Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The purpose of this project was to identify constraints that could occur in the current sub-decline shaft at Turffontein Shaft should an increase in production take place. Particular attention was to be paid to the transportation of men and materials and to the broken rock and ventilation capacity of the shaft. This project is an in-depth evaluation of the logistic capacity of the sub-decline system at Turffontein Shaft in order to determine by how much production can be increased in this area to replace tonnages from the vertical shaft area, where ore reserves are rapidly becoming depleted.

This paper presents a compilation of physical properties of rocks from the Bushveld Complex. The database consists of more than 900 measurements each of thermal conductivity and density. The data are well distributed from localities around the Complex and most rock types are well represented. Thermal conductivity and density are shown to vary widely in the ranges 1.8-4.2 W m-1K-1and 2600-4200 kg m-3respectively. Although only 190 heat capacity measurements are available, this parameter is quite uniform for most rock types present, 800-900 J kg-1K-1, except for chromitite, which has a lower average, 750 J kg-1K-1. Rocks encountered in deep platinum mines are particularly well characterized and this has important implications for prediction of mine refrigeration requirements. The heat flux into a semi-infinite region with properties typical of the Bushveld Complex as a function of time is substantially lower than an equivalent model for the Witwatersrand Basin.

Geologists, engineers, technicians and surveyors have successfully utilized technical software in the mining industry for over 30 years. Software for processing survey, geology, mine engineering and planning information make these functions more efficient by automating repetitive tasks and reducing data processing errors. While these systems have been improved incrementally overtime, new systems that represent giant leaps in technology have been introduced to help mining operations increase productivity and reduce costs. However, their widespread use within the industry has left individual companies without a competitive advantage. Additionally, the ability of these applications to provide the productivity improvements required in today’s uncertain market conditions has since peaked. The next wave of technology—integration of independent software applications—is just starting to emerge and will have a significant effect on the productivity of mining operations. To reap the productivity gains required to remain competitive, mining companies must exploit the collective knowledge and experience of every employee in the organization. Integration of independent software application allows companies to leverage information from all activities, enabling staff to make better decisions to improve productivity. This paper outlines the importance of integration as productivity enabler. Key performance indicators, strategic mine planning, resources management and mine-to-mill integration are discussed as processes that enable productivity. The Gemcom Enterprise Mining System (GEMS)is introduced as the industry’s first integrated solution that enables these productive processes. The paper concludes with a comment on the level of change required to realize the benefits of integration.

A structurally-based viscosity model for fully liquid silicate slags has been developed and applied to the Al2O3-CaO-‘FeO’-SiO2system at metallic iron saturation. The model links the slag viscosity to the internal structure of melts through second nearest neighbour bonds concentrations taken from the quasi-chemical thermodynamic model. This viscosity model describes experimental data over the whole temperature and composition ranges within the Al2O3-CaO-‘FeO’-SiO2system at metallic iron saturation and can now be applied to other industrial slag systems.

The environmental impact of solid waste materials is closely linked to their potential to produce a hazardous leachate once deposited in a landfill. This potential is conventionally assessed with simple laboratory batch leach tests, which find more and more frequent application also in the minerals and metals industry. Such tests are intended to help distinguish between high and low risk wastes, but are completely unsuitable to allow quantitative prediction or modelling of the long-term leachate generation potential. In the present approach the leachate generation process is perceived as a combination of bulk convective transport, stagnant zone and inner particle diffusion, as well as reaction kinetic effects. Model equations are formulated accordingly. A modelling frame work, WASTESIM, has been developed at UCT, which allows flexible combination of the model components and simulation of leach scenarios. Quantitative model parameters are obtained from a systematic laboratory study on the waste material in question. The combined assessment and modelling approach is demonstrated with a study on Cr (VI) leaching from a ferro-chromium slag material. Although not straightforward, the approach is particularly useful in determining long-term liabilities in the context of waste disposal sites with considerably more reliability than has previously been possible. Application of magnetic separation was investigated for the enrichment of colemanite ores by removing the magnetic gangue fraction. The detailed XRD analysis of the ore has indicated that the gangue fraction is composed predominantly of the iron-bearing silicates such as smectite and, to a lesser extent, illite. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of the colemanite and gangue samples have proved that colemanite is diamagnetic in character whereas gangue fraction is weakly paramagnetic to allow the removal of this fraction by magnetic separation. Magnetic separation of the crushed and sized ore samples (-5 mm +75 µm) was performed using a high intensity permanent magnetic separator. Under the test conditions a colemanite concentrate (41.29 wt.% B2O3) was found to be produced from the crushed ore (30.76 wt.% B2O3) at a recovery of 96.76%. These findings suggest that magnetic separation has great potential as an alternative process for the production of a concentrate of commercially sufficient grade.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) plays a fundamental role in the national and local economies of resource-rich countries in Africa. As such, more effort must be geared towards fostering this type of economic activity to sustain livelihoods in rural communities. Across Africa, efforts to operationalize ASM based on a sustainable development framework have been quite tedious and often ineffective. This is because most of these frameworks lacked context and an understanding of the continuum from the artisanal through small-scale and up to the junior miner, grouped under the general term ?ASM?. Driven by the need to contextualize some of the definitional issues in this niche sector, and gain a clearer understanding of their peculiar challenges, this paper aims to contribute to the debate on ASM by considering two of Africa?s resource-rich countries ? Ghana and South Africa. Since South Africa has made greater inroads in protecting the interests of small-scale miners, we thus draw comparisons from both countries? approach to ASM, outline the lessons learnt, and provide recommendations regarding the ways forward.

A new process comprising metallizing reduction, magnetic separation, and electroheat melting separation is proposed with the aim of achieving high recoveries of iron, vanadium, and titanium from vanadium titanomagnetite. The effects of magnetic intensity, reduction temperature, reduction time, carbon ratio, and coal particle size on the efficiency of reductionmagnetic separation were investigated, the reaction mechanisms elucidated by SEM and EDS analysis, and the optimal process parameters established. Recoveries of up to 80.08% for titanium, 95.07% for iron, and 71.60% for vanadium were achieved. The reduction sequence is shown to be: Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe; Fe2TiO5 ? Fe2TiO4 + TiO2 ? Fe + FeTiO3 ? Fe + FeTi2O5 ? Fe + TiO2.

Geology, and the detailed understanding of its properties, are fundamental to the optimal design and successful operation of any mine. To that end extensive fieldwork has been conducted at Anglo Platinum?s PPRust operation to collect geotechnical information both from exploration boreholes and in-pit mining faces. Since 1998, geotechnical data has been collected from over 337 km of exploration core, 7 km of exposed mining faces and more than 15 600 field and laboratory tests, in order to define the complete set of geotechnical properties for each rock type in the mining area. The geotechnical information collected is stored in two databases, SABLE Warehouse and MineMapper3D before it is imported into the Datamine mining software package. The geotechnical parameters, mining rock mass rating system (MRMR), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), fracture frequency per metre (FF) and rock quality designation (RQD), are modelled using geostatistics to generate a 3D geotechnical block model. Data is interpolated between exploration boreholes and exposed mining faces and modelling is constrained, using wireframes, by rock type and structural features. By having detailed geotechnical information available in a 3D model that can be readily accessed and interpreted, significant production optimisations, feasibility studies and planning initiatives can be implemented. From a slope design perspective the model is used to target data deficient zones and highlight potentially weak rock mass areas. As this can be viewed in 3D, the open pit slopes can then be designed to accommodate the poor quality area before it is excavated. It also follows that geotechnical zones can be readily identified and the slopes optimised accordingly. Rather than viewing the drill and blast department as an isolated cost centre and focussing on minimising drill and blast costs, the fragmentation requirements of the comminution and load and haul business areas are studied. It is well understood that chemical energy is the cheapest form of comminution and that major downstream benefits can be derived by increasing drill and blast expenditure. 238 blasts were assessed to determine the optimum fragmentation requirements for ore and waste. Based on the study a mean fragmentation target of 150 mm was set for delivery to the crushing circuit and a mean fragmentation of 230 mm was set for waste loading from the pit. Substantial benefits have been realised in the drill and blast department by developing empirical correlations that relate the MRMR values in the geotechnical model to a blastability index, fragmentation, required powder factor and costs. A quantitative rockburst hazard assessment procedure was introduced on Elandsrand Gold Mine at the end of 1994. It is currently used to evaluate the seismicity-related risk in production areas on the mine. Six parameters related to seismicity, geology, mining layout, and production are rated and results are used as a planning tool on a regular basis. The applied assessment can be considered successful in that it promotes awareness of the seismic hazard and provides an opportunity to address seismicity-related mining problems. A comparison between high risk panels and those working areas with rockburst incidents showed that high hazard ratings reliably forecast the occurrence of larger events in the following month but they do not necessarily predict those working places with rockburst-related accidents. From this one may conclude that high levels of seismicity do not coincide with high rockburst rates.

Strategic and tactical planning are both required in the mining industry but have completely different objectives and require different environments. If these are not fully understood, then the best value for a mining operation may not be realized. This paper examines the differences in these approaches and how they interface in the mining environment. The objectives, content, skills required and the implied management issues for these two components are examined with the hope that this will assist management and the planning teams in defining their respective roles and expectations. The opinions are those of the author based on his experience on several mining operations and projects.

Non-transfer-arc linear plasma systems are highly suited to manufacturing nanoparticles. In this paper, the manufacturing of such particles with specially designed plasma systems is discussed. In general, it entails the volatilization of a metal halide that is injected in the high-temperature region of a plasma flame, where it is reacted with a suitable reagent, for example O2, to produce nanooxide powders. Metal powders can also be introduced directly in the plasma. Due to the very short residence time of only milliseconds in the reaction zone, as well as the fact that the reaction takes place in the gas phase, combined with very rapid quenching in the order of 10 000°C.s-1, nanoparticles are produced. At Necsa the manufacturing of such particles has been demonstrated on various scales. A pilot plant for the production of nano-Al2O3, and two pilot plants, one using SiCl4 and the other one using SiF4 as feed material, were built to produce fumed, pyrogenic, nano-SiO2. The alumina plant had a production rate of 8?10 kg.h-1 and the silica plants had production rates of 2 and 10 kg.h-1 respectively. Perfectly spherical alumina particles with a particle size distribution of between 10 and 200 nm were produced on a continuous system. Particle size analysis for the silica by SEM measurements showed a d50 of 60 nm and a particle size distribution of 30?100 nm. The specific surface area was in the range of 170m2.g-1. Other samples of plasma produced nanoparticles such ZnO and B4C will also be presented.

Driefontein Consolidated Limited has a proud history in the South African gold mining industry dating back to March 1945 with the formation of the West Driefontein Gold Mining Company. The reclamation gold plant at West Driefontein was originally built as a uranium recovery plant in 1970. With the collapse of the uranium oxide yellow cake market, the uranium plant was closed in 1988and successfully converted into a gold plant, recovering gold from repulped tailings dams1. The West Driefontein Reclaim plant utilized milling, leaching, conventional rotary vacuum filtration and cementation to recover the gold at a rate of 200,000 dry tons per month. The No. 1 tailings dam (at a head grade of 0.8 Au g/t) began to near the end of its life during 1996, and the next slimes dams to be treated, the No. 2tailings dam (at a lower head grade of 0.56 Au g/t) was found too marginal for reprocessing using the filtration technology. Alternate technologies were investigated, particularly the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant based on the Anglo-American Corporation (AAC) pump-cell technology at the Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company?s East gold plant which was operating profitably at lower head grades2. The AAC pump-cell technology is based on the carousel mode of operation2. The suitability of CIP technology for the West Driefontein Reclaim plant was investigated using a pilot plant pump-cell supplied by Kemix The data gathered were utilized in sizing a full scale AAC pump-cell plant. This plant was motivated, built and commissioned on the 22nd of November 1996. Incorporating 6 eighty cubic metre AAC pump-cells. The West Driefontein Reclaim plant initially treated repulped slimes dam material. A subsequent change of feed material to current arisings (from the main gold plant) occurred in1997 in order to convert mills for waste rock treatment. Currently the reclaim plant treats a combination of current arisings and waste rock (milled at the reclaim site). The new CIP plant replaced twenty-seven rotary vacuum filters. A comparison between the filters and CIP in terms of operating costs was undertaken, as well as a performance analysis of the CIP plant to determine its flexibility in terms of variation of the throughput, pulp density, gold input, leaching efficiency prior to CIP, and the rate of carbon movement.

A detailed analysis of the geomechanical behaviour in rock cutting with a diamond saw is provided to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the process. The energy of elastic deformation (before failure) and plastic deformation (post failure) was determined in uniaxial compression tests as well as the energy consumed per unit volume in the cutting process. The test samples are White and Ruivina marbles from Borba - Vila Viçosa in Portugal. Correlations between total deformation specific energy and cutting specific energy, normal and tangential forces and diamond indentation are analysed, and some conclusions are presented.

CaF2is often used as a fluoride addition to the chloride salt flux in the melting of aluminium scrap. The solubility of CaF2in the chloride salt system is limited. Dissolved CaF2is considered to improve the properties of salt fluxes. Experimental investigations indicated that the solubility ofCaF2in 70 wt % NaCl/30 wt % KCl, German salt flux used in aluminium scrap melting, might be lower than expected according to literature data. The pseudo binary section CaF2-(70 wt % NaCl-30 wt % KCl) was investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA). The determined solubility of CaF2appeared to be considerably lower than presented in the literature. The pseudo binary section calculated using thermodynamic data partially confirmed the results. DTA allowed us alsoto determine the crystallization temperature interval of the two phase eutectic consisting of the solid solution NaCl-KCl and CaF2. This paper reports on recent field observations on the performance of support systems under different corrosion environments in Canadian underground mines. Phenomenological data are used to gain a better understanding of the main causes of corrosion in underground metal mines. Preliminary field data collected from five metal mines have been complemented by atmospheric and water sample analysis as well as fractography and metallographic studies. This has identified dominant factors that control the corrosion of support systems. The data are analysed in order to develop a support strategy for mines operating in corrosion environments.

Titanium sponge, which is almost pure titanium, is extremely ductile and not easily processed into titanium powder. One method of producing powder is the hydride-dehydride (HDH) process, where titanium sponge is hydrided to form brittle titanium hydride (TiH2). Titanium hydride is easily milled to produce powder and is then dehydrided to form Ti powder. In this work, titanium hydride powder obtained from titanium sponge was used as a starting material for blending and mechanical alloying with elemental powders. Firstly, titanium hydride powder was blended with aluminium elemental powder to produce a homogenized powder, which was then compacted and sintered to produce powder metallurgy compacts. Secondly, titanium hydride powder was mechanically alloyed with aluminium elemental powder and then compacted. The mechanically alloyed powder was characterized in terms of particle size distribution, morphology and microstructure. In both blending and mechanical alloying, the green compacts were characterized by assessing the green density, while the sintered compacts were characterized by their sintered density, microstructure, and hardness. The two processes have resulted in the formation of TiA13 intermetallic compound. It was established that by simple mixing and homogenizing, titanium hydride can be used as a starting material to produce powder metallurgy components in which porosity is a benefit rather than a problem, much akin to metallic foams. From the products obtained in the TiHz-Al system, it appears that titanium hydride can be used as a precursor in mechanical alloying. However, the possible formation of complex hydrides may introduce detrimental properties, and needs to be further investigated. For the production of non-porous components, it would be advisable to dehydrogenate the TiH2 powder before milling i.e. producing titanium powder by the hydride-dehydride (HDH) method. Technical publications in the field of mining and metallurgy have existed for a long time. Recent developments in electronic publishing on websites make it possible to disseminate information more widely and cost-effectively than before. Professional societies have an opportunity to serve their members and their industry by publishing high-quality peer-reviewed papers on their websites as well as in printed form. Older publications can be scanned, and optical character recognition used to provide searchable text. Various business models exist around this process. This paper outlines the approach used by the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) to provide free open access to their journal papers and conference proceedings, as well as the work being done by OneMine.org to collect technical papers from a number of international societies and make them available to subscribers via a large database. An approach is outlined that should be of benefit to authors, readers, and society at large.

This study was undertaken to generate a locally relevant guideline for the socio-economic aspects of mine closure for South African closure practitioners and decision makers. It should also represent a resource for interested and involved stakeholders. Mine closure, and its related post-closure social, environmental and economic characteristics, is part of the lifecycle of mining operations, given the finite nature of the ore resource. Many coal mines are anticipated to close in the next ten to fifteen years in Mpumalanga, as the epicentre of the industry shifts towards the Waterberg. Social aspects of mine closure have been historically underplayed, and under researched. Coaltech thus commissioned two studies, the first of which examined the closure dynamics of 36 mines in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. A follow-up study (July 2007) focusing on Mpumalanga3,4 confirmed some of the results of the first study. It also contained broad guidelines for mine closure covering social and labour planning, job creation, the use of mine infrastructure, developmental incentives, and environmental rehabilitation.

Direct reduced iron (DRI), produced by the reaction between iron ore and reducing gasses, is used as a source of low-residual iron, in addition to ferrous scrap and pig iron, in the production of steel mainly through the electric arc furnace (EAF) route of steelmaking. The main DRI technologies in use are those of Midrex and Hyl, but in recent years a myriad of newer processes emerged based on variations in feedstock, reducing agent and fuel sources. Since the beginning of the nineties, DRI has increasingly emerged as a cheaper, low-residual iron feedstock for EAFs, which have traditionally relied almost entirely on ferrous scrap feed. The main stimulus behind the interest in DRI has been the increasing popularity of the EAF and the ?mini-mill? set-up as the favoured steelmaking option compared to the traditional and much less flexible blast furnace/ basic oxygen converter. This, however, has been creating a problem with regard to availability of low-residual scrap, resulting in upward pressure on high quality scrap prices and leaving DRI, traditionally the ?expensive alternative?, as a much more competitive consideration. The second main determinant has been the increasing production efficiency of existing steel plants which, in the light of improvements such as continuous casting and near net shape casting, has been constraining the supply of low-residual domestic scrap, traditionally the prime source of EAF feed. The explosion of current and proposed DRI projects has been accentuating the mounting interest of global role-players in assuring the availability of reliable sources of low-residual iron units for the future, especially in cases where definitive competitive advantages exist with regard to proximity to primary sources of iron ore and fuel (gas or coal).
