The resurgence of Silicosis and Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis (CWP) in coalmines has placed the spotlight back on the management of worker exposure to particulate matter across all mining sectors (Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis Select Committee, 2017). There already exists a substantial body of knowledge on particulate matter and its impacts upon human health (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018). The contribution of silica to respiratory disease is well known and there is a growing concern for exposure to diesel particulate matter. However, it is also clear that there are major gaps in our understanding. In part, those gaps relate to the contribution to adverse health effects of mineralogical constituents in the dust (LaBranche et al, 2021a). It is also becoming evident that the size and shape of the particulate matter can affect its potential impact on human health.The University of Queensland has developed a methodology for characterising respirable and inhalable dust samples using scanning electron microscopy. Multiple samples from numerous mining operations have already been analysed using the UQ methodology. The process has been successful in showing the variety of mineralogica lcomponents and particle size distributions presentin various areas of the mines.

This paper is related to the problems of the mathematical modelling of vibrating screening process and to predicting the screening operation results. The authors propose a model of screening based on the interpretation of granular material segregation on a screen surface as an instantaneous process. Results show an agreement with laboratory and pilot plant tests. Derived formulae can be used for screen sizing and screening result estimating.

The Ida Valley in Central Otago is one of series of parallel basins filled with freshwater sediments. The basins are in fact tectonic depressions superimposed on NE trending grabenlike structures which occur in the area and are the result of block faulting possibly initiated in Cretaceous times and concluded in late Tertiary and early Quaternary. In Central Otago this tectonic event affected metamorphosed rocks belonging to the eastern facies of the New Zealand Geosyncline and collectively known as the Haast Schist Group. These rocks constitute the basement and the shoulders of the tectonic depressions. The Ida Valley occupies the depression wedged in between the Raggedy Range to the NW and the North Rough Ridge in the SE. The valley is approximately 38 km long, 3 to 7.5 km wide and is drained by the NE flowing Pool Burn, which meets the SW flowing Ida Burn. The resulting unified stream flows into the Manuherikia river which drains the next door depression to the NW. The present work deals with the Ida Valley basin and more specifically with the geology studied within two Prospecting Licence areas held by Gold Mines of NZ Ltd on the southeastern flank of the valley.

A mineral systems approach was used to interpret precompetitive airborne mineral mapping geoscience data for iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) exploration in the Starra area, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. Selected minerals were chosen to map possible source rocks/fluids as well as intersecting structural/fluid pathways that could have transported mineralising fluids into domains of contrasting rocks/fluids where there was potential for physicochemical gradients to precipitate metals. Ferric and ferrous iron contents and white mica abundance were useful mineral criteria to identify theMount Dore Granite of theWilliams-Naraku Batholith as a potential source of æoxidisedÆ fluids rich in Fe, K and potentially Cu-Au. The Mount Dore Shear Zone (MDSZ) intersects the western margin of this granite with the highest contents and changes in composition of the white mica are peripheral to this contact within the granite. This together, with the fact that the entire N-S length of the MDSZ in the study area (~16 km) is abundant in white mica are evidence of K-rich fluids had preferentially moved along this pathway. To the south, the MDSZ intersects a domain comprising massive ironstone bodies as well as numerous graphitic horizons. This interpreted æreducedÆ domain is well mapped using the æopaqueÆ mineral products, as well as by white mica, which is pervasively developed and extends 2 km either side of the MDSZ fault into the meta-sedimentary sequences. The chemistry of this white mica also changes progressively away from the MDSZ, becoming more Si-rich (longer wavelength) towards the contact with massive ironstone bodies in the west and the graphitic units in the east, both of which represent sites of known Cu-Au mineralisation. Beyond these contact zones of interpreted æoxidised fluidsÆ with reduced rocks/fluids, there is either a rapid change to Si-poor white mica and/or no white mica developed, ie major æchemicalÆ gradient change. These mineral mapping results provide evidence for a direct link between possible source rocks and sites of IOCG metal deposition as well as extending the associated alteration zonation which had previously been mapped/published at the metre-scale to the kilometre-scale. THE following description of the surface plant of the Great Fitzroy Mines is to be understood as having been compiled by a mechanical engineer, who concerns himself more with the various appliances used, their correct construction to enable them to accomplish their prescribed work, and the production and transmission of the power required to operate them, than with the reasons for the physical and chemical processes which those appliances are called upon to assist in carrying out. Hence the metallurgist will not find herein more than the skeleton of the organism, which perhaps he would wish to be clothed with the detailed description of the substances undergoing treatment, in their various combinations, at all stages, and the results attained in separating the valuable constituents from the worthless. So, also, no details will be found of the methods employed by the management for. the purpose of determining by sampling and assaying the nature of the various products obtained.GENERALThe ore being worked at the Great Fitzroy Mine is divided into two classes :-1. Ore that requires concentration before smelting.2. An overview of flotation reagents used in sulfide and non-sulfide separations, from an industrial perspective, is given in this presentation to highlight the current applications knowledge. The historical and theoretical aspects, which are well documented in numerous books and reviews, will only be highlighted, when necessary, to support the theme of this paper, viz critical analysis of reagent research, design, selection and optimisation with an emphasis on relevance to plant needs and practice. The three types of flotation reagents; viz collectors, frothers and modifiers, used currently in the industry are briefly reviewed; pitfalls and gaps, arising from somewhat arbitrary and reductionistic practice in reagent applications, are identified; and the impact of environmental regulations on current and future reagent development is discussed. The importance of frothers and modifiers, which have received less overall attention than collectors, is highlighted. The need for a rational, holistic (or ætotal systemÆ, ætop-downÆ) approach for reagent design, selection and optimisation is discussed with a view to provide remedies for pitfalls and a platform for filling gaps in reagent chemistry and applications, and to develop reagent technology that can deliver robust solutions to plant needs. Portland cement is a finely ground mineral powder obtained by intergrinding a mixture of 95 parts of clinker and five parts of gypsum. It is the generic name for hydraulic cement a man made product which hardens in the presence of water. Today's cement started formally with a patent granted in 1824 to Joseph Aspdin, a Leeds bricklayer. He called his patented cement 'Portland' because it resembled a gray brown stone quarried on the Isle of Portland off the coast of England. The first cement to be made in the southern hemisphere is accredited to Nathaniel Wilson, a pioneer farmer who with his brother John began experimenting in 1874 with the limestone on their property near Warkworth. In 1884 they produced the first Portland Cement to be made in this part of the world.

The perception of the mining industry in the Australian community has changed considerably over the last four decades. This has been partly brought about by changing values and expectations of the Australian community as well as by global factors. The legal environment for the Australian mining industry has undergone significant changes. Among them, the High Court's Mabo decision which confirmed native title rights as part of the common law and environmental legal developments are dealt with particularly. It is suggested that the Australian legal environment is not necessarily the prime cause for Australian mining companies taking their investment off shore. This is a summary on how native title impacts on land tenements and some of the major issues that emerged since the `Mabo decision' and the Native Title Act 1993 are discussed. Environmental legal developments have resulted in liability facing directors and senior management in compliance matters .and in operating mining and other businesses because of changes in community expectations. In the next decade it is suggested there will be many drivers for more changes in the legal environment. Some of these are touched on including the changing roles of the Commonwealth and State Governments, the High Court as -law-makers and the changing relationships with indigenous people in Australia and in overseas countries. The changing legal environment for mining demands a national approach in many areas on the proposition that resource based industries are part of a national industry. The uniform law approach among the States has been taking place but this needs to further. An appropriate task force should be forward to review the entire legal structure and regulations affecting mining on a national rather than a State basis . The mining industry will need to work with expectations of a changing community which have powerful, but sometimes contradictory, interest groups.

Prior to the commencement of mining, the acid rock drainage (ARD) potential of the waste rock to be produced by an open cut mining operation is assessed by a variety of techniques carried out on drill-hole samples. These include, among others, acid base accounting (ABA), net acid generation (NAG) testing, and kinetic testing. Based on the results obtained, a strategy for the identification, separation and selective placement of waste rock having different potentials to form ARD is developed. During the course of mining, the waste rock classification scheme will be re-assessed periodically to confirm that it is appropriate. This re-evaluation may result in a change in classification scheme, and waste rock dump samples may be obtained for ARD assay purposes to confirm the appropriateness of the revised scheme. The paper describes the evolution over time of the scheme used to classify waste rock at a major open pit gold operation in New South Wales, Australia, including the development of a hydrological model. To confirm the appropriateness of the revised scheme, ARD assay testing was carried out on drill-hole samples collected from dumps having different ARD potential designations, including Non-Acid Forming (NAF), Potentially Acid Forming (PAF), and Low Grade Ore stockpiles. The results of the ARD assay testing and water quality monitoring confirmed the appropriateness of the ARD potential designations and the revised classification scheme, which has been adopted.

In Australia, current production of rare earth element (REE) minerals, monazite and xenotime, occurs as by-product from titanium-enriched placers and beach sands. Undeveloped REE resources are associated with carbonatites, alkaline igneous rocks, pegmatites, phosphorites, cemented fluvial sandstones, and uranium mineralisations. The REE are held within a range of minerals including silicates, phosphates, a1uminophosphates, carbonates, and oxides. The development of these REE resources may require new processing and extraction methods. The distribution of REE in the currently mined ore minerals, monazite and bastnaesite, does not match that requested by the market. Exploration for new REE resources should be focused on ores with more marketable REE distributions, particularly with heavy REE, neodymium, samarium, europium and yttrium enrichments. Such ores occur within alkaline igneous rocks, in laterites overlying carbonatites and alkaline igneous rocks, and in placers derived from low-grade regional and contact metamorphic sediments. Lateritic REE deposits may be easily and economically mined by shovel in open pits and are unlikely to require extensive crushing and milling. In addition, lateritic REE clay deposits may be processed by simple hydrometallurgicaltreatment mehtods.

The effects of metal ion addition rates and contact time on the activation of synthetic sphalerite using copper, cadmium and silver ions were determined in order to investigate the exchange characteristics at the mineral surface. The stoichiometry of the adsorption indicated that the activation of sphalerite involved both a simple ion exchange and redox process in which the activating ion and oxygen were reduced, and the mixed-sulphide surface was oxidised to produce elemental sulphur and a metal-deficient sulphide surface. Unactivated sphalerite was shown to be relatively hydrophilic, with recoveries usually less than 20 per cent for a five-minute float. Activated sphalerite could be readily floated without the use of a conventional collector. This inherent flotability of the activated sphalerite had previously been associated with the formation of a metal-deficient sulphide layer; however, this study emphasizses the significance of the surface oxidation processes occurring.

In contrast with mining in areas close to the main centres, mining in remote areas is characterised by comparatively high initial investment and relatively high running cost for the life of the mine. This is because of:the real cost of establishing and running the operation at a location distant from the necessary infrastructure; and the perceived risks priced into their costs by the multitude of suppliers involved in the project. Optimal co-operation between the mine and the supplier in developing the right rela tionship and the correct technical solution permit both cost elements to be reduced. This re duction may well mean the difference between success and failure. This paper examines the possibilities for optimising the contribution of the equipment supplier to the overall success of the process. Issues covered include the necessity to provide more than merely equipment fit for the purpose , but also the need to maximise the benefits of equipment ownership over the life of the mine. A simple method of determining the optimum timing for equipment replacement or rebuilding is proposed . Furthermore the maintenance contract (or performance agreement) is suggested as a means of leveraging the supplierÆs commitment to the mining operation. The specific examples are based on experience with mobile equipment but the methodology has relevance to other equipment and supplies.

Records of ex-solution intergrowths with tetrahedrite as a component are rare. Intergrowths of this nature of tetrahedrite with galena have been described by Guild (1917) and Schneiderhohn (1922), and in Broken Hill ore by Stillwell (1926), but both Schneiderhohn (1922) and Gruner (1929) have commented specifically on the apparent absence of exsolution intergrowths of tetrahedrite and chalcopyrite, despite their frequent association in ores, and their related atomic structures. Schwartz (1942), reviewing the literaturerelating to ex-solution among ore minerals, lists only two instances of such intergrowths, one an occurrence of lamellae of chalcopyrite oriented along the octahedral planes of tentantite (the arsenical isomorph of tetrahedrite), the other of blebs of tetrahedrite in stannite. The only other possible instance of such intergrowths known to the author is the record of "pseudoeutectic" intergrowths of tetrahedrite with chalcopyrite and with bornite in a silver pitchblende ore from the Great Bear Lake district of Canada (Furnival,1939).Some interest attaches, therefore, to the two occurrences described below of tetrahedrite showing ex-solution relationship, in one instance with chalcopyrite, and in the other with bornite.TETRAHEDRITE-CHALCOPYRITEAn intimate intergrowth of tetrahedrite and chalcopy-rite, apparently the product of unmixing of a solid solution of...

As valuable minerals are more disseminated, there is a need for low-grade ores to be finely ground to liberate these valuable minerals. However, this has a negative impact on ultrafine mineral recovery as conventional separations processes such as gravity separation are no longer effective. Instead, fine particles can be recovered by froth flotation. Various novel reagents have been introduced along with development in flotation cell designs such as Jameson cell and column cells to improve performance and recovery of ultrafine valuables. This study, on the other hand, aims to recover the fines using a combination of commercially available reagents to selectively flocculate the valuables, so they are large enough to be recovered via conventional froth flotation cells. This technique if successful can be implemented in many existing industries that continue to use mechanical flotation cells that require particle sizes to be 50–150 μm for effective recovery (Ralston, 1992; Batterham and Moodie, 2005). Selective flocculation is not widely implemented in industries mainly due to the inability to float the aggregates ones they are formed and gangue entrapment within the aggregates which consequently affects the grade of concentrate recovered (Forbes, 2011). The major goal is to aggregate the minerals and float the aggregates unlike the more common industrial technique such as reverse flotation of hematite, where the aggregates itself is not recovered via flotation.

A method that allows data to be mass balanced and screen models to be fitted in a single step is described. The inclusion of several variables to describe the feed data in the fitting procedure allows a mass balance to be conducted at the same time as the fitting of the screen model. Analysis of Groote Eylandt Mining Company screening data has demonstrated that this method is ideally suited to applications where complete stream data are not available. Also, certain random fluctuations in screen model parameters arising from the fitting of consecutive mass balances and screening models are significantly reduced. A cubic spline function with fixed knot positions corresponding to particle sizes and variable (fitted) cumulative percent passing values is used to describe the feed size distribution. When the spline function is interpolated at the experimental feed particle sizes a fitted feed size distribution is obtained. This feed size distribution is then used as input to the screen model calculations from which product size distributions are generated. Since both feed and product size distribution data are used to minimise the residual errors between the observed and fitted stream size distributions, a mass balance is Conducted simultaneously with the screen model parameter fitting.

Different conventional and non-conventional flowsheet configurations were examined for the treatment of a number of refractory lead-zinc and copper-lead-zinc ores containing carbonaceous pyrite, flotable non sulphide gangue and pre-activated zinc. The flowsheet configuration for the processing of complex massive sulphide ores has a remarkable effect on the overall metallurgical results. Conventional sequential flowsheets, with circulation of intermediate products for both lead-zinc and copper-lead-zinc ores, gave poor metallurgical results and often saleable concentrates were difficult to produce. The concept of semi-bulk flotation and double bulk flotation with coarser grinding of the ore, followed by single or double-stage regrinding and sequential flotation was established to be most effective in achieving optimum metallurgical results. This flowsheet design gave superior results as compared to the conventional sequential flowsheet, and resulted in a lower reagent consumption, a significant reduction in the circulation load of intermediate products, and improvement in the rate of flotation of valuable minerals. Thus, optimum flotation conditions were provided for different products within the flowsheet.

Predicting the spatial distribution of rock mass properties in cave mining is a critical challenge. In this study, we introduce a novel machine learning-based model to advance our comprehension of rock behaviour. This model specifically focuses on the spatial distribution of rock mass and mechanical properties, a crucial aspect of our understanding of rock mechanics. Our model is inspired by the recognition that neighbouring information serves as crucial prior knowledge for predicting the spatial distribution of these properties, wherein closer neighbours are likely to exhibit similar characteristics. To effectively capture and model these neighbour relationships, we design a neural network-based model to map the spatial locations within the data set into a new highdimensional space. Within this transformed space, we utilise Euclidean distance to identify N neighbours. Leveraging these neighbours, we introduce a straightforward yet highly effective approach—label propagation—to construct a graph that illustrates neighbour relationships. This graph not only facilitates the prediction of the spatial distribution of rock mass properties but also offers a measure of uncertainty for these predictions. We validate the proposed method using a real rock data set and showcase its efficacy in capturing intricate relationships and distributions within rock properties, enabling precise predictions across diverse spatial scales. Our results underscore the potential of machine learning-based approaches to revolutionise the field of rock mechanics, providing valuable insights applicable to geotechnical engineering, mining, and other sectors where an accurate understanding of rock properties is paramount. This model has direct practical implications, offering a new tool for geotechnical engineers and mining professionals to enhance their understanding and prediction of rock properties, thereby improving safety and efficiency in their operations.

The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed account of the development of the Blasthole Diamond Drilling method of stoping now used at the property of Big Bell Mines Limited, in Western Australia.The ore body is one of the large low grade gold deposits of this State, being a continuous lens 1,850 ft. long and ranging in width from 15 ft. at the ends to 120 ft. at the widest part, the average width being 59 ft. It was first worked in 1913 by a local syndicate, and up to 1924, when operations ceased, 64,448 tons of 3.4 dwt. ore were mined from a shallow open cut. Between 1928 and 1932, 15 deep diamond drill holes were put down to test the ore body at vertical depths ranging from 100 to 700 ft. On the information gained from these drill holes, Premier Gold Mining Co. Ltd. began underground explQration. A level was driven at a depth of 253 ft. and crosscuts put out to the full width of the, orebody at intervals of 100 ft. along the strike, all ore broken being put through a sampling plant. On completion of this sampling,' Big Bell Mines Limited was formed as the operating company, and a plant with a capacity of 1,000 long tons per day was erected and mining and milling operations were commenced in 1937.
