"The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted underground evaluations in an attempt to quantify respirable rock dust generation when using untreated rock dust and rock dust treated with an anticaking additive. Using personal dust monitors, these evaluations measured respirable rock dust levels arising from a flinger-type application of rock dust on rib and roof surfaces. Rock dust with a majority of the respirable component removed was also applied in NIOSH’s Bruceton Experimental Mine using a bantam duster. The respirable dust measurements obtained downwind from both of these tests are presented and discussed. This testing did not measure miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust under acceptable mining practices, but indicates the need for effective continuous administrative controls to be exercised when rock dusting to minimize the measured amount of rock dust in the sampling device IntroductionTwo recent regulations have modified operators’ rock dusting schedules in order to meet compliance standards. First, the 80 percent incombustible requirement in intake entries has increased both on-section and out by the- section rock dusting. Secondly, the recent change to the respirable dust regulation has increased the number of respirable dust samples taken per sampling cycle. Previously, when only five samples were needed bimonthly, rock dusting could be scheduled to not interfere with the respirable dust sampling schedule.The significant number of samples now required under new regulations, combined with the need to maintain 80 percent total incombustible content in active mining areas, require the schedules for respirable dust sampling and rock dusting to overlap. Although rock dust is considered a nuisance dust in relation to U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) sampling, these overlapping schedules raise concerns about the amount of rock dust that potentially is included in the sample. Additionally, the respirable dust maximum was lowered from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 effective Aug. 1, 2016, increasing concern that rock dust contamination may be an issue (MSHA, 2016). Currently, the acceptable practice is to apply administrative controls such as keeping the miners upwind during rock dust application, or to schedule rock dusting during a maintenance shift when the number of miners present is lower."

Some of you may be old enough to remember -- as I do -- the early days of World War II. A highly prepared, well-equipped Japanese striking force had moved like lightning across the South Pacific islands and Southeastern Asia. As the invasion force pushed its way down the Malaysian Peninsula, Singapore stood serene and beautiful, protected by its natural moat of water, busy as ever with its commercial pursuits. One can see its captains of trade and industry now, sitting com¬fortably on the veranda of the "Singapore Country Club", sipping scotch between cricket games, convinced that the weary, logistically extended Japanese force couldn't possibly cross over to their island which had been so secure for a hundred' years or more. No need to remind you what happened. The brave men in their ships at sea and in the gun emplacements ashore were hopelessly out-gunned and out-maneuvered.

"This study explores froth flotation and selective flocculation methods to recycle waste phosphors containing several rare earth elements, namely, yttrium (Y), europium (Eu), cerium (Ce) and terbium (Tb). The effects of the presence or absence of collector and of flocculant and their dosages, as well as the pH, were investigated. Reverse flotation resulted in concentrates with grade of 27.03 percent and recovery rate of 71.36 percent, while flocculation resulted in concentrates with grade of 31.43 percent and recovery rate of 91.28 percent. The flotation and flocculation behaviors were further analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, zeta potential measurements, particle size distribution and other methods. The successful separation of rare earth minerals by flotation was attributed to the selective adsorption of the collector onto quartz, making it particularly recoverable by reverse flotation so as to be separated from the valuable materials. The analysis of the particle aggregation process indicated that its better flocculation performance was due to the selective adsorption of flocculants onto the unwanted materials, enlarging the flocculant sizes by forming aggregations and facilitating the separation of rare earth minerals from waste materials based on different settling rates. IntroductionBecause waste phosphors pose the problems of heavy environmental burden and high risk to human health (Hu and Cheng, 2012) as a result of containing heavy metals such as mercury and manganese (He et al., 2006; Lucas and Emery, 2006), they have received added attention as urban mining resources for extracting rare earth elements (REEs) like yttrium (Y), europium (Eu), cerium (Ce) and terbium (Tb).At present, chemical processes such as acid leaching, alkali fusion, roasting and extraction are the primary methods for recovering REEs from waste phosphors (De Michelis et al., 2011; Li et al., 2012; Li, 2010). With these strategies, phosphors can be effectively decomposed and their REEs extracted. After the removal of impurities, the REEs can be efficiently precipitated by adding an H2C2O4 solution (Porob et al., 2012). Although relatively high recovery rates are achieved, those processes entail high energy consumption and can cause severe environmental pollution."

This paper will be concerned with those mineable coal measures at depths necessitating deep mine operations in the range of 200 feet to 800 feet in depth. The area is generally classified as the Southern Illinois Field but more specifically includes that part of the state south of a line extending from St. Louis, Missouri on the west to Vincennes, Indiana, on the east. This embraces an area which presently includes a total of 38 shipping mines and 5 local or truck mines. Of these shipping mines, 22 are deep (shaft or slope) mines and the remaining 16 are strips. The average annual production of the shipping mines is around 29 million tons. The presently classified mineable reserves of the area are estimated at around 70 billion tons.

One of the most difficult challenges in underground mining is to forecast significant seismic events prior to their occurrence in order to support the safety of miners and to minimize damage to the underground operation. Passive seismic tomography is a tool to image the seismic velocity changes in a rockmass, which can potentially reveal the rockmass behavior before and after a significant seismic event. In this paper, the changes in seismic velocity of the rockmass before and after three major seismic events are investigated to determine whether there are identifiable precursory velocity changes associated with the major seismic events. Conventional mechanics imply that the induced stress at the hypocenter would continue increasing until failure, in the form of an induced seismic event, occurs. With passive seismic tomography we can image changes to the seismic wave velocity distribution within a rockmass and hence infer the changes to the induced stress near the hypocenter. This paper evaluates the hypothesis that induced stress at the hypocenter (as inferred by the p-wave velocity) increases until the seismic event occurs. In addition to analyzing p-wave velocity changes near the hypocenter, changes to the p-wave velocity at “zone centers” were also analyzed. These “zone centers” are regions within the rockmass that consistently have a p-wave velocity that is much higher than the average p-wave velocity for the rockmass. It is found that the p-wave velocity did not increase at any of the three hypocenters prior to the seismic event occurring, however the p-wave velocity did increase in the closest “zone center” for two of the three events.

This morning I would like to speak to you about an area of chemistry that is enjoying a revival-organometallic compounds. This renewed interest, principally stimulated by defense needs, has already created new markets for the products of the mineral industry. Although the consumption of metals in these new products is modest at oresent, several hold promise of importance. Because this is a new and growing market, I am sure the Council of Economics is aware of many of its facets and is interested in new developments. Of course, the chemical industry has been a significant consumer of minerals for many years. I estimate that in 1957 the chemical-industry purchased a total of $1175 million worth of minerals as raw materials (not including fuels). "This paper presents the evaluation Montana Tech completed for the Western Energy Company Rosebud Mine relating to the benefits of survey data collected using novel technologies over traditional methods for topographic surveys. These technologies include Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), photogrammetry, and laser scanning/LIDAR. Utilizing these technologies, large areas such as reclamation areas and cast blasts can be surveyed in a timely manner for use by the mining operation. The areas that were evaluated were the improvements in the safety of employees and the time required to collect data. In addition, there is also a potential cost savings for the operation, all while not affecting the accuracy of the data that is collected. PROJECT BACKGROUND Accurate topographic survey data is critical to successful surface mining operations. It is used for mine planning and design as well as permit compliance. Currently, employees typically collect survey data using GPS equipment or total stations. These methods can be dangerous, as they require employees to work near large operating mobile equipment, edge of high walls, and on piles of stacked steep-sloped loose material. Aerial and satellite photographs, performed by a contractor, can be used to obtain some of this information, but it is expensive and may not be attainable during overcast conditions. Montana Tech, along with the Rosebud Mine, conducted research on the accuracy, cost, and other benefits of survey data collected using novel technologies. Some of the methods studied include, but are not limited to, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) or Vehicles (UAV), photogrammetry, and laser scanning. These methods were evaluated to determine if these technologies provide mining companies with a safer, cost effective, and accurate method to collect data for surface mining operations. The project scope was to evaluate various surveying techniques to determine which techniques would be applicable for the Rosebud Mine and complete a trade-off study comparing the new techniques with currently used methods. The trade-off study included an analysis of the technological differences between the methods, safety and legal considerations for the new techniques, operational limits, and the costs associated with each technique. Working with the Rosebud Mine team, techniques were selected for field trial and accuracy comparison. This paper presents a literature review of applicable technical papers and a summary of the Federal Aviation Administration regulations for UAS, followed by a study comparing conventional GPS topographic surveys with UAS based systems and laser scanning systems. The comparison of the various methods was broken into the following four categories: operator safety analysis, time comparison, survey accuracy, and cost analysis. After all of these portions of comparison were completed a recommendation was provided based on the evaluation that was performed."

The conventional role of exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Nine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described. In summary, the role of the geological, the engineering and the mining department is presented in relation to the contribution each has to make in the evaluation and exploitation of ore from one of the world's classic Archean gold deposits.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) is the largest manufacturer of iron ore pellets in Canada and its customer base covers North American, European and Asian steel producers. The company operates a mine, concentrator and a pelletizing plant in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as port facilities located in Sept-Iles, Quebec. It also operates a 418-km (260-mile) railroad that links the mine to the port. IOC has approximately 1,900 employees. Its shareholders are Mitsubishi Corp. (26.18 percent), Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Income Fund (15.1 percent) and the international mining group Rio Tinto, which is its major shareholder (58.72 percent) and operator, with activities in more than 40 countries throughout the world. The IOC was incorporated in 1949 and by 1954 it had completed the Quebec North Shore and Labrador (QNS&L) rail line. IOC began mining in Schefferville, Quebec by 1954 and closed those operations down in 1982. In 1962, IOC commissioned the present day Carol Project consisting of mining, concentration and pelletizing facilities in Labrador City, Newfoundland. In 2004, IOC shipped its one-billionth tonne of ore on the QNS&L Railway. In 2005, IOC celebrated 50 years of mining history. The company expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1 m x 1 m x 1 m or 3.2 ft x 3.2 ft x 3.2 ft) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects, including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal, an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine that, to date, has significantly improved upon baseline measures. One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduced the infiltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rockmass, resulting in reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muckpiles. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realized. To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used a first-of-kind technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A digital vision system (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with GPS locations. A large population of digital images were analyzed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

In 2009, the Gold Quarry openpit mine experienced multiple large-scale slope failures of the upper east highwall that reduced gold ore extraction for nearly 18 months. The slope failures occurred within a weak, consolidated sedimentary sequence that exhibits strength characteristics that are transitional between soil and rock. Instability initiated as mining exposed the lower, high plasticity subunits of the Carlin Formation. This deformation created preferential flow paths that allowed ground water from the upper sandy subunits to infiltrate low-permeability, clay-rich subunits, thereby enhancing deformation of the slope toe, which, in turn, destabilized the upper portion of the highwall. The outcome was a 160 m high slope failure that had a lateral run-out of 850 m. The effort to return the pit to ore production required geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations and the preliminary remediation mining activity to be concurrent. This required the development of detailed safety procedures and a requirement to modify the remediation design as new results were obtained. An initial challenge was to mitigate a near vertical, 90 m headscarp with localized, blast-induced slope failures. Back-analyses with numerical modeling software indicated that the failure surface could be shallower, which contradicted the initial failure interpretations. Eventually, drilling results confirmed this alternative failure geometry. The final remediation design incorporated shallower slope geometries and an approximately 3 Mt buttress along the base of the Carlin Formation and bedrock contact to reinforce the subunits with residual strength properties. The results are a stable highwall within the Carlin Formation following nearly 10 years of repeated slope failures, and an example of the necessity to conduct appropriate geotechnical and hydrogeological studies during the early stages of a new layback evaluation or new openpit development.

Numerous researchers have addressed the complexity of the direct flotation separation of apatite from low-grade phosphate ore. The majority of these studies were limited to the micro-flotation scale. In fact, there is no warranty that a reagent scheme that showed a direct flotation of apatite at a micro-flotation scale on pure minerals would automatically replicate the same expected results on the natural ore in the mechanical flotation cell and so was the case for the phosphate ore studied. The overall trend was concentrating apatite in the non-float product. This study aspired to thoroughly assess the flotation performance of this never-exploited low-grade sedimentary phosphate using design of experiments (DOE). Unveiling new insights on such a strategy twist, various parameters and operating conditions, namely, desliming, type of collector and depressant, reagents dosages, conditioning times, flotation time, and pH, were addressed by multiple-factor screening using asymmetrical fractional factorial design followed by statistical interpretations. The collectors tested were the sodium oleate and a fatty acid mixture (FAM). The depressants tested were sodium alginate (NaAL), corn starch, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), and sodium silicate. The results of the multivariable analysis revealed that desliming, pH, collector dosage, and flotation time significantly influenced the flotation process. Desliming was beneficial for the yield, P2O5 recovery, and SiO2 removal; however, there was still a compromise between grade and recovery. A strongly alkaline pH value of 12 stood out from the whole range. P2O5, CO2, and SiO2 grades of the products and flotation recoveries were improved, except for P2O5 recovery, which was negatively affected. A collector dosage between 2000 and 3000 g/t increased the P2O5 grade and reduced CO2 grade and recovery, enhancing the apatite/carbonates separation. A flotation time of 15 min was significant for P2O5 grade and CO2 recovery, nevertheless, at the expense of yield and P2O5 recovery. The products having initial concentrates of 28.08% P2O5 with a recovery of 88.96% and 29.41% P2O5 with a recovery of 62.71% were obtained using 25 g/t of NaAL and 2000 g/t of the collector FAM and sodium oleate, respectively, at pH 12.

Talc, as a mineral, is rather widespread, but as an ore sultable for mining, it is rather limited. Materials sold as "talc" range from the impeccable white material from Italy to a gray-green-bluish material from Virginia. Some uses of the material called "talc" seem to be determined by the color of the material, some by the chemistry of the material, and some by the particle size of the ground material. But, there seems to be some overlapping of criteria used to judge the acceptability of a raw material. So then, any producer of talc material that is not a consumer of this raw material is faced with the age-old problems: "what do I call the stuff, and to whom should I try to sell it?" The answer to the first part is easy: if you want a high price, call it "talc"; if you want a low price, call it "soapstone". This may seem like a very simplified answer, but it is apparent that some of the products sold as "talc" have more than a minor amount of impurities in them; whereas, if they were called "soapstone", these same products would probably get a lower price.

"Foreword by Ren BryceSenior engineer, Freeport-McMoRan, Oro Valley, AZ, USAThe eighth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the national SME Annual Conference & Expo in Denver, CO. A total of 33 students presented their work at the poster competition. The competition started in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes.The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the competition. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. The first-place winner receives $1,000; the second, $500; the third, $250; and the fourth through seventh, $200. All remaining students receive $100. All of the students also receive a complimentary ticket to the MPD Luncheon. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates.Graduate winnersKaustubh Shrimali won first place for researching “The influence of starch in amine adsorption by quartz in the reverse flotation of iron ore.” Venkata Atluri received second for studying “The effect of polysaccharides on bubble attachment at talc surfaces.” Jennifer Galvin placed third for investigating “A novel approach to alkali pug bake for the extraction of rare earth elements from monazite concentrate.” In the fourth through seventh places were Amy Richins, Sumedh Gostu, Brett Carlson and Chris Vass.Undergraduate winnersNestor Santa earned first place for exploring “Copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards.” Cassidy O’Connell received second place for conducting “Performance analysis of CMC in high talc copper sulfide flotation systems.” Catalina Vanegas won third place for examining “Cyanidation tests and pretreatments to recover gold from a refractory ore in Colombia.” Kylie Boyce, Michael Archambo and Pritam Sinha were in the fourth through sixth places.Everyone benefits from attending the student poster competition. Of increasing importance to the student of fuels economics has been the extent to which different primary energy sources can substitute for each other in the various energy markets of the nation. Knowledge of the nature and extent of fuel interchangeability can aid the fuels economist in projecting trends of energy utilization, as well as giving him a better understanding of the past and present conditions of fuel markets. It is also important to the consumer to know just how much flexibility he can maintain in his energy consuming operations. And, finally, various governmental bodies show keen interest in the degree of energy substitutability in determining public policies concerning the fuels industries. The presence of excess fuel production capacity in the United States during the early 1960's indicates that fuel interchangeability should become more prevalent in the increasingly competitive energy markets of the nation. Discussion of fuel intercompetition is almost always restricted to qualitative terms-because of the lack of comparable statistical data, between the different energy sources in geographic or "type-of-use" fuel, markets. There are exceptions, of course, such as, the excellent fuel consumption data which are available on steam electric generating plants throughout the nation. In other sectors, statistics are at best incomplete.' Inmost instances, indirect fuel consumption indicators, such as sales of fuel burning equipment, are extensively used to measure market shares of a particular fuel; however, these indicators are hard to evaluate precisely without prior knowledge of the total competitive market.

The organic, inorganic, and radiological characteristics of airborne aerosols have been measured as a function of particle size in controlled atmosphere test chambers and operating uranium mines. Concentrations of benzo(a)pyrene in two mines ranged from 26 to 57 ng/m3 of air. The carbon chain length of adsorbed n-alkanes was correlated with particle size. Normal mining activities produced an ore dust aerosol with mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) greater than 2 µm. The elements Na, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Fe, and U exhibited elemental ratios similar to bulk ore and had comparable MMAD's. The S, Zn, and Pb were higher in aerosols than bulk ore and were associated with smaller MMAD particulates. Radon daughter particle size distributions were influenced by the kinds of particulates

The request to participate on your theme panel was accepted with some reluctance but indeed as an honor. My subject was outlined to cover 'Energy Resources - both nuclear and conventional' as related to your theme 'Minerals - Treasure Trove of the West'. This is indeed quite an order and I hope you will forgive me for concentrating mainly on the nuclear-uranium portion with brief references only to conventional fuels some of which will be covered in detail later in your conference. In regard to Uranium, I am speaking on the fringe of the area containing half the uranium reserves in your country and no doubt to many who are very conversant with knowledge of these resources. Nevertheless since our two countries have been very closely allied in both nuclear developments and uranium supplies I hope an exchange of information may be mutually beneficial. Concentration on the nuclear fuel resources is I hope understandable as nuclear energy is the coming source of power which will augment the rapid demand in the industrialized countries and provides hope for economic power in many of the more underdeveloped countries. The situation regarding conventional fuel resources is more widely known and their expanding future revolves around production cost reductions, research into diversified uses, plus more assurance of imports from countries less effected by international controversies determining export policies.

Tracer gas sampling methods are useful for monitoring ventilation systems, especially in remote or inaccessible areas, and can be utilized for analysis of the ventilation system immediately following a mine emergency. However, the success of this technique is largely dependent on the accuracy of release and sampling methods. Analysis of sampling methods is crucial for rapid response and dependable results during emergencies. For the purpose of this study, four well-accepted sampling techniques currently used in the mining industry were compared using solid-phase microextraction (SPMe) fibers with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), an industry standard, as the tracer gas. Current sample collection techniques include plastic syringes, glass syringes, Tedlar bags and vacutainers. SPMe fibers are used in a variety of industries, from forensics to environmental sampling, and are a solventless method of sampling analytes. To analyze these sampling methods, samples were taken from a 0.01 % standard mixture of SF6 and nitrogen and analyzed using electron capture gas chromatography. A relative standard error of less than 10% validated results to compare the accuracy of various methods. The technical and practical issues surrounding each sampling method were also observed and discussed.

Underground longwall coal mining sections are operated as sealed gobs if the coal is prone to spontaneous combustion. Sealing along the gate roads during longwall face retreat limits the flow of fresh air (oxygen) into the gob and, thus, deprives the spontaneous combustion reaction of oxygen. In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have used computational fluid dynamics modeling to simulate the flow of gases in sealed longwall gobs. The models were validated using measurements and observations from the field and demonstrate that targeted injection of nitrogen along the gate roads inby the face can be used to control the size and location of explosive methane clouds within the gob and to minimize or eliminate the explosion hazard resulting from the formation of flammable methane-air mixtures.

"With increasing demand for steel and depletion of high-grade iron ore deposits, more research efforts are being directed toward extending the life of existing ore reserves and developing technology to treat low-grade iron ore resources. Among all the reported technologies, biotechnologies in mineral processing – specifically bioleaching and microbially induced flotation – have emerged to be considered as low-cost, environmentally friendly potential alternatives to many of the current mineral processing techniques. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current research on the use of microorganisms for iron ore beneficiation and, further, discusses the applicability of bioleaching, bioflotation and bioflocculation for the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores.IntroductionIncreasing global demand for raw materials has led to diminishing resources of high-grade iron ore. As a result, the mining and utilization of low-grade hematite, limonite, specularite, siderite and goethite ores have attracted more and more attention. However, these types of iron ores are of complex paragenesis and fine disseminated grain size, and often contaminated by phosphorus in the form of solid solution. The distribution of phosphorus throughout the iron mineral crystals prevents the effective use of physical separation techniques, and these complex ores are at present largely untapped due to a lack of cost-effective and efficient processing methods. Chemical leaching and roasting-magnetic separation approaches have been mainly tested only on the laboratory scale and are all either cost prohibitive or ineffective when used on low-grade complex iron ores."

"The use of recycled water in flotation has significant effects on flotation and selectivity because the recycled water contains many dissolved compounds and ions that alter the chemistry of the system. In this study, the effects of calcium, magnesium and sulfate, which are abundant components in recycled water, were investigated on galena, sphalerite and pyrite flotation using pure minerals and a complex sulfide ore by conducting bench-scale flotation, microflotation and zeta potential measurements. The bench-scale flotation tests indicated that higher recoveries of galena and sphalerite are obtained when water is recycled, due to higher concentrations of ions in recycled water. However, there was a critical ion concentration for galena recovery. The microflotation tests showed that galena recoveries at different pHs in recycled water are lower than in tap and distilled water. Pure sphalerite recoveries improved in recycled water in the bench-scale test with ore. Pure pyrite was depressed with recycled water as well. Zeta potentials became less negative with increased calcium and magnesium ion concentrations due to their adsorptions, and the presence of sulfate ions was seen to increase the negative charges of sphalerite and pyrite, conversely for galena. IntroductionWater is among the most important elements for mining and mineral processing. The distance to water sources is one of the major factors for mine site selection. The mining and mineral processing sector needs and consumes large quantities of water. In Chile in 2014, the copper mining sector alone consumed 12.7 m3/s fresh water for 1.189 tons of ore processing, and recycled 74 percent of the consumed water (Chilean Copper Commission, 2015). A plant that does not reuse or recycle any water will require 1.9 to 3.0 m3 of water per ton of ore processed (Gunson et al., 2012). Many stages of mineral processing, such as grinding, gravity concentration, dense medium separation, wet magnetic separation, flotation and hydrometallurgical operations, use large volumes of water (Schumann, Levay and Ametov, 2009).In mineral processing plants, the process water is recycled from the tailings dams, thickener overflows, and dewatering and filtration units. Wet concentration processes can require large quantities of water. Flotation, the most common process, typically takes place at 25 to 35 percent solids by mass. Most flotation plants practice at least some water reuse and recycled. Modern mines and mineral processing operations generally aim for zero water release (Levay, Smart and Skinner, 2001). In most cases, water quality has been found to affect flotation performance, and this interaction remains under investigation."
