INTRODUCTION The shovelling of rock in stopes is still a basic and important operation in many gold mines in the removal of gold-bearing rock from the stopes. There is, however, little factual knowledge of the factors which influence the the rates of energy expenditure and work output, and of the way in which variations in these factors, individually or in combination, affect the mechanical efficiency of the mine workers. What for example is the influence of different rates of shovelling, shovel loads and distances of throw? How does stope width and dip of the stope affect the mechanical efficiency of men shovelling rock? Recently a simple physiological test was introduced into the gold mining industry for classifying Bantu recruits into those capable of hard, moderate and light work. If this test is used to select only those Bantu mine workers who are capable of hard work for the task of shovelling rock in stopes then the rate of energy expenditure which could be expected from these men is 1.5 litres/min for the entire period of the shift. With an adequate knowledge of the influence of the various factors which affect the rate of energy expenditure of men shovelling rock in stopes it would be possible to set work standards for Bantu mine workers in stopes. This should be done in terms of the rate of shovelling, the shovel load and the distance of throw for any combination of width of stope, dip of stope, condition of foot wall and grade of rock in such a way that the resultant energy expenditure would be the 'optimum' that could be expected from the men but would be within their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (that is, 1. 5 litres/min from the 'average' Bantu mine worker). Work standards could thereby be determined for the different stopes of a mine on a sound and systematic basis. In order to supply the information required a study was carried out by the Human Sciences Laboratory in which the work output and energy expenditures (in terms of oxygen consumption in litres/min) were measured on six highly trained Bantu mine workers under the following conditions: (a) rates of shovelling of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 shovels per minute. (b) loads of from 9 to 18 lb on the shovel. (c) distances of throw from 8 to 20 ft. (d) stope width of 28 in., 42 in. and 72 in. (e) dip of stopes of 0°, 15° and 30°. (f) rough and smooth footwalls and various grades of rock size. This paper gives the main results of practical importance of this study. Method The experiments were designed and conducted in conjunction with the Work Study Department of one certain underground conditions such as variable stope widths, stope angle, etc., were made available in a mine Surface Training School and suitable subjects were selected from the large number of labourers being put through the training school. Subjects Bantu recruits who had returned to the mine for a new contract and who had previous underground experience on shovelling were considered to be suitable as subjects for the experiments. The particulars of the subjects are given in Table I. After the technique was mastered, the men started shovelling rock and were trained for at least four hours per day to work at the higher shovelling rates. Training was continued for three weeks to enable the subjects to achieve a reasonable degree of physical training and conditioning. Shovelling method In both the kneeling and standing positions the subjects faced the pile of rock, grasped the shovel in the accepted manner and pushed the blade of the shovel into the base of the pile of rock, sliding the blade between the rock and the concrete floor. In the standing position (72 in. wide stope) the back leg assisted in the movement by pushing the knee against the back of the hand holding the shovel handle. "The behaviour of rocks depends on their material properties, and therefore it is important that these properties are determined by relevant and reliable laboratory testing methods. The ISRM Suggested Methods are very important documents in this regard, and a draft suggested method exists for the determination of the ’complete stress-strain curve for intact rock in uniaxial compression’. The method specifies the required geometry of specimens and the required testing procedures. The research described in this paper involved the determination of complete stress-strain curves for two materials, one exhibiting the Class I characteristic, and the other the Class II characteristic. To obtain a better understanding of the deformation behaviours in the post-peak region, tests were carried out on specimens of both material types with different length-to-diameter ratios. The results showed that the geometries of the test specimens influence the stressstrain curves in the post-peak region. The implication is, therefore, that the numerical values obtained for the slopes of the post-peak graphs are not material constants, but are geometry-dependent. Explanations for this behaviour are given. These findings have important implications regarding the use of post-peak data, for example for blast fragmentation considerations, and for evaluation of rockbursting potential. The research findings are based on a limited amount of laboratory testing, and should be confirmed by further testing. IntroductionThe most common approach for studying the behaviour of rock is by compression testing of cylindrical specimens in the laboratory. Rocks respond to forces by deforming and eventually breaking. The strength and the deformation characteristics are derived from the stressstrain curves produced. Standard shapes and sizes for the test specimens and standard loading rates are recommended in the Suggested Methods of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. In spite of these standards, there remain certain aspects of testing which require further attention. The research described in this paper deals with deformation and failure behaviour of rock materials using stiff, servocontrolled testing equipment. The particular objective was to test the premise that the behaviour of cylindrical rock specimens in the post-peak region of the stress-strain curves does not reflect only a material characteristic, but is influenced by the height-to-diameter ratio (the geometry) of the rock specimen. An additional objective was to investigate the effect of the stiffness of the test equipment on the outcomes of tests."

The features of smelting slags from South African prehistoric sites and of related cinder material are described. Chemical analyses of twelve slag samples found in the Transvaal, Swaziland, and Botswana are reported and discussed. An attempt is made to establish a relationship between these slags and the ores collected at the Early Iron Age site of Broederstroom, which date between AD 350 and AD 600. The liquidus temperatures of29 slags were determined by the use oh hot-stage microscope. The major mineral phases of 16 slags were identified by X-ray diffraction and microscopic examination. It appears that the slags investigated were formed at temperatures below 1250°C or - in some cases - at temperatures only marginally in excess of 1250°C.

A unique means of obtaining sea-water by G. R. W. WALKER, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Hons.) (Min. Eng.) (Member) Although the mining and treatment operations at The Consolidated Diamond Mines of South West Africa, Limited, are located within an average distance of I km from the Atlantic Ocean, the supply of clear sea-water in large and continuous quantities for use in treatment plants is made difficult by siltation of water-holes and the amount of sand in suspension in the sea itself. The need for sixty million litres of sea-water per day at the new No. 2 treatment plant necessitated the construction of a system that would ensure a continuous and reliable supply. Several sea-water intake schemes were proposed. This paper outlines the need for an improved means of obtaining water and describes the construction of the scheme eventually chosen - a tunnel driven through bedrock for over 400 m beneath the Atlantic Ocean. At the end of the tunnel, two large chambers were excavated from which vertical holes were drilled to intersect the sea-bed.

Mechel, a large, integrated steel, stainless steel, and ferroalloy producer in Russia is committed to upgrading its facilities to world class pyrometallurgical process and environmental practice. Yuzhural Nickel currently uses shaft furnaces to produce a matte containing iron, nickel and traces of cobalt. This rather old technology is thermally inefficient and is characterized by high operating costs. Mechel has investigated suitable equipment and processes to upgrade the plant, and awarded a contract for the construction of a 12 MW DC smelter, located near the town of Orsk, to Bateman Engineering Projects in June 2008. The selection of DC furnace technology for laterite smelting can be considered as a strategic highlight for the pyrometallurgical treatment of low-grade lateritic ores, and could be the first industrial-scale implementation of this technology. This project has been designed to achieve multiple goals including the demonstration of the process and associated equipment technology at commercial scale, to confirm the scale-up design parameters of the forthcoming 2 x90 MW, twin electrode DC furnaces, and to prove the environmental emission superiority of closed furnaces. It also provides a valuable operator training platform. This paper deals with the process design, key technology building blocks and design features which have been incorporated to produce a pyrometallurgical vessel capable of (i) resisting slag superheat and chemical aggressiveness, (ii) process fine material without pre-agglomeration, (iii) achieve high nickel recoveries and(iv) being tolerant to the variations in chemical composition of laterite ore. The approach to increasing campaign lives between partial and complete rebuilds, through the use of composite furnace module (CFM) technology originally developed and patented by the University of Melbourne, is also followed in more detail. Unfortunately, results from hot commissioning and lessons learned from initial operation are not available because the project completion has been delayed due to the worldwide downturn in demand for commodities. The quantitative evaluation of the performance of fill materials placed in gold mine stopes is achieved by (i) measurement of the in-situ load- displacement, or stress-strain, characteristics of the materials; (ii) an objective comparison between the observed fill performance and that predicted from suitable computer modelling techniques; and (iii) objectively comparing conditions in backfilled and conventional stopes. Considerable problems have been experienced with the development of sufficiently robust instrumentation which can be installed within filled pad- docks and give reliable information over a long period of time. However, at most mines where backfill performance is being monitored, it has been possible to correlate stress measurements within the filled paddocks with strain measurements adjacent to the paddocks. The resultant stress-strain curves agree relatively well with those determined in the laboratory. Measurements in the hangingwall strata of filled and unfilled stopes indicate that the placement of fill does reduce the amount of inelastic convergence due to bed separation. Moreover, in some stopes, the rate of convergence with respect to face advance does reduce to that of the theoretical elastic convergence. Quantification of changes in the conditions at the stope face due to placement of fill has proved difficult. Observations indicate that, provided the fill is placed close to the face (- 5 m), and adequate temporary face support is used, conditions in filled panels are superior. In addition, in filled panels the damage caused by a rockburst in the stope and, particularly, in gullies is generally much less than would be expected in an unfilled stope. To quantify these improvements, parameters such as stope height, face advance and the frequency of falls of ground are being monitored.

One of the main bottlenecks in the carbon-in pulp process for the recovery qf gold is the elution procedure, which typically requires the heading of caustic cyanide eluants to high temperatures for 16 to 24 hours. The present work demonstrates that sodium sulphide solution as an alternative eluant can effect complete elution in about 4 hours at ambient temperatures. Elution efficiencies of around 100 per cent were obtained in 4 hours with a single pass of eluant containing 0,2 M Na2S and 0,4 NaOH about 10 bed-volumes of eluant The initial rate was slow over the first hour of elution, probably because the activated carbon catalysed the oxidation of sulphide to polysulphide. Elution efficiencies of around 100 per cent were also obtained in less than 4 hours during the batch elution of carbon at liquid-to-solid ratio of about 100. Lower liquid to solid ratio resulted in the re-adsorption of gold, probably owing to the oxidation of sulphide to polysulphide, with the resultant formation of gold complexes that were eluted less readily. Improved rates of elution were obtained at higher sulphide concentrations and pH values greater than about 13. Higher temperatures increased the initial elution rate, but lowered the overall extraction efficiency, probably because of the deposition of elemental gold on the carbon. Variation of the ionic strength by the addition of NaCl had no defect on the elution, which confirms that the elution mechanism in the case of sulphide is different from that when cyanide or I1)1droxide is used as the eluant. It is proposed that the elution of gold by sulphide solutions proceeds by means of an initial step that involves the reaction of polysulphide ions with the adsorbed aurocyanide speeds, forming AuCN on the carbon and thiocyanate in solution. This step is followed by the formation of poorly adsorbed complexes with sulphide ions, such as [AUS3-2]-The presence of polysulphides, whether generated in situ by the catalytic oxidation effect of activated carbon or by the addition of elemental sulphur, reduces the elution rate and efficiency dramatically. This is probably due to the formation of complexes such as AUS-3 and AUS-2 , which have a high adsorption affinity.

A mineral economic analysis of South Africa's mineral-beneficiation industry, comprising both economic theory and case studies, suggests that the domestic market has proved to be a more effective vehicle for promoting the establishment of advanced beneficiation projects than the availability of domestic raw materials. Although the domestic market plays an important role in the promotion of beneficiation by providing a secure outlet for sales, its most vital role is in the development of technological and marketing know-how that may give South African beneficiated products the competitive advantage required to penetrate export markets. The real wealth of a country lies primarily in the skills of its people rather than in its natural resources, and the domestic market plays a pivotal role in the development of these skills.

There are basic areas of importance within a concentrator or mineral separation plant, which require focus to ensure acceptable recoveries, throughputs remain at an acceptable level and product grades meet specification. Professional and para-professionals within the mineral sands industry are in demand due to the booming resource sector. Added to this, new mineral sands operations are being commissioned straining the industry further. These factors have increased staff turnover and introduced many new people to the industry. It is essential these new entrants are armed with basic plant troubleshooting skills relevant to the minerals sands industry to minimize production lost through poor recoveries. Mineral sands processing does not involve highly technical or sophisticated unit processes. However, success is often slow to arise due to a lack of detailed understanding, as well as managing multiple interrelated unit processes within a plant. Fundamental background physical conditions (such as equipment loading and water quality) must be met for unit processes to be efficient. Technical management of these process plants should always include observation of these background conditions for they often provide the answer to underperformance. Examples are presented with an indication of the possible effects on recovery and product grade.

This paper presents Sicomines’ VSFX copper solvent-extraction project and gives a sight into operating figures for the plant.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. LAYOUT AND STYLE Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis, including a brief statement of conclusions. Index, only if paper is long and involved. Introduction. Development of the main substance. Conclusions, in more detail. Acknowledgements. References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. The Institute is guided in its requirements by: Collins, F. H., Authors & Printers' Dictionary-Oxford University Press. Hart, H. Rules for Compositors and Readers. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King's English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol %is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramms metre per second per second (kg m/s'). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. I, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standardsymbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C shoulrl be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute as a body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications. Reproduction from the Journal is permitted provided there is full acknowledgement of the source. These points should be borne in mind by authors who may submit their work to other organizations as well as to the Institute.

Each year the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy offers a prize (or prizes should the entries warrant it) of up to RlOO for the best paper or dissertation on a topic appropriate to the interests of the Institute. The competition is open to all Student Members of the Institute. A Student Member who is in fulltime study at a university may submit the dissertation or thesis he has to write in part fulfilment of his university degree, provided that it is presented in a manner and on a topic suitable for publication in the journal. Entries for 1976 should reach the Institute by 31st December, 1976.

Because composites offer new solutions to materials problems, they are currently the focus of intense research and development worldwide. However, the natural tendency of users is to remain with tried materials in every situation of material selection. This approach ignores the tremendous advances that have been made in composite materials and their application. These advances enable engineers to tailor composites to suit specific applications such as the demanding needs of mining and industry in South Africa. However, the application of composites, where new and improved components and products are needed or are being developed is often hampered by the limited knowledge and experience of the engineers concerned. This paper presents some of the basic information needed for an appreciation of the terminology, definitions, and properties of various types of composites. It also reviews recent developments in manufacturing technology and product development that may find application in local industries and mining.

Liquidus temperatures in the Cr-Fe-Si system in the composition range representative of ferrochromium-silicide produced in South Africa J. C. M. Wethmar, B.Se. (Eng.) Rand D. D. Howat,U B.Se. Strydom, M.Sc., Ph.D. Alloys in the composition range of chromium, 20 to 50 per cent, iron, 10 to 30 per cent, and silicon, 25 to 55 per cent, were subjected to both differential thermal analysis and the classical quench method so that the liquidus temperatures of ferrochromium-silicide alloys could be determined. The results are presented as liquidus curves on pseudo-binary sections at various ratios of chromium to iron and as liquidus isotherms in the ternary section.

A prize awarded by the SAIMM for outstanding academic achievement by 4th-year and 5th-year diplomates at technikons was instituted several years ago. The Senior Vice-President, Mr J.D. Austin, accompanied by the Institute's Secretary, Mrs D. Gardner, attended a prize-awarding function in the form of a luncheon at the Hotel School of the Technikon Witwatersrand on the 25th May.

"The model described is a design and economic planning tool for analyzing surface mineral deposits. Mineralization, topography, costs and significant geologic features are input to the model. The results are:(i) final pit limits yielding the maximum total profit,(ii) annual cut-off grades and plant sizing yielding the maximum present value, and(iii) annual maps of the pit and annual production statistics for the mine, concentrator and smelter.Additionally, summaries are printed of the block mining sequence and cash flow. A special feature is an option to include dump-leaching operations. Stockpiling of material can also be simulated by the model. The model is built around theories of dynamic cut-off grades and a pit design algorithm. The dynamic cut-off grades maximize present value by examination of all economic and physical constraints for the optimum combination. The pit design algorithm is a set of rules formulated to find the maximum value from a special graph. The graph is different from graphs of analytical geometry, being made up of points and arrows connecting some of the points. These graph elements describe the relationship between any point in the deposit and the material which must be mined to get at that point. The model was designed to bring together the interdependent theories of economics, pit design and production scheduling."

Cyanide is a key contributor to the efficiency of gold extraction. Public perceptions of cyanide are emotive and following some publicised incidents involving cyanide, the gold mining industry established a voluntary cyanide code for the manufacture, transport and use of cyanide in the production of gold. The paper describes the development of the code, its content and the third party auditing of the code as a means of establishing and maintaining benchmark standards. In adhering to the cyanide code requirements, there are overlaps with other management systems such as ISO 14001 and OHASA 18001 and the paper seeks to show how existing mine systems can readily accommodate cyanide code compliance and that operating and auditing the cyanide code can assist in the integration of mine heath, safety and environmental management systems.

Process control optimisation depends a lot on the availability of timely data from production to give operators a chance to make adjustments before potential process upsets or disruptions happen. A lot of data is already available with newer and updated machine technologies, but what about the process upsets coming from the raw materials that we use? They are natural products and therefore they are not of a stable composition or mineralogy. The production process depends on a certain chemical or mineralogical stability of the raw materials when they come to a roaster, kiln or sintering stage. Only then can the proposed reactions take place and the equipment be operated at stable temperatures. Laboratory analytical technologies have the limitation that they depend on representative samples and have a long time delay. Therefore online (real time) analysers are used nowadays in mining applications to obtain an early indication of the actual mined or to-be-processed ore. Most available technologies can only analyse inorganic content on an oxide or elemental level. Near infrared (NIR)- based online analysers can overcome that limitation and give a real time analysis of organic as well as inorganic composition, if required on a mineral level. The paper will present two case studies where the NIR online technology was successfully adapted.: a) Optimising refractory gold ore processing at the Goldstrike roaster operation b) Optimising the sinter process at a Japanese manufacturer.
