This paper deals with the heat flow problems in deep workings (depth greater than 1000 m in France). The approach benefitted from experience gathered in France and South Africa. Deep mines are located in the East of France (coal in Lorraine and potash in Alsace), where the geothermal gradient can reach 4 'C per 100 m (Virgin Rock Temperatures, VRT, around 50 'C). This paper is concerned with the following topics: method of studying the heat flow problem on a mine-wide basis, specific models for heat and moisture pick-up, interfacing of heat and ventilation calculations and a case history in the Lorraine collieries. The heat flow problem on a mine-wide basis is studied in a fashion similar to ventilation networks. Each branch is considered as a "black box" where the air picks up heat and moisture (or is cooled, in the case of an air-cooler). Each box is therefore modeled as a heat transfer unit, hence the calculation of outlet temperatures (wet- and dry-bulb) from the intake ones. The whole network can thus be computed as a sequence of boxes from the air intakes towards the outlets. The second section reviews a number of models used for the assessment of heat and moisture pick-up in the "boxes", with emphasis on stopes and development ends, which are particular to the mining method in use. Two types of stopes are considered: longwall (horizontal and inclined) and cut-and-fill (subvertical). Mechanized rock breaking and blasting can be accounted for. A particular attention is given to development ends, especially complex from the heat flow point of view (rock characteristics, wetness factors, etc.) and usually quite hot. These workings, which are critical in order to secure new production areas, are studied on an average basis as well as in extreme conditions. The calculation takes into account the history of rock temperatures. The interaction between ventilation and thermodynamic calculations is still under development. The idea consists of coupling ventilation calculations with the "box" models: the first step determines the direction of air flow, hence the sequence of the boxes; thereafter the calculations yield the effect of temperature and presssures on air flows. The final section reports on the validation of the whole approach against field data. It concerns several heat flow surveys aimed at checking the models for shafts, stopes and development ends. The accuracy of the method is found very satisfactory.

A new explanation of the scale dependency of rock strength is presented based on the theory of extremes. A brief review of past work on specimen size and strength relationship is followed by an introduction to the fundamentals of the underlying theory of extremes and its relationship to the scale effect. It is shown that the weakest link theory is directly related to extremal statistics and that parameters of strength distributions of rock can be derived as a function of the specimen size. Three sets of Brazilian test data are used to demonstrate the use of this approach.

Historically, the development, collation, and use of this information for design have been costly and time consuming. With the application of a digital computer, however, the effort expended can be reduced and maximum effective use of the geologic information realized. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility and convenience of using a computer to Store and manipulate geologic data for use in mine and process plant design.

Research is probably the least understood and the most underrated or overrated, depending on the circumstances, function of the corporate enterprise. Some companies become engaged in research because they consider it to be vital to their very existence, others in order to develop new business, and some with no clearer objective than to keep up with the competition. Whole new industries have resulted from research activities, such as the Xerox copier, the transistor, the computer, and have affected considerably our way of life. Companies have prospered or perished by pursuing the successes or failures of their research organizations. However. despite the tremendous effect that research has had on our modern civilization and the billions which are spent on it annually, we have not as yet been able to develop many hard and fast rules as to how to conduct it effectively and to a successful end.1 This section discusses the role of research in the United States and in the mineral industry and describes a few of the criteria and guidelines which have been developed to assist in increasing the probability for success in industrial research. Broadly speaking, the purpose of industrial research is to make a significant contribution to the long-term viability and the profitability of the sponsoring company. The sum total of technological developments has been a principal factor in establishing the United States as a world leader and the controlling element in the nation's balance of trade with foreign powers. The international aspect of most mineral commodities is a significant factor in the business decision-making of most domestic mining companies and should be an important factor in the operation of research and development (R & D) programs in these companies. The National Science Board has reported that in recent yean other nations have been gaining on the United States over practically the entire range of science. 2,3 On the positive side, the NSB reported a strong position for the US in the results derived from its investment in R & D. If the United States is to maintain a favorable trade balance, it must create new know-how through technological innovation in order to create new industrial products, processes, and services for which there is a global demand. As expressed by Chauncey Starr, president of the Electric Power Research Institute, "Unlike resources found in nature, technology is a man-made resource whose abundance can be continuously increased, and whose importance in determining the world's future is also increasing."' In recent years, the greatly in- creased pressures for environmental quality and energy conservation have enhanced further the role of technical innovation in insuring the future survival of the domestic industry. Technology is the challenge of American industry, and it is a challenge which the mineral industry must also accept, for processed minerals are the very raw materials and energy on which all of industry is based, it is technology which makes a mineral deposit into an ore reserve. The Natural of Industrial R D Research is usually thought of as being either basic or applied. Basic or fundamental research is the quest for knowledge and need not have any practical objective. Applied research is the search for a solution to a particular problem and therefore has a specific objective beyond the acquisition of new knowledge. Development is the next stage to the applied research experimentation and it generally consists of larger-scale tests to establish the technical and economic feasibility of the new process or product and to provide design information for its industrial implementation. The terms research and development are usually interconnected for the good reason that in many cases it is difficult to define where one ends and the other begins. For instance, in many cases, thermodynamic, kinetic, corrosion, and other research studies, which are needed to provide design data for an industrial plant, may prod in parallel with the pilot plant activities preparatory for this plant in order to conserve time. Often the final stages of a development project may involve the trial production of a new product for markeing tests or the trial operation of a new process on a "semi-industrial" scale pilot plant. Although cyanidation has been universally applied in the processing of gold and silver ores, the search for less toxic alternatives continues. Difficulties encountered in processing ores containing oxidized copper minerals and the inherently slow kinetics of cyanidation have generated a renewed interest in thiosulfate leaching. This process, as well as the catalytic effects of copper ion, were well recognized and widely applied towards the end of the past century. In this study, the effects of copper, ammonia, and thiosulfate concentrations on gold dissolution were investigated using the rotating disk technique. Extraction of gold and silver from an oxidized copper-bearing ore was also studied utilizing a statistical experimental design, and these results were displayed in the form of contour plots.

However, in the mid 1960?s, European producers began a transition to an alkaline papermaking process. Early European mill conversions to alkaline papermaking begun in the 601s, accelerated during the 1970's influenced by the dramatically higher cost for OPEC energy as well as the high cost of fiber and imported filler clay.

The Cienega project, now under construction by Penoles group, is located in the mountains of the State of Durango, Mexico. The gold and silver deposits are found in the 4-km long system of veins, which will be extracted by underground methods. The planned 1000 tpd process plant will contain a countercurrent cyanide circuit for oxide ore and a flotation circuit for sulfide ore. Considerable resources have been devoted to development of infrastructure in the isolated location, as well as for the mitigation of environmental impacts. Startup is scheduled for the third quarter of 1994.

Much progress has been made in the application of geostatistics to hard rock ore deposits.1,2,3 4,8 Progress in the application of geostatistics to coal deposits has developed over a period of time out of hard rock technology.5,7 Exploratory drilling in many hard rock deposits is frequently significantly more productive than exploratory drilling in coal deposits. For example, hundreds of feet of drilling and/or many drill setups are frequently necessary to obtain a few samples from a typical 4 to 6 foot thick coal seam. With hard rock deposits, which are frequently thick or volumetric, less drilling dead work is involved in sampling the deposit. To produce a variogram, which is the basic element needed for geostatistical analysis, a few well positioned holes drilled into a hard rock deposit where the core(s) can be divided into many sections can produce a detailed variogram. To produce a similar type variogram in coal, it is necessary to drill many dozens of holes with much of the core length consisting of overburden data which is frequently of only secondary importance. To apply geostatistics to coal, not only are many separate sample sites needed, but frequently a problem exists in that the interval distance between samples cannot be controlled with the ease that hard rock drilling intervals can be controlled where it is only necessary to cut core segments according to some preassigned interval of distance. Because the uses of existing coal deposit samples are frequently handicapped by irregular sample distances and lack of sampling density along certain directions needed for the development of variograms, the application of geostatistics to coal deposits frequently does not proceed with the same efficiency and rapidity as when these techniques are applied to ore deposits. Grid-fitting was developed by the writers, as a logical and evolutionary improvement over the long and successful application of geostatistics to coal seams.6,9 Grid-fitting combines the trending of variance as well as other aspects of probability theory to optimize informational yields from the commonly less productive data derived from coal exploratory programs. Grid-fitting is basically a technique where a hypothesis involving numerous grid patterns, where each pattern is of a given geometry, size and direction is repeatedly matched against actual sample data to determine which match results in the closest fit of the hypothesis to the data. To determine the closest fit, a special index known as a selectivity index was developed. The selectivity index is basically the product of the mean and variance of the variances contained within each of the grids. hence, if SI is the selectivity index then [SI = Xs E (S i - Xs) /N] where [X]s is the mean of individual grid variances Si2 for any pattern of given geometry, direction and size.

The thickness of the laminated beam modeled in this study is based on bridging potential and TDR measurements. The laminated beam stiffness is based on the effective stiffness of an equivalent transformed section. The maximum deflection of this near-surface laminated beam is compared with the maximum measured surface subsidence. The spreadsheet provides a rational technique to graphically display the character of the overburden and potentially allows prediction of a subsidence factor based on boring logs and the proposed mine plan. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines (Bureau), utilizes a commercially available computer spreadsheet program in combination with a modified version of Bieniawski's Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system to characterize the geology overlying high extraction coal mines. The spreadsheet program calculates a RMR for each bed based on the lithology, thickness, and engineering properties, which are determined from boring logs and laboratory tests. Once the RMR is calculated the spreadsheet has two major functions. First, the spreadsheet calculates values used to graphically represent the character of each individual bed in the overburden. It calculates an in situ deformation modulus using an empirical rela¬tionship between the modulus and the RMR and then uses this effective modulus along with additional parameters that are based on mine geometry to calculate the bending stiffness and bridging potential for each bed. Second, the spreadsheet creates a transformed section that allows groups of beds to be modeled as an elastic beam. It then calculates a bridging potential for the entire rock mass. The bridging potential of the rock mass is a single value that takes into account both the geology of the overburden and the geometry of the mine. It seems reasonable that there would be a strong correlation between the bridging potential, the overburden response to high extraction mining, and the subsidence ratio. The results presented in this paper focus on the relationship between the bridging potential of individual beds and the deformation measured using Time Domain Reflectometry (TOR). Subsurface displacements measured over seven high extraction coal mines in southern Illinois were correlated with the bed stiffness and bridging potential profiles. Based on these correlations it was evident that the process of caving and subsidence over these high extraction mines involved momentary bridging by individual beds or groups of beds and the ultimate development of a laminated beam near the surface.

Evidence for the floatability of sulphide minerals without collector is analyzed and it is shown that results obtained with ores, in contrast to those with single minerals or mineral mixtures, depend on many additional variables, some identified and others not. Because of the prevailing low levels and costs of collectors for most sulphide ores, it is unlikely that collectorless flotation will have commercial applications, so that continued research on the subject may be justifiable on theoretical but not on practical grounds.

During April 1967 a Frasch sulfur mine was placed in operation near Fort Stockton, Pecos County, in West Texas. This was the first Frasch mine to recover native sulfur from a deposit not associated with the caprock of a salt dome. Since 1967 two additional mines have been opened in west Texas, another one near the first at Fort Stockton and a third one near Orla in Culberson County (Figure 2). Recoverable reserves at the Culberson County mine are estimated to be 57,000,000 long tons of native sulfur (Zimmerman and Thomas, 1969). Total recoverable reserves at the three mines probably exceed 60,000,000 long tons, Studies of the geochemical cycle of native sulfur mineralization in test Texas indicate an origin similar to the deposits on salt domes although the geologic framework is different. A comparison of the geologic setting of the west Texas deposits with the deposits in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as reported in the literature, reveals many similarities. Wheel loaders became important bulk materials handling tools in the early fifties. As they grew in stature, productivity, reliability, and acceptance, the demand for larger, more rugged machines evolved. In the early sixties, the introduction of a 6-yard model by a major equipment manufacturer led quickly to widespread experimenting and rapid worldwide acceptance in loading blasted rock in stone quarries and smaller metal mines. As the wheel loaders grew in popularity for shot rock loading, larger models, 12- to 15-yard size were developed and saw widespread use by 1970. In the past 20 years, at most quarries and small to medium size mines, most cable operated power shovels have been replaced by large wheel loaders and more recently, hydraulic excavators as the primary loading tool. Wheel loaders larger than the 15-yard class are not used widely. Until about 1970, very few overburden haulage trucks were used in domestic coal mines. About that time, many states started enforcing stringent mine relcamation regulations and in 1977, even more stringent federal legislation was passed. These controls brought about drastic changes in coal surface mining methods in the mountainous areas of Appalachia, in smaller midwestern mines and in the large mines of the western states. Basically, simple material casting methods were replaced at most eastern mines by "haul-back" and "mountain top mining" methods using controlled placement of overburden as it is removed from the coal. These methods dictated much more extensive use of loaders/ shovels and trucks to the point that most coal mining in those areas is now by loader/shovel trucks methods. And those areas have become the home of the country's largest population of large wheel loaders and trucks in the 35- to 85-ton size class with a trend to even larger trucks and shovels. To maintain equal production or provide for growth, the new methods have caused a sharp increase in machine intensity to the extent that at some mines, up to three times as many machines were required to mine a million tons of coal in the late seventies as compared to the machine needs in the sixties. Mining costs and coal prices also took a big jump in the mid-seventies, paralleling the drastic price increases in oil and other forms of energy.

Computer aided design and inter active graphics have been well established in the electronics, automotive and mechanical engineering industries. The use of such aids in underground mine design and planning, however, has been noticeably absent. The large expense involved in the research and development of CAD and graphics systems and their highly specialized techniques have rendered investment in these areas difficult to justify. Optimum mine planning involves an interactive procedure of evaluation of several alternative plans. Generally the development of each mine plan of a given operation can take many man-months. This time constraint on planning precludes any comparative analysis and evaluation of alternatives, thereby introducing the possibility of unrealized gains. This paper outlines the development of a computer aided mine design program utilizing interactive graphics for the design, simulation and scheduling of underground coal mines. The program developed examines exploratory borehole information and produces a structured database of the sampled data. This database is utilized to generate seam sections and different mine layouts. A simulation of mine extraction and production levels and a schedule of proposed alternatives are then performed.

The modeling and simulation of semiautogenous (SAG) mills have been widely used in the design and optimization of mill performance in terms of its power draw, processing capacity and product size distribution. The parameters in the model, such as breakage rate constant, discharge rate and appearance function, were estimated using process and design data collected from a gold mine operating in Alaska coupled with a nonlinear parameter estimation scheme. This model was then used to predict the dynamic responses of other key operational variables, such as mill power, bearing pressure, charge level and product size distribution. The transient response of mill behavior with respect to changes in feed size distribution, tonnage and mill feed water is also presented. This dynamic simulation approach can be used for practicing different control strategy and training purposes. The observed response of mentioned variables was validated using dynamic response data from the plant to encompass operational characteristics of SAG mill behavior.

The Cresson Deposit is located in central Colorado within the historic Cripple Creek Mining District. The deposit has moved from its initial discovery in 1990 to full production in less than five years (current reserve nearly two million ounces). This accomplishment required a great deal of cooperative teamwork between the exploration, development, permitting and corporate groups. Nowhere was this cooperation more evident than in the construction of the geologic block model. The detailed modeling of gold and its metallurgical characteristics formed the foundation upon which critical financial and design decisions were based.

The very high cost of exploration and development for new mines requires that a carefully planned, complete, and technically competent geotechnical evaluation be applied to the ore body and the surrounding rock. The ground conditions must be predetermined sufficiently so that, during the development and exploitation stages, unexpected conditions will be of minor consequence. Ground conditions are a major factor affecting the cost of excavated items such as shafts and inclines. For example, shafts cost less to sink in tight dry ground than in highly pervious ground below the water table, with all other factors being equal. The proper mining methods also is dependent upon the ground conditions. Bad ground for room-and-pillar mining may be ideal for caving methods; whereas, ideal ground for room-and-pillar mining would be extremely difficult for a caving operation. To do a proper engineering design, the parameters of strength, deformability, and permeability must be determined, in addition to the loads that will be applied as a result of the mining activity. The required degree of accuracy for each parameter depends upon the individual case. For example, the strength of massive rock in which openings of small cross-sectional area are to be driven at shallow depths needs to be resolved only within several thousand kilopascals (pounds per square inch). Under such conditions, the rock strength is not likely to be of great economic importance unless the rock is very weak. Large openings at great depths require a much more accurate appraisal of rock strength and deformation characteristics. Ground water conditions are important at any depth. Today, a number of techniques exist for evaluating conditions before opening up the ground for development. These techniques and their applications are described in more detail later in this text. The evaluation of ore body ground conditions should start at an early stage, as soon as the deposit has been proven viable for a mine. Economic geology investigations mainly serve to define the value and limits of the ore deposit. To do this properly, the geology of the site is determined in at least as much detail as is necessary to define the "controls" for the ore body. The ground-condition evaluation must determine the engineering properties of the ore body and the surrounding material. This includes the structural geology as it relates to rock strength; i.e., the frequency, extent, and orientation of discontinuities such as faults, joints, bedding, etc. Ground water conditions also must be determined. It is important that the detailed geology of the site be determined at an early date. Reasonable geotechnical parameters must be established during this time period, so they can be used in mining model studies that include both physical and mathematical models. The ultimate goal bf-the geotechnical evaluation is to predict the ground behavior as the excavations are made and how the ground behavior will affect the safety and economic well-being of the mine. The formulation of a ground-condition evaluation program should be planned carefully to determine the particular geotechnical parameters only in as great a detail as will have a bearing on the mine design. For instance, it is not necessary to make numerous triaxial tests in strong rock when the mining will be conducted within a few meters (feet) of the surface in a regime of gravity loading and an absence of tectonic stresses. Similarly, it is not necessary to invest large amounts of time and effort in the determination of joint strengths if the orientations of the joints are such that the failure could not occur along them. Generally, the determination of ore body ground conditions can be divided into four main steps: 1) The general and structural geology of the site must be determined; this is determined primarily during the economic evaluation. 2) The material behavior characteristics of the deposit and the vicinity must be determined. 3) The ground water hydrology of the deposit and the vicinity must be determined. 4) Miscellaneous ground support considerations must be established. Gross features are defined first, followed by a series of increasingly detailed investigations. Specifically, the geology study should start by utilizing techniques such as remote sensing, topographic map interpretation, geologic mapping, etc. After the gross features, such as major faults, have been delineated, the studies are directed toward defining the more detailed elements of jointing, rock strength, ground water hydrology, and other characteristics. This information is used to formulate an assessment of the strength of the ore body and the surrounding rock. Finally, all of the gathered information is integrated to make an assessment of the rock behavior in relation to the types of openings, the excavation methods, the support requirements, etc., that should be used for the rock conditions that are present. The mine design and the geotechnical assessment should be an iterative process. General conclusions about the rock conditions will dictate a type of mine plan. The specific mine plan then should be modified by specific geotechnical considerations. For example, an initial assessment may conclude that the ore body is strong and that a strong rock unit is present over the ore body. Thus, one definite possibility is to mine the deposit by room-and-pillar methods. However, subsequent investigations may reveal faults through the deposit, requiring relocation of the mine openings so that pillars and other structures are in sound rock. In other words, the final mine plan should be compatible with the geotechnical aspects of the ore body.

Kuroko deposit is a stratabound massive sulphide and sulphate deposit associated with Miocene submarine volcanics and has been considered to be a prototype of meta- morphosed Palaeozoic and Precambrian equivalents. Since the discovery of Uchinotai deposit of the Kosaka mine in 1959, Dowa and other mining companies have conducted intensive exploration work in the Hokuroku district of northeastern Japan. Dowa has been placing its first priority on the exploration of Kuroko deposits and made a series of remarkable successes in finding the Kuroko deposits, i.e. Uchinotai, 1959; Matsumine, 1963; Uwamiki, 1966; Fukazawa, 1969 and Ezuri, 1975. It is emphasized that our successes have resulted from the proper application of exploration technologies accumulated through our experiences. Firstly we defined the Kuroko horizon and favourable felsic volcanism based on the detailed structural and volczno-stratigraphic study of the Hokuroku district, and then delineated the promising areas by means of the quantitative evaluation of geophysical, geochemical and mineralogical parameters such as the magnetic susceptibility and contents of alkaline and alkaline earth metals in the foot wall dacites and clay mineral assemblages of both hanging and foot wall pyroclastics and dacites. Practical application of these techniques is essential to our routine Kuroko exploration.

The main problem in geochemical exploration for gold ore bodies in the 40 km2 hydrothermally altered area at Goldfield is to decide which of the many silicified ledges exposed are most likely to yield deposits with additional subsurface exploration. We conclude that the most efficient way to search for exploration targets is to collect rock samples from the ledges and analyze for the following elements in decreasing order of priority: gold, lead and silver, bismuth, and mercury. These elements form relict hypogene aureoles restricted to the ledges and are not appreciably redistributed during supergene leaching.

The by-product molybdenite technology in Chile is reviewed. Flowsheets, reagents and some operation features for the actual six Chilean moly plants(Chuquicamata, El Teniente, El Salvador, Andina, Las Tortolas and Pelambres), are presented. The chemical and physicochemical factors involved in the depression of copper and iron sulfides during the selective flotation of molybdenite, with sodium sulfide, sodium sulfhydrate, anamol-D and LR-744, are discussed. Advances in technology to solve problems of excess of lime (precipitation with sulfuric acid); excess of residual flotation reagents (activated carbon and kerosene); and optimization of depressant consumption (Eh control, nitrogen and low-oxygen air), are discussed.
