Electrical tomography has developed rapidly over the last few years in its sophistication and practical use to enable three-dimensional information on the distribution of phases within flowing mixtures to be observed1. This paper reviews the current state of application from the industrial perspective, drawing on applications case studies based on scaling studies in the laboratory right through to installations on plant. In the laboratory, applications have looked at scale-up of mixing2 processes involving gas-liquid and solid-liquid suspensions3 with a particular interest in verifying computational fluid dynamics simulations or in checking scale-up design4,5. In the processing plant, the circumstances are usually bespoke and may range from simple detection of the degree of homogeneity of a flowing mixture through to the need to measurement a sophisticated batch process such as crystallization, sedimentation, filtering and drying. Examples drawn from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries will be presented and related to the benefits that can be gained through application of the method.

The quality of the concentrator plant process water is crucial for high performing mineral flotation circuits. Significant metal recovery and concentrate grade losses have been noticed particularly in more closed water loops. The recovery and quality losses have started to emerge mainly with decreased freshwater usage and because of changes in tailings management towards tailings thickening, paste, or dry stacking. These changes result in shorter, closed water loops with a rapid build-up of harmful components with negative impact on the beneficiation process. Consequently, water quality has a direct link to decreased product value and sales returns. Complete cleaning or water blending might not be the right way to achieve high recovery and high-quality products. Instead, the key is to understand what kind of water qualities are needed for the flotation of specific minerals. In this study harmful substances in various plant water streams were removed and/or modified by pilot-scale dissolved air flotation. Batch-scale mineral flotation tests with the untreated and treated water were then performed by using fresh ore samples and the plant’s own laboratory flotation procedure. The results indicate that because of dissolved air flotation, the mineral flotation recoveries were enhanced by 1‒3.3%. Underground mines require electricity to operate both the main surface fans and auxiliary systems, with primary ventilation systems typically accounting for approximately 40–60% of the mine’s overall electricity consumption. The primary reason for this considerable expense is that most underground ventilation systems are designed for peak demand, regardless of the actual demand, which is commonly dictated by diesel equipment usage in trackless mining operations. Most platinum mines on the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe tend to operate their ventilation systems at this peak level, despite the mine’s air quantity being well in excess of the ‘true’ ventilation needs. This is due to a lack of appropriate ventilation controls. The authors designed and installed a ventilation-on-demand system at one of the bord and pillar platinum mines to minimize the use of redundant air in underground operations. Fourth industrial revolution techniques were applied to the environmental monitoring and tracking systems thereby optimizing air quantity demands. The mine managed to reduce its annual power consumption by 23% through the implementation of manual control and time-of-day scheduling levels of the ventilationon- demand concept. There was also a 6% productivity improvement, mainly attributable to an increased face time as a result of the significant reduction in the re-entry period following a blast. This paper introduces a novel concept of ventilation optimization through digital transformation targeting mainly room and pillar platinum mines. A system was designed, installed, and commissioned, though there is currently an ongoing optimization process to harness the full benefits such as productivity enhancement, reduced power costs, and improved worker health.

The global coal industry has changed significantly in recent years. In this paper we analyse the coal production and consumption, imports and exports, and coal prices in China and other major coal-producing countries during the past four decades. The analysis shows that global coal production and consumption have declined over the last three years, in striking contrast to the continuous growth for most of the past 35 years. Australia, Indonesia, and Russia have become the world’s major coal providers, while China, India, and the USA, and Germany are the major coal consumers. The world’s, and China‘s, coal industry can be classified into four stages of development: the stable growth phase, stable phase, rapid growth phase, and high-quality phase. Coal prices rose in the world’s four major coal markets in 2016 after four consecutive years of falling prices. The elimination of overcapacity and production-optimizing operations in China could assist in achieving a demand and supply balance.

An editorial in the April 1990 edition of Mining Magazine is worth a wider audience in South Africa, particularly as the SAIMM enters its own centenary decade and the process of change in the minerals industry world-wide makes increasing demands on the professionalism of its leaders. The editorial considers the changing status of engineers, who up to the 1880s had been held in high regard by society. Alumina and bauxite Economists forecast a slower economic growth rate in 1990, but expect continued increase in demand for aluminum at a 3 per cent annual rate during the decade. Structural and numerical analysis Struceng & Femcad (structural analysis and finiteelement method) is a conference and exhibition that is to be held in Grenoble (France) on 17th and 18th October, 1990. It is sponsored by the Institute for Industrial Technology Transfer (ITT-International).

Spontaneous combustion during coal mining operations is a major problem that affects the health and safety of workers and causes environmental problems. The phenomenon is associated with the presence of coal, coal shale, and pyrite. In 2020, a premature detonation incident occurred at an iron ore mine where the waste material contains black carbonaceous shale units known to be associated with pyrite. The spontaneous combustion propensity and properties of samples of the black carbonaceous shales from the mine were examined and compared with samples from the Witbank Coalfield. The spontaneous combustion liability indexes of these samples were correlated with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and proximate and ultimate analyses using linear regression. The Wits-Ehac Index classification results show that the samples were between medium and high risk. The linear regression analysis showed very poor correlations between the Wits-Ehac Index results and the XRF and proximate and ultimate results. The most valuable relationship found is between the presence of relatively high sulphur (greater than 3%) and ground reactivity with nitrate-bearing explosive emulsion.

The rate of reaction between different carbonaceous reducing agents and silicon monoxide gas was studied by the use of a technique developed in Norway by Tuset and Raaness. Argon carrier gas was used to pass a known fixed concentration of silicon monoxide gas through an I1 cm3 sample of precalcined reducing agent at 1650°c. Silicon monoxide gas was generated by the heating of a mixture of silica and silicon carbide, and the progress of the reaction was followed by monitoring the carbon monoxide in the off-gas with an infrared spectrometer. The reactivity of silicon monoxide gas towards a number of carbonaceous reducing agents (charcoal, Iscor coke, Lurgi char, and petroleum coke) was shown to be similar to results obtained with the carbon dioxide reactivity test. The silicon monoxide reactivity test was able to indicate the extent to which fines were generated when the reducing agent was converted to silicon carbide. Of the reducing agents studied, Lurgi char appeared to be the most suitable for the production of ferrosilicon because it has a high reactivity towards silicon monoxide gas and high strength when converted to silicon carbide. So that industry could be given some indication of the suitability of certain reducing agents for the production of ferrosilicon and silicon metal, a reactivity scale similar to that of Tuset and Raaness was constructed that compares the volume of silicon monoxide gas required by a reducing agent to reach a carbon monoxide content of 10 per cent in the off-gas during the conversion of the reducing agent to silicon carbide. This scale assists in the selection of those reducing agents that require less silicon monoxide gas for conversion to silicon carbide, and that give savings in material and power costs because less silicon monoxide gas need be generated in the furnace.

The hydrodynamic characteristics of a mechanical flotation cell’s transportation zone have significant impact on its metallurgical performance, especially on coarse particles recovery efficiency. However, how to define and adjust the transportation zone was seldom investigated by researchers. In this paper a method will be introduced to define the boundary of the transportation zone by PIV measurement. It is found that the transportation zone can be extended upwards by enlarging the entire rotor-stator assembly from the bottom of tank and increasing the jet angle of the impeller. Two control methods have been validated in industry tests on KYF-160m3 and KYF-320m3 air-forced mechanical flotation cells. The result shows coarse particles recovery are both improved distinctly. It is suggested that enlarging the top transport boundary is able to helpful to reduce the floating distance of bubbleparticle aggregates, which contribute to improve coarse particle recovery in large flotation cells. "To reduce production costs and increase efficiency in ageing coal mines, a system that utilizes two shearers in a fully mechanized longwall working face is proposed. Using theoretical and engineering experience, three issues pertaining to the system were determined: (a) the two-shearer mining technique; (b) matching and modifying the equipment; (c) and coal-cutting task allocation for each shearer. Two mining processes are proposed, with the two shearers travelling in either the same or opposing directions. To avoid breakage of chains and pan extrusion of the armoured face conveyor (AFC), the length of the AFC ‘snake’ was controlled. To ensure continuous cutting and transporting of coal, the cross-sectional dimensions of the AFC were checked and the shearer closer to the head drive was modified. Based on the assumption of equal cutting times for each shearer, the meeting position of the two shearers was obtained by using a theoretical model of mining task allocation. Application of this technique at No. 2 Jining Mine, China, has shown remarkable benefits: daily production capacity was increased by 54% and personnel efficiency was improved by 33 t/d per person. IntroductionAll coal mines aim to increase the unit output of the working face to reduce mining costs and improve the economic efficiency of the operation. To achieve this goal, a production model known as one mining face of the mining area has been adopted by most Chinese coal mines (Hu, Meng, and Zhu, 2008; Zhang, Zhang, and Wang, 2000). Under these conditions, the main technical approaches to maximize the output are increasing the width of the working face (Qu, Xu, and Xue, 2009) and accelerating the advancing speed (Robbins, 2000). In coalfields with shallow seams, the width of a fully mechanized face exceeds 300 m (Ju and Zhu, 2015; Fu, Song, and Xing, 2010); in coalfields with deep seams, the width of the face is usually greater than 240 m (Liu et al., 2016; Li et al., 2013). The term ‘super-long working face’ was proposed to describe working faces with a width of over 240 m (Zhao and Song, 2016; Xu et al, 2007) in China. To support these long working faces with rapid advancing speeds, high-powered mining equipment is required (Kulshreshtha and Parikh, 2001, 2002; Tu et al., 2009; Mishra, Sugla,and Singha, 2013). This is easily achieved in newly built mines, but is not a good choice for ageing mines because of the low return on a high investment on account of the limited remaining resources. It is therefore difficult for ageing mines to significantly increase their unit output with the existing mining equipment. This study focused on this problem: two shearers were applied to a longwall fully mechanized working face (LFMWF) to achieve increased unit output."

Investigations were conducted to determine the condition and stability of the existing decline at amine in the Kalahari Manganese Field, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. During the inspection of the decline, voids were identified behind the concrete lining on the hangingwall and sidewalls over a total linear distance of 230 m. The voids did not provide confinement and, as a result, self-mining was occurring behind the lining. Water was flowing into the decline, over a total linear distance of 100 m, at areas where the decline intersected incompetent rock units, causing softening of the concrete lining and deterioration of the surrounding rock mass. Further damage to the concrete lining was caused by expansion and contraction of the wet red clay unit. Remedial work comprised void filling and water sealing to prevent further deterioration of the decline and ensure that it remained operable for the remainder of the life of mine. Void filling was accomplished by drilling rows of holes along the decline to access the voids and filling the voids with foam. This was followed by the sealing with polymer fluids. Telescopic pipes were also installed to allow water to drain off. A visual inspection was conducted and check-holes were drilled to assess the quality of the remedial work. The void filling material had penetrated cracks in the concrete lining, and areas where voids were intersected by check-holes were re-filled. Additional holes were drilled to re-seal areas that were still wet. The remedial work was completed successfully, as all voids were filled and stability achieved without compromising the concrete lining. The ingress of groundwater was also reduced to some residual dampness.

South Africa is running out of fresh water and is looking at ways to improve water usage. This report addresses how a diamond mine in Gauteng has improved the utilization of its water resources. In the past, water from the local river was deemed the most suitable to use in the grease recovery plant but subsequent tests on the water from the slimes dam have shows that this water source is in fact more suitable for diamond recovery. Utilizing the slimes dam water provides a more stable water source than the local river while also reducing the impact of the mine on the water resources in the area.

Most copper/cobalt ores from the Central African Copperbelt contain sulphidic compounds, which are not extractable in direct leaching. Roasting provides the possibility to transfer the valuable components into leachable compounds. In an operation window defined by temperature and off-gas composition it is possible to selectively oxidize iron sulphides to haematite and copper/cobalt sulphides to sulphates. Selective sulphating of the valuable minerals is an important condition for the subsequent leaching stage. The dissolved copper and cobalt are recovered by solvent extraction and electrowinning. This technology has been part of an established process for many decades. The concentrates from recent projects on the Copperbelt have lower sulphur contents, and frequently higher copper contents, than those from older projects. The paper shows the consequences of this trend for plant operation and explains useful counter actions by means of case studies. Autothermal combustion is ensured even at very low sulphur contents. Off-gas treatment has so far been based on SO2 removal through sulphuric acid production. The generated acid is used to make up acid losses in the hydrometallurgical plant section. This well-proven process combination is still the preferred route if the feed sulphur content is high enough; however, some cases may require different off-gas cleaning concepts without compromising on clean air quality. Roasting in a fluid-bed furnace remains the core of the technology. Fluid-bed roasters are easy to operate and provide an excellent control of the calcine quality. Different feeding and heat-recovery systems are used to provide a tailor-made solution for each project. Outotec built it first sulphatizing roaster in Zambia about 30 years ago. At that time, the roasting of metal sulphides was already one of the main technologies in the company. Outotec has developed roasting solutions for copper, gold, zinc, lead, molybdenum, and pyrite ores. The continuously expanded and upgraded research facilities provide an excellent basis for developing sustainable, energy-efficient, and economic solutions for copper and cobalt production in Africa.

The attrition of activated carbon, and the loss of gold associated with it, is of significant economic importance to the operation of a CIP/CIL circuit The focus of this study was on activated carbon recovered from an elution circuit which was deemed too fine for reuse. Results of cyclosizer and laser particle size analysis identified that most of the carbon was contained in the larger size fraction suggesting formation by abrasion. Digestion and AAS analysis of the individual size fractions identified a disproportionate concentration of gold in the finer size fractions which was identified by scanning electron microscopy to be due to the presence of fine metallic gold formed as a result of the acid washing process. Attempts to strip the remaining gold using sodium hydroxide or sodium sulphide based solutions proved unsuccessful due to poor elution efficiencies and re adsorption of gold. Upgrading of the material by froth flotation was also investigated using various conventional flotation reagents which had some success in concentrating the free metallic gold, however, grade and/or recoveries were considered less than desirable. Greater success was ultimately found in the transfer of gold from the fine carbon material onto coarser virgin activated carbon using a caustic cyanide solution. Sodium sulphide, sodium chloride and ammonium chloride based solutions were also trialled but proved less successful owing to their inability to mobilise metallic gold or gold cyanide species. Repetition of the transfer process proved capable of stripping 97% of the gold contained on the carbon fines for abed volume ratio of 6:1.

A brief account is given of the influence of sulphuric acid and chloride ions during the recovery of uranium by solvent extraction, followed by a discussion of the settling behaviour of dispersions and models to represent that behaviour. The paper ends with a description of various methods for the recovery of solvent, which is lost in the solvent-extraction process by entrainment and adsorption on solids and by dissolution.

Lightning has been observed in dust clouds following open-pit blasting. It is proposed that the occurrence of this phenomenon is related to the physical composition and characterization of the mineral fines that comprise the bulk of the dust cloud. Silicate minerals, which are susceptible to fine fracturing during blasting, generate the initial charge. This is further enhanced by collisions and friction during the turbulent upcast in the post-blast dust cloud. Varying size fractions result in different rates at which these particles drop out of suspension and create a secondary temperature gradient. This results in the creation of two charged zones and increases the potential of developing a discharge in the form of lightning. The ideal prevailing meteorological conditions need to be windless to minimize the effect of particle dissipation and have sufficient moisture toenhance the potential of generating lightning.

Many mines engaged in deeplevel gold mining in South Africa are experimenting with the use of tailings fills, or are implementing tailings backfilling programmes on a limited scale. The approach varies from mine to mine, depending on circumstances and available fill materials. Several mines are backfilling with a cyclone underflow product; the cyclone overflow is then combined with the balance of the tailings stream and directed to surface disposal. As the extent of backfilling increases, the proportion of the surface tailings stream composed of overflow material will rise, and the properties of the tailings requiring surface disposal will approach those of the cyclone overflow. As the latter will be finer, less permeable and possibly weaker than the total tailings currently being disposed, the design and operation of surface tailings dams will have to be modified. Dams may have to be designed with flatter outer slopes of a reduced maximum height. Lower rates of rise may be required and, as a consequence, larger disposal areas may be demanded. To offset the negative aspects is the fact that the quantity of tailings requiring surface disposal will be reduced. The paper explores the dam-building properties of two cyclone overflow products. It shows that although these materials are inferior in dam-building characteristics to the corresponding total tailings, their geotechnical proper- ties still fall within, or close to, the range of properties typical of gold tailings. Although the design and operation of tailings dams may have to be modified, existing technology is adequate to handle these changes.

Uncertainties in the forecasting of the volume of groundwater likely to enter underground workings present difficulties for mine management in planning and costing the water-related activities of mining. This paper describes a technique that was developed to assess future inflows into a gold mine in the Orange Free State. The approach employed was based on the interactive operation of two separate computer models: a regional-flow model and an inflow model. As a first stage, a regional finite-element model of groundwater flow was set up and calibrated. Predictive runs were made to establish the influence of mining on the water levels from base-line conditions. This step was necessary since observations of the regional water levels were sparse. The predicted water levels were transferred to the inflow model, and the future flowrates were calculated. Both models were calibrated by trial and error until a satisfactory match was obtained between historical records and the values predicted by modeling. In this way, an improved monitoring system to record regional water levels and pressure heads within a mine was established. By the use of information, the initial model predictions can be refined as mining progresses. The models used are based on a non-linear relationship between the area mined and the inflows. A phased behaviour in the rates of inflow increase was noted. In conclusion, the modeling approach can provide mine management with guidelines for dewatering requirements. The confidence levels depend upon the records that have been collected during the mine's history.

ABSTRACT: The proposed paper is aimed at analysing the failure of a steep cliff slope that, in the past, was exploited for open pit mining operations. A volume of over 400,000m3 of gneissic aplitic rock was involved in the slope failure. An evaluation of possible failure mechanisms is given, based on a structural description of the rock mass, a mechanical characterisation and on computation methods. The block theory and limit equilibrium techniques for sliding and block toppling were applied and a comparison is given with the result obtained by using DEM models. RESUME: Le document proposé vise l’analyse des mécanismes de rupture d’une falaise qui a été intéressée dans le passé par une mine à ciel ouvert. Un volume supérieur à 400.000 m3 de aplite-gneiss a été concerné par la rupture de la falaise. Le document fournit une évaluation des possibles mécanismes de rupture, basée sur une description structurale de l’amas rocheu, une caractérisation mécanique et des méthodes de calcul numérique. L’analyse a été développée à l’aide de la théorie des blocs et de la technique de l’équilibre limite, soit pour le glissement que pour le basculement des blocs, et une comparaison avec le résultat obtenu par application des modèles DEM a été effectuée. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die vorgeschlagene Arbeit zielt darauf ab, den Einsturz einer steilen Felswand zu analysieren, an der in der Vergangenheit eine Mine im Übertageabbau betrieben wurde. Der Einsturz betraf ein Volumen von über 400000 m3 an Gneis und Aplit. In der Arbeit ist eine Einschätzung des möglichen Mechanismus angegeben, der zum Bruch geführt hat, und sie basiert auf einer strukturellen Beschreibung der Felsmasse, einer mechanischen Charakterisierung sowie auf der Anwendung von Berechnungsmethoden. Angewandt wurden die Blocktheorie und die Methode der Gleichgewichtsgrenze für das Abrutschen und Kippen von Blöcken. Darüber hinaus wird ein Vergleich mit den Ergebnissen angestellt, die unter Verwendung von DEM-Modellen erzielt wurden.
