The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of milling and flotation circuit configuration on flotation performance of platinum-bearing ore from the UG2 reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. Pilot plant trials were conducted at Lonmin Platinum using a highly automated pilot plant (a floatability characterisation test rig or FCTR), with a pilot ball mill, a stirred media detritor and an ISA mill. Different milling and flotation configurations were tested, without changing the overall grind size distribution or flotation residence time from one circuit to the next. Results from the pilot plant tests indicate that staged grinding, with intermediate flotation stages, can achieve significant performance benefits in comparison to a single grind-float circuit, for an equivalent overall grind and flotation residence time. These findings are explored qualitatively, in terms of the recovery and transportation of fast, slow and non-floating platinum-bearing particles through the various milling and flotation stages, and an optimum strategy for the separation of this type of ore is explored and discussed.

BECAUSE of the attention given in recent years to the flotation process, there is an extensive range of equipment available to any staff detailed for: the design of a flotation mill. This statement applies not only to the flotation machines, but also to equipment for crushing and grinding, elevating the pulp, dehydrating of concentrates, and the methods of driving the various equipment.Distributed through the Proceedings and Transactions of various metallurgical societies and journals there are many excellent descriptions of flotation mills, their equipment and performance.Whilst these articles describe-in many cases in detail-the equipment in the mills to which they refer, the reasons which govern the choice of each particular equipment are not usually given.

As near surface deposits are increasingly mined out and pit widths beginto exceed the reach of practical direct-casting stripping machines, high haulage costs can make truck-shovel pre-stripping operations uneconomic. This is compounded because the rate of inflation for diesel fuel oil, lubricants, tyres, etc. exceeds the general rate of inflation. The use of conveyor transport systems, long established in terracemining operations in weak materials, e.g. engineering soils, can provide a viable haulage alternative in pre-strip operations and in some open pit settings. The paper describes the engineering requirements and basic economics of such systems.

Quaternary warping and uplift of antiformal schist ranges in Central Otago, New Zealand, has resulted in recycling of alluvial gold from widespread, generally weakly auriferous, Miocene fluvial gravels that unconformably overlie the schist, into aprons of fan sediments along the range margins. Basement erosion during uplift has been limited and so gold input from sparse gold-bearing quartz veins in the schist has been relatively minor. In an eluvial cycle on the slopes of the ranges, chemical remobilization of gold occurs during oxidation and erosion of the Miocene sediments. The typically fine-grained (300 - 400 ¦m) gold undergoes chemical modification and grain size enhancement of up to two orders of magnitude, and much of it is redeposited in a large number of relatively small alluvial fans along the range margins. Groundwater mobility within the fans results in minor additional gold mobility and grain size enhancement. During range uplift, a small number of relatively large axial streams and rivers have developed in structural lows between growing antiformal folds. Axial streams 'gather' their flow from consequent streams draining the folds, and flow parallel to a range axis for some distance before cutting across it in an antecedent gorge. The axial streams rework alluvial fan sediments along the range margins, and transport mainly fine-grained gold from the fans along the ranges. This gold is redeposited where the axial streams emerge from a range in the neighbouring structural basin. Axial streams drain relatively large areas of range surface, and thus reconcentrate significant quantities of gold in a small number of relatively large fans and fluvial deposits. The processes of gold collection and re-deposition by axial streams are essentially the same, regardless of stream size. Coarse-grained gold produced by chemical remobilization, is more difficult to transport in fluvial systems, and thus remains in close proximity to eluvial environment where it was formed.

The mineralogy of ten trihydrate bauxites and their leached residues from bomb digestion tests at 140, 180 and 2400C was investigated and the resultsòcorrelated with analytical data. It is shown that increased recovery of alumina at high temperatures is due to. the dehydroxylation of goethiteòrather than the presence of alumina monohydrates. The effects of aluminous goethite -on the interpretation of "available alumina". results-and normative analysis are discussed and it is concluded that,'cautionòmust be exercised in interpreting the results of bomb digestion tests in terms of alumina hvdrates.

The Pasminco mine at Rosebery in north western Tasmania is a medium sized underground base and precious metals mine. In April 1992 a major wedge failure of approximately 5000 t occurred in the backs of a main access drive to the 18 level H Lens orebody. This collapse prevented access to 190 000 t of ore which had been scheduled for production in July - August 1992. At the time of the collapse, the mine was in a transition period between mining small pillar remnants of several other orebodies and developing to the new deeper J Lens orebody.The development at this orebody was behind schedule and it was necessary to find a cost-effective and timely alternative to a 75 m bypass drive around the fall area.A Lysaght- Fletcher multiplate steel arch was available on-site from a deferred surface road project and it was decided to use this arch to regain access through the fall area. Due to the danger of continued minor falls, the entire 18 m long, 3.95 m high x 4.5 m wide tunnel had to be assembled in the 4.7 m wide x 5 m high accesss drive and pushed into the fall area as a single unit.

Solid Energy New Zealand (SENZ) uses a 20+ year period for integrated planning of all its business activities. It has an ongoing program of coal resource assessment to optimise future mines within this 20 year period, using a six step resource and mine planning process. Desktop review and conceptual study at preliminary Levels 1 and 2 are based on general coal resource information. Further coal resource investigations are carried out for the more detailed evaluations in secondary assessment, prefeasibility study, feasibility study and detailed engineering from Levels 3 to 6. At Levels 1 and 2, completing conceptual planning, including preliminary resource evaluation and economic appraisal to the target cost uncertainty level of ¦33 per cent, is challenging in New ZealandÆs highly variable geological and geographical conditions. Where coal deposit geometries are relatively simple, approximate methods for determining pit limits using overburden strip ratios, seam thickness, physical boundaries, and quality cut-offs may be sufficient. Many New Zealand coalfields are however complicated structurally, with multiple seams and extensive folding and faulting. Coal seams are characterised by variable dip, thickness, and quality over relatively short distances. In the North IslandÆs Waikato coalfields, coal is typically overlain by weak sediments and clay rich strata that necessitate very flat cut and fill slope angles. The proximity of these deposits to major infrastructure (including towns, highways and rail lines), significant environmental features such as the Waikato river and lakes, and valuable dairy farmland, add further complexity. Traditional preliminary mine planning techniques applied in these conditions are insufficient. Pit optimisation software, widely used in the metalliferous mining industry since the 1980s, offers the ability to analyse many more specific factors affecting pit limits, mine layouts, and economics, with more rigour and for a much larger number of scenarios, than traditional methods allow. SENZ therefore decided to adapt and use æWhittleÆ pit optimisation software for Level 2 analysis of several Waikato opencast prospects. This paper describes this work.

THE writer of this paper well realizes that the majority of engineering and metallurgieal works have from time to time evolved mechanical devices which are of great value as regards application in an operating plant.Many of these deviees would not be apparent to an individual making a brief inspection of works such as these, and it is for this reason that the writer proposes to outline a few of the devices which have been evolved by the engineering department of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd.NOVEL METHOD OF MACHINING A SPHERICAL JOINTFig. 1 represents one half of a casing for a ball-joint coupling. In the ordinary methods of boring an external spherical casing, that is with a radius bar attached to the tool rest of a lathe, there is always an error in the bore. It has two flat sides, and this error is inherent in the ordinary orthodox method and cannot be corrected. The engineers of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. undertook a job that had to be extremely accurate, and the tool shown in Fig. 2 was evolved. The proponents of new mining projects always run the risk that their project is deemed to be not in the public interest. Nothing to be done here except to try and pick it earlyùit is, after all, the approvals process that is supposed to screen such projects out. But there is a second risk, about which much can be done: that inadequate or untimely information confuses the formal assessment of a project and the political context within which the decision is ultimately made. This is environmental impact assessment (EIA) process risk and it has become steadily greater in a changing world, where: miners have lost clout; public trust in institutions has declined; governments follow, as authority pyramids give way to spheres of influence; NGOs are asking the questions people want answered; and stakeholders have become the reference point. This new world deals harshly with yesterdayÆs methods. But it needs to be understood if principles and methods for managing EIA Process Risk are to be advanced.

An investigation into different aspects of importance in the understanding of explosibility of hybrid mixtures of coal dust, air and gases potentially found within mine workings through a comprehensive laboratory program of explosibility tests was conducted. Plotting of test results revealed that conditions of potential explosibility could be described using two dimensional flammability limit surfaces- for coal dust/oxygen; methane/oxygen; and coal dust/methane mixtures. From these plots, the three dimensional flammability envelopes defining the explosibility of the coal dust/methane/oxygen mixtures can be defined and illustrated for a coal sample. The surfaces of the three dimensional envelope describe limits which separate inert mixtures of coal dust and methane at varying oxygen levels from those concentrations which are ignitable under defined conditions. It is considered appropriate to generalise that the geometric shapes of these limit regions are applicable to all type classifications of coal dust. There are practical applications of these results to the underground environment.The action of free radical initiators in the propagation of a methane gas explosion was examined for its applicability to the flammability of coal dust/gas/air mixtures. The oxides of nitrogen or NO x radicals have influence upon the lean limits of flammability of hybrid mixtures and this is illustrated by use of three dimensional coordinate geometry. Gases can be introduced to the underground environment through the exhaust gases of diesel equipment. It is concluded that radical species can substantially increase the flammability of gas and dust flames and as a consequence raise risk of mine atmosphere explosibility.

THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June, 1,,896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to -the works, the firewood being of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides).The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall. The areas so far exploited aggregate a total of about 42 sq. 'miles, and this denuded country gives promise of ultimately becoming very valuable pastoral ground for cattle-raising. The tonnage of wood yielded per acre varies from 40 to 100 tons on stack measurement of 80 cub. ft. per ton, 60 tons per acre being considered a good average yield. The gross amount of firewood handled during the past 13 years approximates 1,200,000 tons, the greater portion of which has been obtained by ordinary tramming methods. The Hall-Heroult process is likely to be the dominant method of aluminium production for the remainder of the century. The characteristics of the operation of a modern smelter are described and attention drawn to their disabilities which are due chiefly to the small production capacity of individual cells.The principal components of the Hall-Heroult cell- the electrolyte, the anode and the cathodes are discussed in order to identify the problems of scale-up. The factors influencing current efficiency and energy consumption are analysed and lead to the conclusion that the greatest potential for energy saving lies in reducing the anode to cathode distance (ACD).The most promising direction for major change is in the application of a new titanium diboride-carbon composite for coating of the surface of the cathode carbon. It improves the wetting of the carbon by aluminium and should permit the use of sloping cathodes and anodes. The deep metal pad would thereby be eliminated and, in the absence of magnetic perturbations, the ACD could be substantially decreased.

This paper examines the new water-hydraulic (hydro powered) drill rigs that have been developed and proven in the last decade primarily in tabular, shallow-dipping, narrow-reef, hard-rock South African mines. These include - drill rigs for flat end tunnel development, narrow inclined raises and winzes, large inclines and declines and long hole based developments such as orepasses and vent raises. The hydropower technology rigs offer advantages both in safety and performance over traditional compressed air powered, hand-held development are generally more cost effective than imported oil electro-hydraulic drill rigs. Furthermore, hydro powered rigs are inherently energy efficient. The benefits of hydropower are discussed and a æcomprehensive development modelÆ is presented which demonstrates that orebodies can be accessed in significantly shorter times. æLocalisedÆ half level hydropower systems are introduced and a range of ancillary equipment available is listed.CITATION:Fraser, P D, 2012. China has abundant bauxite resources, but these resources are mostly of a diaspore, which has a feature of low Al2O3 to SiO2 mass ratio, typically ranging from four to six. Compared to other materials, this kind of raw materials consumes more alkaline and energy in the process of metallurgy, and incurred a high alumina production cost. To solve this problem, researchers in China have done a lot of work on removing of the silicon from bauxite. Under the impetus of these works, in 2003, the first flotation plant of diasporic bauxite in the world was constructed in Zhongzhou, Henan, China. Seven years of operating experience shows that this technology can signifi cantly reduce the costs of following-metallurgy processing. These efforts are an important reference for the processing of similar resource. In general, for Western scholars it is diffi cult to fully understand these works because most of them are published in Chinese. In this paper, a detail introduction for the research progress on China bauxite de-silica flotation was presented, these works involved crystal chemistry, wettability of bauxite minerals, collector and modifi er in bauxite fl otation and flotation practice, etc.

In the geologically prospective nations which rim the Pacific Ocean, mineral deposits offer great potential to create wealth for social and economic development. The paper first examines the geological and economic attributes of potential mineral wealth based on current outlook assessment of all significant base metal deposits discovered to 1988 in two Pacific Rim nations - Australia and Canada. The variability of mineral wealth among the economic deposits evaluated and the major contribution of the few world-class discoveries to total mineral wealth are highlighted. Then, the essential but too often neglected linkage between the makeup of potential wealth and its actual realization is analyzed. The impact of taxation and the role of exploration are crucial in this regard. Finally, the ingredients of exploration success, prerequisites for realizing the mineral wealth of nations, are examined.

Feasibility studies form a vital and significant component of the project delivery cycle. They are at the heart of the valuation process. This paper focuses on variables which can affect a project and how these are assessed as part of the decision-making process through feasibility studies. Test work and site selection needs; the degree of engineering required to meet the study requirements and the quality of owner project information are discussed. Also, local factors including permitting needs, social, environmental and government relations are considered. Engineering and site factors are crucial in the estimating process. The interaction of detailed engineering, engineering assumptions and estimating methodologies are therefore examined. The ownerÆs perspective is considered along with risk analysis, which is fundamental in project feasibility study activities. The impact of this is also discussed.

Recent studies by the authors have concerned themselves with assessing the earthquake risk to north-eastern Australia, based on available historical earthquake data for the area. There have been several significant earthquakes (Richter local magnitudes of the order of 6) concentrated in the Wide Bay - Burnett region in central eastern Queensland, although none of these has occurred close to a significant centre of population or development. Using derived average acceleration attenuation relations and world-wide data on earthquake-induced damage as a basis, conditions under which earthquake-induced liquefaction may occur have been investigated and presented in graphical form. Historical earthquake data for north-eastern Australia have been overlain on this graphical presentation and it has been demonstrated that the Wide Bay - Burnett region, in particular, may in the past have been on the verge of earthquake-induced liquefaction, where ground conditions are susceptible. When this is viewed in the context of the rapid growth in population and development in this area over recent years, the risk can no longer be ignored with impunity.
