This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of a microseismic study conducted in the Climax block cave mine at Climax, Colo. Rock noises created by caving were monitored and their sources located during a 3-month period. A planar array of seven accelerometers, located above the block of ore being caved, detected the rock noise. A computer was used to calculate the location of the microseismic activity, using a traveltime difference method. The accuracy of these locations was estimated to be ±20 feet. An analysis of the data taken during the recording period showed a concentration of microseismic events located in the wall of the cave panel. This concentration of events was found to occur in a "high-silica" geologic forma-tion that cut across the caving panel approximately 200 feet behind the undercut.

"Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of 'mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health deterioration:-The respirable contaminants in mine atmo¬spheres are toxic and explosive gases, toxic and explosive dusts, diesel exhaust particu¬lates, radon progeny, etc. Perhaps the most important of all these and the most widely occurring in mine atmospheres is respirable dust, an inevitable product of fragmentation, a unit operation fundamental to all mining operations. In fact; the-most serious health hazard for workers in the mining and minerals processing industries is still the exposure to respirable dust, and solutions to the problem of respirable dust disease remain to be found.The 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act and its provisions for the respirable dust standards in underground coal mines are briefly reviewed. An overview of the research accomplishments in meeting the standards is presented. The current state of knowledge on the effectiveness of the standards and the new and emerging problems are discussed. A brief summary of the research programs of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust is presented.In general, underground mines are becoming increasingly safe. In general, mining is carried on underground, that is, in confined places where it is difficult to obtain adequate lighting and frequently in rock strata requiring much care to prevent caving. Moreover, explosives must be used in mining with the numerous hazards associated with them, and some mines give off explosive or irrespirable gases; also, ma- chinery must be used, usually under conditions much more hazardous than on the surface. These and many other considerations cause mining to be probably the most hazardous occupation in which large numbers of our fellow countrymen are employed. Prevention of accidents in the mining industry is far more complicated than in surface industrial work, even of the more hazardous types, because the different elements that enter into possible accident occurrence are ascertained more readily above ground and suitable action can be taken against them; moreover, errors in connection with prevention of accidents in surface industrial work usually affect only one or, possibly, a few persons, while in zines one human error may readily cause an explosion or other untoward occurrence resulting in the death of scores or even hundreds of persons. This difficulty in the prevention of accidents in and around mines is well-known, and most countries and States have regulations to guard the safety and, to a much smaller extent, the health of workers in mining and allied industries. In general, the State laws and regu- lations regarding the welfare of mine workers are merely a skeletonized outline of some more or less fundamental minimum requirements and are far too general to do much more than suggest some procedure which may or may not be safe or healthful. Most of them are grotesquely out-of-date as applied to present-day conditions, and none of them is adequate to protect life, limb, health, or property. Unquestionably, there is great need for a closer correlation of the laws and regulations of the various States with regard to safety in the mining and allied industries, and while mining conditions vary far too much for a standardized mine safety law applicable to all of the States, on the other hand there are numerous standard and fairly fundamental safety pro- visions which apply to all mines and which should be embodied in the mining codes of all States. Undoubtedly, these standardized safety requirements would be opposed by a consider- able part of the industry, but the ultimate effect would be beneficial to the owners, work- ers, and the general public. For many years progressive mining companies in the United States have not been satisfied to operate only within the meager safety requirements of the State laws or regulations and have adopted additional and far more effective safety procedure of their own, although com- plying also with the State laws and regulations. As a result of this forward-locking policy, zany of these companies have made astonishing progress in the reduction of accidents.

Electrooxidation techniques were investigated on a bench scale by the Bureau of Mines to determine the applicability of the process for extracting molybdenum and rhenium from low-grade molybdenite concentrates. Parameters affecting the extraction, such as pulp density, power consumption, reagent requirements for pH control, and electrolytic cell configuration, were studied. Molybdenum and rhenium extractions of 98 to 99 percent were achieved from several concentrates containing 4.76 to 28.6 percent molybdenum and 180 ppm to 1,000 ppm rhenium. Optimum results were obtained by maintaining pH values between 5.5 and 7.0 during electrolysis and allowing the final pH to rise to about 8.2. Reagent consumption was 4 to 6 pounds of sodium carbonate per pound of molybdenum extracted. The power consumption declined from a range of 12 to 25 kilowatt hours per pound of molybdenum extracted with immersion electrodes to 9.7 kilowatt hours with a bipolar flow-through cell; however, molybdenum extraction was independent of cell configuration.

Atlantic seaboard refining and marketing companies , dependent largely upon other producing and refining areas for the crude and refined petroleum needed to meet the demand for petroleum products within the Atlantic Coast States , reported an increase in 1929 receipts of 2,542,000 barrels of crude petroleum and 13,479,000 barrels of gasoline over the quantities received during the preceding year . The relatively large expansion in gasoline receipts undoubtedly resulted from the unexpected increase in gasoline consumption which characterized the petroleum industry during 1929. Gasoline receipts from California increased 6,354,000 barrels and shipments from foreign countries were 5,381,000 barrels in excess of the 1928 figures , while receipts from Gulf Coast ports , the major source of outside supply, declined 811,000 barrels . Shipments of domestic crude oil by tanker from Gulf Coast ports during 1929 continued the average annual increase of approximately 7,000,000 barrels which has been recorded during the five years of this annual survey . These shipments have increased from 72,556,000 barrels during 1925 to 99,828,000 barrels during 1929. Shioments of Mid- Continent crude by pipe- line to Atlantic Coast refineries have , on the other hand , dropped from 11,903,000 barrels in 1925 to 1,409,000 barrels during 1929. Receipts of foreign crude oil declined 1,461,000 barrels from the preceding year . : Gasoline demand within the Atlantic Coast area reached a total of 123,345,000 barrels , an increase of 15.7 per cent over 1928. Gasoline production increased 4,157,000 barrels , while tanker receipts were nearly 11,000,000 barrels larger than in 1928. Indicated shioments from Appalachian refineries were somewhat larger than in the preceding year . Gasoline production showed an average of 33.5 per cent of the crude throughout , as compared with 31.5 per cent in 1928 and 32.7 per cent in 1927. Cracking operations accounted for 44.6 per cent of the gasoline produced , as compared with 40.6 per cent in 1928 and 35.3 per cent in 1927. Gas oil and fuel oil production averaged 52.8 per cent of the crude throughput , as compared with 55.1 per cent in 1928 and 49.5 per cent in 1927 , the decline reflecting the smaller quantities of foreign crude refined during the year .

Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who work at coal mines and noncoal mines. Companies In 2007, a total of 2,999 contracting companies reported employment at coal mines to MSHA, or 35.7% of all independent contracting companies.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a field test for detecting the presence of columbium in a variety of minerals containing the clement. The test consists of fusing the mineral or rock powder with potassium pyrosulfate in a porcelain crucible, digesting the melt with hot dilute hydrochloric acid to release the columbium oxide (Cb205), and subsequently reducing the columbium oxide to a lower oxide by adding tin, which gives a blue color to the contents of the crucible. The method will detect 1 percent of contained columbium oxide (Cb205) in a mineral sample provided no tungsten is present. If a mineral containing appreciable titanium is test,-!d in the same manner, the solution in the crucible becomes violet. In the presence of columbium, titanium at first causes a violet coloration of the solution, which after a few minutes is masked by the stronger blue of the reduced columbium oxide. Although tantalum oxide (Ta205) does not interfere with the columbium test, tungsten gives a blue color that is indistinguishable from the color obtained with columbium. A simple method is available to detect the presence of columbium in the absence of tungsten, but when the presence of tungsten is suspected, the sample must be subjected to somewhat more elaborate chemical tests to determine the presence or absence of columbium. Although these latter tests can be made in the field, several steps are involved that arc best performed in the laboratory with simple equipment.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a glass containing approximately 17 percent lithia and 83 percent silica to establish a method of devitrifying cast and rolled shapes. Glass shapes with high strength were made by melting, forming, and rapid cooling of the composition, and the shapes subsequently were converted to a crystalline condition by heat treatment. The best devitrification schedule included rapid cooling of the glass to below 300° C, followed by reheating at a rate of 50° to 400° C per hour, depending on the size of the shape, followed by a of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C and another period of 15 hours at 800° C. attempts to use faster heating rates or slow cooling to accomplish devitrification in deformation of the shapes. The crystalline shapes had flexural strengths that averaged over 33,000 psi, achieved with an annealing time of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C.

"An in vitro study of the biologic responses of surface-modified and native silica and kaolin was made to provide comparative information on the supression of cytotoxicity by pulmonary surfactant. The release of alveolar macrophage cytoplasmic enzyme, lactate dehydrogenase (IDH), and lysosomal enzymes B-N-acetylglocosaminidase (B-NAG) and B-ghucuronidase (B-GLUC) and sheep blood-cell hemolysis were moni¬tored as indicators of cell membrane damage and cytutoxicity. Surface modification of silica and kaolin with dipalmitoyl lecithin (UPI) resulted in complete abrogation of cytotoxicity of both minerals. These findings indicate that surface modification of minerals with different adsorption properties by pulmonary surfactant generally lessens their prompt adverse effects.INTRODUCTIONAcute and chronic silicosis are well-characterized clinical and pathologic entities resulting from the inhalation of crystalline silica (Morgan and Seaton, 1984). Kaolin, a layered aluminosilicate clay frequently mined and used in manufacturing, contains tetrahedral silica alternately layered with alumina octahedra. Kaolin is relatively .inert biologically, and distinctly greater pulmonary burdens are seen in patients with kaolinosis than are seen in patients with silicosis. Crystalline siliea (quartz) induces a significantly greater degree of fibrosis in exposed animals in vivo than does kaolin (Hamilton and Hardy, 1974; Parkes, 1982; Hunter, 1976; Sheers, 1964; Warraki and t-lerant, 1963; Lynch and Mciver, 1954; Lapenas et al., 1984).This difference in pulmonary disease associated with the two types of dust is not reflected by in vitro cytotoxicity as Jetermined by pulmonary macrophage bioassays or erythrocyte hemolysis. Cytotoxicity studies using crystalline silica and kaolin of similar size fractions show comparable bioassay response on a mass basis. These cellular bioassays, therefore, do not correlate with the relative in vivo pathogenicity of silicates."

In 2005, a total of 4,490 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Stone mines comprised 30.6% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,039; 45.4%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Of all states, Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=379; 8.4%).

Develop a means for estimating vertical stress conditions in or around an underground mine so that appropriate measures for ground control can be taken before hazardous conditions arise. Background High vertical stress in an underground mine could cause or enhance hazardous ground control conditions which might lead to accidents, fatalities, and loss of reserves. An understanding of the vertical stress conditions at the mining level would allow a mine operator to take precautions that will minimize the occurrence of ground control problems. A knowledge of the underground stress conditions prior to mining could be used as an aid in future mine plan development to avoid or minimize ground control problems. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed a computer program for calculating the vertical stress resulting from the pressure of overlying rock masses on a mine or geologic surface at various depths.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), as part of a comprehensive program to improve mine safety through the widespread acceptance of careful excavation principles in drifting, have revisited standard drift round design concepts. Although the initial emphasis was on contour row design and providing improved design tools for blasting with de-coupled charges, the focus has broadened into the development of a general gas pressure-based drift round design approach. The concept of a damage radius (Rd) for a given explosive-hole-rock mass combination is introduced. With the damage radius as the basic building block, the blast holes are positioned on the face, beginning with the buffer row, to achieve the desired excavation size, shape and smoothness. The design of the contour row of holes is also performed using a pressure-based approach. The paper presents in some detail the overall approach and the required gas pressure-based design equations.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch beneficiation tests on samples from four potential platinum resources in southeastern Alaska to concentrate platinum and other precious metals. Thin Investigation was done as part of the mission of the Bureau to insure an adequate supply of minerals to meet the Nation&apos;s needs. Petrographic studies and beneficiation methods including gravity concentration, froth flotation, and magnetic separation were used to determine mineral association and to attempt to concentrate the platinum values with a primary mineral value such as chromite, copper sulfide, or magnetite. A high-graded sample from the Salt Chuck copper sulfide deposit yielded the platinum-group metal concentrate; the maximum grade attained was 0.04 oz Pt and 1.5 oz Pd per ton of high-grade copper sulfide concentrate. The other samples yielded low-grade primary mineral concentrates with low platinum-group values, and/or the platinum-group metals did not concentrate with the primary mineral value.

"A new record in fuel efficiency at petroleum refineries was achieved in 1935, when an average of only 615,000 B. t. u. was needed to refine a barrel of crude oil, compared with an average of 638,000 B. t. u. in 1934 and 829,000 B. t. u. In 1925. (See fig. 1.)Refiners have made almost uninterrupted progress in firing efficiency during the last decade although much of this gain was brought about by improved technique and greater use of heat exchangers and pipe stills, the determining factor was the trend in crude runs to stills. Most plants can increase their crude throughput materially with but small increase in fuel consumption. Consequently, in years in which crude runs have increased substantially, average requirements have declined; but in years in which crude runs have decreased, the average has tended upward. This conclusion is confirmed by figure 1, which shows that there has been but one minor exception to this rule in the last 10 years.Technical progress in fuel efficiency may be illustrated by comparing crude runs and total B. t, u. consumed. Between 1925 and 1935 crude runs to stills increased 31 percent, but the total quantity of heat required did not increase; in fact, it declined slightly.The trend of modern still construction is from shell stills, in which a large body of oil is heated, to tube stills, in which the heat comes into much closer contact with the oil. In 1935 the total capacity of operating pipe stills increased about 4 percent; this increase, though small, probably was related to the gain in average efficiency.The Increased use of heat exchangers and their role as fuel savers have been discussed in previous reports of this series. It is sufficient to say that refiners with insufficient exchange capacity added as much in 1935 as their budgets would permit."

"Churn drills for blast-hole drilling are important to the operation of most open-pit metal mines, but certain hazards are created through their use that cause fatal and nonfatal accidents.2/ The purpose of this circular is to present a code of safe practice prepared and followed at a large Arizona open-pit copper mine, where safety is recognized as a definite operating problem. Such a code, based upon a thorough study of available published information as well as practical experience gained from accidents and near accidents, is the result of considerable effort and monetary expenditure. It is hoped that other operations using churn drills may benefit by the code presented, either in comparison with existing rules or in the preparation of new operating instructions.The code presented is in use at the Morenci Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corn., Morenci, Ariz. Similar codes are used at the New Cornelia Branch, Ajo, Ariz., and in the waste-pit operation at the United Verde Branch, Jerome, Ariz.The authors gratefully acknowledge the cooperation of the Phelps Dodge Corp., whose personnel made: possible the collection of information included in this circular. Larsen, general drilling and blasting foreman, Morenci Branch, Morenci, Ariz.The importance of churn drills in Arizona mining is apparent when it is realized that at all the open-pit copper mines blast holes are drilled with this equipment. At Morenci, approximately 98 percent of the ground is broken by primary blasting of churn-drill holes.There has been a growing tendency in Arizona's copper-mining industry to change from underground to open-pit mining, with consequent increase in the use of churn-drill blast holes for primary blasting.3/Thirty-three churn drills are in use at Morenci for blast-hole drilling. The drills operate with 440-volt alternating current, and trailing drill cables, in 500-foot sections, connect with the portable drill transformer station.4/ Three Diesel-driven churn drills for drilling prospect holes also are in use. About 25 churn-drill shifts are operated currently on a three-shift basis. Ordinarily, a two-man crew is assigned to each drill; however, with prospect-drill crews a third man is added to handle the sampling.Benches are carried at a uniform height of 50 feet. Churn-drill holes are 9 or 12 inches in diameter and about 60 feet deep. The holes are 18 feet apart in hard waste and 21 feet in soft waste and ore, with toes from 11 to 13 yards at the shovel grade. Both the hole spacing and the toe have been increased gradually, until they are now 2 yards longer than in 1940. The average ground broken per hole is 3,500 tons, or 60 tons of ore per foot of hole drilled. The holes are drilled 10 feet below the bench to avoid leaving hard bottom, which requires secondary drilling and blasting.Starting with a 12-inch casing, the prospect holes average 1,200 to 1,500 feet in depth and terminate with 6-inch casing; the deepest hole drilled to date went to 1,735 feet.In addition, churn-drills are used at Morenci to drill blast holes in the silica pit, limestone quarry, and the tailings dam. Other irregular applications are the drilling of holes to set trolley roles and for concrete piling in building foundations."

As part of its effort to produce cell-grade alumina from clay, the Bureau of Mines investigated the hydrogen chloride gas-sparging crystallization of aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH) from aluminum chloride liquor, to provide information for optimizing the crystallization operation. Four parameters important in controlling the crystallization of the aluminum chloride hexahydrate and the concentration of impurities, particularly phosphorus and magnesium, in ACH crystals are (1) aluminum chloride concentration in the feed solution to crystallization, (2) hydrogen chloride gas flow rate, (3) temperature, and (4) concentration of phosphorus and magnesium also in the feed solution. Parameters 1, 2, and 3 affect crystal formation. The combined effects are very important because the phosphorus and magnesium concentrate in the crystals during the early stages of crystal growth. Aluminum chloride hexahydrate of cell-grade purity was crystallized from saturated aluminum chloride solutions containing less than 0.003 wt-pct P205 and 0.010 wt-pct MgO. Crystallization temperatures less than 600 C decreased crystal purity.
