The carbon cathode for aluminium electrolysis is also part of the container of the process. In order to understand the behaviour and possible failure of the cathode, detailed material properties under operating conditions are needed. The paper reports experimental studies of bath and sodium in filtration, graphitization with time, loss of strength due to sodium, sodium expansion as function of pressure, as well as creep due to the developed stresses. As an example, sodium and thermal expansion data are used to calculate strain-stress models of realistic cell designs, and possible design weakness can be pointed out. A brief review of Computational Thermodynamics software concerning the modeling and prediction of reactions involving metals, slags and fluxes is presented. Their application for various steelmaking treatments is discussed. Examples concern phosphorus removal in BOF and EAF, ladle steel desulfurization, and specific treatments for inclusions control in semi-killed or Al-killed carbon and stainless steels.

"SynopsisThe separation of zirconium and hafnium is essential in the nuclear industry, since zirconium alloys for this application require hafnium concentrations of less than 100 ppm. The separation is, however, very difficult due to the numerous similarities in the chemical and physical properties of these two elements.Traditional methods for separation of zirconium and hafnium rely predominantly on wet chemical techniques, e.g. solvent extraction. In contrast to the traditional aqueous chloride systems, the AMI zirconium metal process developed by Necsa focuses on dry fluoride-based processes. Dry processes have the advantage of producing much less hazardous chemical waste.In the proposed AMI process, separation is effected by selective sublimation of the two tetrafluorides in an inert atmosphere under controlled conditions, and subsequent selective desublimation. Estimates are made for the sublimation rates of the two tetrafluorides based on the equilibrium vapour pressures. A sublimation model, based on the sublimation rates, was developed to determine if the concept of separation by sublimation and subsequent desublimation is theoretically possible.IntroductionZirconium requires several purification steps to conform to nuclear-grade specifications. Little information is available on the sublimation separation of Zr and Hf compounds, especially in the fluoride form, the majority of which deals with sublimation under vacuum conditions. On the industrial scale, only vacuum sublimation of ZrF4 has been reported. No records were found for the sublimation of ZrF4 in an inert atmosphere. Information on the sublimation rate of ZrF4 or HfF4 in an inert atmosphere is also limited. The rate is assumed to be dependent on several factors, of which temperature, area, and composition are considered the most important."

The viscosities of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-FeO slags were measured under conditions ofCaO/SiO2=1.15–1.6, 10–13 percent Al2O3, 5–10 percent MgO and 5–20 percent FeO. Slag viscosity decreased with increasing FeO content at a fixed basicity (CaO/SiO2) of slag. Slag viscosity at low FeO (<7.5 percent FeO) exhibited a minimum value by increasing MgO content in slag. Viscosity decreased with increasing slag basicity up to 1.3 while it increased as slag basicity increased from 1.3 to 1.5. Thus, it was proposed that the driving force for the decreases of slag viscosity would be an increase in depolymerization of silicate network at C/S=1.3, while the viscous behaviour at C/S>1.3 would be increased with increasing the chemical potential of primary solid phase e.g. dicalcium silicate. A thermodynamic approach for the activity of primary solid phase in molten slags resulted in a reasonable relationship between viscosity and slag components. Therefore, it was confirmed that slag viscosity in basic slags system (C/S>1.3) could be determined by the chemical potential of dicalcium silicate. Refractory/metal interactions and associated reactions are significant during casting as they can lead to inclusion formation. High-temperature interactions between aluminosilicate refractories and molten steel were studied in the present investigation using the sessile drop method. The changes in the contact angles between molten iron with well-defined oxygen levels and substrates of silica, mullite (3Al2O3?2SiO2) as well as commercial refractories were measured in the dynamic mode. In all cases, the reaction led to slag formation. The experiments were performed under isothermal conditions at 1823 and 1873 K. A known and constant oxygen partial pressure was imposed above the iron drop, through appropriate CO-CO2-Ar mixtures. For all substrates, the contact angles started decreasing due to the lowering of the surface tension of iron, as oxygen was imposed on to the system. When a critical level of oxygen was reached, slag started forming at the drop/substrate interface and at this stage, the contact angle dropped suddenly. Subsequent behaviour of silica and mullite was observed to be different, with SiO2showing a non-wetting behaviour. In the case of SiO2substrate, there were also deep erosions along the periphery of the drops and there was slag accumulation at the sides of the metal drop, probably due to Marangoni flow and/or SiO(g) formation. SEM and EDS analysis of the substrates revealed that the formed slag was fayalite. The thermodynamic criteria for slag formation and possible mechanisms of the reaction are discussed in the light of the experiments. An underground wet shotcrete trial was completed last year to determine the effectiveness of wet shotcrete as an alternative support mechanism to dry shotcrete in the kimberlite environment. The wet shotcrete was manufactured at the underground batch plants, transported to site using an agiecar and transferred to the shotcrete pump. The wet shotcrete is pumped to the nozzle where compressed air at 7 bar and an accelerator, Meyco SA 160, is added and enables the shotcrete to be placed successfully onto the tunnel wall. No tunnel guard was previously placed on the sidewall and hangingwall. Geotechnical testing indicates that the Grace fibre performed extremely well with the energy absorption tests at 7 kg/m3and 8kg/m3where both achieved over the mine requirement of 750joules. The Grace fibre and wet shotcrete mix also achieved a compressive strength in excess of 55 MPa, well above the 45 MPa requirement for Premier Mine. In South Africa there are two suitable wet shotcrete machines available for the mining industry, the Spreymec, manufactured by Tamrock and the Fermel/Meyco wet shotcrete machine. The Spreymec is a fully imported machine. The Fermel component is manufactured in South Africa and the Meyco shotcrete components are imported and supported by MBT (Master Builder Technologists) in South Africa. The Fermel/Meyco machine is assembled in South Africa. Premier Mine has allocated some R2, 100,000 towards the implementation of the wet shotcrete system. If implementation is successful there should be an internal rate of return gain of 76% with regard to this project.

Abstract: The paper describes the engineering-geological conditions and the structural decisions of the underground machine hall of Rogun HPP under construction in Tadjikistan on Vaksh river as well as the results of physical model studies and long-term in-situ investigations of the variation of the stress-strain state of the surrounding rock mass and the supports of openings, and the assessment of the stability of openings during and after the construction. The analysis of the results of long-term in-situ observations and previous model studies permitted to make the assessment of the present-day state of the machine hall and give recommendations of its further use. Zusammenfassung: Im Vortrag werden die ingenieurgeologischen Bedingungen und konstruktiven Lösungen für die unterirdischen Maschinenhalle des in der Republik Tadshikistan am Fluss Wachsch im Bau stehenden Rogunskaja-Wasserkraftwerkes, die Ergebnisse von experimentellen Forschungen (in physikalischen Modellen) und Naturbeobachtungen der Spannungs-Verformungszustandsänderungen des umliegenden Felsmassivs und Ausbaues von Untertagebauten, sowie Ergebnisse der Bewertung der Standfestigkeit von Untertagebauten während des Bauvorganges und nach der Bauperiode beschrieben. Auf Grund der Analyse von Ergebnissen der dauernden Naturbeobachtungen und früher durchgeführten geomechanischen Modellversuche wird der heutige Zustand der Maschinenhalle des Wasserkraftwerkes bestimmt und werden die Empfehlungen für ihren weiteren Benutzung angeführt. Annotation: L’exposé décrit les conditions d’ingénieur et celles géologiques, et les solutions constructives de la salle des machines de la Centrale hydroélectrique (CHE) Rogounskaya sur le fleuve Vakhch, les résultats d’études expérimentales (sur des modèles physiques) et d’observations extérieures sur place concernant des changements de l’état de tension-déformation d’un massif environnant et du cuvelage des excavations, ainsi que les résultats d’évaluation de la stabilité de l’excavation au cours de la construction et à la période post-construction. A la base de l’analyse des résultats des observations de longue durée et des études préalables géomécaniques sur des modèles, l’évaluation de l’état actuel de la salle des machines de la CHE est effectueé, et les recommandations sur son utilisation ultérieure sont présentées.

Outsourcing of specialist and non-continuous services is common practice in international mining operations. There is an increasing trend towards this practice in South Africa as a result of the major organisational changes that have taken place in the industry, and as lower revenues and production cost pressures have reduced profit margins. Many specialist functions have been outsourced in the industry for a long time, an example being shaft sinking, which is undertaken by specialist shaft sinking contractors. In the professional services area, some activities have been outsourced, for example the design and construction supervision of tailings dams, but mining related activities such as geology, mine planning and scheduling, engineering, ventilation, and rock engineering, have traditionally been carried out by in-house staff. In this paper some of the industry problems which have led to an increase in outsourcing of professional services are considered. Then the pros and cons of outsourcing are dealt with before outlining the factors which should be taken into account in choosing an outsourcing partner.

The practice of pumping gases which inhibit combustion for purposes of controlling or extinguishing mine fires is now universally accepted. The practice has been used many times in coal mines in India and the experiences are reviewed. The procedures relating to a membrane based nitrogen generator and to a combustion gases generator are described. The physical properties, practical requirements and economic implications of using different gases is briefly reviewed. Some aspects of the practice as related to mine fires in certain collieries in other countries are dealt with.

One of the main problems related to mining investment decisions is the use of accurate prediction models. Metallurgical recovery is a major source of variability, and in this regard, the Chuquicamata processing plant recovery was modelled as a function of geomining-metallurgical data and ore characteristics obtained from a historical database. In particular, the dataset gathered contains information related to feed grades, ore hardness, particle size, mineralogy, pH, and flotation reagents. A systemic approach was applied to fit a multivariate regression model representing the copper recovery in the plant. The systemic approach consists of an initial projection of the characteristic grinding product size (P80), based upon energy consumption at the particle size reduction step, followed by a flotation recovery model. The model allows for an improvement in the investment decision process by predicting performance and risk. The final geometallurgical model uses eight operational variables and is a significant improvement over conventional prediction models. A validation was performed using a recent data-set, and this showed a high correlation coefficient with a low mean absolute error, which reveals that the geometallurgical model is able to predict, with acceptable accuracy, the actual copper recovery in the plant.

Open fire in coal mines is one of the most serious threats to miners, as well as to the mine. Open fire can often be effectively dealt with by prompt local action, otherwise it very quickly becomes uncontrollable. In one incident, none of the available open fire control technologies, viz., water deluge and sprinkler systems, high-expansion foam, high-pressure high-stability nitrogen foam, water misting, and ventilation and pressure control techniques, were effective for saving the mine without sealing from surface, since the fuel-rich environment prohibited underground access due to the methane explosion hazard. The authors have developed a methodology for dealing with advancedstage open fires underground by the application of a modified ventilation control technique. It is based primarily on a better understanding of the behaviour of open fires, proper diagnosis of the problem, application of judicious ventilation control techniques, and selection of suitable fire indices for assessing the status of an open fire. This methodology was used to successfully control an open fire in Surakachhar 3 and 4 incline mine Surakachhar, central India. The fire area was sealed underground and production subsequently resumed in record time. The paper discusses the behaviour of open fires, particulars of the mine, diagnosis of the problem, experimentation methods, and the results obtained.

The paper deals with the technologies required for opening up anew idealized ultra-deep level mine. First the overall philosophy of accessing ore at ultra depths is discussed. Then the individual technologies which will be required are explored. Finally a detailed overview on one of the key technologies, namely tunnel support, is given. Because this project is still in its infancy, few definitive answers are provided; instead each of the envisaged technologies are briefly discussed, with emphasis on those which require the element of speed for rapidly accessing the ore body.

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of existing forms of subcontracting in the South African mining industry. A descriptive framework is developed to understand different subcontracting arrangements. We argue that, in order to do so, it is important to distinguish between labour broking and gang subcontracting. Data resulting from a research project (including an analysis of historical sources, interviews with contractors and focus group interviews with mineworkers) is presented to highlight the implications of changing formations of subcontracting for the South African mining industry in the late 1990s. Apart from the subcontracting of ?traditional? functions, such as shaft sinking, access development, catering and hostel maintenance, contractors are now used in ?core? mining activities. In some instances, whole shafts are ?outsourced? to outside agencies. It is argued that certain of the subcontracting arrangements have serious implications for the ability of the mining industry to improve health and safety standards. Some of the practices can potentially result in conflict between different categories of workers, and, as a result, instability in the industry.

Process mineralogy forms an integral part of geometallurgy, with ore body characterisation being but one piece of the puzzle in optimising value derived from ore. This value is not only financial, but importantly speaks to sustainability from environmental and social standpoints. The reactive approach of traditional process mineralogy is increasingly being replaced by predictive methods in the geometallurgical sphere, for which mineralogical information must be timeously acquired on judiciously selected sample sets to understand ore variability and its impact on orebody processing. Such processes are not only metallurgical, but must incorporate mining and waste management protocols. Dwindling resources like water and energy also demand innovative approaches for lowering consumption and/or promoting recycling along the value chain. Addressing such challenges relies on appropriate characterisation of ore behaviour under different process regimes. Coupled with this, emerging characterisation tools are increasingly applied to understand the mineralogy of unconventionallypresented and difficult-to-process ores to meet societal and technology demands. Such tools are often accompanied by the generation of large, computationally intensive datasets, for which data management and storage are key requirements, particularly when deciphering temporal trends in ore and process variability. This paper will elaborate on these themes with examples that highlight the importance of process mineralogy throughout the minerals value chain. The modelling work presented here concerns Ni-bearing steels produced by Imphy Ugine Précision. In such grades, the contents of elements such as silicon or titanium must be precisely controlled by slag/metal treatments. The slag phase is described by IRSID slag model that has been slightly revised in order to better fit recent SiO2activity measurements in the low SiO2content domain of the CaO-Al2O3-CaO system. The metallic alloys are described by the unified interaction parameter model (UIPM). Laboratory-scale tests were conducted at Mintek for the production of titanium powder from particulate Kroll sponge by the hydrogenation-dehydrogenation (HDH) process. The aim of this work was to produce titanium powder for powder metallurgical consolidations. The work involved the production of titanium powder at optimized conditions, which included hydrogenation in a horizontal tube furnace at 600°C for 2 hours, milling using planetary and roller mills, and dehydrogenation in a vacuumed retort fitted in a muffle furnace running at 700°C for 36 hours. The titanium powder produced in this project matched the elemental specifications of commercially available titanium powder, except for high carbon content. Nevertheless, the powder has been tested further in mechanical alloying and has been found suitable for the production of powder metallurgical compacts. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Mining) degree As a partial fulfilment for the degree of B.Sc. (Eng) (mining) at the University of the Witwatersrand, a dissertation was to be completed in the mining industry. This was done at Finsch mine, with the purpose of determining the best solution to the required secondary breaking problem. In order to complete the study of the secondary blasting method available for use in the new block 4, cave mining method at Finsch mine the following problem statement was identified and solved ?The methods currently in use, for the secondary breaking of oversize rocks at their source in the current production levels, are to be investigated, and their applicability to the new block 4mining project determined?. To effectively achieve this problem statement above; time was spent researching and investigating, in depth, the methods that are currently in use at both Finsch and Koffiefontein mines; so as to gain practical knowledge of these. The methods were identified and independently evaluated, taking into consideration factors such as costs of the equipment, time to break oversize rocks, advantages, disadvantages, safety and labour requirements, etc. This in turn then allowed for a direct comparison between the methods and the decision as to the best to apply to the new block 4 production level. The methods that were investigated included: ?Concussion blasting, where concussion bombs and lay-on charges are used to break hang-ups and boulders. ?Drill and blast methods, where holes are drilled in large rocks and charged manually with explosives. ?Emulsion secondary blasting, which is a new project in use at Koffiefontein mine from African Explosives Limited. ?The Ro-BustTM breaking system, a hydro-fracturing breaking system. Once all the methods had been evaluated and compared it was found that the Ro-BustTM Breaking system was the most applicable for the breaking of boulders, with, the Emulsion Blasting System being used for hang-ups. Since 1994, South Africa has been the subject of international attention, especially in regard to its transformation initiatives, which aim to redress the post-apartheid imbalances. Mining, as a major employer and one of the major industries in South Africa, has been the focus of the government?s Black Economic Empowerment initiative with the introduction of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the Broad?Based Socio?Economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining Industry. The historical background to South Africa?s transformation and the role of the mining industry are pivotal to an appreciation of certain aspects of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the Broad?Based Socio?Economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining Industry. The issues around Black Economic Empowerment and the enabling of a smooth transition to the South African mining industry of the future are explored in this paper.
