The metals industry is in complete chaos with mines being shut down, profits becoming non-existent, and continual losses to imports from other countries. Yet the raw material supplier to the glass industry has many opportunities to grow and to produce profits. Fortunately, the cost of most glass raw materials are low enough that competition from imports is not anywhere as critical as it is in the metal industries, such as copper, aluminum, lead, and others. But the glass raw material supplier must develop new products, both chemically and physically, to effectively compete in the future. The purpose of this paper is to point out generally where these opportunities exist and to suggest how they may be further developed. As the glass industry looks for energy saving materials, they look once again towards finer materials. A glass furnace is now approximately 40% efficient. Glass engineers are constantly striving for energy savings and it is well known that finer materials melt easier so that the manufacturer can operate his furnace either at lower temperatures for the same production or he can produce more material at the same temperature. The old 20 mesh sand specification is no longer sacred and as the mesh size for sand changes so do the specifications for all other raw materials used in the melting process. Highly instrumented glass furnaces can now measure quite accurately the energy needs to produce glass and can also measure the energy loss in each furnace. Glass technologists desire today a sand with a top size of 40 mesh while some would like to have the top at 60 mesh. This becomes more difficult to accomplish as a raw material supplier without .grinding. As you well know, grinding develops fines. Yet the same technologists will tell us that we can have nothing passing a 140 mesh screen. Therefore, we must develop processes which allows us to produce a finer screen size without increasing the amount of fines passing through the 140 mesh screen. To counteract this, different and changing industries are now demanding much finer products so possibly there will be markets for the fines which are currently separated out of the products. Methods that are practical and low cost must be found to develop different products with different screen specifications. What works for sand can be carried over to the other raw materials used in melting. Among the answers to finer products, of course, are pellets. Aglomeration or pelletizing has been looked at in the past and will be looked at in the future. Considerable work has been done in the glass container industry on this and must be carried out more extensively. By using aglomerated material or pellets, the glass producer will gain the benefits of melting fine materials without suffering from handling or dust problems. Pelletizing, particularly where using basic glass melting materials such as burned lime or sodium silicate, will not only produce a good pellets but will add desirable minerals to the glass batch.

"In order to construct an underground two-layer expressway branch junction structure with a height of 14.7 m and a width of 22.3 m, two shield tunnels in each layer were combined by using a non-cut-and-cover enlargement method in sedimentary soft rock. Before and during the construction work, preliminary analysis, in-situ investigations and laboratory tests were conducted to ensure the construction safety and to evaluate the deformation characteristics of sedimentary soft rock. The construction project was safely executed without any water leakage or collapse of tunnel working face. The predicted results from preliminary analysis were almost similar to the measured values. From the detailed investigation of measured results, it was confirmed that the deformation characteristic of the sedimentary soft rock was observed to a small extent as the ground deformation derived from construction work. INTRODUCTION In recent years, some newly constructed urban expressways in Japan are being planned as underground structures due to the consideration of roadside environment. The construction of such underground expressways is frequently conducted using a shield tunneling, a typical one of non-cut-and-cover methods, to prevent any adverse effect to traffic in arterial roads, operation of nearby commercial establishments, and daily lives of local residents during construction work. For underground urban expressway, the connections with existing road network on ground surface or on elevated sections are indispensable, which require the construction of an underground branch junction with large cross-section. This raises a technical difficulty regardless of the open-cut or non-open-cut construction method."

Since 1958, the Sifto Salt Division of Domtar, Inc., has operated the Goderich (Ontario) salt mine in Michigan basin bedded halite, with shafts located on Lake Huron's eastern bank. Initial mining utilized a conventional room and pi1lar pattern. However, roof deterioration developed. Incidence of progressive upward failure of saltback and over1yings ha1ey-do1omite layers intensified with entry aging. Studies were therefore initiated on new mining patterns utilizing the Serata Stress Control Method. Pursuant thereto, three test areas, indicated in the mine plan of Fig. 1, were designed and excavated. Full conversion to Stress Control mining was effected in January, 1983. This paper focusses on the instrumentation work in the third test area. Test Area 3 was designed to validate the excavation geometry of the new stress-controlled main entry system. The testing of that design was accomplished, in part, by comprehensive in situ stress, property, and deformation measurements on the performance of the model main entry section of Test Area 3. The paper describes: (1) the theoretical background of the SPDR/Stress Control Method; (2) specific problems and objectives addressed by the 1983 program of in situ measurements, (3) measurement results; and (4) conclusions drawn therefrom.

The Paupers Dream Property is located in the northern Boulder Mountains, southwestern Montana, 30 km southwest of Helena. The property is situated in the central portion of the Butte-Helena gold belt, a NE trending lineament marking a zone of recurrent, late-Cretaceous to mid-Tertiary volcanic activity. Geology consists of a plutonic basement of late-Cretaceous quartz monzonite overlain by a pre-volcanic basal conglomerate and a complex sequence of Oligocene rhyolitic volcanics. Gold mineralization occurs in fracture-controlled quartz veins, silicified stockwork, and brecciated shear zones as auriferous pyrite, arsenopyrite, and disseminated free gold. An estimated 60,000 tonnes averaging 2.5 g/t was produced from the Porphyry Dike, Venus, and Paupers Dream Mines on the property. Current drill indicated reserves (May, 19861 are placed at 6,946,000 tonnes averaging 1.45 g/t gold.

Despite the tremendous efforts and costs incurred by the industry and regulatory agencies to prevent premature roof failures in underground mines, roof falls continue to occur frequently due to the very unpredictable geological conditions and dynamic nature of mining operations. In fact, roof falls continue to be the largest contributor to coal mine fatalities. The failure of a mine roof generally occurs following a prolonged, gradual degradation in its physical conditions. An electronic mine roof monitoring system has been developed and tested in operating mining sections. It monitors mine roof degradation on a continuous basis. The field test results are presented and discussed.

The discussion of water and pit mining together is most appropriate. In fact, water can be considered a mineral and a well a narrow pit. Thus, of all the mineral resources mined, water is probably the cheapest, most valuable and least valued. The delivered price, including mining, transportation, storage and marketing rarely exceeds ten cents per ton, and our economy would cease without it. The time has come when the public must recognize that the extraction of a mineral resource from the land is a necessary and inevitable result of the industries? attempt to meet the demands of a growing economy. In so much of Florida, the lands mined can, with forethought and planning, be left as improved real estate, water conservation and management lands. On the other hand, the mining industries must face up to the need for the reclamation of land and compact with themselves, appropriate governmental agencies and with the mining states to restore mined lands to usefulness. Of limestone, sand, and clay 90 to 100 percent of the mined material is used, but with planning and specing, these pits, if they penetrate the water table, become valuable as real property. Phosphate, which returns about 70 percent of the mined materials to the pit, can reclaim the land for many purposes.

Planning and testing in advance of the mining operation are essential. This advance work can involve physical and chemical analysis of overburden cores, field test plots, green- house studies or any of a multitude of other baseline data collection activities. This paper presents the results of Central and South West's field test plots and how they relate to topsoil substitution. Besides the obvious need for testing in advance of mining, there are the inevitable regulatory requirements. Quoting from the office of Surface Mining Regulations concerning topsoil substitution: 216.22(e) TOPSOIL SUBSTITUTE AND SUPPLEMENTS -Selected overburden materials may be substituted for or used as a supplement to topsoil if the office determines that the resulting soil medium is equal to or more suitable for sustaining revegetation than is the available topsoil and the substitute material is the best available to support revegetation.

"Location. The Cuyuna iron district extends from the region of Kimberly, near the Center of Aitkin County, Minnesota, south-westward through Deerwood, Ironton, and Brainerd, across Crow Wing and Todd counties, across the Mississippi River, and for an unknown distance farther southwest in the same direction. It is known that the Huronian rocks, in which the ores of the Cuyuna district are found, reappear near the western border f Minnesota, but no ores have been found in this region. The district has a length of more than sixty miles, but the more important portion as now known 'is confined to Crow Wing County in an area which is less than thirty miles in its longest dimension. The commercial headquarters for the district are in the city f Brainerd, on the Mississippi River.History. The discovery of iron ore in the Cuyuna district was accomplished with no aid from surface outcrops, but solely through the use of the dip needle. The mantle of glacial drift overlying the iron formation varies from twenty-five to 359 feet in thickness, and it was by means f the magnetic attraction of the iron bearing rocks that their presence was discovered with the dip needle by Cuyler Adams, about 1895. The general geologic map of Minnesota, published by the State Geological Survey in 1909, showed the extension of the Huronian rocks of the Mesabi district passing through this area. Two years later, Leith published a sketch showing the hypothetic extension of the iron bearing formation through the same area. The first drilling was done in 1903, near Deerwood, Minn., by Cuyler Adams, and exploration was continued to the present time in increasing amount. The Northern Pacific Railway extends throughout the length of the district and affords an easy outlet for the ores. The Soo Line Railway completed a spur into the district in 1910. Both roads carry the ore to the docks at Supe¬rior, Wis., the average haul being about ninety miles. Shipments began in 1911, the Kennedy mine being the first producer. By 1918, the number of shippers reached twenty-seven, with a total output of nearly two and one-half million tons for that year."

The risk that water quality will be degraded by mining activity can be evaluated using risk analysis techniques. Water quality impacts can occur where water-rock interactions with tailings, waste rock, or leached ore lead to increased loading of constituents into surface or groundwater. Constituent loads contributed by mining facilities are determined by the migration route and chemical evolution of mine water. Mass load contributions from mines can be determined by estimating the prototype pore water in contact with mining waste, predicting the rate and timing of flow, assessing the degree of geochemical attenuation, and modeling chemical mixing with natural surface or groundwater. Mining facility siting and design measures can alter the chemical evolution of mine water by varying the quantity or quality of flow. Stochastic risk management techniques provide a powerful tool for quantitatively identifying the environmental consequences of various siting and design alternatives.

Researchers have long speculated regarding the adsorption state of collectors on mineral surfaces. Only recently have analytical techniques become available which allow direct in-situ analysis of adsorbed layers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IRJIRS) with reactive internal reflection elements allows for unobtrusive investigation of the adsorbed layer (Harrick, 1979). This technique has been used both for the in-situ identification of adsorbed species and for the direct calculation of collector adsorption density in real time from infrared spectral data (Miller and Kellar, 1988). The reactive mineral IRE serves both to internally reflect the infrared light and to act as a substrate at which collector adsorption can be monitored. Shown in Figure 1 is a schematic of light being internally reflected in an IRE. As the light is totally reflected at the interface, an evanescent wave propagates a short distance (typically a few microns) away from the IRE, and sampling of the interfacial region occurs. Because of multiple internal reflections, great sensitivity can be obtained. Flotation systems for which this method has been demonstrated include CaF2/oleate, Al2O3/ dodecyl sulfate, CaCO3/oleate, ZnS/xanthate, and KCl/octylamine (Miller and Kellar, 1988; Kellar et al., 1989, 1990; Miller et al., 1990).

In situ or pre-mining horizontal stresses are arguably the least well understood of the principal inputs into underground coal mining geotechnical engineering design, whether analytical, empirical, or numerical. This is a direct result of both the cost and difficulty of obtaining meaningful stress measurements, the various limitations of the measurement method in terms of sourcing strata types that approximate the assumed conditions of the post-measurement mathematics to convert measured strains into stresses, and a common practice by some geotechnical professionals to preferentially utilise generic values rather than interrogate the available measurement data for cause and effect relationships between horizontal stress magnitudes, directions and a range of associated controls. That numerical modelling simulations attempt to mimic reality but often rely on simplified generic horizontal stress input assumptions is a particular cause for further consideratio The paper attempts to further explore the nature of in situ horizontal stresses using a range of stress measurement results from the Australian coal sector supplemented by several international studies addressing the same basic issue, the result being a number of credible and highly relevant “cause and effect" inter-relationships between the three principal in situ stresses in addition to the influence of rock properties (e. Young's Modulus and Poisson's Ratio), cover depth and the larger-scale structural geological environment. In particular, the paper demonstrates that despite being commonly overlooked as a primary rock/coal material property, Poisson's Ratio and the associated K Effect are intrinsic to understanding 3D in situ stress measurement results and therefore, predicting in situ stress magni- tudes more generally for geotechnical analyses purposes. As a fundamental question, the paper addresses whether it is necessary and of engineering value to characterise in situ horizontal stresses: according to distinct "domains," in the same way that more easily identifiable geotechnical properties such as rock mass ratings, coal seam thickness, ply splits, and cover depth are often treated.

Studies have been carried out with the High Pressure Roller Mill, HPRM, to produce calcium carbonate minus 10 micron. This paper presents the optimization of the specific grinding force of the HPRM system for a maximum energy utilization when limestone is ground. In addition, experimental tests of producing carbonate minerals using the HPRM as a pre-crusher are described in this paper.

INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone. In the solvent extraction -electrowinning recovery of copper from oxide or sulfide ores there is a continuous transfer of iron and other impurities from the primary leach solution to the copper electrowinning electrolyte via chemical transfer or mechanical entrainment. Iron is the principal impurity that has to be controlled in the electrolyte by a "bleeding" of the electrowinning solution. This bleeding transfers copper and sulfuric acid back to the primary leach circuit along with the iron. Copper is recovered via the solvent extraction process and generally the sulfuric acid is used as a reagent in leaching. Unfortunately, cobalt, which is added to the electrowinning solution to modify the anodic process, is irreversibly lost through the bleeding operation. This cobalt loss represents a significant operating cost to SX-EW copper producers. DiphonixTM ion exchange resin contains diphosphonic acid and sulfonic acid functional groups on a polystyrene-divinyl benzene matrix. This resin has been found to strongly and selectively extract ferric ion from copper sulfate -sulfuric acid solutions containing cobalt. Thus, an ion exchange process using DiphonixTM resin for the control of iron has been developed to replace the conventional bleed stream process. The new process minimizes the loss of cobalt from the electrowinning circuit and strips the iron into a sulfate based solution suitable for leach solution makeup. In addition, this process can effect a lowering of the total iron concentration in the electrolyte circuit with an associated increase in current efficiency. In this paper, data on the loading and elution of iron are presented. Laboratory and pilot scale data will be discussed along with information on process design and comparative economics.

The success of Heavy Media Separation, the static sink-float process, is evidenced by the operation of an estimated 300 installations treating many millions of tons per year of a wide variety of mineral products ranging in value from gravel to diamonds. The static heavy media process is usually limited to the treatment of plus 1/4 inch material. Mr. Victor Rakowsky, who was largely instrumental in the development and application of heavy media separation, recognized the need for a new apparatus and process which would extend the application of heavy media into the finer size range without placing a restrictive limit on the top size of the feed. He recognized the requirement for the application of centrifugal force to augment the force of gravity in separating fines by sink-float techniques.

Many mines, in particular coal mines, use inclines or slopes as an access to seam or seamlike deposits which outcrop at or close to the surface. In general, from the surface or from a certain depth, inclines or slopes follow the dip of the deposit with length up to 30,000 feet and by that going under an overburden cover of several thousand feet. The common outbye transport system for mine products is the conveyor. Material and men to be transported down into the mine are handled by rope driven systems when the angle of inclination exceeds the employment of locomotive traction. The transport volume can be sizeable and reach 200 to 300 tons of material and 500 men to be handled daily in a medium size coal mine with a production of 10,000 tons ROM.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated the effectiveness of the safety elements used to prevent tunnel methane explosions. These fa1l under the general categories of better ventilation, better gas monitoring, reducing ignition sources, and improved worker training. For this evaluation, a technique called fault-tree analysis was used to analyze questionnaire responses from 27 tunneling experts. This analysis allowed us to rank the effectiveness of each safety element, and indicates where money is best spent to reduce the chance of a methane explosion. Results indicated that large decreases in the explosion hazard only take place with the simultaneous application of several elements. Most of these involve a human component - the everyday vigilance and awareness of those working underground.

In its role of providing technology to promote the efficient use of minerals and mineral process waste, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted research at: its Tuscaloosa Research Center to identify and develop high volume uses for phosphogypsum. Mixtures containing a maximum of 50 percent phosphogypsum, 6 to 10 percent lime, and the remainder fly ash had compressive strengths as high as 4,800 psi. The effects of the mounts of phosphogypsum, lime, and fly ash were investigated. Also, the effects of fly ash to lime ratios were studied.

When plotted as head vs. volume, fan curves start high and decrease in head with increasing volume while mine head curves start low and rise with increasing volume. Their intersection is the system operating point But wait a minute: Isn't head loss a negative number, a debit? And isn't fan head an energy addition, a credit? This, as every ventilation instructor knows, is often a stumbling block to student or audience comprehension. It is possible to use the intuitively correct curves -pressure losses as negative values and energy additions as positive values -and still obtain the correct operating point: adding the two curves produces a third curve that intersects the x-axis at the operating point, the point at \\tIich the fan energy input exactly matches air circulation energy loss. Using this technique also makes it easier to account for outside influences on the system, such as natural ventilating pressure; with the standard approach it is quite easy to add or subtract such influences to the wrong curve. This approach can be extended to the graphical solution of any series/parallel circuit or ventilation net\wrk. The results are the same, and the approach is logically consistent and less confusing.

Ground water has been a problem in underground mines (Anon., 1981; Aughenbough, 1973; Stansbury, 1981). Water migrates from water-bearing formations and surface water bodies such as lakes, ponds or creeks into the underground workings through fractures and cracks. As a result, under- ground workings become plagued with the necessity of having the water pumped out in large quantities. Underground workings become flooded when unexpected amounts of water flow into the openings, especially when mines use pillar extraction or longwall mining methods. It is difficult to detect water bodies above the coal mine roof before water problems take place. The resistivity method was used as a method for detecting water saturated rock layers and bodies of water above the roof of a coal mine in northern West Virginia, where the multiple seam mining method was being used.
