The Florida phosphate industry is a leader in environmental control, both in terms of dollars spent and significant achievements. For instance, since 1960 the phosphate industry has spent over $71 million for air pollution and control devices, including installation, research and development and maintenance. Water pollution control expenditures also total in the millions, with over $69 million spent in the same 10 year period. The industry also is a leader in water conservation measures, having spent nearly $ 18 million since 1966 for conservation devices. Since phosphate is mined by strip mining, land reclamation plays an important part in the environmental control picture. Here again, the phosphate industry has met the challenge with a voluntary program of reclamation which accounts for over 20,000 acres of land useable after mining has taken place. In terms of progress in environmental control, the industry has been able over the years to solve within the limits of technology the fluoride emission problems it once had, and is currently at work solving sulfur dioxide and particulate problems. In just the past year the industry also has been extremely successful in limiting phosphorus and nitrogen discharges into area streams. The industry continues to cooperate with state and local pollution control officials on matters of environmental control, and future plans include even closer cooperation and assistance, as well as increased expenditures.

After a brief consideration of the properties of zinc sulfide minerals, their flotation characteristics, and their reactions with thiol collectors, the literature on the activation of the minerals by cupric ion, their deactivation by cyanide, and their depression is reviewed in detail. The distinction between deactivation and depression is stressed. The contradictions in the published results and theories are discussed and attempts are made to resolve them. It is concluded that, whereas all aspects of the subject require further investigation, the study of depression is most likely to yield benefits in practice.

Minproc Engineers Inc. (Minproc) recently completed the construction and start-up of a process facility to treat 14,000 t/d of gold-silver ore at Kori Kollo, Bolivia. The comminution circuit consists of crushing and SAG-ball mill grinding. Breakage characteristics of the ore were determined and a circuit model developed. This enabled variations of the circuit to be simulated, and evaluated in terms of predicted performance to provide the criteria for final engineering design. Subsequently, analysis of the operating circuit provided data for circuit model-fitting. The validity of the original model and circuit performance predictions are discussed.

In January of 1969 the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare, through the National Air Pollution Control Administration, published a series of Air Quality Criteria (4'S) and Control Techniques (6,7) for air pollutants in compliance with the 1967 Clean Air Act which will affect the operation of all fuel burning equipment in the very near future. The design of equipment for the future which will use fossil fuels will also be affected. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the modifications which might be anticipated in the future for fuel burning equipment. One class of the several air pollutants looked at first by the USDHEW was the sulfur oxides. Other pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, will be studied and controls for these will supposedly be written in due time. The obvious use of low-sulfur fuels, coal, oil and natural gas is suggested by the Control Technique(6). Conversion to other sources of power, such as nuclear energy and hydropower, is also suggested. The statement is made that since possible hydroelectric sources are limited and nuclear plants are not yet available on a large scale, the changeover to these sources of power will not be overnight. The bulletin (6) suggests that one possible solution in some areas may be the use of low sulfur coals for short periods of time during periods of severe air pollution. A curve showing the effect of this was given in the 1969 April issue of the Power magazine, where A. E. Boyer and F. B. Kaylor of Stone and Webster also described a computer program called DOSAGE which might be used to check weather, temperature, humidity, wind direction and velocity, and sound an alarm when that 0.1% of the time per season is here that requires the use of low-sulfur fuel. A model describing size reduction and mineral liberation during grinding has been extended to include multiple classes of composite particles. The majority of the model parameters have been directly determined using computerized image processing equipment to analyze the products from batch grinding tests. A coarse-grained sphalerite ore from Tennessee, representing a nearly ideal binary mixture of sphalerite and dolomite, has been used to experimentally validate the model for the case of dry, batch grinding. In all cases, excellent agreement has been observed between the model predictions and the experimental results.

The Windy Craggy copper-cobalt-bearing massive sulfide lies in the Tatshenshini map area of northwestern British Columbia, where British Columbia joins Alaska and the Yukon. The area is covered with numerous glaciers and ice fields that mask geologic detail and hamper ground access. In 1957, Ventures Ltd., the predecessor of Falconbridge Ltd., undertook a reconnaissance of the area using a float-equipped Supercub. At that time, large lakes and glaciers were unnamed and little was known of the geology. The prospecting team was led by J.J. McDougall with Stan Bridcut as pilot-prospector. Prospecting was directed at the St. Elias Mountains between the rich Kennecott copper deposits to the northwest and the Maid of Erin silver-copper mine on the Haines Road, BC. Reconnaissance flying in 1957 and early 1958 eliminated vast segments of the Kennecott-Haines Road terrain as being too inaccessible for mining. In 1958, the Supercub landed at an unnamed lake and the terminal moraine of an unnamed 12.9-km (8-mile) long glacier was prospected. The lake was called Tats Lake and the glacier named Tats glacier (short for Tatshenshini). Float of sulfide was found in the moraine. Follow-up investigation along Tats glacier led to the discovery of several small sulfide deposits and these were staked. Prospecting active glaciers in this area can be complicated because of drainage capture by eroding valley glaciers. Glacier capture resulted in the float from one mineralized area being deposited at different times in three widely separated moraines. Float of the Windy Craggy deposit, therefore, occurs along the course of older glaciers and at the base of the currently active ones. The problem of sourcing caused much additional Supercub reconnaissance. It is interesting to note that about 40 geographic names were given various features in this unmapped portion of the St. Elias Range, and these names were ultimately officially adopted.

Central Mexico's mining districts, opened centuries ago during the Spanish conquest, still form the backbone of metal mining in the country today. Beginning at Chihuahua City, the Second Mexican Mining Rail Excursion traveled southeast from camp to camp through this major mining area to Taxco. Improved exploration, exploitation, and beneficiation methods have permitted continuous mining of many old deposits, and led to the discovery of new ones. Minerals not sought by early miners-lead, zinc, copper, and fluorite-now contribute substantially to mining activity in central Mexico. Of Mexico's five physiographic provinces, the rail excursion passed through two: the Mesa Central, and the Sierra Madre Occidental. The Mesa Central province is a wide tableland with basin and range topography, containing important base metal deposits. Mining in this region is primarily of limestone replacement ore bodies. Massive deposits form horizontal mantos or vertical chimneys. In northern Zacatecas, the Santa Eulalia and Naica mines demonstrated this character. The Sierra Madre Occidental lies west of Mesa Central in northern states, then widens to almost the entire width of the country from outside Mexico City to the southern border. The area consists of volcanic beds, several kilometers thick. These intermediate volcanics are primarily andesitic, of Tertiary age. Resting on older strata of adjoining physiographic divisions, the volcanic beds are overlain by a thick series of acidic flows and tuffs. Economic mineralization in the Sierra Madre Occidental is vein-type, primarily gold and silver. Mines at Fresnillo, Guanajuato, Pachuca, and Taxco contribute to the claim that this region is the center for precious metals in Mexico. A third type of mineralization, contact metamorphic deposits, is commercial at Santa Eulalia. First Stop, Santa Eulalia Mine tours began with the Santa Eulalia unit, located 25 km east of Chihuahua City. Mining in the region dates back to the early 1700s. The oxidation zone was worked until 1790, but mining declined until Asarco arrived in the early 1900s, building a selective flotation plant for treating primary sulfides. Asarco still owns 34% of Industrial Minera Mexico, S.A. (IMMSA), operator of the Santa Eulalia mine. Santa Eulalia currently has a milling capacity of 850 t/d. The San Antonio and Buena Tierra mines provide feedstock. Head grades at San Antonio, the mine participants toured, average 80-120 g/t of silver, 1.5-4.5% lead, 4-16% zinc, and 0.1-2.5% copper. Tin and vanadium were also recovered between 1930 and 1940. Estimated proven and probable reserves total about 7.6 Mt, although 1.8 Mt of reserves are located in areas of high water pressure and volume, which makes extraction difficult. Water is a significant production problem at the San Antonio mine. In one area, an AX drill hole encountered 2.6 m3/min (700 gal/min) at a pressure of 2.5 kPa. The City of Toronto’s Coxwell Bypass Tunnel (CBT) is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors ULC. The scope of the CBT project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five large diameter (20 and 22 meter) storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. This paper describes progress on the CBT to date and reviews the approach taken in both design and construction of the tunnels and shafts to mitigate risks and reduce cost and schedule of construction.

By its nature, seismology has been a data intensive field since the first digital computers were introduced in the 1950s. The first empirical models were developed in the same period and are still widely used today, for instance, the Gutenberg-Richter frequency-magnitude relationship (Gutenberg and Richter, 1956). Machine learning (ML) methods make it possible to redefine these empirical models using large datasets and examining considerably more parameters, where their significance to the problem being addressed is methodically and repeatably evaluated using robust statistical methods. In this paper we develop a simple logistic model for the short-term prediction of seismic events above a threshold magnitude from a mine’s event catalogue comprising more than a million events with 14 basic parameters from which a pool of over 830 derived parameters was developed, covering a series of 11 precursory time windows. The logistic model was fitted stepwise using SAS with α = 0.025 for both entry and acceptance. 25 variables from the pool met the acceptance criterion. The findings were surprising in that parameters a rock engineer or seismologist might have expected to be the most significant in the logistic model were not; instead, it was an increase in standard deviation of the immediately-prior seismic magnitudes that carried the most weight, followed by the average maximum source displacement and median apparent volume change. These findings make intuitive sense because the increasing scatter of the magnitude shows an increasing number of large events being recorded that could be indicative of instability in the system that could lead to large events. The model is rudimentary and enormous scope exists for more exploration in terms of data pre-processing, model types, and response variable definitions.

A series of computer programs for the analysis and mapping of coal-related data has been developed at the Illinois State Geological Survey; these programs, known collectively as the Coal Data System, represent the latest achievements in computer processing of geologic data at the Survey. Building upon programs previously developed in the Survey's Computer Services Unit, they expand the scope of the computerized data base that the Survey has been using for analyzing coal-related data. The System was partially developed during a joint study by the Illinois State Water Survey and the Geological Survey entitled, ?Coal and Water Resources for Coal Conversion in Illinois.? 2 In that study the available coal reserves more than 42 inches thick in the two principal coal seams throughout the state were mapped. The System was used to calculate the coal reserves and to report the average number of tons of coal in place per square mile in each township (Figures 1 and 2). It also produced maps of the coal features of sufficient quality to be printed on material that was scribed as master copy for the printing of full-color 1:500,000 scale maps (see Figures 3 and 4).

Accurate and economic control of line and grade on long tunnels, large structures, excavations and waterways, has been a problem to surveyors and engineers for decades. The conventional method of surveying, incorporating a level, transit, and a number of surveying technicians, has proven, in the past, to be a very expensive and time-consuming operation. Alignment with a laser has solved most of the problem. Figure 1. With the advent of the Perkin-Elmer Model 5620 Construction Laser, use of laser light is now both dependable and economically feasible for unlimited applications in modern construction and surveying. The laser projects a continuous, narrow red beam of brilliant light, providing a constant alignment reference, and will not interfere with operations.

Over the past 30 years, the coal industry has been continually striving to perfect methods for cleaning fine coal to acceptable ash and sulfur contents while maintaining maximum product yield. The flotation process has been part of this effort and its importance is expected to grow as new utilization technology demands finer and purer coal products. The work outlined in this paper is part of a larger effort aimed at development of new and improved flotation systems for removing sulfur and ash from as-mined coal as well as for producing super-clean coal for future markets. The concepts and data presented are now serving as a basis for designing fine-coal circuits in which improved efficiency is obtained by optimum use of flotation.

Epithermal gold deposits occur in and near the marginal fault that circumscribes the Goldfield, Nevada, Tertiary caldera. The gold occurs disseminated in alunite, pyrite, and kaolin- bearing silicified zones that are controlled by the circular faults. Other Tertiary calderas (i.e., Summitville and Red Mountain No. 3) have epithermal disseminated gold deposits located in and near their marginal circular faults in settings that resemble the Goldfield example. These additional caldera- controlled epithermal gold deposits are also characterized by alunite, pyrite, and kaolin-bearing silicified rock that act as hosts for the gold disseminations. The Goldfield District is therefore an exploration model for those seeking disseminated epithermal gold deposits in a caldera setting.

Catastrophic failures of dams and tailing storage facilities (TSF) have triggered the development of integrated ground monitoring concepts for hazard assessment, risk management and public safety. These concepts are based on knowledge and expertise of persons technically responsible for TSF. The aim is to combine this implicit and explicit knowledge with the data of in-situ- and remote sensors. Risk management for TSF must include a comprehensive monitoring program that integrates data from ground based-, air-borneand satellite-based sensors. Researchers at Technical University Georg Agricola (THGA) in Bochum, and EFTAS, Muenster, Germany, are fusing a variety of sensor data to enhance the capability and performance of TSF monitoring to ensure public safety downstream of TSFs. This paper describes the variety of sensors implemented in numerous research projects. It gives an outlook in terms of planned satellite missions with innovative equipment like hyperspectral sensors. The implementation of the data of these sensors in the analysis will increase the understanding of spatio-temporal impacts of mining activities. Future opportunities are explained by a datacube approach.

This United States Bureau of Mines study is based on a review of U.S. mine fire accidents that occurred from 1970 through 1989. Information on these accidents was obtained through investigative reports written by Mine Safety and Health Administration personnel. For this study, 260 mine fire accident reports were examined. A previous Bureau research effort established that fires causing fatalities were more likely to occur in haulage entries than at any other underground location. This study has found that the most prolific source of haulage entry fires was the inadvertent grounding of trolley wires. The largest segment (15 out of 40 trolley wire fires) resulted from not maintaining adequate clearance between the trolley wire and the vehicle. Several novel fire prevention and control ideas have evolved in response to frequently occurring fire-related problems. These included; discriminating power isolation devices, wire cutting devices, more accessible fire extinguishers, vehicle overcurrent protection, and vehicle fire suppression.

The subject of this discussion is timely. The U.S. phosphate industry is suffering the throes of depression. It's plight is a matter of widespread concern. The future role of the U.S. industry in world markets is of particular interest. If we should prognosticate phosphate supply-demand on the basis of recent history, we would face a puzzling choice of scenario. In 1980, perhaps the best year ever for U.S. phosphate, 54.6 million metric tons of phosphate rock entered the market place. Of this, more than half was exported -- divided almost equally - as rock or phosphate fertilizer. During the last half of 1981 the situation had begun to change.

Coal and water are the two basic external feedstocks required for a coal gasification project. The WESCO project in northwest New Mexico, a joint undertaking of Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation and Pacific Lighting Corporation, will require about 25,000 tons of coal and approximately 7.5 million gallons of water each day to produce 250 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of pipeline quality substitute natural gas (SNG). The coal and water supply arrangement with Utah International, Inc. assures the project of an adequate supply of these two vital feedstocks.

The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel project involves the construction of a bored tunnel under Thimble Shoal Channel in Chesapeake Bay (VA), between two artificial islands and parallel to the existing tube tunnel, built in the sixties. It will be the first transportation tunnel constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), a 44-foot-diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) named "Chessie," manufactured by Herrenknecht, and which was assembled at the CBBT's southernmost island, with extremely limited room, live adjacent traffic, and difficult access. "Chessie" was successfully launched in February 2023 and this paper describes this complex and challenging process.

Prior to 1950 Magma's ore production came from two parallel, steeply dipping, east-west striking mineralized faults, one called the Main or Magma vein, and the other the Koerner vein, which lay about 1100 feet to the south, This vein system has been explored and mined over 9000 feet horizontally and 4800 vertically. In 1950 continued exploration led to the discovery and subsequent development of replacement ore bodies in the Devonian limestone zones adjacent to the veins. These replacement deposits occur in the eastern part of the Magma Mine, and follow the strike and the 30" east dip of the host limestone. Strike length of the ore bodies varies from 250 to 500 ft., and thickness from 15 to 125 ft. The ore bodies are large tabular masses with chalcopyrite and bornite being the dominant ore minerals. Hematite and pyrite are the most abundant gangue minerals. Incompetent limestone, shale, or a porphyry sill hanging wall is charactertistic of substantial portions of the replacement beds. In many instances the ore itself is blocky, badly fractured, and intermixed with layers of limestone gouge, pyrite and hematite.
