Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) has an extensive history with tunnel boring machines (TBM) at the Stillwater and East Boulder underground PGM mines in Montana. The most recent TBM used is for the Blitz Project, where a 5.5m (18ft) diameter main beam unit, commissioned in Q3 2012, is being utilized to drive a 6,975m (22,500 ft) ventilation and haulage level East of the Stillwater Mine for the Blitz expansion project. The assembly/commissioning of the TBM, institution of the planned diamond drilling program, application of ground control systems, and the current tunneling metrics will be covered.

DOUG HALBE: I've decided that we're going to change tactics here and we're going to be nice to people from now on. [Co-chair makes gesture of intense disbelief; laughter] I've also decided who's not going to be a co-chair next year. [laughter] We thought we'd get a couple of experts for our next presentation: some people with a lot of experience. We've asked them to tell us some of the things that all of you operators out there might be able to apply immediately to your plant. Our next two speakers have a tremendous amount of experience, and I think you'll find what they're going to say is highly pertinent to most plants. I looked through their paper and found some things that I could have used in the plants I operated in the past. Our first speaker is Terry McNulty. A lot of you know Terry. He was with Anaconda for a number of years as director of research. He then was president of Hazen Research. I'm going to continue with our new custom of saying nice things. Terry is the guy that I call when I don't know something, and he's always got the answer. SPEAKER: Who do you work for, Doug? I won't say anything deprecatory about him, but I would have to comment that the observations made by earlier speakers have been far too generous. The unique application of a large walking dragline in the mountains of southern West Virginia was developed and implemented by Hobet Mining, Inc. Hobet is an independent operating subsidiary of Ashland Coal and is headquartered at the No. 21 Mine in Boone County, West Virginia, near Danville. Hobet also operates the 07 Mine located in Logan County, West Virginia, near Holden. Both mines are similar in equipment and manpower used; both produce over 2,000,000 tons of clean coal annually. Each site encompasses large, contiguous properties with access to rail service. The larger of the two is the Boone County property; it totals nearly 40,000 acres and has ample reserves. In 1977, Hobet was in the process of constructing a preparation plant (Beth Station) at its 21 Mine site with a capacity for two million tons. One of the first orders of business was to design a mine plan that would provide production for the capacity of the plant. Coal production would come from a more than adequate reserve base using the most economical mining methods available. Hobet looked at different deep and surface mining methods to use in order to develop the property; ultimately, it was determined that the mountaintop removal method with the use of a large dragline was the most economical way to develop reserve. Prior to this time surface mining in mountainous Southern West Virginia was generally done by contour mining and/or augering techniques.

"Refuge alternatives (RA) provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. RA manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and the management of heat that results from the RA occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide generation that is representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current US coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in an RA. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 115 W to 135 W, depending on RA occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 LO2/h/person (0.81 ft3/h/person) and 20 LCO2/h/person (0.71 ft3/h/person), which means the margin of safety is 50% or more when compared to the MSHA requirements. INTRODUCTION Refuge alternatives (RAs) provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for the supply of oxygen, the removal of carbon dioxide, and the management of heat that results from the occupants and the mechanical/chemical systems in the RA [1]. These MSHA requirements were based on a standard 70 kg (168 lb) male with an assumed allocation of activity of 80% rest and 20% moderate activity level [2]. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the metabolic heat generation and oxygen and carbon dioxide requirements of miners in an RA based on actual miner size and more realistic RA activity levels based on current RA designs. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and heat generation. To achieve this, researchers took the following steps to estimate the metabolic demands and the associated heat generation, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide production. 1. Characterized the anthropometric characteristics of the miner population. 2. Described the metabolic rate profile of RA occupants. 3. Characterized the maintenance demands of RAs. 4. Summarized oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal volumes. ANTHROPOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF MINERS The weight, height, and age distributions of the adult male populations are summarized in Table 1. For each data set, the reported mean and standard deviation are provided. The 95th percentile (%ile) value for height and weight for each population was the mean plus 1.64 times the standard deviation."

For the first time in many years, the Liebherr Group chose to host its annual conference for the international construction trade press in the United States. The reason for the move is simple ? mining. Like other large corporations, especially those in the construction fields, Liebherr felt the effects of the global economic crisis that began in 2008. The slowdown in the housing market was especially hard on Liebherr?s mobile crane and earth moving divisions. The mining division, however, while affected by crashing commodity prices that led to cancelled orders and the loss of financing for some customers, was not battered as badly as the other divisions. And now, with the price of commodities once again on the rise, it seems that it will be Liebherr?s largest machines that lead the family-owned company to better days. ?We can report that our generally optimistic view during the crisis has proved adequate,? said Joachim Janka, president of Liebherr mining equipment, at the conference in Williamsburg, VA, just down the road from the company?s mining truck division global headquarters in Newport News, VA. ?Since the third quarter of 2009, our mining equipment activities have been recording once more a strong and steady demand. This has already yielded a substantial increase in market shares for our product lines of large mining shovels as well as for mining trucks.?

Shortly after Asarco Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division from Kennecott in 1986, the company began an expansion program to increase copper production. The Bechtel Corp. oversaw engineering procurement and construction management for a new in-pit crusher, overland conveyor system and concentrator facility. Construction started in May 1990 on these facets of the expansion project. The concentrator was commissioned in February 1992. The Ray concentrator uses a single-line, semiautogenous grinding circuit (SAG) with a design through¬put of 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd). In the early 1960s, Kennecott conducted pilot plant grind tests of Ray mine ores to determine their amenability to SAG and autogenous grinding methods. Those tests, though, were not followed up. During 1973 and 1982, Kennecott conducted additional pilot testing on some of the softer ore types. In 1989, Asarco ran a final series of SAG pilot grinding tests at Lakefield Research, which became the basis of the new Ray concentrator grinding circuit. Even though pilot test work demonstrated that some of the Ray ores gave satisfactory results during the autogenous grinding tests, the SAG option was selected for the primary comminution device. Due to the wide range of mineralogies encountered in the Ray ore body, selective mining and blending of these ores would be required to achieve the necessary production efficiencies and throughput rates using an autogenous grinding circuit.

The present work describes an investigation of a hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of mercury from spent silver oxide button cells. The cell paste was leached in nitric acid to solubilize silver, mercury and zinc. The optimum leaching conditions, in which mercury is entirely converted to Hg2+ ions and, therefore, does not coprecipitate with silver chloride during treatment with potassium chloride solution, were 1.0 M HNO3, 45° C, 1 hour and 200 rpm. After the silver was removed from the solution, mercury was cemented out with zinc powder with an efficiency greater than 99%. In the cementation experiments, the amount of zinc powder, shaking rate, temperature and solution pH were investigated in detail. The mercury recovery (%) increased as the amounts of zinc powder and the temperature were increased. Zinc hydroxide was precipitated from the waste solution by the addition of sodium hydroxide. The Zn(OH)2 precipitate was then converted to zinc oxide. The proposed process is proven to be simple, straightforward and environmentally friendly.

"To explore blast furnace slag as a secondary resource for rare earth elements (REEs), blast furnace slag containing lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), erbium (Er) and neodymium (Nd) in concentrations of 17, 16, 4 and 44 ppm, respectively, was processed with sulfuric acid while optimizing the parameters of acid concentration, temperature and pulp density. The experiments showed that recovery rates of 92, 36, 35 and 52 percent for La, Ce, Nd and Er, respectively, were achieved at 1 to 5 weight/volume (w/v) percent pulp density using particles smaller than 250 µm and treating with 1 M sulfuric acid for one hour at room temperature. Raising the temperature to 95 °C promoted the dissolutions of Ce and Nd to 89 and 84 percent, respectively, for the same 1 M acid concentration and one-hour duration at 5 w/v percent pulp density. Cyanex 923 was preferred over Cyanex 301 for the purification of REEs from leach liquor. In another route, the leach liquor was subjected to precipitation with 0.5 to 1 M oxalic acid, resulting in a product with 4 to 5 percent concentration of REEs.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) are important materials in numerous high-technology applications, but they have high supply risk, giving rise to the study of new sources. The recycling of REEs has been well researched, especially on a small scale, but has not been widely implemented. Less than 1 percent of REEs were recycled in 2011 (Binnemans et al., 2013). REEs occur in a large number of minerals in oxidic compounds, such as oxides, carbonates, phosphates and silicates, and are present as mixtures at 10 to 300 mg/kg concentrations in many rock formations, such as basalts, granites, gneisses, shales and silicate rocks. The most abundant REE in the Earth’s crust is cerium (Ce), at a concentration of 20 to 70 mg/kg, followed by neodymium (Nd) and lanthanum (La), with heavier REEs being less abundant (Binnemans et al., 2013). Comminution is an integral part of the mineral extraction process. However, the influence of the comminution method (ball and rod mills) on silica and magnetite particle shapes has not been substantially investigated. Shape parameters for fractions of -250+212, -150+125, and -106+75 μm sizes were examined utilizing a scanning electron microscope and a Clemex vision PE image analysis system. The silica particles displayed higher elongation and flatness parameter values for rod mill products, but roundness and relative width parameter values of rod mill products are less than that of the ball mill products. Magnetite particle elongation and flatness parameter values of ball mill products in fraction sizes of -250+212 and -106+75 μm are larger than rod mill products, but roundness and relative width parameter values of ball mill products are smaller than rod-mill products, but for the -150+125 μm size range the result is converse. Furthermore, particle elongation and flatness increased with decreasing particle sizes of silica, whereas, roundness and relative width decreased for both Ball and Rod Mills. In case of magnetite, ball mill products displayed an increase of flatness and particle elongations with decreasing particle sizes but flatness increased and roundness and relative width decreased. Similarly for rod mills, magnetite fractions of -150+125 μm were found to have the largest values of elongation and flatness. INTRODUCTION Comminution alters the size and shape, causes lattice distortion, changes chemical composition, surface area, surface-free energy, and polymorphic transformation of all materials. The quantity and quality of such changes depend on specifications of the material feedstock, the type of mill being utilized, the specific energy input, ambient temperature, and environmental pressure [1]. The shape difference between the milled products depends on different grinding mechanisms and the respective breakage principles that these mechanisms depend on [2, 3]. With decreasing particle sizes, the nature of the particle surface become crucial [1]. The influence of the breakage technique has been found to be non-trivial and heavily dependent on the type of grinding mill used for particle size reduction [4]. Shape is an important industrial parameter for predicting particle behavior in downstream processes. The shape parameter affects the way particles burn, compact, are recovered, flow in fluids, sinter, float, agglomerate, fluidize, interact with pulmonary tissue, cut, abrade, react with chemicals, form structural materials, and retain and permit fluids to flow [5, 6]. The distribution of particle sizes and shapes are important for mining, civil and chemical, pharmaceutical, and various other industries with interest in the population modeling of atmospheric dusts, smoke, and grit [1, 3, 6]. The shape parameter not only affects the chemical, physical, surface properties of particles but is also important for downstream processes [5, 6]. Image analysis has been found to provide detailed information about size and shape of the particles and can be used for the control of product quality [4].

One of the most important applications of material handling engineering technology occurs in iron ore pelletizing plants. Although the total installed value of material handling systems in such plants, as well as in many other modern process plants, is a relatively small percentage of the value of the plants (5 to 10% perhaps), their significance is considerable. Indeed this significance equals that of the more expensive process equipment in the plant, since the failure of any component of any system causes, shutdown of the entire plant. It is because of this increased consequence of failure that design criteria for process plants are more conservative than for conventional material handling applications. A second unique characteristic of material handling technology applied to process plants in general is the variety of materials being handled and the wide range of problems this variety presents. One extreme encountered is the stickiness of filter cake. Here the entire design effort is aimed at keeping the material flowing through transfer points and preventing it from building up on components. Another extreme is the conveying of fired pellets - hard spheres with a very flat angle of repose and abrasive characteristics severe enough to make conventional wear plate materials impractical.

The liquid membrane separation process was first patented in 1968 for separating hydrocarbons.(1-4) This stimulated many researchers to join in the area of separating organic compounds. l Since then, its applications have been extended to the removal of contaminants from waste water,(12-33) encapsulation of enzymes and/or microorganisms for reaction and/or separation, (24-28) oxygenation of blood (artificial lung),(19) removal of toxins from blood (artificial kidney)(26,20) and metal extraction.(31-63) This paper discusses the possible process schemes for using liquid membranes to separate and concentrate copper ion from its acidic leaching solution.

The potash mine and refinery of AMAX Chemical Corporation is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad on the north end of the potash producing areas. This property was developed between 1949-1952 and production of muriate began in August 1952. Two shafts, located 400 feet apart, were sunk to the ore zone 900 feet below the surface. A 15-foot diameter ore hoisting shaft equipped with a 1000-ton ore pocket, crusher and automatic skip loading equipment plus a 20-foot diameter service shaft with a curtain wall for exhausting air were provided. Sylvinite production to date has been from the first ore zone, stratigraphically, the lowest of ten identified mineralized zones in the salt section. This first ore zone has been the top producer of Muriate of Potash over the years. In our area we do have some very marginal mineralization in the third ore zone some 35 feet above the first. We have not mined from this seam as yet but we are investigating the economics very closely with access slopes and an experimental mining panel. Our ore seam is generally flat lying but does have local gentle rolling with grades from 2% to 5%. The mine was designed and developed from the beginning with conventional mining practices and rail haulage from the mining section to the ore pocket. As mining progressed in the early years, production increased from less than one million tons annually to a maximum of 3,935,000 tons in 1964. Efficiency also kept pace with the increasing production and continually improved until the efficiency of the production crews reached an average of 100.3 tons per manshift in 1964.

Longwall mining technological improvements have provided significant increases in productivity over the last 15 years. Longwall productivity is anticipated to continue to escalate with expanded application of automated equipment. Automation technology that will likely be adopted over the next 5 years is memory cut with shearer initiation of shield movement supervised by a couple of face workers. Operations using this technology will most likely relocate many production workers from the face to the outby gate entries and position several face workers outby the shearer, exposing workers to different health and safety risks. These changing risks are primarily related to worker relocation and expected increased production levels. Workers outby the face will most likely have less dust and noise exposure, but will be exposed to other safety hazards associated with outby equipment movement, materials handling, and gate entry ground movements. The face workers will most likely be exposed to higher respirable dust and noise levels generated by the equipment at elevated production rates. Methane gas emission is also expected to increase with faster mining rates. These operational changes and the control technologies needed to reduce redefined longwall worker hazards at semiautonomous longwall operations require examination to maintain the health and safety of mine workers.

This paper presents considerations in support of a U. S. oil import policy more restrictive than the present Government import program. A lower level of imports and greater long-range stability in the relationship between imports and domestic production are recommended. Reference is made to increasing world-wide surpluses of oil and wide disparities in foreign vs. domestic costs. Resulting economic forces are held responsible for the increase in imports (excluding residual fuel oil) of almost 300 percent and the change in ratio to domestic crude production from 5.4 percent to 13.9 percent during the period 1946-1956 prior to import restrictions. It is pointed out that these imports continued to increase during the years of import restrictions to a ratio of 17.3 percent of domestic production in 1961. Data are presented showing that increasing oil markets outside the United States provide an outlet' for more than 80 percent of total foreign production, with 90 percent of the increase in foreign production going to foreign markets. Attention is called to the fact that, if there had been no increase in United States oil imports during the past five years, foreign production would have increased by 45 percent in contrast to a static level of domestic crude oil production. The need for a less restrictive import policy in the interest of encouraging foreign oil development, therefore, is questioned. Declines since 1956 in the range of 30 percent in domestic exploratory crews, rotary rig activity and wildcat well completions in the United States are cited, together with a decrease of 9 percent in industry employment and increases of 9 to 18 percent in elements of cost. Recognizing that factors other than imports affect the domestic industry, it is concluded that continuing declines in the vigor, capabilities and competitive structure of the domestic industry can be expected unless further import restrictions are imposed. The public interest in assuring adequate domestic supplies is considered in the light of the role of oil and gas as a source of almost three-fourths of U. S. energy requirements and the economic benefits from petroleum production with a value exceeding the combined value of all other minerals in the United States.

"INTRODUCTION Dramatic reduction in energy use and environmental impact can be achieved with sandwich belt high angle conveyors that serve as the vital link in any IPCC (In-pit Crushing and Conveying) system. These high angle conveyors are not new at all, but have not found wide use in IPCC systems where they can realize the greatest advantage. Reduced energy consumption and environmental impact, with IPCC systems, was already realized in the 1970s. With the bulk material haulage limited to conventional open trough conveyors the most direct path out of the open pit was precluded, requiring low angle spiral ramps and/or deep slots and/or tunnels through the high wall of the open pit. These excavations, to accommodate the low angle limitations, represented undesirable impact on cost and on the environment. Against this backdrop, a major study in 1979 sought to develop high angle conveying systems that could continuously haul the mined bulk material directly out of the pit, along the high wall – the shortest distance between the two end points. Between 1979 and 1982, that study developed sandwich belt high angle conveying systems that utilized all conventional conveyor equipment including smooth surfaced rubber belts that could be continuously scraped clean. These systems had all of the positive features of conventional conveyors but overcame the angle limitation. By hugging the bulk material between two belts, the material’s internal friction could be developed to facilitate conveying at any high angle up to 90 degrees (vertical). After an intense testing period (about one year) on the first large scale prototype system, commercialization began in 1983 with the installation of a 60 degree incline system at a western United States coal mine, elevating 2000 t/h of coal to a train load out system. It did not take a long period of scrutiny and acceptance before this high angle conveyor found use in the most rugged requirements of an IPCC system. This was only the second commercial sale, and after more than 150 commercial installations, it remains arguably the most significant high angle conveying system. In 1984, a copper mine in Serbia, already using pit perimeter crushing and conveying, decided to move their primary crusher deep into the pit and to use a sandwich belt high angle conveying system to elevate the ore continuously, directly out of the pit, along the high wall to the pit perimeter where it then transferred to a conventional conveyor for the remaining haul to the plant. The system had significant features including 2000mm wide belts that elevated 250mm coarse ore, at 4000 t/h, over six 15-meter high benches for a total 90 meters of net lift. The system was able to reduce the truck haulage fleet by ten 200 ton trucks realizing great cost savings, zero emissions to the air and greatly reduced traffic congestion in the pit. The system operated successfully until 2002 when the mine shut down. Many successful sandwich belt high angle conveyors followed with the current count of commercial installations at more than 150. Despite the great success with this system, its use has not been repeated as part of an IPCC system."

Arizona copper mines produced nearly 67% of the nation?s copper in 2000, according to a report released by the Arizona Mining Association (AMA). This was a slightly larger share than in 2000 despite large reductions by one major copper producer and production cutbacks at several other facilities. In 1999, Arizona mines produced 64% of the nation?s copper. The report was prepared by economist George F. Leaming of the Western Economic Analysis Center in Marana, AZ. It also showed the copper industry had a $4.6-billion impact on the Arizona economy in 2000, a 26%decline from 1999. This is the lowest financial impact since 1973 and less than half the record reached in 1981of $9.6 billion. The decline is primarily due to a sustained low copper price and a slow-down in the US economy. The mining industry?s impact included combined direct and indirect contributions of $1.283 billion in personal income for Arizona residents, the equivalent of 43,000jobs. More than 5,000 of those jobs were in state and local government and more than 18,000 were in trade and ser-vice businesses. The copper industry directly employed fewer than 8,000 people statewide in 2000. This was down about 23% from 1999.

During the last decade, the increasing price of gold has renewed interest in the various metallurgical techniques for recovering precious metals. Much of the recent technology advance has been aimed at low grade deposits resulting in more complex processes and the necessity of tighter economic control. These factors along with more stringent environmental constraints have made it necessary to optimize each process to minimize energy and raw material consumption and reduce waste discharge. In most cases, detailed process analysis is required to detect inefficiencies and provide alternative solutions for process improvement. Also during this same period, the computer has become widely accepted and computerized mathematical modeling has been applied to an increasingly broader range of problems. Microcomputer based process modeling and simulation systems are routinely used to analyze and improve communition, hydrometallurgical, and pyrometallurgical processes for the recovery of precious metals.
