Five kaolin crudes from the state of Georgia in the U.S. were investigated for processability with chemically enhanced magnetic separation (CEMS) technologies developed by Cytec. The technologies used magnetic reagent alone or in conjunction with specialty chemicals to selectively agglomerate and magnetize the desired minerals (impurities) to be removed by the conventional magnetic separation equipment. All crudes indicated treatability using CEMS. Results indicated that CEMS technology could be applied to different kaolin crudes to obtain a product with titanium impurities less than 0.6% TiO2 from individual crudes. The features and benefits of the technologies were also reviewed.

Refractory sulfide flotation or gravity gold concentrates are coated onto a sized support matrix and placed in a heap configuration for biooxidation. The surface coating is typically less than 0.05 in. thick and the support matrix is preferably composed of 0.375 to 0.75 in. diameter material. The exposed thin coating of sulfides reduces biooxidation rate limitations due to oxygen mass transfer. The large spaces between matrix particles reduce resistance to fluid percolation and aeration in the heap. The capital and operating costs for this biooxidation configuration are significantly less than for concentrate biooxidation in stirred tanks. After 30 to 90 days of biooxidation, sub- sequent gold recoveries exceed those seen in whole ore heap biooxidation and are comparable to recoveries obtained from stirred tank biooxidation processes. Results from laboratory and pilot testing indicate that this technology is a viable alternative for pretreating sulfide refractory gold ores.

Separation and identification of minerals composing the Tunisian silica sands have been conducted by acid etching and hot filtration/sedimentation (HFS) without affecting the quartz component. It was found that the hot acid etching process is an effective method to separate quartz and clay minerals in the silica sand. The SEM micrographs of the silica sand show rough surface and some cracks with irregular shapes. The surface becomes clean and smooth after acid etching process. After chemical dissolution, the clay minerals were recovered by hot filtration following by sedimentation at low temperature. FT-IR, EDS maps, and secondary electron (SE) analyses of separated clay minerals reveal the presence of Fe2O3, montmorillonite, and kaolinite minerals. The LIBS analysis of clay minerals shows the presence of Al, Fe, Ca, Al, and Mg. The sequential etching process can be introduced in the purification methods as an effective way to separate quartz from clay minerals.

A combined heavy medium-flotation process which incorporates the advantages of two widely employed cleaning methods, namely, heavy medium separation and flotation was used to achieve improved separation of coal from ash at fine sizes and to recover the heavy medium as a substantially recyclable product. The investigation was carried out in two successive phases. In the first phase, tests were performed to deter-mine the effect of different variables such as the medium density, flotation time, magnetite type, etc. on the efficiency of the process using in-plant samples from Homer City Coal Preparation Plant. In the second phase, the optimum conditions determined in the first phase were employed to determine the applicability of the process to a few Central Pennsylvania coals. It was observed that the process was very effective in recovering the magnetite. In most of the cases investigated, the magnetite was separated from the non-magnetic material at approximate-1 to 99 % recovery with a grade ranging from 95 to 99 %. The grade of magnetite decreased with increase in ash content of coal and with decrease in size of magnetite.

The intent of this paper is to try to answer the complex question: "How much grinding capacity should be designed into a new mining - milling project?" Much work has been devoted to the technical aspects of grinding, the "how" of grinding. But, in the writers' opinion, the economically important subject of optimizing grinding capacity in mill design has not received the attention it deserves, at least not in published literature. For the purpose of this paper it is necessary to distinguish clearly between optimizing operation and optimizing design. Optimizing operation involves making the best use of the available plant and equipment. Much excellent work has been done and is being done in this area. In operation, one can make tradeoffs of production rate and recovery, or recovery and grade, to maximize profits. However, this must be done within the limitations imposed in the design stage. Flexibility is limited by the existing plant. In project design, on the other hand., there are no preexisting physical limitations except as imposed by nature itself; the planners and designers have considerable latitude in their efforts to optimize the overall project. They have complete control over a large number of important design variables from the mine to the finished product. The grinding process design is one of these variables. It not only determines the capital cost charges for grinding and the maximum grinding capacity that operating management will have to work with, but also determines the range of capability of the auxiliary equipment, which fixes the degree of flexibility possible in operation. This paper is concerned with optimizing design rather than operation. The terms "optimum" and "optimize" are sometimes used in a technical sense in connection with grinding, recovery or grade. In this paper, these terms are used only in the economic sense. In this age of working large deposits of ever lower grade ores, it is in¬creasingly essential to design projects and plants for optimum economics, based on the most applicable economic. criteria. Since grinding represents a large part of both capital and operating cost of the project, and largely determines percentage recovery of metal, it should be included as one of the factors in optimizing the project design. This paper is written primarily with reference to medium to large copper concentrators employing conventional wet grinding. However, the principles involved should be applicable to other ores and other methods of grinding.

"It was possible to beneficiate a low-grade iron ore fines sample from Bellary-Hospet, Karnataka, India assaying 56% Fe, 9.1% SiO2 and 5.2% Al2O3 and produce two concentrates, namely, a sinter-grade fines concentrate (43.7% by weight), assaying 63.6% Fe, 2.6% SiO2 and 1.7% Al2O3, and a pellet-grade concentrate (30.7% by weight) assaying 64.7% Fe, 2.9% SiO2 and 1.7%Al2O3. Rejects (25.6% by weight) assayed 32.5% Fe, 27.9% SiO2 and 15.4% Al2O3. The mineralogical characterization indicated that the sample consisted of 69.5% ironbearing minerals (56% hematite, 7.5% martite and 6% goethite-limonite), 12.5% quartz and 15.2% clay, and the rest were minor minerals. Liberation size was found to be in the size range of 25 to 100 µm. The process flow sheet consists of jigs, spirals, grinding and low- and high-intensity magnetic separation of the deslimed feed. IntroductionJSW Steel Ltd is a 10-Mt/a integrated steel plant. To produce 10 Mt/a hot metal requires nearly 16 to 20 Mt/a iron ore fines. The fast depletion of highgrade iron ore fines, increased industrial demand and an increase in iron ore prices have necessitated the exploitation and use of low-grade iron ore fines in the steel-making process after beneficiation. Thus, the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores by removing the associated gangue minerals and enhancing their grade is essential. The use of these iron ore fines in sinter and pellet making has prompted the undertaking of systematic studies on low-grade iron ores.Finely disseminated low-grade iron ores with siliceous impurities have been upgraded by gravity, magnetic and flotation-based processes (Burt, 1994; Svoboda, 1987; Houot, 1983). The processing of low-grade Indian hematite ore containing high levels of alumina-bearing minerals as impurities present separation challenges and pose special problems in martite and magnetite, in association with quartz and clay as the gangue-forming minerals. Alumina is mainly contributed by clay (kaolinite, montmorillonite, illite, alunite), lateritic material and gibbsite; some alumina occurs as solids in iron oxide minerals, namely, goethite and limonite. When I reached Warren after the "de luxe" South American expedition I had little idea what was in store for me. From the large check Thayer had handed me just before I left New York I was pretty sure the future would be good, and that before long it would involve Anaconda. Evidently, Mr. Thayer had left it to Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway to work out the details The next morning Greenway asked me to come to his office and told me that he and Dr. Ricketts had discussed the question and that Anaconda would make me an offer I could not refuse. They proposed to pay me almost $1000 a month, more than twice my current salary. They had agreed that I should stay with Calumet and Arizona for the rest of the year to help with Bisbee development and anything I could to assist with the New Cornelia plans and construction Of course I could not turn down such a flattering offer, as I had about reached the limit of advancement with a much smaller company in anything save a high executive job, and it would be a long time before I could be ready to change from exploration and geology to operating. The technology employed in the processing of nickel- and cobalt¬bearing ores is a continually developing process for utilizing the natu¬ral resources available at a given time. Most of the nickel-bearing ores of commercial importance fall under the category of sulfide or lateritic ores. While the occurrences of both types of ore have been known for over a century, until 1960 sulfide ores largely from Cana¬dian mines have constituted the chief source of production for com¬mercial nickel in the Free World. Sulfide ores are readily amenable to some physical means of concentration, but the lateritic ores are not readily concentrated, and to compete economically with the sulfide ores only the high-grade garnierite ores (a type of lateritic ore) found in New Caledonia were processed to any great extent up to the time of World War II. Around 1960, a gradual shift in emphasis towards latetitic ores as a commercial source of nickel became evident. See Fig. 1. New discoveries of sulfide ores, usually located underground, had not kept pace with the steadily increasing demand for nickel. The lateritic ores, found near the surface of the earth, could be readily surveyed and mined. Lower cost processes were being developed for the extrac¬tion of nickel from lateritic ores and for a time it appeared that, based on pre-OPEC economics, the lower grade lateritic ores-down to 1.2% nickel-could satisfy an increasing share of the world demand for nickel. The sharp increase in the price of crude oil in the 1970s, however, slapped an economic damper on the lateritic ores. Processes for treat¬ing lateritic ores consume large amounts of energy; as the nickel industry entered its deep recessionary period in 1981-83, nickel pro¬duction from lateritic ores became less and less profitable than from sulfide ores. At the same time, new sulfide ores were discovered and brought into production, notably in Australia and South Africa. The chapters in Section 17 were prepared in 1973. Recent improvements in mineral dressing techniques since then include Inco's pyrrhotite separation process which can remove additional pyrrhotite from nickel concentrates, resulting in reduced sulfur dioxide emission from the Sudbury smelter, by some 25%. The chapters in this section dealing with nickel are grouped in line with the two broad categories of nickel ores. Starting with the description of nickel and cobalt ores in Chapter 2, Chapter 3 deals with the processing of sulfide ores, and Chapter 4 deals largely with lateritic ores. The intermediate steps to produce a suitable feed for extraction plants and refineries are similar in principle within the same categories, although dissimilar between sulfide and lateritic ores. Thus Inco in Canada employs flotation and so does Western Mining Corp. in Australia, although Inco's plants were started before World War II, and that of Western Mining only recently in the late 1960s. Treatment subsequent to the ore dressing step, however, shows some interesting differences. 25.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION The word "purchase" means "to obtain by paying money or its equivalent; to buy for a price." This definition is all too simple to properly describe the word "purchase." One should consider the basic objectives of purchasing-to procure the right material, of the right quality, in the right quantity, at the right time, from the right source at the right price. Here it should be noted that in purchasing it is recognized that the best quality or grade of materials may be the only grade to purchase for a specific job. However. there are other jobs where the medium, standard or poor grade of materials is the right quality, as the lesser grade will perform adequately. In some companies the purchasing department makes the decision as to the right quality, while in others this function is shared with other departments. Years ago in business the owners controlled the purchase of required materials and services by performing the task themselves. The owners obtained the type materials and services they needed and paid the price demanded. This function was performed along with all the other duties requisite to the owner of a business, namely, clerical, hiring and firing of personnel, financial management, etc. As companies grew in size, clerical duties were assigned to other personnel and the owner usually retained the purchasing authority. This same division exists today in many small companies. However, in the larger companies, the purchasing function has been assigned to a separate department. Importance of the Purchasing Function-The larger the company the greater the need for a separate department to perform the purchasing function. Today the purchasing agent for most larger progressive companies has policy-making authority. Therefore, it is reasonable for him to report to the president or vice president of his company. Studies of several hundred companies show the purchasing department head reporting to top management 87.5% of the time. This fact in itself is indicative of the importance of recognizing that effective purchasing requires a department staffed with specialists in the field of procurement with knowledge and experience sufficient to perform in today's complicated business atmosphere. In the manufacturing field it is a common axiom that usually half of the company's dollar expenditures are for materials. If a purchasing department functions properly and the right product or service is purchased and a savings accomplished, the contribution to the net profit of the company is much greater, as opposed to sale dollars, where only a small portion is carried forward to net profit. Thus, the importance of the purchasing department and the contribution it can make to the success of the company are obvious. 25.1.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION 1. In 1986 the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) embarked on a major research effort to develop technology that can substantially reduce worker exposure to face hazards simply by relocating the equipment operators to an area of relative safety. This reduced exposure mining system (REMS) research effort enhances the USBM ongoing health and safety research efforts to reduce and control dust and noise and to reduce accidents through training and better mining practices. This paper reports progress of the research that is developing and will demonstrate the technologies required for the computer-assisted tele-remote operation of continuous mining machines, haulage systems, and roof bolting machines.

Spontaneous combustion fires in deep metal mines, through relatively infrequent, are nonetheless cause for considerable concern because they pose a direct threat to the safety of miners and are quite disruptive to mine operations. They often occur in remote, inactive, or abandoned sectors of a mine where access for firefighting is difficult or impossible. Over half of all noncoal mine fires that last more than 24 hours are caused by spontaneous combustion. The most common means of fire control for spontaneous combustion fires is sealing and/or Flooding the affected zone. This process is never easy, but it is made especially difficult (and hazardous) if the fire grows in size and intensity to the point where underground fire- fighting crews must wear self-contained breathing apparatus owing to mine air contamination. The Bureau of Mines has developed and in-mine tested a mineworthy fire detection system capable of sensing the earliest traces of spontaneous combustion, thus enabling mine personnel to initiate fire control operations before hazardous atmospheres are created. This paper discusses system design within the context of the harsh mine environment, and describes laboratory and in-mine performance tests of prototype equipment.

This paper is an account of exploration for bauxite in the Amazon Basin, Brazil, and particularly of the discovery, exploration and development by Alcan of the Trombetas deposit so a general account of the Trombetas Project has already been published in E/MJ (Anon. 1975) to which the reader is referred for details on owner-ship, infrastructure and construction as well as the proposal for mining and treating the bauxite. It is impossible to consider the Trombetas deposits in isolation. A regional account of bauxite in and around the Guyana Shield and the northern portion of the Brazilian Shield is included and it is suggested that these deposits all formed during Tertiary time under similar conditions.

"The industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)—a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems—has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. NIOSH researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify challenges of and potential solutions for transferability of IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40% of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system based on low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards, to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine, and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communications and tracking infrastructure. INTRODUCTION The nation’s approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communications with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there currently exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is the network of physical objects or ""things"" embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator, and/or other connected devices [1, 2]. It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: internet and things. The first one pushes towards a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional internet can be viewed as an internet of computers —i.e., “things” connected to the internet are computers only. IoT “extends” the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in our daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected via the internet, and thus creates a bridge between the virtual word and the physical world."

The lack of progress in controlling pulmonary diseases such as pneumoconiosis cases in recent years necessitates additional studies on dust generation and the characterization of airborne dust. Studies are underway by a NIOSH-sponsored project to observe the characteristics of the dust generated by pick cutters under various wear levels. This research performed a full-scale linear-cutting-test matrix on eight coal samples with various bit penetrations, spacing, and wear conditions. The specific energy and resulting PSD (particle size distribution) of airborne dust and material left at the cutting surface were measured and analyzed. The dust concentration was determined using the NMAM (NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods) 0600 method. For fines, the PSD was characterized using Laser Diffraction, measuring percent channel and aerodynamic diameter, while Imagej, a virtual sieving application, was used for larger particles. The results show that for a new bit, as the cutting depth and spacing increase, the specific energy and dust generation decrease. The size and shape of the dust particles have been analyzed, and the observed trends are discussed in this paper.

My reaction when first asked to present this paper was; "What could I possibly say that would hold the audience?s attention for 15 minutes? What could I offer that anyone familiar with the Nevada Barite Industry wouldn't already know?" Well, quite frankly I can't. The industry has certainly been anything but exciting for the past 10 years and, in fact, quite depressing. The challenge, for those few of us left in it, has been to keep it alive. At times it has felt like a doctor must feel with a terminally ill patient. All I can do is recap the past ten years, review the present state of the industry, and offer a few personal opinions and observations as to where I think we are headed.

The emerging importance of pneumatic conveying systems for bulk materials is becoming recognized by more persons responsible for materials management as consultants, at the corporate level and at the plant level. They have learned that the economic advantages of a pneumatic system are frequently decisive when compared to alternate methods. Included in these advantages are relative simplicity, ease of installation, flexibility, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, safety and ease of automation to the degree desired. In general, installed costs favor a pneumatic system when compared to competing mechanical systems if the transporting distances are long or to and from many points. In addition, supplemental use such as cooling, heating, or drying may supply the incremental value required to justify its selection. (1). The main disadvantages of a pneumatic system is the greater horsepower required per unit weight of material conveyed and material limits in abrasiveness and density. In addition, there is a tendency to increase material breakage at changes of direction and at any obstruction such as the imperfect butting of one, piece of pipe to another in the conveying line. Classification of the material at the discharge may also cause problems in dusting and segregation. Materials weighing less than 4 pounds per cubic foot tend to cause feeding and collecting problems although they can be conveyed easily. Material between 4 and 20 pounds per cubic foot can be handled with less problems but flow rate is hard to predict. The 20 to 60 pounds per cubic foot range offers best results; whereas, over 60 pounds per cubic foot, materials tend to drop out of the air stream and settle in the pipe line unless careful provisions are made to prevent it. The International Tunneling Association (ITA) Working Group (WG) 22 “Information Modelling in Tunneling” has developed a guideline for the implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) concepts for Bored Tunneling Projects. The guideline primarily covers the use of BIM during the conceptual and delivery phases of a project. It provides Owners with an introduction to BIM, an overview of the current capabilities of BIM, and a guide for implementation for a Bored Tunnel. The document will be officially published at the World Tunnel Congress (WTC) in Copenhagen in 2022. This paper describes the need for the guideline and provides a preview of its contents.

"INTRODUCTION Brutally honest mining executives will tell you that “safety is job #1 but.. dollars are also extremely important”. When economic times are tough, as they are now in mining, it can feel like you need to choose between safety and cost control. Leading edge companies know that it is excellence at both that provides the best performance. FLUID POWER SYSTEMS Fluid power systems are ubiquitous in mining – longwall systems, continuous miners, drills, haul trucks and excavators, etc. And fluid power systems are getting more powerful and using higher pressures to move greater volumes and achieve higher productivity. Average operating pressures in mobile equipment has been rising to 450 bar (6,500 psi) over the last decade. With increased system pressure comes ever increasing levels of stored energy. Stored energy that, if released in an uncontrolled fashion, can do tremendous harm to people and things.Fluid power systems are composed of pipe, flexible hoses, pumps, valves and actuators. They are filled with fluid (mineral oil or fire-resistant) to transmit power to where it’s needed for performing work. With time and use fittings can loosen, component performance diminishes and hoses wear and tear. In hostile environments, like coal mining, hydraulic hoses can fail in as little as 2 years according to DGUV (umbrella association of German Accident Insurers), maybe sooner in some particularly challenging environments. FLUID POWER SYSTEM SAFETY While appearing simple and benign on the surface, fluid power systems, particularly such systems on mobile equipment, have many potential hazards. Hazards that most workers aren’t aware of – particularly young, new hires. And those hazards that can quickly turn deadly. During the past couple of years, including at last year’s SME Conference, I talked to a wide variety of mining people about high pressure fluid injection injuries. Some people, often with little or no field experience, never heard of it. But, people with mine operations / maintenance experience were almost always aware of such injuries.Some had even seen it happen right in front of them. But most claimed it didn’t happen all that often. It just wasn’t seen as a problem!"
