Although lithium was first discovered by Arfwedson in Sweden in 1817, it did not reach any significant status in commercial application until 1908 when Thomas A. Edison received a patent covering the use of lithium hydroxide in alkaline' storage batteries. Edison's achievement can be regarded as a major breakthrough in the development of the lithium industry. In the years prior to 1908 lithium salts had found only modest applications in the pharmaceutical and pyrotechnic fields. The next important milestone in the growth of this net industry occurred in Germany in 1918 when Metallgesellschaft at its metallurgical laboratory at Frankfort-on-Main discovered that the addition of a few hundredths percent of lithium metal to aluminum and its alloys increased-the hardness. This brought into being a new commercial use of lithium in the manufacture of bearing metals. The new material, called "Bahnmetall" (railroad, metal), was widely used for, many years in the manufacture of bearings for railroad and automotive purposes. Its use continued until the early 1930's and there was a short-lived renewal of its production during World War II. Subsequent use of-the alloy was soon outmoded.

Stopewall or room closure can be a problem in nining operations. In some mines, wall closure causes ore passes and nanways to collapse when they are enclosed in nine fill. When this phe- nomena occurs, heavy ground and, or, rock bursts frequently happen. Often, ground problems become progressively worse as mining in the stope block progresses toward the upper level. The sill and pillars in the level above may experi ence heavy ground and bursts. Sometimes the conditions get so bad in the stope that it is unsafe to mine the ore, so the stope is abandoned and the ore is lost.

Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls and Jennmar high-strength (HS) stopping panel walls are widely used for resisting high-ventilation air pressures and roof support in underground mines due to their installation efficiency, convergence allowance, and better performance than traditional concrete block stopping walls. Based on the different entry dimensions and required maximum ventilation air pressures of up to 36-in. water gauge, 24-, 27-, 30-, and 36-in.-diameter pumpable J-Crib stopping walls, or 18- to 30-in. thick Jennmar HS stopping panel walls can be designed, and their support capacities and convergence allowances are evaluated for better roof control. Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls consist of 0.187-in.-diameter steel wire reinforced, JCrib material-filled bags, and non-wire-reinforced filler bags in between. Jennmar HS stopping panel walls consist of two, 20-gauge (0.04-in.-thick), galvanized, cold-formed steel panels with J-Seal materials pumped in between. Based on the fundamental structural design principles and specifications of ACI 318-19(22), the compression and flexural strength, and shear resistance of the walls can be checked to be compliant with the codes and specifications following the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) method. Specifically, the 0.187- in.-diameter steel wires in the pumpable J-Crib walls and 20-gauge steel panels in the HS stopping walls are integral parts of the walls and are considered to effectively confine the J-Crib or J-Seal materials. These steel elements play a significant role in reinforcing and improving the strength or support capacity of the stopping walls from a structural design perspective. Because of the high ductility of low-density J-Crib/J-Seal materials and steel elements, these walls are good at accommodating or absorbing the roof convergence (≥5% entry height), which cannot be matched by a traditional concrete block stopping wall (Figure 1). Based on the successful design and application of these stopping walls in different mines for improving roof stability and avoiding the air leakage, the authors have formulated the design methodology and verified independently by the finite element analysis (FEA) simulation technique. This design methodology combines the fundamental structural design principles with specific wall dimensions and material properties, facilitating mine engineers and government agencies to understand the in-depth working mechanism of these stopping walls.

"Can the ever-increasing tonnages of ore and waste being mined today be accommodated simply by using bigger and better crushers? This paper reviews the latest primary crushing and large cone crusher designs. It highlights how—in addition to using the larger crushers now available—maximizing the utilization percentages in each of the four stages of the rock size reduction circuit will assist in meeting the larger production requirements of existing and new mining operations. Its goal is to help consultants and operators select the optimal equipment and custom-designed items in the material handling flowsheet from the mine to the mill, maximizing operating hours per year. INTRODUCTION Are larger crushers the answer to meeting the demands of existing or new mining projects for increased tonnage? Boyd (2002) predicted that larger crushers for primary and fine crushing would be beneficial and contribute to the further development of mineral processing. Larger crushers for primary and fine crushing applications are now available. The rock size reduction process from the mine to the selected milling process facility has not changed since man first broke a rock to get at the interesting mineralization within. The rock size reduction process circuit from the mine to the mill can be summarized in four stages: • Stage 1: Mining (rock breakage and fragmentation) • Stage 2: Pre-screening (scalping) • Stage 3: Primary crushing • Stage 4: Fine crushing (secondary, tertiary and quaternary) Plant throughput and ore delivery schedule will form the basis for flowsheet design and equipment selection. Once the project design criteria and the mine plan have been established, the circuit’s utilization percentage (percentage of hours when the circuit is being utilized) can be optimized for each of the four stages. The mining and process departments are the key stakeholders in the selection of the final comminution circuit, and both departments should be familiar with and contribute to the design of the circuit. This paper focuses on the four stages of a rock size reduction circuit from the mine to the mill, equipment selection, various ore and waste handling flowsheets, and improvements in crusher station design, all with the purpose of maximizing availability and plant utilization percentages. High-purity quartz (SiO2) is an important material widely used in many industries, including semiconductor technology, telecommunication, and optics. The content and distribution of impurities in quartz significantly affect the processing methods. This paper provides an insightful review on the processing of high-purity quartz, covering the analytical techniques, separation methods, and the critical procedures used to assess the quality of quartz ore. More importantly, the critical review of the thermal phase transition separation method for fine-grained mineral inclusions, micron-grade fluid inclusions, and lattice-bound trace elements is notably opened for the first time. It is proposed that the research field as a monopolized industry would benefit by expounding the critical problems that occur during the preparation of high-purity quartz.

During the past two years a computer program called "COPOR," Computerized Open Pit Optimization Routine, has been developed and used for mine planning of several base metal deposits. This routine utilizes a three dimensional computerized block model of an orebody, some economic parameters and operating constraints to locate the mineable or economic limits of the deposit schedule the yearly production from the mine and produce bench by bench ore reserve summaries and maps of the yearly and ultimate pit configurations. The moving cone method is used to perform these functions with a conventional block model. This model is conventional in the sense that each block is assumed to be homogenous; i.e., either ore or waste but not a mixture of the two. Due to the nature of a seam type deposit this approach is not realistic; therefore, revisions have been made to form a new version of the COPOR program. This version has been named "COALOR," Coal Optimization Routine. COALOR contains all of the power of the COPOR program but is equipped to handle the intricacies of coal seam type deposits. The deposit can be composed of a single seam or multiple seams which are horizontal or dipping at any angle. The numerous coal quality values can be incorporated to aid the optimization of the economic pit limits and yearly scheduling.

Southern Ohio Coal Company (SOCCO) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have identified techniques to optimize the use of scrubbers on continuous miners. The techniques provide maximum respirable dust control while maintaining a high output. The use of radio remote control and scrubber help to achieve greater advance between lifts by locating the operator in fresh air during the mining cycle. He is also kept away from newly exposed roof, which is not supported. An alternative to fan-powered scrubber was also evaluated at SOCCO. A high-pressure water-powered scrubber system eliminated the noise associated with fans, and achieved an intrinsically safe system. Experience in the use of these scrubber systems and remote control at SOCCO are discussed.

No commodity agreements now exist for sulfur and a lack of reference to sulfur commodity agreements exists in the literature. Law (1975) made a passing reference to sulfur as one of a group of commodities where "there have been additional control efforts of various types." Clearly, sulfur was a candidate, at least conceptually in the past, for some form of commodity agreement and the following discussion centers on the world sulfur market of the early 1980's in this context. GENERAL THEORY OF COMMODITY AGREEMENTS The upsurge in demands for commodity agreements seen in the last decade or so stems largely from agitation by the less developed countries (LDC) for better economic treatment by more developed countries (MDC). Several economic factors, real or imagined, adversely affect the LDC's as follows (MacAvoy, 1977): 1) variable demand in MDC's causes wide fluctuations in commodity prices which hurt the economies of commodity producers, who are often LDC's although consumer economies may also benefit from more predictable prices; 2) a general decline of commodity prices relative to the price of manufactured goods which hurts commodity producers in their balance of trade while their stocks and overcapacity rise; 3) instability of LDC economies enhanced by the above factors lowers internal stability, inhibits foreign investment, and retards economic growth; and 4) a lack of self respect when dealing with developed countries o, following the OPEC lead, LDC producers want the stature related to cartel market power.

Each year, one living Hall of Fame inductee, up to three Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, and recipients of an Industry Partnership Award and a Special Citation are recognized for their respective contributions to the mining industry. Armine Frederick Ban?eld Jr., past chairman and founder of Mintec, Inc. located in Tucson, AZ, will be honored as the 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee at the awards banquet. Banfield founded Mintec from his Tucson apartment in 1970 and expanded it to a global operation. Under his guidance, Mintec won the 2013 President?s E-Award for Exports ? the highest recognition any United States company may receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. Longwall mining is a highly productive and efficient coal mining method used in the USA. During longwall retreating, the belt entry must be maintained stable, and any roof fall in the belt entry would jeopardize mine safety and substantially interrupt the continuous production of coal in the longwall face. Past experience of longwall mining has shown that belt entry stability was the greatest challenge in longwall ground control, and the occurrence of roof falls in belt entries was largely associated with high horizontal stress. To properly support the roof in the belt entry, it is important to understand how longwall-induced horizontal stress changes affect roof stability in belt entries and to strategically install supplementary support to prevent any potential roof falls. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed horizontal stress measurements in the immediate roof of the belt entries for two Pittsburgh seam longwall panels oriented unfavorably to high horizontal stress. Hollow inclusion cells (HICells) were installed in the immediate roof at the intersection in each of the belt entries, and stress changes were monitored as the longwall face was approaching and passing the intersection. Numerical models were set up to calculate the longwall-induced horizontal stress changes in the roof at the monitoring sites. With the verified model, investigations were made of how horizontal stress is concentrated and relieved in the belt entry roof near the face under different panel orientations. Both measurements and modeling results showed that high horizontal stress is concentrated in the roof in the belt entry within about 15 m outby the face when a longwall panel is unfavorably oriented to the major horizontal stress. The study demonstrated that longwall-induced differential horizontal stress can be used as an indication of the degree of horizontal stress concentration. Roof support strategies are discussed on how to maintain the stability of belt entry under high horizontal stress concentration.

As the number of prime surface coal mining sites diminishes with time and with the potential for increased coal demand, areas that were previously not mined because of their difficult mining conditions, marginal economics, and controversial environmental nature, will have to be considered if surface coal mining is to continue in the future. Such sites include areas near major rivers, streams, and lakes. The name most commonly given to these areas by regulatory agencies is "wetlands". The exact definition(s) to the term "wetland" will be discussed later in this paper. Most coal operators are now more than familiar with permitting requirements under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA). The SMCRA permanent regulatory program recognizes the fact that coal mining operations will periodically encounter streams, wetlands, etc. Although discussed in various sections of the permanent program regulations, the relationship of coal mining operations to wetlands is particularly evident in the performance standards regarding hydrologic balance and protection of fish, wildlife and related environmental values.

A fluid mining process has been developed by the writer whereby phosphate deposits are leached in place through the injection of a weak and recoverable acid solution much in the same manner as in the recovery of oil by water-flooding. The phosphate mineralization is dissolved In place, selectively treated in a surface plant and a high grade diacalcium phosphate substatially free of fluorine (hence of feed grade quality) is recovered. Because of its finely divided and powdery state, the plant product is highly desirable as stock material for the manufacture of triple-superphosphate and of high grade phosphatic chemicals. Details of well completion, fluid injection, areal sweep and solution efficiency, plant design and economics are presented The rate of return on investment is particularly attractive under conditions of shallow occurrence of the phosphate mineralization such as in the Bone Valley formation of Florida. The process may also be applied economically to the Phosphoria formation of wide- spread occurrence in the Northwest United States through the application of selective formation fracturing (or Hydrofrac) previous to fluid mining operations.

Throughout time, the mining industry has been very successful in meeting the world's requirements for metals and materials while meeting the challenges of decreasing ore grades and increased emphasis on protection of the environment. This success has been due to the development and implementation of new technologies. A clear example of such a development over the past 25 years is the increasing use of leaching/solvent extraction/electrowinning for the recovery of copper from oxide and sulfide ores. The key to the successful introduction of this technology was the discovery and development of the hydroxyoxime liquid ion exchange reagents by General Mills Chemicals (now Henkel Corporation). An important role was also played by the close working relationships between General Mills Chemicals and Ranchers Exploration which resulted in startup of the first plant in 1968 and between General Mills Chemicals and Bagdad Copper which resulted in the startup of the second copper SX-EW plant in August of 1970. Following on the heels of the hydroxyoxime development came the commercialization of other new chelating reagents based on different chemical functionalities, i.e., beta-diketones, alkylated 8- hydroxyquinolines and sulfonamidoquinolines. This initial spurt of activity was then followed by a slowing of development in terms of new reagent functionalities. Activity has continued in terms of further optimization/improvement of existing reagent functionalities but the commercialization of new reagent functionalities has slackened. This observation reflects the fact that the development of new reagent functionalities for metal recovery has become increasingly more expensive such that the right combination of price and sales volume must exist in order to justify the investment required to bring a new reagent to the market place. Given the dependence of the mining industry on innovation to meet the needs of the future, one can ask how these new developments, particularly in new reagents, will occur. During .the past five decades or so we have passed from a time when it was difficult to point to a mine or an ore body and verify that it had been discovered by geological methods, through the. Twenties when the common saying was, "Who ever heard of a mine found by a geologist?", to recent decades when hundreds of mines and ore bodies are acknowledged geological discoveries and the above query can be ignored. Recently, however, the application of mining geology appears to have been downgraded, or so it seems to me. Basic geology in mining has been cheapened and glossed over in favor of geophysics and outcrop sampling, even though the latter is merely one technique of mining geology and, to some extent anyhow, has been used for a. long time. (Locke, 3, pp 81-87). Geophysics by itself and in conjunction with geology has had success in certain geological provinces, but limited attainment in mountainous terrane except in those few cases where strongly magnetic minerals are associated with ore. Nevertheless, in the Cordillera .many experimental techniques are offered as proved ones. This is not an intent to try to depreciate honest geo- physics. Continued experimentation and use of it is approved by all, but at the same time it is foolhardy to throw mining geology overboard, Generally both approaches should be considered and usually, at first anyhow, geology is the most direct one.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate trends in exploration expenditures of a selected group of mining companies for the interval 1968 through 1971. The paper also compares these trends with other financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and comments on the implications of these trends. Although a four-year interval is hardly enough time to establish a long-range set of trends from which operating rules can be derived, the fact that the four years selected are in the immediate past gives some sense of relevance to the matter of exploration expenditures at the present time and in the near future. The sample under study here consists of 21 mining companies. Of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the extraction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining; for example, from oil and gas sates, Also, no companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in this study. Although this definition held up fairly well when studying this list in 1968, the strict application of this definition became more difficult through the years up to the present time. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business, and either deriving their income or planning to derive a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining. The Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) held its fifth annual conference in Montreal, Quebec, Canada earlier this year. “The Minerals Industry: Responding to the Global Challenge” was the first MEMS conference to be held outside of the United States. About 125 mining- and minerals-related professionals attended. The MEMS program included six sessions and three distinguished speaker addresses. The session topics included: “Minerals in the Macro economy: Development in Demand,” “Trends in Global Metals Supply: The Producers’ Challenge,” “Global Environmental Issues: Policy Perspectives,” “Global Environmental Issues: Quantitative Analysis” and “Minerals in the CIS: Phoenix or Albatross?” A student session was also offered. It provided a competition for monetary awards for outstanding papers.

"The wear phenomenon in TBM machines is not a simple issue, as many parameters are playing an important role on the consumption of the tools during a tunnel excavation. The action of the wear due to the contact with the soil can occur on the excavation tools, on the cutterhead, in the excavating chamber and on the screw conveyor. The test developed at the Laboratory “Tunnelling and Underground Space Center” of the Politecnico di Torino is aimed to reproduce the interaction between the tools and the excavated material, simulating the excavation conditions in terms of soil conditioning and water content. The test, which is not standardized, is studied to evaluate the wear in a global point of view. The present work starts by testing the influence of the use of chemical agents during the conditioning phase on the drop of the wear phenomenon, in terms of metal weight loss. 1. INTRODUCTION The wear phenomenon of the excavation tools used in TBM tunneling machines is playing recently a major role in the design stage of full-section tunnels in both soils and rocks. Concerning EPB excavation technology, the main issue regarding productivity is the wear of its components (Peila et al.,2012), which increases the so called dead time in the whole process. The friction generated between the components and the ground causes the consumption of the tools and other metallic components in contact with the ground, described as primary and secondary wear by Nielsen et al. (2006a). This leads to downtime, with risky and complicated maintenance operations (Peila and Schulkins, 2009), as occurred in recent tunneling works in Liguria (Italy). The study of this argument in granular soils is very delicate, as it encloses not only the properties of the excavation tools, but also the characteristics of the ground to be excavated (hardness, mineralogy composition, shape and dimension of the particles and moisture content). The penetration mechanism is based on the scraping of the ground, by mean of cutting tools, with its consequent consumption. Concerning the rocks, the excavation principle is characterized by crushing the rock mass matrix by applying high compressive stresses through cutting disks. In such a way, to avoid frequent downtimes and their consequent economic losses, it is very important to study this subject and therefore understand and forecast the durability of the components, in order to try to maximize the productivity of the machine by reducing the frequency of maintenance stoppings."

A 63.5 metric tons per hour (70 TPH) demonstration coal preparation plant was constructed on the Iowa State University campus, Ames, Iowa, as a part of the Iowa Coal Project funded by the state of Iowa and administered through the Energy and Minerals Resources Re-search Institute. Processing equipment in the plant circuit includes a heavy media separator, concentration tables, separating and dewatering screens, and conveying equipment. Coal samples of size 907 metric tons (1000 tons) with sulfur contents ranging from 2.5 to 8.75% sulfur from seven mines in the state of Iowa have been pro-cessed in the plant. Sulfur reductions have averaged 35%. With ash reduction averaging 45%. Equipment for advanced fine coal beneficiation research is currently being installed in the plant to include a slurry pretreatment circuit, froth flotation, oil agglomeration, pelletization, hydrocyclones, advanced design thickener and disc filtration.

The combination of high moisture and low heating value has restricted most low-rank coal (LRC) usage worldwide to mine-mouth power generation. Coals from Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coal field have a heating value of approximately 8,000 Btu/lb and 28% moisture. Hydrothermal treatment (at 275 to 352'C) of lump coal from Usibelli Coal Mine and Beluga coal field enhanced the heating value of the coal, on an equilibrium moisture basis, from 8,000 Btu/lb to nearly 12,000 Btu/lb. The product coal with high heating value and 0.2 % S is an environmentally acceptable premium fuel. The Hardgrove grindability index of the coal is greatly improved, further enhancing its value. Increase in hydrothermal drying temperature promotes vesiculation of resinite. Vitrinite reflectance increased to 0.72 and vitrinite was subjected to widespread visiculation resulting in a coke like structure indicative that the material went through the fluid stage.

Eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs in the area of the McDermitt (Cordero) caldera began about 17.4 m.y. ago and continued for about 1.5 m.y. During this period of silicic eruptions, a circular area about 30 km in diameter collapsed to form a caldera that subsequently filled with sedimentary and volcanic rocks. 3 A total of more than 200 km of silicic rocks was erupted from the volcano. The final phase of igneous activity, about 15.5 m.y. ago, included resurgent doming and intrusion in the central part of the caldera. Three to 4 m.y. later +I2 m.y. ago), hydrothermal solutions using the northern part of the caldera ring fractures as conduits deposited cinnabar, pyrite, alunite, and other minerals in tuffaceous lake beds and volcanic rocks accumulated within the caldera. The ore-forming solutions may have been a residuum from the silicic magma or connate water or ground water heated by the still-hot resurgent magma in the central part of the caldera. The source of the mercury has not been identified. Later oxidation of the sulfide minerals and redistribution of the supergene minerals corderoite, several mercury nitro-oxychlorides, marcasite, iron, and titanium oxides in the sedimentary rocks account for most of the newly discovered ore body at Cordero.
