The Writer's knowledge of this region began in 1912, while he was with the Geological Survey of South Australia, and, investigated the principles governing the occurrence of fresh and saline ground waters in the area then being opened for closer settlement by the railways under construction from Port Lincoln.These field investigatons for water were extensive rather than intensive, but other examinations covered certain mineral aspects. The Writer also has' had the benefit in the preparation of this paper, of later work done by others, as well as of the monumental earlier work in South Australia by the late H. Y. L. Brown.AREAThe area dealt with, approximately 21,000 square miles, lies to the south of the latitude of Port Augusta.TOPOGRAPHYAs a whole the region is one of low relief, but the Olinthus Range, west of Cowell and north of Cleve, reaches an elevation of 2,000ft., while there is als0 a high area west of Port Lincoln and Tumby Bay. At the north end of the region the Gawler Ranges are formed by the dissection of a thick sheet of felspar porphyry extending over two degrees of longitude, by a width of 20 to 70 miles, with fairly uniform maximum elevations of the undissected portions of the order of 1,000 ft. above sea level. The Tregoora Gold Project is centred around the old Mitchell River Antimony Field located 100 kilometres west-northwest of Cairns, North Queensland. The project is currently the subject of a joint venture between Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. and Hawk Investments Limited.Historical BackgroundThe Tregoora area was first prospected for antimony and gold around 1890. During the periods 1905 to 1914 and 1937 and 1944 approximately 100 tonnes of antimony and an unknown quantity of gold were won from a number of small mines the principal one being the "Retina". A strong increase in the demand for antimony in the early 1970's resulted in renewed exploration activity in the region and the re-development of the Retina Mine. Despite the intermittent interest in the region for antimony it was not until 1984 that the potential of the area for hosting gold resources was realised with the delineation by Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. of a significant gold deposit now referred to as the Black Knight.

When a major mineral find has been announced the general perception is that a battle between Aborigines and the mining company involved will inevitably occur.It is a fact that many miners in the past have not had a good relationship with Aborigines because of their indifferent attitudes towards them. They saw no common future and went their particular way. However, attitudes have changed significantly since Noonkanbah and both miners and Aborigines are seeking common ground in order to achieve mutual benefits from the establishment of a mine on or near Aboriginal land. There are many obstacles that both miners and Aborigines need to overcome inordertofindthiscommongroundtoachieveawin/win situation. The obstacles can be found in entrenched ideas and practices which need overhauling, not the least of which emanate from government policy and requirements.Without going into specifics, the Noonkanbah incident during the 1970's where Aborigines and their supporters confronted miners who were ordered by the Western Australian governmentto drill on Aboriginal land, polarized Aborigines and miners. Since this incident, many Aborigines, particularly those in the cities, have had the attitude that mining and Aboriginal culture are in direct conflict. Aboriginal opinion is generally shaped in the larger cities through mass media coverage of the opinions of urban Aborigines and their supporters. Through no fault of their own, these Aborigines were removedfromthe land of their ancestors and have notlived atraditional Aboriginal life-style for a number of generations and most have little knowledge of, nor have had involvement in, traditional Aboriginal lore and culture. For the most part these people live in awestern life-style and few still know their language. They generally have high profiles, often giving viewpoints that are wrongly considered "Aboriginal" and supposedly representing all Aborigines. This group is very different with their thought processes and values from those Aborigines who live on their own traditional lands with a traditional life-style, and practise their age old ceremonies. Their tribal values are based in their relationship with the land, expressed through complex religious ceremonial rites of song, dance and legend. Today this group is very much diminished in numbers but nevertheless in the region of the Gulf of Carpentaria there is a high proportion ofpeople who practise their lore, speak their own languages and pass on traditions to their children. It is well documented in the history of Australia that Aborigines have been decimated in numbers and whole tribes have been wiped out. Certainly in this region the experience has been no different.

A key premise to this paper is that most people involved in the design and implementation of drilling and blasting operations could benefit from a greater understanding of the geological materials, deposits and landforms they are dealing with. The second key ingredient for successful blasting is the concept of blasting objective. Mine operators and blasting contractors must be clear on what drives their costs (blasting leverage) and should formulate blasting objectives and operational targets which help in this regard. Many operators ignore geology descriptors and features apart from the name of the rock and start crudely quantifying the rock mass properties in terms of uniaxial compressive strength, or even worse still as hard or soft. This occurs too early in the design process and not much attention is paid to the geological materials, geological structures and the characteristics of the deposit they intend to excavate. In effect the rock type name and the strength descriptor become the site geology. Furthermore many blasting operators do not formalise their blasting objective, do not set operational targets and do not measure results to the degree required for continuous improvement. In this paper a number of civil, surface mine and underground mine blasting applications are tabulated in terms of typical blasting objectives and common geological materials. A good description of geological materials can convey a lot of useful information for blasting operators if they are able to accommodate this knowledge. In addition a clear statement of the blasting objective and associated operational targets will maximise the likelihood of achieving blast-driven downstream productivity improvements. Gravity Leaching of high-grade gravity gold concentrates, such as Knelson Concentrates, with the ACACIA Reactor represents a new generation of concentrate treatment methods. The ACACIA Reactor is a complete packaged plant for the maximising of gold recoveries from gravity gold concentrates. This paper will introduce the process technology and provide process results from the Porgera ACACIA Reactor installation. The advantages of the ACACIA Reactor are many, and justification for installation has been varied. The typical advantages of the process include: increased recovery of gold from the Knelson Concentrate; no return of high-grade table tails, often grading several thousand g/t, into the mill circuit; reduction in tails grades of slow leaching gold; reduction in the requirement for operating staff by the removal of the manual tabling process and replacing with a fully automated treatment system; improved security by removing the tabling step where operating staff come into direct contact with visible gold; improved health and safety, by the removal of the treatment steps for the table concentrate, which often include operators handling corrosive chemicals and the production of sulphur and arsenic compound fumes; and improved metallurgical accounting, by allowing daily head grade calculations. The ACACIA Reactor was developed by Anglogold for Union ReefÆs Gold Plant and has been in production for over two years, and has proven to be a low cost, high recovery, mechanically reliable method for the processing of gold concentrates. Such has been the success of the plant, there are now four full installations of the processing plant, including Anglogold Union ReefÆs, Anglogold Sunrise Dam, PACMIN Carosue Dam and Porgera Joint Venture.

Primary production blasting at Hamers- ley Iron began with seven inch holes at Tom Price in 1966 and has developed since then to large multiple row shots of 381 mm holes at Tom Price and 311 mm at Paraburdoo. Up to 1.3 million tonnes are initiated in a single blast with the average around 300,000 tonnes. Development can be traced through Anfo, AlAnfo, slurries, various boosters, initiation and delay techniques, hole loading and daily operating practices. A standard practice could be developed for the two mines for normal pro- duction blasts; this would not apply to such common variations as low "paddy" shots, pre- splitting, tight corners necessitating single row drilling etc. Because of ground variation three or even four sizes of drill holes may well be economic- al for blasting, even though this would be off set by complications in operation, supervision, store stocking and maintenance, particularly in Drilling.

Forty two new apatite and zircon fission track analyses on the Kubor-Marum-Bena Bena area of northern Papua New Guinea severely constrain the timing of tectonic events and hence the tectonic models for New Guinea, particularly arc-continent collision. In addition, the data can be analysed regionally in terms of known and assumed lithospheric fault zones inferred to control mineralisation (eg. Corbett 1994; Kendrick et al 1995; Hill et al 1996) to determine reactivation of these zones. When combined with the new kinematic plate models for the evolution of New Guinea (Hall 1997) there is the potential to predict likely zones of mineralisation. The low-medium grade? Palaeozoic rocks of the Bena Bena terrane yielded a zircon fission track age of 17 Ma, indicating the time of cooling below 200¦C. The age is consistent with `the shift, at about 16-18 Ma, from volcanolithic sediments to mixed provenance sediments rich in quartz and metasedimentary lithic fragments in the southern Finisterre Ranges (Abbott et al. 1994). This shift was recorded in the Sukurum Formation, which ranges in age from Middle Miocene to Pliocene with quartzose and metasedimentary grains in all samples. Although recording rocks at temperatures of 200¦C and hence depths of ---5km, the 17 Ma age suggests the Bena Dena terrane was rapidly cooling at that time due to uplift and erosion, supplying metasediments to the southern flank of the Finisterre Range, currently 100 km to the east. Significantly, the Middle Miocene Akuna Intrusive Complex, dated 14-17 Ma by Page (1976), lies almost entirely within or adjacent to the Bena Bena terrane. Potentially the uplift, erosion and cooling of the terrane at 17 Ma may have been caused by the rising plutons. If so the 800 sq km exposure Akuna Intrusive Complex at the SE end of the Bena Bena terrane may have been the focus of uplift and supplied the metasedimentary detritus to the Finisterre Range. This suggests that the Finisterre Range was not far removed from the Bena Bena terrane, perhaps less than the 200 - 400 km indicated by Abbott et al (1984). The Akuna Intrusive Complex probably resulted from subduction of the Solomon Sea Plate beneath the PNG margin. In order for the subducted slab to reach depths of -100km below the area to facilitate partial melting and plutonism (Hamilton 1994), subduction probably commenced 3-5 Ma Ma before plutonism, ie at or prior to 20 Ma suggesting a significant change in the tectonic regime at -20 Ma, perhaps related to collision of the Solomons - Ontong Java Plateau collision (eg. Hall 1997). The main result to emerge from the 28 apatite fission track analyses is that the whole of the study area underwent rapid cooling due to uplift and denudation in the Late Miocene, mainly between 7-10 Ma. Results from several samples indicate that they were not totally overprinted prior to uplift indicating maximum burial of -3 km in the Middle Miocene, assuming normal temperature gradients. The burial is less if higher gradients are assumed, allowing for Middle Miocene plutonism. The Late Miocene cooling in the Mobile Belt agrees well with the Pliocene to Recent cooling in the Fold Belt to the SW, interpreted to be due to uplift and erosion associated with fold and thrust deformation of the Miocene Limestones (Hill & Gleadow 1989). This timing relationship suggests, that compressional deformation in the Mobile Belt occurred in the Late Miocene, at 105 Ma, and that the deformation migrated towards the undeformed foreland in the southwest in the Pliocene, at 5-2 Ma. The regional Late Miocene uplift and denudation in the Mobile Belt is also consistent with that postulated by Crowhurst et al (1996; 1997) for northwest PNG, although they considered the event to have occurred mainly from 8-5 Ma. If so, then the uplift and denudation may have been migrating from east to west as well as to the south into the Fold Belt. These timing relationships place significant constraints on tectonic models for the area, indicating that the major compressional pulse in PNG commenced in the northeast at -10 Ma and migrated to the southwest and west in the latest Miocene to Pliocene. This suggests that the initial arc-continent collision and associated shortening occurred in the Late Miocene around -10-12 Ma. This immediately followed intrusion and cooling of the Akuna Intrusive Complex at -17-14 Ma and the Bismarck Intrusive Complex at -12.5 Ma (Page 1976), indicating a linkage between the end of plutonism and the start of compressional deformation. The timing is consistent with the observation of Hamilton (1994) that in areas of subduction `the common regime in overriding plates is extensional and leading edges are crumpled only in collisions. This suggests that the Middle Miocene magmatism in northern New Guinea occurred during extension above a subducting slab and was terminated by Late Miocene arc collision and resultant compression commencing at -10-12 Ma. In general, these data indicate that the acme of denudation and cooling in the Mobile Belt was in the Late Miocene, with relatively little denudation there since. In contrast, Hill & Gleadow (1989) found that the peak of denudation in basement outcrops in the Fold Belt was in the Pliocene at -4 Ma. This work aimed at evaluating the acid rock drainage (ARD) potential of five samples of a Brazilian gold sulfide mine in a decommissioning process. Three of the most traditional ARD prediction techniques, Standard Acid Base Accounting (Std ABA), Modified Acid Base Accounting (Modified ABA), as static methods, and humidity cells as a kinetic method were tested. Both the Std ABA and the Modified ABA results indicated an acid generation potential for some of the studied samples. In the other cases the results were inconclusive. The five samples were then submitted to humidity cell tests during 27 to 30 weeks. At the end of the period, the leachate pH was stabilised in a range from 3.4 - 4.1 (four samples) to 5 (one sample). The presence of relatively high levels of sulfate and dissolved metals was detected throughout the operation, specifically, Ni and Zn, and less frequently, As. These findings are discussed with the help of the samples mineralogy and Eh-pH diagrams. The results obtained in this investigation indicated potential environmental risks of this mining area. In this particular case, the kinetic tests were shown to be essential to the identification of the samples ARD potential.

Prediction of ground deformation caused by soft ground tunnelling is an important problem facing design engineers. The ground deformations are caused by the closure of the gap formed around the tunnel due to the tunnelling procedure and soil intrusion via the tunnel face into the tunnel. There are three different approaches that are commonly used in practice to estimate the ground deformations due to tunnelling, namely, empirical methods, analytical methods and finite element methods. One of the important issues of tunnelling in urban areas is the assessment of the likely impact on adjacent pile foundations of ground movements arising from tunnel construction. The main objectives of this paper are two-fold: first, to assess the available methods to estimate the tunnelling-induced ground deformations, and second, to examine the effect of such ground deformations on adjacent piles. Analytical solutions to predict the tunnelling-induced ground deformation developed by the authors are used in this study. These estimated ground deformations are imposed on the pile in simplified boundary element analyses to compute pile responses. The influence of various factors such as tunnel geometry, ground loss ratio, pile diameter and ratio of pile length to tunnel depth are examined in this study.

Nearly eighteen months ago Newmont Waihi Operations joined with the local district council and members of the Waihi community in the initiation and running of a community liaison forum.   This forum û the Waihi Community Consultative Committee (WCCC) û was set up with the objective of improving communication, providing a forum for discussion and ultimately working through a range of issues relating to the future of the town and district after the projected closure of Martha Mine in late-2006.   After 18 months of meetings where all represented groups have presented their views, the challenge now is to work together to investigate likely options, seek sources of funding, produce business proposals and plan for the future of Waihi in what we call the Golden Legacy Project.   This paper backgrounds the companyÆs experiences to date, the issues the group has addressed and its proposals for the future. Methods employed to set up an effective community liaison forum are considered, drawing on specific examples from the WCCC. The actions and structures required to ensure effective and ongoing community æbuy inÆ at all levels are also discussed.   This paper develops themes addressed in Taking it to the Streets presented in 2003.

The Olympic Dam mineral discovery by Western Mining Corporation (WMC) in South Australia has been shown to contain one of the world's largest known deposits of copper and uranium; gold and silver are also present. Development of the deposit jointly by WMC and the BP Group is awaiting commitment, with planning based on initial production of gold in 1987 and copper and uranium in 1988.

Spatial modelling has been used to determine potential locations of granite-related nickel skarn mineralisation throughout eastern Australia. It is believed that during granite intrusion, fluid can leach nickel from nearby mafic lithologies and combine with sulfur to form nickel sulfides. Currently exploration for this style of deposit has been limited to the region around the Avebury Deposit in western Tasmania. As the lithologies near Avebury are not unique it is feasible that similar deposits could exist elsewhere in Australia. The weights of evidence spatial data modelling technique was used to evaluate the wealth of geological data available over eastern Australia and included known economic deposits as training data to weight the themes of the model. These weighted themes were combined to create a prospectivity map showing areas favourable for granite-related nickel deposits. Several regions were identified by the model to have good potential to host nickel mineralisation similar to the Avebury deposit. These include areas located throughout New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, the Tasman District of New Zealand and, in particular, the Rockhampton region of eastern Queensland. In mining industries, materials handling costs represent a significant component of the operational cost. A variety of methods have been applied in surface mine equipment selection in order to select the suitable loading system with the lowest loading operation cost. These are queuing theory, bunching theory, linear programming and genetic algorithm. Among them, genetic algorithm is a simple method and applied for preliminary selection of the loading system. In this study, gathering information from anomaly No 2 of Gol-e-Gohar iron mine of Iran, loading system (number and its capacity) has been optimised by genetic algorithm. The study results showed that two shovels 8.25 m3 are required for the removal of 60 million tonnes of overburden. After removal overburden, these two shovels contribute to the extraction of 42 million tonnes of ore with a stripping ratio of 1:1.

Quartzite is a common feedstock used for the production of silicon by reduction at high temperatures in a submerged electric arc furnace. Silica fume, formed as a by-product in this process, contains crystalline silica in the respirable fraction. The crystalline silica in the fume represents entrained quartz derived from unreacted quartzite raw material within the furnace. A knowledge of the fragmentation of quartzite feedstock, in response to thermal disaggregation in the furnace, is important in feedstock selection to help minimise (a) the amount of crystalline silica in fume, critical from an occupational health and safety perspective, and (b) impurity levels necessary to achieve the highest possible purity of product silicon. In this study, a series of quartzites has been assessed in terms of the above requirements and correlations drawn between mineralogical and chemical characteristics. Alkaline solubility correlates with grain-size and level of stored strain in the quartz matrix. Grain-size affects the surface area available for attack while stored strain enhances the chemical reactivity of the strained matrix as well as profoundly influencing the disaggregation and microfracturing characteristics of strained grains and, hence, available surface area for chemical reaction.

Opinions vary widely within the community on what are legitimate environmental social respon- sibilities. The extreme conservationists see the responsibility as the total preservation of the natural environment achieved by opposition to all forms of industrial development that would disturb it. The `growth-at-any-price men' consider it more important to stimulate economic growth, develop new industries, and maximize profit letting the environment take care of itself: within this wide spectrum of concern are the middle-of- the-road men, part of the vast majority, fully aware of the need to compromise to achieve a satisfactory economic growth rate whilst pre- serving to the greatest extent practicable the con- ditions upon which we depend for a balanced self-perpetuating existence. Environmental change is not new. It is the inevitable accompaniment of human activity. Plato wrote in the 5th Century B.C.* of the devastating changes wrought by man and his animals on the ancient world of the Mediter- ranean. PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) operates the Batu Hijau copper and gold mine and process plant on the island of Sumbawa, Nusa Tenggara (Barat)  NTB, Indonesia. The plant consists of a nominal capacity 120 000 t/d conventional semi-autogenous ball milling crushing (SABC) circuit followed by sulfide flotation to produce a bulk copper concentrate for sale. Process control is effected by a plant wide distributed control system that overlays an extensive integrated programable logic controller (PLC) framework. The system is enhanced by a supervisory expert control system.Since plant commissioning in September 1999, over US$4 million has been expended as part of a systematic continuous improvement approach to optimise plant control performance. Works completed to date include: redesign and upgrade of architecture of the control system to ensure long-term system reliability, security and upgradeability and to provide a suitable platform for advanced control; integration of supervisory and advanced control tools, techniques and instrumentation; and implementation of sound network communication and plant data reporting tools. This paper outlines the evolution of process control and associated systems and tools that contribute to successful operation and ongoing performance optimisation at Batu Hijau.

Open stoping dimensions are typically controlled by a number of factors including production drilling capacity, scheduling, fill constraints, orebody dimensions and host wall rock conditions. Frequently host wall rock conditions are the key control on stope dimensions. As a new mine is brought into production, there is a steep geotechnical learning curve for those associated with the development of the mine. Initially, the experience and observations gained at other mines is used to guide the stope design. As experience is gained at the new operation, site specific techniques can be validated for use. This has been the case at BHP Cannington, where a heavy emphasis has been placed on the validation of empirical stope stability techniques for site specific conditions and experience. A range of empirical and numerical techniques can be applied during the design of open stopes. The empirical techniques are an experience based application of known performance levels during the design of open stopes. The numerical modelling and structural tools can be used to compliment the empirical techniques so that an understanding can be gained of the likely stress and structurally controlled failure mechanisms.

The Campamento Au/Ag deposit, discovered by Linear Gold in 2004, is located in Chiapas State, southern Mexico. The deposit is hosted by a sequence of Pleistocene-Pliocene andesitic volcanic rocks that have been intruded by a feldspar-phyric porphyry complex. Measured and indicated resources are 852 000 oz Au and 3.46 million ounces Ag with inferred resources of 374 000 ounces Au and 920 000 oz Ag. Resources were estimated at a 1.0 g/t Au equivalent cut-off. This is an ABSTRACT only. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.

This is a question that will be asked many times and by many individuals during the various evaluation stages of any new project. However, the question itself will often have different connotations to the different groups invariably involved in such an exercise. As examples, consider just three of the several different groups involved in the development of a new mining project - Financiers, Consulting Engineers and the Sponsors of the project (potential borrowers). To the Financiers, a 'bankable project' will be one against which they will be prepared to lend funds (but not necessarily all of the funds requested by the Sponsors). This usually means that in the first instance the technical information presented to the bank has satisfactorily covered all of the requisite areas to the levels of accuracy required. More importantly, the financial evaluation of the projected economic performance of the mine, as a whole, is considered sound and a set of arrangements under which the bank is prepared to advance loan funds have been structured which fully satisfy the bank's credit criteria. To Consulting Engineers preparing a feasibility study (or a part thereof), on behalf of the project Sponsors, the term 'bankable' invariably only refers to the technical completeness and the level of detail contained in the report which they are preparing. Their scope of work will not necessarily have been broad enough to fully satisfy a bank's requirements. It is unusual to see any specific references to overall project viability or profitability in Consulting Engineers' feasibility reports, other than those which are automatically associated with the use of the term 'ore'.
