The estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from coalmines is increasingly becoming a priority for both operators and regulators. At the same time, involved scientific challenges in the methane measurements is generating significant interest from global research community. Various technology providers are also actively engaged in improving their sensors and platforms to address the measurement challenges and capitalise the market opportunities. This presentation highlights rapidly evolving multifaceted landscape of coalmine greenhouse gas emissions. It covers the advances in sensors for the detections, including ground-based, airborne, and satellite-based systems as well as models for the emission estimations, including attempts to reduce the involved uncertainties.

The issue of flyrock is critical to the operation of all mineral extraction sites that use blasting. This paper takes a risk-based approach to identifying, analysing and managing the flyrock hazard. The basic cause of flyrock generation is a mismatch between the energy available and the work to be done. It should be noted that the energy available depends on the charge confinement. This mismatch can be caused by an abrupt decrease in rock resistance (geological weaknesses), overcharging, inadequate delays between holes and rows, inappropriate blast design and inaccurate drilling. The mismatch can come about from two sides; either too much energy (charge) for a fixed burden (work to be done), or insufficient burden (work to be done) for a fixed charge. The main mechanisms of flyrock generation are rifling, cratering, face bursting and secondary blasting. Each source mechanism has different characteristics in terms of vulnerable locations and each requires different control measures. However, all controls require a high level of quality control and assurance. A range of different approaches for managing flyrock risk and determining blast clearance zone dimensions are presented. A prescriptive consequence-based approach is discussed. A conventional risk matrix based approach is outlined with some innovation regarding controls rating and uncertainty ratings. A published semi-empirical approach is discussed. Two examples of quantitative flyrock risk analysis are presented; one involves bench blasting based on a published paper and the second is a cratering example developed by the author based on consulting projects. Finally, a stochastic approach based on published work is presented which simulates cratering superimposed on face bursting mechanisms. Also, a stochastic analysis undertaken by the author of the cratering example is presented. Effective blast emission management is required for two reasons; firstly to reduce and/or eliminate safety risks and secondly to manage public perception of blasting risks such as flyrock. The conclusion of the current research is that the wild flyrock risk can be estimated using existing techniques. Furthermore, both qualitative and quantitative risk management methods as discussed in this paper can be used for flyrock management for a given blasting situation. A combination of both is considered to be best practice.

The development of the Yallourn East Field brown coal open cut has involved the adoption of novel investigational programs into coal qual- ity. For example, weighted average coal property statistics for key proper- ties are determined by using a unique blend of traditional and 3-dimensional geostatistical estimation. Predicted property values are made freely available from the mainframe computer in the form of kriged esti- mates of 60 000 tonne coal blocks. Geostatistical predictions are being incorporated within the Mincom/Intergraph CADD system which is used for mine design. Key properties relating to coal type, moisture, and ash have been evalu- ated to provide the required data for the design and operation of both the open cut and the power stations as well as the briquette plant.

This paper reviews the various processes successfully in operation to treat refractory gold ores and describes in detail the alkaline pressure oxidation circuit operating at the Barrick Mercur Mine, Utah, U.S.A., on car- bonaceous/sulphide refractory ore and the acidic pressure oxidation circuit operating at the Barrick Goldstrike Mine, near Carlin, Nevada, U.S.A., on sulphide refractory ore. The autoclave process is important to Barrick for the extraction of gold. The Company has operated successfully a 750 ton per day unit at its Mercur property for the past two years and more recently has commissioned a 1500 ton per day unit at Goldstrike. The paper presents data relative to operating costs, materials of construc- tion for autoclaves and peripheral equipment, reagent requirements, and changes required during commissioning for both autoclave systems.

The results presented here show quite definitely that in the system investigated the intensity of dispersion is enhanced by switching the flow entry from bottom to sides of the packed trough. Since there is no reason to suppose that this would not be true generally then it is not surprising that the blast furnace dispersion data of Standish and Polthier lie above the data for packed columns with bottom fluid entry. In fact, on the basis of the present results, blast furnace dispersion results can never equal standard packed column behaviour but must always be above these. The result that the intensity of dispersion in the trough model is higher closer to the side ports than away from them is at variance with that of Standish and Polthier blast furnace results. Aside from the obvious structural differences between these two systems, it is thought that the presence of raceways and the tortuous path of the gas flow in the furnace may provide an answer. Clearly this is an important difference in the behaviour of the two systems and further investigations designed to clarify the position would have significant practical value. This would also give an indication of how the furnace D/ud values may be decreased along the whole height - assuming of course that this result gives the best overall performance of the furnace. However, there is to date no knowledge whatsoever about this aspect of blast furnace Technology.

Reduction of waste oxides from steel plant operations was investigated in a laboratory tube furnace at different temperatures and furnace atmospheres. The results have shown that the waste oxide pellets are reduced rapidly to very high degrees of metallization irrespective of the furnace atmosphere and that the reduction is simultaneously accompanied by significant low- ering of the original impurities. It is shown, for example, that treatment at 1000¦C for 30 min. can reduce the Zn content from 0.98% to 0.0065% and K and Na contents from 0.19% and 0.76% respectively, to less than 0.01%. However, pellet strength at 1000¦C was low but this, as shown in the paper, can be very significantly improved by treatment at 1250¦C. The results indicate that the reduction of the waste oxide pellets of this investigation proceeds almost certainly by a chain reaction mechanism and that this principle could be advantageously extended to the reduction of iron ores and other oxides in general.

Simple quotation of quantities of coal reserves neglects the relationship between qualities of coals and their efficient use. If exploitation of a deposit is contemplated, its life expectancy can be deduced only if its reserves are estimated according to the coal user's technological standards. A wide range in properties will satisfy a steaming coal, whereas a high vitrinite high rank coal would be preferred for coking and a low inertinite low rank coal for conversion. In competitive trading the buyer's commercial specification may require weighing against the producer's practical ideals, especially when beneficiation is critical. Differentiation of grades in quality of a deposit provides an intelligent understanding of the economic importance of the deposit. The Wongawilli seam of the New South Wales Southern Coalfield exemplifies the effect of quality criteria upon the extent of in situ, recoverable and marketable classes of economic reserves. Effective management of a deposit will result from simultaneous quotation of coal qualities and quantities in a statement of its reserves.

Century is a shale hosted zinc, lead, silver deposit developed within gently folded, Proterozoic Lawn Hill Formation shales and siltstones, approximately 250 kilometres north-northwest of Mount Isa, comprising 118 million tonnes of stratiform mineralisation, averaging 10.2 per cent ,,inc, 1.5 per cent lead and 36 grams per tonne silver. The deposit is largely overlain by Cambrian limestone and younger Proterozoic sedimentary rocks, outcropping at only two places. Small discordant lode lead-silver deposits formed the basis of relatively small scale mining activity in the area for almost 100 years, exploration tenement covering the deposit being granted to CRAE exactly 100 years after the first mining leases were pegged in the area in 1887.Stratiform mineralisation occurs within three distinct blocks, bounded by normal faults and the unconformity between Lawn Hill Formation and overlying Cambrian limestones. The Termite Range Fault, a major northwest trending, regional scale fault system occurs adjacent to the northeast deposit boundary, while the Magazine Hill Fault, possibly a component of the east trending Little Range Fault system, forms the southern boundary of the deposit.

The Angas Zinc Mine (Angas) is a poly-metallic, underground mine in the Adelaide Hills that has been developed through arguably one of the most volatile financial time periods in living memory. From boom times during the commencement of the project, the global financial crisis (GFC) through the stabilisation of the operating period and then a subdued capital market for the period where mine life extension was targeted, the financial environment has always presented a different set of challenges. Indeed even the Underground Operators’ Conferences that have been held across the span of the project allude to these changes: ‘Boom and Beyond’, Launceston (2008); ‘Safe, Innovative and Sustainable’, Canberra (2011) and ‘Managing the Margin’ in Adelaide (2014).Angas gives a rare opportunity to see the entire life-of-mine of a project and its economic performance within a relatively short time frame. Angas, owned and operated by Terramin Australia Ltd (Terramin), will have undergone resource estimation drill out, feasibility study, permitting, commissioning, operating and completion and rehabilitation all within a period of approximately ten years. A number of sensitivities of the project were tested, particularly in the bankable feasibility study (BFS) stage and the aim of this paper is to identify the factors that impacted the operations profitability the most, whether they were identified preproduction or not. The key sensitivities assessed in the BFS were typical of similar studies, including operating costs, metal recoveries, capital costs, zinc prices, lead prices and exchange rates. The manner in which these sensitivities presented themselves in real life were not as anticipated and modelled in the feasibility study and were also heavily impacted by technical challenges.CITATION:Harris, A, Laughton, K and Ranford, J, 2014. The 1100 orebody is a massive copper sul- phide orebody which contains a major portion of the Isa Mine copper ore reserves of 130 million tonnes at 3.2%. The underground mining of a deposit as large as the 1100 orebody is technologically a complex operation as extraction strategies have to be evaluated with reference to 1. rock mechanics considerations, 2. safety and environmental standards, 3. production and operating require- ments and 4. metal recovery and costs. The mining philosophy in the orebody has undergone considerable change over the past five years as a result of experience and improved technology. At this stage, primary stopes are extracted by high rise sublevel open stoping and pillars by slot and mass blast drawn either under rock fill or as an open Stope.

Opencast blasting is notoriously subject to variable blasting conditions, some of which are related to changes in ground conditions and some to human and equipment factors. As drilling and blasting constitute a high proportion of working costs, control in this area is crucial for good management. During a recent exercise, wireline logging of blastholes was shown to have the potential to provide invaluable data for optimising blasting control and design. The paper reports on the exercise undertaken, showing that serious misconceptions as to the borehole diameters, explosive densities and posi- tions of decking were quickly corrected using the method. Potential use in blast design is discussed, as are the cost implications.

All systems can be divided into a series of subprocesses. Conventional management and design practices focus on the optimisation of these system components. However, the interaction between subprocesses means that improvements made to the individual components do not necessarily translate into total system performance improvement.TSG Consulting advocates a ætotal integrated system approachÆ to understanding the behaviour and performance of complex interacting systems. In a constraint-based integrated set of processes, the instantaneous system capacity is limited by the subsystem component capacity that is the bottleneck at that point in time. Additionally, real world stochastic and dynamic influences tend to have knock-on effects across subsystem boundaries. This necessitates the requirement for simulation modelling to develop and validate solutions that are sufficiently robust to deliver sustainable outcomes. The key to maximising production is to understand the causes and effects the inherent variability has on component performance, subprocess performance and most importantly, the total integrated system performance. The correct use of simulation modelling techniques allows study teams to evaluate the relative merits of different capacity enhancement proposals. Put simply, when done well, simulation modelling provides a quantitative and rational process to enhance the knowledge and insight needed to make informed decisions.

Several styles of copper (Cu) mineralisation are present at Sepon. Large tonnage, low grade skarn and carbonate replacement massive sulfide mineralisation occur within the metamorphic aureole of Permian-aged rhyodacite porphyry intrusions (RDPs). During exhumation and supergene weathering, this primary mineralisation has been upgraded to form high-grade chalcocite enriched zones up to 50 m thick, which comprises the bulk of Cu resources currently being mined at Sepon. Groundwaters remobilise Cu to form exotic accumulations of malachite that are locally hosted in irregular karsts in carbonate rocks, found up to 1000 m from source mineralisation. Khanong is the largest Cu deposit and recent discoveries have been made at Thengkham South, Thengkham North and Phabing. All deposits have formed by similar processes of mineralisation. However, all differ due to local variations in host rock lithology, structural setting, and hydrological conditions. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. With the aim of producing a concentrate with silica content lower than 1.0 per cent SiO2, laboratory experiments were conducted using a sample of the final concentrate from the Samarco iron ore flotation plant (mechanical cells circuit). The sample contained 3.08 per cent SiO2. This sample was split in two size ranges: >105 ¦m and 2. The >105 ¦m fraction, representing 23.3 per cent of the initial mass, was re-ground to 100 per cent 2 content were obtained. Considering the mass proportions of the two size fractions, the calculated silica content of the combined concentrate was 0.68 per cent, which is considered satisfactory for the objective of this investigation. The major reasons for the higher (0.90 per cent) silica content of the concentrate from the coarse fraction are the presence of silicon in the lattice of goethite and the presence of residual silicious slimes in the pores of porous hematite.

Asian countries are now facing very crucial aspects of urban living under the recession of the economy. The current situation is such that those hard aspects may make the living standards worse and worse in the next century, unless proper measures are taken on the infrastructure for urban lives. More than half of the population in Asian countries are now living in cities. Nowadays, the socio-economic development of the Asian countries has been closely linked to the development of world economy because of the border-less economy system. The population inflow to big cities is inevitable as the Asian countries step into an industrialised economy. Such a tendency will be further accelerated when Asia becomes a centre of financial business in the 21st century. The government of any country has realised the situation very well. The United Nations has established a specific agency to solve the problems caused by the rapid urbanisation. This global agency for urbanisation is named United Nations Center for Human Settlement and it is so called Habitat. There are three Habitat offices in the world, Nairobi in Kenya, Santiago in Chile and Fukuoka in Japan. The activities of Habitat offices cover a wide field of issues such as housing, urban development, infrastructure and environment, etc. Habitat Fukuoka Office is serving Asia and Pacific in co-operation with the government offices concerned.

The Bowen Basin of Queensland and the Hunter Valley of New South Wales are the two largest black coal producing areas in Australia. Mining activities require the availability of large on-lease storages for water and tailings. The legislative framework for the regulation of large dams is slightly different between the states. The paper provides a broad outline of the regulatory framework in each state, with particular reference to Queensland and New South Wales. In New South Wales, water storages and tailings dams are treated similarly by the regulator. Under the Queensland Water Act 2000, now proclaimed, referable dams are restricted to water supply dams the failure of which involves population at risk downstream. Tailings dams are excluded, being deemed hazardous waste dams regulated under the Environment Protection Act 1994. These storage facilities are required to include a ædesign storage allowanceÆ so that the possibility of spillway discharges is minimised. New South Wales is moving toward this requirement. A curious anomaly is emerging in Queensland: the legislative definition of hazardous waste û material resulting from the processing of minerals û does not extend to coal tailings since coal is not included in the definition of a mineral. The paper explores this and other ramifications for mining operations of the new legislation as well as general trends in criteria affecting the cost of providing water and tailings storages.

The `environment' has certainly been a growth area over the past three decades with growing awareness in the 1960s, some large battles and the of significant legislation in the 1970s. The most important period however has been the 1980s and so far the 1990s where, in addition to the of some more rigorous legislation, we have seen the practical application of environmental management/rehabilitation Techniques.

Reservoir Engineering has developed into an art. One phase of this art is forecasting the futi. perf ormance of oil and gas reservoirs for property valuations. A discussion of the necessity for oil property valuation isgiven. A brief 'discussion of the four most common methods is included and the engineering method is explained in more detail. As an example of oil property valuations, a producing oil lease in Shackelford County, Texas, USA is evaluated.' The recommendations and conclusions arrived at frun the results obtained are presented.

Cores of pre-Tertiary basement from ten oil exploration wells are related petrologically to the "axial", "marginal" and "shelf" facies of the New Zealand Geosyncline.A NW. Nelson-type basement is inferred beneath peninsular Taranaki and the western continental shelf. The terms Taranaki Basin and Wanganui Basin are re-defined and the terms North Wanganui Basin, South Wanganui Basin, Pipiriki High, Taranaki Fault, and Turakina Fault are proposed. Major faults are interpreted as of mainly transcurrent type and appear to form the western part of a splay at the northern end of the Alpine Fault. Evidence for a major Cook Strait Fault is reviewed.

Cannington mine is a silver lead zinc operation located in north west Queensland. The operation has been in production since 1997. Ore is primarily moved through an underground material handling system comprising of a crusher, conveyor and hoist. The underground crusher and conveyor system were sited in lower grade ore when the mine was first commissioned. As Cannington is now a mature operation, this ore is considered run of mine and stoping progressed into the crusher exclusion zone. As the stoping fronts advanced there was increased damage on the crusher chamber and infrastructure. In response to monitoring data, the crusher monitoring system was significantly upgraded in 2016. The monitoring system included rock mass and infrastructure instrumentation. It improved the understanding of stress impacts and mechanisms driving the damage within the chamber. It allowed the site geotechnical team to respond to changes utilising ground support, mining sequences and increased levels of monitoring. As stoping and damage to the rock mass continued, so did the process of responding to monitoring data. Ultimately, the monitoring system enabled a safe and controlled closure of the chamber.
