INTRODUCTION Acclimatization of the labour force to heat is an integral aspect of gold mining in South Africa. A recent survey revealed that about 250,000 Bantu mine workers require to be acclimatized to heat each year. Until 1965 men were acclimatized by means of one of the Chamber of Mines methods (introduced by the Human Sciences Laboratory in 1953). This type of acclimatization was carried out underground where men shovelled rock in hot stopes under careful supervision. However, it has become increasingly difficult in the last few years for mines to provide underground the conditions of work and environmental heat required for adequate acclimatization to heat. In examining an alternative to acclimatization in underground hot stopes, the Human Sciences Laboratory carried out a trial in 1965 of acclimatization in an air-conditioned climatic room on the surface of a mine. The new procedures developed from this trial have been so successful that there are today 26 climatic rooms on different mines. These rooms have been built following a design proposed by Mr Hodgson of the National Mechanical Engineering Research Institute1. Approximately 85 per cent of the total number of men being acclimatized each year are put through the new procedures in these climatic rooms. This paper gives an account of the problems which arose and how they were solved, the inter-relationship between physical conditioning and climatic room acclimatization, the prodecures developed for elimination of labourers with low maximum oxygen intakes, and the advantages of climatic room acclimatization. CLIMATIC ROOMS The majority of the climatic rooms (twenty) have been built on the surface, but a number (six) of mines preferred to establish their acclimatization centres underground in order to decrease the initial costs involved in the construction of such facilities. These underground climatic rooms are usually located near shaft stations in redundant haulages and they can accommodate from 200 to 400 labourers, thus eliminating the need for multiple acclimatization shifts. Figs. 1-4 illustrate various aspects of a surface climatic room. PROBLEMS WHICH AROSE IN INTRODUCING CLIMATIC ROOM ACCLIMATISATION There were four main problems which arose in connection with the introduction of the new method. These were: (i) The type and rate of work to be used. (ii) The air conditions required to obtain optimum acclimatization. (iii) The duration of exposure to heat each day and the total number of days of acclimatization. (iv) The methods of cooling labourers with high body temperatures. Shovelling rock would have been the desirable type of physical work to employ, but the air-conditioned space required to accommodate large numbers of men and the difficulty in standardizing the work rate in shovelling led to the decision to employ instead the work procedure used by the Human Sciences Laboratory in acclimatizing men in the Laboratory. This is the lifting of the body weight against gravity when men step on and off a bench. It has the advantage that large numbers of men can work physically at the required rate in a relatively small space (120 men can be accommodated in an area of 70 ft by 21 ft) and the cost of construction and ventilation of the climatic rooms is thereby reduced. Also the work rate can be standardized by varying the height of the stepping benches in relation to the individuals' body weights. The next problem was the air condition to be used in the climatic rooms. The Laboratory's research experience in acclimatization led it to choose an air temperature of 89°F (with the air almost saturated with water vapour) and an average velocity of air movement of 100 fpm. This air condition was combined with a work rate of 1,560 ft lb/min (oxygen consumption 1.0 litre/min) on day 1, and the work rate was increased gradually over the period of acclimatization to reach a work rate of 3,120 ft lb/min (oxygen consumption 1.6 litres/min) on day 9.

The intention is to solve a series of problems in the flotation and desiliconisation of complex bauxite; aiming to achieve monomer dissociation of target minerals based on process mineralogy. According to the mineral surface, there are differences in physical and chemical properties and the molecular design theory of flotation agents. Designing the polar and non-polar groups of the bauxite flotation collector to make the reagent group easily combine with the mineral to form a cyclic chelate, will enhance the collection performance, and strengthen the drug selection performance. Developing a new type of positive flotation collector for bauxite with small dosage, strong selectivity and low foam volume. Material handling in surface mines accounts for around 50% of the operational cost. Optimum truck dispatching plays a critical role in the reduction of this operational cost in truck and shovel surface mines. Researchers in this field have presented several mathematical models to solve the truck dispatching problem optimally. However, a critical survey of the literature has shown that three significant drawbacks exist in the available truck dispatching models. The published models underestimate the importance of the interaction between truck fleet, shovel fleet, and the processing plants. They also disregard goals set by strategic-level plans. Moreover, none of the available models account for the uncertainty associated with the input parameters. In this paper we present a new truck dispatching model that covers all of these drawbacks, using a fuzzy linear programming method. The performance of the developed model was evaluated through implementatin in an active surface mining operation. The results show a significant improvement in production and fleet utilization.

A computational model of a submerged arc furnace (SAF) used in the production of ferrochrome is presented. The model‘s intended use is to investigate the extent to which intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the raw materials affect burden distribution and electrical resistance within the furnace. The model is built on the discrete element method and calculates the mechanical interactions of particle distributions resulting from the flow motion of typical raw materials used in the smelting of chromium ore. This model excludes the effects of thermodynamics, furnace chemistry, and heat transfer. It illustrates how the consumption of materials (chromite pellets, flux, and reductant) is affected by changes in electrode length, reductant fractions, and reductant sizing and density during the formation of a reductant bed. The resistance calculation algorithm developed by Mintek was applied to construct networks developed from particle contacts, which can quantitatively generate estimates of the electrode-to-electrode and electrode-to-bath electrical conduction conditions.

Froth flotation is well-established and efficient in the selective separation of valuable particles from unwanted material with sizes ranging from 10 μm to 200 μm. However, when it comes to the separation of ultrafine particles (< 10 μm) there are still some challenges, or rather opportunities. This research aims at developing a method for the separation of ultrafine particles based on multiple particle properties. Amongst such properties are wettability, morphology (shape or roughness) and size with applications not only in mineral processing but in general chemical engineering. In this study, three differently shaped fractions are used as valuables for testing: spherical particles, elongated particles and irregularly shaped particle fragments; together with ultrafine magnetite as the gangue material, in order to investigate the effect of particle morphology on ultrafine particle flotation, as well as wettability, which is varied by esterification using alcohols. Flotation tests are carried out using a novel flotation device that was designed especially for the flotation of ultrafine particles, combining advantages from machine-type froth flotation and column flotation. The results showed that, in contrast to previous studies, recoveries for ultrafine spheres were higher than for ultrafine fragments for all wettability conditions, and hydrophobisation generally increased particle recoveries for said morphologies. Tests using fibres showed different behaviour as hydrophobisation had negative effects on their recovery, despite increased selectivities and kinetics. These findings suggest that apart from influences of particle properties within the suspension zone, their effects on the froth characteristics should be studied in more depth. This study investigates the effect of ammonium thiosulfate on the leaching of gold from the contacts of unpopulated cut electronic printed circuit boards (PCBs). Studies in the literature show ammonium thiosulfate to be a viable option in comparison to the commonly used but hazardous cyanide leaching route. However, the simultaneous dissolution of Cu interferes with the Au leaching reaction, often limiting the extraction to moderate levels. To optimize the system, an ammoniumthiosulfate system containing 0.5M ammonia, 0.5M ammonium thiosulfate, and Cu(II) sulfate at varying concentrations was studied as an alternative hydrometallurgical option for the recovery of gold from PCB. Tests were done with unpopulated standardized model PCBs (cut to 15 x 30mm pieces). Gold extraction of 47.3% was achieved after a 24-hour leaching experiment with a 0.02M copper background concentration. Further experiments focused using different initial background Cu concentrations (0M – 0.1M) to determine its effect on both gold and copper extractions. An initial Cu concentration of 0.045M resulted in the highest gold extraction, with 93.7% extraction after 6 hours of leaching. Further analysis of the data shows that the kinetic rate of gold leaching is correlated in a first-order dependence with the actual copper concentration in the solution, which increases with the concomitant dissolution of copper and gold from the PCBs. A lower threshold of 0.017M and an upper threshold of 0.15M copper in solution were determined, in between which gold extraction shows this first-order rate increase. The upper threshold is potentially linked to the onset of copper precipitation, which blinds the metal surfaces, slowing further leaching. The findings of this study suggest that in an industrial recovery operation of gold from waste PCB using the thiosulfate method, copper concentrations need to be carefully monitored, and the process should preferably operate with uncut or coarsely cut untreated boards to minimize exposure to copper circuits.

Bushveld Belco is commissioning a plant for production of electrolyte used in vanadium redox flow batteries. Owing to the source material, the electrolyte is contaminated with Fe, at concentrations up to 140 mg/L, which negatively affects battery performance. This study examined the use of ion exchange to reduce the Fe concentration to the target value of < 100 mg/L from a feed solution containing 100 g/L V in 4 M H2SO4. Four resins with possible application were identified: Puromet MTS9570, Puromet MTX7010, Puromet MTS9500, and Puromet MTC1600H. Puromet MTS9570 outperformed the other three resins in all batch experiments with respect to loading capacity and selectivity over V, and was evaluated for Fe removal in fixed-bed column loading tests. Based on these data, preliminary sizing and design of a full-scale column was undertaken. Owing to the difficulty of eluting this resin, a philosophy of discarding the resin on loading to full capacity was considered. These data revealed that, despite the high selectivity of this resin for Fe over V, it would be too expensive and impractical to use this resin for full-scale operation under such conditions. It is recommended to remove iron earlier in the flowsheet prior to generation of the 4 M H2SO4 electrolyte.

An evaluation was made of the wear and performance characteristics of liter bars, and the cost-life effectiveness of backing materials for rotary-mil liners. In a large run-of-mine mil in which the liter bars were mounted on grid liners of austenitic manganese steel (AMS), the liners had an average life that was five to six times that of equivalent unprotected liners. For a single mil, this is equivalent to annual savings in the cost of materials of up to R320 000, and to a downtime of 100 hours. Of the five materials tested in a large pebble mil grinding quartzitic ore, AMS grids and &apos;white iron&apos; blocks performed best on a cost-life basis, with possibly improved performance from a real white cast iron. (The &apos;white iron&apos; was shown by microstructural analysis to contain flake raphite and pearlite, being in reality a grey cast iron.) The high-chromium white iron had by far the longest predicted life, with mild steel a surprising second. Rubber was shown to last well in this type of mil. The wear rates of liners change during their lifetimes. The protective effect of liter bars was clearly illustrated by the reduction of over 40 per cent in the wear rates of the liners when the lifter bars were renewed to a height of 80 mm from a fully worn height of 35 mm.

Strict implementation of International Standards for representative sampling of coal is difficult for routine monitoring, due to time, technical, and economic constraints. A large percentage of the total sampling variance arises from errors accumulated during the earliest stages of sample collection. Modified procedures on the precision of the final result leads to controversies between the sellers and customers for coal. Manual collection of coal samples violates the principle of correct sampling, that all fragments must have an equiprobable chance of being in the sample. In addition, manual size reduction of large numbers of samples is time consuming and involves human errors. A coal quality management procedure in alignment with the relevant ISO standards that describes the sampling protocol has been implemented, and current sampling and laboratory analysis of coal from base load mines (mines situated at the mouth of the power station) are well established. For import coal, sampling is performed during unloading by auto-mechanical sampling (AMS). Due to logistical and safety issues associated with multiple suppliers, Eskom opted for the coal to be sampled at source on a pre-certification basis. Online analysers provide a fast, accurate, real-time method of determining the total moisture and elemental composition of coal and is important to the coal industry for pricing, quality control, and reduction of SO2 emissions. Elemental analyses include S, Si, Al, Fe, Ca, Na, Mg, Mn, Ti, K and Cl. Measurement of S is dictated by the control of SO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. Elements such as Na and Cl have adverse effects on boilers, causing fouling and slagging. Available online elemental analyser technologies include prompt gamma neutron activation analyses (PGNAA), recommended for major element determination, and pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis(PFTNA), that is capable of measuring the major and minor chemical elements contained in coal. These systems utilize nuclear reactions to produce characteristic gamma rays that are used for identifying various chemical elements. By acquiring the gamma rays in three different time windows, there is a significant reduction of the background as compared with the spectra taken with a radio isotopic source.

Productivity is improved by increasing the ratio of output to input. In an operating open-pit mine, improving the productivity of heavy mining equipment (HME) enables the unit cost of production to be reduced. To optimize HME productivity, the Kolomela open-pit iron ore mine transitioned to an enhanced short-term mine planning (STMP) process that supports the application of a manufacturing-type operating model. At the core of the enhanced STMP process is a focus on integration across the open-pit mining value chain. The interdependencies between mining activities are highlighted and emphasized, thus ensuring that mining activities are synchronized. The improvements related to HME productivity were monitored from 2019 to 2020. The utilization of mining area in the Leeuwfontein pit improved from 71% to 90%, and the blasting frequency reduced by 14% while the average blast size increased by 17%. The distance travelled during shovel relocations between mining phases reduced by 16%, and the lost time associated with drills relocating reduced by 53%. These productivity improvements resulted in an 11% increase in the loading rate of the main waste shovel at Kolomela from 0.9 Mt/month in 2019 to 1.0 Mt/month in 2020. The enhanced STMP process can be adapted to other open-pit mining operations.

The paper reviews the tapping process and the major wear mechanisms on the tap-hole, including wear from tapping tools. Measured temperatures in different tap-holes are related to choice of binder and material for repair pastes. The strength and disadvantage of carbon and silicon carbide materials are compared. Normal daily and weekly maintenance of tapholes is described, together with the major repairs that are done during longer furnace shutdowns. The objective is to show that the type of repair and repair material needs to be adapted to each individual furnace.

"This work was carried out to determine the influence of rock properties and drilling machine parameters on the penetration rate at the SJ pit of Rössing Uranium Mine, Namibia. Rock properties (uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity) of samples collected were determined in the laboratory. Drilling experiments were conducted in which feed pressure, air pressure, rotary speed, weight on the bit, and torque were varied to measure their effect on the penetration rate. The uniaxial compressive strength varied from 90–180 MPa for layered marble-quartzite and banded gneiss. Increases in feed pressure, weight on the bit, and rotary speed beyond the optimum level led to a decrease in penetration rate and caused the drill bit to ‘stall’. Results of the study revealed that penetration rate increases with an increase in the feed pressure and air pressure. After reaching a maximum value, the penetration rate begins to decrease despite increasing feed pressure. A very high torque causes the drill bit to stall, since the feed pressure is too high and the air pressure is not sufficient to remove the cuttings from blast-hole at maxium bailing velocities. The average penetration rate varied from 19 to 45 m/h for phase 2 of the pit, and from 17 to 68 m/h for phase 3. The optimum drilling machine parameters obtained in phase 2 and phase 3 were slightly lower than those currently being used at the mine. The trials of the optimum machine parameters will assist in reducing the cost of drilling, which varied from N$29.48 to N$36.31 per metre for the tricone bit. IntroductionDrilling and blasting contribute most to the operational cost in opencast mining and have the potential to influence the cost of downstream operations (Aipanda, 2011). The drillability of rocks depends not only on the rock properties, but also on the drilling tools and operational variables. In rotary drilling, rotational speed, thrust, and flushing are the operational variables, and are known as the controllable parameters. Rock properties and geological conditions are the uncontrollable parameters. Although, many attempts have been made to correlate drillability with rock properties, the rock characteristics affecting rotary drilling have not been entirely defined (Hartman, 1962; Kahraman, Bilgin, and Feridunoglu, 2003). Hydrogen peroxide is often used as an oxidising agent in experimental waste electronic equipment (WEE) leaching work. However, the high cost of peroxide is a negative factor in its consideration in further process development. A few studies have reported on the efficient application of peroxide addition schedules to ensure optimum reagent consumption. Large quantities of unleached substrate material contained in WEE feed material result in a large dead volume of material in the leaching reactor. This factor necessitates fast reaction rates to enable the use of a high feed material throughput reactor to enhance overall project viability via hydrometallurgical processing. In this study the effects of hydrogen peroxide addition schedules on base metal leaching efficiency and solution temperatures were tested at laboratory scale. The results showed that overall peroxide consumption can be optimised to lower levels by matching peroxide additions to the particular feed material’s leaching behaviour. A simplified integrated model for peroxide decomposition is used to explain its effect on solution temperatures and leaching rates. Fiber-Optic Sensing and UAV-Platform Techniques for Innovative Mineral Exploration (FUTURE) is a joint European Union and South African consortium project funded under ERA-NET Cofund ERA-MIN3. The project aims to develop cost-effective and novel seismic methods to image geological structures ahead of the mine face, ultimately leading to improved decision-making and safer mining practices. In this study we present results from numerical simulations conducted at South Deep Gold Mine for active in-mine seismic surveys. The study uses a finite differencing code known as WAVE3D, which models models the propagation of a seismic wave generated by stress pertubations that are applied to a defined grid. The numerical simulation model included two major ore bodies (Black Reef and Ventersdorp Contact Reef) and mine tunnels. The model was constrained using laboratory physical property measurements from underground borehole samples such as seismic velocities (e.g., compressional and shear waves) and bulk densities. Two case studies were created, one modelled the active shots and receivers on surface, and the other modelled the shots at depth (in a mine tunnel at ~4000 m depth) with receivers on surface. In both cases, the objective was to investigate the wavefield propagation through the rockmass between the mine tunnel and surface. The simulated wavefield produced by the source located along the mine tunnel was successfully recorded on surface. The surface-recorded wavefield exhibits clear one-way P-wave arrival times at approximately 450 ms to 500 ms, which can be used to calculate the surface-tunnel P-wave refraction tomogram. The results from the study were used to constrain the design, and for the acquisition and processing of the real surface and in-mine seismic surveys acquired under the FUTURE project.

Recovery of fine pentlandite is proving to be a challenging task in the Kevitsa sequential flotation operations, with over 60% of the nickel losses reporting into the -25μm size fraction. Since commissioning, the Kevitsa process has undergone major changes to address throughput and flotation performance. Major changes were implemented in the configuration of the milling and flotation circuits as well as in the operating conditions and reagent regime. Some of these changes improved nickel flotation while others deteriorated flotation performance. Most of the changes have had a direct impact on nickel flotation. This paper reviews the systematic analysis, laboratory testing and salient changes done to the process with special focus on the impact on the fine pentlandite flotation. International Solvent Extraction Conference 1971 ISEC &apos;71, which will be held in The Hague, The Netherlands, from 18th to 23rd April, 1971, is being sponsored by the Society of Chemical Industry in association with the Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs, the Institution of Chemical Engineers and the Koninklijke Nederlandse Chemische Vereniging. The Working Party on Distillation, Absorption and Extraction of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering is participating in the Conference, which is the 101st event of the Federation. The scope of the Conference covers the entire science and technology of liquid-liquid extraction as applied in all branches of industry. Thus sessions will cover both chemical and chemical engineering aspects of the subject as applied to both inorganic and organic solutes. The conference aims to bring together academic and industrial workers in the field from all parts of the world. The programme includes over 100 papers by authors in 26 countries. Full details of the papers, together with registration forms, are contained in a detailed programme, copies of which are now available from: ISEC &apos;71, 14 Belgrave Square, London, S.W.1, U.K. Department of Mining and Mineral Technology of the Royal School of Mines Postgraduate Courses Technical and economic challenges facing the minerals industry, together with progressive change in methods and equipment, increasingly necessitate re-training of experienced professional engineers who aim for top places. In order to meet this need, this Department has for some years run one year M.Sc. courses. Engineers, often sponsored by their employers, have a choice of three courses which are respectively devoted to mining, applied rock mechanics or mineral process design. The course in Mining is divided into five subjects, which are treated from the business management point of view. It is intended to provide middle management with a knowledge of those techniques that are required by the mining engineering function in the preparation of modern projects. The course in Mineral Process Design provides a systematic use of mineral sciences, engineering and economics for ore testing and process design, so as best to balance the technical and financial requirements for specific mineral resources. The course in Engineering Rock Mechanics is designed to provide a specialized training in the engineering applications of rock mechanics for engineers and geologists, so that they are equipped to treat a wide variety of problems in mining and civil engineering. Prerequisite qualifications are a good first degree in a related subject, plus industrial experience: The rewards include an M.Sc. of the University of London and the Diploma of the Imperial College (DIC). Eutectic freeze crystallisation is a novel separation technique that can be applied to treat brine solutions such as reverse osmosis retentates, which are often a mixture of different inorganic salts. The treatment of calcium sulphate-rich brine solutions through eutectic freeze crystallisation has resulted in gypsum scale formation on the walls of the crystallisers and ancillary equipment. In order to prevent gypsum scaling on equipment surfaces, it is essential to understand the mechanism of gypsum scaling on cold surfaces. This paper focused on the interaction between gypsum crystallisation in the bulk solution and scaling on the crystalliser walls in the presence of gypsum seeds. A cooled, U-shaped stainless-steel tube suspended in the saturated solution was employed as the scaling surface. Preliminary results showed that the scale layer was predominantly composed of needle-type and hexagonal prismatic crystals. The rate of scale deposition was highest during the first 24 hours, thereafter it decreased. A thin scale layer was observed to have coated the tube within the first hour of the experiment. Seeding, using reagent grade gypsum crystals, was effective in reducing scale layer formation through providing a surface for growth. The highest scale reduction, 81%, was realised at a seed loading of 0.50 g/L. At a high seed loading of 4.01 g/L, the seed material adhered to the tube.
