A number of recent studies 1-4 suggest that steelmaking expansion might be achieved more economically by a combination of the prereduction furnace and the electric steelmaking furnace rather than through new blast furnace construction. Supergrade concentrates would be the first step in an evolving technology which bypasses the blast furnace and in which the concentrates are first made into pre¬reduced pellets and then used directly in electric steelmaking, Prereduced pellets made from superconcentrates should not only be competitive with scrap, but should be a preferred feed for the electric furnace because of the absence of such residual elements as copper and nickel. Furthermore, geographic areas remote from present steelmaking centers may find the electric furnace to be an economical method of providing local steel requirements. The development of successful methods of producing superconcentrates may also be expected to find application to conventional blast furnace burdens. The need for methods of increasing grade of domestic concentrates will become increasingly urgent in the face of competition from high grade imports. Only a small percentage of domestic iron ore production can qualify as superconcentrates, (Superconcentrates for the purpose of this investigation are limi¬ted to those concentrates which contain a maximum of 2 percent S'02). During the last several years the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines has directed research efforts to develop methods of manufacturing superconcentrates from present standard grade products by cationic flotation, screening, and magnetic separation.

Following an in-depth scenario and strategic planning exercise in 1997, Noranda's mine production goal was set at 500,000 tonnes per year of both copper and zinc metal within five years. There had been no recent discoveries, reserves were shrinking and things had to be done differently and quickly. Change is now continual in our program but here is what we did first: Combined the exploration and business development groups Formed teams to search for and respond to opportunity Made our geologists more business minded and our engineers more optimistic Went global Set clear thresholds, farmed out the marginal properties, fast tracked the others Focused reconnaissance exploration where we had a clear competitive advantage Became a "flexible" partner to both juniors and seniors Is it working? A number of successes, near successes, and outright failures are discussed. The main result is a much higher rate of opportunity flux which is essential for success in the mining industry.

The Crushed Stone Industry plays an important role in Pennsylvania's mineral economy. During 1965, the total production of crushed and broken stone in the United States reached 780 million tons from which 57 million tons were produced in Pennsylvania (Mineral Industries Surveys, 1966). It is further significant that Pennsylvania is the nation's leading crushed stone producer. Future trends in stone production will quite likely parallel those in the construction industry. Stone and stone products are finding greater and more varied uses each year. Continued record expenditures for structures such as dams, highways and buildings are the prime reasons for this accelerated growth in demand. Completion of the interstate road system and the maintenance of Pennsylvania's already expanded highway system form the essentials for this expanding market.

The primary objective of the structural geology portion of the Kennecott Copper Corporation-U. S. Bureau of Mines Pit Slope Stability Study was to determine the attitude, geometry, and spatial distribution of geologic structures of the west wall of the Kimbley Pit for use in designing a maximum stable slope for the pit. A corollary objective was to develop and refine techniques for collecting and analyzing geologic structural data with emphasis on numerical methods that could be integrated with other aspects of pit design. Surface mapping techniques used were a modification of conventional joint set mapping and a detailed linear sampling method. For subsurface investigations both oriented core and a borehole camera were used. It was determined that the major faults in the area were favorably oriented for mining a steep stable slope. The jointing or natural fracturing, although complex, was not random in attitude and consisted of several persistent fracture sets and a number of secondary sets. The attitude of the persistent fracture sets was favorable for steeper slope angles, and these attitudes were used in the design considerations. There was no significant difference between the attitude of the fracture sets determined from the former and new slope face.

Recent changes in the field of ore and bulk commodity handling has forced a reevaluation of previously conceived notions. When vessels were small, and sources of raw material were reasonably close to areas of need, the role of the shipping terminal was of secondary importance. Now terminals must be built to take advantage of the economic benefits of the supercarriers. The shipping rates of the 80's will not be determined by the 60,000 DWT or even 150,000 ton capacity bulk carrier, but rather by the supercarriers in the 250,000 DWT class or larger. When the Suez Canal was closed, the shipping industry took a hard look at the economics of the large bulk carrier. Naval architects overcame the problems and successfully designed large supertankers, which today are plying the seas in excess of 350,000 DWT. Orders have been placed for tankers of 480,000 DWT. The shippers of dry bulk materials are now coming to similar conclusions about the economics of supercarriers. As of today, over 40 orders have been placed for vessels in the 250,000 DWT class, representing an investment of over 11/2 billion dollars, and many more are being considered. These vessels are being designed as combination ore/oil (0/0) or ore/bulk/oil (OBO's) carriers. The oil industry has seen the need for terminals which can accommodate these supertankers. The dry bulk shippers, and particularly ore shippers, must now act.

To evaluate methane explosion hazards in longwall coal mines, a CFD model was developed along with a 1/40th-scale, optically accessible model of an underground longwall coal mining section. In this project, CFD models assisted in the design of the physical model to ensure specifications were met for accurately representing the scaling physics as well as to assist in narrowing the experimental matrix and identifying key locations for sensor placement to measure velocity, pressure, and gas concentrations. This research will help develop strategies for methane monitoring that prevent methane ignitions and explosions in longwall coal operations.

It is a distinguished honor for me to have this opportunity, and I am highly appreciative of this distinction. The beautiful surroundings of Gatlinburg and the pleasantness of a summer occasion are a wonderful tonic for all of us, yet they should not blind us to the seriousness of our Industry's problems No doubt, because of my past appearances before members of the Society of Mining Engineers, at which I discussed wholly scientific topics, or research in the Applied Sciences, you may be expecting me to revert to these subjects. But I intend to venture in a field that is new to me, yet old to all of us, the field of Economics.

The Mexican fluorspar industry is faced with and will face serious problems, some of their own making and others beyond their control. However, they still offer the most secure source of fluorspar for North American' consumers. Since 1975, even in light of declining markets, they have, increased then production capabilities' as shown in Table #1. In analyzing Table #1, we note that Compania Miners Rio Colorado has closed down due to their ore reserves being exhausted. Fluorita de Rio Verde expanded their acid grade fluorspar capacity in anticipation of additional North American business. Campania Miners Las Cuevas presumably increased capacity to meet their North American contractual commitments and to supply their own hydrofluoric acid plant (Fluorex) at Juarez, Mexico. Historically, the Mexican fluorspar industry has relied on the United States as the mainstay for their sales. As shown in Tables #2 and #3, the Mexican share of the United States market has moderately decreased. However, as noted in Table #4 the volume loss is substantial as explained below.

Acknowledgments I am honored to be named as a recipient of the Antoine M. Gaudin Award, and I would like to briefly single out four groups who deserve a special thank-you relative to this award. The first group consists of Professor Kawatra, the many international support references that he gathered and the Gaudin Committee itself. I know such things don't come without considerable effort by many individuals, and I'm grateful for their support. The second group consists of the management of The Dow Chemical Company, the managements of various mining companies and, in recent years, the management of G. S. Technologies, all of whom supported me, financially and otherwise, in my grinding, flotation and other particle-processing work. Operations people are the most overworked and under recognized people in the world, whether they be in the mining or chemical industry. Obviously, without extensive industrial support, especially from operating personnel in the mining industry, almost nothing about the work contained in this lecture would have, or could have, happened. The third group consists of a number of coworkers who have played key roles in specifically implementing the new flotation-product portion of this lecture. Of these, Bob Hansen, Don Leonard, Basil Fee, Simon Isherwood, Fernando Cones and Marty Meulendyke deserve special recognition. They have not only been dedicated, but they have been great to work with. Also in this third group are many members of the international academic community, especially those at Penn State. Professor Leonard Austin must be singled out because he took me as a young mathematically oriented chemist and taught me to be an effective process-oriented engineer. Without this experience, I would not have had the over 30-year career as an engineer, which I have loved. In addition, Len planted the size-reduction-research virus in my blood, which I can't seem to get rid of. I also need to mention Professor Frank Aplan, whose obvious love of mineral processing and froth flotation helped to create my interest in flotation. Thus, for those of you who don't like my approach to flotation, it's all Frank's fault. The fourth, and certainly not the least, group to thank is my wife, Charlene, and our two sons, Richard and Steven. No one could have a more supportive family. In every sense of the word, my wife has been my partner from the beginningwe were married at the end of my freshman year in college. She has sacrificed much for me, and I will never really be able to express the depth of my gratitude for Charlene's encouragement, loyalty and support over the past 36 years. General comments on froth flotation The industrial process of froth flotation: Where is it going? I'm here to tell you loud and clear that froth flotation is alive, well, and growing. The inherent characteristics of high mineral throughput per unit of capital, low operating cost per unit of feed, high mineral specificity and high operating flexibility have guaranteed froth flotation an important past and a growing future. As with any evolving technology, there are always trends at the industrial level that are primarily driven by economics. 1. INTRODUCTION In this section, precious metals are defined as gold, silver, and the platinum group metals comprised of platinum, palladium, iridium, osmium, and rhodium. If the first three years of the 1970's are the criteria, gold, silver, and platinum seem destined for a bright future. Gold advanced in price from the historic figure of $35 established in 1934 to over $100 per oz (1973). For the five years 1966 to 1970, silver consumption exceeded production by about 50%. The silver price appears to be definitely on the uptrend, and a price of over $3 per oz seems probable. On this basis (at 1964 costs) the United States has an estimated 5 billion oz of unmined silver. The fresh burst of interest in platinum with a surge of renewed price strength (end of 1972) is due to the activity in the automobile emission control area, where platinum re¬mains the front runner in the catalyst area. Some international financial experts believe that governments will not rush into reform of the monetary system, and "Special Drawing Rights" (SDR's) will gain increased standing as international mone¬tary reserve assets. Gold will continue to be reviewed as the ultimate store of value and will remain the global monetary base. Devaluation of the U.S. dollar caused by imbalance of import payments over ex¬ports is the basic reason that the price of gold will likely remain above the $90 per oz figure for the balance of the 1970's. Gold and silver usually occur intimately associated, and recovery methods are often closely related; however, they were assigned sepa¬rate chapters, because the major production of each metal is from ore deposits classified as either gold or silver. For example, the gold ore occurrences in South Africa, the world's leading gold producer, have a ratio of gold to silver of approximately 10 to 1. The ores at the Homestake Mine, Lead, S.D., the largest U.S. gold producer, are predominantly gold with a ratio to silver of approximately 5 to 1. Silver in each example is a byproduct. By this same classification, the largest U.S. silver producers are the silver ores of the Sunshine, Galena, and Lucky Friday mines in the Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho. However, the largest single-mine silver producer in the Free World is the Kidd Creek Mine at Timmins, Ont., where the occurrence is with sulfides of copper, lead, and zinc. Thus, the major gold production of the world is derived from those ores classified as gold ores; whereas, less than one-half of the silver production is from silver ores, and only a small percentage of the silver production is from gold ores. 2. GOLD Gold, the noblest of metals, has been mined for thousands of years. Its chemical symbol, Au, is derived from the Latin "aurum," meaning "shining dawn." A precious substance because it is one of the rarest metals, it has unique physical properties: it does not tarnish; it exceeds all other metals or alloys in malleability and ductility; it is a good conductor of electricity and is one of the most nonreactive metals. Its greatest strength is its indestructibility. It is the only metal mined at depths exceeding 10,000 ft. Since the early 1800s, its chief role has been as a medium of exchange, providing the basis for interna¬tional trade. In the past 15 years, however, gold has emerged as a useful industrial commodity. This role has been fortified by the estab¬lishment of a two-tier pricing system which maintains monetary gold prices at an established U.S. Government price, with industrial gold being priced higher by the free-market system. Occurrences and Production Native gold furnishes most of the world's production, since gold forms stable natural compounds with few other elements. Neverthe¬less, the metal is widespread with traces of it found in seawater and in the ashes of plants and animal material. Next to the native metal, the tellurides have been the most important gold-bearing minerals; these include calaverite, krennerite, slyvanite, hessite, and nagyagite. Native gold is invariably alloyed with more or less silver, but it is exceptional to find any other metal in the alloy. It is found in veins associated with quartz, calcite, alunite, other gangue minerals, and with various sulfides. Sulfide minerals in order of frequent associa¬tion are: pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, tetrahe¬drite, and pyrrhotite. Small amounts of metallic gold are commonly disseminated through such sulfides. When considerable amounts of silver occur in gold, the mineral electrum is formed. In a few deposits, gold and mercury form natural amalgam. Native mercury is formed by weathering from cinnabar and other mercury minerals. Among the minerals sometimes mistaken for gold, pyrite, marcasite, and especially chalcopyrite may be men¬tioned. The flakes of biotite and other micas, especially when partially oxidized, also may imitate it closely. World gold reserves never have been estimated carefully. Esti¬mates indicate that present world reserves approximate I billion oz, of which about 60% occurs in South Africa and 20% in the USSR. World gold output is dominated by South Africa which produces two-thirds of the world's production from reserves that are adequate to maintain existing output levels. South African gold output comes from approximately 50 large underground operations that mine and mill 70 to 80 million tons of ore annually to recover 30 to 32 million oz of gold. The USSR is the second largest gold producer, followed by Canada and the United States (see Table 1). Gold production in the United States and Canada rose to high levels in the 1930's, following the increase in price from $20.67 to $35 per oz and with an abundance of good labor due to depression in other industries. Production of over 10 million oz in 1940 was behind only that of South Africa. World War II caused a precipitous drop in gold output due to the imposition of War Production Board Limitation Order L-208 issued in October 1942, which caused over 9,000 gold mines in the United States to shut down, most of which never reopened. The U.S. Treasury, which suspended purchases of newly mined gold in 1968, had been the sole buyer of U.S. produced gold since 1934. This created the two-tier pricing system, and in March 1972 the President signed into law a bill authorizing a $3 increase in the official price of gold to $38 per oz. In February 1973 the President ordered a second devaluation of the dollar, amounting to about 10% which raised the official price to $42.22 per oz. In 1911, a young mining engineer named Bartlett Thane assembled a large claim block, 4 miles southeast of Juneau, Alaska. Across the Gastineau Channel on Douglas Island, the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company had, by 1904, produced gold valued at more than three times the purchase price of Alaska in 1867 (Kelly, 2010). Thane knew his deposit was lower grade than other mines or prospects in the area; however, if the deposit was developed on a large-scale, the trend and size of the deposit made the project potentially economic. In 1911, Thane developed a business plan for the project and successfully attracted investor interest. In 1912, Daniel C Jackling visited the property at the request of an east coast investment group. Upon inspection of 5 years of production records for the Perseverance Mine, Jackling saw an opportunity to apply the low-grade/high volume milling technology which was widely adopted to the copper porphyry deposits of the southwestern U.S. With a design capacity of 6,000 tons per day (5,454 tonnes/day), Jackling’s innovative mill design would require high volume underground mining methods and the power of two new hydroelectric projects. By 1915, the Alaska Gastineau Mining Company was in full production. Between 1915 and 1919, the mine and mill set production records for haulage and throughput. The hydroelectric projects proved to be successful engineering marvels. Operational difficulties related to ore grade, refractory elements and labor shortages interrupted production on an increasing basis. In 1921, the mining company permanently shut down operations. INTRODUCTION The Juneau Gold Belt begins at Windham Bay near the southern end of Stephens Passage and extends approximately 100 miles north to Berners Bay (Figure 1). The first large-scale and sustained underground mine, operated by the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company in the late 1880’s, established the Juneau-Douglas area as the regional hub for transportation and development. In the mid-1890’s, the combined population of Juneau and Douglas reached approximately 3,000 residents, largely driven by employment and support demands of several small to mid-size underground gold mines in the region. By 1904, the value of the cumulative gold production of the Alaska Treadwell was five times greater than the purchase price of Alaska in 1867 (Kelly, 2010). By the turn of the 20th century, economic growth in the Juneau-Douglas area relied on supplies delivered from the lower 48. Passenger and freight shipping lines required 3 to 4 days to make the one-way trip from Seattle to Juneau. Established shipping routes required experienced crews due to navigation hazards and adverse weather conditions. Even with precautions at the time, steam ships and freighter vessels experienced breakdowns or encounters with natural hazards that resulted in damage or in some cases, sinking. Interestingly, with no roads or railroads connecting Juneau to other communities in southeast Alaska, Juneau still relies on seaborn shipping in the 21st century.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2012 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for 2012: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by SNL Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2012 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities, which were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,300 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.4 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. Based on the characteristics of the ore bodies, the deposits are divided into several mining zones. The geotechnical properties of mining zones are also different from one zone to another. A successful geotechnical collection system is very important for the mining designs and operations in the Leeville underground mine.

Extensive testing in the past ten years has shown that where a uniform natural gamma background is present in the strata bordering the seam, the thickness of the boundary coal left in place after mining can be determined by measuring the attenuation of that radiation (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989). Measurements made by the authors in underground mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky, and by others in Wyoming and New Mexico, have shown the presence of such a gamma background (Nelson, 1989). Natural gamma coal thickness sensors of several configurations have been tested in mines owned and operated by the Consolidation Coal Company in Pennsylvania and west Virginia (Nelson and Bessinger, 1988).

In this paper, a geostatistical study of the North Butte roll type uranium deposit is presented. The geostatistical procedure applied takes into account the varying direction of the roll front for reserves calculations. For variogram calculation, the roll front is unfolded thereby allowing estimation of the variogram in directions parallel to and perpendicular to the roll front. Variograms calculated in unfolded space show strong directional anisotropies consistent with the anticipated configuration of the deposit.

"Mineworkers are routinely tasked with making critically important decisions about whether or not a hazard presents an imminent danger. Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health collected formative data to investigate mine safety professional perspectives on workplace examinations, which revealed a potential gap in how mineworkers are assessing risk. During interviews, participants revealed not having a systematic methodology for mineworkers to use to determine if a hazard is considered imminent danger. In this paper, we identify and describe three distinct categories of imminent danger complexity and discuss potential steps that could lead to improved identification of imminent danger situations. Finally, we identify potential practices to incorporate into risk management efforts, including feedback, communication and specialized training, to increase awareness of imminent danger situations. IntroductionIn recent years, the metal and nonmetal mining sector, as categorized by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), experienced an increase in the number of fatalities occurring at mine sites. From 2013 to 2015, 69 mineworkers were fatally injured, twice the number of fatalities in each of the previous two years (MSHA, 2015a). As a way to address this increase, MSHA issued its P15- IV-01 program policy letter, suggesting that “miners would benefit from rigorous workplace examinations conducted by experienced and trained examiners” (MSHA, 2015b). The goal of these examinations is to find hazards in the field and mitigate them before they cause injury or death to mineworkers. While it is important to identify all hazards in the workplace, it is critically important to identify those hazards that are considered imminent danger because they require an immediate response to avoid a severe or even fatal injury."

Starting in 1980, a committee of the National Research Council studied the question of why some underground coal mines are safer than others and what could be done to improve the ones with poorer performance. The results indicated that safety is improved by management commitment to safety, by cooperation between labor and management on safety matters, and by quality training of employees and managers. Younger mines have higher accident frequencies, but are less likely to be killed or permanently disabled by a lost-time accident. Methods for improving safety performance are proposed.

"Acid rock drainage (ARD) is produced when sulfides are exposed to oxygen and water. Oxidation reactions typically result in a depression of pH and leaching of solutes and metals. Many oxidation models have been developed based on oxygen diffusion, but in environments with high permeability, other transport processes (i.e., convection and advection) can play an important role. Multiple sulfide mineral phases with differing oxidation rates should also be incorporated. WROC, a finite-difference model, was developed to account for these factors in predicting ARD. The program includes sulfide mineral oxidation using a shrinking core mechanism, heat transfer by conduction, heat of reaction and oxygen transport by diffusion and advection. The model was validated using data from the literature. After validation, the WROC model was used to simulate several different waste rock scenarios, including different forms of sulfide mineralization and the effect of implementing a waste rock cover. The results demonstrate that including specific sulfide mineral phases can have a significant effect on oxidation and that implementation of a cover can also aid in reducing waste rock oxidation.IntroductionAcid rock drainage (ARD) is a notable environmental concern in areas where rock or other material with acid generation potential is disturbed. ARD is defined as drainage that occurs as a result of sulfide oxidation in rock exposed to air and water. ARD is characterized by low pH, elevated metals concentration (especially aluminum, iron and manganese), sulfate and high total dissolved solids. The low-pH water that results from acid generation is capable of solubilizing heavy metals contained within the rock. The principal sulfide mineral in mine wastes is pyrite (FeS2). Pyrite oxidation is complex and can involve chemical and biological reactions. Oxidation of pyrite by atmospheric oxygen produces one mole of Fe2+, two moles of SO4 2- and two moles of H+ for every mole of pyrite oxidized, as described by Eq. (1)."

I welcome this opportunity to give a Congressman's birdseye view of a subject which I believe holds great potential for the future in helping meet the needs of people, with minimal adverse impact on the environment. All mankind, not just the people in this great nation, faces the need for additional usable space. In some parts of the United States the problem arises from rapid urbanization of the surface and little utilization of the subsurface. Everywhere there is an increasing problem of insufficient space arising out of the increasing population crush and growing demands for open space, housing, water, transportation, communication, and social service. You are the technicians to whom we look for assistance in finding answers. We look to you also to provide guidance for broad policy decisions concerning underground space. I prepared for a career practicing law, but since 1952 I have been a member of the House of Representatives. In this latter capacity I deal with programs designed to help solve all kinds of problems. But, naturally, I am especially interested in the water scarcity and other environmental problems of my home state of Arizona and the arid and semi-arid areas in the West. This North American Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference has as its theme: "Tomorrow's Tunneling Technology Today." I have a very great interest in this potential of our underground space resource. The Central Arizona Project now getting underway in my state will consist in part of tunnels and underground pipelines to convey life-sustaining water from the Colorado River to people and lands across Arizona to the Phoenix and Tucson areas.

The Meikle Mine is located in the northeastern part of Nevada in the gold-rich Carlin Trend. First discovered in 1989, Meikle is being developed into a 2.2-kt/d (2,500-stpd) underground mine that will open during the second half of 1996. Work has already been completed on the mine’s cooling plant, a necessary item due to the high rock temperature and the hot ground water. In North American mines, there has been little need for refrigerated cooling. Therefore, Barrick needed to draw on experience from elsewhere in the world — particularly South Africa — to meet these requirements. The history of cooling mines using mechanical refrigeration dates back to the 1920s at Morro Velho in Brazil and 1936 at Ooregum in India (Dobson,1940 and Biccard, 1946). From 1940 to 1960, several cooling plants were installed on the deep level gold mines on the Witwatersrand in South Africa. These were followed by similar installations on the mines in the Klerksdorp, Welkom, Evander, Rustenburg and Thabazimbi areas. The first mine cooling plant in Germany was built during 1976.
