Two concentrates from Palabora, in South Africa, containing 0.056-0.068% undesirable Cu and 0.8 or 2.2% Ti, were chlorinated with air:chlorine ratios of 10:1, 15:1 and 20:1 at temperatures between 1 200 and 1 329 K. The resulting volatile chlorides were condensed and the solutions analysed for Cu, Fe and Ti. Recovery of Cu was less than 25% at low temperatures and short reaction times, but at 1 258 K almost all Cu was removed from the magnetite at all ratios of chlorine to air. At higher temperatures, the increased carrying over of iron as FeCl3 could be minimised by decreasing the partial pressure of chlorine. No titanium was detected in the volatile products and the percentage of Cu recovered was independent of Ti concentration in the concentrates, though as a function of Cl2 vol%, more Cu was recovered at 1 200 K from the low-Ti than from the high-Ti concentrate. In a fluidised-bed reactor, Cu recovery was 58-90% and iron carry-over less than 10 ppm

Sublevel caving is likely to remain the dominant system at both Malmberget and Kiruna for the foreseeable future. The sub-level interval has increased from 12 m in 1983 to 30 m, requiring more effective drifting and the development of a contour blasting technique to reduce requirements for rock reinforcement. Production drilling is mainly by hydraulic hammers or water-powered in-the-hole machines drilling 115 m diameter holes. Loading operations are undertaken 7 days/week with 15-25 tonne capacity electric shovels. Production has increased by nearly 70% since 1983 and productivity has risen threefold

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. An integration of S isotopic, fluid and mineralogical data for granitoid-related mineralisation showed that the porphyry systems had a predominantly subcrustal magma source, but the inner magma pulse of two-mica granite in the Fleet pluton was derived mainly from reduced sediments. The porphyry-style mineralisation formed from boiling fluids at high crustal levels, with a moderately saline fluid percolating down to the upper veins as they cooled but not penetrating the deeper Talnotry deposit. Veins in peripheral greywackes have a significant magmatic component but also incorporated CO2-rich components and metals released by dewatering of host sediments in response to granitoid intrusion. The low grade of regional metamorphism resulted in the significant fluid input from country rocks which led to the more exotic mineral compositions, especially where argillaceous sediments were involved

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The SW part of the Southern Uplands is a back-arc section of an accretionary thrust system, divided into structural blocks by major NE-SW shear zones and NW-SE faults forming the margins of Permian half-grabens. The highest arsenic levels in stream sediments (over 65 ppm) are associated with those blocks carrying brittle-ductile transition fabrics. Three factors combine to recomend the area as having potential for gold mineralisation: As-rich greywackes as country rock, felsic intrusions and a major shear zone. Selected stream sediments were analysed for gold using lead fire assay with ultra-pure flux and ICP-MS finish. Several localities showed over 15 ppb Au, the three most significant being within the hanging wall of the Orlock Bridge Fault and each having distinct characteristics

The results of initial work indicate that for 3 of the 5 quarry sands bioleaching reduces the iron oxide content to a commercially acceptable 0.035 wt% Fe20 3, although the time taken to achieve this is 14-22 days against a target leach time of 7 day. Subsequent work has identified strains of Aspergillus niger that are more efficient at producing the array of complexing agents for iron and is yielding excellent and rapid reductions in Fe levels. Potentially, bioleaching offers a more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient process for the removal of Fe from glass-making sands than conventional routes but the production of organic acids by fermentation must be achievable with low-cost substrates such as sugar-beet molasses and lactose permeates for bioleaching to offer a commercially viable alternative to treatment with hot mineral acids. Silica sands usually contain three groups of Fe minerals: iron oxyhydroxides, which comprise crystalline types such as goethite and limonite tending to occur as thin, discontinuous coatings and in cracks and crevices on the surface of the quartz; the assemblage of heavy trace minerals, which include ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, chromite and haematite, commonly present at levels of 0.1 wt% or less as discrete grains or sometimes cemented to the quartz; and clay minerals cemented in pits on the surface of the quartz and in association with weathered, discrete feldspars. The response of the assemblage of iron minerals to short periods of exposure to hot inorganic acids is broadly related to which group they belong to, those that form coatings being accessible to acid and tending to react rapidly whereas the trace minerals are usually resistant and react very slowly, if at all, and the clays are probably digested. The note reports on a preliminary study of the use of microorganisms to develop an alternative clean technology that will give results comparable to those achievable with hot inorganic mineral acids but with more environmentally acceptable procedures. Various fungi and bacteria produce organic acids when grown in certain media. When these acids come into contact with Fe-stained sand grains the iron is removed as soluble complexes. Several strains of Aspergillus niger have been found to produce organic acids from sugar, predominantly citric, gluconic and oxalic acids, their relative yields depending on cultivation medium and conditions. The key variables in the financial analysis of a mining project include the metal price and the quantities of ore and metal. In general, if the metal price drops, the cutoff grade is increased so as to increase the average grade. This causes recovered tonnages of ore and metal to drop. Discussion is presented of the development of a new method to evaluate the relationship between the cutoff grade, z, the ore tonnage above cutoff, T, and the metal quantity above cutoff, Q. Detailed information is provided on the QTz curves for lognormal and inverse gaussian (Sichel's) distributions. Both these distributions are used as models for the grades in different types of ore bodies, and they are both T-symmetric. The geometry of the QTz curves is simplified, making it easier to work out the impact of minor variation in the parameter values for each distribution

With the gradual exhaustion of natural rutile, there has been extensive research into its synthesising from lower-grade titanium minerals. The removal of Fe from pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) by chlorination was studied, using both isothermal and non-isothermal thermogravimetric measurements. Correlation of the results obtained from element distribution maps, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and phases detected by X-ray diffraction in the chlorinated samples showed clearly two associated processes. First, the pseudobrookite particles reacted with chlorine and iron was removed selectively as FeCl3(g), leaving a solid residue rich in the TiO2 phases anatile and rutile, separated from an inner layer of unreacted pseudobrookite by a distinct interphase boundary. Second, chlorine allowed TiCl4(g) to form in the reaction bed, where it removed iron from the Fe2O3 crystals as FeCl3(g) and substituted Ti through a pseudomorphic reaction

The performance of a 12.7 cm hydrocyclone was investigated by considering the effect of design variables (diameters of the vortex finder and apex) and operating variables (pressure drop and solids content of the feed) at a medium feed solids concentration of mixed minerals. Cut-size was found to be the most important parameter in hydrocyclone design and operation. The effect of feed pressure in reducing hydrocyclone cut-size is less pronounced at medium feed solids concentration with a mixed mineral feed. The choice of vortex finder diameter and apex diameter becomes more sensitive at medium feed solids concentrations. The effect of feed solids concentration in increasing the cut-size becomes less marked at higher concentrations. Predictions of an empirical model were found to be in good agreement with experimental data. Comparison of results obtained from the model with those predicted by theoretically derived models showed the latter to be more promising, with the turbulent two-phase model giving closer agreement with the experimental data

The deposit was discovered during systematic reconstruction of the geological history of glacial overburden, which averages 6 m in thickness over 80% of Sweden, by geochemical sampling and searching for small grains of eroded bedrock. The gold is mainly concentrated in and around high-grade quartz veins within a broad shear zone, though the correlation coefficient between quartz and gold in samples is not significant. Production from two pits, now connected, in the Central and Eastern orebodies has increased steadily from 1 238 kg Au in 1989 to 2 120 kg in 1994, the highest in Europe. The mine has adapted and improved its mining methods to achieve significant productivity increases and cost reductions. Most of the improvements have been achieved through a better understanding of the controls on mineralisation and of the implications of those controls for selective mining. Geostatistics has played an important role in the quantification of grade variability and gold occurrence. Better blasting and loading techniques have improved selectivity, grade control has been enhanced by a grade-control drilling programme, and significant improvements in mineral processing have been made

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. A lithological and geochemical study revealed significant lateral variation of the interval over 170 km of strike, from about 30 m at the Union Section to 220 m near Brits. The cumulates also become more evolved and leucocratic with distance from the Union Section both towards the NE (Amandelbult) and SE (Impala, Rustenburg and Brits). It is inferred that the persistent heat flux from a putative major feeder zone near the Union Section impaired deposition of felsic cumulates in the vicinity, delaying crystallisation of successive phases in parts of the chamber near the feeder. New influxes were therefore deposited on a footwall of varying thickness and lithology in response to different degrees of crystallisation and accumulation along strike. Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). Standardised stream-sediment sampling procedures have been used in mountainous and hilly terrains. Special sampling procedures were developed for application in remote environments, such as high mountains, desert, semi-desert, karst and loess-covered regions. The diversified analytical methods used in more than 20 analytical laboratories participating in the project have been unified into two multi-element, multi-method analytical systems. A unified data monitoring procedure was developed based on primary and secondary standard samples. To date the project has covered about 4 000 000 km2 and the aim is to complete the coverage within the present decade

During a programme to determine the suitability of the UK site for deep disposal of radioactive wastes, geostatistical methods were used to characterise rock heterogeneity on the basis of seismic and wireline acoustic-impedance data. The data were analysed to yield semi-variogram models that quantified the three-dimensional spatial heterogeneity of acoustic impedance. These models were reconciled with geological interpretations of the area and used to generate simulations of acoustic impedance, with wireline acoustic impedance as conditioning data. The three-dimensional simulated images were compared with actual seismic acoustic impedance. The variography confirmed a vertical zoning effect in the Borrowdale Volcanics, showing that it is caused by preferential clusters of high acoustic impedance values corresponding to regions of relatively low porosity. The method provided realistic three-dimensional models from sparse, one-dimensional wireline data

The reduction of zinc from slags by a molten, carbon-saturated bath was examined in a laboratory study under conditions of continuous slag feeding. The results show that it is possible to reduce the bulk of the zinc from the slag before there is a net reduction of iron. However, the recovery of zinc was not as high as in batch tests performed in an earlier study. Lead in the slag was reduced simultaneously with the zinc to very low levels and was volatilised. Copper in the slag was reduced and dissolved in the alloy. An attempt was made to identify potentially commercial ways of treating zinc slags using an iron bath. The approaches that appear to have the greatest potential are reduction in a batch process using electrical heating and reduction in a continuous process with co- or countercurrent flow of the slag and alloy. In the latter the alloy would be prepared in a separate furnace before being contacted with the slag. The purpose of this would be to superheat and carburise the alloy so that no additional heat or reductant would have to be supplied in the slag-alloy reactor

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Platinum-group minerals (PGM) in the enriched zone at Dust Mountain occur in two separate parageneses, the first representing primary magmatic PGM and the second primary magmatic PGM that have been reduced to alloys during serpentinisation. Minerals in the first group were unaffected by hydrothermal alteration on account of their textural setting or stable chemical composition. Despite substantial alteration of the serpentinised assemblage, most evidence points to the dominant role of primary magmatic processes in determining PGM occurrence. Several base metals have nevertheless been introduced hydrothermally. With respect to surficial dispersion the single most important paragenetic factor was the reduction of sulphides to alloys, rendering them more susceptible to mechanical erosion and less so to chemical leaching. The different textural setting of Pd-group and Ir-group phases results in different dispersion characteristics, with major implications for stream sediment sampling

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Phases of the Ir sub-group are present either as inclusions in or interstitially to chromite and are unaffected by (or only altered in situ during) hydrothermal processes. By contrast, almost all phases of the Pd sub-group are located in a secondary textural setting - in fractures in chromite or between fragments of brecciated chromite. The different settings indicate that the mineralisation episodes were associated with magmatic and hydrothermal stages respectively. The presence of an included Pd-group mineral in a hydrothermally Pd-group mineralised chromitite sample suggests that the hydrothermal Pd-group minerals were at least partly derived by remobilisation from magmatic deposits in the chromitite pod. These observations indicate that Pd-group elements are more mobile than Ir-group elements under hydrothermal conditions and point to the potential for hydrothermal platinum and palladium mineralisation in favourable environments

Modern advances have led to sweep and multibeam bathymetric surveying techniques that yield three-dimensional images of the sea floor and have also produced high-powered personal computers with which to control the data and analyse the results. At Sydney, in Nova Scotia, the topography of the sea floor over the longwall workings was observed before and after mining with a precision echo-sounder in 1987-89, with sweep bathymetry in 1993 and with multibeam bathymetry in 1994-95. The results of the latter programme produced what was probably the first observation of a complete three-dimensional subsidence trough over a longwall panel 2 500 m x 168 m. The subsidence has been quantified to a sufficient degree of accuracy to allow simple trend analysis, which has shown that the pattern and shape of movements are similar to those found elsewhere but with significantly smaller maximum subsidence. A phenomenological model is presented that relates Pb-Zn mineralisation to proximal geopressure zones. Typically, geopressure zones (GPZ) consist of masses of undercompacted sediment encapsulated within impermeable shales and are characterised by high formation fluid pressures. Heat flow is perturbed in some GPZ on account of their insulating properties. Geothermal gradients as high as 150 degrees C/km have been observed over short distances in the sediments of the US coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Some modern geopressure zones are known to reach temperatures of 120-150 degrees C at depths of 2.5-3.5 km. It is demonstrated that the zones may act as proximal sources of hydrothermal fluids, thus explaining the high temperatures of mineralisation observed in the deposits, which are hosted in basins characterised by thick, rapidly deposited, shale-rich clastic sequences

Many high-grade iron ores are considered to result from the supergene enrichment of banded iron formations. The secondary processes may be related to either present-day or ancient erosion cycles and may reach a considerable depth. Other high-grade ores hosted by banded iron formations are regarded as either sedimentary or metamorphic in origin although often also subjected to the secondary processes. The evidence for this multiplicity of origins is reviewed with descriptions of selected deposits: Kedia d'Idjil and M'Haoudat in Mauritania, Bomi Hills and the Nimba Range in Liberia, the Itabira district in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and El Pao in eastern Venezuela. Emphasis is placed on the recognition of textures that show that some ores are tectonites, the precursor materials having undergone pervasive deformation accompanied by metamorphism. The question whether such ores are pre- or syntectonic is difficult to resolve, the evidence being inconclusive, but a diagenetic/early deformation origin is preferred. The possible range of origins has to be taken into account in exploration, particularly as regards the depth of drilling, and in the characterisation of ores for metallurgical use
