The United States Potash Company was the original discoverer and first producer of under-ground mined potash ore in North America and commenced active production of potash in 1931. In July 1956, the company merged with United States Borax & Chemical Corporation and is now a Division of that corporation. The mine is located twenty-two miles east of the city of Carlsbad and the refinery is located sixteen miles south of the mine, The mine was placed where the ore was found and the refinery placed where there was sufficient water for a dissolving and re-crystallization plant. For twenty-three of the last twenty-six years, the potash ore was mined with the room and pillar method, taking approximately sixty percent extraction and leaving forty percent in pillars. These pillars are generally fifty-eight feet by fifty-eight feet square. Three years ago, it was decided that removal of as large an extraction as possible from these pillars should be commenced.

In this paper, a model for the resin anchor bolt system is developed in which the smooth bar is modeled by using one-dimensional truss elements and the resin annulus is modeled by using axisymmetric elements. These two submodels are combined together and then incorporated into the' existing computer code ROOFBOLT. After this development, all of the components in the resin anchor bolt system including smooth bar, bearing plate and resin annulus can be correctly modeled.

The main potash deposit at Taquari-Vassouras is contained in cycle VII, and consists of several sylvinite bodies. Cycle VII belongs to a sequence of nine cycles defined by Szatmari (1974) in the Sergipe-Alagoas basin. The sylvinite layers are separated by halite beds. They are seated on or may be laterally in discordant contact with other lithologies such as the tachyhydrites at the base, and the limestone breccia at the top. The main structural features in the deposit include numerous synclines and anticlines, salt dissolution phenomena, and open fractures associated with the axes of the anticlines.

Several zinc showings, exhibiting many similarities to the well-known Balmat-Edwards zinc deposits of New York State, occur within the Grenville Supergroup strata of the Mont-Laurier Basin, Quebec. Metallogenic mapping programs have revealed much of the stratigraphic control of this mineralization. This control is observed on both regional and local scales. At the regional scale, these showings are confined to the perimeter of the Mt.-Laurier Basin, while at the local scale, a definite association between the zinc mineralization and dolomitic marble horizons is clearly exhibited from detailed mapping. These new exploration guidelines have proven to be useful for base-metal exploration in the Mt.-Laurier Basin and should be applicable to the entire Grenville Province.

In this work, the slurry flow in the ball mill is solved with Navier-Stokes' equations and the marker and cell technique (MAC), which tracks the fluid-free surface. Considering different planes in the radial and axial directions, this numerical approach leads to the direct calculation of the slurry velocity profile, mill holdup, and volumetric flow in the ball charge and pool. The MAC technique takes as input, the results of a direct three-dimensional simulation of the motion of grinding media, and in turn, provides a detailed knowledge of the hydrodynamics of slurry flow through the porous structure of ball load. This technique is a new approach to the mass transport problem that overcomes the limitations of indirect studies such as residence time analysis and holdup measurements.

The heavy media process is now being used extensively throughout the world for the gravity concentration of a great number of different minerals. The process is a commercial adaptation of the heavy liquid procedure which has been used in laboratories for many years to separate mineral of different specific gravities. In the heavy media process, a suspension of finely divided particles in water is used to increase the apparent specific weight of the fluid to the desired separating point. The original heavy media process used sand, galena, pyrite and occasionally other materials as the solid constituent of the separating suspensions. As the process developed, the need for a more universal media meeting the following requirements was recognized: 1. High specific gravity. 2. Resistance to abrasion. 3. Resistance to corrosion, 4. Readily reduced to a suitable size consist for suspension in water. 5. Available in quantity at economical price levels. 6. Easy to recover by a simple method.

In 1970 U. S. Steel acquired the physical assets of mine, mine property, and preparation plant of the Crystal Block Coal Company near Thacker, Mingo County, West Virginia. The facility, identified as U. S. Steel Mine No. 20, is administered and operated as a production unit of U. S. Steel Gary District, Gary, West Virginia. Mining operations of the No. 20 mine are conducted in the high-volatile Alma seam. The preparation plant, which originally had a capacity of about 150 tons per hour (tph) of raw-coal feed, had process circuitry consisting of a Daniels heavy-media vessel for cleaning the plus-1/4-inch raw coal, a McNally-Pittsburg feldspar jig for cleaning the 1/4 inch by 28 mesh, and Daniels flotation cells for treating the 28 mesh by 0. No water-classification system existed. Refuse tailings from the plant were pumped to several surface lagoons which were decanted to the stream. The settled solids were removed and trucked to the coarse-refuse disposal area. Water make-up requirements were supplied by a small mine-water surface reservoir and augmented with stream water. There are several simulators available and are being used for analysis, improvement and optimal control of the grinding process. However, these tend to be developed on informal software engineering methodologies. The informal approach is not suitable for long term development and a formal design methodology is necessary to develop efficient, error-free, and easy-to-use and to maintain software. In meeting this goal, basic concepts of a software model for describing the mineral process objects has been proposed. The software model forms the basis for software design and efficient implementation of the simulation. This paper describes the development of software models for grinding circuits. The work constitutes the theoretical foundation for the development of an advanced simulator for comminution.

A ground-support system for grizzly and haulage drifts was tested in Magma Copper Co.'s San Manuel mine. Eight two-piece, wide- flange steel sets were erected in a ventilation drift on the 2315 grizzly level. The sets were lagged with three different materials and back- packed with pea gravel and sand. The pillar on either side of the drift support system was instrumented with stressmeters and rock-bolt load cells, the backfill with pressure cells, and the steel sets with load cells. Results indicate a better survival rate than with typical monolithic concrete.

This study examines the accuracy of area sampling for measuring the dust exposure of mining machine operators in coal mines. The specific objective of this research was to find locations where an area sampler might work better than earlier studies have indicated. The results show that fixed-location area sampling cannot accurately predict the dust exposure of a machine operator, even when the best fixed location is sought, the fixed location is quite close to the operator and the bias due to the dust concentration gradient is corrected. Industrial hygienists have known for many years that area sampling is unsuitable for measuring air contaminant exposures in the workplace. Near contaminant sources, the dilution air and the contaminants are not evenly mixed. Therefore, when workers are near contaminant sources, exposure measurements must be taken from the worker's breathing zone to be accurate.

The results of an experimental study of polymer-induced flocculation of clay suspensions in continuous, stirred-tank reactors are presented. The effects of polymer dosage, mixing time and mixing intensity are shown to be generally similar to those observed for equivalent batch systems, but flocculation appears to be generally less effective in the continuous process. Settling rates are lower and supernatant turbidities are higher for the continuous system. It is postulated that non-equilibrium effects due to simultaneous polymer adsorption and floc growth can be exploited so as to enhance flocculation in batch systems. The nature of the continuous process, however, offers less opportunity for taking advantage of such effects. Conditions in a continuous flocculation system inherently lead to a closer approach to equilibrium.

A single stage ball mill-cyclone circuit was extensively tested for its reactions to step changes in three controllable variables: feed rate, water to cyclones, and water to the ball mill. A series of carefully designed tests are to be carried out in order to determine relationships between the various ball mill and cyclone parameters. Cyclone overflow particle size distribution is to be continuously monitored during the tests using an ultrasonic device. Other circuit variables that are to be measured and recorded are feed rate, ball mill mass flow, cyclone feed and overflow densities, cyclone feed sump level, water flows, etc. Once the circuit performance is defined, two types of grinding circuit control systems will be evaluated: (a) mass flow-based; (b) particle size- based. Results obtained by each approach in terms of feed rate and cyclone overflow size distributions are discussed. The high sensitivity of continuous particle size measurements to grinding circuit disturbances is emphasized.

In the municipality of Rio Quito, department of Chocó, Colombia, alluvial gold has been illegally exploited by suction dredging. The project consists of using geospatial techniques to identify degraded areas and analyze the viability of remediation dredging to mitigate environmental liabilities. The area has sediments contaminated by mercury and cyanide, so it is necessary to reconform the riverbed with the remediated material. Southern Arizona has one of the world's principal concentrations of copper ore bodies. Twenty miles south of Tucson, close to the Mexican border at Sahuarita in Pima County, is the Twin Buttes mine. In mid-1973, the Anaconda Company and American Metals Climax Incorporated (AMAX) established a 50-50 partnership to operate and expand the Twin Buttes property. Anamax Mining Company was established as the operating company for this joint venture. The production from the Twin Buttes mine is shared between the two partners who market independently. A major expansion of the Twin Buttes operation has included an accelerated stripping programrne for the pit, an expansion of the sulphide concentrator, the construction of an oxide leach plant and a 57 MW diesel generating power station. Part of this major expansion, the large tonnage oxide processing plant was brought on stream in 1975 and is now close to design capacity. The "mine to market gap" has been closed by producing high-purity copper cathodes at the mine site from oxide ore reserves. By using a hydrometallurgical process route, copper production is possible with negligible effects on the environment.

Approximately sixty, small, surface coal mines in Pennsylvania participated in a program designed to improve safety performance in the workplace. The method involved the use of safety sampling and observation to assess the safe standards of worker behavior and work conditions. Data were collected through the use of operation-specific, on-site safety records covering seven major occupational units. Workplace events observed (acts and conditions) were assigned a hazard classification; feedback, both immediate and delayed was initiated to improve safety performance. The experiences drawn from this pilot project have proven the need to continue to pursue this behavioral approach; however, a stricter methodology needs to be adopted in the collection and analysis of data.

Silver is an economically important component of many complex, massive sulfide ores. Current beneficiation for these ores is almost entirely by flotation. Silver recovery often is low, but little is known about the flotation behavior of the silver-bearing minerals. Floatability studies were conducted using silver-bearing tetrahedrite and lead-zinc ore. The effects of xanthate collector concentration, conditioning time, potentiostatic control of the mineral potential, and pH on mineral floatability were evaluated. The floatability of the silver-bearing minerals was shown to depend on collector concentration and mineral potential. The effect of controlling mineral potential during the flotation process is discussed.

In metallurgical applications, coal fulfills dual roles as a chemical feed stock and as a fuel source. These applications range from cokemaking, ironrnaking (including pulverized coal injection), foundry, basic oxygen furnace / electric arc furnace coal additions, direct ironrnaking, Corex, and the futuristic direct steelmaking. In all steelmaking related processes, chemical reactions are simultaneously temperature and chemical dependent. Therefore, coals used in these processes must consistently comply with specific quality parameters in order to promote efficient operations. This paper limits discussion of Metallurgical Coal Quality to cokemaking and ironmaking applications. Its purpose is to present the customer's perspective on the control of critical coal and coke properties.

The mineral zircon is mined for use as specialty foundry sands, abrasives, ores of ZrO2 and zirconium metal, refractories, and zirconium chemicals. It is produced as one of several products from heavy-mineral sand deposits associated with fossil shorelines. Because of its low coefficient of thermal expansion, its high melting point, its high refractive index, and its chemical inertness, it is an attractive refractory material. Zircon varies from deposit to deposit in terms of grain size, grain shape, and chemical impurity. Thus, there is a wide range of commercial products differing in impurity levels, particle shapes, and grain sizes.

Man's activity in developing, operating, and abandoning a mine often affects the quality of the ground water and surface water. Acid water drainage from mines is an example of an impact from mining that results in degradation of ground and surface water. New flow systems are created by the mining activity. The mining made possible complex chemical reactions that, with water movement, create a discharge of low pH, poor quality water. Remedies for these problems fall into two general solutions: 1) treatment of the end product and 2) reversal of some aspect of man's disturbance of the natural system. The relative reversibility of various aspects of man's impact from mining activities ranges from relatively easy to very difficult, from economically feasible to economically infeasible, and from technically possible to essentially impossible with present knowledge. The relative reversibility of a mine-related problem cannot be assessed without first understanding the detailed physical interactions that combine to form the problem. Acid water drainage is a combination of the availability of several chemical factors with the availability of water for a transport mechanism.

Large - scale tests at the Polish Safety in Mines Institute /established in 1925 as "Barbara" Experimental mine/ performed in underground and surface experimental galleries, simulating conditions in roadways in mines, are the basic source of knowledge about development and propagation of explosions. Investigations up to 1973 were performed under the Institute's former research director Professor W.B. Cybulski s supervision, whose handbook concerning combating of coal dust explosions in collieries has been also published in the U.S. (2), and are continued until now. For investigating explosions the "Barbara" Mine disposes of 170 m /7.5 sq m/, 200 m /5 sq m/ and 400 m /7.5 sq m/ underground gallieries as well as of 10 m, 25 m, 44 m and 100 m surface galleries. For example, in the 200 m gallery more than 5200, and in the 400 m gallery - more than 2200 test explosions have been performed. Basing on determination of explosion hazard in roadways in collieries and on data of scientific research performed at the Safety in Mines Institute, the strategy of combating the explosion hazard in mines was elaborated; it includes mainly diminishing of coal duet. deposition in roadways, and -because of the possible inefficiency of this safety means in some roadways in mechanized collieries -- the introduction of three additional defence lines against coal dust explosions. It should be mentioned that at the "Barbara" Mine the problem of coal dust explosion initiation was elaborated as contract work for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The main aim of this paper is to discuss some aspects of methods and measures for combating coal dust explosion hazard in highly mechanized mines in the Polish mining industry where in some roadways explosible coal dust is present, but it is not the aim to evaluate the effectiveness of methods and measures for diminishing the make-up of coal dust and coal dust deposition rates in roadways.
