In a study of the principal factors affecting the transport of coal-water mixtures through a centrifugal pump and a pipeline, the interrelation between solids concentration, velocity, and pressure drop was established for a bituminous lump coal (minus 2 inch) in concentrations up to 48 weight-percent. An optimum concentration was found to exist for maximum capacity of a given pipe-line, and for minimum energy requirements per ton of coal. Coal size degradation by particle fracture took place in the pump; abrasion and attrition to form fines took place in both pump and line. A novel system of studying flow of solid-liquid mixtures in pipelines by the determination of relative sound intensities was developed.

This paper , which describes the mining methods and practices at the Hayden Creek lead mine of St. Joseph Lead Co. in southeast Missouri , is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . The Hayden Creek mine is in the W 1/2 sec . 7 , T. 36 N. , R. 4 E. , St. Francois County , Mo. , about 1 mile southwest of the town of Frankclay ( fig . 1) . The mine is on the west edge of the mining district known as the Lead Belt . However , neither the ore body nor the underground workings are connected with those of any other mine in the district . In contrast with most operations in the district , underground haulage is entirely trackless , and nearly complete delineation of the large , well -defined ore body by drilling permitted comprehensive planning of development and mining in advance of shaft sinking . The ore differs in character and occurrence from that of the main ore deposits in the Lead Belt in that the lead mineral , galena , occurs in the dolomitic matrix enclosing granite boulders instead of in dolomite limestone .

"The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (ii) the amount of quartz in the samples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls arc necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples.In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.The current methods used for quartz analysis in powders are the P-7 infrared spectrometry and quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Both have similar restrictions concerning the sample characteristics and operational problems, which arc intrinsic to radiation beams, device geometry, mechanics and controls of the radiation behavior. Although improvements can be made in the spectrometers and diffractometers, some of the most important steps are the procedures for analysis sample preparation from bulk samples and for calibration of the instruments. The sample preparation process is often referred to as one of grinding and sizing the bulk sample to generate the powder for the scanning devices. The particle sizes are referred to and their influence emphasized but the representativeness of the sample is assumed. Assuring sample representativeness during the sample preparation procedures is critical.For the sampling of airborne respirable dust in coal mines, the collection devices, the collection procedures and the analysis procedures are defined. This is not true for bulk samples where weights must be reduced thousands of times to generate the analysis samples for the scanning devices. The specifications to be developed may include bulk sample amount, sample reduction procedures, sample particle size distribution and sample amounts. However, the common problem of insufficient sample amount which is often encountered with mine airborne dust samples need not exist for bulk samples. Further, the same bulk sample can yield analysis samples for several experiments. The latter, of course, requires sample homogeneity.Three concepts are important in the selection of any procedure for sample preparation and analysis. These arc accuracy, reproducibility and representativeness. The adopted procedure has to guarantee a homogeneous sample representative of the population, a defined level of accuracy and reproducibility. Important statistical concepts are embedded in these requirements, particularly with respect to estimation and dispersion errors. Accuracy and reproducibility are totally different though not independent concepts. Estimation is related to accuracy and the true value. Dispersion is related to reproducibility and is measured by the classical statistical standard deviation of the distribution of a series of measurements or analysis performed over the same lot or analysis sample. Air quantity-pressure and methane concentration surveys were conducted by the Bureau of Mines in accessible portions of an area being pillared in a Pittsburgh coalbed mine in West Virginia. These included two mined-out and three active butt headings and a bleeder system. The particular mine workings were started in virgin coal directly from a set of main headings; the main reason for the study was the difficulty usually encountered in adequately bleeding the gobs under such conditions. Although the two separate return airways in each active butt heading and the North and 1 Left bleeders contained acceptable methane concentrations (0.01 to 0.78 percent in the butts and 0.73 to 1.0 percent in the bleeders) with significant total methane removal (109 cfm in butts and 631 cfm in bleeders), there were relatively large areas in the gobs with possible minimal airflows. This condition appears to have developed from lack of systematic regulation of the airflow across the gobs and appears to indicate the existence of considerably more methane in the probably low flow areas in the gob.

This report describes laboratory studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the effectiveness of 10 additives to inhibit the self-heating of coal. Aqueous additive solutions were applied to a bituminous coal with a high spontaneous combustion potential, and the minimum self-heating temperatures (SHT's) of the dried coal-additive mixtures were determined in the Bureau's adiabatic heating oven. The relative effectiveness of the additives was determined by the observed changes in the minimum SHT's of the mixtures, or by the time required for the sample temperature to reach 150" C, compared with the untreated coal and a coal-water blank. Sodium nitrate, sodium chloride, and calcium carbonate were found to be the most effective inhibitors, followed by ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, calcium chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium acetate, and potassium chloride. Two additives, sodium formate and sodium phosphate, promoted the self-heating process. Differential scanning calorimetry experiments on the coal-additive mixtures showed that reactions occurred between the coal and some of the additives, but these reactions did not influence the self-heating process.

The Bureau of Mines extended its investigation of methanation catalysts. The noble metals (platinum, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium, osmium) and rhenium), molybdenum, and tungsten were tested in hydrogenations of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide at 21 atmospheres in a temperature range between 200° and 600° C. From the 8 metals studied) 25 catalysts represent 5 catalyst types were prepared and tested. The impregnated 0.5-percent-ruthenium catalyst proved to be the most active and versatile of all the catalysts produced. Tungsten and the noble metals other than ruthenium were low in activity and usually required temperatures above 500° C for appreciable production of hydrocarbons. Molybdenum was moderate in activity, but further improvement in molybdenum catalysts seems possible.

Subsidence was monitored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines over the ends of longwall panels operating in the Pittsburgh, Kittanning, and No. 2 Gas Coalbeds of the northern Appalachian Coal Basin. The final subsidence over the finishing ends of three panels in the Pittsburgh Coalbed are compared with the subsidence measured over the rib at these panels. The characteristics of subsidence are different. At Mine A, data over the start of a longwall panel shows similar characteristics to the subsidence measured over the rib. Subsidence over the fmishing ends of panels in the Kittanning and No.2 Gas Coalbeds are also different from the subsidence over the rib. The use of a subsidence prediction model based on data gathered over the rib of a panel will not yield accurate results if it is applied to the finishing end of a longwall panel. Acceptable results may be obtained along the centerline over the starting end of a panel.

This work was conducted to determine the feasibility of producing aluminum-silicon alloys in a pit-type, three-phase electric-arc furnace. Two carbon-lined furnaces were used in the tests. The power input ranged from 120 to 240 kw. in the small furnace and from 420 to 460 kw. in the large furnace. Energy consumption ranged from 5.3 to 11.5 kw.-hr. per pound of alloy produced and electrode consumption, from 240 to 510 pounds per ton of alloy produced. A wide range of crude aluminum-silicon alloys was produced by direct smelting of clays or similar aluminum silicate raw materials, using hogged fuel or wood chips as the major source of carbon in the furnace charge, and silicon of high grade was produced by smelting quartz. The aluminum content of the aluminum-silicon alloys ranged from 15 to 55 percent. Alloys produced from a white opaline-silicate clay were relatively free of iron, titanium, and other impurities. Those produced from western fire clays and kyanite, although richer in aluminum, contained considerable amounts of impurities. The purity of the alloys depended largely on the composition of the raw materials.

The purpose of this publication is to describe the power-distribution system of the mine and refinery of the Duval Sulphur & Potash Company at Carlsbad, N. Mex. This distribution system has been excellently predesigned to meet requirements and fit special conditions encountered at the property. In presenting the material, the authors point out various features that would be desirable for incorporation in other systems under similar conditions. Central location of switchgear in pressurized vaults and ventilation of such equipment with filtered air prevent salt accumulations and contribute to trouble-free operation. The simplification of power-distribution circuits and overload protection, as a result of centralization of switchgear, the use of individual control circuits enclosed in conduit (which aids troubleshooting), and central location of control panels, are factors which contribute to efficient, safe operation. Those features are applicable to many operations where fire or explosion hazards are encountered, or where dusty conditions may exist, as well as in operations where numerous individual drives are involved.

This report describes and presents results of a phase of a laboratory study conducted at the Morgantown Petroleum Research Laboratory, Federal Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, W. Va., to determine the response of shielded electrodes of different dimensions in thin, noninvaded beds and to stimulate interest in the use of focused-type logging devices in the Appalachian oilfields. A blotter model was used to obtain plots of the potential field in the vicinity of a model shielded electrode. Three plots are presented. The difference in curvature of equipotential lines and the variation in measured resistance values for different blotter-model conditions suggest that the shielded electrode will give resistivities higher than normal when measurements are taken in a thin conductive bed located between resistive beds, and resistivities lower than normal when measurements are taken in a thin resistive bed located between conductive beds.

The Fannie Ryan deposit is situated about 9 miles northwest of Boulder City, Clark County, Nev. at an altitude of about 2,000 feet on the north side of the River Mountains. The deposit is covered by several unpatented claims owned by Fannie B. Gulick of Las Vegas, Nev. The Boulder City deposit is within the Hoover Dan National Recreational Area. It is situated about 3 miles southeast of Boulder City in sec. 23,T. 23 S., R. 64 E., Clark County, Nev. The Deposit was covered by several unpatented mining claims owned by S. R. Whitehead of Las Vegas. The deposits occur in sedimentary beds of the Muddy Creek formation that overlie older volcanic extrusive. The manganese minerals occur as soft oxides of the wad type. The exploration was conducted by the Bureau of Nines in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey and comprised a study of the geology, mapping of the areas, and development by shaft sinking; diamond drilling, and sampling. On the Fannie Ryan Gulick property the work consisted of cleaning and sampling seven old trenches on the outcrop and diamond drilling seven holes totaling 1,482 foot. At the Boulder City deposit 188 feet of drilling was done in two holes. A 4- by 6-foot shaft was sunk to a depth of 44.5 feet, and the north and south sides of the shaft were sampled.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1953 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 101 samples of aviation gasoline which include, for the second time in this series of reports, data on some samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 32 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' production in their laboratories and the results sub-mitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 19 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 19 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

This work was undertaken to determine the feasibility of making mixed diborides of two metals directly from the metal oxides , boron carbide and carbon . The diborides (Ti , V ) , B₂ , (Ti , Cb) B₂ , and ( Ti , Ta ) B₂ were prepared in a crucible resistance furnace at 2,100 ° C , and X- ray- diffraction analyses showed each was a homogeneous solid solution containing approximately equal molar contents of the given diborides . The diboride powders were cold - pressed ; sintered to 2,300 ° C , and evaluated for mechanical strength , rate of oxidation , and resistance to molten metals . The diboride ( Ti , Ta ) B₂ exhibited the best mechanical properties ; the diboride ( Ti , Cb ) B₂ , the lowest cumulative rate of oxidation . The mixtures were stable in the presence of molten aluminum and copper but were attacked by molten Ti , Zr , and Cr .

A mineral survey of the 520-acre Quigg West Wilderness Study Area (MT-074-155) was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1986 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is in Granite County in western Montana about 16 miles northwest of Phillipsburg and 27 mi les northeast of Hamilton, MT. Stony Mountain, a study area on lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service, is about 1 mile to the south-southwest and was studied concurrently. No mineral resources were identified in the Quigg West Wilderness Study Area, but high grade gold assays, as much as 1.24 ounce gold per ton, were obtained at the one prospect found. Samples from four workings contained significant gold; minor silver, molybdenum, and copper were also present. The prospect containing the narrow and discontinuous gold-bearing quartz vein straddles the south boundary of the Wilderness Study Area. The shear zone containing the vein projects toward the old Crescent mine, about 4.5 miles to the south, which shows a similar geologic structure.

During the past several decades, there has been a steady increase in the number and size of experimental ovens used for carbonization research. Although many were originally intended principally for studies of coal expansion, current practice usually includes determinations of the properties of the experimental cokes. With respect to size and shatter characteristics, the cokes from the larger experimental ovens closely approximate those from duplicate charges carbonized in commercial ovens; however, they are consistently lighter and frequently less resistant to degradation by abrasive forces. To minimize these differences, some operators dry the experimental charges before carbonization. The resulting higher dry coal charge densities do, in fact, yield cokes with gravities closely approximating those produced commercially from the same coal or blend but without drying. The drying of the experimental charges may be criticized on the grounds that it represents a departure from commercial practice and may result in oxidation of the samples; for these reasons, the practice has not been universally adopted.

"An electro-optical method was used to quantify superoxide (SO) release from single rat pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) exposed in vitro to respirable quartz and kaolin dusts and in vivo to quartz. Release was determined by measuring the reduction of nitroblue tdrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate at 550 nm from video-recorded images of individual cells. In vitro exposure to 0.025 or 0.05 mg/ml kaolin for 40 minutes resulted in no significant differences in either the total diformazan produced (max) or the maximum rate of diformazan production (R)./n vitro exposure to 0.025 mg/ml c1uartz decreased max 38 percent while no significant change was found using 0.05 mg/ml. However, R was decreased 31 percent and 24 percent for the low and high dose, respectively. In contrast, PAM obtained from animals exposed in vivo to quartz dust for two or four weeks in inhalation chambers exhibited increased production of diformazan. However, only PAM analyzed three days post-exposure showed significant increases, while PAM from animals sacrificed ten or 31 days post-exposure were not significantly different from control. The combined in vitro and in vivo quartz results might suggest that there is an initital acute response to exposure that decreases the ability of PAM to produce SO, followed by recruitment of production of PAM with increased SO producing capability. It appears that removal of animals from the source of exposure permits PAM to return to control levels of SO production by31 days. Whether this would be true for chronic exposure remains to be elucidated.IntroductionPulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria.(1) This process involves ingestion as well as destruction of foreign matter. Phagocytosis usually is accompanied by a respiratory burst which increases cellular oxygen consumption leading to the release of highly reactive oxygen metabolites.(2) These agents have been implicated in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes, but they have also been shown to be toxic and,have been linked to cancer, emphysema, arthritis, diabetes, and other diseases.(3) Toxic effects may be a result of 1) an abnormally low production of metabolites, resulting in damage to lung tissue by the respired bacteria and/or dusts; or 2) an abnormally high production resulting in direct damage to lung tissue by metabolites themselves."

"It has been known for some time that sizes of aqueous particles may be affected by flow-induced relative humidity (RH) changes. The RH of air flowing through an impactor decreases as a result of pressure drop through the impactor and increases because of aerodynamic cooling within the high-speed jets, as illustrated in Figure 1. Because the sizes of aqueous particles depend on RH, the impaction stage on which such particles are collected may be different from the stage where they ought to be col¬lected, based on the particle size at the sampler inlet.Fuchs (1980) reviewed literature on water vapor condensation in impactors. The reviewed impactors operated at jet velocities of 100-250 m/s. Particle size increases ow¬ing to water vapor condensation were found in all cases. In one case (Khorguani et al., 1970), it was found that very small droplets (Dp <_ 0.02 um) containing sodium chloride and silver iodide were collected in an impactor with a cut point of 0.32 µm and a jet velocity of 100 m/s. Fuchs believed that such particles could not be captured in an impactor without having been enlarged by condensation. Winkler (1974) sampled at¬mospheric dust with a rectangular nozzle impactor that had a nozzle cross section of 0.3 x 15 mm, a cut size of 0.4 um, and an average jet velocity of 100 m/s. No adhesive was used on the impaction plate. The collection efficiency increased as air humidity was increased from 20% to 100%. The effect was especially noticeable in the increased collection efficiency for hygroscopic particles, and was attributed to condensation.Extensive theoretical and experimental research work on the distortion of the particle size distributions in impactors was done by Biswas and coworkers (1985, 1987). The impactors employed in the study were a low-pressure impactor with high jet velocity stages (Hering et al., 1978, 1979) and a conventional six-stage impactor, Sierra's model 226, operated in the incompressible regime. Ammonium sulfate aerosols were chosen for the study. In the low-pressure impactor, an orifice operating at a Mach number of 1 causes a sudden pressure drop, significantly reducing the RH in the next two stages (stages 5 and 6). This results in a 0.15-um diameter ammonium sulfate droplet shrinking to about 0.07 um at stage 5 when the inlet RH is 95%. In stage 7, the tempera¬ture drop is considerable because the jet speed is sonic. For an inlet RH of 95%, a 0.03 um droplet grows to about 0.06 um. However, the same size droplet at an inlet RH of 25% grows to only 0.04 um. For the Sierra model 226 cascade impactor that is operated with a Mach number of 0.27 at the last stage (stage VI), it was found that for an inlet RH of about 67%, particle growth would occur in stage VI. At 80% RH, both stages V and VI were affected. Biswas et al. (1987) stated that Mach number alone does not determine the size biasing; the type of aerosol, the inlet conditions, the temperature and pressure ratio, and the impactor geometry (throat length, jet-to-plate distance, etc.) must be considered for each stage in evaluating the distortion of the particle size distribution."

This report describes work done by the Bureau of Mines to simplify the design and operation of the vortex cone, a new device for prerefining blast furnace iron. Three new apparatus arrangements were tested. Results with one of these arrangements average 74.2 pct silicon removal and 61 pet oxygen efficiency (disregarding removal of carbon and manganese).

This publication summarizes the research (in-house and contract projects) programmed by the Bureau of Mines for fiscal year 1984 (October 1, 1983-September 30, 1984) under its Health and Safety Technology Program. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced advance toward the Bureau&apos;s overall goal of providing the systems technology required to create a more healthful and safer working environment for the Nation&apos;s mining and minerals processing workers.
