"A complementary ion exchange/solvent extraction process for the recovery of copper from low-grade ores developed by Iontech Engineering Ltd. is described. It has successfully been implemented on a full-scale plant level at the Buchim Copper Mine in Macedonia, yielding a maximum copper cathode production of 2400 tonnes per year. Technical and economic aspects of three years of operational experience are comprehensively compared with the Asarel Medet copper plant in Bulgaria, which is utilizing conventional solvent extraction in the enrichment/purification step. INTRODUCTION The concentration and separation of copper from primary leachates is one of the key operations in the hydrometallurgical processing of oxide ores (Langner, 2011). Conventionally, this basic operation is conducted by submitting the pregnant leach solution (PLS), with a 1–5 g/L Cu content, from the initial sulfuric acid leach to a solvent-extraction (SX) process in which copper reports to the organic phase (see Figure 1). After phase separation, the metal is stripped from the extractant/diluent mixture employing sulfuric acid to furnish a concentrated metal solution, usually containing 40–50 g Cu/L. The final products of the overall process are copper cathodes, which are obtained from a terminal electrowinning step.Although considered as “technology of choice”, SX to date is still suffering from several drawbacks, such as the risk of poor phase disengagement and the high capital costs of solvent-extraction plants. Especially, the processing of leachates with lower copper tenors (< 1 g/L) is often economically less attractive. As a result, tremendous efforts have been dedicated to the evaluation of alternative technologies to address these challenges."

Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The stability of a ferrosilicon dense medium suspension is one of the most important parameters to keep under control since it determines the density gradient of the medium in the separation zone and thus directly influences separation sharpness. The stability of ferrosilicon suspensions were characterized using settling tests employing a differential pressure method. Particles smaller than 45 µm and especially the ore fines played an important role in the settling behaviour of the solids. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, steel, hearth, blast furnace The Mittal Steel Company operates about 36 blast furnaces on four continents. Furnaces range from 1100 m3 to 4800 m3 inner volume. The focus of the group is to push for increasing productivity and increasing campaign life. This has been especially challenging, as many of these furnaces were not equipped for long campaigns during their prior rebuilds. Monitoring and operating practices have to be modified to match the new philosophy. Mid-campaign hearth repair strategies and hearth design philosophies have had to be reconsidered. The paper describes experiences with the current hearth designs and measures taken for hearth life extension. Additionally, the philosophy of recent hearth re-designs is discussed.

Over the past decade there has been a great deal of research into the use of virtual reality (VR) and computer graphics in the mining industry. Much of this has led to developed applications including training simulators and accident reconstruction. One other area where there is considerable potential for virtual reality is that of mining ergonomics. This paper identifies those common ergonomic limitations associated with mining equipment that can be effectively modelled using VR techniques. From this, two simple models have been developed, namely (i) remote control continuous miner operation and (ii) free steered vehicle sight-lines, which demonstrate the practical use of VR in this area.

"The artisanal mining sector in Central Africa is largely informal, yet provides an essential livelihood for many (directly or indirectly) participants, as well as facilitating an important source for the flow of income into many communities. Artisanal mining varies from site to site, but appear largely well structured despite its informality. The artisanal mining sites in Central Africa have some inherent management structure and the extraction itself is often organised. Artisanal mining is labour intensive and is generally conducted utilising hand digging methods e.g. shovels or hand chisels. Artisanal mining is generally more dangerous than small-scale or large-scale modern mining operations. This is especially true as artisanal operations are generally subsistence activities with artisanal miners focusing more on immediate concerns than the long-term consequences of their activities. When miners have no other source of income, they will usually find ways to evade controls and carry on working. The objective, through proper/dedicated training of artisanal miners is to migrate Artisanal mining to establish a small-scale mining (SSM) industry in Central Africa. Through developing the necessary skills in the fundamental areas of mining it is proposed that Artisanal Mining can become more productive and safer mining operations. The paper reviews the above focus areas, highlighting the skills and tools that are necessary to assist in establishing a sustainable small scale mining industry migrating from manual labour to semi-mechanised mining and processing. The purpose of the transformation process is to create a safe, healthy, environmental and community oriented mining operation with the objective to uplift the skills and wealth of the mineworkers and the general community."

Over the last few years Lonmin Platinum and Sandvik have embarked on a unique partnership of collaboration through a systematic approach to developing equipment to mechanize and automate narrow reef platinum mining. After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key a spec of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. This paper describes the trials and development that have resulted in the mining method described as Lonmin mechanized breast.

With over 30 years experience in the process improvement industry, Clyde Materials Handling has helped their global customer base transform the way in which they operate their processes, which has enabled them to generate sustainable economic benefit and maintain their positions as leaders in their respective markets. Operators within the metals market have developed and deployed pneumatic conveying and pneumatic injection technologies. These environmentally supportive and sustain-able solutions have been used to transport raw materials within operating facilities, from storage to silo, as well as injecting these materials directly into the heart of production processes. Operators, such as Codelco in Chile, Corus Steel in the UK, and many others across the World have seen pneumatic injection solutions transform their process and costs. The thermal properties of manganese raw materials such as ores, sinters, and briquettes, are among the many factors that determine the amount of energy needed for processing. Thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, conductivity, and apparent specific heat capacity of solid samples and compacted powder samples of manganese ores were examined from room temperature to 1000 °C. The effect of porosity (of the materials used) on the thermal properties was also investigated. The laser flash method and a pushrod dilatometer were used.

The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

To recover the coal resources of high-sulphur anthracite in Jincheng Mining Area, underground coal gasification (UCG) of No. 15 seam in Fenghuangshan Coal Mine was proposed. The feasibility of the project was confirmed by investigations of occurrence conditions, coal properties, and roof conditions, as well as experimental studies and theoretical analysis. It was found that UCG technology is appropriate to be adopted in the mining of the No. 15 seam, due to the stable rock conditions, simple geological structure and hydrogeology, the high carbon content of the coal, non-cohesiveness, medium-thermal stability, high ash fusion temperature, and weak reactivity with CO2. Further factors are the characteristics of the immediate roof, which consists of 9.11 m of limestone and mudstone with a compact structure and low permeability, and 4.27 m of dominantly mudstone with low permeability.

Ferroalloy furnaces are well known to be extremely difficult to control from a metallurgical perspective. Mostly metallurgical control is still reactive in nature, causing a significant amount of reworking and product blending to achieve a proper product specification. Despite numerous efforts towards the model based control of primary smelting operations, actual metallurgical feed forward control seems to remain elusive. One of the key reasons in the failure to model these metallurgical reactors well, is that fundamentally orientated pyrometallurgists, statisticians, data miners and control engineers very often have diverging ideas how to model these systems. Furthermore, metallurgists have often come to rely on their ability to develop empirical regression models of furnace behaviour, as they have lost their faith in the ability of thermochemical and metallurgical engineering fundamentals to accurately predict the outcomes from furnaces. This paper shows how good thermochemical modelling can be combined with proper technological and systems analysis, as well as a proper inventory model, to predict the alloy and slag chemistry with good accuracy one tap into the future, at a time horizon of typically around 4 to 6 hours. For this modelling approach, a number of tools will be used, such as data reconciliation, thermodynamic modelling using Fact Sage®, inventory and heel estimation, neural networks and statistical data exploration. Furthermore, systems identification theory will be combined with the approaches given above to develop a truly dynamic predictive model. This paper seeks to demonstrate the need for a hybrid approach, which incorporates plant data and readily accessible thermodynamic data to develop a proper dynamic model.

Kriel Colliery has experienced some sub-standard blast results on the overburden. Blast results are considered poor when the fragmentation is too big, back break into the new highwall, capping is experienced and/or excess overburden material is thrown into the void. Poor blasting leads to lower productivity, equipment breakdowns, and poor drilling and blasting results on the adjacent blast, contamination of coal or loss of coal. A simulation was developed in Microsoft Excel to model blasting results while changing various parameters. From the simulation results, it could be seen that a change of blast design could be beneficial. As an example, smaller drilling patterns were simulated (10 m x10 m to 8 m x8 m, and 8 m x8 m to 7 m x7 m in Pit 5 and Pit 6 respectively) in combination with changes in explosives (P700 emulsion vs. ANFO) and drill bit diameter (311 mm vs. 251 mm). The results show that each of the options has a specific scenario that will be most beneficial to the mine. These results are quite specific and subject to variable inputs. The purpose of the example is to demonstrate how the simulation can be used as a tool to asses blast design variations.

The safe operation of gas transmission pipelines is increasingly coming under the spotlight. Increasing environmental pressure is also forcing pipeline owners and operators to ensure the integrity of their pipelines. The integrity of a pipeline is usually determined using intelligent pigging, often referred to as In Line Inspection (ILI). However, in many cases, gas pipelines cannot be pigged for a variety of reasons. The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) has recently published Recommended Practice (RP) 0502, referred to as the External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) Methodology to assist pipeline owners with assessing the condition of pipelines that cannot be pigged. 2. External Corrosion Direct Assessment - NACE RP 0502 The ECDA Methodology is conducted in four phases as follows: ? Pre-Assessment ? Indirect Inspection ? Direct Examination ? Post-Assessment In the Pre-Assessment Phase, all the relevant historical and current data relating to the pipeline in question is reviewed. This covers pipeline, construction, soils/environmental, corrosion control and operational data. The aim of the Pre-Assessment Phase is to determine whether ECDA is feasible, and if so, to define the ECDA Regions and finally to select the Indirect Inspection Tools that will be used for each region. ABSTRACT We report the results of a model-testing program to evaluate the strength characteristics of non-persistent joints. We describe the conditions under which new tensile cracks generate and propagate to connect existing joints so that the rock mass becomes fractured into several blocks, leading to a low strength. The strength of some models was equal to that along a single joint through the full sample length. In models with two joint sets, failure took place along a composite plane, partly sliding along a discontinuous joint and shearing through the intervening intact block of rock, or else by rotation and sliding of the blocks. This last failure mode could also lead to very low model strength. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Dieser Bericht beschreibt die Ergebnisse von Versuchen mit Modellfelsmassen um den Einfluâ von unterbrochenen Rissen in ihrer Widerstandsfähigkeit zu untersuchen. Es werden die Umstände beschrieben unter denen neue Zugrisse entstehen, sich verbreiten, sich mit bestehenden Rissen verbinden und die Felsmasse in mehrere Felsblöcke zerlegen und zu einer kleinen Widerstandsfestigkeit führen. Der Widerstand einiger Versuchskörper entsprach der Festigkeit eines Risses der die ganze Länge des Versuchskörpers überquert.Versuchkörper mit zwei Rißfamilien versagten unter einer zusammegesetzten Ebene, zum Teil mit Verschiebungen nach unterbrochenen Rißebenen die sich durch Schnittversagen intakter Felsblöcke verbinden, und zum Teil durch Drehungen und Verschiebungen einzelner Felsblöcke. Die letzte Versagunsart kann zu einer stark verminderten Widerstansfähigkeit führen. RÉSUMÉ Nous présentons les résultats de quelques essais fait sur des modèles évaluant les caractéristiques de résistance des fractures discontinues. Nous décrivons les conditions sous lesquelles des nouvelles fissures de traction peuvent s’engendrer et se propager pour faire la connection avec des fractures existantes, de façon que le rocher se fracture en plusieurs blocs, menant à une résistance réduite. La résistance de quelques modèles fut égale a celle d’une fracture traversant toute la longueur du modèle. Pour les modèles ayant deux ensembles de fractures, la rupture a eu lieu sur une surface mixte, causée d’une part, par le glissement sur une fracture discontinue et d’autre part, par la rupture à travers le pont de matériel intact; ou bien par rotation et glissement des blocs. Cette dernière façon de rupture peut aussi aboutir à une très faible résistance des modèles.

Mineral floatability is strongly connected with mineral structure and composition. The complexity of mineral surfaces has meant that few attempts have been made to understand the effect of impurities (trace elements) on the flotation process. Zeta potential technique has been extensively used to evaluate the surface charge of mineral particles. Nevertheless, those measurements consider only an average of mineral particles surface charge. The presence of fine particles and inclusions covering a mineral may influence the local reagent adsorption process, which will ultimately be reflected in the subsequent global response of the mineral froth flotation efficiency. The current work assesses the iron oxide mineral, haematite (Fe2O3). Zeta potential and streaming potential techniques were used to determine the surface charge of fine and coarser particles of haematite. Further analysis was performed to determine the point of zero charge (PZC) of the mineral. In addition, adsorption isotherms of alkyl ammonium chloride reagents with different lengths of carbon chains were carried out. It was found haematite floatability depends strongly on the isoelectric point (IEP) value, which is affected by other mineral species present at the mineral surface. Haematite floatability became significant only at relatively high tetradecyl ammonium chloride collector concentrations (concentration greater than 4 10-4M), which does not happen with other oxides such as quartz. Unlike quartz, haematite develops a low surface charge over a wide range of pH, disabling all long-range attractive interactions between the mineral and the collector. Therefore, hydrophobic chain interaction is probably the most likely mechanism acting to promote collector adsorption and enhance further floatability. Diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was used to suggest a possible mechanism to understand the sequence of collector adsorption and the effect of trace species on it. A series of measurements of induced stress by the Compact Conical-ended Borehole Overcoring (CCBO) technique was performed within rock mass around a tunnel excavated in a region that an underground powerhouse is constructed under high initial rock stress. In the measurements, a phenomenon of core disking was observed during overcoring. The selecting method of strain data uninfluenced by the core disking was proposed, using X-ray CT scanner. Then, the state of induced stress determined from the selected strain data was discussed, comparing with the state of initial stress. Eine Serie von Messungen von induzierter Belastung mit kompaktem konisch-beendetem Überbohrverfahren (CCBO) wurde in Felsmassen um einen Tunnel ausgeführt, der in einer Region gebohrt wurde wo ein unterirdisches Kraftwert unter hoher anfänglicher Felsbelastung gebaut wird. Bei den Messungen wurde beim Überbohrverfahren ein Phänomen des Core Disking beobachtet. Die gewählte Methode der Belastungsdaten, unbeeinflusst durch Core Disking wurde vorgeschlagen, unter Verwendung von Röntgen-CT-Scanner. Dann wurde der Zustand der induzierten Belastung aus den gewählten Belastungsdaten diskutiert, unter Vergleich mit der ursprünglichen Belastung. Une série de mesures de contrainte induite effectuée avec la technique de forage de sur-carottage compacte à embout conique a été exécutée dans la masse rocheuse autour d&apos;un tunnel excavé dans une région de construction d&apos;une centrale électrique souterraine sous haute contrainte de roche initiale. Au cours des mesures, un phénomène de discage de carotte a été observé pendant le sur-carottage. La méthode de sélection des données de contrainte non influencée par le discage de carotte a été proposée, en utilisant un scanneur de tomographie calculée aux rayons X. Il s&apos;ensuit que l&apos;état de contrainte induite provoquée et déterminé à partir des données de la contrainte sélectionnées a été traitée, en effectuant une comparaison avec l&apos;état de contrainte initiale.

Mining engineers frequently encounter complex design problems for which the critical components of the design are difficult to quantify or compare. Teams of people typically work on these designs and human perceptions and judgments play a strong role. To assist with this process, the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) as a decisionmaking tool is described in this paper. Although the technique is used in many other disciplines, it is currently not widely used in mining engineering in South Africa. To use the AHP process, the problem should be treated as a hierarchy that defines the goal, the alternatives to reach it, and the criteria for evaluation of these alternatives. Pair wise comparisons are conducted on the criteria of the hierarchy to establish priorities. The value of the technique is that it is simple to test for consistency amongst the pair wise comparisons to ensure that the answer obtained is better than that provided by a random selection. To illustrate the technique, the use of a backfill support system in a platinum mining project was investigated. Ten design parameters, which will be impacted by the use of backfill, were identified and weighted according to their relative importance. The result of the AHP evaluation was that the use of a backfill support system should be preferred to a conventional support system at the mine.

By the end of 2011, the total installed capacity of the ISASMELT? technology will exceed 9 000 000 metric tons per year of feed materials in copper and lead smelters around the world. Commercial plants, operating in Belgium and Germany, are also batch converting copper materials in ISASMELT? furnaces. This TSL technology is equally effective for continuous converting processes, whereupon it is called ISACONVERT?. This paper presents the recently patented ISACONVERT? process for the continuous converting of nickel and Platinum Group Metal (PGM) containing mattes using the calcium ferrite slag system. The paper focuses on the potential application of the ISACONVERT? technology to existing nickel and PGM smelting complexes.

Vibration levels on a variety of equipment in a South African opencast mine were measured in this study. The well-established ISO 2631-1 (1997) standard methodology was used for the computation of weighted root mean square (WRMS) and vibration dose value (VDV). This method was used to evaluate the whole-body vibration (WBV) on a wide range of equipment in the opencast mine using the two main parameters, namely the daily exposure A(8) which is based on the WRMS concept and the VDV which measures shocks. The results obtained show that while the majority of the equipment rendered exposure levels that are below the exposure limit value (ELV), exposure levels on about half of the equipment do exceed the exposure action levels. The study also highlights the importance of shock in the observed responses.
