An essential element of the Bureau of Mines electromagnetic location and communication system for trapped miners is a quantitative knowledge of the surface and above-surface electromagnetic fields created by an underground transmitter. The field solutions given in this report use approximations in which the displacement currents are negligible for low frequencies. The earth is represented by a homogeneous half-space model in which a dipole source is immersed. The vertical magnetic field equipotential contours at and above the surface are graphically mapped. The volumes of the regions bounded by these contours are directly related to the geometrical zones of signal detectability. Knowledge of the detectability zones will enable the proper search strategies to be developed for airborne detection of trapped miners.

"Nearly every piece of electrical equipment used in mines ""breathes."" In other words, motors, controllers, rheostats, switches, and other similar equipment, even though encased in seemingly tight compartments, breathe in the atmosphere that surrounds them.As the apparatus is used, the temperature of metallic parts is changed generally in positive direction through the heat by friction and the heat due to the electric current. When the apparatus is idle it gradually cools down to the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere.This increase of temperature during operation and return to normal temperature when operation stops alternately raises and lowers the temperature of the atmosphere within the compartments which, in strict accordance with Charles' law -will expand or contract in proportion to any given temperature change.As compartments are not gas-tight, such expansion and contraction will force the atmosphere out of the compartment =on expansion and suck the surround¬ing atmosphere into the compartment during contraction, hence the term ""breathing.""Investigators2 of explosion-proof equipment have recognized that such an interchange would take place and have designed their equipment to safeguard possible explosions within the compartments."

1.1 General The examination and evaluation of a mineral deposit to determine whether or not it can be profitably exploited entails many factors unrelated to the physical nature and intrinsic worth of that deposit. Nevertheless, geology and geologically related factors have great bearing on the economic potential of the deposit. This is only natural because the deposit owes its existence to these factors. This is even more so in underground mines where the whole system is a geologically enclosed one. Geology plays a major role in at least four phases of a mineral venture. Firstly, it acts as an indicator of the existence of parti¬cular minerals. For example, it is inconceivable that a sedimentary coal deposit would exist in a granitic batholith or stock, or that a sandstone would host primary copper or nickel sulphides. Further, the positional relationship of different rock types may be significant in locating deposits such as replacement zinc and copper sulphides in limestones which have been intruded by igneous rocks. Thus, geology is important in the exploration phase of a mineral deposit. Secondly, once potentially valuable minerals have been discovered, knowledge of geology plays a significant role in determining the dis¬tribution, grade and extent of the mineralization. Ventilation is undoubtedly the greatest single safety factor in the operation of a coal mine. Any condition or occurrence that interrupts the ventilating current or changes its normal course through the mine workings is a distinct hazard and should be considered as such by every coal-mine owner, operator, and worker. The hazard, of course, is much greater in a mine that is emitting gas, as an explosive mixture can accumulate in a very short period if the ventilating current is interrupted. It is common to find one or more entries producing 600 cubic feet or more of methane per hour. If the ventilating current were short-circuited from these entries for 15 minutes, there would be an accumulation of 150 cubic feet of methane, which, when mixed with enough air to dilute it to the lowest explosive point, would make about 3,000 cubic feet of explosive mixture; this gas could be ignited in almost any normally operated mine by a cutting machine or other electrical equipment. The ignition of this quantity of an explosive gas-air mixture can readily cause an explosion of coal dust that would completely wreck the underground workings and possibly some of the surface structures. In fact, the ignition of one-tenth of the above quantity of an explosive mixture of gas and air might readily start an explosion that would, extend through every part of a large mine. The possibility of occurrence of interruptions to the ventilating current has received comparatively little consideration from mine owners, operators, and workers in many parts of the United States. Such a possibility should be considered in connection with every mine that gives off explosive gas, and steps should be taken to prevent it.

Laboratory studies were made to produce whiskers of tungsten over a wide range of operating temperatures. Hydrogen reduction of tungsten hexachloride in a vacuum furnace at temperatures from 2,7000 to 3,3000 C yielded a small quantity of tungsten whiskers, provided a low degree of supersaturation was maintained. Direct measurements of 3,000,000 to 4,000,000 psi were obtained for the ultimate tensile strengths of individual whiskers averaging 3 to 4 microns in diameter with average aspect ratios of 1,000. This compares with strengths of 300,000 to 400,000 psi for 13-micron-diameter commercial filaments.

Following the severe starch-dust explosion in the casting department of a large candy factory nearly 2 years ago, great interest has been shown in the explosive properties and the safe manufacture and handling of powdered starches. Under the auspices of the National Fire Protection Association, a committee has been formed to prepare a code aimed at preventing dust explosions in the confectionery industry. One objective of this code will be to reduce the explosion hazards of starches that are widely used for molding, dusting, and other candy-manufacturing processes. The explosibilities of starches and starch mixtures have been studied in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines and elsewhere. The results of the initial experiments made by the Bureau on 10 samples of cornstarch and mixtures of cornstarch with other materials have been published. In response to numerous requests for additional information, further laboratory studies have been conducted. Data have been obtained on the effects of dust concentration, particle size, moisture content, admixture of .calcium carbonate, and on the effect of oil treatment on the explosibility of cornstarch. The results of this investigation are summarized in this report.

Science involves the study of the nature and behaviour of natural things and the knowledge we obtain about them. Scientific endeavour leads to the unfolding of new knowledge and adjustments to our understanding and our behavior. To indicate that we ‘know’ something may merely mean we do not feel able to, or that we do not wish to, disagree with others who claim to know; or it may mean we have either heard about it, or studied it, or understand part of it, or accept that it is true, or have seen evidence to be convinced of its veracity. What do we ‘know’ about the health effects of vibration? There are many unknowns in the field of human responses to vibration. Not all would agree on what is known and what is unknown. This paper seeks to summarize what we know that we know, what it is sometimes claimed that we know, and what we know that we do not know about the relation between exposures to vibration and our health. It also speculates on what we do not know that we do not know. Hand-transmitted vibration What we know we know We know that exposures to hand-transmitted vibration result in various disorders of the hand, including abnormal vascular and neurological function. Not all frequencies, or magnitudes, or durations, of hand-transmitted vibration cause the same effects. What we may claim to know To enable exposures to be reported and compared, they are ‘measured’ and ‘evaluated’ using defined (e.g. standardised) procedures. This involves identifying what is to be measured and specifying how it is expressed by one (or a few) numbers. Summarising a vibration exposure in a single value involves assuming the relative importance of components within the vibration (e.g. different magnitudes, frequencies, directions, and durations), so standards define ‘weightings’ for these variables. The importance of the weighted values may also be suggested, allowing ‘assessments’ according to a criterion (e.g. the probability of a specific severity of a specific disease). Standards for the measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration define a frequency weighting and time dependencies that allow the severity of vibration exposures to be assessed and the probability of finger blanching to be predicted 1. What we do not know We do not know that the frequency weighting in current standards reflects the relative importance of different frequencies and axes of vibration in producing any specific disorder. We do not know whether the energy-based daily time-dependency inherent in A(8) reflects the relative importance of vibration magnitude and daily exposure duration. Consequently, the relation between A(8) and the years of exposure to develop finger blanching, as in an appendix to ISO 5349-1 (2001), is not well-founded. We do not know, or at least there is no consensus on, the full extent of the disorders caused by hand-transmitted vibration (e.g. vascular, neurological, muscular, articular, central), or the pathogenesis of any specific disorder caused by hand-transmitted vibration, or the roles of other factors (e.g. ergonomic factors, environmental factors, or individual factors). ANFO blasting agents may undergo an exothermic reaction when they contact warm ore bodies that contain pyrite and its weathering products. The reaction is very fast at temperatures above 80° C. Urea, when present in sufficient amounts, inhibits this reaction at temperatures below 180° C. But urea-ammonium nitrate mixtures are very hygroscopic and, in certain climates, may be difficult to handle in the field. Reaction-inhibiting characteristics of three compounds were reported by the Bureau of Mines in 1979. Recently, the Bureau investigated the reaction-inhibiting qualities of five additional compounds. Mixtures of ANFO, pyrite, weathering product, and prospective inhibitors were slowly heated, under conditions simulating a hot borehole, to determine prospective inhibitor capability at temperatures up to ~175° C. Small-scale thermal tests of the same mixtures were used for verification and clarification of results. Two organic compounds, phthalimide and xanthine, similar in structure to urea, failed to inhibit the reaction. Zinc oxide and calcium carbonate were found inferior to urea, though zinc oxide raised the onset of reaction from 80° C to about 140° C. Only magnesium oxide was found to be similar to urea in its inhibitory ability at temperatures below 175° C. Based on results from analysis of quenched residues, the use of more than 5 wt-pct magnesium oxide is recommended.

Table 37 and figure 13 show the number of fires and fire injuries for surface stone mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 37 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. In all, 96 fires occurred in 31 states and 1 fire occurred in Puerto Rico. Sixty-eight of the fires caused 67 injuries and 1 fatality (including 6 fires and 5 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was eight fires and 5.6 injuries. The Ewhr value was 689 x 106 hr (Irr = 0.02), and the LWD value was 7,399. Indiana had the most fires (eight fires and four injuries), followed by Georgia (seven fires and seven injuries) and Pennsylvania (seven fires and five injuries). Of these states, Georgia had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr = 0.058). Table 38, partly illustrated in figure 14, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires and fire injuries show an increase during the second period followed by a decrease during most of the remaining periods. Employees' working hours increased during most of the periods. The In values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values. Tables 39-44 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 15 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 45 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

8. Refuge Chambers 8.1 Refuge Chambers - Technical Discussion 8.1.1 Introduction As a part of the overall escape system, refuge chambers can provide a last resort when existing escapeways are blocked. These chambers are intended to provide both protection from toxic gases and a life supporting environment for a period of time before external rescue or further escape efforts can be carried out Escapeways may be blocked physically (due to cave-ins, etc), by fire, or by the presence of a toxic or oxygen deficient atmosphere. In the first two cases, the trapped miners would most likely await external rescue efforts, and hence the design of the chamber will have to consider the time durations that such efforts may take, It is also possible, in the second case, for fire fighting and fire protective equipment to be stored in the chamber so that miners may attempt their own escape. In the third case, it should be recognized that a compact, beltmounted 1-hour self-contained breathing apparatus has been developed(9), and that other, less compact equipment is available for up to 4 hours of self-contained breathing supply. If such equipment were stored in the chambers, then miners could escape by travelling from chamber to chamber, taking temporary refuge in each before proceeding to the next. 8.1.2 Background The concept of "barricading" has long been recommended for those emergencies where miners are trapped inby a fire. Barricading, which is the construction of a makeshift shelter in a crosscut or deadend, protects the entrapped miners from toxic gases and enables them to conserve a supply of air. In this manner, they can survive two or three days--hopefully enough time for them to be reached by rescue teams. In the past, many lives have been saved with this technique.

IN 1944 the Congress passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act that authorized the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Federal Bureau of Mines, to conduct basic research and construct and operate demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and other substances. As a basis for the oil shale investigations to be undertaken in this country, the progress of foreign countries in developing and using oil shale as a source of liquid fuels was studied by the technical missions of the Federal Bureau of Mines. Oil shale mines, retorting plants, and refineries were visited; geological information on the nature and occurrence of the foreign oil shales was obtained; and samples of the oil shales were collected where possible. Samples collected by these missions or acquired by other means came from Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Manchuria (China) , New Zealand, Scot-land, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, and Union of South Africa. These countries represent a large part of the locations where oil shale developments have taken place. The major omissions are the Estonian, German, and Russian developments.

The Bureau of Mines applied automatic computational methods to analyze the degree of correlation between sound transmission and atmospheric conditions. Statistical analysis of data collected over a 5-month period indicated that the following weather variables, listed in order of decreasing importance) have a significant effect on the transmission of sound in the atmosphere: 1. Wind velocity and wind direction. Winds in the direction of travel of the sound wave increase the sound intensity and duration. 2. Barometric pressure. High pressures are related to low sound intensities and durations. 3. Atmospheric temperature. High temperatures are related to low sound intensities and durations. Inversion of the atmospheric temperature did not appear to affect sound transmission under the conditions of this study.

The face ventilation measurement method developed by the Bureau of Mines involves releasing a small volume of tracer gas (SF6) on the off-curtain side of the working face at the start of the mining cycle. At the same time, gas bottle samples are taken in the immediate return airway. The gas samples are analyzed, and a curve is drawn of SF6 concentration versus time. From this curve, the percentage of gas removed per time is calculated. A curve showing a high percentage of the tracer gas removed in a short period would represent a well-ventilated face. The face ventilation measurement method was tested in a full-scale mine entry model. Subsequently it was used underground to evaluate the spray-fan ventilation system and in an MSHA test facility to test machine-mounted scrubbers. The method was shown to be a simple and effective way of evaluating face ventilation systems.

Rivers in industrial and raining areas frequently are contaminated by material dumped into them causing the water to carry in suspension large amounts of silt, which subsequently is deposited alone; the banks and, ultimately on the agricultural lands if the water is used for irrigation purposes. Two common examples of this practice are the dumping of breaker refuse in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania and the dumping of tailings from the metallurgical mills in various metal-mining districts. Studies in stream pollution and its resultant problems are very important, and surveys are constantly being made by Federal and State agencies, as well as by private companies, to determine the quantity of solids actually being carried by these watercoarses. These studies require accurate sampling of the silt-carrying water to determine the amount of solids within reasonable limits. A device that will obtain reasonably accurate samples of material from silt-bearing streams is described in this circular.

Mining as an extractive process alone is outdated and unacceptable to today's environmentally concerned public. Multiple land use must be considered as well. Only through effective preplanning can the full potential of reclamation result in a lasting asset for future generations. The coal industry is now recognizing that reclamation of mined lands is part of the mining cycle that must be planned and carried out in a timely and orderly manner. It is also finding that planning reclamation in advance of mining is cheaper and more effective than waiting until mining is completed. The decision to open a strip mine must be based on the results of studies to determine if successful reclamation can be achieved and whether the economic benefits to the company will be justified(1). Information regarding the physical, chemical, hydrologic and biologic systems operative at the site must be under- stood or reclamation will be a failure. Working together, engineers, management and reclamation specialists should design the actual mining and reclamation plan before mining is begun.

Computer input data for an operating mine is developed on the basis of a detailed ventilation survey which includes air quantity, air quality, pressure loss and fan performance measurements. Quantity measurements must be reviewed extensively and assumptions made about leakage quantities and airflow paths. Pressure measurements must be reviewed and developed into a pressure gradient for the mine system. Air quality measurements are used to determine methane sources and amounts. Finally, the fan test data is used to develop the correct fan characteristic curve. Quantities and pressure losses for each branch in the system are used to calculate the branch resistances which are then utilized in the ventilation simulator to model the mine system. QUANTITY BALANCE The quantity of air coming into a mine based on field measurements will rarely equal the quantity exiting the mine, even if allowances are made for methane or compressed air input to the system. The same statement can be made for airflow through any isolated part of the mine ventilation system such as individual working section or main aircourses leading to an area isolated from the rest of the mine. The reason for the apparent discrepancies is the accuracy of the indicated quantities which in turn is based on the accuracy of the individual velocity and area measurements. Even with measurements following the guidelines described in the previous section on quantity measurement, this error can only be minimized but not eliminated. As a result the ventilation system must be carefully balanced so that, for any loop, the quantity in plus any methane or compressed air injection will equal the quantity out. This Bureau of Mines report outlines the atomic absorption analysis of oilfield brines for barium, calcium, copper, iron, lead lithium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium, strontium, and zinc, using the method of additions. The advantages of using atomic absorption are discussed. The method of additions was chosen to overcome large matrix interferences usually found in brines; techniques of overcoming chemical, ionization, and background interferences are also described. The method was used to analyze several hundred oilfield brines and found to be rapid and reasonably accurate. A solvent extraction method was used to concentrate lead, copper, zinc, and iron in low-level samples.

Laboratory and underground studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the effectiveness of a water-powered scrubber and a brattice partition to create a clean split of air for longwall workers at the tailgate. In simulated laboratory tests, the system was very effective in creating a clean split of air. Observed system efficiencies were 74 and 84 pct with induced airflows of approximately 2,000 and 2,500 cfm, respectively. Underground evaluations indicated that the system was capable of reducing respirable dust at the tailgate. The first underground evaluation resulted in protection efficiencies of 30.7 and 42.5 pct at scrubber water pressures of 150 and 450 psig, respectively. A 33.7-pct protection efficiency was observed in the second underground evaluation with a modified partition and the scrubber operating at 250-psig water pressure. To be most effective, the system should have the scrubber operating at a flowrate of 10 gpm at 500 psig to deliver a maximum quantity of cleaned air behind a well-sealed partition.

The Pittsburgh Mine Map Repository of the Bureau of Mines serves as a basic reference file for the archival preservation of mine map data of mines east of the Mississippi River. About 22,000 of an estimated 500,000 available mine maps have been microfilmed A computerized index serves as the mechanism for retrieval of any microfilmed mine map. The operation, equipment, and index are described in the report.

Increasing use of continuous miners, especially the boring type, has focused attention on the inadequacy of face ventilation in coal mines. The bulk of the machine, the rapid advance of working faces, and the increased liberation of methane from the larger expanse of freshly exposed coal surfaces have created ventilation problems that were unknown with conventional mining equipment. Ignition of gas, especially that caused by machine bits striking hard rock or pyritic inclusions, have increased at an alarming rate. As the mines penetrate beds under thicker cover at an ever-increasing rate of face advance, this problem will probably increase unless face ventilation is improved. A previous survey, described in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5414, Auxiliary Ventilation of Continuous Miner Places, disclosed that auxiliary fans with tubing generally improved circulation of air and removal of gas at the face. The study here reported attempts to examine, face ventilation at various mines and to note any plan or innovation of. air coursing that industry might adopt to reduce the danger of gas ignition.
