The objective of blending materials in a bedding pile is to reduce the variation in successive samples taken from the materials to be blended. In designing a bedding and reclaiming operation, several mechanisms are available to effect the reduction of variability, or increase in homogeneity, of the materials. These mechanisms can act before stacking, in the stacking process, in reclaiming and after reclaiming. In evaluating alternative methods of stacking and reclaiming, the potential user must judge each method on the basis of certain criteria; the capital cost of the equipment, the allowable absolute variability of the reclaimed product and the effectiveness of blending. Several stacking and reclaiming methods have been tested using a computer simulation. Based on the results of this program, factors were developed to describe the effectiveness of blending for chevron stacking of discrete materials and preblended materials, bucket wheel reclaiming and drum reclaiming. From these factors, the total effectiveness of a combined stacking and reclaiming system can be determined.

High pressure grinding mills have been successfully introduced in the industry. They offer the possibilities for capacity increase of existing plants and reduction of operating costs. Further metallurgical advantages in gold and copper are possible. The plants in operation are running in different applications and modes of operation. They can be installed in a combination with SAG and ball mills or in a stand-alone mode. In combination with other grinding mills, it has to be investigated how the HPGR can be installed to reach the full efficiency. In the underground type of mining operation, the finer portion of the waste material commonly is pumped as a hydraulic slurry to a tailings disposal pond. (1)* The tailings slurry is deposited via a pipe manifold system located around the perimeter of the pond. This method of deposition produces zoning because the coarser material tends to settle out immediately while the finer particles tend to remain in suspension and are deposited progressively nearer the center of the pond. The manifold system must be raised periodically as the pond fills with the tailings material. Over a period of time, this procedure will produce a zoned embankment known as a tailings dam. A typical pond and dam are shown in Figure 1. In plan view, the dimensions of tailings dams can be on the order of miles, with the height of the dam reaching 100 to 200 feet. Due to such factors as inadequate compaction, inherently low strength of the tailings material, and the possibility of high phreatic surface, many dams at some point become unstable, i.e., the factor of safety against a slope failure approaches 1.0. Remedial measures are required to improve the safety factor in order to prevent massive failure of the dam. In most cases, stability can be improved by effectively flattening the slope of the dam as shown in Figure 2, but this is not possible in every case. Occasionally, a tailings dam is constructed adjacent to a natural or legal boundary so that it is not possible to construct a conventional berm or to reduce the slope angle with earth moving equipment. Even a terracing process would require removal of the material and this may not be practical. In such a situation, an alternate scheme to improve stability must be found.

The majority of the regulations in Part 75 for underground coal mines have been in effect since March of 1970, almost nine years now. Although there have been some additions each year in specific areas where the need became apparent or the statute required some action, the bulk was promulgated on March 28, 1970 for the purpose of clarifying the statutory provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Many of those regulations were derived from the Federal Mine Safety Code, or from experience gained by the Bureau of Mines in the enforcement of Public Law 552. Upon passage of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, these same regulations remained in effect and the statutory requirements of the Act placed a responsibility upon the Secretary of Labor to promulgate additional regulations in specific areas not previously covered. The Federal inspectorate has received formal training at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in the proper application of the regulations, as well as routine retraining and special training courses subsequent to the promulgation of new regulations. With some exceptions, the vast majority of these regulations are nothing more than good mining practice. Basically, the regulatory problems are two-fold. There are a few specific regulations that, under certain circumstances, compliance is nearly, if not actually, impossible. There is non-uniform application of enforcement of regulations by the inspectorate based on opinions developed from personal experience of inspectors or lack of experience. The record is replete with examples of overzealous inspectors applying regulations that either do not exist or have been stretched far beyond the intent of the regulations.

It is estimated that through 1975, there were 1.69x109 m2 (418 000 acres) of urban land threatened by potential subsidence due to mining with a value of over $12 billion (19;3 dollars; USBM, 1979). With increased coal production to meet the energy needs of the nation, both these figures may be expected to increase. Hence greater attention to controlling surface damage due to subsidence is merited. In fact, the Surface `lining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) (Public Law 95-87) mandates that underground coal mining operators "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material damage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonably foreseeable use of such surface lands, ..." The term "subsidence," as used in this paper, implies the total phenomenon of surface effects associated with the mining of minerals, and not only vertical displacement of the surface as is sometimes inferred in the literature.

A major contribution to the art of blasting was made at the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company?s Hawkins Mine in Cashwauk, Minnesota during April of 1956. It was here that the first experiments with fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate were conducted-experiments which led to the development of the ammonium nitrate and fuel oil method of blasting which has been eagerly adopted by open pit and quarry operators throughout the United States. While this new blasting agent was a more or less natural outgrowth of the Akremite Process devised by Maumee Colleries of Terre Haute, Indiana; no one, to our knowledge, had used this particular combination of ingredients prior to this time. Certainly this was a "break-through" as far as the Lake Superior District was concerned. Akremite consists of a mechanical mixture of grained ammonium nitrate and a solid carbonaceous material packed in a plastic bag. At the time of its introduction to the Mesaba Range, Akremite sold for 10.5 cents a pound as compared to the 18 cent powder previously used in both wet and dry large hole blasting. The discovery of this agent was indeed a remarkable achievement, one that afforded a substantial reduction in blasting costs. However, Akremite proved to be only an intermediate step in the evolution of our present low cost explosives. Cleveland-Cliffs utilized prilled ammonium nitrate and fuel oil and then eliminated the mixing and packaging plant entirely by combining the two raw materials in the field at the drill hole collar or in the hole itself. Thus we have approached the ultimate in simplicity, for the blaster and his helper now manufacture their own explosives not only as they are needed but where they are needed, and at a cost of under 4 cents a pound. This two-man crew may charge and explode as much as 8 tons of ammonium nitrate in an eight-hour shift and in so doing break some 65,000 tons of ore.

A laboratory fixed bed reactor was used in a study of generating clean thermal energy from coal fine refuse-limestone agglomerates. The major operation variables, including Ca/S mole ratio, agglomerate size, air flow rate and temperature, which affect the rate of sulfur fixation and combustible material utilization, have been examined. The test results show that 70 percent or more of sulfur fixation and 100% of combustible material utilization can be achieved depending upon sorbent, agglomeration, and combustion conditions. The coal fine refuse limestone pellet combustion process (CLC process) requires a simple flowsheet to convert coal fine refuse as a clean solid fuel, while meeting the strict air quality standards for SO2 emissions into the atmosphere. The CLC process is an attractive method to clean up coal slurry impoundments to protect our environment.

Usually stresses generated by explosive charges during blasting are considered to propagate through materials in a spherical manner. Although conical stress-waves had been suggested by a few investigators they have never been clearly defined or critically observed. An experimental technique using models and lengths of Mild Detonating Fuse was developed to produce conical stress-waves and study their effects. Several materials with different properties were tested to compare the influence of those properties on wave shape and crater formation. The investigations showed that whenever column charges were end-initiated, conical stress-forms were produced if the explosive's velocity exceeded the energy propagation velocity of the surrounding material. The stress-cone angle significantly affected fragment size and shape as well as the geometry of craters produced.

Introduction The mining industry is perhaps best characterized by the numerous and abnormally high risks associated with the business of mining and by its most basic assets - ore deposits, people and technology. At the most fundamental level, it is the quality and effective utilization of these basic assets that determine a mining company's ability to compete efficiently in the international market place. The gold industry has received much attention in recent years and especially in recent months, for good reason. This commodity serves as an excellent platform for the subsequent discussion of these three basic assets and their role in mining's future. Facets of the gold industry The fate of this noble metal in recent times illustrates some of the various risks associated with the mining industry and the importance of high-quality assets, whether they be ore deposits, people or technologies. The following comments pertaining to the gold industry help place proper focus on subsequent discussions. All monetary amounts given are in US dollars. Throughout 1997, falling gold prices broke record after record: first hitting three-year lows, then a 12-year low in July and finally an 18-year low at year's end. From Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 1997, the price of gold fell by more than $2.57/g ($80/oz), or some 22%. The decline in gold-mining profitability and stock prices was even more dramatic. At the beginning of 1997, the 20 largest gold producers in North America had a market capitalization of approximately $44.5 billion. At year's end, this market cap had fallen to $26.2 billion, a reduction of 41%. The total market cap of all the world's gold companies fell from $71 billion to $46 billion, a 35% drop (Serwer, 1998). Analyses suggest that, at a spot gold price of $9.65/g ($300/oz), only one, or possibly two, North American gold-producing companies can make money when break-even or "total costs of production" are considered. While strong hedge positions mitigate this situation in the short term, clearly, this is an industry in desperate straits. For example, write-downs for North American producers in 1997 were approximately $2.5 billion. Speculative short positions in 1997 were near historical record highs and generally exceeded long positions by factors of 9:1 or 10:1. Much of this is driven by some US commercial banks, hedge fund managers and commodity speculators who can significantly move gold prices sharply over short periods of time by selling gold they do not own in the expectation they can buy it back at a lower price before they have to deliver. These signifcant short positions are likely to continue as long as central banks are willing to sell or loan gold to financial institutions that in turn make the gold available to speculators who hope to capitalize on price fluctuations. The Far East accounts for approximately 26% of the annual demand for gold. Including India, the region accounts for 43% of total demand. More than 85% of the physical demand for gold is for investment jewelry in Asia and the Middle East. This demand is extraordinarily price sensitive. The fairly recent turmoil in Asian markets and economies, combined with currency devaluations throughout the region, have made gold more expensive (30% to 50% in local currencies) for those peoples most likely to treat gold as a safe investment haven. Higher interest rates also have reduced the amount of money they have to spend on consumer goods such as jewelry. All of these recent Asian events are deflationary in nature. REE analyses of cumulate plagioclase from the PGE ore zone of the Stillwater Complex indicate that pressure fluctuations in the magma chamber acting on a single magma can- not be responsible for features such as the reappearance of Mg-rich olivine on the liquidus. The data is more consistent with a model involving multiple injection and mixing of geochemically distinct magmas. The PGE bearing sulfides of the J-M Reef are associated with such a re- appearance of olivine, indicating that the unusual location of the ore zone may be related to the addition of new magma, compositionally distinct from magmas that produced cumulates in the Ultramafic zone of the complex.

The amount of fines in run-of-mine coal has been increasing and coal quality has been deteriorating as a result of the increased use of mechanized and continuous mining methods. Removing the mineral matter and pyritic sulfur from coal prior to combustion will lower transportation costs, improve power plant performance and reduce sulfur dioxide emissions. Since physical cleaning methods can only remove individual particles of mineral matter and pyrite, it is necessary to crush and grind coal to fine sizes to separate these contaminants so they can be removed by deep cleaning processes. The increased portion of fines in run-of-mine coal together with attempts to increase the mineral matter removal efficiency have stimulated interest in fine coal cleaning technology. However, there are many problems to be solved before fine coal cleaning can be applied to power plant coals. These problems include: 1. coal cleaning plant capacity is reduced when conventional cleaning circuits are modifies to deep clean coals; 2. existing equipment and technology is not suitable for cleaning fine coal; 3. coal recovery is reduced; and 4. fine coal is difficult to dewater, dry, handle, transport and store.

"PROJECTThe “Caltanissetta” Tunnel is part of the ANAS S.p.A (National Autonomous Roads Corporation) $ 1.3 Billion Highway 640 Caltanissetta-Agrigento (Sicily, Italy) Rehabilitation Project, consisting in upgrading of 62 km (40 miles) of highway. The Italian multinational construction company Cooperativa Muratori & Cementisti di Ravenna, is the General Contractor for the design and build contract. The highway S.S. 640 starts from Porto Empedocle, to the intersection with the Motorway A 19 Catania-Palermo.The entire project, double carriageway designed for speed 70-120 km/h and maximum longitudinal slope of 4.2%, is divided into two sections. First Section: just finished and opened to traffic. Second Section: mainly involving the province of Caltanissetta, length about 28 km (18 miles), works started in 2013. This second section includes the most challenging work of all the project, the “Caltanissetta” tunnel consisting of two separate tubes, each with 3.9 km length and inside diameter of 13.50 m, in order to host 2 traffic lines and an emergency line. HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ALIGNMENT - GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGYThe plan alignment of “Caltanissetta” tunnel is formed by two tubes which are located at a minimum mutual distance of 22 m to a maximum of 63 m, with n. 9 pedestrian and n. 4 road cross passages; ventilation shafts are not provided. Overburden over portals area is about 5 m till a maximum of 120 m. Tunnel sections have variable longitudinal slope from 2.6% to 0.5%, transversal slope of about 3.5%. Right tube length is 3,992 m, left tube length is 3,877 m."

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. Canadian open-pit mines are highly mechanized and use state-of-the-art equipment and support technology. During the past few years, productivity improvements at Canadian open-pit mines have been achieved by taking advantage of larger equipment, in-pit crushing and conveying, truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. The most recent developments are related to hydraulic transportation and the application of global positioning systems (GPS). Mine planning has become computerized. Environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning. Equipment modifications are pursued with vigor to keep the equipment functioning in the hostile Canadian north. In 1997, the mining and mineral processing sector employed 370,000 Canadians, contributing $26.2 billion to Canada's gross domestic product (GDP). The value of production of the Canadian mineral industry, including coal, amounted to $19.1 billion in 1997. Gold remained Canada's leading mineral with production valued at $2.8 billion. This was followed by copper ($2 billion), coal ($1.9 billion), zinc ($1.6 billion) and nickel ($1.9 billion). [ ] Synthetic crude oil from oil-sands mining operations in Alberta represents an important part of Canada's petroleum production. In 1997, the value of synthetic oil production was $2.87 billion. Canadian oil-sands mining has contributed significant technology developments in Canada.

The Smoky Canyon Mine has recently installed a PROMPTED GAMMA NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS (PGNAA) on-line analyzer as part of a long-term advanced process control program. The on-line analyzer was adapted from a continuous dry analyzer and a large on-stream wet analyzer to a compact, multiplexed 3" slurry analyzer. The analyzation feed system utilizes a multiplexer system to accommodate up to fourteen (14) different plant process streams. The corresponding sampling system also provides for dewatering of sample streams too dilute for timely analysis. Key analysis includes, but is not limited to, phosphorus, aluminum, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. This data currently allows plant operations to be manually evaluated and controlled. Future development of a plant-wide supervisory control system will utilize the data for plant operations. This paper discusses the design, installation, and operation of the PGNAA on-line analyzer at the Smoky Canyon Mine.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) ventilation gallery was used to study methane-air flows around a continuous miner mockup with water sprays and a scrubber fan. Methane gas was released from pipes located at the face to simulate face gas emissions. Methane concentrations and air velocities were measured while varying parameters such as airflow quantity, entry width (sump or slab cut), and face ventilation configuration (blowing or exhausting curtain). Test data showed a similar pattern of methane concentrations at both low and high airflow quantities, but a difference in the distribution of methane concentrations between narrow and wide entry widths. Most tests showed that blowing face ventilation was more efficient in diluting methane than exhausting ventilation, similar to observations made in previous empty gallery studies. The patterns of airflow and methane concentrations observed in this testing can further improve the understanding of airflow in and around the CM and face, promoting effective use of face ventilation to improve the health and safety of miners. INTRODUCTION Attaining an accurate understanding of airflow distribution at the continuous miner face is instrumental in maintaining a safe mining environment. US mining regulations require that sufficient airflow must be directed to the deepest penetration of the face and render harmless contaminant gases, as verified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Currently, continuous miner face air readings can be taken in the last open crosscut and at the inby end of the curtain mouth. By measuring adequate airflow in a pre-determined area it is accepted that a sufficient quantity of that air exists to sweep the face of harmful dust and gasses. Unfortunately, due to the location inaccessibility, precise face velocity readings cannot be measured in situ. Face velocities may be estimated through computer-simulated programs based on laboratory models. Improving upon previous empty gallery testing and to more effectively determine representative face methane readings, a mockup of a continuous miner with water sprays and a scrubber fan was used in the current study to further refine face airflow conditions that would be closer to actual mining conditions."

The Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina is increasing the automation level of their processing plant in order to improve operational stability. One step towards this goal is the application of a Digital Twin concept to provide Virtual Instruments. Haile has engaged ANDRITZ to implement Virtual Instruments at their grinding area hydrocyclones and at their tailing thickener underflow pump. These virtual instruments provide density values in a traditionally difficult location for reliable slurry density measurement. The Digital Twin is a first principles IDEAS1 ™ simulation model, connected in real time to the control system. Results have been promising, with the virtual instrument values matching the physical instrument under normal operating conditions, and showing better prediction under upset conditions. Haile plans to use the virtual instruments as optional process control parameters. INTRODUCTION OceanaGold’s Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, about 50 miles southeast of Charlotte, North Carolina. This location was first mined in 1827, and has produced gold through several operating periods since then, including a heap leaching operation from 1985 through 1992. In October, 2015, OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals, the previous owner of the Haile Operation. The current operation began in 2017 as an open pit mine with additional underground resources. The nameplate throughput is 6,350 tpd ore, and 2017 production was 118k oz gold, with 140 to 155k oz gold expected in 2018. Proven and Probable reserves exceed 3 Moz. The process, as shown in Figure 1, includes a primary jaw crusher, comminution with a Semi-Autonomous Grinding (SAG) mill and ball mill circuit, flash flotation, rougher flotation, regrinding, pre-aeration, carbon in leach (CIL) leaching, carbon elution and regeneration, cyanide recovery, electrowinning and refining. The Haile Operation’s inaugural gold pour took place January 20, 2017. Mine life is expected through at least the year 2030. Based partially on prior experience of some key OceanaGold personnel with automation services from ANDRITZ on other projects, OceanaGold decided to include ANDRITZ on the Haile project. The scope of these services for Haile included design and supply of the process control application software, an ANDRITZ dynamic process simulator for operator training, and ANDRITZ Advanced Control Expert (ACE) ®2 systems for the SAG mill, ball mill, and rougher flotation areas. Since startup, ANDRITZ has continued to provide services for the site, particularly related to PLC and HMI equipment, programming and support, ACE system expansion, and the implementation of Virtual Instrumentation. The implementation of this new Virtual Instrumentation technology at Haile is consistent with Haile goals: increased automation, a change in the role of the operator from interactor to monitor, and improved stability by removing human error.

Dwindling near-surface mineral reserves emphasize the need for the development of exploration techniques capable of greater depth penetration; geochemical techniques tradition- ally have been restricted to the search for deposits having at least a sub-outcrop expression. Rock geochemical techniques developed in Cyprus in 1967-1968 recognized anomalous conditions in volcanic rocks up to one mile from an ore de- posit. Research by the Exploration Geochemistry Group at the University of New Brunswick has shown that some massive sulphide deposits in New Brunswick have well-defined halos of major, minor, and trace elements in the host rocks extending up to 1,200 metres (4,000 feet) laterally along the same stratigraphic horizon, and up to 450 metres (1,500 feet) vertically in hanging wall rocks which apparently post-date mineralization; well-defined halos have also been found in foot- wall rocks. Some of these halos are readily identified as individual elements or as element pairs; others are so subtle as to be recognizable only through computer-calculated multivariate analysis. Research continues to extend the dimension of rock geochemical halos for regional exploration and for identification of more restrictive anomalous conditions which may closely define the location and extent of buried sulphide deposits.

A regional investigation to find large supplies of potable ground water was carried out at elevations exceeding 12,000 feet above sea level on the Bolivian Altiplano. The program marked the first application of modern ground water search and development technology in the region, and ended a history of unsuccessful exploration efforts to locate important supplies of fresh water from underground sources. Oruro, a population center of 90,000 inhabitants, and its primary supporting industry - mining, both derived major direct benefit from the results of this program.

The movement to reclaim abandoned mine sites has gained momentum as federal, state, and private organizations have increased their commitment and resources to tackle mutual, and often controversial, problems of health and safety. Numerous interorganizational agreements have been implemented to promote cooperation in the characterization of mine site hazards, development of mutually acceptable plans of remediation, and sharing of actual cleanup requirements. Working through these partnerships, the federal land management agencies have begun to focus on abandoned mine reclamation in selected, priority watersheds and other drainage basins. Although there are major difficulties to overcome, significant progress continues to be made.

The Eskay Creek Mine, a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia started operations in late 1994. For the first three years of operation, ore was crushed to minus 2 inch; blended to satisfy smelter terms and direct shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Before commencing the above operations, preliminary evaluations had indicated that an extremely complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. Subsequently markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations, at a nominal production rate of 300 tonnes per day, were commenced. Exploration diamond drilling in 1995 and 1996 discovered additional lower grade mineralized zones, which are less economic or uneconomic as direct shipping ore. Testwork demonstrated that these lower grade zones could be upgraded to marketable concentrates in a simple flotation mill. The mill was built in 1997 and has been in operation since late 1997. The mining rate now has increased to 400 tonnes per day including 250 tonnes per day of the direct shipping ore and ISO tonnes per day of the mill ore. Prime Resources Group Inc. wholly owns the Eskay Creek Mine. Homestake Canada Inc. owns 50.6% of Prime's shares and manages and operates the mine on Prime's behalf. This paper discusses the mining and milling operations as well as ore shipment and smelter contracts' administration.
