The kinetics of desorption of nitrogen from molten iron were investigated using the electromagnetic levitation technique. The respective influences of gas flow rate and surface active element (S) were examined. A second order behaviour with respect to the nitrogen concentration in the melt prevailed at all experimental conditions. Sulphur had a marked inhibiting effect on the desorption rate. The experimental results on the rates of nitrogen desorption have been interpreted with the aid of a reaction mechanism consisting of a sequence of elementary steps.

Research into the control of diesel particulates (DP) has been. conducted by BHP Coal for more than 7 years. Personal monitoring of employee exposures (n = 480 full shift samples) conducted at nine underground coal mines has indicated that the exposure of the workforce ranges from less than 0.1 to 2.2 mg/m3 of DP dependent on job type and mining operation. Approximately 50% of the mass of DP captured is elemental carbon (EC) which is the species currently being considered by some international regulatory authorities as the exposure standard. Five technologies for controlling DP were investigated in a combination of studies conducted in an above ground simulated tunnel, in a special controlled section of underground mine roadway and validated by application in standard coal mining operations at Tower Colliery. Tests conducted under controlled conditions indicate that dependent on the type of fuel in use, the introduction of low sulphur fuels can reduce DP levels in return airways by up to 50% and in actual mining situations a reduction of 20% can be achieved in exposure of the workforce. In addition, subjective responses from the workforce indicate that exhaust emissions from low sulphur fuels provide lower irritation and a more pleasant aroma. The use of water filled scrubber tanks reduces the level of DP emissions by 25%. Chemical decoking of engines resulted in a reduction of 20% in DP in return airways. A commercially available non-flammable disposable dry exhaust filter constructed from synthetic organic fibres with an operational lifetime in excess of 20 hours was found to reduce DP exhaust emissions by 80%. Investigations have indicated that the use of increased ventilation to control DP levels particularly in multiple vehicle situations does not follow a simple dilution factor and in some instances compliance with current regulatory requirements may not produce the required reduced exposure levels. The results from single component control strategies provide considerable reduction in exposure to DP, however the most efficient and cost effective control methodology is the use of a combination of individual systems modelled to operations conducted at each mine.

The Department of Resource Industries regulates and oversees safety and environmental standards for the mining and related industries in Queensland, and provides scientific support through its effort in the geosciences.The geoscientific data base accumulated over more than 120 years is very large. Therefore, accessibility to and utilisation of the data base in the most effective manner is an issue to be addressed in terms of modern information technology. The Department has developed a strategy whose implementation is progressing rapidly.

The concentrating plant of the Broken Hill South Limited was described in Proceedings No. 44, Australasian Institute Mining and Metallurgy, December, 1921, by Wainwright and Read. It was erected on the present site in 1907 and 1908.From that date, the plant has undergone various alterations consistent with metallurgical improvements. By 1925, the timber work of the gravity secti"on had seriously deteriorated, so much so, that, when the machinery was working, the floors and supports vibrated badly, causing heavy maintenance costs.In 1928, it was decided to erect a new gravity-treatment section, to be followed later by a new flotation section.

The commercial success of a mining project can be strongly influenced by the business activity which takes place away from the mine site. The project revenue is determined by marketing success which results from persistent research and full realisation of suitable products and by-products and appropriate upgrading achieved in conjunction with proper material security and insurance. Significant costs of transport can be optimised, protection of the environment carefully managed and skilled employees acquired as a valuable asset. Working capital requirements are often substantial and should be carefully established and financed, possibly by special contractual arrangements for product sales.

Worthy of note in Miss Bailey's paper are her comments on the attitudes of mining companies and their managers where women were employed, she says, "..another possible pitfall is reverse discrimination where in an effort to avoid being branded as having shown a person favouritism, supervisors end up treating the person in a manner much less than they deserve. This is manifested in denying an employee such things as challenging work, educational opportunities, promotions, or in the case of staff, fair merit increases." and further she says, "It has been observed that the treatment of women in non-traditional roles such as mining is different than for men in the same environment. There are people who treat women worse and some who treat them better simply because they are of the other sex." These statements may sound unjustified to today's audience, and whilst we need to credit pioneering women with having tolerated, understood and worked towards improving the mining culture, the move towards total inclusion of women in the workplace is still growing.

The implementation of the Mining Further Amendment) Act, 1970, and later the Coal Mining Act, 1973, placed a requirement on the Department of Mines to accept an initiative in relation to coal exploration and coal mine development which does not apply in the case of other minerals. It is necessary to consider the exploration of the total coal resources of the State when considering exploration rather than one individual basin or deposit. If the level of knowledge of the coal resources in these basins is considered in relation to their potential for development it is possible to allocate broad scale priorities to their assessment. Due to the enormity of the task which involves a conservative estimate of in excess of 400 000 m of drilling to reach a broad reconnaissance level of understanding the involvement of industry with the Department in the exploration programme is necessary. Pasminco Century MineÆs slurry pipeline was commissioned in November 1999. It currently transports zinc and lead concentrate slurries in batch form to the Port facility, 304 km away in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Pipeline and the Port have gone through several stages of continuous improvement to match the successful ramp-up of the concentrator. Improvements in the Pipeline and Port Operations have included: commissioning of the first slurry pipeline that delivers two products in the same pipeline in batch mode; management of batches throughout the pipeline and port system to minimise cross contamination of both concentrates; operation of the slurry pipeline to achieve high availability of the system; operation of the pump station interfaced with preventive maintenance to minimise unplanned shutdowns; continuous monitoring of pressures throughout the single-station, 304 km slurry pipeline; redesign of the Rotary screw feeder; redesign of the Dryer Control System; installation of a larger Induced Draft Fan; optimisation of the dryer internals to achieve a product of narrow size distribution and pellet integrity; redesign of the stockpile ventilation system; and the development of a surface sealant. This paper describes the early commissioning of both the Port and the Pipeline and the continuous learning and Quality Improvement Project initiated at the Port to focus on concentrate quality given the propensity of the fine concentrate to self-heat during storage.

The break-away from the traditional labour intensive mining methods improves both safety and productivity significantly. The evolutionary process followed to establish the final mining method design provides insight behind the finished product, and the modern approach to the planning and service principles equips the reader with a suite of mining engineering ideas.

Full aerodynamic design development of the proposed fans for the enlarged primary ventilation system at Mount Isa Mines Limited was initiated before tender specifications were prepared. Theoretical and analytical design studies were made of many possibilities to determine the optimum proposal. Major considerations were efficiency, simplicity, standardization, and mechanical feasibility. Model testing and experimental work covered blading design, inlet shape, diffuser and tail fairing dimensions, instrumentation requirements, ancl noise studies.Theoretical and predicted performance estimates were prepared for the three 20 ft diameter vertically mounted axial flow fans.

Thrusting is well documented in the Finisterre/Sarawaget moun- tains, the Kainantu-Waf district and in the Highlands between the Kubor Anticline and the Ramu Valley, Papua New Guinea. The thrusts trend NW and involve rocks ranging in age from Permo-Triassic to Plio-Pleistocene. Evidence from the Finisterre/ Sarawaget mountains demonstrates that a major phase of thrust- ing commenced in Pliocene times and continues today. Palaeostress analyses is a sensitive technique for assessing the kinematic history of faulting. The picture gained from the Finisterre/Sarawaget mountains, the Kainantu district and be- tween Kundiawa and Keglsugl is simple, involving a north to northeast ol. Local complexities between the upper Chimbu Valley and Brahmin indicate extension on a NW-N trend. The simplicity of this anlaysis, which accords with seismic and geo- detic strain data, shows that the major faulting in Papuan Orogen is no different from that in the Papuan Fold Belt; that the Papuan Orogen and the Papuan Fold Belt together form a young thrust- fold complex; and that such structures as the Kubor Anticline may be fault-bend folds. Recognition of the obduction of the Finisterre/Sarawaget reef/ volcanic complex over the Australian plate, the gas seeps in the Ramu Valley and foothills of the Finisterre/Sarawaget Mountains, oil seeps in the Goroka and Kundiawa regions, and our interpre- tation of the PNG Orogen as part of the Papuan Fold Belt indi- cates unexpected probability that the PNG Highlands are pro- spective for hydrocarbons.

In 1874 a stockman, JE Wright of Foxlow Station, recognised copper mineralisation when he was about 12 kilometres south of the station. The find was on the banks of the Molonglo River. Several small mines were soon operating along the ridge above the river, and the village of Captain's Flat was established.One mining company established in the 1880s was Lake George Mines. It's name was to remain synonomous with the name of the town until mining and treatment ceased on 11 March 1962.

A multi-layer feed-forward neural network was trained (using the error back-propagation algorithm) to learn a subset of rules designed to stabilise the performances of the copper flotation section of a complex sulphide processing plant and then tested in order to evaluate its expert performances. Two types of neural networks were compared: the classical ones, fully connected between one layer and the adjacents (with different architectures), and entropy networks, partially connected and generated according to a methodology that simplifies its building up. The advantages and drawbacks of both were analysed and compared with classic (rule based) expert systems.

Dump leaching began at Teller in late-1988 at a rate of 4 MTPA and has been progressively expanded to the present rate of 10 MTPA. Teller's on-going commitment to dump leaching is driven by the amenability of gold ores to the process and the availability of large tonnages of low grade gold ore. The sequence of evaluating ores for dump leaching involves rolling bottle tests on coarsely ground ore, followed by small and large column leaching and finally trial heaps. Trial heap tests are very expensive and an alternative approach to this is large diameter column leaching.A four-column permanent facility was built at Teller to specifically evaluate the leaching characteristics of new dump leach ores. Details of construction, operation and dismantling are discussed in the paper. Capital cost for the four column facility was some $45 940, while operating costs are about $24 800 per column.

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a large country of over 1 000 000 square kilometres situated on the Atlantic coast of north-west Africa. It is bounded to the north by Western Sahara and Algeria, to the east by Mali, and to the south by Mali and Senegal. With the exception of a narrow strip in the south along the Senegal River valley, the country lies entirely within the Sahara. The north of the country is largely devoid of vegetation, and it is estimated that 90 per cent of the population of 2.1 million people live in the southern quarter of the country. From about the turn of the century, Mauritania was ruled by the French from Dakar in Senegal and, until 1960 when it obtained independence from the French, Mauritania did not have a capital. Today, the capital is Nouakchott, home to an estimated 600 000 Moors of mixed Arab, Berber and African descent. After independence in 1960, disputes over Spanish Sahara to the north led to a military coup in 1978 and it was not until 1991 that a democratic constitution was adopted. The new constitution declares Mauritania to be an `Islamic, African, and Arab Republic.' It provides for an executive president, elected for a six-year term, and for a bicameral legislature, consisting of a national assembly and a senate. The first presidential and legislative elections were held in 1992 under United Nations' supervision. Mauritania's economy is predominantly pastoral, and the country depends heavily on foreign aid. Its principal export industries are iron ore mining (about ten million tonnes per annum from mines near Fderik in the north) and fishing. Mines d'Or d'Akjoujt SA (MORAK), a company in which General Gold Resources NL (GGR) has 42.5 per cent equity, produces over 50 000 ounces of gold per annum, which represents the third largest export industry in the country.

The Mesozoic intrusive rocks in southeastern coastal China can be divided into three intrusive suites, and they can be brought into corresponding with four cycles of volcanic activity. This paper describes their time-space relation with volcanic rocks, and their geochemical characteristics. Data from the Mesozoic volcanic-intrusive. complex rocks in Eastern Zheijiang, Eastern Fujiang and Eastern Guangdong show distinct regional differences, both within and tectonomagmatic activity regions. The southeastern coast of China involves four tectonomagmatic activity regions. They have many differences on the nature of magma source regions, activity patterns of magma, time-space distribution, petrography and petrographic facies association of volcanic and intrusive rock and mineralization.

A broad zone of intra-plate volcanism occurs for some 3000 km along the E. Australian coastal regions, extending from far northern Queensland southwards to Tasmania, westwards to western Victoria, and into southeastern South Australia. The age range, taken over the whole region, extends from Eocene to Holocene. Wellman & McDougall (1974) recognised the occurrence of three distinct types of volcanic occurrences: (a) Lava field provinces, dominantly basaltic and commonly strongly undersaturated, but of variable size. Large lava fields are especially exemplified by the younger provinces in northern Queensland (e.g. Nulla, McBride), and western Victoria. (b) Central volcano provinces, in which a reasonably well defined volcanic edifice is discernable. Such provinces are built of mildly undersaturated to saturated mafic lavas, but are also characterised by felsic volcanism (and often substantial mafic and felsic intrusive phases). Examples are the Springsure-Minerva Hills province, the Tweed and Focal Peak Shields (southeastern Queensland to northeastern N.S.W.), and the Nandewars, Warrumbungles, and Canobolas volcanic centres (N.S.W.). (c) A single leucitite province in N.S.W. Wellman and McDougall (1974) were able to show that the central volcano provinces exhibit a remarkably regular southward age migration pattern, the calculated migration rate being 66 + 5 mm yr , and these authors interpreted this in terms of the northward passage of the Australian plate across a fixed 'hotspot' within the upper mantle. The leucitite province also fits this migration pattern. The lava field provinces apparently exhibit more erratic regional age distribution patterns, but Sutherland (1981) has interpreted the data in terms of a multiple 'hotspot' model. Organic dyes such as nigrosine and sun yellow act as depressants for carbonaceous particles in the, flotation of sulphide ores. Depression is achieved when initially hydrophobic organic surfaces are made hydrophilic by preferential adsorption of dye molecules. Experimental studies, mainly on Mount Isa ores, indicate that dyes are adsorbed as planar anionic micelles attached to carbonaceous surfaces by van der Waals and ion exchange attractive interactions. Relationships appear to exist between the amount of organic matter on the surface of ground particles, the surface area of the particles, the "saturation" adsorptions of dyes, and the degree of difficulty experienced during froth flotation.

Increasingly, mineral operations need to manage water as a key business asset. Managing water solely as an environmental issue leaves a business exposed to social, cultural and economic risks associated with water. Adopting a company-wide strategic approach, which takes account of the true value of water will provide businesses with opportunities and risk protection. Rio Tinto has recognised the business imperative for water stewardship and has responded by producing the Rio Tinto Water Strategy. This strategy commits the company to managing water assets in a responsible manner, taking account of environmental, social and economic values. To incorporate the true value of water in site decision making, a new set of tools is required at the operational level. A key part of the strategy focuses on developing a framework to value water based on case study examples from around the Group. This paper presents progress on the companyÆs experiences in developing and implementing the water strategy.

Among the various methods of thick-seam mining already well-tried in practice longwall caving with extraction of a single slice, as thick as possible, abandoning the top and/or the bottom coal, seems to be the most suitable one for the Australian coal mining industry. The production units of the future should be equipped with heavy double-drum shearer-loaders, wide armoured conveyors, (with one or two central chains) and shield support. Material of this type has been developed for seams up to 6 m thick. Output figures of more than 6,000 tROM/d from a single face can be looked upon as a quite realistic expectation. The problems of co-ordinating such large production units with the whole layout of the mine are discussed. The factors to be taken into account in the planning work and for preven- tion of mine fires caused by spon- taneous combustion are dealt with. For economic reasons the highest possible utilization factor of the very expensive equipment must be aimed at. Furthermore, the seams or parts of seams to be extracted should be carefully selected.
