SUMMARY: Geotechnical problems often lead to an increase of construction time and costs for large highway and railway projects. Some reasons, which have led to failures and thus to a delay of construction works as well as to increasing costs, are demonstrated by means of case histories, in which the author was involved as expert or planner. Proposals are made how to identify the reasons and to avoid repetitions. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Bei Großprojekten der Verkehrsinfrastruktur stehen häufig geotechnische Aufgabenstellungen im Vordergrund. Wegen geotechnischer Probleme kam und kommt es häufig zu Termin- und Kostenüberschreitungen. Anhand einiger Beispiele, bei denen der Autor als Gutachter und Planer beteiligt war, wird gezeigt, welche Ursachen zu Schadensfällen und damit auch zu Termin- und Kostenüberschreitungen geführt haben. Es werden Hinweise und Anregungen gegeben, wie die Ursachen erkannt und Wiederholungen von Schadensfällen vermieden werden können. RÉSUMÉ: À grands projets de l'infrastructure de la circulation, souvent des tâches géotechniques sont au premier plan. Par suite de problèmes géotechniques, souvent des dates et frais ont été dépassés. Au moyen de quelques exemples, à lesquels l'auteur participait comme expert et planificateur, les causes sont mises en vue qui menaient à des cas de dommage et par cela aussi à des dépassements de dates et frais. Des indications et suggestions sont données pour s'apercevoir des causes et éviter des répétitions de cas de dommages.

"SynopsisRotary drilling with rolling tricone bits is the most widely used method for drilling large-diameter blast-holes in large surface mining operations. This drilling method is applicable to a wide range of soft to hard rock materials. This paper presents a fuzzy model for predicting the penetration rate of tricone rotary blast-hole drilling. The model is based on data obtained during the drilling of blastholes in rocks with various uniaxial compressive strengths in the Veliki Krivelj open pit mine, Bor, Serbia. The model was developed using the fuzzy logic toolbox of MATLAB with the Mamdani inference system. The fuzzy model was tested with 23% of the total dataset. The results obtained show the high reliability of predicting the penetration rates. Falkie summarized the following formal contribution prepared jointly with Dr R. V. Ramani, describing the work that has been done at the Pennsylvania State University in the development of simulation programs for mine planning over the past 15 years:During the late 50's and early 60's, Monte Carlo simulators were developed to model continuous miner-shuttle car transport systems, track haulage systems, belt conveyor networks, etc. In the mid-60's attention was directed towards deterministic simulation of equipment performance, given the equipment characteristics and the system profile. In the late (10's all these systems (miners, shuttle cars, belts and trains) were integrated together to form a complete coal mine simulator and the program could predict the output potential of the system, given the mining dimensions, method and equipment employed. The actual sequence of coal-cutting operations is entered into the computer through the use of a special programming language which permits any type of mining configuration to be simulated. The simulator is hybrid in nature in that the shuttle cars, trains and belts are simulated deterministically, whereas rate functions with delay frequencies are entered for the continuous mining operations of sumping, shearing, fleeting, cleaning, etc. With suitable manipulation of the data, the program may be applied to all belt or conventional mining sections. The conventional visualisation method of remote equipment is through the installation of one or more cameras on the machine, and sending a live feed to the operator’s flat display. However, the performance of the teleoperation can be enhanced using better visualisation through virtual reality (VR). This paper presents the process of the design and manufacturing of a robotic platform that will be used in the next phase of the project for a VR-assisted teleoperated excavator. The robot consists of a loading boom and arm arrangement installed on the undercarriage of a CAT300-9D. All hydraulic cylinders are replaced with electric actuators, and crawling motors are substituted by electric motors. The pieces of the boom and the arm, as well as the bucket were designed in Autodesk Inventor, and manufactured from aluminium sheets using a desktop and CNC machine. Parts are joined by pins and welding as needed. An Arduino-based control system is developed for the robot, and motor controllers are used to convert the power commands from the microcontroller to the high-amperage actuators. The control system is capable of communicating with a wireless Play Station controller to operate remotely. The manufactured robotic excavator is planned to be utilised in multiple autonomy research projects.

"Mining companies globally are currently facing severe economic and financial challenges. In addition to global challenges, the South African mining industry has to face other operational challenges that are unique to the country and which threaten the survival and competitiveness of the industry. Profit margins are being squeezed by rising costs and decreasing commodity prices, while labour productivity is greatly affected by intermittent labour unrest. This paper analyses how the South African gold mining industry has performed pre-, during, and post the global financial crisis of 2008. The competitiveness of the industry in terms of labour productivity and industry cost curve position is analysed for the period 2006–2013 to assess the impacts of both the global financial crisis and labour unrest. An analysis of the South African gold mining industry is presented at company as well as mine level. Productivity measure in this paper is limited to labour productivity, in line with limited reporting on productivity. All the data analysed was obtained from the public domain. IntroductionSouth Africa dominated the world as the number one gold producer until 2009 when China took that position, and today South Africa ranks fifth after China, Australia, Russia, and the USA. According to Statistics South Africa (2009), South Africa still had about 30 years of production in the gold sector, a forecast that fluctuates based on the day’s modifying factors. Although South Africa has a comparative advantage in terms of minerals endowment, there are challenges faced by the mining industry that hinder translation of the comparative advantage into a competitive advantage. The industry continually seeks to address these challenges to remain competitive in global markets while addressing national and community needs.Neingo and Cawood (2014) argued that stakeholders in mining are continually concerned with mine management’s ability to translate use inputs effectively into quality outputs. They further suggested close monitoring of effective utilization of people, materials, and money to obtain maximum production of commodities under given conditions. Productivity is measured in various ways, including unit cost, output per employee, and output per unit capital equipment"

Casting, cooling and crushing/sieving of ferroalloys has followed a well-established pattern in the whole ferroalloys industry for many years. Usually liquid metal or alloys are cast into flat open moulds of various shapes and forms, and after solidification the product is removed from such mould to further cool down to a temperature where subsequent handling steps are feasible. Common to all mechanical product fractioning is the generation of dust and fine size material with lower product value. For almost 10 years, Bécancour Silicon has investigated alternative roads to improve technology and/or reduce or solve problems related to those disadvantages. Since 1995 Bécancour Silicon operates a special silicon granulation plant targeted to product for the chemical treatment/conversion of silicon for silicones production. Prior to the development of the granulation process, various systems had been evaluated, among others the vibrating casting bed, now in operation elsewhere but judged inappropriate because of the tapping volumes to be handled at Bécancour Silicon and other disadvantages. After evaluation of all aspects of heat transfer, radiation, and conductivity in relation to transfer media and within the product, a novel system was designed and built.

Deep hardrock mines worldwide increasingly face rockbursts as mining depths increase. These events result from the accumulation and sudden release of stress, causing rockmass damage and posing major safety and operational challenges. This paper focuses on destress blasting as a critical strategy to mitigate rockburst hazards. Although limited practical experience exists in Swedish deep hardrock mines, international case studies demonstrate that, when well implemented, destress blasting redistributes peak stresses by promoting controlled fracturing around mining excavations. The success of such techniques is highly dependent on site-specific factors such as stress regime, rockmass brittleness, structural geology, and blast layout. Although destress blasting is especially effective in massive, brittle rock under high stress, typical conditions for strainburst prone environments, its design cannot rely solely on numerical models. Simulations can offer preliminary evaluation of stress redistribution trends and guide early design assessments but their current limitations, including sensitivity to input data and simplified fracture mechanics, mean they are best used as supplementary tools rather than final decision-makers. Field trials, supported by microseismic analysis and fracture mapping, remain essential for validation. The study critically synthesises international experiences and presents a structured framework for destress blasting design, offering practical and academic perspectives aligned with Swedish geological conditions to support safer and more efficient application in deep hardrock mines.

Please allow me the temerity to reply to your reply to my contribution as follows: A fracture is brittle if plastic deformation is absent or, conversely a fracture is ductile if plastic deformation is present. Consequently, brittleness is specified by the degree of plastic deformation at fracture. This is the generally accepted definition. If other material properties (e.g. the quorient or the product of the uniaxial compressive and tensile strengths) under certain conditions are influenced by brittleness, or brittleness by them, these should not be called brittleness. If the one or the other author does that, he simply uses imprecise language. Even your remark, that ?Inyang and Pitt (1990) stated that the ratio of the compressive strength (sc/st) is directly proportional to brittleness?, confirms that the two quantities are not considered the same. For example:? The well known definition that a material is linear?elastic if the strain is directly proportional to the stress?does not mean that stress (measured in MPa) and strain (measured in %) are the same thing.

Silicon metal as a commodity material is produced by carbothermic reduction of quartz in electric submerged arc furnaces, where CO2 forms as a by-product. Since 1997 the Norwegian Ferroalloy Producers Association have been engaged in research programmes aiming for reduced CO2-emissions associated with fossil carbon in their processes. One important issue has been to study how charcoal and wood chips perform compared to coal and coke in the silicon process. The ability of the carbon-rich reduction materials to react with SiO-gas is commonly assumed to be of large importance to the performance of the process. Based on laboratory experiments with different carbon materials, combined with estimation of parameters in a mathematical model of the reaction between carbon and SiO-gas, a foundation for a theoretical study of the performance of the carbon materials in a silicon furnace is established.

"This paper develops themes explained at two SAIMM platinum conferences. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long-term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can be increased significantly, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. Recent studies of NPV have aimed to simultaneously evaluate the impact of the optimized financial solution on the non-financial features of a project or operation.The case study presented comprised a commercially orientated review of the prefeasibility study designs and cost estimates of a platinum group metal (PGM) project in South Africa, followed by value chain optimization and sustainability studies of the project carried out simultaneously to identify potential value uplifts to be gained and guide the owners’ team going forward into the feasibility study phase. Some of the major aspects of the project that were found to have significant potential to add value included enhancement of the business model by the application of activitybased costing and theory of constraints, focus on the highest net value portions of the orebody in the early years of production, enhanced and optimized scheduling of the underground mining operation, application of dynamic grind and percentage mass recovery from ore to flotation concentrate (also known as percentage mass pull) to optimize revenue, application of elevated cut-off grades early in the life of mine, matching of the mining and processing capacity, expansion of the operation subject to capital availability, and installation of downstream processing facilities subject to regional third-party capacities.The investigation of non-financial project features focused on demonstrating that a financially optimized solution could also have a number of other benefits. These are mentioned briefly in the paper, which aims to present the status of the project at an early stage of its development."

With the end of the official apartheid legislation in the early 1990s, South Africa was heralded as a non-racial country. However, racial awareness has been reintroduced into the country with the Affirmative Action and Black Economic Empowerment legislation. Gender and racial transformation are the current order of the day. All organizations are required to reflect in their make-up the demographics of the population as soon as possible. Scorecard shave been drawn up to measure the rate of transformation for gender and race in organizations. The mining industry in South Africa has been in the forefront of this transformation legislation and scorecards. This paper seeks to show the effect of gender and racial transformation on mining engineering education and professionalism by analysing the changing demographics of graduating mining students at both the South African universities offering a degree in mining engineering, the professional registration of mining engineers with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), and the membership of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the vocational institute for mining engineers. It also demonstrates the absurdity of gender and racial quotas based solely on the demographics of the current population of the country. This paper shows the degree to which mining engineering has transformed in both gender and race.

In view of decreasing head grades, the relatively high gold price, and recent developments in metal evaluation, an exercise was initiated to determine the extent of gold concentration, the mode of occurrence, and the areas of concentration within the run-of-mine milling circuits of Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited. The total gold content of three of the thirteen run-of-mine mils in the Group was measured as a typical lock-up of approximately 200 kg per mil. The majority of this gold was concentrated either behind the grid-type body liners or within the pockets of the body liners. This paper is an account of the experimental procedure and the results obtained, and highlights possible means of limiting gold lock-up in future.

"Metix has introduced a three-piece ’deep-cooled’ copper slag tapblock into a six in-line copper matte settling electric furnace. The tapblock was designed without any internal refractory; it relies purely on the development and maintenance of a freeze lining on its hot face and within the tapping channel to protect the copper and promote the integrity of the surrounding endwall refractory lining. In addition, the geometry of the tapblock further supports the sidewall refractories, reduces the impact of funnelling and, therefore, the need for premature rebuilding of the furnace endwall, and facilitates easy removal and replacement of the wear components even under ’hot’ furnace conditions. Eighteen thermocouples embedded in the copper components ensure full resolution of the copper condition, enabling plant personnel to identify wear rates, estimate freeze lining thickness and stability, and schedule replacement of spares and wear components well in advance.At the time of writing the tapblock had been in operation for 6 months with approximately 350 000 t of slag having been tapped through it. Every indication is that the design will limit the need for premature relining of the furnace endwall due to rapid deterioration of the tapblock and its surrounding refractories. IntroductionNonferrous furnaces rely heavily on the maximization of refractory campaign life to increase profitability and reduce planned downtime. In large electric copper slag-cleaning furnaces utilizing insulating linings, campaign lives of six or more years are realistic if consideration is given to each aspect that can degrade the refractory lining during the campaign. An area that is particularly vulnerable is the slag tap-hole and the local surrounding refractory. To avoid premature relining of the furnace walls, every effort should be made to consider not only the tap-hole design itself, but also the selection of the sidewall refractory material and its construction immediately adjacent to the tap-hole, and furthermore the interplay between the tapblock and this adjacent refractory. A holistic approach to the design that considers these interdependent features in the slag tapping area can reduce the incidence of accelerated refractory wear (‘funnelling’), support the surrounding refractories to prevent their collapse, introduce easily replaceable wear components that can be exchanged with the furnace still ‘hot’, and encourage and maintain a stable freeze lining at the refractory hot face that maximizes the tapblock and refractory lifetime."

Increased chromium levels lead to operating problems. Attempts to increase the chromium solubility in the slag by a variety of techniques create other difficulties. The authors have developed a technique for removal of the chromium spinel interface along with the matte for subsequent separation outside the smelting furnace by utilising differential solidification in the ladle. The process has been patented internationally with support from the Innovation Fund.

This article outlines various projects implemented at Rand Refinery to reduce effluent generation and freshwater consumption. The refinery generates about 2800 m³ of effluent annually and has initiated projects such as granulation water recycle and silver leach optimisation to address these issues. The granulation water recycle project has successfully reduced effluent volumes, while the silver leach optimisation has further decreased effluent by implementing stoichiometric addition of HCl and NaClO3. The vibratory shear enhanced processing (VSEP) trial showed promising results for gold recovery from wastewater, though further trials are recommended. The water savings of the effluent reduction projects are monitored by measuring the amount of effluent pumped to service yard effluent storage facilities with the use of flow meters connected on SCADA. Since the effluent reduction initiative of granulation effluent recycle in FY23, the effluent reduced to 2676 m³. In FY24, the stoichiometric addition of HCl and NaClO3 was implemented in the silver leach process, further reducing the effluent to 2083 m³.

Experimental results are presented that test the hypothesis that the descaling behaviour of stainless steel slabs following reheating is controlled by interfacial roughening at the scale-steel interface. In this investigation, two stainless steels were considered: type 304 (austenitic, with 18% Cr and 8% Ni) and type 412 (ferritic/martensitic, with 11.6% Cr). It was found that the entanglement that arises at the scale-steel interface was in fact effective in maintaining scale-steel adhesion, under the mechanical descaling conditions used. In the case of type 304, descaling proceeded by fracture along chromite layers, which formed (by internal oxidation) on the austenite grain boundaries; for this steel, the extent of descaling depends most strongly on austenite grain structure, and not primarily on the conditions in the reheating furnace. In contrast, type 412 samples descaled only at the edge of the entangled zone, and showed a greater sensitivity to the reheating conditions; specifically, higher free oxygen in the reheating gas and longer reheating times were found to increase the residual scale thickness. "Although the first large-scale application of copper recovery by solvent extraction (SX) took place in Zambia in the early 1970s, it is only in the last decade that this technology has become widely employed in this part of the world and is now a mainstay unit operation in most copper hydrometallurgical flowsheets. The mineralogy of the ores in the African Copper Belt, and hence the characteristics of the African leach liquors, differ significantly from those in Chile and the south-western USA, where copper SX has had a long and successful history. These differences provide operators, metallurgists, reagent vendors and engineers with many challenges: new approaches are needed to adapt this technology for successful implementation in this region. This paper examines typical operating practice in the African Copper Belt, discusses differences compared with other parts of the world and looks at some of the challenges and opportunities presented by these flowsheets. INTRODUCTION Following the success of the Rancher’s Bluebird and Bagdad solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX–EW) operations in Arizona in the late 1960s, the Tailings Leach Plant at Chingola, Zambia became the first large-scale copper SX plant in the world, commissioned in 1974. Despite the equipment design now being outdated, this plant still continues to operate successfully, indicating the versatility and adaptability of this technology. Today, there are some 75 copper SX operations worldwide with cathode production above 10 kt/a. The top ten producers currently account for some 40% of the global 4.3 Mt/a SX–EW copper production. South America (predominantly Chile and Peru) is the largest copper cathode-producing region, with annual production of some 2 Mt. The Central African Copper Belt (Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)) is second, with cathode production of 1.2 Mt/a and North America (USA and Mexico) third, producing close to 0.8 Mt/a Cu (Cytec data, 2014). The remaining 0.35 Mt/a comes from all other regions combined (referred to as “Rest-of-World”). Current and future operations in Zambia and the DRC are summarised in Figure 1. The industry in this region is characterised by a large number of small (3 to 20 kt/a) plants, mainly Chinese-owned, and a few very large (>200 kt/a) operations, owned by major multinational corporations. This paper examines typical operating practice in the African Copper Belt, discusses the differences compared with other parts of the world and looks at some of the challenges presented by the conditions, as well as innovations in flowsheets, reagents and operating conditions that have been introduced in these circuits."

This paper consolidates the key elements of seven contributions, on strategic long-term planning, to two of the three international conferences on Strategic versus Tactical approaches in Mining held over the period 2005?2008. The holistic concept of strategic long-term planning as developed and implemented at Anglo Platinum is described. Consideration is given to the planning cycle, principles supporting the construction of the long-term plan, and aspects of unique best practice as developed in Anglo Platinum. Further description of Anglo Platinum?s approach to corporate governance, including the processes, methodology, systems, unique tools and techniques that are applied to value and select capital investment options is also given.

The new South African Mineral Policy has major implications on the way mineral rent will be collected and shared between the stakeholders in future. Although the policy does not supply details on how this will be done, drastic departures from practices under the previous dispensation require a new approach. For example, there introduction of the ?right to mine? principle implies that the repealed lease consideration concept will be expanded to all minerals. The new policy also makes provision for predetermined standard terms and conditions for all prospecting and mining permissions. It also states that, regardless of whether the mineral rights are state or privately-owned, all prospecting fees and mineral royalties will be determined by state officials after consultation with the registered holder of the mineral rights. This paper proposes a standard mineral royalty formula that complies with the principles mentioned in the White Paper and has been shown to be internationally competitive.

Sishen Iron Ore Mine is situated 280 km north-west of Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The mine produces and sells high quality iron ore of various specifications to various national and international clients. The saleable product is derived from the blending and beneficiation of different types and qualities of hematite iron ore. This paper documents the new developments which were implemented (or are in the process of being implemented) on the mine in the long-term planning, medium-term planning, grade control and material tracking in the beneficiation plant with special attention being paid to the quality of the final, saleable product. The process starts with the long-term planning where the pit shell and pit optimization is determined by Whittle 4X. New developments include the introduction of a linear programming based scheduling system to enhance the long-term schedule generated by Whittle 4X. The LP route was decided on in order to take into account all the constraining factors of the final product that could not be configured in Whittle. To complement this the XPAC Auto Scheduler scheduling package was introduced to do the medium-term mine scheduling. This 18-month rolling plan includes cost parameters to enable the planner to extract a detailed operational budget from the scheduling while ensuring that production standards are maintained and grade constraints are met. The existing grade control system was enhanced with GPS capabilities and a computer system to do material tracking. The high precision GPS system introduced on the shovels allows for the accurate control of the loading procedures at the mining face. Because of the complicated geology and grade composition of blasting blocks it is imperative to accurately differentiate between different materials in the same blasting block and being able to excavate that with the loading equipment. The GPS system on the trucks allows for accurate location monitoring of dumping in order to keep track of specific material types. The state-of-the-art material tracking system developed for Sishen will enable the grade control officer to keep track and record various parameters of the material from its in situ position in the blasting blocks, through the crusher and onto different stockpiles, in various stages of the beneficiation process and onto the blending beds, into the dispatching trains and eventually into the ships for international distribution. These developments elevate the Sishen planning and grade control systems to a new level of service excellence from which management can obtain accurate and timely information on product status. It also enables Sishen to maximize resource utilization while still complying with the tough market constraints.
