Introduction Screening is an art, one of the oldest in the process field today, and one of the most widely used in our present age. Screening is being applied to an ever-increasing number of assignments, in an ever-expanding circle of industries. Screening is defined precisely as a mechanical process which accomplishes a separation of particles on the basis of size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. Particles are presented to apertures in a screening surface and rejected if larger than the opening, or accepted and passed through if smaller. Screens are machines with screening surfaces used to classify materials by size. The screening surface is the medium containing the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. Screens are put to many uses - size separation, dewatering, desliming, media recovery, scalping, trash removal, washing, dedusting, conveying, concentration, and many combinations of these functions. INTRODUCTION In each given set of operational criteria for tunnel design, ground conditions dictate the selection of the most appropriate construction method and tunnel lining. The designer has the responsibility to choose or restrict the choice of the tunnel lining to insure that the final solution provides a cost-effective permanent construction which will require the minimum of maintenance and endure to the benefit of future generations. This Paper deals with some of the aspects of precast concrete tunnel linings, their history and development through the years. It does not purport to be a comprehensive review of all that has ever been tried or developed but, hopefully, a starting point to encourage discussion and development for the future. BOLTED LINERS As a result of anticipating a shortage of cast iron tunnel lining in 1936 when work was proceeding on London Transport's Central Line Metro, a design for the precast reinforced concrete bolted lining was born. The design took the form of the traditional cast-iron lining but with substantial concrete stiffeners to take the shield ram forces. This new lining was used to construct some 14,000 feet of running tunnel using a ring width of 1'8" which was the standard cast-iron width of the time. (Groves, G.L., 1943)

Linear grade distribution measurements determined from polished sections of randomly oriented particles can be used to estimate the extent of liberation for multiphase particles of specified size. Two techniques, optical image analysis and microprobe analysis, have been used to establish linear grade distributions. Both techniques were evaluated and compared using variable grade samples of products from a copper porphyry flotation circuit. The statistical significance of the linear grade distribution data obtained by optical image analysis was assessed. The average chalcopyrite content of these samples, as determined by chemical assay was used to estimate the variance of the experimental procedure. For a given accuracy, the number of particles required to obtain an unbiased representation of the sample was determined.

The longterm future of Glencores’ mining operations in the Sudbury basin area of Ontario, Canada likely depends on mining deposits at depths below two kilometres. To gain a better insight into the rockmass response to mining, a geological scouthole program has been implemented at Glencores’ Nickel Rim Deep and Onaping Depth Project to gain insight into rockmass conditions ahead of the devel-opment face. The scouthole program involves drilling long (up to 600 m) subhorizontal boreholes drilled ahead of the development end and collecting data about the rockmass conditions from various geophysi-cal and mechanical tools (in addition to conventional core logging). Once all data has been collected and the borehole is available, seismic sensors are installed up to 450 m down the hole as part of the micro-seismic monitoring program with the leading sensor always located ahead of the development end. The recorded seismic data is used to provide realtime insight into the rockmass response to mining. On May 20, 2017 a flurry of seismicity with a maximum moment magnitude (Mw) of 0.7 occurred causing damage to the ramp heading. Data from the microseismic monitoring system had indicated that conditions at the development end were changing prior to the rockburst. A back analysis of the scouthole data indicated a clear anomaly in the rockmass at the location of the rockburst. The scouthole data also provided sufficient information to suggest that once this anomalous zone was exited, mining conditions would improve. With the microseismic monitoring system providing realtime information from the rockmass, the area was re-habilitated and ramp development continued successfully. Details of the rehabilitation and adjustments to the ramp development are discussed. Some correlations between the scouthole data and recorded micro-seismicity are also presented.

The Santa Fe Railway serves the dominant U. S. potash producing region which is centered at Carlsbad, NM. This rail system extends over 12,000 miles stretching from Chicago to the Texas Gulf Coast to the state of California. (see Figure 1) Since Carlsbad mining operations began in the 1930?s, Santa Fe has been transporting potash to many of the important grain producing areas of the country and to the major ports in Texas and California. Santa Fe has maintained a close relationship with the potash companies and has adopted a marketing philosophy of attempting to maximize opportunities for the Carlsbad producers where it is mutually beneficial. Potash has been an important commodity for the Santa Fe. It accounted for 8% of our revenue in 1965 and 3% in 1984. In the 1950?s, Carlsbad became the second largest revenue producing point on the Santa Fe. But this prominent position has diminished as ore reserves became depleted, imports flooded the U. S. market, and truck transportation developed.

Cathodic protection using impressed current was employed to reduce mill wall wear during ball milling. Wear rates were determined from weight-loss measurements made on four 1-in.-diam mild steel coupons that were installed flush with the interior surface of the mill wall. Grinding tests were conducted on quartz, pyrite and quartz-pyrite mixtures at pH levels of 4.6, 7.1 and 9.2. Cathodic protection was shown to reduce mill wear by 30% to 60%. An examination of the coupon surfaces using scanning electron microscopy showed that cathodic protection greatly reduced pitting corrosion. The presence of a sulfide mineral, such as pyrite, was found to increase the wear rate significantly, possibly due to galvanic interactions. It was also found that the wear rate is significantly higher than the sum of abrasive wear and the corrosive wear, due to a synergistic effect.

Carbonaceous material (CM) from the Barrick Goldstrike Mines, NV, was characterized with respect to its gold sorption (preg-robbing) and gold recovery behavior. The breadth of graphite peaks measured by X-ray diffraction were used to calculate crystallite dimensions (002) of the CM. The (002) dimension was found to vary inversely with preg-robbing activity and directly with gold-recovery behavior, indicating that the degree of graphitization (maturation) experienced by the carbonaceous material is correlated with gold-loss during ore processing. The inverse correlation of preg-robbing activity was improved when percent preg-robbing was regressed against (002) crystallite size and carbon content. The (101) crystallite dimensions of all samples were calculated from laser Raman analysis, and were not found to correlate with preg-robbing behavior of the CM. BET surface area and micropore size distribution results were affected by grinding history, negating comparison of these characteristics between samples.

Heightened environmental consciousness has resulted in the development of various international accords dealing with natural resource management. This international awareness is now being translated into regional and local initiatives that proactively implement collaborative environmental management programs. One such program was recently initiated in northern Chile in recognition of the interconnection of Andean salars. Cooperative efforts between industry, governmental agencies and academic professionals have resulted in the implementation of simultaneous environmental monitoring of flora and fauna in the salars of northern Chile. This coordinated effort is leading to an improved understanding of the migratory patterns of South American fauna, as well as improved access to an expanded database for the multiple user groups associated with the Andean salars. The El Abra Mine is actively participating in these coordinated monitoring efforts.

Vertical hoisting of materials using hoists and skips is common in the Mining Industry. These systems have a number of drawbacks, one being limited hoisting capacity at medium depths. FKC-Lake Shore and Metso Flexowell have been developing and installing vertical belts for medium depth shaft applications for many years, progressively going deeper whilst increasing belt capacity. The latest development from Metso the Pocketlift® belt advances this technology allowing higher tonnages to be lifted from greater depths. The design, manufacture, installation and operational experience of a 1818 tonnes capacity, 273 meters vertical lift Pocketlift® system at the White County Coal Pattiki 2 mine is the subject of this work.

An Ore bed magnetic liner element is made of permanent ceramic magnets embedded in a rubber molding. (See figure 1) They are difficult and expensive to manufacture correctly. Therefore, the lining for a complete mill is expensive, as high as 400% more than conventional rubber liners. The magnets are not very resistant to impact as they are very brittle. Mills of 12 feet or more can use only I inch balls; mills under 12 feet can use balls of 1-1/2 inches. These liners are therefore used in regrind applications with small balls or in secondary pebble mills. Rubber liners for these applications last a long time, so if life was the only consideration, the pay back for these liners would be longer than the life of the mine. The Ore bed liner and its bed of ball chips or magnetic ore is relatively thin and the surface of this bed has a high coefficient of friction. The liners are made so that opposing poles are situated next to each other and that the mill shell and the bed of ore or ball chips completes the magnetic circuit. (See figure 2) The combinations of these properties results in a very efficient liner. Due to the low profile of this bed, there is no material that is lifted too high, so we have a very compact charge with very high attrition, good for fine grinding. These liners have shown a 10% ball consumption reduction and a 10% lower power draw for the same capacity. Due to the magnetic orientation, the bed is formed in a wave shape along the lines of magnetic force. Tests conducted at a copper mine in the southwest United States have confirmed these findings. The mills where the liners were tested are 10.5 feet by 16 feet Hardinge regrind mills operating as overflow ball mills.

High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology has been evaluated to replace tertiary cone crushing at Coeur Rochester operations (Coeur Rochester, Inc.) as an opportunity to improve silver recovery. In 2016 and 2017, onsite and third-party pilot programs were initiated to evaluate the impact of metallurgical recovery and heap leach performance of crushed product generated by an HPGR. In 2018, Forte Dynamics evaluated the HPGR laboratory metallurgical data from Coeur Rochester and all third parties to develop field-scale leach curves based on new crushing scenarios. The laboratory recovery test work data was consolidated and scaled to field conditions to determine projected heap leach performance. Based on the metallurgical testing conducted, the replacement of current tertiary cone crushers with HPGR technology has the potential to increase Coeur Rochester’s silver recovery rate by 8%, from 61% to 69%, and shorten the overall timing of silver recoveries from 20 years to just over two years. INTRODUCTION The Rochester mine, and associated valley fill heap leach facilities is an open-pit silver and gold mine located in Pershing County, Nevada, approximately 26 miles northeast of the city of Lovelock. In 2017, Rochester produced approximately 4.7M troy oz silver (Ag) and 51k troy oz gold (Au). Ore mined at Rochester is either fed directly to the primary X-Pit crusher, crushed at an in-pit crusher system, or placed directly onto a heap leach pad as run-of-mine (ROM). Both crushing circuits are comprised of three stages of crushing to produce a nominal 3/8” ore. Primary crushing consists of jaw crushing while secondary and tertiary crushing are composed of varying cone crushers. Historical recovery rates of crushed Rochester ore average 61.4% Ag and 95.9% Au over a period of 20 years [1]. These rates were derived from third party verification of in-house metallurgical test results, crusher production and heap leach production results from 1986 through 2004 in a private report for Rochester produced by KD Engineering Co., Inc. Recovery rates are regularly verified by compositing daily samples of ore delivered to each leach pad from the X-pit crusher, in-pit crusher, and/or ROM. A proportionate split of each sample is used to generate monthly composites for metallurgical analysis utilizing column leaching and bottle roll leaching. These tests are run in a manner analogous with production conditions and deliver test results that provide expected heap leach performance. As the Rochester oxide deposit has been mineralogically and metallurgically consistent, the gold and silver recovery trends have also been consistent over the life of the project. In 2016 and 2017, onsite and third-party pilot programs were initiated to evaluate the impact of HPGR technology to metallurgical recovery and heap leach performance of crushed product in an open circuit configuration, as a potential replacement for the currently in place tertiary cone crushers. During these years, HPGR was evaluated in three phases of test work.

According to international projections and future energy scenarios, coal will continue to be a prominent fuel for the next 25 years. In fact, in many regions around the world, coal is expected to dominate the electricity sector until the year 2030. At the same time, with instability and volatility of oil prices, coal is also positioned as an alternative feed stock for conversion into liquid fuels. Energy economists maintain that coal liquefaction is viable at crude oil prices of $35 or more per barrel. Depending on technology and coal composition, 1 ton of coal can produce 1 to 4 barrels of oil. Increased coal production and the expanded utilization of coal also raise environmental concerns regarding greenhouse gases and the problem of handling CO2. Carbon sequestration research, currently conducted in many parts of the world, has demonstrated considerable potential for C-storage in unminable coal seams. Such geologic storage, when possible, can also be integrated into an enhanced coal bed methane recovery process Can coal fuel power plants and industrial facilities, provide diesel and other liquids and, at the same, also be used as a medium for permanently storing CO2? This presentation will provide a global perspective on these questions and stress on the need to reconsider, or even redefine, coal as the fuel for the future.

It is a generally accepted and widely discussed fact that the world in general, and the United States in particular, face a shortage of energy at the present time which will become worse in the future. There is, however, no sign of a similar concensus as to the actions which would prevent or overcome this expected shortage. An immense variety of solutions has, however, been put forward, ranging from the purely political to the outer fringes of sophisticated technology. One resource which surprisingly is often only cursorily included in this discussion is the immense known petroleum reserve lying within the United States. When this subject is discussed, indeed, it is usually in the context of the improvements in production or new discovery rate that could be expected to result from possible politico-economic actions that would raise the real price obtained for domestic crude. This interest in the potential for improved domestic production is undoubtedly justified, but very little attention is normally drawn to the fact that even under the most favorable policy framework the majority of the oil that has been, or will be, discovered will remain in the ground due to the inherent limitations of production through surface wells.

The listed title of my talk to-day is "MODERN ON STRAND SINTER COOLING". Perhaps it should he ve been "COMPLETION OF SINTERING ON THE STRAND" as the two are synonymous. By the very nature of the DWIGHT-LLOYD SINTERING PROCESS partial cooling on the strand is always present, but not completion of sintering and cooling on the strand. I have mentioned the Dwight-Lloyd process just to be certain the type of sintering under discussion is fully identified because some of the basic mechanisms of sintering occur in various pyro-processing of fines lying in close quiescent contact, such as powdered metals practices, some types of pellet induration, firing of briquets, or other compacts, where the entire bed is brought to, and held at, the high reaction temperatures of sintering. Figure 1, The continuous sintering process as originally conceived consisted of intimately mixing carefully proportioned burdens, placing them in a comparatively thin, draft permeable layer, on a moving grate and igniting the surface while drawing sir through the bedded burden. The moving grate was advanced slowly as the line of burning fuel travelled from the surface to the bottom of the bed and no more fire zone could be seen.

9.1 INTRODUCTION Precious metals in a leach solution are extracted, concentrated, and purified to complete the process begun in the heap and to produce an end product which will provide an economic payback to the mine developer/operator. Several different processes are required to convert the dissolved precious metals into pure metal bars. This chapter discusses the actual production of metal once it has been recovered from the pregnant leach solutions by the zinc cementation (Merrill -Crowe) or carbon adsorption processes. Metal production is generally taken to mean the production of a fairly pure "dore" bar. This chapter also reiterates some information from Chapter 8 in a slightly different context, since the focus of Chapter 8 was a fairly detailed description of the two actual recovery processes, whereas the focus of this chapter is metal production. The sale of an intermediate precious metal product is possible (as opposed to the production of dore bars at the mine site); however, the value of the precious metals is reduced by the various charges and risks associated with precious metal processing. For this reason, most operators choose to produce the most refined metal possible in order to maximize project economics. Precious metals may be extracted from the leach solution by both conventional and unconventional processes. The conventional processes are activated carbon/electrowinning (ACE) and zinc precipitation (ZIP). The unconventional processes are resin ion exchange, solvent extraction, and direct electrowinning. A typical ACE process has two circulating loops. The first loop adsorbs the cyanide-metal complexes from the dilute leach solution onto the activated carbon. A second, separate solution loop removes the cyanide-metal complexes from the activated carbon into a strong solution, the electrowinning electrolyte. Activated carbon is transferred from one fluid loop to the other. The operating cost of the ACE process is directly proportional to the quantity of carbon stripped and thus to the quantity of precious metal produced. A typical ZIP process contains a single circulating loop. The solution is filtered, deaerated, contacted with zinc, and filtered again. The barren leach solution is then returned to the heap. The Cortez Mining District has had a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862 as previously reported (1) (2). More recently Cortez Gold Mines (i) has operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the U.S. for treating higher grade finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1520 tonnes per day on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. Starting in 1973, the mill was operated at 2050 tonnes per day on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres which is located 13 kilometers to the west of the Cortez installation. In February of 1976 the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operation. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Much valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs and is well described in an earlier publication (3). Releaching of the ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez was continued with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979.

The purpose of wrapping ball mills with thermal/acoustic blankets is twofold: 1) to maintain the desired temperature inside the mill, and 2) to reduce the sound emanating from the mill. This field case study focuses solely on the latter, evaluating and documenting the sound level reduction attributed to the installation of the blankets on ball mills and its potential to reduce the noise dose experienced by the process attendant. One of the three ball mills had already been treated (baseline) before the evaluation started. However, treating the remaining two mills still proved to be very effective, further reducing ball mill noise in the near field by as much as 10.0 dBA and producing far field noise reductions of 3.0 dBA or greater, extending as far as 35 feet from the mills and to the floor above. The model developed from the survey data shows that a process attendant spending a substantial portion of a shift in the mill building will experience a significant reduction in overall noise dose.

This paper makes five major points which may be contributions to the art of limestone sinkhole engineering. First, solution cavity development in limestones is dependent in great measure on pyrite contained within the limestone. Second, rock failure is rarely involved in sinkhole problems, while soil failures are almost always the mode of occurrence. Third, draw down, depression of the water table, is a primary causative factor in sinkhole development. Fourth, lateral movement of vadose water along the soil-rock interface, sub-soil erosion, is the mechanism by which soil is stoped, raveled, piped, or removed from the soil cavern. Fifth, the ultimate or triggering factor in localizing a sinkhole collapse is any superposed mechanism which disrupts the continuity of an impermeable clay soil overburden. The above theses are presented as extensions of our observation and of published literature, with the suggestion that additional study of these mechanisms is warranted.
