicting sulfur reduction by a cleaning process. Analyses of float-sink results and Deister Table operation in terms of pyrite particle sizes are made. Other potential applications of automatic microscopy are also discussed.

"The Port Mann Main Water Supply Tunnel project provides a critical water main crossing of the Fraser River for the owner, Greater Vancouver Water District (Metro Vancouver). The project consists of two 60-metre-deep slurry panel shafts and a 1-kilometre-long, 3.5-metre excavated diameter tunnel located near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The initial tunnel lining is a precast concrete steel fiber reinforced gasketed segmental lining. The final lining is a 2.1-metre-diameter welded steel pipe. This paper describes the challenges encountered during tunnel construction and the solutions implemented. Key challenges include earth pressure balance tunnelling at up to 6 bar pressure—the highest to date in Canada—a water-crossing without surface access for the majority of the tunnel drive, ground freezing from a river platform for a critical TBM intervention, and boring through cobbles and boulders in dense glacial till. INTRODUCTION Metro Vancouver supplies drinking water to 18 municipalities, one electoral district and one treaty first nation, serving a population of more than 2.4 million residents. Water is collected in three mountainous watersheds to the north of the Greater Vancouver area, in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. To supply the growing demands of Metro Vancouver’s customers, treated water must be conveyed across two significant water bodies: the Burrard Inlet and the Fraser River. The existing Port Mann water main is one of several key links between the watersheds north of Vancouver and the municipalities south of the Fraser River. The Port Mann Main Water Supply Tunnel (PMMWST) is the first of a series of upgrades, to increase capacity, enhance scour protection, and improve seismic resilience. The new tunnel is 3.5 metres (11.5 ft) in diameter and 1 kilometre (0.6 mi) long. When completed, it will contain a new 2.1 metre (7 ft) diameter steel water main that will help ensure the continued, reliable delivery of drinking water to these municipalities, and will more than double the capacity of the existing 1.2 metre diameter main."

Discussion of concept Breakage of rock by machine is one of the major methods of excavation. With the development of modern engineering techniques, the advantages of using this method have become even greater. Improving efficiency and reducing the cost of rock breakage is the main goal of mechanizing the rock-breaking operation. For a given stratum, the efficiency of a machine excavation depends, to a large extent, on the design and method of application of the tools used. In a planetary cutter head, the subcutter heads move like planets around the main drive shaft. The general structure of the cutter head is shown in Fig. 1. As shown in this illustration, the main drive shaft (1-1) is connected to the tie bar (1) and, thereby, to a gear (5) that meshes with a fixed-gear ring (2). The subcutter head (4) is rigidly connected to the gear (5) by the subcutter-head axis (2-2). When the main drive shaft (1-1) rotates, the subcutter head (4) rotates around the axis (2-2), under the action of the tie bar and with the help of sleeve pipe (3). At the same time, axis (2-2) also rotates around the main shaft (1-1). As shown in Fig 1, [a] is the angle between the main shaft and the subcutter-head axis. This angle determines the shape of the drilling face. If [a] equals zero, the drilling face will be a flat surface (Fig.1 (a) ), and if [a] is greater than zero, the drilling face will be a spherical surface (Fig. I (b)). For a planetary cutter head, the most important design parameter is the transmission ratio (i), which is defined as [i = (0210)1(1)] Where [(a] is the angular speed of rotation of the subcutter heads around their individual axes, and [o] is the angular speed of rotation of the subcutter-head axes around the main shaft. In Eq. (1), i is positive if the direction of rotation of a subcutter head around its axes is the same as the direction of rotation of the subcutter-head axes around the main shaft (see Fig. 1(b)). Conversely, i is negative when the two directions are opposite (see Fig. 1(a)). When i is positive, the cutters on the subcutter heads form epicycloid paths on the drilling face, as shown in Fig. 2(a). "Around Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota, the local geology includes the St. Peter Sandstone, which is easily minable and has facilitated construction of interceptor tunnels for storm water and sanitary tunnels since the 1800s. The elevation of the geologic units allowed gravity-driven flows from the downtown areas all the way to the Mississippi River. Through many years of service, some of these tunnels have experienced degradation and require maintenance. Additionally, increased stormwater surface runoff can result in internal pressurization of the tunnels, accelerating degradation. Because structural failure or collapse of any of these interceptor tunnels would create a significant repair challenge, the city of Minneapolis has been inspecting and designating tunnels in its system for periodic review and repair. One of these, the St. Mary’s/Hiawatha tunnel, was rehabilitated using a grouting program. A hydrologic model was also used to improve understanding of pressurization events during some storms, leading to construction of a near-surface pressure dissipation chamber to provide increased hydraulic capacity. BACKGROUND The St. Mary’s/Hiawatha tunnel in Minneapolis has three segments; the first two were constructed in 1942 and the third was added in 1987 (Figure 1). Segment 1 is approximately 4,700 feet in length and outlets to the Mississippi River. Segment 2 intersects Segment 1 approximately 3,500 feet upstream of the river outlet and continues for approximately 2,500 feet in a southeasterly direction. The third and newest segment is approximately 500 feet long. There are four different cross sections of tunnel along the entire system.Originally, tunnel construction often consisted of mining the St. Peter sandstone with a pressurized water lance and constructing wood lagging support (Payne, 1967). An underdrain was generally installed below the invert during construction; this resulted in localized dewatering and provided groundwater control during construction. Non-reinforced concrete liner sections were cast in place. Often void space existed between the tunnel liner and the native sandstone bedrock. These voids, particularly in the crown, prevent direct contact between the liner and the bedrock."

"In slurry balanced shield tunneling, how to ensure the safety of construction and to reduce the influence on the environment has arisen wide attention of scholars both at home and abroad. But now it is still in the stage of experience as to the instability mechanism of the slurry shield tunneling excavation and its stability analysis. Based on the large-diameter model tests and FLAC 3D, the effect of the different waterhead (non-water, 0.9m and 1.1m) on stability of excavation face of slurry balanced shield is investigated, and the stability mechanics is proposed. The results show that: waterhead heights play an important role on excavation face instability features of slurry balanced shield in sandy stratum, Regarding the different waterhead heights, the development mode of the excavation face instability features can be divided into non-water mode, lower-waterhead mode and higher-waterhead mode; soil arching is existed in the process of excavation face instability, the settlement of ground lags behind excavation face failure, the soil arching will block or eliminate the effects of ground settlement; excess pore water pressure need to be considered besides earth pressure and hydrostatic pressure when the supporting force is calculated. INTRODUCTION With the development of the society, for the cities all over the world, the exploitation of underground space has become an important measure to solve the problems about population, resources and environment and an important way to heal the city syndrome and implement the sustainable development strategy of city. Constructing shield tunnel with large diameter is the major trend for development of tunnel construction (Yin, 1999). Instability of excavation face caused by relief of shield soil stress is still one problem that needs to be solved (Xiang, 2001). How to reduce the effects of construction on surrounding environment? How to accurately determine the instability of shield excavation face and to effectively and reasonably select the supporting force? These are the crucial problems which need to be solved during shield construction."

The iron-ore underground Kiirunavaara mine (Sweden) has been seismically active since 2008. In 2021 the production is on levels 1079 and 1108 m, at the deepest. The seismic activity has changed in character over time with one step change in 2015 when the number of large (ML>2) seismic events increased, and another one when the mine experienced a seismic event with Mw 4.2 in 2020. In 2017, the mine evaluated Hydraulic Fracturing (HF) as a possible mitigation technique for larger seismic events and a one-hole trial was performed. The trial proved promising, and it was decided to go forward with a large-scale trial covering an entire production area in the mine. The large-scale trial consists of 25 fracturing holes, 50 – 100 m long, running along 500 m out of the ~4500 m long orebody and spanning between production levels 1108 m and 1252 m. The fracturing process continued for a year, resulting in ~38,000 seismic events with −3.3<ML<1.4. The breakdown pressure varied between fractures in the same hole as well as between holes in the same area. Average breakdown pressure per hole was between 12 MPa and 50 MPa. The seismic response to HF in 2021 varied greatly from hole to hole and between fractures in the same hole. The variation in response could be related to the geological conditions and the infrastructure, such as large caving ore passes. In this paper some details about the experiments and broad preliminary analysis of the effect of the HF by using seismic source parameters of the induced seismic events are presented: 1) Distribution of seismic activity, 2) the ‘equivalent’ magnitudes for each hole calculated from the cumulative seismic energy and seismic potency released during the fracturing, compared with the local geological conditions; 3) the predominant failure mechanism of the seismic events caused by HF was defined. A difference in the behaviour between larger and smaller events was noticed, as ML>0 events seem to be compression type failures and ML<0 events seem to be related to slip on pre-existing structures. No seismic events related to creation of a new fracture have been identified yet.

Although roof bolting has been a major means of strata support for nearly two decades, little attention has been directed towards the design of bolt Installations. The variables involved are interdependent and their study complex. However, some simple tests may be employed to serve as guides to the efficient design of roof bolt systems. Local conditions are continually varying and are important to pattern design. This paper discusses such considerations and suggests techniques which may be employed to effect improved roof control with bolts.

Test work conducted in the 6.4 and 10.52 m Aerofall Mills at the Iron Ore Company of Canada Carol Project showed that the conventionally used ?deflector?-type liners which form the basic principle of Aerofall Mill grinding did not necessarily provide the best grinding performance. A new design, using low profile liners incorporating radial ribs of a proper height, actually improved the mill throughput in the order of 9 to 20% without sacrificing grinding efficiency. In addition, the new design reduced liner weight and scrap losses, which resulted in a reduction of liner consumption by 25%. It provided better protection to the mill shell and reduced the overall maintenance cost for the mill

The Gross Rosebel gold deposits are located in the Guiana Shield of north central Suriname. Initial discovery of surficial gold in 1880 by local artisanal miners preceded small-scale mechanized mining from 1885 to 1939. The first systematic exploration program was carried out by Placer Development from 1974 to 1977. In May 1992 Golden Star Resources optioned the property. Initial shallow reconnaissance diamond drilling of the extensive surface geochemical anomalies intersected sporadic gold mineralization with no apparent continuity between drill sections. Successive deep augering, trenching and systematic grid drilling based on information from surface mapping allowed development of a preliminary geological model. Further drilling of specific structural-lithologic targets and more complete synthesis of geological data from the trenching and deep auger sampling added to the geological model and defined the multiple controls of gold mineralization. Carefully planned infill drilling on a tighter grid spacing resulted in progressive definition of reserves within six discrete gold deposits. In a complex geological setting, the key to success at Gross Rosebel was persistent, systematic exploration, detailed mapping, careful core logging and perceptive geological interpretation. Reserves now stand at 48.6 Mt at 1.6 glt Au, or 2.4 million ounces of gold. The purpose of this paper is to describe the progression of exploration activity that led to the definition of substantial gold reserves and to summarize the geology of the deposits.

Traditional aggregate sources, that is the riverbeds, the alluvial fans, located relatively close to the developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As the sand and gravel reserves are depleted, those production plants are unable to secure additional adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. We promote development, we promote the paving of streets, the building of houses, and industrial and commercial centers, and because of economics, we tend to favor those developments located close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors who soon become our detractors. In general, urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. The neighbors don&apos;t like the view of the pits or the quarries, they complain about the "dust", about noise, about trucking . . . in general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source.

In modeling of hindered-settling bed separators, the published separation mechanisms are based on differences of particle density and size distributions, without the details of complexity of particles-liquid interactions. A fluid dynamic model for the separator is developed using Euler-Lagrange approach of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Fluid motion is obtained from solving the movement of liquid governing equations. The damping effect on flow pat-terns caused by the movement of particles resulted in liquid-particle coupling is included in the model. Effects of particle size, and particle density compositions, feed rate, feed water flow rate, upward fluidizing water flow rate, etc., are simulated in the 2-D separation model. Flow pattern effects on the separation of fine particles in the separators with center downward-flow and side cross-flow feed systems are investigated.

Tertiary calc-alkalic to alkalic rocks of the Little Rocky Mountains in north-central Montana host low-grade heap-leachable gold-silver deposits being mined by Pegasus Gold Corporation. Total production from 1884 through 1985 is estimated at 22,625 kilograms (727,414 ounces) of gold. This includes 10,774 kilograms (346,400 ounces) recovered by Pegasus between 1980 to 1986 from 20,318,000 tonnes (22,396,000 tons) of ore grading 0.960 grams of gold per tonne (0.028 ounces per ton). Silver production during this latter period was 24,556 kilograms (789,500 ounces), but reliable silver statistics prior to 1980 are not available. Ore reserves as of January 1, 1986, were estimated to be 35,380,800 tonnes (39,000,000 tons) grading 0.720 grams per tonne (0.021 ounces per ton). Present ore production is 5,533,920 tonnes (6,100,000 tons) per year at a 0.45 to 1 waste to ore strip ratio. Current annual metal production is about 2,644 and 5,288 kilograms of gold and silver respectively (85,000 and 170,000 ounces of gold and silver respectively). The Little Rockies were formed by a calc-alkalic to alkalic magma penetrating through the Precambrian basement into the overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. This intrusive center is Dart of the Central Montana Alkalic Province, a region comprised of twelve separate intrusive centers aligned in a northeast trending belt measuring 200 by 400 kilometers (124 x 248 miles). The ore deposits are structurally controlled epithermal systems which vary from deeper narrow veins to shallow, wide, low-grade stockworks, breccias and intensely fractured "sheeted" zones. The shallow types are now being exploited. Primary mineralization consists principally of gold and silver associated with pyrite, native gold and silver, sylvanite, calaverite, and hessite. Alteration is broadly classified as weak argillic. Pyritization, kaolinization, silicification and feldspathization are the dominant forms of alteration. Fluorite is a common hydrothermal gangue mineral.

"Bumps remain a critical safety concern in underground coal mining, despite significant advancements in engineering controls. These events occur when relatively high stresses in a coal pillar in conjunction with low confinement exceed the pillar’s critical capacity, causing the pillar to rupture without warning. Floor failure often occurs and can be an indicator of bump risk, as it is strongly associated with brittle failure known as spalling under a lower confinement. Significant floor heave at a western U.S. coal mine has been observed where the pillar width in a three-entry gate road system was 53 m, while no significant floor heave was observed where the pillar width in another gate road system was 22 m. This phenomenon was widely reported in the region and at another mine in another western coal field it has been reported that larger pillars are always associated with floor heave. In this study, a spalling model based on the S-Shaped brittle failure criterion and associated with the anisotropic characteristics of the materials was used in FLAC3D. The observed floor heave phenomenon associated with the larger pillars was demonstrated using this modeling approach.INTRODUCTIONFloor failure in a coal mines often inhibits longwall mining operation, as large displacement of floor strata, known as floor heave, interferes with travel, access, ventilation, and equipment operation. Aggson (USBM 1978) investigated floor heave in West Virginia where underclay is relatively strong and high horizontal stress is present. It was reported that the failure mode is mainly by buckling rather than by plastic flow.This study was developed as part of an effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to better understand rock mass behavior in longwall coal mines in highly stressed, bump-prone ground. More specifically, this study attempts to explain through numerical models small energy releases in the form of floor heave. The authors believe that brittle rock failure is associated with both floor heave and some bump mechanisms, if not directly involved in their cause."

Metal ions, such as chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) are found as trace impurities in mineral dust. Since metal ion mediated free radical generation has been implicated in many disease processes, we carried out a detailed investigation of the metabolism of these metal ions by biological redox systems and the possible oxygenated radical generation therefrom. We found that highly reactive Cr(5+) species are generated in the reduction of Cr(6+) by NADPH-dependent glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase. The reduced metal ion species react with hydrogen peroxide, to generate hydroxyl (•OH) radicals in a continuous cycle. The enzymatic catalysis processes also involves the reduction of molecular oxygen to the superoxide [(0-1 2)] radical. Thus only a trace amount of metal ions chemisorbed on mineral dusts, such as quartz, can catalyze the generation of the highly toxic oxygenated radical species from cellular hydrogen peroxide, suggesting a new biochemical mechanism for mineral dust induced chronic lung injury.

The 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments will have a large effect on the coal-fired segment of the electric utility industry. Since electric power generation constitutes by far the largest single use for coal, this legislation has the potential to greatly affect future patterns of coal utilization in the U.S.A. The inability to depend exclusively upon low sulfur coal as an exclusive mode of compliance with New Source Performance Standards may greatly lessen projected demands for low sulfur coal by eastern utility boilers. The requirements of the legislation is discussed with particular reference to the needs of the electric generating industry, along with the technologies available for complying with the Act.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimate of the total remaining reserves of lignite in this country as of Jan. 1, 1967 was about 448 billion tons. This represents 27 percent of the total coal reserves on a tonnage basis and about 17 percent on a thermal basis. Approximately 98 percent of these reserves are in a vast lignite field located in western North Dakota and eastern Montana. This field also extends north into the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Despite these large reserves and relative ease of mining by stripping operations, lignite production historically has accounted for less than 1 percent of the national total. This is largely due to the fact that the lignite deposits are located in an area that has no large centers of population and the economical radius of transportation is limited by its relatively high moisture and low heating value. Commercial utilization of North Dakota lignite for power production became firmly established in the mid-1920&apos;s with the development of the first successful lignite-burning equipment. Most of the early lignite-fired boilers were equipped with spreader stokers, but as the size of the plants increased, pulverized-coal firing became the more popular method, and with few exceptions, the plants built during the past 15 years are pc-fired.

There are many reasons why the US mineral and primary metals industry is in its present state. Undoubtedly, a flood of imported goods in all sectors is playing a major role in the plight of our raw materials industry. Domestic industry is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of its international competitiveness. And we are beginning to wonder what is happening to our technological edge. A number of factors affect the international competitiveness. Engineers cannot do much about some of these factors - labor costs, tax policy, government relations, interest rates, dollar strength, and labor-management relations. Something can be done about technology, however. Some say technology is so easily transferable today. But I would like to believe that we have the ability to apply it better than others. Not too many years ago, "made in Japan" meant cheap and shoddy products. Today, Japan has completely changed its image. The US is beginning to feel the threat from Japan&apos;s low-cost, defect-free products with dependable delivery. With worldwide recession and the strength of the dollar, we were shocked at the sudden weakness that developed in America&apos;s industries, not only in the international market, but domestically as well. What went wrong and what can we do about it? Senior executives from 300 large American manufacturing companies were surveyed. These executives believe US companies must: • invest in more efficient plants and equipment (27%); • invest in more research and development (23%); • improve the quality of service to customers (23%); and • adopt more aggressive marketing tactics and strategies (14%). Are we not doing enough research? The US has nearly four times as many people engaged in research and spends four times as much for research as Japan (Fig. 1). There is little doubt about the excellence of the US performance in basic science as indicated by the number of Nobel prize recipients. Japan has produced only four winners since World War II. Look at technology trade of five countries (Fig. 2). Again, US performance has been remarkable. An interesting observation here, is that the United Kingdom, another country with economic woes, is also in the black, West Germany and Japan, both with trade surpluses, are net technology importers. It is apparent that the US&apos; performance in the commercialization of new knowledge is much more in question. Japan had $50 billion of trade surpluses with the US last year, which led to some friction between Washington, DC and Tokyo. Comparing the technology trade of Japan and the US in more detail, Japan imports disproportionately large amounts of technology from the US and Europe. This data is rather old, 1978, but the general trend is not too different even today. It is generally believed that scientific research leads to innovative technology, then to economic payoff. But, after seeing the current technological challenge by Japan, we are forced to change this traditional view. Investment in research may eventually lead to economic payoff, but not directly. There is a middle ground between new knowledge and its commercialization. This is an area where the Japanese have been successful. Until the 1970s, many western companies licensed patents to Japan for quick profits. But, in recent years, these companies have become more discrete about the terms of technological transfer. As a result, a number of scientists and engineers are expressing deep concern over the future of technological developments in Japan. Physical separation of bitumen from low-grade Utah tar sand deposits containing a relatively high viscosity bitumen phase (Sunnyside and Tar Sand Triangle deposits) has been accomplished by traditional size reduction and froth flotation techniques. At appropriate experimental conditions more than 90 percent of the bitumen can be recovered in a concentrate, containing more than 20 weight percent bitumen, which should be a suitable feed material for subsequent hot water or thermal processing. The efficiency of bitumen recovery depends on the extent of size reduction, promoter and dispersant addition. Rejection of greater than 60 percent of the sand at ambient temperature and ease of water removal from the concentrate make such a process strategy both energy and cost effective. The energy required to achieve effective separation by the ambient temperature process is significantly less than the energy required for the recently developed hot water process. The flotation behavior of the tar sand has been analysed with respect to flotation pH, contact angle measurements and the apparent iso- electric point of the bitumen. The best flotation response at pH 7.8 to 9.0 can be correlated with the maximum in contact angle developed between the air bubble and bitumen surface and with the apparent iso-electric point of the bitumen (-pH 8.0).

A froth flotation plant to recover by-product molybdenite must be designed specifically for the selected separation process and the type of ore being treated. However, some general rules concerning by-product molybdenite plant design can be suggested that would be valid for most processes. The term by-product molybdenite in this paper is limited to the recovery of molybdenite from copper porphyry ores, which essentially amounts to selectively separating molybdenite from copper and iron sulfide concentrates. In addition, most of the discussions would apply only to the almost universally used approach of floating the molybdenite and depressing the copper and iron sulfide minerals.
