A satisfactory mean: of beneficiating a Brazilian phosphate rock was developed in a mineral-dressing-research study by the Bureau of Mines. High-grade concentrates well ever the specified minimum grade of 70 percent tricalcium phosphate, were produced, with goad recoveries by agglomerate tabling and flotation. A lower gads but usable secondary product was recovered by sedimentation of the minus-200-mesh fraction of the ore. The ore wan representative of an extensive deposit recently discovered near Recife in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, which will be exploited in a plant planned to eventually produce at the rate of 500,000 tons of concentrate annually. Although Brazil has been reported to Lave a substantial reserve of phosphate rock,3/ the country has never been more than a small producer of this commodity. From 1945 to 1950 the highest production of phosphate rock attained in Brazil amounted to 10,421 tons. Production in 1949, the most recent year for which figures are available, was 4,553 tons.4/

Infrared spectroscopy employing attenuated total reflectance (ATR) techniques on thin films of dried gelatinized starch solution was used during Bureau of Mines research to determine the structural and impurity differences in starch products and to correlate these characteristics with the flotation response of a nonmagnetic taconite. All of the starch products evaluated gave spectrograms which were characteristic of the anhydroglucose monomer and its polymerization product. Distinct infrared absorption peaks caused by the protein molecule were observed and were used to classify the starches. Correlation of laboratory flotation of calcium-activated gangue from a Mesabi Range nonmagnetic taconite and infrared spectra produced from gelatinized starches showed that protein impurities and linear chain structure limited the effectiveness of starches as iron mineral depressants. Starch products having spectrograms similar to pure amylopectin were generally good depressants for iron oxides, were effective at about one-half the addition that was required for starches that gave infrared responses similar to pure amylose, and yielded acceptable iron concentrates containing 61.5 percent iron and 6.5 percent silica.

The Code of Federal Regulations Title 30, Parts 56, 57, 75, and 77 require that detonators and explosives be separated by four inches of hardwood or equivalents when transported together in mines. This standard was developed to protect the explosives from initiation by the more sensitive detonators. The research reported here is an attempt to quantify the fire protection offered by four inches of red oak and other materials. Boxes with a volume of 6.75 cubic feet were made from four-inch thick rough green oak (RGO), two-inch thick RGO plied, two-inch thick #1 common (dried) red oak plied, and a metal/plywood composite. These and boxes meeting the Institute of Makers of Explosives' (IME) Safety Library Publication No. 22 were tested in bonfires. The boxes were instrumented with thermocouples, filled with detonators, and placed over a kerosene fire imparting about 16 kilowatts per square meter heat flux for up to 3 hours. Tests showed that the wood boxes protected the detonators for over an hour with variations between the different trials. In the IME 22 container tests, detonators began exploding in as little as 17 minutes in one test and not for 2-/12 hours in another test. Detonators in the metal/plywood boxes began to explode in about 15 minutes but with minor alterations, were able to contain the detonators. The test results show that the exterior of an IME 22 container significantly affects its thermal properties. Defects in the form of cracks and the manner in which the container is closed have a significant effect on the performance of a detonator container in a fire.

Laboratory semicontinuous and continuous heavy liquid cyclone separation pilot plant tests were made to determine the feasibility of producing a high-grade kyanite concentrate from a kyanite-quartz rock sample from Graves Mountain, Ga. Use of a three-stage heavy liquid cyclone circuit demonstrated that a 96.4-to 99.0-percent kyanite concentrate could be obtained with recoveries of 95.5 to 96.7 percent. The test work showed that by steam stripping with 6.9 tons of steam per ton of ore and two stages of detergent scrubbing the residual TBE content of kyanite cyclone products was 0.22 pound per ton of ore.

Determine the effectiveness of remining operations in reducing contaminant load (acidity, iron, and sulfate) of discharges emanating from abandoned surface and underground coal mines. Background Until the implementation of remining initiatives, most States had regulations that held the operator remining an abandoned site responsible for preexisting acid mine drainage (AMD) discharges. For example, if a mining. company wanted to remine an area hydrologically connected to an existing AMD discharge, the company became responsible, as soon as the site was activated, for treating that discharge to meet effluent standards. If the mining operation improved the quality of the discharge, but the discharge failed to meet effluent standards, the company was held accountable for perpetual treatment. Because of this regulation, most mine operators avoided abandoned sites with minable coal reserves and AMD discharges. However, changes in remining legislation allow coal companies to be released from treatment liability as long as the post-remining pollution load does not exceed the pre-remining level. Optimum autoclaving conditions were determined for separation of iron and manganese values from pregnant leach liquor produced in extracting manganese from low-grade umber are. The umber was leached with a synthetic anolyte similar to a recycle solution, used in manganese electrolysis cell operations, that had been renewed with ferrous sulfate and sulfuric acid. The equipment used and results obtained are presented for the several conditions employed. The kinetics of the separation were studied. Rate equations were derived for the formation of solid ammonium-manganese sulfate, (NH4)2 Mn2 (S04)3.

Longwall mining is the most productive method of under- ground coal mining in the United States (U.S.), and record levels of production have been reached in recent years. These ever-improving production levels have the potential to generate significantly higher quantities of respirable dust. Consequently, the longwall industry continues to struggle with controlling dust liberation and maintaining compliance with the federally-mandated respirable dust standard. In response, longwall operators have increased the application of primary dust controls, airflow and water flow, in an effort to improve respirable dust control and reduce worker exposure. Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) personnel conducted dust surveys at 13 longwalls operating throughout the U.S. and collected information to: identify current operating practices on these longwalls, identify the types of dust controls in use, document the levels at which these controls are being applied, and measure the respirable dust levels present. This data was analyzed to quantify the dust levels generated by the major sources on the longwall section and to evaluate the relative effectiveness of the control technologies in use.

This study is intended to serve three roles. First, it is the second annual edition of this study in a separate volume that represents a global overview and summary to supplement and complement the five regional volumes that now constitute the U.S. Bureau of Mines international, geographically arranged studies. In this regard, it also extends previous works under this title that appeared in the inter-national volume of the Minerals Year-book from the inception of that volume (the 1963 edition) until it was subdivided into six separate volumes in 1989. Following the traditional format of past chapters under this title, the basic statistical presentations herein deal chiefly with 1990, and in a few instances with 1988 or 1989; these latter two only because more recent, comprehensive global statistics simply are not yet available owing to delays in data collection and processing in some countries and continued governmental suppression of data in others. The second role of this study is to provide an update to the coverage of events impacting on the world's mineral industry that have occurred between the end of 1990 and the preparation of this study. Inclusion of this update is almost essential because of the potential effect of some of these events on global mineral industry activities.

The Bureau of Mines studied thermodynamic properties of Al-Ni alloys con¬taining 0.54 to 30.04 atomic percent nickel with the aid of the high-temperature galvanic cell Al(1) // Al+3 (AlCl3 in NaCI.KC1) // Al-Ni alloy (1 or s). Activities of aluminum and nickel (compared with pure liquid metals as the standard state) show pronounced negative deviation from Raoult's law at 1,273 K. The properties [?G, ?Gxs, ?G ideal, ?GA1, AGxs1, ?Gni , and ?GNixs] have been derived from the experimental data and are summarized in tables and illustrations. At 1,127 K, the thermodynamic stability for the invariant three-phase equilibrium consisting of a saturated liquid, A13Ni, and A13Ni2 has been uniquely defined by an activity for aluminum of 0.751. A free energy of formation at 1,127 K of -7,940 cal/g-atom was derived for the compound A13Ni.

Researchers working for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Pittsburgh Research Center are developing ways to protect the health of miners. Part of that effort is improving the air quality in metal/nonmetal mines by developing proper ventilation techniques. The air quality of large opening nonmetal mines can be greatly improved by using engineering controls of contaminant prevention and proper ventilation techniques. Contaminant prevention includes methods to reduce contaminants from entering the mine air. Ventilation can be improved with appropriate fan selection and fan operation used in conjunction with air coursing using manmade and insitu rock stoppings.

An important activity of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and industry . In connection with these activities , the Bureau determines the explosion hazards of combustible gases , liquids , and solids , and investigates means by which explosions may be eliminated or reduced in violence . The limits of inflammability and ignition temperatures of combustible gases , vapors , and solids are of practical importance because such materials can be manufactured , transported , and used with greater safety , provided the range of concentrations and temperatures that cause explosions are known. Acetic anhydride , ( CH3CO) 20 , with which this report is concerned , is a liquid at ordinary temperatures . It is used in the preparation of a number of organic chemicals and in the manufacture of photographic film and of artificial silk . It is perhaps the most important acetylating agent for industrial uses - a property that is especially important at this time because of its direct application in the manufacture of munitions . The sample tested was supplied by the Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corporation . Its specific gravity was given as 1.083 at 20/20 . The vapor pressures , supplied by the manufacturer , are plotted in figure 1 .

New mineral activity focused on increased petroleum exploration activities, while the established construction-oriented minerals sector operated without substantial change from previous years. After showing a 1 % real growth in the $154 million II gross domestic product (GDP) for 1983, preliminary estimates for 1984 indicated that the same growth pattern prevailed. The negative trade balance at midyear had worsened over the negative balance for the same period in 1983. An upward trend in import costs partly reflected the impact of Mexican inflation, which made that country's goods more ex-pensive and led to increased imports from North America and Europe. On the other hand, by midyear, the reexport trade with Mexico indicated an upward climb from the 1988 low of $12.7 million.

This paper describes a U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation of large-scale coal dust explosions in an experimental mine using a high speed electro pneumatic mechanism for the rapid grab-sampling of gases and dusts. This technique enables the monitoring of pyrolysis and charring in fuel dust particles, and the collection of gaseous combustion products, in both large and small-scale explosions. Data obtained from full-scale dust explosion tests at the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Test facility show the following: Rapid sampling appears to "freeze" the burned gas compositions at the flame temperature values. Gas samples taken entirely in the flame zone consist of pyrolysis and combustion products with very low residual oxygen. The particles collected in the flame zone show signs of extensive pyrolysis and charring. Measurements of gas concentrations and particle flame temperatures suggest that char burning may have occurred in the flame zone.

The Bureau of Mines investigated carbonyl processing techniques for the recovery of the critical metals Ni, Co, Mn, and Cr from domestic primary and secondary sources. In most cases, the source materials require reductive precarbonylation treatment to metallize the contained Fe, Ni, and Co compounds to render them reactive with CO. The critical metals were recovered either by direct conversion to the respective carbonyls or as upgraded products by carbonyl removal of an undesirable metal. Best metal-to-metal carbonyl conversion was under CO pressure, from 80 atm upward, and at 1400 C. Carbonylation was accelerated by the addition of HzS in small quantities. CO pressure, temperature, promoter and pretreatment trends, and other factors enhancing metal carbonyl formation are presented.

The use of shall electrically- driven fans , in conjunction with air- pipe of various diameters is becoming of increasing importance for the ventilation of working places in metal mines through which the general ventilating currents can not be coursed . It will probably continue to increase in importance since the concept that air motion is the most important factor in maintaining comfort in hot ( above 80° F . ) working places is more generally accepted , and as the inefficiency and greater expense of attempting to ventilate such places with compressed air is recognized . Managers of large properties can afford to experiment with fan- pipe installations until types are found that meet their conditions , but managers of shall properties , unless forced to it by extreme conditions , prefer to wait until they can obtain data sufficient to guarantee at least a measure of success from such installations . At present , such data , even in part , are available to only a few (mainly fan manufacturer's representatives , consulting ventilation engineers , and ventilatin engineers employed by large companies ) , and important recent developments are mostly of a confidential nature . One large metal - mining company cooperated with a fan manufacturer in some extensive experimental work on small blowers and found that instead of using stock fans , considerable power economy could be effected and equal quantities of air delivered by use of or 2/3 width fans with small motors rather than using stock fans and larger motors ; it was also found advisable to adopt certain sizes of tubing for certain lengths of run . In fact , many important facts were ascertained in this study , and it is now promised that they will soon be given to the public . It is true that a certain amount of data on industrial installations are available , but such data are only in part applicable to metal -mine conditions , because , until recently , little attention has been given to ventilation in metalmines , and the conditions encountered usually require a greater length of pipe , a more temporary type of construction , and closer attention to temperature control than the ordinary run of industrial installations demands ..

A method for evaluating the relative incendivity of detonating cord in natural gas-air mixtures was developed. The method consisted of firing short lengths of cord in bundles to determine the number of strands per bundle which would ignite natural gas-air mixtures 50 percent of the time in the 45-cubic-foot gallery of the Bureau of Mines. The relative efficiency of a flame quenching agent, potassium acid tartrate (KHT), when incorporated in both the pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) core and the polyethylene sheath, was explored. The effects of sheath thickness, sheath composition, core weight, and core composition were evaluated. The bundle method established a quantitative scale for evaluating the relative incendivity of cords. The relative incendivity determined by the bundle method was then compared with the incendivity of 100-foot lengths of detonating cord when initiated in 8 percent natural gas in the 640-cubic-foot gallery of the Bureau of Mines.

The Bureau of Mines performed a comparative study of nine sites at eight surface coal mines to determine if the presence of near-surface underground abandoned workings resulted in the generation of adverse long-duration, low-frequency blast vibrations. Six of the nine sites had underlying workings, and two had thick layers of low-velocity unconsolidated surface material. Extended seismic arrays were used to identify the vibration characteristics within a few tens of feet of the blasts and also as modified by the propagating media at distances over 1 mile. Production blasts and specially fired single-charge blasts allowed the determination of natural ground frequency and the influence of initiation delay timing. Vibration amplitudes from the production blasts at all sites exceeded historical norms, particularly at the greater distances. This contrasts with the near-normal results from single-charge blasts. Apparently, between-hole time delays were insufficient to separate vibrations from adjacent charges for the low-frequency waves present. Single-charge tests showed that the propagating media produced low-frequency, ground-roIl-type surface waves at nearly all sites. Large blasts at such sites could produce an unacceptable risk of vibration-induced cracks in nearby structures.

Throughout the Appalachian Mountains there are dikes of coarse granite or pegmatite, which were intruded into other rocks. These pegmatite dikes contain feldspar, quartz, white mica (muscovite), black mica (biotite), and other minerals, such as beryl, garnet, and tourmaline. The investigation here reported has to do only with the dikes of the southern Appalachian region, in which the abundance of each mineral is as in the order given above. The pegmatites of this region are in every stage of alteration from those in which the feldspar is fresh to those in which the feldspar has decomposed to kaolin. The muscovite (white mica) shows no evidence of alteration, although most of the other associated minerals show traces of disintegration where the feldspar is completely kao- linized. At many places mining for mica has been done in dikes in which the feldspar is completely kaolinized, though the only evi- dences of disintegration in the mica are clay stains which are some- times noted between the outside lamina. Mining in these pegmatite dikes antedates history, traces of prehis- toric workings and some crude mining implements of stone having been unearthed by recent operations. The prehistoric mining is generally supposed to have been for mica, although investigations fail to show that the aborigines put the mica obtained to any par- ticular use except for ornaments, a few mica ornaments having been found in mounds in this region. The search for kaolin or semikaolinized feldspar is a plausible ex- planation of these prehistoric workings; all of them were in pegmatite that is more or less altered, and seemingly stopped only when the pegmatite became too hard to permit working with crude stone im- plements. The dumps do not represent the amount of material that one would expect, from their extent, the workings to have produced. MULSIM/NL (multiple seams, nonlinear) is a new U.S. Bureau of Mines boundary-element-method (BEM) program for calculating stresses and displacements (is., convergence) in coal mines or thin, tabular rnetalliferous veins. This manual gives detailed operating instructions for MULSIM/NL and illustrates its use with several practical examples. While this manual concentrates on the practical aspects of actually running and using MULSIM/NL, another companion report titled "MULSIM/NL- Theoretical and Programmer's Manual" provides mathematical and programming details to those engineers and programmers who need to fully understand the FORTRAN program or desire to alter and enhance it. MULSIMINL analyzes one to four parallel seams that have any orientation with respect to the Earth's surface. Three main features distinguish MULSIM/NL from its predecessors: (1) nonlinear material models, (2) multiple mining steps, and (3) comprehensive energy release and strain energy computations. MULSIM/NL has six material models for the in-seam material including (1) linear elastic for coal, (2) strain softening, (3) elastic plastic, (4) bilinear hardening, (5) strain hardening, and (6) linear elastic for gob. The multiple mining step capability enables the user to simulate a changing mine geometry. Finally, MULSIM/NL performs comprehensive energy release rate calculations.
