"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. A laboratory method for processing lead battery scrap has been developed that eliminates virtually all of the S02 emission that normally is produced when a reverberatory or blast furnace is used. The method employs a hydrometallurgical step to convert the PbS04 to PbO and CaS04 by mixing the battery scrap with a slurry of Ca(OH)2. The reaction is exothermic and goes to completion in 2 to 5 minutes at room temperature. The dried product is mixed with a KC1-NaC1 flux and carbon and reduced at 6500 C. A minimum charge ratio of 3 parts of carbon to 100 parts of battery scrap is required for reduction. The process produces lead reductions and recoveries as high as 97.0 and 94.9 percent, respectively. The KCI-NaCl flux is recovered using a standard counter-current water leach followed by evaporation.

"Domestic Situation:The greatly increased use of lithopone as a base for paints, particularly for interior use, has timulated the demand for barytes to such a degree that the supply cannot keep pace with the demand. Lithopone is an artificially prepared compound composed of about 70 per cent barium sulphate and 30 per cent zinc sulphide, precipitated together. Its most important use is in paint, but it is also used in oilcloth, linoleum, rubber goods, shade cloth, etc.Prior to the war large quantities of barytes were imported from Germany, but during the war imports were negligible, domestic production increased very greatly and is still increasing. Ground barytes as used in paints/ formerly regarded as an adulterant, but now it is generally recognized as a valuable paint constituent. Mile domestic sources have expanded rapidly they have not overtaken the demand and there is need for still greater expansion. Stocks are low, little is being sold on the open market, and prices are high. Since barytes is a gangue mineral associated with metallic ores now being mined in the west, it is suggested that more attention be given to its recovery as a by-product.The following tables compiled from reports of the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, indicate the growth of domestic consumption."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the sequence of principal chemical reactions taking place during the roasting of covellite (CuS). Practically all covellite is converted to digenite (Cul.SS) before oxidation to Cu20 begins. Part of the Cu2O is then converted to CuO, which in turn forms CuS04 through CuO?CuS04 as an intermediary. CuS04 and CuO'CuS04 decompose at 600° to 700° C to yield CuO and S03 (g) as final products. An overall mechanism is proposed for chemical reactions occurring at different interfaces of partially oxidized CuS pellets.

Laboratory batch and small - scale continuous flotation tests were conducted on a ferruginous barite - fluorspar ore from near Sweetwater , Tenn . , to determine the feasibility of producing commercial - grade fluorspar and barite concentrates . The lignin sulfonate - sodium fluoride - fatty acid method of floating fluorspar produced acid - grade concentrates . Flotation of the barite from the fluorspar tailing using petroleum sulfonate yielded concentrates suitable for use as a weighting agent in oil -well drilling muds . The continuous flotation tests , treating about 150 pounds of ore per hour , yielded fluorspar concentrates that assayed 98.3 percent CaF2 and barite concentrates that assayed 91.2 percent BaSO4 . The recovery of the two minerals was 91.2 and 85.2 percent , respectively .

The Bureau of Mines studied factors affecting ignition of coal mine refuse and on methods for control of burning. Laboratory experiments showed that air permeates more readily through segregated than through nonsegregated refuse and that air permeability is greater through coarse than through fine particle refuse. Minus 3-1/4-inch refuse ignites spontaneously more readily than minus 1/4-inch refuse. The burning of a 1,000-pound conical coal pile was con-trolled by capping with an 18-inch-thick layer of minus 1/4-inch refuse containing 37 percent combustible. In field trials, the burning of refuse at operating mines was controlled by capping with a layer of fine refuse. Water, applied as a spray or by injection, quenched surface flames and cooled the burning waste. Inspection of refuse piles at operating mines showed that the spontaneous ignition tendency is affected by the exposed surface relative to the total volume and the segregation of particles during dumping.

[The Bureau of Mines initiated an extensive research on coal-mine ventilation factors in 1922, large- scale tests being conducted in its experimental nine near Bruceton, Pa., over a period of two years. A comprehensive report an this work is in course of preparation, but in order to place the practical results before the mining fraternity immediately and in condenses form, the more important features will be presented in a number of short papers. The present report is the first of a series dealing with the resistance of coal-mine entries to the flow of air and considers only entries in which there are no obstructions other than the natural roughness of the ribs, roof, and floor.]

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring the latter part of 1943 a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahepac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by ""pinching"" or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance the original ore body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. The Mahopac mine was visited by W.T. Millar, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 5, 1943, accompanied by Dr. William Agar of the Federal Survey, and again on July 29, 1943, accompanied by Dr. A. F. Buddington and H.F. Hawkes, both of the Geological Survey.The mineral investigation was under the general supervision of Paul M. Tyler, formerly regional engineer, Eastern Region; J. D. After a long series of laboratory and in-mine tests, a cost- effective, mineworthy, reduced-noise auger miner cutting head was de signed, fabricated, and field-tested by Wyle Laboratories under contract to the Bureau of Mines. Compared with standard auger cutting heads, the new heads reduced noise by 10 dBA at the jacksetter's position and by 6 dBA at the operator's position. This report contains detailed fabrication instructions, including engineering drawings, that show how a standard auger cutting head can be modified to produce a reduced-noise auger.

This report abstracts project work performed under USBM Grant GO155003 during the period 4 November 1975 to 3 November 1976. The research was funded, as a continuance of previous support from USBM Grants GO133077 and G0155003, to gain further knowledge in mine electrical system safety. Five reports have been separately produced, all under the grant title, "Coal Mine Electrical System Evaluation," and are as follows: 1. Volume I - Continuous Monitoring, 2. Volume II - Transient Analysis, 3. Volume III - Shielded Cables, 4. Volume IV - Computer Modeling, and 5. Volume V - Battery and Battery-charging Safety. Abstracts of these comprise the balance of this document with one exception. The task ?d-c offsett currents," does not fall under the scope of the other report volumes and, further, the material to be presented does not justify a separate report. Hence, this subject concludes the Executive Summary.

"This publication is a progress report on Bureau of Mines studies in applying sonar techniques to roof-control problems in coal mines. Preliminary tests in the laboratory were made on layers of roof rock. To apply the experience thus obtained, a unit was designed and constructed and was used underground.The term ""sonar technique"" refers to the system of generating a beam of sound waves, shaping and directing the beam, introducing the beam into a medium to be studied, and examining any returning waves with a view of inferring the nature of the material traversed by the waves and the presence of interfaces or obstacles in the medium.The theory and actual underground experiments indicate that the sonic method is feasible. Information from physical tests made in the Bureau's Experimental mine confirmed the validity and potential usefulness of the sonar method. Lighter and more compact apparatus is desirable, and permissible equipment suitable for use in gassy or dusty mines must be developed. However, no particular difficulties are anticipated; consequently, this scientific approach to the exploration of roof strata shows definite promise. INTRODUCTIONThe problem of roof control in the coal-mining industry is of major importance. More than 50 percent of all coal-mine fatalities and 25 percent of all nonfatal serious injuries are caused by falls of roof, face, or ribs. The Bureau estimates that more than $128 million was spent by the coal-mining industry in 1958 for supporting roof."

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Upper Free-port coalbed was studied in Fayette County, Pa., where this coalbed lies about 650 feet below the Pittsburgh coalbed and contains the largest remaining reserves of any coalbed in the county. Coal and overburden isopachs, structure and joint pattern maps, and a fence diagram were prepared using data from gas and oil exploration logs and coal outcrops. These maps will aid in deter-mining the need and/or feasibility of degasifying the Upper Freeport coalbed in the study area. Much of the coalbed in this area is under 600 to 1,400 feet of overburden. By correlation with data from the Pittsburgh coalbed, the gas content at depths of this order is estimated to be between 140 to 300 cf/ ton of coal, for a total of 190 to 400 billion cubic feet of methane in this coalbed in Fayette County.

The objective of the research reported in this publication of the Federal Bureau of Mines was to devise a mineral dressing procedure that would concentrate zinc silicate minerals from certain deposits in southwestern Missouri. The best flotation results were obtained by batch laboratory flotation using sulfidizing agents and ethoxylated cocoamine. The flotation concentrate contained 70 percent of the zinc at a grade of 47.8 percent. Gravity concentration tests showed that 55 percent of the zinc could be recovered at a grade of 48.3 percent.

In order to help assure an adequate domestic supply of minerals essential to the Nation's economy and and security by developing more efficient minerals extraction technologies, the Bureau of Mines Tuscaloosa Research Center examined the application of autogenous microgrinding to calcium carbonate minerals. Treatment of minus 8-mesh Alabama marble resulted in a product 80 pct minus 5 micrometers (µm) at a power consumption of 70 to 80 kwhr/ton, This study shows that coarse particles of calcium carbonate minerals are effective as the grinding media for the autogenous attrition grinding of these minerals. The minus 8- plus 30-mesh fraction is an effective grinding medium (sand) for particles smaller than 30 mesh. A 40-pct-solids slurry and a sand: marble ratio of 2.5 appeared to be near optimum. For residence times above 13 minutes, products were greater than 80 pet minus 5 µm and greater than 54 pct minus 2 µm. Power consumption was uniformly low, ranging from 50 to 100 kwhr/ton of product depending upon the feed rate. One marble sample from Georgia was shown to be the most persistent grinding medium, with losses of less than half those of the other materials tested.

The Bureau of Mines developed a process using amines for recovering tungsten as ammonium paratungstate from alkaline leach liquors without producing synthetic scheelite as an intermediate product. Over 90 pct of the tungsten in low-grade scheelite or ferberite concen-trate was recovered as ammonium paratungstate by (l) autoclave leaching the concentrate with Na2CO3, (2) solvent extraction of the acidified leach liquor with kerosine solutions of either a quaternary amine (Aliquat 336) or a primary amine (Primene JM-T), (3) stripping the tungsten values from the quaternary amine with ammoniacal NH4C1 or from the primary amine with NH4OH, and (4) crystallization of ammonium paratungstate from the strip liquor. Reagent consumption in pounds per pound of W03 recovered was, for the quater¬nary amine, 3 Na2CO3, 3.5 H2SO4 , 2.2 NH4Cl, 1 NH3, and 0.4 glacial acetic acid; for the primary amine, it was 3 Na2CO3, 3.5 H2SO4, .06 NH4Cl, and 0.9 NH3. Both reagents extract molybdenum along with tungsten. Silicate and phosphate are partly extracted and contaminate the product; leach liquors containing these impurities require preliminary purification.

Author and subject indexes were developed, becoming more detailed with each new edition. This present list supersedes the ones compiled in 1949, 1952, and 1957, and several supplements, which were aside available to the public by the Library Of the Bureau?s Bartlesville Petroleum Research Center. The unofficial field publication came to be widely known nail in considerable demand by those who are primarily interested in the Bureau's publications on petroleum and natural gas so that it became, desirable to have it published as an Information Circular. It is hoped drat, this official publications will result in a wider and more effective use of the Bureau's research results which are reported in its publications.

Beryllium occurs in the Honeycomb Hills area in volcanic tuff similar to the more extensive berylliferous tuff occurring 20 miles east at Spor Mountain , Juab County , Utah . Samples from the two areas have been mineralogically examined to ascertain whether they have similar characteristics . The Honeycomb Hills samples showed the presence of beta- Be ( OH ) 2 , as well as an amorphous berylliferous substance , whereas in the Spor Mountain tuff the beryllium- bearing minerals are hydrated bertrandite and berylliferous saponite .

An instrument that is sensitive , portable , safe , and low in cost was developed by the Bureau of Mines for detecting helium leaks by comparing the thermal conductivity and flow rate of the atmosphere around the suspected leak against a reference of helium- free air . A vacuum pump pulls the sample gas through a restriction and over thermistor elements , the combined electrical output of which is affected by thermal conductivity and flow rate of the sample gas . Tests showed that the battery - operated Helium Leak Detector was effective and rugged instrument that could be operated safely in explosive atmospheres . The instrument could also detect , but not identify , other gases such as methane , hydrogen , argon , carbon dioxide , and Freon 12 .
