"The U.S. Geological Survey and Natural Resources Canada conducted a study on the net import reliance of each North American country, and the impact of North American trade on the net import reliance of 12 nonfuel mineral commodities that are associated with advanced technology products: cadmium, cobalt, gallium, germanium, graphite, indium, lithium, nickel, rare earth elements, selenium, silver and tellurium. The combined results for North America, using 2014 data, showed greatly reduced net import reliance for nearly all of the commodities evaluated, which is largely the result of pooling the resources of production and recovery in Canada and Mexico of materials that are consumed in the United States. This study highlights the mitigation of potential supply risk for critical materials that results from trade within the North American trade bloc. IntroductionMultiple metrics and definitions exist for what constitutes a critical material, but there is broad acknowledgment that a mineral commodity may be considered critical if, among other factors, its production is geographically concentrated, if it has few or no substitutes, or if the country of origin is politically unstable. Numerous governmental and independent researchers have proposed methods of investigating criticality, with differing priorities such as economic resilience or strategic military supplies (European Commission, 2014; Graedel et al., 2015; U.S. National Science and Technology Council Subcommittee on Critical and Strategic Mineral Supply Chains, 2016). While criticality really depends on who is asking the question, and despite the differing priorities, there are several commodities that are commonly found to be of concern. In particular, some critical or potentially critical materials are used increasingly in advanced technologies, or they have complicated supply chains because they are coproduced or are produced in controlled markets.Commodities for which imports are required to satisfy domestic demand are those for which the importing country is net import reliant. In longwall mining, ventilation is considered one of the more effective means for controlling gases and dust. In order to study longwall ventilation in a controlled environment, researchers built a unique physical model called the Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) in a laboratory at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) campus. LIAM is a 1:30 scale physical model geometrically designed to simulate a single longwall panel with a three-entry headgate and tailgate configuration, along with three back bleeder entries. It consists of a twopart heterogeneous gob that simulates a less compacted unconsolidated zone and more compacted consolidated zone. It has a footprint of 8.94 m (29 ft.) by 4.88 m (16 ft.), with a simulated face length of 220 m (720 ft.) in full scale. LIAM is built with critical details of the face, gob, and mining machinery. It is instrumented with pressure gauges, flow anemometers, temperature probes, a fan, and a data acquisition system. Scaling relationships are derived on the basis of Reynolds and Richardson numbers to preserve the physical and dynamic similitude. This paper discusses the findings from a study conducted in the LIAM to investigate the gob-face interaction, airflow patterns within the gob, and airflow dynamics on the face for varying roof caving characteristics. Results are discussed to show the impact of caving behind the shields on longwall ventilation.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION At the Star mine, Hecla Mining Co., located in Burke, Shoshone County, ID, the mining method is horizontal slicing (timbered or untimbered) cut-and-fill using hydraulic sand backfill. Back stoping as well as breast stoping is used; see Fig. 1. The annual produc¬tion from all cut-and-fill mining is 259 816 t (286,400 st). The average depth ranges from 366 to 2408 m (1200 to 7900 ft). A majority of the tonnage comes from an average depth of 2240 m (7350 ft). Average travel time to the stope is 1 hr. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size and Ground Conditions The ore body is 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) along the strike and 2408 m (7900 ft) on the dip, with an average vein width of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). The dip is essentially vertical. The ore body is heavily sheared and broken on the main fault structures; it is more competent on the wall veins but everywhere subject to rock bursting at depth. The hanging and footwalls are strongly fractured on the main fault structures, again more competent but still fractured on the wall veins. All host rock is Revett quartzite. Value and Production Requirements The ore value is $56 per ton. Production require¬ments are 1089 t/ d (1200 stpd), five days per week. Why Cut-and-Fill? The slusher extraction method is the most satisfac¬tory and practical for narrow vertical veins with sheared walls. The method must be quite selective to be com¬mercial. The veins are too narrow for rubber-tired ex¬traction and the grade is not high enough to make resuing practical. DETAILED DESCRIPTION Development Access to the main shaft is by the 3.2-km (2-mile) main haulage tunnel. The level intervals in the vertical timbered shafts are 61 m (200 ft). Vein development is by crosscut and laterals located 30.5 m (100 ft) into the vein wall. Vein crosscuts are on ±61 m (200 ft) centers. Access to the vein is by raises carried up with the stope. The raises are equipped with four wood¬cribbed chutes (two orepasses reinforced with angle irons, one manway, and one timber slide, Figs. 2-6). The initial cut is located 6.7 m (22 ft) above the main level (Fig. 1). Stoping Cycle Detail Sampling: Grab samples are taken from the mine cars. Channel sampling of the faces and backs is done when necessary. Drilling: For stope drilling, Ingersoll-Rand 300M percussion drills are used, with Ingersoll-Rand 300M and Gardner-Denver RB83M stopers, used for back stoping. Breasting down is done with Gardner-Denver S83FM jacklegs. The back stoping rounds are 0.9 to 1.8 m (3 to 6 ft) and the breast stoping rounds 1.5 to 3m (5 to 10 ft). Blasting: For stope blasting DuPont Tovex 100 watergel with fuses and igniter cord is used primarily. Approximately 60% of the blasting is done with am¬monium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO). For development headings and shaft sinking, DuPont Drivex watergel with Ensign Bickford Nonel Primadet primers is is used. Mucking: Broken ore is removed entirely by slusher in the stopes. These are mostly 3.7-7.5-kW (5-10-hp) Ingersoll-Rand air-powered or 7.5-37.3-kW (10-50-hp) Ingersoll-Rand electric-powered. In the horizontal de¬velopment headings Eimco 12B and 21 and Atlas Copco LM-56 overshot mucking machines and a 0.76 (1 cu yd) hydroelectric Wagner HST-1 LHD (load-haul-dump) unit are used. Rockway for Extraction: The cribbed chutes (Fig. 7) are nearly vertical and hexagonal in shape and are made of spaced 152 x 203-mm (6 x 8-in.) timber, reinforced with varying weights and sizes of angle iron, depending on wear requirements. Rectangular cribbed chutes are used where ground pressure is not a problem. Cribbing is added in 2.4 or 3-m (8 or 10-ft) extensions accord¬ing to the floor height (whether timbered or untimbered). See Figs. 8 and 9. Backfilling: Backfilling is done with hydraulic sand consisting of classified mill tailings at 65% solids. The fill contains approximately 20% 325-mesh fines. The tailings are pumped 3353 m (11,000 ft) at 50-55% solids 22.7 dry t/h (25 dry stph) with a duplex piston pump. Cycloning increases the tailings density to 65% solids. This paper deals with the daily work of operating geologists and should be of interest to recent graduates. Working with development and production is quite different from exploration and many of the required skills and techniques must be learned on the job. Try to obtain your first position at a mine where good geological work is being done because it is important that you establish a solid foundation by learning valid techniques. Many do not! Those who desire to work in exploration are well advised to spend the initial two or three years at an operating mine where they will deal daily with an orebody during development and mining. Attempt to understand the controls of ore deposition and be interested in all phases of the operation. Learn something about factors which can adversely affect profitability and you will be a better explorationist.

Corrosion and abrasion properties of a series of chromium-containing cast iron balls with Cr contents ranging from 0 to 29% was evaluated and compared with austenitic stainless steel and mild steel balls. Marked ball wear tests were performed on artificial ore samples consisting of 95% quartzite with either 5% pyrrhotite or 5% chalcopyrite under a nitrogen or oxygen atmosphere. The electrochemical mechanism was investigated by correlating the corrosive wear with the corrosion currents obtained from potentiodynamic polarization curves under abrasion. An offset in their electrochemical activities was observed somewhere between 16 and 26% Cr. In fact, 26 and 29% Cr cast irons showed an excellent corrosion resistance approaching that of austenitic stainless steel. Flotation recoveries were estimated on a 95% quartzite + 5% pyrrhotite sample ground with various cast iron ball materials under an oxygen or nitrogen atmosphere. Electrochemical results are found to be in good agreement with corrosive wear obtained from marked ball wear test and with flotation results.

White Pine Copper Company began operating a plant designed to recover copper matte particles from its discarded reverberatory furnace slags in April, 1972. Seasonal operation, generally the months of April through November, continued through October, 1974, shutting down due to feed exhaustion. White Pine reverberatory furnace slags contained economically recoverable amounts of copper for a variety of reasons. Among them: 1. White Pine concentrates yield extremely high matte grades (65+% Cu) and viscous slags. The viscous slags hinder matte settling causing matte "prill" entrapment in the slag 2. White Pine's total refined copper output is accomplished through fire refining requiring special techniques for impurity removal, especially small amounts of nickel introduced from purchased pyrite and chalcopyrite fluxes. These special techniques result in high-copper slags, refractory to smelting, being reintroduced into the reverberatory furnace. 3. Furnace bottom build-ups resulting in mechanical matte entrapment through the formation of "dams" hindering matte flow. 4. Occasional concentrate fluxing and furnace atmosphere control problems.

In recent years there has been a considerable amount of research work done relative to the effect of pretreatment and aging in water on the surface properties of both simple metal oxides and more complex oxides such as the silicate minerals 1-6. Of particular interest is the work of Somasundaran6 who states that after preparing minerals by size reduction and washing with dilute acids "... it is essential to treat it (the mineral) with water in order to remove any effects of leaching itself." Somasundaran also states, "... it is advisable to use a solution close to the point of zero charge for conditioning purposes." Parksl notes that, "Dehydration, dehydroxylation, and increased crystallinity can be expected to decrease the PZC. The presence of anionic impurities or of pH-independent potential determining ions will decrease the PZC. Cationic species will increase the PZC." Healy and Jellett4 believe that in the Zn0-water system "the surface charge of Zn0 in water and each pH is determined by the concentration and adsorption of each hydrolyzed (charged and uncharged) Zn(II) species." Finally, according to Parks 2, "The PZC of an unaltered com¬plex oxide in a system devoid of specific electrolytes is approximately the average of the PZC's of its component oxides... Equilibration with water results in loss of mono and divalent cations by exchange with H+, thus a loss of influence on the PZC by those cations, i.e., a shift in the PZC with time in the direction of that remaining oxide. The present paper investigates the change of point of zero charge (PZC) of a number of simple oxides and several complex oxides as a function of aging time in water. In some cases acid pretreatment of minerals was performed. However, in most cases the minerals were not acid pretreated. In several systems pH change as a function of aging time in water was monitored.

"Una de las enfermedades más extendidas en la industria minera es la pérdida de audición inducida por el ruido. La exposición de los mineros a niveles de ruido superiores a los niveles de exposición permisibles resulta en la pérdida de audición de aproximadamente el 80% de los mineros del carbón a la edad de jubilarse. En este contexto, el Instituto Nacional para la Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional (NIOSH, por sus siglas en inglés) está realizando investigaciones para desarrollar controles de ruido aplicados a los sistemas de minado de tajeos largos. Este método de minado es usado para extraer la mitad de la producción nacional de carbón subterránea. A partir de las mediciones en campo, se determinó en investigaciones anteriores que los componentes dominantes que generan sonido en el cizallador de un sistema de tajeos largos son los dos tambores de corte utilizados para extraer el carbón. Debido a las dimensiones y complejidad de los sistemas de minado de tajeos largos, el proyecto NIOSH desarrolló un modelo de elementos finitos validado del tambor de corte para utilizarlo en la predicción del sonido generado por este debido a las fuerzas de excitación experimentadas en las operaciones subterráneas. Este mismo modelo se utilizará para desarrollar controles de ingeniería para el ruido del tambor. Las fuerzas de excitación surgen de la interacción de la broca de corte y el carbón, y se transmiten al tambor de corte a través de los sujetadores de brocas. Debido a las condiciones adversas en el frente y la falta de instrumentación aprobada para uso subterráneo, las fuerzas operativas de corte de carbón no han sido evaluadas anteriormente. Para este fin, NIOSH, en colaboración con la Universidad Tecnológica de Michigan, desarrolló una broca instrumentada autónoma con seguridad intrínseca para medir estas fuerzas. Este artículo describe el desarrollo de la broca instrumentada y la medición de las fuerzas operativas de corte de carbón en tres minas. Of all the industrial clay minerals, attapulgite probably enjoys the widest variety of applications. A review published over three years ago by Haden and Schwint (18) cited some 80 individual uses, a list which continues to grow. In its near half-century of commercial life, attapulgite has received a generous share of research study and patent development effort, both on the part of producers as well as consumers. This work has been divided between understanding the mineral's structure or properties and applying it to specific end-uses. Naturally, information gained from the former has pointed toward opportunities in the latter. References of particular significance are cited throughout the text. Attapulgite's variety of uses derives from the unique three-dimensional structure and needle-shaped particle form of this crystalline hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Its inherent colloidal and sorptive properties are well known, and distinguish it from its sister clay minerals. Attapulgite is characterized by its high surface area, porosity, sorptivity, and decolorizing power. Its slips or slurries are viscous and thixotropic, however, unlike bentonite are not flocculated by electrolytes. In Table I are compared the general properties of attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolin. The properties in Table I are documented in greater detail by the wealth of scientific literature which has been published on the composition (14)(15), structure (6)(16), surface (16)(4)(22)(24), adsorption (31)(4)(5)(25), rheology (10-11)(12)(13)(26)(27)(32), plasticity (30) (31), and chemistry (23)(3)(7) of attapulgite. Attapulgite is the principal mineral constituent (70 to 80%) of attapulgite clay as it is commercially produced in the Georgia-Florida area of the United States. As mined, this clay also contains 10 to 1S% montmorillonite, sepiolite, and other clays; 4 to 8% quartz, and 1 to 5% calcite or dolomite. Electromagnetic emissions from electrical devices may interfere with electronic safety systems or other devices in the mining environment. This electromagnetic interference (EMI) may cause unwanted changes in the performance of the affected devices and may cause safety issues for miners. To minimize the risk of EMI, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research quantifying the electromagnetic emissions of several types of equipment that might be used in the mining environment. Previous research has shown that welding arcs can give off ultraviolet (UV) emissions, visible light, and infrared (IR) emissions that can cause health problem on skin and eyes. In this study, the electromagnetic emissions of the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process were monitored and measured. Several factors including operating mode (AC, DC positive or DC+, DC negative or DC-), current setting (low, medium, high, maximum), and electrode type were investigated to compare their effect on emission level. The test shows that the emission level from the welding process can be affected by those factors. The test data also shows that, among those factors, the operating mode has more influence on emission level than do current setting and electrode type. The information in this paper can be useful for the mining industry to better understand the emission in the 9-kHz to 500-MHz frequency range from a SMAW welder.

For many years the green and dry compressive strengths' of pellets have been, considered as possible criteria of pellet performance during induration. Although widely quoted throughout the industry, little attention has been given to standardizing the unfired pellet compressive strength test or to determining the characteristics of the test. The purpose-of this study was to compare the constant deformation rate test with that using a constant loading rate in addition, the dependence of these tests on such pellet properties as size, weight, and method of balling was to be investigated.

In the earliest days of mining coal the obvious method was by bord and pillar working. Longwall in Britain developed from this as an expedient to overcome bottlenecks arising from ? 1) increasing depth of seams causing roof control difficulties; and 2) ventilation problems. This system became almost universal particularly in the thicker seams, where faces of up to one mile in length were not uncommon. Coal getting in these faces was usually by pick and shovel, filled into small waggons of up to 15 cwts capacity. These waggons ran on rails laid alongside the coal face and were often taken away from the face to the main haulage roads by horses. The roof was supported by rigid props and the wastes were normally controlled by strip packing. This system of mining was very flexible and worked well down to sections of about 3'6"

The mining complex being analyzed consists of four mines and two processing plants located in an area where there are several existing modes of transportation. Figure 1 shows a map of the general layout of the four proposed mines and the two existing processing plants. The mines are identified by the numerals "I" through "IV" and the plants by the letters "A" and "B". A proposed overland conveyor would collect the product from all four mines and convey it to Processing Plant A. Alternate transportation systems are as follows: Railroad transport from Mines I and II to Plant B; Highway trucking from Mines I and II to Plant A; Off-the-road truck haulage from Mine III to Plant B and from Mine IV to Plant A. River transportation from the mines to the processing plants was not considered in this study under the assumption that the high capital investments for the loading and unloading facilities, in addition to difficult traffic problems, would make this mode of transportation unattractive.

Coal-based reduction followed by magnetic separation is an innovative technology used in processing refractory iron ores. Given that size is essential to the separation of the metallic iron from the gangue, the morphology of metallic iron particles and their evolution during coal-based reduction are investigated in the present work. The size of the metallic iron particle increased from 128.76 µm to 565.70 µm when the reduction time increased from 20 min to 60 min at 1,225° C and C/O (i.e., the amount of coal addition in terms of the gram-atomic ratio of the fixed carbon in the coal added to the combined oxygen in iron oxides) of 2.5. Based on our microstructural and metallographic analysis, the iron ore reduction process can be divided into three stages: (1) metallic iron particle formation, (2) iron oxide reduction and metallic iron assembly and (3) metallic iron particle growth. Almost all iron oxides are reduced to metallic iron in the second stage. These newborn metallic iron particles are energetically active and able to assemble and grow, and are eventually separated from the gangue. The large metallic iron particles benefit the subsequent magnetic separation process.

The large scale transportation and storage of sulphur in the liquid state is a relatively new development, but is really only a logical extension of old mining and processing techniques, It is not known who the first person was to win a relatively pure sulphur from ore by melting, but this method was commercially used at least two hundred years ago in Sicily and is still in use today. The Frasch process of mining was invented over sixty years ago, and the development and improvement of-liquid sulphur pumping and handling techniques has paralleled the growth in the Frasch mining industry. During the last fifty years, improvements in the technology of using sulphur have included the premelting of sulphur prior to its being burned for acid production or conversion into CS2 and other compounds. Yet, until fairly recent times, sulphur produced as liquid has been solidified into large blocks at the producing point, broken down by blasting or with mechanical equipment, and shipped in bulk form as a solid.

The adsorption process, density and structural property of the oleate layer adsorbed onto a hydroxyapatite (HAP) surface at six different concentrations and three pHs (pH 8, 9 and 10) have been studied using the technique of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The present study demonstrated the versatility and accuracy of the QCM-D for surface adsorption characterization. The real-time measurements of frequency and dissipation shifts with a hydroxyapatite-coated sensor revealed changes in the hydroxyapatite surface during the entire adsorption process. Chemisorption and surface precipitation of sodium oleate were also observed on the surface of hydroxyapatite through the use of Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR). Chemisorption dominated at low concentrations and high pH values and formed a rigid and thin adsorption layer. Surface precipitation of calcium oleate and micelles dominated at concentrations higher than critical micelle concentration (CMC) and lower pHs and formed a thick but dissipated adsorption layer with a high hydration level. Three distinct adsorption behaviors were identified from the different slopes of ?D-?f plots. The adsorption density was less than a monolayer at concentrations <0.164 mM, but increased significantly at concentrations higher than 0.821 mM at all three pHs. The critical concentration at pH 8 was 0.33 mM, which was lower than at pH 9 (0.821 mM) and pH 10 (3.3 mM).

The Sam Goosly or Equity silver deposit is fundamental- ly a discovery based on the analysis and interpretation of reconnaissance geochemical samples. The discovery was made by Kennco in an area of heavy forestation and wide- spread cover by thin glacial debris. No major mines had been discovered in the vicinity of the discovery prior to the geochemical reconnaissance, and the interpretation of the geochemical results therefore was based on data available through geologic mapping and the sample collection process. In the period 1959-1961, PE. Hirst and his crew, in 1962- 1965 P.T. Blackand his crew, and in 1966-1967 C.S. Ney and P.T. Black and their crew collected geochemical samples from the area of what is now the ore body. Several of these samples were compiled and reanalyzed in the winter of 1966- 1967 for various trace elements, including fluorine. A strong, almost 16-sq-km (10-sq-mile) fluorine anomaly was projected along with a very weak heavy metal anomaly. On the basis of this anomaly, a chalcopyrite-bearing quartz monzonite was discovered in 1967. This was a misleading, noneconomic discovery not associated with the Sam Goosly discovery. The interpretation of the geochemical data by Barakso that summer indicated that another source was responsible for the fluorine anomaly. The conclusion was based on the assemblage of trace elements. Therefore C.S. Ney recommended further regional soil sampling to check the original data. The early results of this follow-up sampling found over 33 ppm silver. First float, then ore outcrop was found in the area of the silver anomaly. The attached reprints complete the development of the property after the discovery of the outcrop of ore.
