The non-isothermal magnetization roasting process and isothermal magnetization roasting process of siderite ore were investigated using thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and a real-time infrared gas analyzer. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to analyze the characteristics of samples. The results showed that the decomposition degree and decomposition rate of siderite ore were vitally affected by heating rate and roasting temperature. It was determined that A1 reaction model (f(α) = 1 − α) and A3/2 reaction model (f(α) = (3/2)(1 − α)[−ln(1 − α)]1/2) were the most probable mechanism function of the non-isothermal decomposition process and isothermal decomposition process, respectively. The phase transformation and decomposition mechanism during the roasting process were evaluated. Siderite decomposed in the process of magnetization roasting, released CO and CO2, and transformed into strongly magnetic magnetite. The SEM images highlighted that as the decomposition progressed, the structure of roasted samples was destroyed, and an increasing number of cracks and pores emerged on the surface, which is advantageous to the following grinding process.

Identifying high value areas of unmined coal when large quantities of coal are available relative to annual markets is difficult because of the uncertainty of when the coal is to be mined. A GIS based methodology developed to value reserve coal in a producing coal region for the purpose of ad valorem taxation also identifies high value areas for mining investment. The methodology is unique in that it accounts for most mining, environmental, and market factors to determine when specific properties are to be mined. The methodology and data base are useful for directing regional exploration and acquisition activities toward most favorable areas.

"TBM cutter life evaluation in abrasive granitic rocks is a very important issue, especially in pressurized face tunneling with mixshield TBM for which the planning of costly interventions becomes crucial. This paper presents an overview of methodologies for cutter life evaluation in rock. A comparative study is performed to indicate the predictability of cutter life evaluation methods based on detail data from the NS3 tunnel project in Singapore. A new model is developed based upon the cutter wear information of eight TBM tunnels from around the world. New methods are proposed to evaluate the optimum intervention interval length and the number of worn-out disc cutters for a tunnel project. Finally, two new laboratory tests in the evaluation of disc cutter abrasion, including a full-scale and a small-scale test, are introduced, and their test results are discussed. INTRODUCTION The issue of wear evaluation for hard rocks has been extensively studied in drilling and pavement industry. In this regard, several tests and evaluation methods have been proposed to estimate or evaluate the state of tool life (e.g. bit life for drilling). In the case of TBM tunneling, tool wear may depend on several factors such as mineral composition, strength, or type of cutting, but as the abrasion is usually the major mechanism for the tool wear in hard rock, the developed methods for cutter wear or cutter life evaluation are mostly based on the abrasion indices such as Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI). This paper attempts to review the major methodologies for disc cutter wear and life evaluation and to propose new methods to evaluate cutter life and intervention interval evaluation based on detail information of a mixshield tunnel project in Singapore as well as general information of some other projects from Iran, Italy, South Africa, and France. As the laboratory tests are crucial in the process of evaluation, two new lab tests are developed and used to inspect suitability of the new proposed model for disc cutter wear evaluation."

"In recent years, use of mineral processing tailings as a paste backfill has been significantly increased due to the environmental problems occurred during the disposal of the tailings in mine area. The paste material used to fill the stopes excavated is generally consisted of tailings (solid ratio: 70–85%) and cement (3-7%w/w). Meanwhile, the strength of the paste material is completely related to ratios of these materials. Cemented Paste Backfill (CPB) system is used as support depending on the roof pressure and also as an underground disposal method. Therefore, temporary strength value of the paste material gains a great importance. For example, the paste backfill material must compensate the minimum 4 MPa strength value in order to procure the permanent fortification, and the mixture cost must be minimal as well. For this reason, in this study, the Pb-Zn tailings were used to prepare for the paste backfill material using cement in order to perform the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests. Additionally, a statistical experimental design and linear programming techniques was used to find the optimum mixture in terms of strength and cost. The pulp solid ratios (PSR) of the tailings and cement (by the solid) were varied as 75-85% and 3-8%, respectively. The results of this study; the optimum mixture is ~79.5%PSR and 6.8% cement ratio (by the solid) for 4 MPa UCS (28 day) and 16-17 cm slump value determined by this method with statistically reviewed experimental data. INTRODUCTION Fine-grained tailing waste materials resulting from mining activities are an important environmental problem. In terms of environmental protection, the use of tailings with paste backfill is a very attractive approach and a desirable solution to tailings management. Paste backfill, which is used to fill underground openings, is made by primarly mine tailings mixed with hydraulic binders and water. Its main benefits are not only disposal of mine tailings in underground, but also providing a certain strength to ensure a safe working environment. Therefore, it is necessary to use hydraulic binders due to durability of the system (Benzaazoua et al., 2004). Paste backfill, formed from the mix of dewatered plant tailings (75-85 wt. % solids), water and binder (3-8 wt. %) (Brackebusch, 1994; Landriault et al., 2005).Water is used to determine the chemical reactions between tailing and binder materials for strength as well as increasing pumpability. Portland cement and ash can be used as binder materials (Douglas and Malhotra, 1987). The factors which affect strength and stability of paste backfill separate into two groups called interior and exterior factors. Interior and exterior factors determine the strength, stability and deformation features of backfill in short and long terms and also affect the transportation of backfill to underground (Benzaazoua et al., 2004; Erçikdi et al., 2006; Yilmaz et al., 2010; Nasir and Fall, 2010). Material properties of tailings as well as site operations to fill the underground openings are the most important steps for the design purposes. Grain size distribution, chemical, and physical properties of tailings, and mechanical properties of paste fill material are used to understand the suitability of tailings as paste fill material (Ozturk et al., 2014). Many large. low-grade (refractory) sulfide gold resources exist in Nevada and other parts of the world that are not amenable to concentration by conventional flotation practice, Over the past several years Santa Fe Pacific Gold (SFPG) has investigated flotation process options to economically treat low-grade refractory resources of this type at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks. Conventional flotation technology applied to the original high-grade gold resources at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks was initially unsuccessful. Review and analysis of auriferous (gold-bearing) iron sulfide mineralogical characteristics and flotation chemistry provided a fundamental understanding that led to the development of a new flotation process that SFPG refers to as N2TEC. This paper discusses the development of this technology and compares N2 TEC results with conventional flotation practice.

Over 2 million tons of steel furnace dusts are produced each year in the United States. Recycling of these dusts rather than disposal would conserve mineral resources, reduce land requirements for disposal, and decrease pollution. In addition to the iron content, the dusts contain appreciable amounts of zinc and lead. Removal of lead and zinc with simultaneous reduction of Iron oxide has been achieved by inert atmosphere roasting of carbon-containing pellets prepared from steel furnace wastes. High- and low-carbon wastes were blended to obtain mixtures with sufficient carbon to serve as a reductant during subsequent roasting. The mixtures were pelletized with the addition of bentonite and water, and the dried pellets were roasted in a stream of nitrogen at temperatures ranging from 900" to 1,150° C. Zinc and lead contents were reduced to the 0.1 percent level or less by roasting mixtures containing as little as 7 percent carbon for 1 hour at 1,100° C. ton metallization increases with available carbon content; 50 percent metallization is achieved with 7 percent carbon, 85 percent metallization with 12.5 percent carbon, and over 95 percent metallization when the pelletized mixtures contained in excess of 20 percent carbon.

A major limitation in developing successful selective flocculation schemes is the difficulty encountered in adsorbing the polymeric flocculant only on the desired substrate. In this paper a correlation between selectivity of flocculant adsorption and separation efficiency is outlined and a potential technique to achieve selective adsorption of flocculants is discussed.

This paper presents some of the results of a research on long-term subsidence over and near the chain pillar systems -the area available to long-term subsidence in longwall operations. Although the long-term subsidence in most longwall operation is insignificant, it does exist in some cases. For the cases where long-term subsidence is significant, it has been found that the development process can be expressed by an exponential decaying function. The stability factor of the chain pillar system and the potential for long-term subsidence are the two important factors that control the magnitude and development characteristics of the long-term subsidence process.

The evaporite deposit at Searles Lake consists of alternating brine-saturated saline beds and saline-bearing mud beds. Three major subsurface brine-saturated saline horizons have been identified by private companies and the U.S. Geological Survey. They have been termed, from bottom to top, the Mixed Layer, Lower Salt, and Upper Salt. The important water-soluble components (Na, K, Mg, CO3, HCO3 , SO4, Cl, and B407) are either in brines or have combined to form the following minerals: halite, hanksite, trona, nahcolite, burkeite, borax, thenardite, northupite, sulfohalite, glaserite, etc. Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp., the current operator at the lake, selectively pumps interstitial brines from each of the major horizons to feed its three chemical plants. As the pumping continues, brines are continuously replenished within the deposit by dissolution of the minerals through natural recharge or artificial fluid injection (solution mining). The brines are processed to produce a variety of chemical products, which include sodium carbonate and sulfate, potassium chloride and sulfate, sodium borate, and boric acid. The Anaconda Minerals Co. has been evalua¬ting potential domestic trona acquisition since 1981. We have evaluated various properties in the Green River, Wyoming trona district, and Owens Lake and Searles Lake in southern California. In 1983, we purchased with our joint-venture partner, Leslie Salt Co., the southern portion of Searles Lake from Occidental Petroleum Corp. Since mid-1983, Anaconda has been conduct¬ing a small exploration-drilling program at the property. The initial core holes were drilled along and adjacent to the existing access road. In 1984 we used an all-terrain drill rig to gain access to drill sites on the playa where no roads exist. The use of this equipment proved to be highly successful. The drill program consists of coring to an average depth of 450 feet and collecting brine samples from potentially commercial horizons. The brine samples are collected by setting a packer and swabbing the hole. The core is logged and split lengthwise; one-half is submitted to our Tucson Geoanalytical Laboratory for semi-quantitative mineralogy by X-ray diffraction and the following suite of chemical analyses: Na, K, Mg, C03, HCO3, SO4, Cl, B407, Li, H20 insolubles, and acid insolubles. Additional test work for selected core samples will include effective porosity and horizontal permeability determinations. The brine samples are subjected to the same suite of chemical analyses (minus insolubles) as the core samples. In addition, specific gravity is also determined. Both cross sections and isopach maps are being constructed. The hydrological characteristics of the potentially commercial horizons are also being investigated.

The authors have previously described a method of enhancing the magnetic susceptibility of pyrite by a mild alkaline oxidative pressure leach (Hall et al, 1985). This finding was successfully applied to enhance the magnetic desulfurization of an Eastern Canadian coal (Hall and Finch, 1984). This paper reports on enhancement of the magnetic susceptibilities of iron-containing sulfides (arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and marcasite) upon similar treatment. It also explores the application of this pretreatment in the magnetic separation of fine sulfides from oxides and other sulfide minerals. In the latter case galvanic interference effects have a serious impact on the potential use of this method.

An MPSI KW-20 Tower mill has been tested at the Butte Molybdenum plant of Anaconda Minerals Company, as a substitute for the conventional 1.5x3.0 m (5x10 ft) tumbling ball mill currently used for regrind purposes. The Tower mill was operated in both open and closed continuous circuits. These results were complemented with a series of batch grinding tests to determine some of the operational features of this mill. The relative grinding efficiency of the Tower mill with respect to the tumbling ball mill was determined and the applicability of this new mill to a plant/heavy duty environment was assessed. Experimental results obtained on the regrind of moly concentrates indicate that approximately 40% energy savings can be realized by using the Tower mill instead of the ball mill.

The microtunneling project for the State of Hawaii's Natural Energy Laboratory (NELH) facility in Kona, Hawaii, was awarded to Nova Group Inc., Napa, California. Nova has developed both microtunnel and deep pile cofferdam experience. Both of which would be required for this project. The project was designed by Makai Ocean Engineering of Honolulu as a continuation of the Ocean Thermal Energy Project (OTEC). The world's first OTEC plant has been successfully operational at NELH since 1982 netting approx 50 kw of usable electric power from a gross generation of 210 kw. A second plant designed to draw 39°F cold water from 3,000 ft below sea level and produce a gross output of 1 mw with a net 500 kw of usable power required 2 - 54 in. finished diameter pipelines. An ongoing problem with earlier offshore pipelines has been the damage to the near-shore pipes within the surf zone. The necessity for a deeper connection between the land based pipe and submerged sea pipeline was obvious. Earlier pipelines had been drilled and shot through the shoreline. This process was only practical at shallow depths. Makai Ocean Engineering and the NELH scientists looked at different methods to get the pipeline through the shoreline at a depth of 80 ft below sea level. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines investigated solvent extraction methods for recovering gallium from filtrates produced from sulfuric acid leaching of hydrometallurgical zinc residues. These filtrates typically had pH values of 0 to 0.5, too high an acid content for effective gallium recovery by traditional extractants. Of the nine extractants studied in batch tests, 0.3M octyl phenyl acid phosphate (OPAP) in a kerosene diluent was the most effective extractant for gallium recovery, extracting up to 99.9 pct of the gallium. This high extraction was possible when the iron in solution was maintained in the reduced ferrous state. Batch tests also showed that a 1.5M-H2SO4 strip liquor recovered 98 pct of the gallium from the loaded OPAP. A continuous solvent extraction system was designed and operated based on McCabe-Thiele analyses of equilibrium loading and stripping isotherms. When 12 L of leach filtrate containing 0.32 giL Ga and 20 giL Fe were pumped through the system in 32 hr, results showed that 95 pct of the gallium was extracted in four stages at an A:O ratio of 1:1. Stripping the loaded solvent with a 1.5M-H2S04 liquor recovered 94 pct of the gallium in four stages at an A:O ratio of 1:4. A two-stage, 50-pct-phosphoric acid strip successfully removed ferric iron from the OPAP, allowing high gallium extractions to be maintained.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted a study to identify the sources of respirable dust and appropriate dust controls applicable to today's high tonnage longwall faces. The primary source of respirable dust identified is the cutting action of the shearer; however, the pct contribution of dust from coal transport through the stageloader/crusher was significant. This was primarily due to the high rate of mining, requiring rapid and constant coal transport. Techniques implemented for the control of shearer-generated dust included high drum water flow rates, deep cutting, shearer-clearer-type external water spray systems, and radio-remote control. The high water flow rates, and an enclosed stageloader with scrubber, were used to control dust during coal transport. No novel or effective control technology exists to control dust during support advance. Administrative controls for dust avoidance, and manual and batch-activated electro-hydraulic control systems were used to keep support movers out of the dust generated during support advance.

Eveleth taconite company was formed in 1963 to mine and beneficiate taconite on the Mesabi range of Minnesota. Its thunderbird mine is located midway between the cities of Eveleth and Virginia, Minnesota, and the crude ore is transported by rail to its Fairlane plant approximately ten miles to the south of the mine, "figure 1". As is implied by the names of the mine and plant, the ford motor company is the principal owner of Eveleth taconite company, with an 85% interest, Oglebay Norton company holds the remaining 15% interest and also is the managing agent.

In 1991, environmental issues related to coal mining continued to be an integral part of managing a cost-effective operation. Environmental regulations and their implementation can create considerable cost burdens on operating mines. Environmental responsibilities require management decisions to be made on a whole systems approach that is comprehensive in costs and consequences. Most of the regulatory activity in 1991 that affected coal was related to reauthorization or revision of several pieces of legislation. Issues related to the reauthorization of the Clean Water Act, the Resource Recovery and Conservation Act (RCRA) and Abandoned Mine Land. Clear Water Act considerations will encompass discharge standards, wetlands issues and proposals to regulate ground water quality at the federal level. Discussion regarding RCRA includes efforts to expand regulatory authority into the area of coal mine waste. That is currently regulated by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM). Another RCRA consideration will be the disposal of coal combustion byproducts. Abandoned Mine Land reauthorization continues the Abandoned Mine Land tax on coal operators. This tax has been in effect since 1977. Regulatory revisions were also proposed by the Department of Interior on valid existing rights, subsidence, federal coal leasing programs and OSM's troubled Applicant Violator System. Industry officials have been critical of the revisions. A federal appeals court found that evidence supported claims by Whitney Benefits, Inc. that the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) deprived the owner of full economic use of its property. Before SMCRA's passage, Whitney established an operating agreement with Peter Kiewit Sons Co. to mine coal.

The United States is the world's leading producer of phosphate rock. In 1975 according to the U. S. Bureau of Mines' statistics, 44.3 million tonnes (48.8 million short tons) of phosphate rock were produced in the United States', which is 40.6 percent of the world's production2. The major phosphate producing areas of the United States are located in Figure 1 and the production for 1975 is listed as follows: Million Million Short Tonnes Tons Florida and North Carolina 36.9 40.7 Western States 5.3 5.8 Tennessee 2.1 2.3 All of these areas produce phosphate from deposits which are sedimentary marine in origin. Occurrences of phosphate exist throughout the United States in numerous locations that are of both igneous and sedimentary origins. However, these other phosphate occurrences vary greatly in extent and economic significance. The IOC Mining and Operations Departments expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1.0 m x 1.0 m x 1.0 m; 39 inches x 39 inches x 39 inches) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment, and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine and to date has significantly improved upon baseline measures. One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduces the infiltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rockmass. Reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muckpiles has been a result. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realized. To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used a of first-of-kind technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A Digital Vision System (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with GPS locations. A large population of digital images were analysed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

In 1986, a subsidiary of Echo Bay Mines Ltd. purchased the McCoy property, 55 km (35 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV. Echo Bay then launched a two-year, $1 15-mil lion capital program to build a mill to extract gold and silver from high-grade ore mined in two open pits - the original McCoy pit and a more recent discovery, the Cove. Engineering on a new mill began in 1987 with the facility coming on line in 1989. It was comprised of a semiautogenous (SAG) mill and ball mill grinding, leaching, flotation, counter current decantation (CCD) and Merrill-Crowe processes. The mill started up on McCoy ore, a rocky material that settled very well in the new CCD thickener system. Production levels were maintained at about 7.2 kt/d (8000 stpd). The situation changed as the McCoy ore played out and increasing amounts of material from the Cove pit-with its oxide, sulfide and carbonaceous ore - were fed to the mill. The problem was the high clay content of the Cove ore. The new ore immediately created production problems, mainly loss of control on the CCD thickeners. With the McCoy pit slated to be shut down in early 1991, it was essential to find a way to efficiently process the Cove ore. Initially, the only way to regain control of the thickeners was to slow down the processing rate and increase flocculant usage, thereby getting the solids to settle in the thickeners. But this had its cost. Production dropped to about 5.9 kt/d (6500 stpd), additional operators were needed and flocculant costs, on occasion, would reach an unacceptable $80,000 per month.
