"INTRODUCTION At the request of Elmer Burch, of Taos, N. Mex., the Apache mica mine was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in October 1942. As the result of this examination, the Bureau of Mines proposed to extend an adit to the projection of the mica-bearing dike. The Federal Geological Survey then prepared a topographic and geologic map of the property. This information and consultations with members of the Survey 3/ assisted in determining the course and extent of the exploratory work. The author supervised the work, which was done from January to May 1944.Title to the property was in litigation during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation. Conrad Johnson, of La Madera, N. Mex., was contesting the valley of Burch's claim location covering the Apache mine. Johnson was a prior claimant. A map made during mining operations prior to 1929, showing all mine workings, was in the possession of Johnson, but he would not produce it for inspection as long as his title to the property was in doubt. The course of the adit extension was therefore controlled by the best information and judgment otherwise obtainable."

A recent survey of 23 vein-type metal mining operations in several western states discloses that some of the more serious deficiencies in ventilation technology are associated with inordinately high levels of mine resistance. This problem has progressively increased over many years of operation (without adequate remedial action) as mines have become extended in depth. Where two shafts form the downcast and upcast airways of a relatively deep mine, the whole of the mine air volume must pass through each shaft in turn. Since at least one of these shafts contains hoisting equipment, structural members are necessary to support the rigid guides and shaft walls. These offer high aerodynamic resistance. In some deep mines, a single shaft of this nature may represent upwards of one-half of the total mine resistance. The second shaft, depending upon its design, may represent an additional one-third of the mine resistance. Therefore, the various working levels throughout the mine contribute only the small remaining amount of the total mine resistance.

This paper, which describes mining practices at a mine in the Cave- in-Rock, Illinois, fluorspar district, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. Ore deposits in the southern Illinois-western Kentucky fluorspar dis- trict are of two general types (1) the flat-bedded, lenticular replacement and (2) the relatively narrow, rather steeply dipping fault or fissure filling. This paper describes production methods used and results obtained in mining one of the bedded lenticular ore bodies that are prevalent in the northeast portion of the district near Cave-in-Rock.

A summary of Bureau of Mines research on recycling, reuse, and disposal of mineral-, metal-, and energy-based wastes is presented, accompanied by an extensive bibliography of related publications. The Bureau's waste recycling and disposal program is directed toward the following four main areas of research and development: (1) extraction of mineral, metal, and energy values from urban refuse; (2) upgrading and recycling of automotive and related ferrous and nonferrous scrap; (3) recovery, utilization, and stabilization of mine and mill processing wastes, and (4) recovery and reuse of values from industrial waste products. This publication updates Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8529, which was issued August 1971.

Seven configurations for panel entries of a longwall coal mine are compared and ranked according to structural stability. These entry configurations are analyzed using three-dimensional finite element modeling The models include large dimensions to minimize boundary effects, elastoplastic constitutive relations, and simulated excavation and construction of support systems. The stability criteria are formulated in a quantitative manner to facilitate the ranking of the entry configurations. These criteria are based on the expected volume of caved rock in the entry openings. The stability ranking is applied to the entry excavation phase, the headgate phase, and the tailate phase of the entry life cycle. Parametric variations are applied using two-dimensional finite element models to determine the sensitivity to changes in mining and design parameters.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the properties and anisotropy in properties of rolled Zn-Ti and Zn-1.0 wt pct Cu-Ti alloys containing up to 0.36 wt pct Ti. Finish rolling was at varied temperatures to total reductions as high as 92 pct. Alloy properties are very sensitive to various combinations of composition, rolling temperature, and reduction. Properly rolled Zn-1.0 Cu-Ti alloys are superior in strength to Zn-Ti alloys. Conditions are described that lead to best tensile properties. Creep resistance for Zn-Ti alloys decreases with increased rolling temperature when finish rolled to 92-pct total reduction: but not when finish rolled to 33- or 67-pct reduction. Creep resistance for 7n-1.0 Cu-Ti alloys improves with increased rolling temperature to about 480° F. Heavily cold-rolled Zn-1.0 Cu-Ti alloys have fine grain sizes and poor hardness, tensile, and creep properties, but high ductility. Thermal expansivity is markedly affected by the copper addition. Data show the anisotropy of tensile, creep, and thermal expansivity properties. Large idiomorphic crystallites of TiZn15 appear in both Zn-Ti and Zn-Cu-Ti alloys when more than about 0.2 pct Ti is present. A new Zn-Cu-Ti intermediate phase was also identified. Empirical equations are presented relating creep rates with major process variables.

Research work in the Bureau of Mines cryogenic laboratory requires the use of high-sensitivity galvanometers of the d'Arsonval type in a building that is subject to unusually severe vibrations. A modified form of the galvanometer suspension described by Julius3 has damped the vibrations so successfully that a short note concerning it is thought to be desirable, The laboratory is on the site of the Amarillo helium plant near a building that houses gas engines of from 180 to 250 hp., driving compressors and electric generators. The distances from the galvanometers to the individual engines range from about 80 to 180 feet. The subsoil, consisting of black clay loam, transmits the impulses without much damping. The usual methods of protecting galvanometers from vibration were tried and proved fruitless. A Julius suspension purchased on the market was carefully installed in the hope that it would overcome the difficulty, but the conditions were too severe even for this elaborate arrangement. Several mudifications of the original Julius suspension, which were then introduced, resulted in almost complete elimination of all vibrational effects.

The mode of propagation of explosions through narrow passages is important for understanding flameproofed equipment employed in mines. Narrow channels have been used in this investigation that connected between a small explosion chamber and a large chamber containing fuel-air mixture. The oxygen index of the mixture in the small chamber was determined which caused an explosion in the outer chamber. Preliminary measurements have already been given in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5457 and suggested that) flames do not pass through narrow channels. The hot, burned gases from the explosion in the small chamber, however, are able to ignite the mixture in the large chamber by a process of hot-gas ignition. Systematic measurements are reported in the present paper that cover the influence of channel length and diameter and the properties of the gas mixtures in the large chamber on the transmission of explosions. The influence of such properties as quenching diameter and flame temperature is also discussed. This paper concludes the work on this problem and presents a theory that describes in detail parameters that influence transmission of explosions through narrow channels. INTRODUCTION Flameproofed equipment in mines is usually provided with flanges. A gap between the opposing flanges allows ventilation and release of pressure. "The Bureau of Mines and the State of Colorado are cooperating in an investigation of the oil shales of Colorado. in this report the yields and the results of analyses of the oil and, gas produced from a number of oil-shale samples from the principal deposits of Colorado and other oil-shale States, are compared with samples from Scotland and Australia, where the oil-shale industry has had its greatest commercial development, and also with a sample from Brazil *here extensive oil-shale deposits are found shale samples were not selected as being representative of the different deposits, but they illustrate the wide variation in the nature of the organic matter of different oil shales.A further study is being made of the chemical composition of the shale, distribution of nitrogen and sulphur. in the products, temperatures at which organic matter decomposes, and the results will be presented in subsequent Papers, With complete data available on the chemical composition of the shales, it may be possible to explain some of the differences in the nature of the products from the various shales,Most of the work described herein was done under the supervision of M. China?s New Steel Complex Postponed. - The planned $5 billion Baoshan Steel Works near Shanghai is being laid aside for 6 months to a year, and may be abandoned altogether. The second phase of construction, in which Wean United, Inc., of Pittsburgh was a major participant, has definitely been cancelled. Over $1 billion had been committed to the 6 million-ton-per-year plant. U.S. Firm Develops South African Fluorspar. - The Armco Bronne Co. of Middletown, Ohio, plans to spend $27 million to develop a fluorspar mine in the Republic of South Africa, With fluorspar reserves at 20 million metric tons, the project is planned to produce 200,000 tons Per year of fluorspar for export starting in 1983. U.S.S.R. Resumes Sales of Titanium Sponge. - Against a background of increased U.S. titanium sponge supplies, the Soviet Union is offering limited quantities of this commodity to the U.S. market at approximately $10.00 per pound, down from $25.00 per pound last year.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a survey to determine potential exposure of mine workers to dust produced in connection with intermittent rock drilling in coal mines. Eighteen mines in 3 states were visited, and 30 different operations were observed, as follows: 10 drilling in draw slate, 8 drilling top rock for brushing or grading, 2 drilling in the coal face, 4 drilling in the bottom, 2 drilling top rock for overcasts, 2 drilling in faults or boulders, 1 drilling for roof bolting, and 1 drilling for trolley hangers. Dust respirators were worn by drilling crews during 16 of the 30 operations. Three hundred thirty-two samples of air-borne dust were collected during the survey. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The information in this report is based on samples collected and observations made in bituminous-coal mines. Operating officials at these mines have contributed to this study, and their cooperation is gratefully acknowledged. All samples were counted by Thomas B. Kirby, chemist, and Dominick A. Detailed comprehensive assessment of the performance of Afghanistan's mineral industry during 1987 is virtually impossible, owing to the paucity of reliable published information. It was evident, however, that the level of civil disorder, now in its eighth year since the arrival of significant numbers of Soviet troops, was in actuality little removed from open civil war. Insurgents controlled substantial areas of the country and imperiled any industrial activity in many places. Assistance programs by the U.S.S.R. and other Eastern European nations were directed at developing the country's meager mineral industry, but the economy was generally viewed as chaotic. The inflation rate was somewhere between 20% and 30%; major food shortages contributed to the discontent of the population, and numerous villages were devastated by Soviet and Afghan Government campaigns to destroy the insurgents and cut their supply routes. Moreover, proposals by the Soviets and the Kabul Government aimed at reducing tensions with the rebels and scaling down the warfare seemingly were taken by the opposition as signs of weakening by the Soviet-backed Government, and rather than reducing aggressions, seemed to heighten insurrectionist activities. Efforts to entice the substantial number of Afghans who have fled to nearby areas of Pakistan and Iran to return to their country seemingly were failures, and indications near yearend that the Soviet Union might soon begin withdrawal of its occupation force of nearly 120,000 did little if any to reduce disorder.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a rapid, accurate method of analysis for small amounts of calcium in wolframite concentrates. This analysis is necessary to determine if the wolframite concentrates meet United States National Stockpile Specification P-57R2, which limits the calcium content to 0.2 percent. Because of the small depth of the sample analyzed in fluorescent X-ray spectrography, the calcium Kaline intensity was a function of the chemical composition of the calcium-bearing particle as well as the total matrix composition. This particle-composition effect was particularly important in this analysis, as the calcium may be present as a carbonate, tungstate, phosphate, etc. Three methods of preparing the sample eliminated the variation of calcium Ka intensity with mineralogical occurrence: (1) Reduction in particle size by extensive grinding, (2) chemical fusion with sodium carbonate, and (3) solution of the calcium by an acid attack.

All State mining laws require that flame safety lamps be used in gassy mines; the laws of some States require that safety lamps be kept for emergencies at every coal mine, whether gassy or nongassy. The use of the flame safety lamp has been widespread because it is the only defice readily available for detecting both the presence of methane and deficiency of oxygen. This paper reports the results of an investigation by the Electrical Section, in cooperation with the Gas Section, of the Pittsburgh Experiment Sta¬tion relative to the behavior of permissible flame safety lamps in mine atmospheres deficient in oxygen and the effects of methane5 on the detection of Oxygen deficiency.

Horizontal displacements and ground strains induced by mine subsidence are significant information needed for calculating damage and developing precautions against subsidence effects on surface structures. To devise a simple method for determining the surface horizonal displacements and strains simultaneously with the subsidence prediction, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the significance of the tilt number, which is the proportionality constant in the relationship between the horizontal displacement and the slope of the subsidence profile. The ratio of the tilt number to the critical radius of the subsidence trough is identical to the ratio of the maximum possible horizontal displacement to the full subsidence, which is found to be constant in most European coalfields. If this ratio is known for a particular minesite in the United States, then horizontal displacement and ground strains can be readily obtained from the primary subsidence data.

This report presents the results of a task to complete a final design of a remote controlled hi-roof bolting machine for high roof areas in coal mines. The project was begun by visiting several coal mines to become familiar with roof fall areas. Several machine concepts were generated and presented to the design committee for criticism. A preliminary design was completed, as covered by this report. A Final Design and Final Report will be issued incorporating the committee comments at the Preliminary Design review and comments received concerning this Preliminary Design Report.

A Julius suspension purchased on the market was carefully installed in the hope that it would overcome the difficulty, but the conditions were too severe even for this elaborate arrangement. Several modifications of the original Julius suspension, which were then introduced, resulted in almost complete elimination of all vibrational effects. These modifications were suggested by careful study of the original idea embraced in the Julius construction. They were designed to give further constraint to motion in any direction other than that parallel to a line from the point of support through the center of gravity of the suspension, This was accomplished by making the suspended frame more rigid and by improving the means of adjusting each of the supporting wires to the same degree, thereby transmitting any impulse symmetrically through the three wires. The result was a suspension that is more effective, particularly for severe vibration, than the form described by Julius; also, it is believed to have advantages in stability, simplicity, and ease of adjustment over the few suspensions for this type of service that the author has found described in the literature.

Although it is impossible to give definite final figures at this time on Nation-wide accident occurrence in 1933 , enough data are at hand to indicate that the progress in safety in the mining industry, which first became apparent in 1930 and was accentuated in 1931 and 1932 , was continued and much improved in 1933. This improvement was of considerable magnitude in mining both bituminous coal and anthracite but was not so great in other branches of the mining industry . While the volume of work done in all phases of mining increased in 1933 over that in 1932 , the exact amount of the increase is not yet known . Usually increased activity in mining is accompanied by even greater increase in the rate of occurrence of accidents to the workers , but happily it appears that this " rule " was not operating in 1933 --at least in the coal -mining industry .
