A mine fire model gallery has been designed and constructed on the premises of the Central Mining Research Institute, Dhanbad, India to perform systematic in-depth studies on various aspects of mine fires. The gallery is 65.5 m long and 5.86 m2in cross-section and it is divided into firing and non-firing zones. It is equipped with a computer-aided online telemonitoring system that has 130 sensors, two data loggers and computer peripherals for continuous recording of various fire parameters. A fan to generate airflow through the gallery has been installed at its end. Two sliding doors and one rolling shutter were also provided for sealing and regulation of airflow. Two sets of experiments have been carried out in the model gallery maintaining air velocity of 1 and 1.5 m/s through it. In the experiments, the inner sides of the firing zone, 22 m in length, were lined with a thin layer (8?10 cm thick) of coal slabs. Two fire suppression techniques viz. flushing of liquid nitrogen (LN2) and infusion of high pressure high stability (HPHS) nitrogen foam were tried to quantify their effectiveness under dynamic fire conditions. The paper addresses important design features of the gallery, its instrumentation system, the experimental procedure adopted and important findings from the experiments. It has been observed that the intensity of the fire was very high after one hour of its initiation and continued for 3?4 hours. During the period, frequent backlash with smoke and flame was noticed. The efficacy of the fire suppression techniques has been assessed interms of reduction in temperature, generation rate of CO2and CO, and heat release rate. The study reveals that high pressure high stability (HPHS) nitrogen foam is more effective in controlling open fires than liquid nitrogen is. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng. (Mining Eng.) Cullinan Diamond Mine currently handles 3.2 million tons of run of ore per annum. This is done by means of an underground train system, which is located at 763 metre level. Four trains, one in each quarter of the pipe, collect ore from passes and transport it to centrally located tips in the north and south of the pipe. The ore is then split into coarse and fine fractions. The coarse fraction proceeds to the primary crushers in the north and south. Historically, mining has been performed in such a manner that an equal amount of ore has reported to each quarter of the pipe. However, the tonnage profile of the mine will change such that the ore will no longer be split equally. For approximately five years the majority of ore will report to the east and thereafter most of the ore will report to the western portion of the mine. This will continue for the remainder of the current infrastructure level?s operational life. Coupled with this is the fact that the mine is aiming to increase its annual production to 3.8 million tons. The result is that the current ground handling system cannot accommodate the additional tons and therefore alternative ground handling options have been investigated. The continued existence of Cullinan Diamond Mine relies on finding a system that can economically handle the additional tonnage. Three options were investigated. Firstly, a train option, which would be an upgrade of the current system, was investigated. Two truck options were also investigated, the first of which was a conventional truck option. The second truck option was more interesting and involved an unfamiliar Combi truck system. The truck options were investigated primarily due to the fact that the block height of the BA West (a new production block) can be increased by 15 meters if a truck option is decided upon. This would create a significant increase in revenue for the BA West project. Each of the options was assessed in terms of its physical and financial feasibility. In terms of the physical constraints, it was found that all three systems could work. Detailed financial analysis indicated that either of the two truck options would be a suitable solution. However, due to the limited information regarding the Combi truck option, it should be further investigated. This applies particularly to the actual running and maintenance costs for the equipment.

Theoretically, the main driver behind a mining operations? sourcing decision should differ from company to company, and within a company from project to project, but in reality it often relates to cost. Research confirms that there are a number of factors, including cost, to consider when choosing between in-house and outsourced mining. While the literature is rife with factors to consider, little information exists on how to apply these in practice and the relative importance of the different factors to be considered. A study was conducted to determine whether mining is truly a core competency for a mid-tier commodity specialist mining company. Furthermore, a decision-making framework for mining operations sourcing was developed, and the critical success factors that should be adhered to if outsourced mining is chosen were determined. The research showed that owner mining is not a core competency for the mining company investigated. A decision-making framework was developed using the order winner/order qualifier structure, which can be used to facilitate the mining sourcing decision. The most important tools at the disposal of a mine owner?s team to manage a contractor miner are the social and output control mechanisms, according to the critical success factors study.

"A study of five commercially available solvent-extraction diluents in combination with three commercially available extractants under sub-Saharan African copper solvent-extraction conditions yielded intriguing results. A variety of physical and chemical property analyses showed that the diluents have some property differences, but overall the properties are similar and provide comparable solvent-extraction performance. Although each physical chemical property technique provides useful information, no individual test result suffices for prediction of diluent performance. Furthermore, a diluent should be evaluated within the conditions for which it is targeted to determine a true measure of performance. Overall, the diluents studied possess appropriate physicochemical properties for sub-Sahara Africa copper solvent-extraction conditions and can be utilized to achieve efficient, safe and reliable operations. INTRODUCTION Background Today, commercial SX diluents are available globally from a limited number of manufacturers. Production quality and consistency of these diluents have improved tremendously over the past 20 years. For example, diluent flash points have been increased incrementally to improve transport and handling while reducing fire hazards. In addition, properties have been successfully modified to minimize evaporative losses, ultimately reducing SX plant raw material costs. Diluent manufacturers have also focused on meeting performance requirements of SX plants, including eliminating components detrimental to SX operations, such as olefinic groups that can react with various species resulting in changing phase-disengagement properties over time, as well as ensuring that proper hydrocarbon components are present within diluent mixtures to maintain good reagent–metal complex solubility. These challenges have been met in the midst of ever-increasing stringent environmental regulations. Sub-Saharan Africa copper SX operations pose a unique set of conditions for diluents due to inherent ore compositions and the associated high reagent concentrations required for complete copper extraction. Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, LP has been manufacturing hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-based diluents since the mid-80s, applying this experience to identify the physical properties considered crucial for proper performance in SX operations. This paper documents the findings of a study utilizing commercially available diluents in combination with extraction reagents commonly utilized in African SX operations to evaluate the relative performance of the diluents under sub-Saharan Africa copper SX conditions."

It has been noted in recent years that the pillars in some bord-and-pillar workings scale or spall. In due course this process may result in the collapse of the affected panels. This paper presents a methodology for assessing the long-term behaviour of such workings, employing a simple model of pillar deterioration by scaling. It is assumed that scaling causes a gradual reduction in pillar width, hence the safety factor of pillars reduces in time. It is also postulated that the process of scaling will be arrested if the coal rubble around the pillar reaches a critical height. The probability that the pillars will survive for a certain period of time, or indefinitely, can be estimated. This can be accomplished by using the log-normal distribution proposed by Salamon and Munro4todescribe the distribution of the apparent safety factor values at failure. If an estimate of the rate of scaling is known, it is also possible to quantify, using a Monte Carlo technique, the expected life of the pillars. The method also facilitates pillar design by specifying a probability of survival for a given number of years or, alternatively, for an indefinite period. Using the limited pool of available data, analyses show that the proposed model does not appear to be inconsistent with observed behaviour of pillars in the Vaal Basin. The crucial parameter is the rate of scaling. Back calculations from eleven cases suggest that the rate of spalling in the Vaal Basin is about 0.2 m/year. It is noteworthy that two further cases in the same area give significantly higher rates (0.85 m/year). Some underground observations in the Witbank area indicate considerably lower rates in the order of 0.02?0.04 m/year. Further areas for study are recommended. These include a study of old workings to determine the extent and rate of scaling in the various coal fields, an investigation into the possible relationship between scaling and the chemical composition of the coal. In addition, model studies will be required to assess the practical impact of the research findings.

A number of impending and actual pit wall failures have been observed and documented which have been interpreted to initiate on newly generated structural features. This infers failure through intact rock. Failure mechanisms have been postulated resulting from circumferential stress, extensional strain and brittle flexure. These will be discussed in the context of the failures and the associated monitoring. The implications of failure initiating on ?unknown? features has a significant impact for deep open pit mines where designs are based on the expected structural regime. Being able to anticipate such failures is important for design. Equally important is management of such changes as they arise. In this context, monitoring using high resolution microseismic techniques will be discussed as a means of providing early warning of such failures.

Bwana Mkubwa is a 50 000 tons per annum copper cathode producer, owned by First Quantum Minerals and located in Ndola, on the Zambian Copperbelt. The Bwana Mkubwa solvent-extraction circuit was started up in 1997. In 2002, the plant began treating ore from First Quantum?s Lonshi mine located in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Lonshi ore is exceptionally fine and the amount of solids in the feed solution reporting to the solvent-extraction feed solution increased dramatically. Initially, crud was filtered in a filter press, but this rapidly blinded and seldom produced anything better than a wet sludge containing large quantities of organic. In December 2003 the decision was made to install a Flottweg Z4E-3/441 Tricanter® centrifuge to recover organic from the crud. The installation was completed in June 2004 and has since led to significant improvements in plant operability and savings in organic consumption.

Research into the safe and economic extraction of underground coal pillars in the Witbank and Highveld coalfields of South Africa highlighted that future practices will have to consider pertinent risks associated with this least safe of all underground coal mining methods conducted in South Africa. To this end, a computer-based program called A-PEP (Analysis for Pillar Extraction Potential) was developed to assess three aspects of this mining practice, viz. risks associated with the physical attributes, operational risk attributes and economic attributes. This intelligent tool can thus be used when planning to conduct underground pillar extraction to ensure that all pertinent risk elements and legislative requirements are considered to conduct this mining method safely before a submission is made to the Department of Minerals and Energy. "This paper provides guidelines on performing mass and energy balance modelling involving coal and coal derivatives. Usually, the inputs to a pyrometallurgical process would be specified in terms of elements and compounds. Reliable thermochemical data is more widely available for species involving uniquely defined, relatively smaller molecules. However, in the case of coal, the molecules are extremely large and not uniquely defined. Consequently, modelling processes involving coal and its derivatives involve several potential pitfalls. These are outlined in the present paper.It was found that coal proximate analysis should not be regarded as absolute; it could vary with several parameters, including heating rate. For modelling, the use of ultimate analyses should be considered a preferable option to proximate analyses, where ‘fixed carbon’ and ‘volatiles’ are not defined in terms of chemical composition. Significant errors could be incurred if the larger molecules are neglected during calculation of the calorific value (CV) of coal gas (the gas liberated when coal is heated in the absence of oxygen).For elemental analysis determination, the oxygen content (which is calculated by balance) should be checked to ensure it is within the expected range. For representation of sulphur in coal, one should avoid doublecounting due to SO3 in the ash analysis.Potentially, oxygen in coal could be represented as O2, H2O, CO, or CO2.However, use of some of these species without considering the experimentally determined gross CV leads to significant errors in the energy balance. If coal enthalpy is calculated from elemental analyses without correction, representation of coal oxygen as H2O(l) gives reasonable accuracy. Coal volatiles could be represented by a complex mixture of compounds, even using different oxygen-containing species than these four, provided the enthalpy is corrected.It is recommended that an ‘enthalpy correction value’ be incorporated in energy balances involving combustion, devolatilization, or conversion of coal and coal derivatives, e.g. coke, char, or tar. That would imply that proximate analysis, elemental analysis, as well as the gross CV would be required for all solid or liquid coal-derived substances being modelled. No other correction due to carbon being present in a form other than graphite should be used, as that would imply double-counting some effects."

Ferroalloy production is an energy-intensive industrial sector with significant CO2 emissions. In this paper the current situation in ferroalloy processes is discussed from the standpoint of global environmental issues, trends and development. Progress and data of ferroalloys production are frequently compared with the steel industry, which is a closely related sector and the main user of ferroalloys. Emission factors of processes and electricity production are examined as well as possibilities and future scenarios of how to diminish CO2 emissions. As a part of this study a questionnaire was submitted to experts in the field of ferroalloys worldwide to survey opinions on the ferroalloy industry today and in the near future (2020). Eighteen questions concerning raw materials, energy, environmental aspects, by-products and economic aspects were responded to by seventeen experts, the answers were analysed and conclusions were drawn. On the ‘Majdan III’ open pit mine, supplying with brick clays the production plants of the industry of building material ‘Potisje-Kanjiza’ from Kanjiza, a modern ECS (excavator-conveyor-spreader) complex was built, integrating four bucket excavators, six conveyors and one spreader into a whole. This complex connects the mineral-exploitation unit with the final brick-products plant of the company. Monitoring and management of the ECS complex is carried out by modern computer-supported information-management system (IMS) implementing most modern measuring-regulation, computer and GPS equipment. It was concluded that, for safety reasons, the functions of the IMS should be developed by a component of active visual monitoring of the ECS complex. For this purpose, the task of making a project on intelligent system for visual monitoring of the ECS complex was entrusted to the Department of Computer Application at the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper gives a review of basic project solutions. The flotation response of a Pb-Zn sulphide ore from the Rosh Pinah Mine (Namibia) was studied in the presence of inorganic depressants such as sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate. Poor flotation selective was observed in the rougher concentrate of the galena circuit despite the use of excessive amount of sodium cyanide. Batch flotation tests have shown that the use of cyanide alone is not efficient for the depression of sphalerite from the Rosh Pinah ore when milling is carried out according to the current plant particle size distribution. The use of both cyanide and zinc sulphate improved the selectivity between galena and sphalerite much better than cyanide alone. Flotation selectivity is limited by the mineralogical texture of the Rosh Pinah ore sample. Microscopic analysis has shown that the presence of sphalerite in the galena concentrate is also due to poor liberation between galena and sphalerite, especially in the middlings. Hence selectivity could be improved by regrinding the rougher concentrate prior to the cleaning stage. Keywords- Sulphide ores, Flotation, Flotation depressant, Mineralogy.

This paper gives an account of the development of a technique whereby the vertical limits of geological horizons may be identified by the use of vertical variograms on the mineral of economic interest. This information may supplement or guide the correct subdivision of the individual horizons into meaning full data sets by diligent geological observation. This process then improves the quality of the variance modelling of the gold distribution in the plane of the individual layers and therefore enables better estimates to be made into the grids or blocks of the mine model. The technique is explained by an account of the development work, which was performed, on duplicate superimposed reef horizons in the Kimberley formations. The paper then shows how the correct approach was developed to evaluate the mineralized layers in a multiple stacked conglomerate layer sequence in the Elsburg reefs of the Witwatersrand Rand System at the Target deposit. The method of categorization of resources according to confidence in the estimate is also explained. The feasibility processes carried out on the three-dimensional model, in accordance with the SAMREC code are also described. An example of the development of a reconciliation process utilizing chip sampling is also explained.

This model was optimized using the linear programming concept whereby the best solution was perturbed by the stochastic behaviuor of one of the main parameters involved in the production process. The analysis of the results obtained permitted an evaluation of the risk associated with the best solution due to the uncertainty in the input parameters.

The exhaust system is a complex assembly of various components performing important tasks in harsh environments. Carbon steels have been used extensively in exhaust systems, but pressure for lower cost, increased fuel efficiency; lower hazardous emissions, weight savings and increased life expectancy have shifted the emphasis to stainless steels. In response to the growing consumption of stainless steels in automotive exhaust systems, the need to properly evaluate their corrosion resistance properties in order to ensure their appropriate use, has increased substantially. This paper evaluated the most common corrosion and oxidation tests developed that are used and applied it to four common stainless steels often employed in hot end exhaust components. In a summary considering the weight loss of an alloy, it general corrosion rate and pitting resistance under all the test conditions for hot end exhaust components, results indicate that 434 was by far the most corrosion resistant alloy, followed by 1.4509 and 321, and lastly 304 was the least corrosion resistant. In general, the ferritic stainless steels, especially 434, outperformed the austenitic ones under all the test conditions.

The purpose of this paper is to establish a qualitative method to estimate the risk level (e.g. rating and ranking) resulting from mining activity. Risk is the product of two factors: probability of failure and cost of consequences. A resultant assessment scale matrix is then used to assign a risk index value which is directly proportional to the potential for excavation instability. A case study, the No. 1 Shear East orebody at Vale?s Garson Mine in Sudbury, Ontario will be examined. A three-dimensional, elastoplastic, finite difference model (FLAC 3D) is presented for a mine development intersection situated 1.5 km below ground surface. The developed assessment scale matrix is used to estimate risk index for intersection (2981) located on 5000 level. The results are presented and categorized with respect to risk-index value, probability of instability, cost of consequence, and mining stage.

For the purpose of determining confidence limits for ore grade estimates, an extensive simulated data base was used, which included 1728 ore blocks with ‘actual’ grades and the corresponding estimates based on ordinary and simple kriging. The practical results show that conditional unbiasedness is essential and that acceptable confidence limits can then be set using Normal theory for the simulated error distribution based on the logarithms of the ratios of ‘actuals’/estimates with a variance related to the kriging variance. The mean of the data used to prepare the variogram and the estimated block grade are to be used properly in this approach. A practical analysis was also done of the actual point and block data from a very large mined out Carbon Leader area. The distributions of the actual grades for two levels of block sizes with different levels of variability were fitted using three models, ie. 2-. 3- and compound-lognormal. The trends of tonnages, grades and relative profits for a range of pay limits, as well as the usual tonnage-grade curves, show a practical insensitivity for the choice between the three lognormal models considered.
