Presently,Many long-wall fully-mechanized faces in shallow depth coal seams are below room and pillar goaf in Shendong mining area. When the working face is advanced out of concentrated coal pillar in upper room and pillar goaf, strong strata behaviors often cause support crushing accident. Aiming at a support crushing accident which happened in Shigetai coal mine of Shenhua group in Shendong mining area, this paper analyses the stress transfer process while mining out of concentrated coal pillar by numerical simulation software FLAC3D. According to the feature, simplifying the roof of upper room and pillar goaf as supporting-beam structure explains mechanism of large area collapse in room and pillar goaf roof. Based on the feature of supporting-beam structure, deep-hole blasting concentrated coal pillar technology is proposed to control the strong strata behaviors in Shigetai coal mine. The blasting control effect is confirmed through characteristics of strata behaviors, growth circumstance of ground crack and multi-point extensometer monitoring results. By using control technology, Shigetai coal mine has been successfully avoided support crushing accident.

Al-Mg-Si alloys are widely used as medium-strength structural materials; extrusion is the most common processing route. In the present hot deformation investigation of a 6060 alloy, the microstructure of the alloy has been analyzed in the as-cast state, after homogenization heat treatment and after hot deformation by tensile tests in the range 400-490°C and 10-4 to 10-2s-1 on both as cast and homogenized alloys. After deformation the microstructure of the as-cast alloy exhibited cavitation. The flow curves at the lowest test temperature T show a gradual softening after a stress peak, being more evident for the alloy deformed in the homogenized state in association with a high yield stress; at higher T a plateau is attained which is lower as T rises and strain rates decrease. For each fixed T, the ductility decreases as strain rate increases for the homogenized alloy whereas, for the as cast alloy, it rises with strain rate. Constitutive analysis gives Q = 240kJ1mol for the homogenized alloy in agreement with published values; this indicates a more rapid strength decline with rising T than Al, suitable for good hot workability along with the lack of cavitation.

"Iron ore processing industries play a vital role in the Indian economy. At present Iron ore of around +64% Fe is used for production of Iron through blast furnace. To produce +64% Fe from low/medium grade ores, crushing & beneficiation is compulsory. But during these processes, large amount of slime is generated. It is estimated that 18% -25% of tailing is generated during the processing of iron ore. The iron ore slime is discarded because of its particle size and chemical composition not being suitable as feed to the blast furnace. Although the fines/slimes can be agglomerated to larger particle, the alumina to silica ratio which is normally more than one pose serious problem during sintering process and subsequent smelting in blast furnace. The alumina content in the slime needs to be reduced for it to be used as the feed for blast furnace. The sample assayed 61.40% Fe, 7.68% SiO2, and 1.52% Al2O3, LOI 2.63% and all other elements were found in critical limit. A series of 27 tests were conducted by using a spiral for optimisation of process parameters to produce a pellet grade concentrate from the stacked slimes obtained from Kirandul. This paper deals with the optimisation studies of various parameters of a spiral concentrator and helps to utilize the fines from tailing ponds.INTRODUCTIONReserves of high-grade iron ores are diminishing all over the world at an alarming rate. As a result, alternative ways of augmenting and conserving precious and non - renewable natural resources are being seriously considered. One such attractive option is the recovery of metal values from slimes / tailings. Iron ore tailings containing around 48 - 60% Fe are generated from the iron ore washing plants and are disposed into tailing ponds without any further utility. These tailings in the form of slimes are not suitable in iron and steel making due to the presence of higher amount of gangue constituents. Several beneficiation techniques have been tried from time to time to reduce the gangue so that the beneficiated products could be effectively used."

"Developments in understanding the brittle fracture of rock over the past two decades ultimately led to the acceptance of a cohesion-weakening-friction-strengthening model as an appropriate strategy for the modelling of spalling using a continuum approach. This strength model has been used to replicate observed failure depths and geometries for a number of case studies in the literature, most notably the AECL Underground Research Laboratory in Manitoba. One thing which these case studies typically ignore, however, is the influence of rock dilatancy on the evolution of brittle failure. Physically, this phenomenon is the volumetric expansion of the rock due to fracture opening; numerically, this phenomenon is captured by the flow rule, which is often characterized by the dilation angle, ?. Accurately modelling rock dilatancy in conjunction with strength evolution is necessary both to predict the magnitude and distribution of ground displacements, as well as the exact depth and shape of the fracturing zone. Both of these factors can have significant implications for support design. This paper is focussed on presenting some of the recent developments in this field in the context of a number of numerical modelling case studies. Initially, a new model for the dilatancy of brittle rock is presented, as well as some representative data and model parameters for different rock types. Next, several case studies of highly stressed tunnels and shafts are presented. The results of continuum numerical models are presented to demonstrate the ability of the back analyses to match observed in-situ measurements and obtained. The predictive capabilities of the material model are also highlighted for cases where sufficient “a priori” information (such as laboratory compression testing data) are available. The issues of model nonuniqueness and strain-localization/bifurcation are also addressed."

Apparently man has accepted the statement as a challenge and has been attempting to refute it ever since, as he continues to transfer the workload to his inanimate servants - the many types of machines and other labour-saving devices that are available to assist or perform for him in the normal tasks of the day. The history of the evolution of the use of energy takes us back to primitive man, who existed in a very low energy environment, the only energy available being his own muscle power. Although man took a great leap forward when he discovered fire, which was used for lighting, heating and cooking, he still depended upon his own muscles for power. Early man's greatest achievement was probably the invention of the wheel, which permitted him to utilize the muscle power of animals. While still in a very primitive state when viewed from the perspective of the twentieth century, man, with fire and the wheel, had achieved a standard of life far exceeding that of his predecessors. Looking beyond the very basic elements of human energy, fire and the muscle power of animals, we find the next additions of energy coming from man's mastery of other elements of nature. The Phoenicians utilized the power of the wind and the Romans adapted the energy of falling water to the water wheel."

In order to determine the recovery functions in an oil sand circuit it is necessary to have more than a minimal determination the mass flows in the network. This over-determination is essential in order to allow for measurements within the flow matrix "to flex" according to an error function. It is then possible to identify the flows and composition at all points with maximum likelihood. These so-called full mappings are not easily obtained. However, in order to obtain an unequivocal determination of all the unit operations recoveries such a balance is needed. When databases are constructed exclusively with coherently balanced sets of data it is possible to obtain a maximally accurate process model by maximizing the probability of correctly identifying the process causality. Indeed, it is doubtful in cases of normal complexity that any sense can be made of data that is not so balanced. Coherent mass energy balancing is a tool developed by mineral processing scientists and engineers. Its rigorous application to oil sands is the subject of this paper. The additional element associated with hydrocarbon requires special considerations. It is shown that at least one currently available mineral processing tool will solve the full-mapping problem for an oil sand operation. Experimental design constraints are discussed in this paper relating to the development of databases for the development of effective process models.

"Rougher flotation in sulfide ore applications is typically performed using conventional flotation machines. The trend over the last 100 years has been for these cells to become larger in volume with cells reaching sizes of 600 m3 and in some cases even larger. The associated foundation loadings, transport and installation requirements along with building size have also increased. In an economic environment where projects must be executed with dwindling capital supply, bigger is not always better. More recently, industry is being challenged to identify new technology that allows for improved flowsheets and financial returns through efficiency gains. To meet this challenge, a novel high-intensity two-stage flotation system known as the StackCell™ was tested to potentially achieve installation volume and required retention time gains when compared to conventional flotation circuits. The results from on-site pilot scale work conducted on typical copper concentrator rougher flotation feed showed retention time gains on the order of 6 to 9 times when compared with conventional flotation equipment. This finding has the potential of reducing capital demands for rougher flotation circuit designs when incorporating the StackCell. The results from test work will be discussed in this paper showing comparative test data generated with a Denver bench batch test, pilot StackCell and large conventional cells, all receiving the same feed.INTRODUCTION Over the last few years, a number of flotation devices have been described as two-stage or multi-stage flotation units. The idea behind multi-stage flotation devices is that flotation performance can be improved by utilizing cells with multiple specialized units in series, but not all units of the same type, as is practiced in trains of multiple tank cells or columns. Instead, each unit is specially designed to provide the optimized fluid environment for each stage of the sequential flotation process. This idea has been proposed based on a study of the fundamentals of the flotation process, and the realization that the process consists of discrete sequential processes, that are each optimized with dissimilar process conditions (Finch et al, 1995), (Zhou, 1996). Instead of executing each step simultaneously in a homogeneous fluid environment, where the conditions would be a compromise between particle collection and froth recovery, the multi-stage flotation unit operates in a set of segregated process environments, each with a set of conditions optimized for that step."

Introduction The problems of metallogenesis are largely related to those concerning the origin of igneous rocks, which, in turn, are involved with the question of crustal mechanics. Many ore-bodies are genetically related to associated intrusive and there is an equally close association apparent between igneous intrusion and crustal deformation. The problem of ore-deposition is concerned, therefore, with the fundamental problems of geology. For a long time speculations regarding crustal movements rested largely on the contraction theory and its associated conceptions. Vertical movements were considered to be all important and horizontal movements secondary to them. Magmas were pictured as rising more or less vertically in the crust and were believed to form in vertically disposed magma-chambers or reservoirs. The principle of magmatic differentiation seemed to offer the best explanation of the origin and association of diverse rock types and it seemed also to require the existence of quiescent magma-chambers for the admittedly slow process of differentiation. Accumulating evidence of the importance of horizontal movement in the crust, has, along with other considerations, discredited the contraction hypothesis and many of the inferences that go with it. The same evidence may require some change in the prevailing conception of the origin of the various types of igneous rock and of the mechanics of intrusion. Geologists are now at sea concerning some of the vital and fundamental problems of the crust, and the field is open for speculation. The writer is developing a hypothesis which seems to permit an explanation and? a correlation of earth structures and phenomena. If it rests on a firm foundation, the hypothesis, because it is fundamental, is certain to have a profound bearing on the problems of economic geology. It is for this reason that an outline of the hypothesis is offered at this time. Only a few of its economic bearings are foreseen at this time and these will be indicated.

"The property owned by the Lamaque Mining Company comprises a group of forty-four claims and fractions occupying an area of about 2,458 acres, in west-central Bourlamaque township, Abitibi county, Quebec. It is on ,the outskirts of the towns of Bourlamaque and Val d'Or, about 70 miles east of Noranda, near the eastern end of the belt of greenstones of Keewatin and Timiskaming age that extends eastward through Kirkland Lake into northwestern Quebec, terminating in Haig and Jurie townships 40 miles to the east.The claims on which the orebodies occur were first staked in 1923; No. 3 vein was discovered the following year. The original discovery was made by R. Clark in 1923. This was a small quartz vein containing a pocket of coarse gold on the north side of a hill near the northwestern corner of block 3. It is said that all the gold was removed in one shot in blasting into the vein; elsewhere it was barren. A picket line was then run west along the strike of the vein, which occupied a narrow shear zone, and about 2,000 feet west, in prospecting on either side of the picket line, a large boulder of quartz and tourmaline containing visible gold was found. This led to more intensive prospecting by trenching in the vicinity with the result that the No. 3, or 'float' vein, about 250 feet north of the boulder, was found. Due to low ground this vein was exposed in only one trench. The only other important vein found on the surface was the No. 1, or H, vein, which was exposed in several places by stripping and trenching, but it did not carry appreciable amounts of gold."

The Advocate Mines Limited asbestos property is 6 km north of Baie Ve rte on the northeast coast of Newfoundland. Mining began in the early 1960s and was concluded in 1981. The chrysotile asbestos deposit lies at the north end of the Baie Verte Lineament, the interface between a closing ocean floor and continental margin. Asbestos occurs within ultramafic rocks of abducted ophiolite massifs that were thrust westward against Fleur-de-Lys Supergroup metasediments (continental rise sediments) in the Lower to Middle Ordovician. The asbestos-bearing ultramafics belong to the Central Ultrabasic Sequence of the Advocate Complex. Serpentinized peridotite of this sequence has a 'waste cap' core that grades outward to increasingly sheared rock. Asbestos is found mainly in a northtrending, basin-shaped zone surrounding the core, specifically within fractured serpentinized peridotite that abuts the sheared rock. Asbestos appears as stockworks of chrysotile cross fibre veins and is concentrated between brown, narrow brucitic dunite dykes and sills. Shear contacts commonly surround the ultrabasic body. Cross faults and complex Jointing also exist. The Advocate Mines Limited mill produced 65,000 tonnes of Group IV fibres and 1 l , 000 tonnes of Group VJ fibres annually. The bagged product enjoyed markets worldwide.

"Abstract - The Little Falls member of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation is situated in the northern part of the Brunswick Belt of the Bathurst Mining Camp and has been interpreted as the distal equivalent of proximal tuffaceous rocks that host the stratiform Brunswick No. 12 and No. 6 Pb-Zn massive sulfide deposits. It comprises fine-grained, greenish-gray tuffaceous sandstone in the lower part, and coarse-grained, crystal-rich tuffaceous sandstone in the upper part. Petrographic evidence suggests that these rocks have a turbiditic origin. The Little Falls member is underlain by the Vallée Lourdes member, mainly composed of relatively shallow-water calcareous rocks, and is conformably overlain by Mn-rich sedimentary rocks, mainly red argillites that host the Tetagouche Falls Mn-(Fe) deposit. All these rocks are considered to belong to the Nepisiguit Falls Formation, part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Whole-rock geochemical data from the fine-grained tuffaceous sandstone and coarse-grained tuffaceous sandstone indicate that the two units of the Little Falls member are distinct. Zr and TiO2 contents, and total rare earth element (REE) values are higher in the coarse-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.040, average SREE = 247 ppm, n = 6) than in the fine-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.048, average SREE = 158 ppm, n = 17), which can be attributed to the variation in crystal content between the two units. Both units are HREE-enriched and have elevated La/Yb relative to the typical Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Overall, the geochemical data combined with evidence from the bounding units suggest that the Little Falls member was deposited in relatively shallow water, possibly in a near-arc environment. The relationship of volcanic facies within the Nepisiguit Falls Formation and the geochemistry of these facies indicate strongly that fine grained, reworked tuffaceous rocks, regardless of whether they are the distal equivalents of proximal tuffaceous rocks, are not associated with the major ore-bearing horizons of the Bathurst Mining Camp. PREFACE THE successful conclusion of all geophysical work depends on the operator's skill and sound judgment, as well as on his knowledge of geology and geophysics. We have been fortunate enough to have as co-workers a number of very good men. Some results of their work are summarized in this paper, and it is a pleasure to acknowledge their cheerful spirit of co-operation and the enthusiasm and loyalty with which they have assisted in the building of a geophysical organization to serve the Canadian mining industry HISTORY Geophysical prospecting is commonly, but quite erroneously, regarded as something new. The name is modern, but the principle of applying physical laws to reveal the presence of hidden ore is several hundred years old. Already, at the beginning of our civilization, the need was strongly felt for methods that could indicate the presence of ore in regions where the ore-bodies were completely masked or hidden from the eye. Particularly in countries where the rocks have been eroded during periods of glaciation and later covered by a thick mantle of glacial debris, all kinds of mysterious schemes were invented to locate the hidden ore. Often magic was resorted to (for example, the divining rod), but methods based on sound principles were also developed. Such features as topography, colour and taste of surface waters, and the growth and occurrence of trees and plants, were used to reveal certain types of ore deposits. For finding bodies of iron ore, the compass was very early in use. The fact that objects of iron attract a compass needle was utilized in prospecting long bef01:e the time of Columbus, and a systematic search for bodies of iron ore by this method was organized as early as the year 1600. There are still in existence documents, dated a little over 300 years ago, which show that the Swedish Chancellor of that day, Axel Oxenstiorna, ordered dozens of sun-dial compasses from instrument makers in Germany. The Swedish Government at that time employed a great number of prospectors to search systematically for iron ore. This Government undertaking must have been quite successful, as a number of iron ore-bodies were found in areas covered by heavy overburden. These prospectors were simply Government 'geo-physicists', although they were not known by this fancy name.

The Cigar Lake ore body is a high-grade uranium deposit situated within water-saturated sandstone. In order to extract the uranium ore remotely, ensuring minimal radiation dose to workers, and also to access the ore from stable ground, the Jet Boring System (JBS) was developed. This method of mining involves drilling a pilot hole up through a frozen ore body and utilizing a high-powered water jet to mine out cavities. During the mining process an ultrasonic sensor will be used to provide feedback to the operator, who is located beneath the ore body, as to the dimensions of the cavity. However, more precise data is required to determine final shape, volume, and location of the cavity for mine planning purposes. Selecting a device that will provide sufficient range data in the challenging environment will be vital to optimizing the mining process. Major issues include fog build up and flying debris during mining, and an environment that is wet, dark, and cold A test cavity has been designed and constructed at the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) so that a study comparing three different technologies, as prospective candidates for the survey system, can be conducted. The devices being evaluated include a Senix ultrasonic sensor, an MDL Cavity Auto-Scanning Laser System (C-ALS), and a MESA Time of Flight (ToF) camera. The ultrasonic sensor is known to provide range data in foggy conditions but has low accuracy. The C-ALS has been developed for surveying remote cavities but is expensive and does not provide reliable data in fog. The ToF camera provides a high volume of data in a short time period, with potential to provide accurate information in extreme conditions, but has not been tested in a mine cavity application. Iterative closest point (ICP) registration is applied in an attempt to create a 3D point cloud from the scan data and to also compute rotation and translation of the ToF camera. This paper presents an overview of the challenges involved in conducting a survey within a JBS mined cavity, the analysis used to determine the suitability of each device, and the data collected from the test cavity.

Introduction The Dome mine, in the Porcupine mining camp of northern Ontario, is one of the important gold mines of the country, having produced over 139 million dollars worth of gold from the commencement of production in '1910 to the end of 1944. The geology of the mine is complex and a number of types of ore are known, each occurring under particular conditions. The mine workings are very extensive and by far the greater part of them have been geologically mapped only in reconnaissance fashion. By 1940, when the writer joined the mine staff, the orebodies in the sedimentary trough and the 'nose' orebodies, the first types to be developed, were almost worked out and many workings were inaccessible, so the descriptions of these types are based largely on study of the plans and records. The same applies to a lesser extent to some other types. At various places in this paper, statements are made as to the mineralogical or chemical composition of the rocks. Most of these determinations are based on examinations made with a hand lens and cannot, therefore, be regarded as very reliable. General Geology As there are several types of ore in the mine, occurring under quite diverse conditions, a brief outline of the geology is given here, sufficient to provide a general picture into which the fuller descriptions given with each type of ore can be fitted.

Environmental monitoring plays a key role in coal mine safety. In recent years, significant advances have been made in the development of systems suitable for monitoring air in underground coal mines. Because of intensive mining and large capital outlay, the need for higher productivity consistent with safety is well recognized and it appears that environmental monitoring may help achieve this objective. This paper reviews the state-of- the-art in the monitoring technology with particular reference to hazardous gas detection in underground coal mines. The preliminary results obtained from ongoing studies, with regard to continuous monitoring of methane and carbon monoxide in mine air in some of the operations in Western Canada, are discussed. The inadequacies of the methods using spot samples are examined and the need to supplement the present practice with continuous monitoring systems is emphasized.

The deposit, which forms a ridge -adjacent to the York river, in Mont-eagle township, is held by Monteagle Minerals Limited, of Toronto. The ore is in a Precambrian gneiss which is composed of nepheline, scapolite, andesine and microcline feldspars, muscovite and biotite micas, and -corundum. The major orebody is tabular and is exposed for 1,200 feet along the crest of the ridge. It aver-ages about 90 feet in thickness, dips at about 70°, and was intersected by drilling at a vertical depth of 600 feet. The deposit was prospected for corundum in the early 1900's. Recent exploration was undertaken to deter-mine its potential as a source of high-alumina ceramic material, with by-product corundum and white mica. The program included prospecting, mapping, trenching, diamond drilling, bulk sampling, beneficiation research, a large-scale beneficiation test, product evaluation, market investigations, and plant design. Reserves, to a depth of about 300 feet, are estimated at about 3 million tons.

In the present investigation flotation was used as a diagnostic to understand the effects of changes to the media during the grinding stage. The observations from flotation for different media are discussed in terms of particle size distribution, water recovery, solid recovery and valuable mineral recovery. The chemical parameters; pH, redox potential (Eh) and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels were measured. A Base Metal Sulphide (BMS) ore was ground under media of different shapes and compositions to determine the effect of different rod/ball material on the flotation performance of the ore. For a given grind (D80 = 75 µm), media shape had no effect on flotation performance of a BMS ore. Different grinding media had significant effect on slurry chemical properties and flotation performance. Mild steel rods (RMMS) produced the highest solids recovery, nickel and pyrrhotite (Po) recovery, with the highest ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) extractable iron and the lowest DO level. Chrome steel balls and stainless steel rods produced the lowest metal recovery, EDTA extractable iron and the highest DO level. A complementary study was conducted to investigate the effect of using different grinding media compositions, viz, ceramic, forged steel, 15% chrome steel, stainless steel and a mixture of stainless steel and 15% chrome steel (50:50) balls were investigated using a Platinum Group Mineral (PGM), UG2 ore. Grinding products of five different media produced the same solids and water recovery, but the grades and recoveries of Platinum Group Elements (PGE) and chromite were different. Grinding products of ceramic media showed the best flotation performance, with the highest PGE recovery and the lowest Cr2O3 recovery. While grinding products of stainless steel balls (SS) produced the lowest PGE recovery and highest Cr2O3 grade and recovery in the concentrates.

"With the continuous depletion of high-grade tungsten ores, the low-grade refractory wolframite has become an important source for the tungsten industry. However, the large-scale utilization of low-grade refractory wolframite is disappointedly scarce, it is due to leanness of valuable minerals, complex mineral characterization and use of toxic collectors.The aim of this study was to develop an environment-friendly processing flowsheet, which was used for beneficiation of low-grade tungsten ore containing 0.45% WO3 from New Brunswick in Canada, and the content of arsenic is 0.68% in this materials. The objective of beneficiation studied was to obtain a concentration containing 60% WO3 with less than 0.5% of arsenic under the condition without any flotation reagents. In this environment-friendly processing flowsheet, magnetic separation technology, classification and gravity separation technology were combined and employed. Firstly, magnetic separation was employed for the first pre-concentration process, over 95% of the feed was rejected as the final tailings, meanwhile, over 85% of arsenic minerals were removed with tailings. Secondly, gravity separation tests were employed on the classified magnetic pre-concentrate in the second pre-concentration process, a second pre-concentrate with WO3 grade of 54.32% and As grade of 5.41% was obtained. Finally, two stage magnetic cleaning were conducted on the second pre-concentrate for upgrading the second pre-concentrate, the mostly arsenic and gangues were removed from the second pre-concentrate. Finally, this novel processing achieved an effective recovery of fine wolframite from low grade tungsten ore with high arsenic. A concentrate with WO3 grade of 64.81% were obtained in new opened processing flowsheet, and As grade was less than of 0.5% in this concentrate. Furthermore, remarkable feature of this processing flowsheet is environment-friendly due to avoid using the toxic flotation reagents during the whole mineral processing.INTRODUCTIONTungsten is an essential metal and is the most widely used in industrial production such as national defense, electro-mechanical products, textile and leather sectors (Srivastava et al., 2000).
