In a fully mechanized top coal caving mining process, the mechanical properties of the top coal deteriorate constantly, and the stability of the support is determined by the boundary position of the top coal entering the limit equilibrium state. Top coal flaking occurs more easily along the advancing direction owing to an increase in the distance of the boundary from the wall. Moreover, the strength of the coal seam is an important factor that determines the boundary position. The equation of the top coal limit equilibrium zone boundary, used in fully mechanized top coal caving mining, was determined based on the limit equilibrium theory, continuum damage mechanics, and the Hoek–Brown rock empirical strength criterion. Using the RFPA3D and UDEC numerical analysis methods, the effect of top coal strength on the mechanical behavior during the mining process was determined; and the space–time relationship between the top coal deformation failure, damage evolution, and boundary of the limit equilibrium zone was established. The results revealed that when the coal mass entered the limit equilibrium zone, accelerated crack development, accelerated damage, and axial unloading occurred. Moreover, an increase in the coal seam strength caused the boundary of the top coal limit equilibrium zone to be closer to the wall. By comparing the numerical results with the theoretical results, the overall trend was found to be consistent, allowing the verification of the rationality and reliability of the determination equation of the boundary position of the limit equilibrium zone.

INTRODUCTION The concern of occupational exposure to diesel exhaust pollutants is an important workplace issue for the mining industry. During the last three decades of diesel operations at Inco, a significant amount of research and improvement has been made in the area of work environment, and effective diesel operation. This paper will review the experience gained by Inco's Ontario Division from the implementation and the use of modern engines, improved fuel quality, and the exhaust control technology, coupled with adherence to proper maintenance and ventilation design and practices. Past monitoring practices and the current occupational monitoring program at lnco are outlined. A major new research initiative involving multi-stake holders in diesel performance is described. MINING IN THE SUDBURY AREA The discovery of nickel-copper ore in the Sudbury area dates back to the year 1856. The existence of this orebody was noticed when a strong compass deflection was observed by a provincial surveyor. This discovery, even though documented in official re- ports, failed to arouse any public attention at that time. In 1884, a rock-cut was blasted through a small hill near the village of Sudbury to permit laying track for the Canadian Pacific Railway (Boldt 1967). The rock-cut uncovered a body of massive sulfides with a copper content of over nine percent. The mineralization is concentrated along the outer margin of the Sudbury Basin, an oval-shaped structure having a dimension of 55 x 95 kilometres. The ore extends down-dip to to at least 3000 metres below the surface. The mining methods at lnco can be divided into two categories: "filled-stope" and 'bulk" mining. This division, in the broad sense, may also reflect the environmental conditions of the mine. In the past, the selection of a mining method was based on the size, shape, grade and the strength of the ore and its surroundings. The recent development of improved technology and mining equipment permitted wider application of low cost bulk mining methods. UNDERGROUND DIESEL EQUIPMENT The first diesel-powered machine, a 145-horsepower scooptram, was put into operation in March 1966, in a cut-and-fill stoping complex at Frood Mine. The number of diesel machines underground in the Inco, Ontario Division, mines was increased to 360 units by 1971,550 in 1977 (Rutherford 1978), and over 830 diesel-powered units in 1995. The following list indicates current mobile diesel equipment. LHD 194 Loaders 81 Trucks 28 Jumbo Drills 78 Personnel Carrier 101 Service Equipment 155 Locomotives 50 Bolters 30 Scissor Lift 113 About 20 percent of the LHD and truck units are equipped with electronic fuel controlled engines. COMPOSITION OF DIESEL EXHAUST Diesel exhaust contains hundreds of pollutants (Watts 19921, including components of unburned fuel and lubricating oil and products of incomplete combustion of the fuel and oil. These pollutants are emitted either as gases or as particles. Gaseous pollutants include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur ox- ides, as well as a variety of organic compounds, such as hydro- carbons, aldehydes, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. The particle phase, also known as diesel particulate matter (DPM), is the filterable portion of diesel exhaust. Figure 1 depicts the trimodal particle size distribution that arises from different mechanisms of aerosol generation (Cantrell and Rubow 1992). Primary combustion aerosols, including diesel exhaust aerosol, are formed as very small particles (in the 0.001 to 0.08 micrometre range), but physical mechanisms such as condensation and coagulation quickly transfer the aerosol mass from the nuclei mode to the accumulation mode. These processes result in a mass median diameter of approximately 0.2 micrometres for diesel particulate matter, and 90% of the particles are less than 1.0 micrometre in size. These particles have a high surface area, permitting the adsorption of different substances produced during combustion. Mechanically generated aerosols, on the other hand, typically contain particles greater than 1 micrometre in diameter. The particle phases of diesel exhaust contain three components (Bagley, et al, 1996) shown by Figure 2, namely: a carbon- aceous fraction composed mainly of solid-carbon particles, a sulfate fraction containing small hydrated sulfate particles, and a soluble fraction that contains compounds that are soluble in organic solvents and are adsorbed or condensed onto carbon core particles. These compounds consist primarily of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and PAH's and may contribute 15% to 45% of the weight of the total particulate matter (Schuetzle, 1983). The control of these pollutants is necessary to ensure a healthy work environment. A four-mile length of interceptor sewer tunnel in Manhattan has finished sizes ranging from 10'6" to 14'6" horseshoe. Mixed face conditions were anticipated in three areas and encountered in five. All were short but since the tunnel lies well below the water table and failures would involve important utilities, major structures and human lives, great care had to be exercized in choosing a construc¬tion method. Chemical consolidation was selected as the best approach with compressed air working as a backup system. Initially grouting was accomplished from within the tunnel, but treatment from the surface was more successful and was later adopted. The soils consisted largely of impermeable weak silts and it was found possible to inhibit access of water to this material so that it could be controlled by breasting within the tunnel without loss of stability. It is concluded that in the interlayered permeable and impermeable soils encountered, chemical grouting would successfully stabilize the working face. INTRODUCTION An interceptor sewer is currently under construction along the entire length of the west side of Manhattan. When complete, the tunnel will intercept and divert to a treatment plant (also under construction) a daily flow in excess of 200 million gallons per day. About 9 miles of the interceptor sewer is in tunnel and the remain¬der is cut-and-cover construction. INTRODUCTION Until recently, gamma doses had been largely ignored in Ontario uranium mines. This has been due to the assumption that these doses are small and have been more or less unchanged with time and hence their effects have been included automatically in the epidemiological studies that led to the establishment of radon daughter exposure limits. This assumption had to be challenged for two basic reasons. The first was that radon daughter exposures to miners have been progressively reduced over the years due to improved ventilation and ever more stringent regulations, while gamma exposures have presumably remained relatively unchanged. Therefore it must be assumed that the ratio of gamma to radon daughter exposure has gone up. The second reason is more philosophical. It is clearly inappropriate to make judgements on the significance of a potential industrial hazard when the magnitude of that hazard has not been fully assessed. Having decided that some sort of assessment of gamma exposures to uranium miners must be made, it was than necessary to determine how this should be done. Several options were available, for instance: (i) Wholesale personal gamma dosimetry for all mine and mill workers, (ii) Personal gamma dosimetry only for those workers suspected of receiving the higher doses, coupled with area monitoring to estimate the exposures of other workers, (iii) Area monitoring coupled with dose rate times time calculations for all. This would correspond to the generally prevalent method of assessing radon daughter exposures. It was argued that since radon daughter exposures are the major radiological hazard in uranium mines, to invest resources for assessing a lesser hazard to a greater degree of precision was not cost effective. (iv) Since gamma dose rate is related to ore grade, individual doses could be assigned from knowledge of work location and ore grade. Before deciding which of these options would be most appropriate, it was necessary to have some idea of the magnitude of the problem. Very few data were available in the literature and with the exception of a few spot dose rate measurements, and the results of a few gamma dosimeters issued to selected individuals by some of the mining companies, nothing was available. A rule of thumb of obscure origin is often quoted within the industry indicating that gamma dose rates underground will be about 0.25 mR/h per lb/ton or 5 mR/h per % U. This had been used by some to justify neglecting gamma radiation at least for ore grades of the order of 0.1% or 2 lb/ton, on the grounds that gamma dose rates would be of the order of 0.5 mR/h and therefore give rise to annual doses of only about 10 mSv (lrem). That is, it was assumed that gamma radiation was of limited concern compared to the hazard associated with the inhalation of radon daughters. We were thus faced with the situation of just assuming that no regulatory limits were being breached. This situation could not be allowed to continue. A program was initiated to investigate the gamma doses absorbed by uranium miners in three mines in Ontario, and extensive gamma surveys were conducted in the Quirke 2 mine of Rio Algom Ltd, Elliot Lake; Denison Mine, Elliot Lake; and Agnew Lake Mine, Espanola. Negative reaction was received from several mine company officials to the possibility of all miners being required to wear personal gamma dosimeters due to the logistical difficulties involved, and therefore part of the project was aimed at determining if a reliable correlation between gamma dose rate and ore grade in the work location could be deduced, in order that dose rate times time calculations might be used for gamma dose assessments. The results of these programs provided evidence that the gamma dose for some employees in the three mines investigated may be a significant fraction of the current maximum permissible annual dose of 50mSv (5 rem). When combined with radon daughter exposures in the manner recommended by the ICRP at their 1980 Brighton meeting (ICRP 80) the results indicated that some individuals will come close to the resulting limit and may even exceed it. The U.S. coal industry is under-going dramatic changes to meet the challenges of the keenly competitive fuels market. The application of innovative technologies is needed to improve safety and to increase productivity in order to make coal more competitive as a fuel. As more coal companies shift into capital intensive longwall mining, there is a clear need to invest more in exploration before mine plans are made. Coal seam anomalies may create adverse mining conditions. The early detection of these anomalies could make the longwall mining safer and more productive through improved planning. A standard exploratory drilling program can provide only limited geologic information. The seismic reflection technique can be used to detect coal seam anomalies and is effective in reconnaissance surveying. Recent advances in the quality of coal seismic data have increased the success rate of seismic surveying. Therefore, surface seismic surveys, coupled with selective drilling, will come to play an integral role in coal exploration in the 1990s.

"The City of Ottawa’s Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel consists of two interconnected tunnels totaling 6.2 km with a diameter of 3m including access shafts and hydraulic structures which connect to the City’s most critical sewers. This tunnel will be built 15m to 30m below ground in the downtown core adjacent to, and crossing below, the Light Rail Tunnel, which introduces additional considerations in terms of sequencing and risk mitigation. The City embarked on a unique Procurement Process to address the risks involved with a large tunnel project and those associated with tunneling below downtown, underneath and adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and connecting to live critical sewers. This paper describes the unique procurement approach employed and the contractual risk mitigation measures developed to provide the best value while minimizing risk. Specific features include Market Sounding, using a Fairness Commissioner, Contractor Prequalification and Risk Mitigation Measures in the Tender documents. INTRODUCTION This paper describes how the City of Ottawa (the City) and the project design team developed a strategic Procurement Process and Tender that incorporated industry best practices for technical and contractual risk management for the Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) project. The process was unique in that, while it employed a systematic review of project risks, it also solicited input from industry, stakeholders and provincial and federal partners to develop the request for Tender for this traditional design-bid-build project. Key drivers for this approach were initiated from the City’s concerns for cost control, cost certainty and overall project risk mitigation. To address these concerns, the City implemented the risk review and mitigation process right from the project design team selection. It was critical that the project design team embraced this risk management philosophy and carried it through each phase of the project. This paper serves as an excellent resource for municipalities or other owners embarking on a similar tunnel project, on how to properly apply industry best practices and the benefits of using them."

In 1978, Ozark Lead Company made the decision to expand the capacity of its mine/mill complex by 33%. The objectives of the expansion were to (a) increase mine' production capacity by 1816 tonne/d(2000 TPD), (b) increase lead metal pro¬duction by 21,790 tonne/y (24,000 TPY) and to (c) construct new facilities and/or modify exis¬ting equipment to accomodate the increased pro¬duction. The intent of this paper is to give a brief explanation of the equipment installed and the overall production and metallurgical benefits-realized from this expansion. The expansion was completed in the second half of 1980 with all equipment debugging and fine tuning completed by the first' quarter of 1981. The concentrator modifications and improvements were basically restricted to four areas: (1) materials handling, (2) automation: of the mill grinding circuit, (3) the increase of flotation capacity, and (4) concentrate dewatering.

The Vesta Preparation Plant of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation is located on the Monongahela River, eight miles south of Brownsville, Pennsylvania. This plant is capable of cleaning 2400 NT/hr of a mixture of Pittsburgh seam high volatile coals from the Vesta and Shannopin mines to produce a metallurgical coal of 6.75% ash and a steam coal containing 14% ash. Heavy media vessels are utilized to upgrade the coarse coal while launders and tables. handle the -1/4" fraction of the raw coal feed. Cleaned -coal goes to boot classifiers where the +48 mesh material settles and is removed by bucket elevators. This 1/4 x 48 mesh material is then sent to centrifugal driers for dewatering. As designed, the minus 48 mesh fraction overflows the boot as a 7 to 8% solids slurry and is recovered by cyclones and a thickener and dewatered by filtration. The-products of the heavy media circuit, the launder-table-boot-drier circuit and the cyclone-thickener-filter circuit are combined to constitute the shipped metallurgical coal. This Vesta-Shannopin mix is combined at J&L's Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works with purchased low and medium volatile coals for the production of metallurgical coke.

This paper examines the effect of bucket geometry (cutting-blade profile, floor profile and blade thickness), speed, motor power output and muckpile particle sizes on bucket penetration and draft for rubber tire loaders. The work uses a 1:16 scale model of a load-haul-dump (LHD) in full-factorial experiments to examine the effect of the variables on penetration and maximum draft. The results show that speed and motor output are positively correlated with penetration and draft, and muckpile particle size is positively correlated with penetration and negatively correlated with draft (p < 0.0014).

Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon &apos;Yankee Ingenuity,&apos; innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

Seamounts, submarine banks, volcanoes and undercurrent channels are prominent geomorphic features that have become an important target for minerals research and exploration with the goal of future exploitation. Polymetallic ferromanganese deposits are common types of mineralization on these settings. Co-rich ferromanganese crusts are important as potential resources of Mn and Co, but also Ti, Ni, Tl, REEs, PGEs, and other metals. Many seamounts and channels along the Atlantic Spanish continental margin are known to hold mineral deposits but are poorly studied. This work presents and briefly describes the most recent activities of the Spanish Geological Survey (IGME) on exploration and investigation of ferromanganese deposits along the Atlantic Spanish continental margin. Different submarine areas from the northwestern margin of the Iberian Peninsula to the west off Canary Islands have been surveyed by geophysical, sampling and underwater observations from 89 to 4000 m water depth. The mineral deposits cover a large diversity of submarine geological and geomorphical features: mud volcanoes and diapirs related to hydrocarbon seeps, seamounts associated with hot spot volcanism, hydrothermal vents in active magmatic volcanoes, structural basement highs and banks or contourite channels. Considering the collected dataset, we present the preliminary results of the study of these mineral deposits, including ferromanganese nodules and crusts and phosphate pavements and nodules, which can be considered as potential sources of raw materials.

The mining complex, which the Mines Gaspé division of Noranda Mines Limited has operated in Murdochville since 1954, includes open pit and underground mines, two mills, one leaching plant and a smelter. The under- ground mining uses predominantly a large scale room and pillar method, rooms 15 m wide, 30 m high and 300 m long being common. Ore production is effected by 4.5 m3 front-end loaders and 32-tonne trucks powered respectively by 225 and 325 kW diesels. Daily dust and gas readings show that air quality can be maintained at an acceptable level with much less ventilation than that normally specified. This paper emphasizes the point that air requirements should be based on Air Quality Standards, thus allowing an operation to benefit from favourable conditions or from improvements such as exhaust treatment, fuel alteration, etc.

Large-scale use of CCBs in mine environments involves filling surface and underground coal mines with ash to address hydraulic problems, AMD, backfilling and subsidence. The environmental risk of land filling CCBs is generally evaluated by the Toxic Characteristics Leaching Procedure (TCLP) or the Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP). However, there is doubt regarding the applicability of these tests to long-term CCBs leaching behavior in groundwater associated with coal mines. The Mine Water Leaching Procedure (MWLP) was developed to provide a site specific risk assessment tool. The MWL Pprocedure is presented in this paper and compared with TCLP as a study.

Tailings disposal has been a problem for the mining engineer since the beginning of the metal milling process. Disposal systems in common use have evolved as the most economic method for the disposal of an unwanted waste material within the disposal restrictions in force at the time of construction. As restrictions are constantly being expanded, the design requirements for tailings disposal systems are also being enlarged. However, proper design will always be to provide the most economic disposal system that will meet current safety and pollution requirements. This paper presents a brief description of some of the design features of tailings disposal systems in common use and presents specific design features of the gypsum tailings disposal pond at Kimberley, British Columbia, owned and operated by Cominco Ltd.

The impact of conversion on the coal industry can be summarized very briefly: We are going to have to mine an awful lot of coal. Fortunately, the United States has the coal reserves available, and given the right conditions, we can mine it. The coal reserves of the United States are enormous. If we consider them on the basis of proved reserves, using the standards of the petroleum industry--that is, resources mapped and explored and recoverable with present techniques at close to present costs--and compare that with the reserves of other fuels, coal constitutes 88 per cent of the proved recoverable energy resources of the nation. That includes oil, natural gas, oil shale and uranium, so long as the uranium is used in burner reactors. If we consider resources on the basis of "ultimate recoverable" reserves, that is, those resources which can be extracted with improved technology and at somewhat higher costs--and if we include those resources of all fuels not yet found but believed to be waiting discovery--coal still accounts for 74 per cent of the national total. We have built a hydrocarbon economy in which about 76 per cent of our total energy needs are supplied by petroleum and natural gas, and about 20 per cent by coal. Domestic resources of oil and gas are running dangerously low and, assuming a continued hydrocarbon economy, the 20 per cent supplied by coal may increase dramatically. We already import nearly a quarter of the petroleum we consume, and the chief source of additional imports seems to lie in the politically unstable Middle East. Natural gas is in even shorter supply, and the problems of importing it seem at least as difficult as those of oil. The fact is, the United States is already relying to an increasing extent on foreign fuel sources. There is an obvious national risk in making an important part of energy supply hostage to foreign governments of uncertain tenure and friendliness. There is also an economic risk--one of the chief reasons for last year&apos;s economic freeze was to try to correct the deficit in our balance of payments; it is obvious

The industrial practice of froth flotation for upgrading the quality of fine coal is a relatively complex, expensive, and inefficient process when compared to the coarse- and intermediate-size coal cleaning circuits. The differences in cost and process efficiency can be attributed mainly to the lower equipment throughput, the added cost of flotation reagents, and the fact that flotation is typically a manually operated process susceptible to fluctuating feed characteristics that influence the overall operating efficiency. The emphasis in recent years has been on improving the flotation process efficiency and lowering the cost per clean ton. This has been achieved by larger flotation cell designs, implementation of flotation reagent evaluation programs, and improved process instrumentation and control. These developments are reviewed along with other current coal flotation practices.

"Tunneling and Underground works are unequivocally subject to a diversity of inherent uncertainties associated with the geotechnical, hydro-geological and environmental regime that surrounds them. On many occasions, these uncertainties can provoke loss events of considerable consequences. The present contribution elaborates on losses that the insurance market has suffered in the recent years, following a construction failure event. These losses are being considered and analysed on a quantitative basis through evaluation of cost related data, with explicit discretization of the applied construction methodology and of the subsequent developed failure type since both of which are considered of major importance. Given the identified persistence and regularity of some loss-contributing factors, recommendations are provided on the basis of a proactive risk engineering management approach that are envisaged to reinforce the understanding of project risks and alleviate the incurred insurance cost. 1 INTRODUCTION The underground construction sector has always been a very challenging area for all involved parties, including the insurance market. Main reason for that remains the uniqueness of the uncertainties sources and the subsequent inherent risks that the tunneling and underground projects are exposed to. In many instances, these risks materialize, leading to loss events with substantially high impact on reinstatement cost and incurred delays, which depending among others on the insurance coverage will have to be bared by the Insurance market. In the recent decades and as the tunneling industry boomed and expanded with many major and significant projects undertaken around the world, the insurance market was faced with additional challenges. Increased competition during tender coupled with the scale and complexity of the projects and politically driven decision making exerted pressure on the project timelines, completion dates and budget. The pressure for on-time or even early project completion- to avoid liquidated damages or achieve bonus payments, respectively- along with cost reduction efforts and the incentive for innovative failure events. That, in turn, put additional pressure on the Insurance market which had experienced a significant amount of losses with substantial cost. One of the triggered mitigation actions was the introduction of the Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (ITIG, 2006 & 2012; MunichRe 2006, Wannick, 2007, Spencer, 2008, Adeyemo, 2011)."

"INTRODUCTION The so called Porto Maravilha Project consists of the re-urbanization of a 500 ha area in the Rio de Janeiro port region. Several changes in local infrastructure are being implemented, including a significant change in the road system, with the demolition of the former “Via Perimetral” viaduct and construction of 4 new tunnels: • Saúde tunnel - 35 m long (Waimberg et al, 2014); • “Binária tunnel” - 1012 m long; • “Via Expressa” twin tunnels - 1850 m long each way. The tunnels were excavated almost completely in rock using conventional drill and blast methodology and only some short stretches in weathered rock, associated to faults zones, residual soils and marine sediments close to the tunnel portals. During excavation of access shaft and “Via Expressa” and “Binária” tunnels significant ground settlements as well as settlements of buildings founded both on shallow and deep foundations were measured. These values could not be associated to conventional tunneling induced settlement troughs. This paper focuses on the “Via Expressa” tunnels, presenting a brief description of the project as a whole, its geological and geotechnical background, monitoring results, and a discussion of possible causes of the measured settlements. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Porto Maravilha Project is an integrated multidisciplinary action on behalf of the Rio de Janeiro city council with support from the State and Federal Governments. In addition to creating new conditions for working, housing, transport, culture and leisure for the resident population, it also promotes expressive economic development in the region (Portonovo, 2015). Porto Maravilha Project is carrying out actions for the recovery of the region’s historical heritage, as well as promoting the population´s social and economic development. One of the main benefits of the Porto Maravilha Project is the construction of the new traffic system in the port area, consisting of the Express and Binário roadways. The new project, which will replace the current Perimetral Rodrigues Alves viaduct system, will increase traffic flow capacity by 27%."

"Two important aspects of excavation performance of TBM are advance rate and cutter replacement/ring consumption, which is closed to the cost and construction duration of the project. To achieve this, a database of TBM parameters and the geological-geotechnical conditions during the excavation of Yinhanjiwei was compiled and analyzed. Relationships between different geological and TBM operational parameters were investigated. Results of analyzes show that there are qualitative correlation between Field Penetration Index (FPI) and rock geological parameters. And strong relationships between FPI and operational parameters are suggested. In this study, the cutter replacement and ring consumption were analyzed using statistical method for preliminary estimation in similar conditions. 1. ITRODUCTION Hard rock TBM is widely used in tunneling project nowadays because of its advantages to conventional drilling and blasting, especially in long tunnels. The biggest advantage is its high advance rate. However, rock conditions of tunnels are complicated. So TBM performance becomes a primary topic in tunneling engineering, which includes of rate of penetration, utilization, daily advancement, cutter consumption and so on. Many prediction models have been developed to estimate the TBM performance in the project planning phase. The most widely accepted and used models around the world are semi theoretical CSM model (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and the empirical NTNU model (Blindheim, 1979, Bruland, 1998).With increasing uses of TBMs in different ground conditions, an increasing number of researchers have developed new models in order to predict the performance of TBM more accurately in similar geological conditions.(Gong and Zhao, 2009; Hassanpour et al.,2009, 2010, 2011, 2014; Delisio et al., 2013; Delisio and Zhao, 2014)"
