The exploitation of primary ores using cave mining caused new challenges at the El Teniente mine that required changes to a number of conventional cave mining practices. For example, in the 1970s and 1980s, panel caving was introduced to manage certain geotechnical and operational conditions. Today, El Teniente mine is facing new challenges associated with deep cave mining and establishing its New Mine Level (NML) project, which is located 240 m below the Esmeralda operating cave.The engineering and development phases for this new project have been largely based on experience and lessons learned throughout the history of primary ore exploitation at El Teniente mine, particularly knowledge about seismicity control, the management of collapses and operational practices. For example, previous experience demonstrated that seismicity could be managed by preconditioning using large-scale hydraulic fracturing (HF). HF has been systematically applied in the column of ore above the undercut planned for the NML project and below the production or extraction level, where the main ventilation and haulage infrastructure are to be located.This paper discusses how this has been achieved and is based on previous experience of preconditioning using HF, which has been applied in the selection and management of exploitation techniques and associated planning strategies and design parameters for the NML project.CITATION:Pardo, C and Rojas, E, 2016. The Porgera gold deposit is an epithermal gold base-metal deposit located in the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold-silver-sphalerite-galena-pyrite mineralisation is related to stocks and dykes of dioritic composition which have intruded a series of folded marine sediments, mainly shales and siltstones, often with calcareous and carbonaceous horizons, of middle Jurassic to middle Eocene age. The most intensely mineralised zone is at Waruwari Hill, where the mineralisation occurs predominantly as massive mixed sulphide veins, and less frequently as quartz-chlorite veins and as disseminations. Mineralisation occurs in all rock types and several phases of mineralisation have been recognised.

The design of primary sample cutters for high-capacity conveyors is critical to achieving a correct sample, both in collecting the sample and ensuring smooth sample discharge flow. Modelling usually occurs at the design stage and requires extensive experience to achieve the correct result. However, it is difficult to confirm the effectiveness of the cutter design until after installation. Even with high-speed video, confirmation of complete sample capture is difficult, especially if the material characteristics change over time. Recent investigation using discrete element method (DEM) simulation to model the flow of the ore into the cutter and observe how it interacts with the cutter has revealed some interesting design requirements not observed in the past. By including DEM modelling, the correct design and optimisation of the cutter can be more accurately determined prior to commissioning.CITATION:Hidding, M and Shaw, R, 2017. Massive hematite ore (MHO) is a special high-grade iron ore used as lump ore in the process of obtaining direct reduced iron (DRI). The influence of porosity on the reducibility was investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopes. Hematite is the main component of the samples and occurs as granular crystals (10 ¦m), microplates (1 ¦m) and euhedral martite (10 to 30 ¦m). Quartz, maghemite, kenomagnetite and goethite are minor components. Primary micropores (+ to 1 ¦m) are associated with microplaty crystals that fill cavities between granular hematite. Secondary micropores (+ to 5 ¦m) related to euhedral martite crystals are the most important. The total porosity of weathered samples, measured using nitrogen adsorption and mercury injection, attains values up to 18 per cent, whereas unweathered samples have a porosity less than 2.5 per cent. Varajpo et al, 2002 showed that reducibility is strongly enhanced by porosity and this work shows that reducibility can be indirectly evaluated by bulk density.

Environmental information is an essential part of successful mine design and approval. In order to be most effective in its application and availability, this information needs to be collected in programmes with defined objectives and deadlines. Applied Geology Associates have established a methodology to facilitate the structured collection of environmental data, which provides for the diverse needs of both engineering design and applications for statutory and non-statutory approvals. Principal aspects of this methodology are the scope, timing and management of the environmental studies within the overall project planning framework.

A drive, 3,500 ft long, was planned to explore mineralization exposed by diamond drilling. A rate of advance of 150 ft per fortnight, approximately double previous Broken Hill rates, was required. Subsequent to the completion of this drive its extension for a further 6,200 ft was planned to provide a main haulage way along which ore could be transported from a newly acquired lease back to the main hoisting shaft, a total distance of 13,500 ft.This paper describes the working conditions, relationships, manning and costs, and gives details of the cycle and equipment used to achieve rates up to 170 ft per fortnight.OBJECTIVEDiamond drilling from the 1,000 ft level at the Delprat Shaft section had indicated that the zone of mineralization, about 150 ft wide, which had been explored on the 1,000 ft level for a length of 2,600 ft, continued downwards with a westerly dip. The drilling results showed that within this wide zone there were arrower lenses of mineralization of possibly payable grade (see composite plan, Fig. 1).Diamond drill holes of 2,000 ft and over, particularly through heavily sheared areas of sericite schist, had been found to be costly, slow, and inadequate in testing the potential and trends of these smaller concentrations of mineralization.It was therefore decided that an exploratory drive should be advanced from the northern limit of the 1,480 ft level into the western mineralization, and that from this drive diamond drill holes should be drilled at dose intervals to outline the ore.The 1,480 ft level was chosen for the following reasons.1. It had the greatest northerly reach of the accessible levels at No. 7 Shaft section below the 1,000 ft horizon and therefore would enable the test to be made most quickly.

The grade of ore at Marvel Loch mine is directly related to the presence or absence of shear zones and quartz-sulfide-rich hornblende (¦ diopside) veining within areas of plagioclase alteration. An experienced geologist can identify these features in hand specimen. Practical rules have been developed to assist this visual identification. The structural sites and styles of alteration and veining most conducive to gold mineralisation have also been determined. The work has enabled a better understanding of the geological controls on mineralisation at Marvel Loch, and has clarified geological understanding for optimisation of grade control modeling, ore block mark-ups, and minimisation of ore loss and dilution during excavation. In addition to this, it has enabled a detailed understanding of mine scale structural controls, geometry and relative grade relationships.

IN the construction of a set of ordinary mine plans, two axes or coordinates are used; also, two different projections are essential viz., a plan (horizontal projection) and longitudinal section (vertical projection). In isometric projection three axes are employed-one axis vertical and the remaining two inclined to it at angles of 120°, also making an angle of 120° with one another, as shown in Fig. 1. The two inclined axes are used to plot the horizontal projection, while altitudes are plotted on the vertical axis. As an illustration, consider the ease of a simple object, such as a box. To show all the dimensions in the usual manner requires two drawings-a plan and elevation, as in Fig 2.

Plant based on the New Jersey refluxing process was installed at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corporation Pty. Ltd. to refine portion of the zinc output from the Imperial Smelting furnace.Refining of impure zinc is effected by distillation in two stages in vertical columns comprising a series of superimposed silicon carbide trays designed such that ascending zinc vapours and descending liquid metal are in intimate contact. In the first stage, portion of the zinc and its cadmium content are distilled from impure feed metal, condensed, and while still molten, fed to the second column in which zinc is boiled under controlled refluxing conditions to remove the cadmium content.The resultant zinc has a purity in excess of 99·995 per cent zinc.The availability of refined zinc has made possible the production of a number of zinc alloys for marketing in addition to the basic grades of zinc.

This paper reviews the development and operation of a small underground tin mine in NE Tasmania. Tin mineralisation was discovered in the Lottah area in the 1880s with early alluvial and eluvial workings leading to the development of large low grade open pit operations. Apart from short lived activities operations ceased in 1915. Intensive exploration in 1978 - 1981 outlined substantial tonnages of low grade tin mineralisation (0.2% Sn) of open pit material. An underground ore body was also located (800 000 tonnes 0.6 per cent Sn). Spectrum Resources Australia Pty Limited acquired a 98 per cent interest in the property in 1988. Mine and mill development began in early 1989 based on an underground mine utilising trackless mining using room and pillar with fill stoping. The milling circuit involves primary jaw crushing, Barmac secondary crushing to 1 mm, Mogensen and DSM screens with jigs and tables to make a wet concentrate. Final tin concentrates are produced by high tension and magnetic separation. Planned production rates are 500 t/day with a mine life of six to seven years.

As in other countries, gold mining inNew Zealand has been cyclic in character. Looking at these cycles may provide insights as to what may occur in the future and that is the basis for this study.   New Zealand has experienced four gold mining cycles. The first began in 1857, peaked in 1866 and terminated in 1890. This cycle was characterised by alluvial gold mining by individuals and small groups. This is referred to as the Labour Led cycle. The second cycle began in 1890 and reached its peak in 1906 and terminated in 1929. This cycle was characterised by the use of dredges in alluvial gold mining and was also the peak of hard rock mining. This cycle is referred to as the Technology Led Cycle. The third cycle peaked in 1940. This cycle was far less significant than the previous cycles, arising out of the depression when the unemployed embarked on small scale alluvial mining. This overprinted the continuing decline that occurred after 1906. This cycle is here referred to as the Depression Overprint Cycle.   The fourth cycle began in 1984 when production began to climb rapidly from a very low base. The growth in production was spurred by rising gold prices in the early 1980s resulting in relatively low grade gold-bearing alluvial ground becoming economic. But in the 1990s, production from the new hardrock mines in Coromandel and Otago has overshadowed alluvial production. This cycle is here referred to as the Price Led cycle.   What are the future prospects for gold in New Zealand? Although there are many factors involved, this will be largely determined by two factors; firstly, continued access to prospective gold-bearing properties, and secondly, the price of gold. Based on these factors, three future industry scenarios have been developed. The first of these is industry collapse, in which access to prospective property is constrained and prices mayor may not weaken. The second is industry consolidation, in which the available ground is accumulated by a small number of large companies who can use economies of scale to weather price fluctuations. The third scenario is industry growth, in which access to prospective ground is constrained in environmentally sensitive areas but is otherwise relatively unconstrained. Efficient companies are allowed to work in a policy and economic framework that allows them to make a major contribution to the economy.   While the industry cannot control these critical factors, a good knowledge of the positive role gold mining could play in the future economy may provide a framework by which the access issue, in particular, may be addressed from a balanced perspective.

A comprehensive analysis of rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging: interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcore is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure. Both solution types rely on constant orientations (orientational stability) of the selected structure, but the internal solution actually provides its own test of orientational stability. External solutions are the norm in outcropping situations and internal solutions are invaluable in blind situations. In blind situations sequential "internal then external" solutions can be used respectively to provide a reference structure and then use this for subsequent external solutions at individual points downhole. Blind prospects can now be drilled and interpreted as easily as outcropping prospects. Each solution type has its own optimum requirements. External solutions are ambiguous for certain orientational relationships between the drillhole and the reference structure (for example, a perpendicular relationship), hence drillholes in which external solutions are planned should be designed to avoid these orientations. Internal solutions are ambiguous for straight drill paths, and are most unambiguously resolved when the drill path attains maximum drillhole dimensionality, that is, it occupies a wide variety of orientations in 3D space; hence drillholes in which internal solutions are planned should be designed as combinations of non-parallel holes or as individual strongly curved holes. For both solution types an understanding of the kind of structural fertility required leads to intelligent design of drill paths, which is termed structural drill targeting. It is distinct from spatial drill targeting, which is the process which defines and (x,y,z) point-or volume-target. Effective design of drilling programs requires both structural and spatial targeting. The external and internal solutions for vectorial parameters are implemented via (1) visual (qualitative), (2) stereographic, or (3) core orienting frame procedures. Each of these has its own advantages. Stereographic procedures have been simplified via the erection of a drillcore reference frame in which three fundamental angles are defined, and the formulation of an all-inclusive set of stereographic recipes for determining orientations from the measurement of these angles. Non- vectorial structural parameters comprise an ad hoc array of useful measures which are simply described by numbers. Examples are angles between structures, and density of structures. Such parameters (some of which provide useful vectors toward ore bodies) are invaluable in drillcore because they can be measured and recorded rapidly, without determining the orientation of the core. In a summary, non-oriented drillcore can now be structurally mapped exactly as if it were outcrop. Interpretation of the significant volume of unique structural information which is beginning to flow from this system can be optimised by using, in addition to the conventional cross section and longditudinal section, three new modes of presentation. The natural cross section is that section in space normal to a principal structure of interest. It is a section in which it is advisable to drill to obtain certain structural information, and in which the results need to be presented. A newly defined unique cross sectional orientational symbol is recommended for dramatic improvement in the quality of information presented in cross sections. Stacked level maps are a powerful adjunct to cross sections.

Gold is extracted by cyanidation of a sulphide-rich concentrate at Macraes mine, and after cyanidation, the concentrate is discharged to tailings impoundments. The concentrate tailings were discharged to a dedicated concentrate impoundment from 1989 to 1993, afterwhich they were blended with the flotation tailings. Since mid-1998, concentrate tailings have been redirected to the dedicated concentrate impoundment. The concentrate tailings contain up to 1 ppm gold, and will be reprocessed in the future. However, it is a regulatory requirement that a contingency plan be in place to rehabilitate the concentrate tailings should the mine operation cease for any reason. Initial predictions suggested that the sulphide-rich tailings would oxidise and acidify, creating a potential long term environmental problem. Investigations of the state of the tailings after 4 years show that these predictions were overly conservative. Only minor oxidation has occurred in the upper 2 metres of the tailings where the pH has locally dropped from 10 (discharge condition) to between 7 and 8. Below 2 metres, the tailings are essentially unchanged from their deposition state. The low rate of change in the tailings is due to their very low permeability which in turn is a consequence of the fine grain size (ca. 15 ¦m). Dewatering is extremely slow, and incursion of oxygenated water is negligible. Calculations suggest that water movement over 30 m will take at least 100 years and possibly 1000 years. The contingency plan is to capitalise on the very low permeability and keep the tailings from drying with a semipermeable cap. A layer of limestone will be added to the top of the tailings, beneath the cap, to enhance alkalinity of any percolating water. If acidification does occur, contrary to expectations, any acid produced will be neutralised by underlying calcite-bearing schist, schist in the concentrate impoundment wall, and the flotation tailings immediately downstream. In addition, dilution by alkaline ground and surface waters would further ameliorate any acidic discharge.

In particular, sustainable development is becoming increasingly recognised as a critical issue for the oil and gas industry to address and act upon. The ore treatment expansion programme at Mount Isa Mines required the erection of a new lead-zinc concentrator to be known as No. 2 Concentrator. This concentrator was designed by Western-Knapp Engineering Company in conjunction with staff of Mount Isa Mines Limited. Metallurgical design followed conventional wet milling practice, but the size of many plant units is larger than previously used at Mount Isa. The. total capacity of the new plant is 150,000 tons per four weekly period, and the plant is designed to operate in two equal parallel sections.Erection was contracted on a turnkey basis, and the plant was commissioned as a production unit on 23rd June 1966.The existing concentrator, No. I, was converted to treat all copper ore, and the total capacity of the two plants is now 390,000 tons per four weekly period.

ArcelorMittal Mining has a global portfolio of 14 iron ore operating units across Brazil, Bosnia, Canada, Kazakhstan, Liberia, Mexico, Ukraine and the United States. Iron ore products include concentrate for sintering and pelletising, pellets, directly shipped fines and lump ore. This paper presents an overview of ArcelorMittal iron ore mines including iron ore typologies and the annual production of each unit. Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

Megascopic and microscopic studies of cleats and mining induced cleavage in Ihe first workings at Leichhardt Colliery reveal the presence of four distinct fracture sets. Microscopic studies confirm underground observations of the fracture sets.The most likely order of formation of the fractures is (i) "butt" cleats (ii) facc cleats (iii) shallow dipping faults (iv) mining induced cleavage. Three fracture sets apparently formed by tensiIe failure. Microscopy shows that the mining induced cleavage surfaces have preferred starting or lerminating points at the extremity of a "butt" cleat and a vitrite-dull coal band boundary. It is postulated that the induced cleavage begins at 'butt' cleats which behave as Griffith flaws under high compression around Leichhardt Colliery faces. Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas are associated with only those workings which are affected by mining induced cleavage and occur at or adjacent to working faces.
