During the design of a new production facility for a greenfields or significant brownfields expansion many design decisions are made driven by an unquestioning objective to achieve 'lowest cash-cost' production costs. In many cases this translates to a design and operating philosophy based on largest-available, single-line equipment. Although acknowledged as an approach that is efficient from an operating cost perspective does this approach always maximise shareholder value? There is an increasing awareness in the mining industry of the value of project flexibility, robustness and value options. The design of a new production facility creates a window of opportunity which should be structured to ensure that project value options and robustness are understood and exploited. This requires the use of emerging valuation methodologies, such as Value-at-Risk and Real Options, as well as tried and trusted NPV/IRR approaches. The paper provides an overview of the basis and application of these less well known techniques in the context of metallurgical plant design. Design guidelines that demonstrate how value options and flexibility can be quantified from both a risk and value perspective are presented. Issues such as use of single versus multiple line equipment, optimum cut-off grade and improved exploitation of the inherent variability of the orebody are also examined. Finally the management issues and approaches to achieving this will be briefly discussed; for example it is common during project development to drive towards increasing certainty as rapidly as possible to facilitate 'accurate' estimation of costs. Understanding and exploiting value options requires a project culture that tolerates, and revels in, ambiguity and uncertainty û something that would make many project teams uncomfortable!

Systematic roof bolting in Australian coal mines began at Elrington Colliery in 19)49. Since that time the proportion of the roof supported by roof bolts has increased until, in 1970, 1.5 million were installed in Australian coal mines. This rapid growth of roof bolting has meant that the range and variety of roof bolting machines has altered also. The-number of machines now available both to bore holes and place roof bolts has increased. to the point where both rotary and per- cussive machines are used extensively. Generally, until the last four years, roof bolting machinery in Australia followed the practices in vogue in the United States. However, in -recent time the particular problems of Australian coal mining have necessitated the development of equipment primarily suitable to Australian conditions.

Recent advances in technology have allowed many of the problems of directional control of long diamond drill holes to be overcome. Three case histories are presented, from Cobar, Hilton North and Mount Isa Mine, in which careful hole design and the use of wedges and down-the-hole motors have allowed tight directional control of drilling. Three main genetic types of hematite can be recognised at Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF): Micaceous or schistose hematite derived by metamorphic/metasomatic process during regional metamorphism, increasing eastward, formed under temperatures ranging from 250¦C to 500¦C in CO2-rich aqueous carbonic, high- to medium-salinity fluids. Hematite in shear and mylonite zones, showing a wide variation of fluid and temperature conditions, between metamorphic and hydrothermal conditions. Deformed quartz-specular hematite veins formed during the late phases. Hydrothermal, compact and isotropic hematite developed during a brittle-ductile regime, forming the cement of the boudinage-kink breccia and jacutinga-type of gold mineralisation, under temperatures ranging from 80¦C to 140¦C in aqueous, low- to medium salinity, oxidant fluids, resulting from the interaction of meteoric and metamorphic/metasomatic fluids. Quartz-carbonate-sulfide veins were formed slightly later, through reducing fluids.

The Australian economy has been adversely affected by the hesitation in developing countries to commit to the construction of .new coal-fired power stations. World coal trade which was expected to grow at an appreciable rate has stagnated, world export coal prices have plummetted, and facilities in place in Australia for the production and export of coal are being underutilized. While in some countries this hesitation has been caused by a reduction in electricity load growth, another cause has been the unduly long lead-time imposed on developing countries by the conventional "Banker's Approach" to the planning and initiation of commitments to finance and construct coal-fired power plants. In some countries electricity growth has been met by increased usage of indigenous energy resources, even though this involves costs in excess of imported coal-fired power generation. The avoidance of foreign exchange commitments in these cases can however be desirable. In many other developing countries however, fuel oil continues to be used for power generation at a cost in foreign exchange of up to 50% above the total cost of coal fuel plus capital to construct a new coal-fired power station. The conventional "Bankers Approach" to new power station planning imposes the need for successive feasibility studies to satisfy the normal processes of international development lending agencies. No feasibility study can however, show how keen vendor countries may be to win major power plant contracts; and no feasibility study can determine whether the power station eventually procured will be one of the more reliable, at better than 80% availability, or one of the more unreliable at worse than 60% Availability.

Remapping of the Burdekin Basin has resulted in the subdivision of the three formations (megafacies) previously recognised in the Late Devonian Dotswood Group. Nine dominantly volcaniclastic facies are now identified within the three megafacies, representing coastal plain, floodplain lake, alluvial plain, ephemeral lake and alluvial fan depositional environments. The Dotswood Group was deposited during a major regressive phase that began at the end of the Givetian, continued throughout the Frasnian and ended in the early Famennian.The proposed depositional model completes a southeasterly progradation of coastal plain facies over shoreline and nearshore marine facies established in the underlying Fanning River Group. Uplift and associated acid-intermediate volcanism to the south of the Burdekin Basin, resulted in the deposition of a volcanogenic alluvial fan facies locally preserved along the southwestern margin of the basin. Tuffs and ?ignimbrite were deposited in widespread floodplain lakes which lay behind the coastal plain. An alluvial plain traversed by southward flowing rivers, formed the northern margin of the basin.

Systematic ICPES (Inductively coupled plasma emmission spectrometry) analysis of magnetic concentrates from drainage samples has been used to discriminate concentrates dominated by magnetite from those dominated by pisolites, presumably maghemite-rich. In addition, a set of spurious zinc enhancements was recognised and explained with the help of mineralogical data, and systematically isolated using chromium as a Discriminator.

During the period May to July 2003, East Mine overcored and recovered from goaf edges a total of 55 1.8 metre CVX grade bolts to analyse installation quality. Some 95 per cent of the pneumatically (hand-held Gophers) installed bolts show gloving, with 75 per cent showing gloving of at least one-third of the effective bolt length. Hydraulically installed (continuous miner-mounted bolting rigs) bolts show in some areas less gloving but do have significant unencapsulation lengths. Trials of newly developed bolt end profiles show considerable improvements in eliminating gloving but do show variable and unacceptable variations of unencapsulation.

Jarosites (KFe3(SO4)2(OH)6) are examples of minerals that are highly effective scavengers of toxic elements, and are abundant in acid rock drainage systems, acid sulfate soils, metallurgical wastes and other contaminated sites. The K, Fe and S sites can be filled by toxic elements such as Cd, Cu and Zn, but the mechanisms of this incorporation are not well understood.We have used atomistic simulation methods to model the jarosite (102) surface and its interactions with Cd, Zn and Cu, in order to understand the mechanisms by which these potentially toxic elements are incorporated into the K-jarosite structure. Our results suggest that incorporation via a defect complex consisting of an impurity cation at the K site charge balanced by a K vacancy stabilises the (102) surface in the order Cu>Zn>Cd.

Physical stress due to exertion, and exposure to heat and humidity in deep mines. 3. The toxic effects of various metals in the mining of ore. The most obvious are lead, mercury, arsenic and manganese. 4. Diseases associated with mining. These include leptospirosis, ankylostomiasis and mycotic infections of the skin. 5. In the early 1970s, Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR) embarked on a coal mine expansion program that was unparalleled in the history of the United States. With a small nucleus of people then operating two rapidly depleting captive mines, action was initiated to develop four of the deepest mines in the United States. Because of the depth of these mines, operational and technical problems were anticipated. However, because of the high quality of the coal (Blue Creek Seam), the financial risks involved were acceptable. The total investment to get the expansion program completed (to get the new mines to full capacity) would represent an investment of over US$ 500 million.By the end of the decade of the 1970s, the Company had grown to 2100 employees who were producing 1640,000 tonne of saleable coal per year, a productivity rate of 3.9 tonne per man-shift. This productivity rate was not sufficient to maintain a profitable, viable organisation. Therefore, if the operations were going to survive, it would be necessary to improve productivity tremendously, a task which would tax the resources and imagination of all employees.

This paper describes the results of investigations into the relationship between specific gravity and chemical composition in the Cockatoo Island orebody, In the early investigations the samples were classified into groups according to porosity. This resulted in high, medium and low porosity groups, the latter being further subdivided into ore and waste. Whole number tonnage factors were assigned to each group. In the later investigations the reciprocals of bulk specific gravity and true specific gravity were ex- pressed as linear combinations of iron, silica and alumina using stepwise regression. The mining, metallurgical, and petroleum industries can be viewed as financial or as social institutions or both. The differences between these two conceptions of their businesses will influence their environmental and social actions. During the next 10-20 years western industry will be subject to a drop in the growth of a more highly educated labour force and to the emergence of holistic economics, new national goals, and a new ecological perspective. The profitability of the mining industry may therefore be influenced by the human side of its business to a greater degree. The increas- ing human, social, and environmental responsibilities can be discharged by improving the miner's equip- ment; by learning to look at situations through the eyes of all those involved; by developing common `languages' which governments and the public can understand; and by mediating where feasible on the international scene.

Accident prevention in industry is a task as important to the ultimate result of an undertaking as efficient machines, good tools or trained operatives. In fact, like many qther phases of industry today, "Accident Prevention" or "Safety Organisation" has developed in this century, to a degree that is now acknowledged as an integral part of industrial thought and planning. This has not always been the case, as the following snap-shot picture of the past illustrates.The Broken Hill Proprietary Company recently celebrated at Whyalla the Jubilee of the opening of the Iron Knob Tramway. On that occasion a dinner was tendered to the pioneers, and in talking to the Writer of the early days one of the old gentlemen present could not refrain from recounting some of the accidents he had seen or experienced.Several such incidents were recounted at length, after each, the old fellow would say, "An' there weren't no safety officers or compensation in them days".The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited was a pioneer of safety in Australian industry and considerable success has followed its activity in this connection; the accident rate of the steel industry now compares satisfactorily with that of any other industrial undertaking. A measure of 'the success of the safety organisation, is, that in recent years, despite extensive construction programmes at various centres, and despite a heavy labour turnover, a decreasing accident rate has been maintained.
