Recent whole-rock geochemical data from nearly 900 fresh drill core and underground samples taken from seven central Victorian gold deposits confirm the presence of distinct and identifiable primary alteration haloes surrounding the deposits. Ferroan carbonate alteration extends for up to several hundred metres away from turbidite-hosted gold mineralisation outside of contact metamorphic aureoles. A less distinct phyllic alteration zone can be identified using geochemical molar ratios or short wave infrared analysis. It generally overlaps a sulfidic halo characterised by disseminated pyrite and in close proximity to mineralised structures, arsenopyrite. The extent of the sulfidic halo can be traced using low-level analysis of pathfinder elements such as S, Au, As and Sb. Recognition of these alteration features enlarges the target for exploration and provides a tool by which drilling can be directed towards mineralised structures. In the course of the last ten years the development of the mining industry in the Czech Republic has been influenced by the pushing through of economic and ecological criteria. Due to this coal mining was ended in the whole series of the underground coal mines. These mines become the source of ecological and safety risks û methane leakage, surface deformation, etc. The way of solving of these problems is by stowing of underground spaces, and also surface fault basins with the help of mixtures produced from industrial wastes. The presupposition of this procedure is knowledge of prescriptions for production of the mixtures, and of the economic advantageousness of carrying out these activities. This contribution pays attention to the utilisation of power-gypsum as a raw material in the production of mining-construction materials.

The aspect ratio (mill diameter/mill length) of autogenous and semi autogenous mills varies widely and can be as high as three or as low as 0.5. The literature on the subject of what effect aspect ratio has on grinding mill performance or energy efficiency is almost non-existent. However, at the design stage of many grinding circuits the subject is often vigorously debated amongst metallurgists. In this paper the performance characteristics of mills with different aspect ratios are examined to determine whether process performance characteristics are a function of aspect ratio and whether high aspect ratio mills are any more or less energy efficient than low aspect ratio units. Data from both pilot and full-scale mills are used for this purpose in open and closed circuit configurations.

The Mt Whaleback iron ore mine is located adjacent to Newman, approximately 1200 km north of Perth, in the Pilbara District of Western Australia. Approximately 15 per cent of the waste materials are in the zones with high concentrations of sulfide and carbonaceous minerals and are referred to as æreactive shaleÆ. The reactive shale has the potential to undergo self-heating and can react with the ammonium nitrate (AN) based explosives used in mining operations, resulting in spontaneous combustion and spontaneous explosion. The sulfide-rich shales also have the potential to produce acid rock drainage (ARD). In the present study, over 200 shale samples have been collected from different locations in the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine, including blasthole drill cuttings, fresh mine faces and waste dumps. These samples have been systematically characterised for their geochemical properties. Based on the characterisation results, a pH test was developed as a cost-effective, fast and efficient tool for the assessment of reactive ground in the mining industry. This paper summarises the results of the sample characterisations and discusses the key findings arising from the interpretation of results. These results have significant implications in the safe storage of the reactive shales and the prevention of spontaneous explosion, spontaneous combustion and ARD.

THE reduction of iron from the ferric to the ferrous state prior to its titration by permanganate or dichromate may give erroneous results in the presence of other reducible metals such as titanium. Stannous chloride and metallic zinc both reduce tetravalent titanium to a lower form, and so increase the consumption of the oxidizing standard: solution. Sulphuretted hydrogen and sulphurous acid do not reduce titanium, but are slow in action and troublesome to manipulate.Sulphuretted hydrogen is considered to be the best reducing agent for iron in the presence of titanium.* In the method to be described the advantages of the H 2S reduction are retained without the disadvantages of using the gas. The reduction is carried out by the action of a metallic sulphide having a solubility product of such a value that the sulphide iom, are utilized as fast as they are formed, and but little free sulphuretted hydrogen is given off.Cadmium sulphide was the first to be tried, but its solubility product (3.6 x 10 - 2~)t was apparently too low. The reduction was satisfactory, but the excess was very difficult to remove. Zinc sulphide (S.P. = 1.2 x 10 - 23) was found to be quite satisfactoryin both respects. The zinc sulphide is preferably used in the form of an emulsion prepared from pure zinc sulphate as follows: About 100 grm. of ZnS047H20 is dissolved in 2 litres of water. H2S is passed until no further precipitate is obtained, the acid formed being barely neutralized from time to time by the addition of ammonia. The precipitation of the sulphide in a slightly acid solution gives a finer emulsion than that prepared in an alkaline solution, and any iron present remains dissolved. The Henty Gold Mine, located in Western Tasmania uses innovative solutions to effectively manage a mining operation in an environmentally sensitive setting and has been presented with several environmental awards. Fill is required as part of the mining method to provide passive ground support, minimise rock exposure and ensure maximum recovery of the small but high-grade orebody. The use of the whole portion of leach residue in the backfill reduces the surface tailing disposal requirements. Therefore, High Density Paste Fill (HDPF) has been selected as the most appropriate fill method to meet these objectives. Additional benefits include the minimisation of excess water from fill and the subsequent need for the collection and treatment of water and slimes. There are minimal equipment requirements during placement, thereby optimising mine resources for production. This paper covers the development of a suitable paste fill system to meet the specific needs of the Henty Gold Mine and the successful commissioning of this system for the first time in Australia.

Zircon is extensively used as moulding sand in the production of steel and high-duty iron castings. To achieve a satisfactory grade of zircon concentrate, the zircon particles may need ,to have surface coatings removed, as such coatings can hinder electrostatic and magnetic separation of zircon from associated minerals. Xn addition the presence of surface coatings on the zircon. particles can cause sinterins and fusion of the zircon to the east metal resulting in "burnt-on" sand or fritting of the casting. "Burnon" necessitates cleaning of the casting by grinding or chipping, which is expensive and results in loss of definition on the casting face.Hudson (1966) has pointed out ,that some coatings on mineral sands are lightly-adhering clays which can be removed quite readily by agitating the sands in water for a few minutes-thus their removal constitutesno problem. However, the heavy gingery coloured coating which adheres strongly to the surface of the particles in some deposits, and which has generally been considered to be a form of iron oxide (Baker, 1962; Hudson, 1966), cannot be removed effectively by attrition cleaning in water (Hudson, 1966). Such coatings limit the usefulness of these concentrates in the foundry industry.An investigation of strongly-adhering coatings on "ginger zircon" concentrates from the Yoganup deposit of Westralian Sands Ltd has shown that the stain consists of a cemented mixtvre of hydrated iron and aluminium oxides and kaolin minerals, and that it can be removed by a relatively low cost treatment.IDENTIFICATION OF THE STAIN BY XRDX-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns were obtained from small samples of stain scraped, individually, from the surface of hand-picked zircon and ilmenite crystals. These scrapings were mounted on quartz fibres and exposed to CoKa radiation in a 57 mm Debye camera. To avoid heavy fogging of the x-ray films, a substantial amount of the iron oxides was preferentially leached from the scrapings (before mounting) with an ammonium oxalate-oxalic acid solution (Rooksby, 1961). The Obuasi Mine in Ghana, West Africa is the largest producing gold mine in Africa, outside South Africa. The mine has changed from a mine producing from narrow vein, high grade quartz orebodies to a mine producing from wide, lower grade sulphide rebodies. Traditionally mining methods were cut and fill and sublevel caving. Now the preferred stoping methodologyis long hole open stoping. Transverse or longitudinal methods are both used, dependent on the orebody characteristics. The change has been technically, socially, economically and politicallychallenging and at times has tested the abilities of those responsible for the operation of the mine. However, the benefits have been many. Safety has improved significantly, ounces from underground have doubled. Productivityhas doubled and underground unit costs have reduced bya third. These achievements have allowed the Obuasi mine to staycompetiti ve in this time of falling gold price. During 1999 and 2000 a full review of the mining and processing operations was undertaken, and as a result, the mine is now in a phase of restructure. Efforts are being made across the mine to improve efficiencies and to reduce costs. The future for the Obuasi Mine is an exciting one.

Conceptually coal reserve assessment is simple but in practice it presents many problems. These arise from the origin and geological history of coal seams and from the diverse nature of the coal itself. The suitability of a coal for a particular use depends upon its type and so sheer quantity of reserves does not guarantee the adequacy of coal reserves for all requirements. Codes have been formulated to counteract the effects of subjectivity in reserve assessment. The code for calculating and reporting coal reserves published by the Standing Committee on Coalfield Geology of New South Wales has wide acceptance but the Committee itself recognises that it has shortcomings. Currently the Committee is engaged on the commendable but difficult endeavour of formulating a code that will meet the needs of scientific rigour and professional and commercial ethics and that will allow the specification of an assessment method without constraining it. It is generally agreed in the coal industry that the assessment of coal reserves can not conveniently be incorporated into codes formulated for other resources.

Data collected from payload management systems at a number of surface mining operations show significant variance. Heavily loaded trucks travel slower up ramps than lightly loaded trucks. Faster trucks are slowed by the presence of slower trucks, resulting in 'bunching' and production losses. A stochastic model was constructed to simulate a truck haulage return cycle of 12.5 km at a large open pit gold mine in the USA. For a fleet of 35 trucks, the best estimate of the benefit achieved by a sustained reduction in payload variance of 25 per cent is a throughput increase of 1.6 per cent, within a possible error range of 0.6 to 3.2 per cent. This potential benefit is worthy of further investigation by Continuous Improvement teams at large open pit mines. The model also indicates that, under the right circumstances, provision of an overtaking lane can provide throughput benefits of up to ten per cent, The feasibility of providing unidirectional haulage circuits within large open pit mines should be examined.

Geophysical signatures of the Taranaki and Tongariro volcanoes reflect similarities in their age, composition and hydrothermal histories, but also reflect differences in host rock settings and edifice evolution. The Taranaki volcanoes have strong positive gravity anomalies showing that their edifices largely consist of dense andesite which reflects substantial lava production or dyke injection during construction and that large sub-edifice dykelstock complexes occur. In contrast, the Tongariro volcanoes have strong negative gravity anomalies indicating low density edifices of volcaniclastic material; no sub-edifice intrusions can be identified, probably because of the lack of density contrast with host basement rocks. Strong positive magnetic anomalies over the younger cones can mainly be attributed to near-surface andesite lavas or dykes whereas subdued magnetic effects are associated with hydrothermally altered zones within both edifices and sub-edifice intrusions.

WITH the exception of the deposits of the Milburn Cement Co near Dunedin, Wilson's Portland Cement Co., on the Mahurangi River (a short distance north of Auckland), and those of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co., at Limestone Island, the cement. Tesources of New Zealand remain practically undeveloped. The Milburn Company utilizes a mixture of limestone and mud for the manufacture of cement, while Wilson's and the New Zealand Portland Cement companies both have the advantage of a natural cement stock which requires but small additions of highgrade limestone to give the mixture required. The plant and deposits of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co are located in Whangarei Harbour, some six miles from thetownship of Whangarei. The works and dwelling-houses are situated on Limestone Island, which, with an area of 92 acres, and rising to a height of 212 ft., supplies the bulk of the raw material required. In addition to the island, the company possesses a high-grade limestone area of, roughly, four acres, situated on the mainland, 11 miles to the south. This paper discusses the results of an Australian Coal Association Research Program project into the development of a routine analytical design method for roof support in underground mines. Simple design tools have been developed using a combination of elastic solutions, free body diagrams, and pile theory. An approach to the design of roof support in layered strata based on the ability of bolts to resist shear stresses is outlined. It is shown that pre-tensioning and angled installation are effective ways of increasing the effectiveness of bolts in such a situation. In highly stressed strata, macroscopic failure is predicted and a design based on the support of surcharged rock wedges is proposed. The methods are applicable to both coal and metalliferous mines.

This paper describes a technique to predict achievable head grades and likely variances from target grade for the Shovelanna Iron Ore Project, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The block model from which the production schedule is produced was created from a wide spaced drilling program and was classified as an Inferred Resource under the JORC Code. Ideally, production schedules and target grades would be determined using a combination of Proved and Probable reserves. However sometimes it is necessary to consider the requirements of potential off-take parties who have specific grade tolerances. A technique is needed to simulate mining sequences and grade variations early in the planning process, using an æexplorationÆ block model rather than the normal æminingÆ block model. Marketing contracts require examination whether the target grade {Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3 can be kept constant, or must be revised during the life of the mine. A model (written in ExcelÖ using Visual Basic macros) develops a feasible, close to optimal, mine plan from block model data. Cut-off grades for minable ore are chosen. The model evaluates ore tonnage, grade and stripping ratio against depth. Outputs at this stage include plots of slices through the orebody, at nominated x, y and z coordinates, showing ore grade, waste, drill hole locations and topography. The model then searches for a feasible satisfactory mine plan. The initial grade target is the average for the identified ore blocks. The available block list (ABL) at any time is the set of ore blocks, any one of which can be mined without removing any other ore block. The entire initial ABL has an unacceptably large ætotal grade stressÆ, defined as [(Grade-Target)/Tolerance]2, summed over the four relevant minerals {Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3}. The model trims the ABL, removing the block most harming the total stress. Trimming is repeated until the total grade stress reduces to an acceptable level. The trimmed ABL defines the first mine campaign. Removing the trimmed block set, a second ABL is exposed, which is again trimmed and mined. The process is automatic: a few seconds computation provides a complete mine plan. Re-running the model with adjusted grade limits quickly shows whether a uniform target can be achieved or whether the target must be modified during the mine life.

A 3D graphics modelling system has been applied to longhole stope ring design at Z.C. Mines, Broken Hill, NSW. This has been in operation for a four month period (January, 1988). The purpose of this application was to provide computer assistance to mine planning engineers and blasthole design draftsmen for the longhole design process, particularly by: 1. reducing the- volume of tracing, drafting and geometric manipulation which is a significant feature of the manual design process, 2. providing additional design drawings to enhance the conception and implementation of stoping design.

Acidic drainage has long been recognised as the largest environmental liability facing the mining industry, and to a lesser extent, the public, through abandoned mines. The Canadian Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) initiative was the first international multi-stakeholder program to develop scientifically based technologies to reduce the effect of acidic drainage. The original MEND Program extended over a nine-year time frame ending in 1997, with technology transfer activities continuing to the end of year 2000 under the MEND 2000 program. Both programs have contributed enormously to the understanding of acidic drainage and how to prevent it. MEND3, launched in 2001, intends to further this effort with a strong, research-driven program. The successes of the MEND initiative have come through the collaborative efforts of the partners, the sharing of experiences, the thorough evaluation of technologies and their incremental improvements. As a result, the knowledge base on acidic drainage has grown considerably. An international model of alliance between the various worldwide initiative involved in acidic drainage is being formalised at this conference. This global alliance will enhance technology transfer capabilities and will lead to improved environmental performance for the industry. It is through collaboration that we have achieved the most progress in environmental performance, and this formal relationship will further expand these benefits.

Qualitative measurement of respirable dust in metal mines is limited and an example of this is demonstrated at Northparkes Mine, where operational experience was sought for measuring dust standards and identifying exposure limits. However, relying on operational experience has limited value due to variation in observations from person to person and is based on visible dust (which is larger in size than respirable dust). However, with sophisticated dust measuring equipment, like the real-time aerosol monitor, dust concentrations can be accurately measured and recorded concisely. Research conducted as part of a collaborative agreement on behalf of Northparkes to launch an occupational dust monitoring program was implemented on the mine site. To form the basis of this research, it was hypothesised that no proper dust measuring testing at the mine site had been adequately identified. In addition, existing occupational hygiene monitoring programs did not adequately quantify employee exposures to these hazards. This project will outline the results of an occupational dust monitoring program, hence greatly improving the capacity to quantify the health risks posed to employees.

The design of water and ore addition points has an important bearing on the ease of operation of a grinding circuit. The nature of some of the design decisions and the possible options of the designer are discussed. For example, design decisions determine the ease of alteration and measurement of flowrate, the ease of maintenance, and the effectiveness of feed- back control loops which maintain material inputs (water and ore) at required values. To illustrate discussion in the paper, a grinding circuit which contains one rod mill and one ball mill in series is used. Practical ramifications of desigl decisions :;ne stressed.

Uranium minerals were found in Australia as early as 1869, but it was not until the 1940's that a search specifically for uranium was begun. Instrument types and techniques used in early exploration are still used today, but have been developed into more sophisticated and portable types. Recent improvements in exploration have been the introduction of the gamma ray spectrometer, radon sampling and geochemical surveys. The environments of presently defined uranium deposits are predominantly sedimentary. Known deposits in igneous environments are usually small. The size of targets which are likely to provide economic deposits is of the order of 10,000 tons U308, producible at a cost of less than $10 per pound. Such targets are most likely to be in Precambrian sediments or in granitic masses. Recent exploration in Australia has included investigation of Precambrian sediments, Precambrian and Palaeozoic granites, Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments, Precambrian volcanic rocks and brecciated masses of unknown age. The origin and method of emplacement of uranium in these environments is not well known but there are indications that syngenetic sedimentary processes are important, and volcanic rocks may make a major contribution to the supply of uranium.

The use of the underground space has an important role to play in solving such urban problems. But various issues must be taken into account when developing urban underground space.
