Spalding DeDecker Associates, Inc. (SDA) designed a tunnel project that fulfilled the Sustainability Objectives of Social Equity, Environment, and Economics. The project translated the principles of Sustainable Development into actions that lessened the impacts of construction on environment, lives of residents, businesses, traffic, and other social systems (i.e., shopping, recreational, and educational). The project involved the construction of a 16,108 feet of 84 inch diameter sanitary sewer interceptor by tunneling 40 feet beneath the ground surface through difficult geological and hydrogeological settings. An effective public information and stakeholders relationship program was developed to achieve the stated objectives of sustainability.

To maintain good condition of ventilation for both safety and economy, many regulators are installed in a network. In case the open state of a regulator is different from the set point, identification of a broken regulator and a countermeasure to recover airflow distribution in a network must be initiated as soon as possible. An experienced mining engineer can sense a deviation from ordinary airflow quantity. In this paper, a new system to monitor all the regulators in a network is introduced. The basic concept of the system is utilization of both human sensing of airflow rate and computer simulation to understand the macroscopic characteristics of a ventilation network. A fuzzy pattern distinction method is used to process human determination of airflow rate that may be ambiguous. The applicability of the system is demonstrated using the ventilation network of the Horonai coal mine, Japan. In particular, it is shown that the system can identify the regulator to be repaired from information supplied by workers relating to air- flow in a few sensor branches.

The success of any industrial mineral project requires an accurate forecast of the demand fir the material as well as accurate projections of costs and prices. This paper develops a general method of predicting mineral requirements and applies it to the case of graphite. The basic method is to explain graphite consumption in each of its major uses by the output and manufacturing technology of the using industry. Once these underlying factors are determined, they can he projected to establish future requirements. This forecast is critical to the evaluation of a new source of supply, such as the graphite resources of Upper Michigan.

As indicated on the official conference program, this presentation in not a formal one, but a synopsis of the activities of a newly created Sub-committee of the Research Council on Underground Construction, which involves itself with small diameter tunnels. Because there is a dire need to develop a system of excavating small horizontal openings at shallow depths without interrupting traffic, it was hoped that a more progress report could be reported at this time. Because of ecological and environmental considerations, laws are being passed which mandate that all utilities be placed underground. In urban areas the excavation of trenches in which these utilities are placed has been done by disrupting the normal flow of traffic, thereby creating complete chaos. In addition, it always seems that the Companies involved have no coordination, since one company completes its installation and another one begins. Certainly, utility tunnels can be driven at greater depths to house main feeder and trunk lines, but there still remains the problem of installing distribution lines for house services. The definition of a "mini" tunnel, is a tunnel whose excavated size is approximately 48 in. or less. The objectives of the Committee are to "stimulate the development of systems and equipment to build tunnels in these size ranges which will reduce costs, time and surface disruption from current systems."

Almost all of the world?s zirconium is mined in the form of zircon (ZrSiO4), the majority as a coproduct of titanium mining from heavy mineral sands deposits. These are placer type deposits, in which the dominant mineral is silica but which also contain a suite of ?valuable minerals,? often consisting of a mixture of titanium minerals, various alumino-silicates and zircon plus a range of other mineral species. The composition of the valuable minerals in such deposits is known as the mineral assemblage. There is no reasonable consistent geological relationship between zircon and titanium minerals. They can derive from separate igneous rock deposits that rarely occur together. The connection emanates once these separate rocks have been eroded by weather and water, often across a very long geological period. Once this has happened, zircon and titanium minerals often find their way to the same locations because they share two major characteristics:

INTRODUCTION In the USA regulatory agencies have adopted standards which limit the allowable concentration of ore dust in underground uranium mines. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists has recommended a threshold limit value for silica which has been incorporated by reference in federal regulations (30 CFR 57, 1980). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) imposes a limit for unprocessed uranium ore dust for reducing the exposure to radioactive materials from inhalation (10 CFR 20, 1980). We have been unable to trace the origin of the NRC standard. Recently the ICRP has published recommendations concerning limits for intakes of radionuclides by workers (ICRP, 1979). We have used the ICRP methodology to compute the dose equivalent commitment to lung and bone from inhalation of insoluble ore dust particles. These values were used to derive air concentrations which would provide an acceptable risk for induction of cancer from occupational exposure. Results indicate that the new ICRP recommendations are more restrictive than the present NRC standard for radioactivity. The maximum allowable dust load in a uranium mine will depend on both the concentration of silica (% Si02) and the amount of radioactivity (% U308). We have combined these standards assuming complete independence of biological hazard to establish boundary conditions for which either silica or radioactivity is the dominating factor. Based on these results we present suggestions for analysis of ore dust to insure compliance with regulatory agencies. SILICA STANDARDS Silicosis, fibrotic lung disease produced by crystalline silica, was one of the earliest forms of occupational disease to be recognized. The pulmonary lesions caused by silica, silicotic nodules, consist of concentrically arranged bundles of collagen fibers. Fusion of these nodules results in progressive massive fibrosis causing alveolar changes which decrease ventillation and blood flow in the lungs. The current Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for mineral dusts is based on the concentration of free silica. The standard is expressed in three forms: (1) Particle count standard: TLV (mppcf) = 300/(% Si02 + 10) (mppcf = million particles per cubic foot) (2) Respirable dust mass standard: TLV (mg/m3 ) = 10/(% respirable Si02 + 2) (3) Total dust standard: TLV (mg/m3 ) = 30/(% Si02 + 3) The most commonly used form is the respirable mass standard. These curent values for silica are based primarily on epidemilogical studies of Vermont granite workers and other occupationally exposed workers. In the Vermont study no cases of silicosis were seen in individuals employed after dust control measures were initiated and whose subsequent exposure averaged less than 5 mppcf. The free silica concentration in the airborne dust to which these workers were exposed averaged 25%. A concentration of 10 mppcf of granite dust is considered equivalent to 0.1 mg/m3 quartz. The current respirable mass standard allows a maximum silica concentration of 0.1 mg/m3. NIOSH (1974) has recommended a reduction in the current TLV for respirable silica to 0.05 mg/m3 Si02. As with radiation standards, the TLV for mineral dusts is an upper limit for time weighted average exposure. It is recommended that dust concentrations be maintained as far below the TLV as current practices permit. RADIATION STANDARDS The present concentration limit for airborne natural uranium in ore dust prior to chemical separation is 75 µg of uranium per m3 of air ( 10 CFR 20, 1980) . This corresponds to 1.85 Bq/m3 (50 pCi/m3 ) of natural uranium, U-238, U-235 and U-234 and is equivalent to 3.7 Bq/m3 (100 pCi/m3 ) of gross alpha activity with radioactive equilibrium between the long-lived alpha progeny through Ra-226. The origin or basis for this standard is not known, but it presumably includes both chemical toxicity and risk from somatic radiation injury. Recently the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1977) has published recommendations concerning the objectives and criteria for limiting radiation exposures. This was followed b y a revision of the limits for intake of radionuclides by workers (ICRP, 1979; ICRP, 1980). The previous compilation of limits for internal emitters was published by ICRP Committee II in 1959 (ICRP, 1959). "Understanding ground control problems continues to remain a focus of the mining engineering community. To aid mine operators and engineers in identifying and responding to ground control issues, the Ground Observation System (GOS) is being developed. The GOS is an integrated, web-based graphical user interface that displays ground response data collected wirelessly from an underground mine. It presents data in an intuitive manner to assist mine personnel, who are on- or off-site, in quickly identifying hazardous areas. Geotechnical instrumentation will be connected to wireless transmitters that will relay data in real-time to a surface computer that stores the information in a database. The GOS website will then display the geotechnical data in graphical and tabular forms, as well as in conditionally formatted mine maps. Data from each measurement device will be able to be viewed in its entirety or within a time interval, and can be downloaded for further analysis. The ability of the GOS to quickly interpret and communicate mine hazards to personnel of varying technical ability should prove to be a useful tool in understanding ground control and thus improving mine safety.INTRODUCTION Computer-based data information centers that convey operating parameters and conditions are prevalent in modern underground mines. Today’s systems are popular in showing ventilation controls and monitoring equipment performance (Jyothi & Meena 2013). In ground control monitoring, Conover, Ross, and Bigby, 2010 have installed a wired telltale roof monitoring system that sends roof displacement data every ten minutes to a computer on the surface. The computer receives, stores, and displays the data in real time. Data can also be viewed remotely through a password protected internet connection. Additionally, an internet connection allowed for remote updates to the system which streamlined software development and maintenance by eliminating travel (Conover et al., 2010). Currently, no such system beyond Conover et al.’s design has been accomplished. The Ground Observation System (GOS) is being developed to fill the void of real-time geotechnical monitoring in underground mines. A wide array of data will be transmitted wirelessly and broadcasted to on- and off-site mine personnel through the internet. The GOS will incorporate geotechnical data from roof deformation, borehole scratch testing, photogrammetry, and seismic monitoring into one interface, all while achieving permissibility for the use in gaseous mines. As a result, a comprehensive view of rock movement due to mining will be available. The overall purpose of the GOS is to deliver warnings; to ensure reliable data is relayed to personnel for the identification of potential ground failures, provide mine engineers information to design more stable mines, and assist with further geotechnical research."

Since Campbell Mine began processing ore, there has been a gravity gold recovery circuit. From 1947 to 1982, gravity gold was concentrated through the combination of jigs and mercury amalgamation. In 1982, jigs with concentrating table upgrading commenced and was utilized until the end of 1994. As of January of 1995 to the present, Knelson Concentrators in com­bination with concentrating tables have been employed to achieve a refinable product. An evaluation of the justification used for the last change is the focus of this paper.

Advances in borehole geophysical research for mineral assaying, and remote detection of mineralization away from the borehole. Nuclear activation measurement research has provided accurate in situ assays of economic metals with neutron-gamma activation, using a high resolution intrinsic-germanium detector. Although nuclear activation analysis is the present "best-hope" for obtaining in situ assays for some elements, gamma-gamma and magnetic susceptibility measurements can provide accurate assays for lead-zinc and magnetite, respectively. Borehole optical spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescence are being investigated as possible in situ assaying techniques for some minerals. More laboratory and field calibration research is needed before nonlinear complex resistivity (NLCR) can be routinely used as a quantitative assaying tool. Field tests have shown that variations in the local geologic environment can affect the quantitative accuracy of assay values from downhole NLCR measurements. Deeply penetrating borehole geophysical methods are increasingly being used for mineral exploration as drilling costs and exploration have increased. Borehole electrical measurements have been shown to be useful for detecting conductive orebodies that are not interesected by a drillhole. Hole-to-surface resistivity, and surface-to-hole time-domain electromagnetics are demonstrated to be particularly effective for defining mineralized zones in a massive sulfide environment. Borehole gravity meters and three-component magnetometers have been developed and should prove useful for defining geologic anomalies away from the drillhole.

Zinc-lead ores of the Pine Point District, Northwest Territories, Canada, are hosted in paleokarst cavities within a Middle Devonian carbonate barrier complex. Of the nearly 100 deposits found, most are irregularly distributed along two main regional stratigraphically controlled trends. The ores, which occur predominantly as open space filling, form deposits most of which average one million tonnes in size with an average grade of 10% combined zinc plus lead. Geological features related to karsting control not only distribution of deposits but also their shape, size and grade. The higher grade ore in these deposits generally occurs in a relatively small core area. Consequently, accuracy of reserve estimation is dependent on drill-hole density and understanding of karst geometry. Several case examples will be reviewed to demonstrate the relationship between shape, size and grade of deposit, geological reserves and drill-hole density, along with a discussion of geological ore reserve estimation methods.

Around the beginning of the 20th Century, annual aggregate production in the United States amounted to about 50 million short tons. Today annual aggregate production is nearly 2.5 billion tons. Over a third of the States in the country produce more aggregate than the Nation did at the turn of the century. I would like to describe some of the historical events that allowed this nearly 50 fold increase in aggregate production. You might wonder why I want to talk about history. Some of our best ideas lie buried in the past, waiting to be rediscovered in the present. Almost every issue that the aggregate industry experiences today has been recognized for at least a decade; many of those issues have been recognized for a half a century; and a few of them have been recognized for nearly a century. The main reason for this article is to save the past from the forgetful indifference of the present-to faithfully preserve the past, to illustrate the insights of our predecessors, and to demonstrate how little of what we know today is really new.

The United States Department of the Interior's Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is responsible for regulating active coal mining and reclaiming abandoned coal mines in the United States. In working with the State government agencies that implement these programs, OSM is building a new approach that moves away from traditional "command and control" regulation and towards an approach that focuses on providing long-term environmental and economic sustainability on lands disturbed by coal mining. This initiative called "Reclaim the Future!" looks to enhance opportunities for economic development, wildlife preservation and enhancement, reforestation, and other beneficial and productive uses of lands disturbed by coal mining. The initiative is also focused on ensuring that the landowners and the local public have significant involvement in determining how best to reclaim mine sites and what post-mining land uses are most appropriate for each individual abandoned mine reclamation project or active mine reclamation. Through the use of the best scientific input in an open, participatory process, OSM hopes to further sustainable development principles for coal mining within the framework of existing United States law.

INTRODUCTION The planned 166 kilometer (103 mile) Metro rapid rail transit system in Washington, D.C. is being designed and constructed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. At the present time, 112.6 kilometers (70 miles) of this system is in operation and contains 21 route-kilometers (13 miles) of rock tunneling, and 14.5 route-kilometers (9 miles) of soft ground tunneling. An additional 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of single track tunnels in rock are planned and 6 additional contracts will consist of some 8 kilometers (5 miles) of twin tunnel, resulting in 16 additional linear kilometers (10 miles) of single track tunnel in soft ground. The Authority plans, upon its evaluation and the recommendation of the General Engineering Consultant, to include an alternative design incorporating the convergence confinement method of construction known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), for Sections E-5, E-6e and E-8a of the E-Route. The Metro system is constructed in a variety of geological conditions and crosses the boundary of two major geographic provinces. The DeLamar Silver Mine is a Joint Venture between Earth Resources Company, the Canadian Superior Mining Company and the Superior Oil Company. The property is a consolidation of several old operations in the district. The more widely known are the DeLamar and Sommercamp Mines. The location is 20 miles northeast of Jordan Valley, Oregon and 55 miles southwest of Boise, Idaho. The mine is on the south slope of DeLamar Mountain in the Owyhee Mountains of southwest Idaho Initial interest started in 1969 with serious exploration beginning in 1970. The feasibility study was completed in 1974, and in 1975 Mountain States Engineers were retained to design and build the plant. Processing of ore began in March of 1977 with the first bullion poured in April of that year. The plant is currently processing some 2200 TPD of ore with a grade of four ounces of silver and 0.03 oz. of gold per ton of ore. Cyanide consumption is 2.5 lb/ton, zinc consumption of 0.3 lb/ton and flocculent consumption of 0.5 lb/ton. A flowsheet is shown as Figure I. The grinding circuit is of two stage design. The primary mill is an 18 ft. dia. by 9 ft. long semi-autogenous unit. The secondary mill is a 9 1/2 ft. dia. by 15 ft. long overflow ball mill. The mill discharges are combined and sent to 15 in. cyclones for classification. Cyclone overflow reports to leaching with the underflows reporting to the ball mill. The cyclone feed pump is an 8X6 metal case pump. The primary mill has 1000 installed horsepower and rotates at 68% of critical speed. The ball mill has 700 installed horsepower and rotates at 72% of critical speed. Because the primary mill is horsepower limited the ball charge is varied to maintain the desired throughput. The mill power is held at 980-990 HP by modifying the feed rate. Four inch forged steel balls are added any time the ore feed fails to reach 100 tons per hour for four hours. During periods of extremely hard ore, the ball charge has been as high as 14 v/o and at other times the mill has operated fully autogenous for weeks.

The Hutti Greenstone belt, located in the northern side of Dharwar Craton, India, contains several promising gold fields. It is predominantly composed of meta-volcanics with minor intercalations of meta-sedimentaries. Alkali-SiO2 and Zr-P2O5 diagrams, immobile element trends, and an iron-rich trend on the AFM diagram indicate that the volcanic suite is low-potassium tholeiitic basalt. The lower Mg number, MgO-TiO2, MgO-Ni, and Ni-Zr plots reveal that the basalt was derived from a fractionated, highly evolved magma generated by 10-20% melting of the mantle at 1100°C and 5 kb pressure. The chemical variations suggest that the Hutti metabasalt represents volcanic arc rocks generated at a converging plate margin.

As the size of the mills get larger and the liners get heavier, a better means had to be found to handle liner replacement. McLellan Industries is famous for their innovative ideas and was called upon by an engineering company to develop a mill liner crane. The first crane was developed for Similkameen about 1969 to serve a 32' 0 x 14' Long SAG Mill. The next was Island Copper in Port Hardy, B.c., the same size as Similkameen in 1970. At that time, we took existing hydraulic cranes and modified them to meet the mill configuration. In 1973, we developed a completely new approach for the Southern Peru copper mine at Tacna, Peru for a Ball Mill, size 16'-6" 0 X 19' Long. Each installation required a design study to meet the change in mill size, trunnion size, elevation of floor to feed trunnion, area at the feed or discharge end of the mill. We have supplied self-propelled units as well as lift in. When there is no room at the feed end and if the mill has a trunnion overflow discharge, we have the mill supplier provide a structural frame to span the sump and move the mill liner handier into position with the use of the overhead crane or a mobile crane.

Instrumentation and observation of real mine structures helped define the pressure arch at White Pine, a large copper mine in sedimentary rocks. The pressure arch, which is attributed to inherent horizontal stresses, is used in the design of mine openings.

In many mining operations, particularly northern open-pit mines, large seasonal variations in grinding slurry temperature can occur. It is shown in this paper that this temperature shift can cause a winter-time loss in autogenous grinding efficiency of as much as 20Y. if it is not controlled. Laboratory experimentation indicates that much of this effect is due to increases in slurry viscosity as the temperature is decreased. An additional effect may result from changes in rock strength upon freezing, for which possible mechanisms are discussed. However, no effect clearly resulting from rock strength changes has been definitely confirmed.
