The heat content above 298.15° K was determined for crystalline vanadium silicide of the composition V3Si. This substance has a minor thermal anomaly (probably a heat-capacity maximum) near 560° K; the extra heat absorption is about 50 cal/mole. The original heat-content data are presented, and smooth values of the heat content and the corresponding entropy increments are listed for the temperature range from 298.15° to 1,500° K. Equations representing the heat- content values and derived heat capacities are also included.

A mineral survey of a 12,350-acre portion of the 13,150-acre Juniper Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in southwestern Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1984. The area is entirely underlain by thick flows of Banbury Basalt. Rhyolitic tuff of Little Jacks Creek is exposed in the walls of the Owyhee River canyon beneath the basalt. Minor units of lacustrine sediment occur between the volcanic layers. No mines or claims occur in the area, and no mineralized zones were found. The study area is covered by oil and gas leases or lease applications; there has been no known exploration.

The Bureau of Mines developed a rapid instrumental method of analyzing oil well scales containing primarily barium sulfate. After removal of oil and water by carbon disulfide) the scale was dissolved in strong hydrochloric acid. The cations, barium, calcium, strontium, magnesium, and iron, were determined with the flame photometer using the method of additions. Sulfate was deter-mined colorimetrically after separation by selective adsorption on an alumina column. Phosphate was determined colorimetrically and carbonate titrimetrically. The method was reasonably accurate, although iron and magnesium were found to have mutual interference.

As part of an ongoing program to develop high-quality materials with improved performance and service lives, and to conserve critical minerals, Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, researchers studied the process of hot-rolling metals, alloys, and composites in vacuum. First, a comprehensive review of the literature is presented, including the advantages and disadvantages of using vacuum. Next, details of hot-rolling titanium, chromium, and molybdenum-iron bimetal are given. Finally, the design of new equipment is described. At this time, it is uncertain whether hot-rolling metals in vacuum will gain commercial acceptance in the future.

"INTRODUCTION .As part of its spot drilling program, the Bureau of Mines core-drilled seven holes on the Alexander and Barber properties in Spartanburg County, S. C.Extensive surface float and outcrops of sillimanite schist on these properties appeared to justify drilling, which did not prove satisfactory, however, owing to the spotty occurrence of the schist bodies and the poor core recovery in the decomposed schist.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The farm house on the property is 0.4 mile north on this road. The sillimanite outcrop is in a field approximately 1,200 feet east of the farm house. The Barber property is about 2 miles north along the unsurfaced road that passes the Alexander property."

Purchasing a new set of longwall shields requires a substantial investment. A poor shield design can lead to economic hardships, safety concerns for the mine workers, and closure of the mine. This paper addresses several key points that should be considered in the procurement process: (1) understanding your goals and the logic in selecting a higher capacity shield, (2) the importance of completing performance testing before production shield fabrication begins, (3) making sure performance testing is properly done, (4) measuring load(stress) development during performance testing, (5) testing a shield to failure, and (6) the value of buying extra shields. In addition, several challenges are proposed for consideration in future shield designs. These include (1) 100,000 life-cycle expectancy, (2) improved hydraulic diagnostic capability, (3) smart load control by optimizing setting pressures, (4) lubricated link joint design concepts, (5) composite material applications to reduce shield weight, (6) incorporating periodic weighting predictive algorithms into the data-processing software, (7) advanced component load measurement on two to three specially instrumented shields to detect loading in the structural components, and (8) constant set leg cylinder design.

"INTRODUCTION The operation of internal-combustion engines at high altitudes and the general aspects of combustion processes in rarefied atmospheres have created considerable interest in the problem of ignition and flame propagation at low pressures. Nuckolls, Matson, and Dufour 4/ have published results on the effect of low pressures on the propagation of flame in gasoline vapor-air mixtures in vessels of large capacity. The volumes of their test equipment varied in capacity from 0.425 to 125 cubic feet. Various sources of ignition were employed. These authors found that the explosive range of gasoline vapor in air decreases with decreasing pressure at pressures considerably below atmospheric, until a limiting absolute pressure of about 33 mm. mercury at ordinary temperature is reached, at which point no appreciable flame is propagated.Experiments carried out at the Bureau with natural gas-air mixtures at reduced pressures have shown 5/ that the limits of inflammability are but little affected at reduced pressures down to 175 mm. mercury. As the pressures of natural gas-air mixtures are reduced below atmospheric, the mixtures become more difficult to ignite; however, if a suitable source of ignition is employed, the limits of inflammability are as wide at 175 mm. mercury absolute pressure as they are at atmospheric pressure. In view of these observations with natural gas-air mixtures, it appears important to investigate gasoline vapor-air mixtures for possible similar behavior. For this reason the tests herein described were carried-out."

Electrical characteristics of positive corona are presented for air in a 2 - in - diam electrostatic precipitator operating under dynamic conditions at temperatures of 600 ° to 1,500 ° F and pressures of 0 to 80 psig . Results show that current - voltage relationships depend solely on air density . Comparison of data on positive corona with previously published data on negative corona demonstrates a higher sparkover voltage and a wider range of operability for positive corona at temperatures above 375 ° F. The possibility of achieving higher voltages with positive polarity as indicated by these experiments implies several advantages for the use of positive corona in precipitators to allow better removal of suspended material from hot gases . Based on the physics of an ion in an electrical field , a theoretical equation is derived to define current - voltage characteristics of positive corona in terms of air density . Constants for the equation are evaluated from Calculated current - voltage values at different air densities agree reasonably well with experimental data .

As part of a program to devise alternative technologies for producing alumina from domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated the leaching of calcined kaolinitic clay to form basic aluminum chloride solutions. Bench-scale experiments were conducted for single-stage batch leaching with AICl3 solution and three-stage countercurrent leaching with substoichiometric HCI. As part of a Bureau of Mines program to investigate recovery of manganese (Mn) from low-grade materials, laboratory studies were made of four samples of mill rejects: Three from Montana and one from Peru. These studies demonstrated that certain mill-waste products can be a potential source of manganese. Both manganese oxide and carbonate minerals were recovered by flotation in an acid circuit with a fuel oil-tall oil emulsion as collector. Sintering) required to prepare a physically acceptable product, also was used as a method of beneficiation. In addition to being low-grade, some of the samples presented problems of intimate mineral association and complex textures.

As part of its program to lessen dependence on foreign bauxite as the Nation's primary source of cell-grade alumina, the Bureau of Mines is investigating sulfuric acid (H2S04) leaching procedures for the recovery of alumina from domestic aluminous materials. The successful application of a H2S04 leaching process depends on the recovery of the aluminum values in an easily washed and filtered form, containing a minimum of water to be driven off in the subsequent calcination step. This goal was met by the high-temperature hydrolysis of simulated aluminum sulfate [A12(S04)3] leach liquor. Crystalline, insoluble aluminum hydroxy sulfate [A1(OH)S04], which had a water-to-alumina mole ratio of 1:1, was produced. Eighty-six percent of a solution containing 127 g of A12(S04)3 per liter and 76 pct of a solution containing 336 g of A12(S04)3 per liter were hydrolyzed to insoluble aluminum hydroxy sulfate by autoclaving for 1 hr at 320° C and rapidly quenching to room temperature. Higher operating temperatures were precluded by corrosion of the autoclave. The yield of aluminum in the hydrolysis product increased with increasing hydrolysis temperature and decreasing A12(S04)3 concentration.

The solubility of UO2 was determined at 1,250° C. in ternary melts of UF4 and BaF2 with CaF2, LiF, and SrF2. The solubility of Ce02 was measured at 800° and 850° C. in a solution of CeF3, BaF2, and LiF. The amount of La203 which dissolves at 950° C. in a binary mixture of LiF and LaF3 and a ternary of LiF, LaF3, and BaF2 was also measured. In each case, the amount of soluble oxide was mound to be less than 5 weight-percent. A procedure was developed for filtering fused, oxide-saturated fluoride melts in order to obtain a representative sample for chemical analysis. The oxide content of the samples was determined by an inert-gas fusion procedure.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the application of a spark-source mass spectrograph equipped with a spinning-electrode system for the study of various high-molecular-weight materials derived from coal. Conclusions from the investigation of anthracene, phenanthrene, chrysene, coronene, truxene, a coal-tar pitch (800 to 850 C softening point), and anthracene-chrysene synthetic mixtures follow: 1. Simplified mass spectra of anthracene, phenanthrene, chrysene, coronene, and truxene, from which the molecular weights were easily determined, were obtained by the spinning-electrode system. 2. Eight structural types having molecular weights from 178 to 252 corresponding to compounds previously observed in an electron impact mass spectrum of a coal-tar pitch sample were affirmed by this technique. 3. Mass spectra obtained from synthetic mixtures of anthracene and chrysene demonstrated that the technique is applicable for semiquantitative analysis.

The economic value of reducing the evaporation losses of crude oil and of gasoline is so well founded that the petroleum industry is constantly seeking new and improved storage tanks and methods of handling its products to further reduce these losses. A comparison of the methods and apparatus used in handling and storing crude oil and its products today with those in general use 10 years ago would show that an oil tank is no longer simply a container for holding liquid, but is now considered an important piece of equipment which if, subjected to constant inspection and care. In fact, the modern vapor-tight tank often requires as much care as a boiler or pump when one considers Its various component parts such as vapor-tight gage hatches and thief-hole covers, vacuum and pressure relief valves, swing line apparatus, vapor-recovery systems, insulation, cooling devices, and often automatic gaging devices. As an auxiliary to the physical equipment of the tank itself the subject of paints and paint colors is now given considerable attention. In addition to vapor-tight tanks and auxiliary equipment, other types of tanks for reducing, evaporation which are new to the industry have also been developed and placed on the market within the past few years. The development of the floating roof type was an innovation in tank construction, directed toward the reducing of evaporation losses. This type of roof rides on the surface of the oil and thus eliminates all vapor space. It is especially valuable for working tanks.3 A recent development in tank construction is a new type of tank roof known as the diaphragm or "breather roof," Which practically eliminates the movement of air-vapor mixture from a storage tank filled with oil. It is of especial value for use on tanks in which oil is stored over long periods.

Helium shipments for 1965 exceeded the volume shipped during the previous year for the 16th successive time. Shipments from Bureau of Mines helium plants were 698.6 million cubic feet, 2 about 4.7 percent more than in 1964. Production at Bureau of Mines plants totaled 757.4 million cubic feet, and an additional 3,549.6 million cubic feet was produced by private companies participating in the helium conservation program and purchased by the Bureau of Mines and stored underground for future use. The Bureau of Mines continued to sell helium at $35 per thousand cubic feet, the price established in 1961. Production and sales of helium increased from the one private plant operating entirely outside the Government's helium program. A second private plant was virtually complete at yearend, although actual production had not commenced.

Batch and continuous - circuit flotation , leaching , precipitation , and electrodeposition studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions for treatment of complex mercury - antimony sulfide and mercury- arsenic sulfide ores and concentrates . On the Red Devil ore sample over 95 percent of both the mercury and antimony sulfides were recovered in a flotation concentrate containing 35.6 percent mercury and 21.0 percent antimony . By selective flotation a mercury concentrate containing 71.0 percent mercury and 2.9 percent antimony was obtained with a mercury recovery of 90.4 percent . Leaching results show that , with 150 grams per liter of sodium sulfide and 50 grams per liter of sodium hydroxide , 95 to 99 percent of the mercury , antimony , and arsenic sulfides could be extracted from the concentrates treated . Sodium hydroxide reagent consumption was based on the sulfides generated in the dissolution of the sulfide minerals and on the method of metal recovery used . Selective leaching of the antimony and arsenic sulfides with potassium sulfide dissolved more than 95 percent of either of these two sulfides and 0.5 to 5 percent of the mercury sulfide present . Methods for recovering mercury and antimony from solution were electrodeposition of mercury followed by electrodeposition of antimony , aluminum precipitation of both mercury and antimony , or antimony precipitation of mercury followed by antimony electrodeposition . The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an in-house facility to evaluate selected effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) levels experienced by underground mobile equipment operators, Vertical vibration data were collected from a coal haulage vehicle via a uniaxial accelerometer attached to the machine frame under the operator&apos;s seat. Data were analyzed and processed so a computer-controlled platform could approximate the vibration signals. Eight men (35.5 yr 2 6.5 SD) participated in a pilot study to evaluate the effects of shock and kBV on heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and subjective discomfort. Subjects were exposed to vibration for 30-min periods while seated in a typical seat (backrest angle at 90° or 130°) &apos;that was plain steel or modified with 2 in foam padding. Subjects repeated the same protocol on a separate day, without the vibration. Results indicated the vibration significantly increased the HR (Q< 0.01), systolic BP, mean BP, the number of times subjects reported discomfort, and overall subjective discomfort rating (pc 0.85). When seated in the steel seat, the overall discomfort rating (E< 0,081) ad the number of times discomfort was reported (p< 0.05) increased significantly. Seatback angle had no significant effect on any of the dependent measures.

Over the past two decades, there have been significant reductions in industrial exposures to hand-arm vibration, especially when specific tools and work processes have been redesigned to incorporate anti-vibration and ergonomic principles. Nevertheless, Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) remains a significant occupational health problem as disease symptoms continue to occur even when vibration exposure levels believed to incur low risks have been reached2. This inconsistency may be related to the methodology that is typically used to estimate workday vibration exposure levels, involving laboratory and/or very short duration field measurements coupled with estimates of overall eight-hour tool operation times determined from brief observations of tool tasks and/or self-reported surveys. One solution is to use small, commercially-available, personal vibration dosimeters to calculate, record, and display long-duration vector sums and energy equivalents of vibration. However, since these devices are attached to the worker and require tool-mounted accelerometers, they are incompatible with the worker performing normal duties involving putting down or changing tools. In addition, these commercial systems do not allow for the characterization of the transmission of vibration to the hand such as monitoring the mechanical coupling between the hand and the tool handle (e.g., grip forces). O’Boyle and Griffin showed that variations in applied force can alter vibration transmission characteristics by 50% or more indicating that the measurement of grip force is essential for modeling vibration transmissibility and vibration exposures5. In summary, a need exists for the development of a method and device that will more accurately characterize workday-long vibration exposures. Methods A portable, light-weight, Vibration Exposure Monitor (VEM) system was developed to record user-specific tool-operating times, vibrations, and grip forces throughout all, or a representative part, of a workday. It monitors frequency weighted and unweighted accelerations from a palm-mounted uni-axial accelerometer (Model 352C22, PCB Piezotronics, Depew, NY) and calculates exposure levels using the root-mean-square (RMS) and higher power mean values, such as the root-mean-quad (RMQ) and the root-mean-oct (RMO). Grip forces are also monitored using a palm-mounted force sensor (Model 400, Interlink Electronics, Camarillo, CA) from which average grip force levels and exerted grip extrema are calculated. At the core of the VEM system is a commercially available, battery-powered microcomputer (Tattletale, Model 8v2, Onset Computer, Onset, MA) with one megabyte of memory and eight analog channels using 12-bit sampling at a single-channel maximum of 100 kHz. Analog signal processing (i.e., anti-aliasing, with cutoffs at 4 and 1250 Hz, and ISO 5349-13 frequency weighting) is accomplished using custom circuitry that is directly interfaced with the microcomputer. To compare the viability of the new fuse wire arc test (FWAT) as a substitute for the comparative tracking index (CTI) for determining surface resistance to electrical tracking, the Bureau of Mines constructed a fuse wire arc tester and undertook a detailed testing program for testing insulating materials used on explosion-proof enclosures. This report describes the Bureau&apos;s apparatus, the two methods (CTI and FWAT), and the results of the Bureau&apos;s testing, showing comparisons of the FWAT with the CTI. Results showed strong correlation between the two methods, as all specimens tested that had CTI ratings of 400 V ac rms and above passed the 10-test sequence with the FWAT, whereas all specimens with lower CTI ratings failed, with the number of tests to failure corresponding roughly to the descending CTI rating order.

"The Keely mine at Dagger, Indiana, is one of the few mines that is being operated successfully on a cooperative basis. This shaft mine is developing 133 acres of coal in the Indiana No. 6 bed, which here averages 5-1/2 feet thick and. lies about 110 feet below the surface. Thirty seven (37) miners and twenty (20) company men or day man are employed, and the daily output is around 300 tons. Practically the entire production is sold by contract for railroad use. No mining machines are used and all coal is produced by pick work.The mine was originally owned and operated by the Stockton Coal. Co. of Dugger, but about eight years ago it was leased to Mr. Roy Price. He sub-leased the property to ten miners, who formed an association known as the Dugger Mutual Coal and Mining Co., to work the mine cooperatively.At first many difficulties were encountered; the cooperative idea is an old one, but the practice was new to those interested. Some of the men were energetic, ambitious workers; others were inclined to let their associates produce the coal but wanted to share in the profits. In time, after a hard struggle and many changes in the personnel of the company, business-like methods were adopted and the mine was put on a paying basis."
