Smooth roll crushers are widely used as secondary crushers, operating most effectively when set for size reductions in a ratio between 3 or 4 to I. The feed supplied to these units varies from 13 to 102 mm in size and the product obtained ranges from 13 mm to about 20 mesh. Smooth roll crushers produce very few fines and absolutely no oversize. The diameter otfhe rolls varies with the clearance between them, feed size, and the coefficient of internal friction ofmaterial to be crushed, Detailed calculations of this relationship may be found in Unit operations of Chemical Engineering, (McCabe, W. L., and Smith, J. C., 1967, McGraw Hill, NY, Chapter 26, pg. 825). The geometrical arrangement of the roll crusher is shown on the accompanying sketch. A load rating procedure was performed to evaluate safe load capacity of the Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT), FDOT Tunnel No. 871071 SR 887. The rating procedure performed on a total of eleven stations beneath roadways and with fill depth less than the tunnel exterior diameter (42 ft). Calculations on tunnel sections passing beneath roadways were performed to evaluate the structural response of the sections subject to moving vehicular loads, dead load, and earth pressures. Ratings were performed in accordance with AASHTO and FDOT guidelines. The procedure considered two types of vehicles (HL-93 and FL-120) and two rating levels (Design level and Permit level). As part of HL-93 vehicle, Tandem load was also considered for rating, separately. For HL-93 and HL-93 Tandem, inventory and operating level ratings were performed. The results show rating factors are high. The minimum rating factor is 16.8 using Inventory truck HL-93. For Permit level using FDOT FL-120 truck the minimum rating factor is 6.9. As can be seen, rating factors are higher than comparable analysis for bridges. This paper explains how the procedure can be implemented for tunnels and evaluates the rating results.

If it had not been for the almost unbelievable adventures that came before and after, the last ten months of 19 15 would have been exciting enough for anyone. As it was they were a cheerful interlude. I spent most of the time on our Warren operations catching up on a lot of underground work and visiting Ajo every few weeks to see if my Chuquicamata visit might help solve the New Cornelia problem. While the difficulties were finally solved, at times they seemed almost hopeless. About all I could do to help was to make sure that the ore sent to the pilot plants represented the average ore that must be treated in the final 5000 tpd mill. Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway worked tirelessly with the best consulting advice they could obtain. Credit for the final success was due chiefly to their efforts. Since our old group had given up its "Merry Widow" home in Warren, a few of us got rooms in the company-built Cole Building over the Warren grocery store. This included Jim Lewis, Roy Mitchell, Steve Landon, Paul Stevens, and Hubert d'Autremont who came from Duluth to join our legal staff. Later we rented a small house two blocks from the Calumet and Arizona office. With the now flourishing country club only a 10-min walk away, and an electric car running to it every half hour or so, we were able to give parties in return for the hospitality of our friends. One of the most pleasant episodes came by luck a few days after I got back from Chile. Chester Congdon, a leading director in Calumet and Arizona, with his wife and their daughters, Elizabeth and Helen, spent a couple of days at the Greenway house before making an auto- mobile trip across the desert from Tucson to Ajo. At the same time I arranged to examine the small but rich Bush and Baxter copper mine a few miles from Tucson. Marble is a preferred surfacing material in up-scale buildings. Its use increased in the 1870's with rising national wealth and declined in the 1950's when synthetic materials for these applications were developed. Natural marble is now limited to high-end domestic and commercial structures. Cultured marble is a paste of white marble dust and polyester resin cured in molds yielding fixtures of specific finished dimensions. Dyes incorporated at different stages in the mixing cycle mimic shades and veining of natural marble. This paper discusses the filler requirements for cultured marble production and reviews new techniques to cut and finish natural marble.

"Justified is a show on FX that takes place in Kentucky coal country. The two main characters, a cop named Raylan and a criminal named Boyd, are adversarial to the very end, yet they manage to maintain a seemingly inexplicable bond of friendship through it all. The final episode ends (spoiler alert) with Boyd asking Raylan why that is. He responds, “If I allow myself to be sentimental, there is one thing I wander back to” Boyd responds, “We dug coal together.” Fade to black.What creates these types of bonds between friends and co-workers in mining? I don’t know about you, but many of my best friends I met in mining. Certainly the people I respect the most in this world are a part of our industry. Good, honest, honorable men and women. And I am not just talking about the leaders of our industry. I am talking about great miners who taught me how to do the right thing and also be productive.I have had the pleasure to work for some great people and the misfortune of working for some of the loudest screamers. What I consider the worst butt-chewing in my life may surprise you. I once worked for a man I respected, because he showed me respect. He went on a business trip and left some instructions. For some reason, I was able to justify to myself that they applied to everybody but me, and I disobeyed them. When he returned he called me into his office and said to me: “Tim, you pissed me off when you did that.” He said it quietly and with no anger. I had lost his respect. This devastated me more than any screaming shift boss ever could have. I learned a lot about values from that conversation.Most of us will spend more time at work than we will with our families over a lifetime. It is natural that tight bonds be created at work. What I believe makes mining special is that these bonds are so strong. They are strengthened by the incredibly hard work our miners do. They work at all hours, on holidays and in all sorts of extreme weather conditions. The physical demands of the job are sometimes exhausting. Our bonds are further reinforced because the work is dangerous. Not only does management watch out for the wellbeing of their people, but each and every one of us looks out for one another. The bonds are made tight because our people are so passionate about what they do, no matter the department or profession. Finally, they are strong because of the thousands in the industry that keep doing the right thing, every day. We make great friends in this industry because of the strength of character of our people. That is why Boyd and Raylan respected one another so much."

The attapulgite industry saw a year of solid growth after a weaker 2003. Demand was up between 5 percent and 6 percent driven by almost all of the key markets. Construction continued to show record new housing demand, assisted by continued low interest rates. That drove strong growth in construction related markets like coatings, tape joint compounds and other construction materials applications. The agricultural markets rebounded modestly to increase sales for suspension fertilizers, animal feeds and pesticide carriers. Oil drilling also showed strong growth due to high oil and gas prices. Sales to molecular sieve applications grew due to petrochemical and construction demand. The export markets were assisted by further depreciation of the dollar. The only weak area was in nonagricultural granular sorbents, where other sorbent materials continued to dominate.

Refractory copper ores (CROs) in central Africa contain copper minerals that are locked up in a micacious solid matrix or associated with carbonate, sulfide and phosphate minerals. Several researchers have reported that the recovery of copper from CRO material by an acid-leaching process is not economically feasible, due to the presence of excess gangue-acid-consuming minerals such as calcites, dolomite, asbolane and iron oxides. Since the proportion of acid-insoluble copper (CuS) is about 28% of total copper and total free sulfur is extremely small, sulfide flotation was considered unfavorable. Consequently, hundreds of millions of tons of CRO material have been stockpiled specifically at the Nchanga Mine of Zambia. In terms of copper distribution in CRO material, a significant portion of total copper exists as carbonates (39%) and oxides (17%), while 28% of the copper is acidinsoluble (CuS). The rest of the copper is in the form of carbonates (16%) and (hydr) oxides (17%). This means that only about 72% of total copper is recoverable through the non-oxidative acid-leaching process. In this study, batch leach tests were performed on CRO solids (d95 = 95%) to establish the gangue acid consumption values at different feed pH values and to evaluate the leaching characteristics of copper, manganese and iron within the CRO material. Subsequently, continuous leach tests were performed on CRO solids (106 um, 80% passing) using optimum leach conditions derived from batch tests. This paper aims to show that sustainable copper recovery can be achieved by selecting leaching conditions whereby gangue acid consumption (GAC) values become significantly small and the final concentration of manganese and iron in the leach solution are appreciably low.

This paper presents the results of a study of case histories of projects on which sinking caissons were used to construct shafts for tunnel construction and other underground works. Design methodologies are reviewed with respect to the impact of soil and groundwater conditions on the performance and constructability of sinking caissons. Factors which have led to success or failure are reviewed and evaluated, and recommendations for future investigation, design and construction activities are presented. Cost data for five recent projects are reviewed and compared to the cost of shaft installation by other means.

The Pebble Cu-Au-Mo deposit in southwest Alaska is one of the world's largest porphyry deposits. The western part of the deposit was discovered by Cominco America in 1987, who sold the project to Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd., in 2001. Northern Dynasty discovered the high-grade eastern part of the deposit in 2004 and went into a 50:50 partnership with Anglo American PLC in 2007, forming the Pebble Limited Partnership (Lang et al., 2008). The Pebble Limited Partnership has continued to delineate the deposit through diamond drilling with the most recent resource estimate released in February 2010 (Pebble Limited Partnership, 2010). The Pebble deposit mineral resources comprise 5.94 billion tonnes of measured and indicated resources grading 0.78% Cu EQ, containing 55 billion pounds of copper, 67 million ounces of gold and 3.3 billion pounds of molybdenum. Also delineated are 4.84 billion tonnes of inferred mineral resources grading 0.53% Cu EQ, containing 25.6 billion pounds of copper, 40.4 million ounces of gold and 2.3 billion pounds of molybdenum (Pebble Limited Partnership, 2010). Resources are calculated using a 0.3% Cu EQ cutoff. GEOLOGY AND MINERALIZATION Deposit Geology The Pebble deposit is located in the Kahiltna terrane, between terminal strands of the north-east-striking Lake Clarke strike-slip fault. This fault represents an accretionary boundary and separates the Kahiltna terrane to the north-west from the Peninsular terrane to the south-east (Lang et al., 2008). The Pebble deposit represents a large magmatic-hydrothermal system centered on a group of 90 million year old porphyritic hornblende granodiorite intrusions. An east-west cross section through the southern part of the deposit (Figure 1A) shows the typical relationships between the various rock units which host sulfide mineralization. Sub-parallel ~96 million year old granodiorite and diorite sills were intruded into siltstones of the Jura-Cretaceous Kahiltna flysch. In the west, these sills were cut by a ~96 million year old alkalic intrusive complex composed of porphyritic monzonites and monzodiorites and related intrusion breccias (Bouley et al, 1995). The mineralized 90 million year old hornblende granodiorite intrusions cut all rock types and comprise four small stocks in the western part of the deposit and a larger pluton in the eastern part of the deposit. Recent deep drilling indicates that these intrusions coalesce at depth. The strongest porphyry-style mineralization is centered on the eastern granodiorite pluton and extends into the surrounding rock units (Figure 1A). The western half of the deposit crops out at surface, whereas the eastern side is un-conformably overlain by a cover sequence of Late Cretaceous to Eocene sedimentary and volcanic strata. The deposit was tilted 20º to the east during the Eocene.

The author attempted to concurrently apply the US Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice and the Australian VALMIN Code to a complex mineral property appraisal assignment. This led the author into many severe difficulties. These difficulties included the high standards needed in the work of others, and information and statements needed from the client. The exercise also highlighted many positive features of both documents. Some conflicts were found between the two documents. Implications and thoughts regarding the development of a set of US minerals appraisal standards are discussed.

An algorithm used by the US Coast Guard to find lost objects is utilized to optimally allocate exploration efforts during initial stages of an exploration program. Based on classical search theory, the algorithm assumes a target probability distribution function, a detection func¬tion, and a cost function. The three Junctions are analogous to delineating areas of possible mineralization, choice of exploration methods, and exploration budget. Application of the algorithm is shown for a hypothetical target distribution. Using the maximum number of field days available as the cost function, the optimal allocation of effort is shown for different exploration methods, e.g. electromagnetic survey and induced polarization. The adaption of the algorithm for the exploration process is discussed.

The 29th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW) will be held at the JW Marriott Star Pass Resort, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011. Each year, one living inductee, two recipients of Medals of Merit, and up to five honorees from mining history are chosen by the MFSW for their outstanding contributions to the mining industry. Chilean Minister of Public Works and former Minister of Mining, Laurence Golborne Riveros will be the guest of honor, featured speaker and inductee into the American Mining Hall of Fame. Golborne Riveros was instrumental in managing the rescue of the 33 Chilean miners in October 2010 and in the coordination/management of the ?townsite? for family members, rescue support and the media. His engineering background and executive management skills made him ideally suited to assist in both a technical and managerial role in this emergency.

Land access and tenure certainty for exploration and mine development is absolutely critical to the foundation of a healthy, sustainable and environmentally-sound mineral exploration and mining sector. Without certainty, mineral exploration will be severely eroded, resulting in reduced possibility of discovering and developing new mines. The development of positive relationships based on a shared commitment of understanding, mutual respect and trust by First Nations and the mineral sector can provide this increased business certainty and social and economic benefits for local First Nations. As a sector, we face many challenges in regard to building relationships with First Nations. The root solution to addressing these challenges lies in recognizing and understanding the unique cultural differences that exist between indigenous people and the business community. From the Canadian perspective, the First Nations culture differs vastly from non-Aboriginal culture. It is equally as imperative that cultural differences be acknowledged and respected at home as they are when seeking business opportunities in other countries. The traditional “business” approaches and relationships that one understands and incorporates with one’s contractors, legal counsel, investors and Board are generally not be the best approach for the introductory and subsequent meetings with indigenous peoples. This paper is written from the perspective of my experiences accumulated over the past ten years, first as Manager of Aboriginal Affairs for one of the largest forest companies in British Columbia and now, as President and CEO of the Association for Mineral Exploration BC (AME BC). My opinions are not necessarily endorsed by AME BC. Before the gritty issues of consultation and benefit sharing are dealt with, it is worthwhile to clear up the confusion surrounding terminology. “Indigenous Peoples” is used in a global context; “Aboriginal Peoples” is used in the Canadian context therefore includes Métis, Inuit and First Nations Peoples. The term “First Nations”, in the context of British Columbia, perhaps has its roots in the fact that treaties have largely not been settled. Therefore it is important to reaffirm that British Columbia was not discovered. First Nations have resided in British Columbia since time immemorial.

Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 meters (8 feet) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting and saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can effectively prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile, implying that great care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a full depth of at least 2.4 meters (8 feet) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

Since Magma Copper Co. assumed operating management in December 1994, production and costs have improved dramatically.
